Apparently it makes me a “super villain” and an “evil scientist” to want to use a big big magnet to try to pull the planets in our solar system out of orbit. Personally I think it’s just good old fashioned scientific curiosity but whatever

BIRB BOIS ARE BACK!
Here I am again over a year later with my new art of Despicable Me bird AU (Rise Of Gru in particular, of course). Nefario still looks like a literal cockatiel to me, though I decided to change the species for small Gru, for something that still fits him but is actually smaller than cockatiel in real life. My choice here was the Blue Gray Gnutcatcher. Tiny frowning bird.
And the new brushes! Oh yeah I found absolutely brilliant colored pencil brushes for Procreate and I am having fun with them.

On the kick of relationships I feel were a bit wasted on lack of expansion and fandom media literacy.
Tumblr media
Volgin and Ocelot. While they definitely do not stem from the same problems as Kazuhira and Quiet like I talked about in my other post, I still feel they aren't explained enough, hours of exposition but nothing quite explains why they are the way they are. Part of that leads to their allure as characters, the years of character building we don't hear or see, but their subtle relationship really falls flat on a lot of gamers I've found.
Into them themselves before I get into all the meta stuff.
Volgin doesn't waste time torturing and shocking people who minorly inconvenience him. He kills Granin pretty much just for fun, shocks and sexually tortures EVA, tortures his own men from the simplest lack of respect, and nukes a facility which kills multiple of his countrymen. All of these disturb Ocelot, but he never says much about it until it comes at the pain of Russia itself. (i.e killing Granin who benefits them and Russia in turn, not truly caring about torture when he learns its for a spy, feeling bad ahout killing Russian men even those who go agaisnt the GRU, and the nukes destroying Russian soil and countrymen)
However any time Ocelot calls Volgin out on his sadistic and cruel behaviors, Volgin never says anything truly negative back to Ocelot. For a man who does awful things to everyone else the way he hesitates to hurt Ocelot whether through physical or verbal means was always interesting to me.
Especially this interaction after Granin is killed by Volgin.
Tumblr media
Volgin speaks down on Ocelot, however this isn't done in an insulting way, it's simply the truth in Volgin's eyes. Volgin raised Ocelot since he was 16, Ocelot is still decades younger than him, and is still ranks below.
To Volgin, Ocelot needs to be weeded out himself, of the care he deeply holds for Russia. Volgin undermines Ocelot and how he feels towards the war and cruelty surrounding it, that his feelings have no place within the war and that they're a threat to their organization. While on the surface it refers to how Ocelot is too hot headed and jumps the gun, that he won't be able to focus if he is always judging others. On a deeper level, it read to me as Volgin cares for Ocelot. That the judgement from Ocelot doesn't just break the GRU's unity, it breaks Volgin's unity with Ocelot.
Volgin doesn't want to get rid of Ocelot, that much is evident when in the final boss battle when this is their exchange.
Tumblr media
Ocelot shoots at Volgin, disobeys orders, disrespects his title, etc, etc. Despite this, they have the same back and forth they always do. Volgin simply keeps ordering him until Ocelot just leaves. It comes across as Volgin trusts Ocelot to find the bombs, either that or views him too inferior to do any real damage on his own devices. All and all, Volgin doesn't care about Ocelot's disrespect towards him when if it was anyone else they'd be dead.
Speaking of the boss fight, it really added more to their relationship.
Tumblr media
THIS ESPECIALLY
Volgin comes so close to shocking Ocelot, but he can't, simply just a warning. Then in the next scene, Ocelot looks to Volgin for reassurance on his aid to Snake. This back and forth always ends each word from Ocelot with an obedience to Volgin.
The fact Volgin and Ocelot have whole conversations with each other from body language alone and the way Ocelot himself relies on body language really is such a good detail
Tumblr media
The way they simply talk with one another also always felt like a parent to a child to me. (Maybe a very bad parent but still) In a way, they are a very fucked up found family.
Ocelot kidnapped by The Philosophers as a baby, sent to the GRU to be a spy at 16 and being guided through the rest of his years up until the end of teenage life by Volgin who he knew he'd have to betray at some point. Volgin who was raised by a member of The Philosopher.
While family has never been something they have been expanded on with, I think that speaks more. Neither Ocelot nor Volgin have any semblance with family. They are each other's only sense of that. Through the traitorous attitude of Ocelot and through the hedonist sadism fogging Volgin, they are the only people who get each other but ultimately are not fond of each other in most scenarios. They serve as a twisted parallel of The Boss and Snake to me.
Which sucks even more when The Boss is literally Ocelot's real mom, don't know how to thread that in either, but it's just ughhh literally custody battle between The Boss and Volgin every time they're on screen together with Ocelot
I could talk forever and ever about the analysis between them, but onto the meta. My issues are not within any prejudice or forced characterization like Kaz and Quiet. However, I feel they come from the writers thinking they were not interesting enough. They don't put a lot of their relationship on the surface and by the time players realize their relationship the game is over. MGS is really a game that always deserves a second playthrough to fully grasp its ideas and characters.
Volgin and Ocelot didn't grasp a lot of people because they weren't pushed and pushed like EVA and Snake. They were an afterthought in the game while I think they really could've been given more, considering how much of Volgin affects Ocelot. Ocelot liked torture because of how Volgin raised him, Ocelot has a complicated relationship with Russia partially due to Volgin, and Ocelot's relationships with people are forever shadowed by how Volgin raised him.
I think they really could've been something so interesting, but so much of it was swept under the rug by other relationships and topics within the game. I don't know, tell me what you think this is mostly spit balling about two characters I really like. 🐆

LYRIC SENTENCE STARTERS
all lyrics have been taken from my favorite matt nathanson and noah kahan songs
i am not scared of death, i’ve got dreams again.
it’s just me and the curve of the valley.
a minute from home but i feel so far from it.
it’s all washing over me, i’m angry again.
the car’s in reverse. i’m gripping the wheel.
i’m back between villages and everything’s still.
the things that i lost here, the people i knew. they’ve got me surrounded for a mile or two.
my whole life’s a movie, if movies made you want to jump off a bridge.
i’ve got one who moves me and one who sees through me and all i really want is a kiss.
i was born three thousand miles from where i came alive.
and i left without saying a word to start a new life.
i spent my whole damn life just trying to hide.
you can change every inch of your life, but you’re still just a boy.
i’m mean because i grew up in new england.
i’ve got dreams but i can’t make myself believe them.
i was only kidding when i said i liked a fight.
i was only kind of kidding when i said i liked a fight.
but sometimes you’ve got to start them yourself.
i had a dream you died.
what kind of man misunderstands a woman like you?
i’m the last of the worst pretenders.
i got tired of the frat boys with the brights on.
but it’s all we’ve had for always.
we’ll all be here forever.
we spent july in a berkeley basement.
there was so much i didn’t believe in and then there was you.
no one cares about the stories they’re not in.
we’ll fade out to whispers.
there’s no nostalgia here, it’s just now.
i was a fire that you started.
for once i knew everything that i wanted.
for a minute there, we were perfect.
we made the beautiful people wanna be like us.
some heart’s gotta break to let the light in.
i loved you even before i knew what love was.
everything else felt so unimportant back in your boston bed.
when you think about it i hope you blush just a little bit.
all the best parts still move me.
i could’ve powered the city every time that you kissed me.
we looked good back then.
just between you and me, part of me will always be in love.
we’re better off, no doubt.
what’s it matter now?
if i get too close and i’m not how you hoped, forgive my northern attitude.
i was raised out in the cold.
i was raised on little light.
i don’t miss you. i miss the way you made me feel.
and if i died tomorrow, would you feel me?
and you were only a minute of my time.
even through the pain, i can’t recall your face.
just the ache of knowing everything was gonna change.
got so close to love with you.
i know that the moment i chase is a race i’ve already lost.
it’s long ago.
you were only a break from the fear of being alone.
but i’m sure feeling the ache is better than nothing at all.
i know it gets hard just to breathe sometimes.
it’s the way she walks, the way she talks.
you and my imagination.
there was heaven in your eyes.
everything’s alright when she calls me back.
don’t you hold your head up high.
for bullshit, i do not have time.
and i do not exist to die. but live to die while saving you.
and i don’t get much sleep most nights.
i’m seeing you in every dream.
i was too afraid of living life in your footsteps.
i’m still angry at my parents for what their parents did to them.
but i ignore things and i move sideways.
at the end of the day, i know there are worse ways to stay alive.
i’m terrified that i might never have met me.
if my engine works perfect on empty, i guess i’ll drive.
it’s better to die numb than to feel it all.
and if all my life was wasted, i don’t mind. i’ll watch it go.
you were right.
i’m just a stubborn fool who’s living in the past.
i got a king sized bed and phd and the way it used to be.
the devil is in the details. he and i get on real good.
i’ve got a love that comes in colors.
i had a head full of tangles.
i had my heart full of splinters.
and you came around to save me.
now i drop to hold you.
grew up believing love was a grudge and home was a place you lived with your guard up.
people keep saying memories fade. mine are all drunk and they just keep calling.
the past is a long distance runner and i’m falling further and further behind.
takes me forever and ever to see the good in the people who see the good in me.

Since we're discussing Despicable, I've always had a couple of notes for Despicable Me 3.
First, they shouldn't have done the old long lost twin cliche. That is very hard to make actually work instead of just being shock value. Should have just made him Gru's cousin instead.
Second, DM3 should have been Edith's arc. DM1 had Margo learning to trust Gru and DM2 had Agnes wanting a mother. Edith has always been the troublemaker of the girls, and her wanting to join the villain business would have been perfect for her to explore with Dru, a willing mentor while Gru is trying to stay on the straight path.
The whole long lost twin thing in DM3 is the reason why I don't go back and watch it as much as the other two, it takes up a MAJORITY of the plot to where I kept forgetting that Gru and that 80's villain has beef with one another until he popped up in random scenes.
That and honest to God, Dru's voice was getting ear-aching after listening to it for about 15 minutes that i had to mute or turn down the volume whenever he spoke.
But yeah, poor Edith doesn't have much to do in the films in comparison to her sisters, even though they don't have a lot to do as much anyway. It is a shame since they were the driving force in the first movie to begin with.
She's usually just the tomboy of the trio and seemed like she was interested in becoming a villain type career like her father. Remember that whole time in DM2 where she was wearing that ninja outfit, with nunchucks and a SWORD? and was LOVING the thrill of being in on the action? That never got brought up again like she was going through a "phase".
Sirs, she was at most eight years old. That's not really a phase when she's surrounded by so much cool shit in her house.
That could have played into DM3, where she might have joined someone who was a start out villain and worked with them as an assistant, like how Nefario works for Gru, to where it's revealed they are a major threat. Someone like, idk, the 80s guy? (I don't remember his name and don't feel like looking it up)
Then it would be personal cause what's a better way than to get back at your new sworn enemy by tricking one of his beloved daughters into working for him and possibly turning them against each other?
Or even with Dru filling that role as well. She was shown to be fond of him almost immediately, and he allowed her to play pranks on his butler and stuff. With how giddy he was on having his brother rejoin him, it would be even easier to have Edith join him since it wouldn't take much.
I'd see that for that plot real quick cause you know that man would do ANYTHING for those girls, even after seeing one of them join the villains side for a time after he made an effort to leave it for their sake and a better life.

I sent one of the people writing Kim Dokja poll propaganda a heartfelt ask requesting they change their icon to minion kdj so we could be matchies and they never replied :-(
I think they thought I was trolling maybe but I'm sad because I actually did ask my roommate (ORV fan who I have to see in real life every day) which minion they thought Kim Dokja would be and they agreed with my headcanon (that he would be Stuart (Stuart was the one that gave birth to a minion baby during Minions Rise of Gru)). I thought it would have been really cool to see both of them as minions but I guess it wasn't meant to be

It might seem crazy what I'm 'bout to say, but...
Recently I brought up two thoughts about Despicable Me 4 with a friend of mine over on Discord, specifically about Gru Jr. In fact, I've been thinking about it for a few days now, but it does tie into an idea I've been obsessed with to the point that I wrote a fanfic related to it.
… Namely, that Gru's son will be someone special, and that he probably will be an AVL agent when he grows up. Probably in a hypothetical sequel/spin-off series that I personally like to call "Agent Gru" (creative, I know, but just stick w/ me).
Now I know that the movie hasn't been out yet, and that this post could possibly be rendered moot in the future, but why don't we indulge in some speculation, shall we?
Tumblr media
Thought #1:
Okay, this is more of an observation than anything, but I found it interesting that Gru Jr. has blue eyes and red hair, just like his father and mother respectively. I've done a bit of digging, and I found out that blue eyes + red hair is apparently a very rare combination of eye color + hair color traits. According to this article, about 0.17% of the human population has this combination, making Jr. unique in that regard.
Tumblr media
(I even joked that the powers that be in the Despicable Me/Minions universe saw Gru's family and, after Gru and Lucy did it, really said: "You shall be blessed with a son, and so you shall have children with all of the natural hair colors." Additionally, the powers that be also decided that said son should win the genetics lottery and gave him a rare combination of traits. Which leads me to a question: if red hair is a recessive trait, what part of Gru's side of the family had red hair that led him to be a carrier of that recessive gene? I'm probably just overthinking it, but it's something interesting to think about, y'know?)
Ofc, there's also the possibility that the hair color/eye color might change as he grows up, but I digress.
tl;dr Gru's son is special because of his unique combination of phenotypes.
Which sort of leads into…
Thought #2:
Okay, here's the real meat of my crazy idea/speculation, and it starts with an observation of two characters from DM1 and DM2.
Remember Vector? (DM1)
Tumblr media
Or Antonio? (DM2)
Tumblr media
You notice any similarities between these two?
If not, I'll say it.
Vector is the biological son of Mr. Perkins.
Tumblr media
And Antonio is the biological son of Eduardo Perez aka El Macho.
Tumblr media
And bc Rule of Three seems to be in order, Gru Jr. is the biological son of Gru, thus three supervillains (well, more like two villainous characters and one who turned good anyway) are fathers with biological sons.
But wait! That's not the most interesting observation that I have about them. It's actually…
… Where the sons fall on the morality scale, though it's currently debatable where Jr. will lie. So get this.
Vector is a full-on villain, as he's the main antagonist of DM1
I see Antonio as the "neutral" son, bc he's not exactly villainous like his dad; the worst he does is break Margo's heart in DM2, but otherwise he's kinda a normal kid
Which leads me to this idea: what if Gru Jr. is the "good" son of the trio? Like…
I can't see him becoming a villain like his dad once was (remember that Gru stole things in order to try and impress his neglectful mother!), and seeing how he acts around Lucy and how she seems to handle the kids (she's better than Marlena ofc), I kinda see him as a bit of a momma's boy rather than someone with mommy issues like his dad once did. Overall, he's born into a loving family whose members care for each other very much to where the only realistic reason as to why he would become bad is through a bad outside influence.
At the bare minimum, he'll grow up to be an ordinary guy w/ an ordinary life, but I honestly can't see that bc 1) his family circumstances don't exactly add up to an ordinary life (his parents are AVL agents for one thing) and 2) unless Illumination gets tired of the DM/Minions 'verse, I can't see them settling on an ordinary character as a protagonist. I mean, can you imagine if Jr. was the head of a jelly/jam business just like what Gru was trying to do at the start of DM2?
In other words, I don't really believe he'll be a villain or an ordinary guy. Like, there's little to nothing that could possibly lead him to either of those paths, unless something drastic happens in 4 or in another movie that has him. I think it's more likely he'll be actively on the side of good and be smth like an AVL agent like his parents. Plus, and I know this might be a bit harsh in regards to the girls, but I can (realistically) see him being the next-gen main character of the series. At the same time, though, I do hope that he gets to interact w/ his older sisters in DM4 and beyond (whatever that'll be like); hell, in the fic that I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I imagined him and Edith to be in the AVL, with Edith being like a weapons/gadget specialist like Q from James Bond with an additional enthusiasm for fighting (and I also imply that she might've taught him a few things along the way, such as fighting skills).
Oh, and one last thing: considering that Jr. has a scarf like his protagonist parents (I don't count minor characters w/ scarves like Antonio here), it's likely that he will be a protagonist in DM4 and possibly even future movies after it. (Apparently having one automatically gives you a high chance to be a protag in this 'verse? I joke, but y'know…)
Tumblr media
So… yeah. Sorry for the long post, but I just had to get this off my chest since it's been nagging me for a little while now.

THOUGHTS ON A CHARACTER WE NEVER EVEN SEE
THIS IS VERY VERY VERY LONG. EVA (the real one) is now my OC. click at your own risk
everything that's been cobbled together here is based around the idea that ocelot's black armband is a symbol of mourning for EVA for this to be true, EVA would have to die before the virtuous mission, which took place on the 24th august 1964 so don't get attached to him...
DEFECTION
16-year old ADAM might have been feeling apprehensive about the daunting mission ahead of him. in south america, he spots an elusive creature called an ocelot and is intrigued by it. EVA, older and more experienced with espionage (spies are typically not as young as the exceptional legendary offspring that is ocelot, so presumably EVA is older. idk how much older but definitely an adult) uses this to reassure his young companion about the mission, comparing the behaviour expected of him as an agent to that of a wild ocelot's: stay undercover and blend in with your surroundings; don't trust anyone - you work alone; regardless of the duration of the mission, do not forget your goal - don't let your prey (in this case, the legacy) escape. this works especially well due to ADAM's belief that the rare ocelot sighting was fated (in mgs3 he seemingly believes in fate so to him, this sighting in south america is a sign of sorts. ocelots tend not to approach people but he got to see one? while en route to the most important mission of his life so far?? and it's an animal he can relate to as a spy!? fate!! btw what if the concept of fate, a predetermined course of events, was something imparted and reinforced by the philosophers to reduce the chance of him deviating from the life they have set out for him? not cool!)
it's rare for ocelot to show such a high degree of respect to another person, so EVA must have been important to him. we know nothing about their relationship - only that they were supposedly two NSA agents who defected together in 1960. the armband doesn't necessarily mean that they were friends but it does suggest that ocelot held him in high esteem. we can assume that the path of their defection went like this: US -> south america -> USSR. south america is home to the most noble of creatures: the ocelot. I like to think that this is where the "ocelot" codename was assigned
ADAM and EVA are then welcomed into the KGB. we aren't told how many years ocelot spent in the KGB before joining the GRU but we are told that only he, ADAM, has "infiltrated volgin's ranks." there is no mention of EVA, so presumably he remained in the KGB
IMPORTANT: I think EVA was a philosopher agent. ADAM and EVA's defection was a ruse to locate and retrieve the legacy. if ADAM knew, EVA must've known too. I think he acted in the same capacity as ocelot as an agent with multiple allegiances whose ultimate loyalty rested with the US. as a philosopher agent, he would have access to the same network of spies used by volgin and the boss. EVA, of the KGB, contacts volgin, of the GRU and tells him all about this incredible young KGB soldier who would be a great candidate for spetsnaz (in mgs3 it doesn't seem like volgin knows that ocelot has anything to do with the philosophers, so he's being presented as if he has no connections to them). also he's the son of a legendary war hero. volgin, who would normally not engage with a rival KGB man, listens to his fellow philosopher and then, pleased to have an impressionable young talent on his side, accepts. the KGB encourages this and takes it as a success - but it's an even bigger success for the US philosophers. ocelot is supported by the KGB, who believe he is working undercover on their behalf as a double agent. really, he's a triple agent working undercover for the CIA to find the legacy for the US philosophers. as volgin's protégé, he is one step closer to finding it
THE SORROW AND SOKOLOV
the ADAM and EVA defection happened in september 1960, so ocelot was barely sixteen. let's say he spent around a year and a half being trained by the KGB, then sent off to the GRU at age eighteen
in 1962, the year that ocelot turned eighteen, the boss and the sorrow were pit against each other by the philosophers. they were forced to act or else risk the life of their son. at the time, the sorrow worked in soviet intelligence, just as EVA did. EVA had links to the US philosophers, who had abducted baby ocelot when he was born. the boss, in the US, had no real confirmation that her son was still alive but the sorrow, in russia, could have known that one of the defectors had been sent off to work with the notoriously sadistic colonel volgin. EVA could have been the one to tell him that ADAM was his son. the sorrow knew the threat was credible so let the boss kill him. if the boss and the sorrow failed to act, ocelot would have suffered for it. it could've been that EVA would inform volgin of ocelot's status as a spy, which would guarantee him a slow, painful death (in peace walker it's said he would "suffer" rather than "be killed" but in this context what else would "suffer" mean? losing ocelot would mean the US philosophers would also lose their agent closest to the legacy... maybe it was an empty threat all along)
also in 1962 was the first defection attempt of sokolov. initially working under KGB supervision, he made contact with a CIA mole who relayed his request
KGB? CIA? could it have been EVA? maybe but what's important is that sokolov was brought back to the USSR and placed under increased security at okb-754, the sokolov research facility. EVA is here, at this facility. the US philosophers now have ADAM in the GRU hunting for the legacy and EVA in the KGB monitoring sokolov and his highly classified new weapon (zero says that the CIA only have vague information on the shagohod. there is "a weapon" presumed to be nuclear based on test site activity. if EVA was at okb-754, it could mean either the shagohod is so highly classified that he has no access to any relevant information or he is being selective with the information he passes back to the CIA. he's loyal to the US philosophers, not the CIA)
during the virtuous mission, all of the intel snake receives on sokolov's transferral to the abandoned factory in rassvet comes from the boss. zero says she's using intel channels from the war. a lot of those contacts are likely to be affiliated with the philosophers. there's no way for her to know the location of sokolov without being in contact with someone in the KGB. EVA, a fellow US philosopher agent, is stationed at okb-754 and knows exactly where sokolov has been moved to. ADAM is also in contact with EVA (both of them being stationed in tselinoyarsk makes for easier communication) and turns up at rassvet expecting to meet the boss. if ADAM, EVA, and the boss are all US philosopher agents, then the boss' false defection is an operation they were likely all involved in to some degree
BUT EVA WAS DEAD BEFORE THE VIRTUOUS MISSION!!!!
WHO DID THIS!?!?
it was eva💋🏍️🍜🍣🕶️🐕
it's getting more complicated. hold onto your beret
from now on:
EVA - ADAM's defection partner
eva - the fraudster
I'll try not to use their codenames together too much... not that it makes this any less convoluted B)
A FEMALE SPY!?
eva is an agent with the chinese philosophers. the development of the shagohod is probably on the radar of multiple intelligence organisations. she admits at the end of mgs3 that she was never an NSA or KGB agent, so how does she manage to infiltrate okb-754, a facility heavily guarded by the KGB? it's a black factory, a secret development site that is near impossible to stumble upon. she would need to be directed there by someone with the relevant knowledge. it could be that eva and EVA were working together at some point as philosopher agents
maybe EVA was having trouble with access to high level information concerning the shagohod. he knows that sokolov is estranged from his family and is deeply unhappy. EVA uses the philosopher spy network to request assistance. the russian philosophers would obviously oppose sharing sensitive information with their enemies, so are kept out of the loop. the US philosophers cannot send an agent quickly enough from overseas. the chinese philosophers have both an interest in the shagohod/legacy and geographical convenience. they send charm agent eva to prey on sokolov's loneliness, hoping to extract information on the new weapon to benefit both branches of the philosophers. EVA is presumably american (or at least lived a lot of his life there) and eva is indistinguishable from a native of the US, so she is sent in the hopes that her familiarity to the contact will make her more comfortable to work with
EVA helps eva infiltrate the facility as tatyana. glasses + a meek personality usually indicate a character involved in science/engineering, although kojima has referred to her specifically as "a secretary." this would be a much easier position to secure than something highly specialised
now eva is working at okb-754. she should be trying to get close to sokolov but it's unclear if sokolov actually knew her before operation snake eater. at ponizovje warehouse, when volgin electrocutes her, sokolov is upset. sokolov is a gentle character which might explain his distress... but he also calls her "tanya," a pet name that suggests an intimate relationship (only he and volgin refer to her as "tanya"). at this point, eva has probably told sokolov that she is a covert kgb agent and convinced him to go along with her cover as his mistress
in groznyj grad, sokolov tells snake that tatyana "made her way in here by becoming volgin's lover"
"here" might refer specifically to the colonel class wing, rather than groznyj grad. sokolov and snake also have this exchange:
"Snake: How long has Tatyana been here?
Sokolov: Only a few weeks.
Snake: A few days before the Virtuous Mission, then.
Sokolov: She said that Khrushchev sent her."
how can sokolov say that tatyana has been "here" (groznyj grad) for "a few weeks" when they were captured on the same day (i.e. he would have no idea about her arrival if he has never been at groznyj grad without her)? in this instance, "here" could refer to tselinoyarsk. this could mean that they were acquainted at okb-754, where she posed as a spy sent by Khrushchev
if EVA is involved with security, he can help eva get close to sokolov. her seduction of sokolov fails. no information on the shagohod is recovered. instead of returning with nothing, she is then ordered to charm EVA
when snake asks eva over the radio how she was able to procure western weapons from a vault that "should be under strict surveillance," she tells him: "even if I explained how I did it, you'd never be able to do it yourself."
eva is a charm agent. if she wants to access a restricted area, she will seduce the guard. operation snake eater shows that she had access to KGB equipment - the lipstick gun, the button camera and the transmitter she hid in granin's shoes. being close to EVA would allow her to occasionally bypass security and steal technology developed at the facility
VIRTUOUS MISSION
EVA (KGB) is in regular contact with ADAM (KGB + GRU). ADAM warns EVA of a planned GRU attack on okb-754 on the 24th of august. EVA tells eva, concerned for her safety. she then plans to be captured and taken back with the GRU to groznyj grad, the impregnable fortress. this is her best chance to get in. sokolov has already left the facility, so she lies to the attackers about being his mistress, relying on him to back her up later (not sure when exactly she shared this plan with him but he has to know before the ponizovje warehouse scene). this results in her being allowed to live to be held hostage as a work incentive for sokolov
on the 23rd, the day before the attack (saying this because ocelot is already wearing the black armband on the 24th, hours before the attack), eva opportunistically kills EVA, hoping his death will be pinned on the GRU (if EVA was involved with the boss' false defection/sokolov capture, then maybe ocelot expected communication the day/night before that was never received, so he knew something was wrong - EVA could not have withdrawn from a critical philosopher mission like this). eva is under orders similar to those she's following during operation snake eater: charm, use, then kill. killing EVA is a strategic move to harm the US philosophers by removing an agent and source of intel, putting the chinese philosophers in a better position to retrieve the legacy first
this is all tenuous... but this is the most tenuous: in the helicopter, when tatyana's lipstick gun is discovered, ocelot asks "are you KGB?" directly after this, he turns his back and stares outside with his arms crossed. he could be thinking about his recently dead comrade, who was stationed at the KGB facility in the area they are flying over. he only looks out for a moment before turning back. if EVA and ocelot had a good personal relationship as well as being colleagues, ocelot might have known about EVA working with a female agent from the chinese philosophers - this could be why at the end of mgs3 he knows that she is specifically a chinese agent (as well as equipment and shooting style etc. but I'm trying to construct a theory here)
OPERATION SNAKE EATER
snake's presence in tselinoyarsk is supposed to be detectable, so he is instructed to leave the drone that brought him in, which the boss later blows up. when the guards discover this evidence of a foreign aircraft landing, colonel volgin is alerted immediately. eva has been acting as tatyana for around a week, so is already close to volgin and hears that a foreign agent has entered soviet territory. while he is distracted by the threat of the enemy spy, she can slip away to meet snake. she seems to be able to travel back and forth from groznyj grad fairly quickly on her bike so she would be able to reach rassvet soon after hearing about snake's arrival. assuming EVA was working with ocelot and the boss, he would have known that rassvet - where ocelot expected the boss to be and where he's supposed to meet snake - was a possible rendezvous point. this could explain how eva knew to meet the infiltrator there during operation snake eater despite having no genuine involvement with the mission
snake is expecting to meet ADAM at rassvet but is told via radio that the CIA has been given no physical description and no specific location or time to meet up. when eva turns up, she apologises for being late. since EVA is dead, eva is now operating almost entirely on assumptions. she incorrectly guesses that the meeting had been scheduled for a specific time agreed by both parties. this should have been suspicious to snake. eva also mentions being sent by volgin, despite him having absolutely no involvement in the mission (she says this directly after snake asks about ADAM - eva doesn't know this is ocelot but maybe she knew ADAM was GRU because of EVA?). finally, she doesn't know the answer to "who are the patriots?" snake misses all three clues
EVA IS DEAD
at the end of mgs3, it's implied that eva killed EVA:
"The real ADAM never showed up at the meeting place, saving me the trouble of having to eliminate him."
she must have killed EVA in order to use his codename without causing confusion. the CIA names both ADAM and EVA as KGB agents trained "for exactly this kind of situation." ADAM is expected to make contact with snake but fails. we don't know if EVA was ever going to be assigned to operation snake eater but if he was, he also fails to make contact. neither of the KGB agents are able to reach snake. as far as the CIA is aware, eva is EVA and has successfully made contact with snake
the CIA is unaware that the real EVA has actually been dead for around a week. by the time the KGB was able to officially confirm EVA's death, the davy crockett had been fired, so relations between the USSR and the US were strained. the KGB chooses not to inform the US of EVA's death, even at the beginning of operation snake eater when he is expected to cooperate
ADAM cannot alert the CIA about eva being an imposter because the KGB are deliberately withholding the news of EVA's death. to announce that one of their agents has been assassinated by an unknown assailant would bring the security of the mission into question and put it in jeopardy. ADAM is still available anyway and so the KGB sees no need to inform the CIA of EVA's death as long as the mission can still be carried out. when zero tells snake about his KGB contact, he talks as if only ADAM has been enlisted to help. when eva appears instead, there is no cause for concern, as if it was always a possibility that EVA would be involved. the mission goes ahead with eva. whether or not EVA was supposed to help is unknown but directing snake to only one of two named agents suggests that EVA is unavailable for some reason (dead)
if EVA was alive, both he and ADAM would be able to confirm their lack of contact with snake to their superiors and eva would be identified as an enemy spy. EVA especially should have less trouble reporting this as he doesn't have to communicate with the KGB in secret, unlike ADAM, who has to hide his affiliation from the GRU
after EVA is killed, the KGB is hesitant to send ADAM to meet with snake while the assassin is still active. ADAM is told to postpone meeting up with snake in order to draw the enemy spy out. this might be why ocelot looked so irritated when he turned up the next morning - he had been anxious to meet snake again and taunt him with his very exciting new bullet pendant but was annoyed at having to wait. ocelot instead has to check for outside interference at the rendezvous point and brings his unit for backup, anticipating a hostile third party (ocelot expects to be able to speak with snake privately - if there is no spy, then snake will incapacitate his unit. if there is a spy, his unit will aid in the capture and escort to groznyj grad. it wouldn't take his entire unit to do that but ocelot would order it so he can speak to snake alone. he would probably insist to his unit that he has a personal score to settle and will catch up with them after he has disposed of the filthy american dog)
really, all ocelot has to say is "la li lu le lo" to let snake know that HE is his contact, not eva. he doesn't, probably out of pride, petty rivalry reasons and his runaway emotions but also possibly because he is under orders not to. then, he gets another lecture, run over by a motorcycle and flees. he doesn't get another chance to speak to snake privately again
CONCLUSION (FINALLY!!)
EVA:
agent of the philosophers
strong presence in ocelot's adolescent life; mentor
respected by ocelot
intelligence agent for multiple organisations
involved in the sorrow's death
killed by eva
wouldn't it be so typical of ocelot to form an attachment to someone who guides him but ultimately causes him harm? EVA might have played the role of mentor for ocelot before big boss:
ocelot looks up to EVA, who keeps him trapped under the control of the philosophers and is complicit in organising the death of one of his parents
ocelot looks up to big boss, who kills his remaining parent and who ocelot destroys his entire self for
THE END!! THANK YOU FOR READING!! o7

Devil May Cry: Vergil's Clothes
Warning: self-indulgent headcanons and rambling to follow. Tw for very brief mentions of violence against children (this is Vergil we're talking about here and I don't think he's had a good time).
I'm thinking again about how Vergil is wrapped in so many layers of clothes. Yes Vergil being so gussied up is an aesthetic treat but why is he like this?
On that day, the day of the fire, he was attacked, stabbed to within an inch of his life and turfed out of his home - and his family, or so he thought - wearing a shirt, shorts and boots. Suitable for a life on the run and on the streets it was not. It makes sense that once he was able he would dress in sturdier clothes for travelling, fighting demons and inclement weather alike.
We don't know the details of Vergil's later childhood years but I don't think the DMC universe is so different to ours that we should assume it is different than for real vulnerable street children. (Barring the eternal threat of demons hunting the blood of Sparda - but the parallels between them and real human traffickers and perpetrators of violence - physical, mental or sexual - against children are a whole other matter to consider.)
There was some information saying he was raised in isolation or in hell but I don't think that was confirmed as canon and still lacks any kind of detail. So how did young Vergil survive? Was he taken in? It strikes me that kind of situation may not have lasted long if he was hunted... Did he find sympathisers willing to support him?... Did he steal?... Did the mighty Son of Sparda have to beg for socks and bread? What a treasure trove of humiliating memories for such a proud and haughty man, pre-packaged and ready to be used against him by anyone wishing to cause him pain (looking at you Mundus). Somehow I doubt he immediately learned how to glamour-up a new outfit a la Trish's technique without guidance but it would have been helpful.
When we see Vergil in DMC3 he is dressed for the party: that beautiful, vivid blue battle coat with its gold lining and thorns/vine motif, the snakeskin trousers and belt combo, the boots and of course the infamous ascot scarf...
Tumblr media
However he got them, to me it feels like a statement. "I'm not hiding any more." Chin jutted out, frown between brows, you can see me and I am untouchable. You have shown me no mercy, see how strong and unforgiving I am now. Who is that message for... the demonic legions hunting him or the scared little boy who had to grow up too quickly? Denial (like many behaviours) can be a useful emotional self-defence mechanism until it takes you too far down a dangerous path and reality catches up with you.
... and despite the overt flair and flamboyance if you look past the jewel colours he's pretty well wrapped - especially if you compare his outfit with Dante's. I know I know, in his defence Dante was rudely interrupted by Arkham's invitation and jumped right into action, but even so their clothes mimic their mannerisms. Vergil's? Stoic. Upright. Inviolable. Closed off. Separate. Alone. Lonely?
We know what "clothes" Vergil wears next. Armour: dark, constricting, binding, hopeless. Eventual escape - but not rescue.
So now imagine surviving the unsurvivable only to find yourself crumbling apart from the inside, knowing no matter how many cloaks or rags you wear you can't hide this time when the monster is inside your skin. A time to mourn then, the colours muted, darker, but an attempt to reclaim "oneself" - whatever that looks like after being torn apart. The thorns return and his own colour, but not the sparkling blues that almost glowed in the darkness of Temen Ni Gru. Perhaps a more grown up outfit for a man who didn't really live through all of the years he has been alive but survived them none-the-less. Scars, tattered coat-tails and all.
Tumblr media
V. V, V, V... who didn't initially choose the outfit he wore but seemed to choose to keep wearing it despite spending a month surrounded by abandoned clothes stores or at least homes. Surely he could have pilfered some more sensible or logical devil hunting threads, unless he felt he didn't need to. Metaphorically cloaked by the support of his nightmares, maybe? (Or maybe he felt like your average run-of-the-mill demons wouldn't be as interested in getting their claws into him - and besides, what could they possibly do to him that hadn't been done before?) Dangerous bravado for someone so physically weak, a reminder of whom he came from.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Urizen, containing Vergil's lust for power and propped up by the skills he valued at the time of his Yamato-induced schism - power and strength, physical and demonic. In self preservation and to become stronger he armoured himself with the Qliphoth tendrils and used them to take the blood of human innocents. Take, take, take. Why shouldn't he take when so much has been taken from him? His outermost armour and shield, the faithful friend he carried and was protected by throughout those formative childhood years - Yamato. He eats the Fruit and sheds the armour - why would it be necessary now? Again, he feels untouchable, unbreakable, strong (using his own somewhat limited definition of the term). He loses of course because he is incomplete - V had strength too though it manifested in different ways. The strength to overcome, the strength to do whatever it takes to survive and the strength to ask for help (although perhaps that is debatable, since he acted at times as though he thought he was in control and manipulating those foolish enough to help him).
Even after reforming as Vergil and meeting Dante atop the Qliphoth nothing seems to have changed. Of course we know from Visions of V that a lot has changed. The way Vergil feels is laid bare for us to see and Vergil regains some parts of himself that he lost all of those years ago... not only that day but throughout the following years where his only option was to survive.
Tumblr media
But no open-necked Henley, no forearms on show, still wrapped in those layers. Another armoured vest (sleeveless?) zipped and buttoned to within an inch of his life (and chin - those animations don't exactly make it look comfortable). The other devil hunters in the series seem much happier casually flashing their skin - midriff, cleavage, abs and ass cheeks aplenty - so what makes Vergil any different, other than his antagonist status? (Maybe I'm thinking too deeply and it's purely fan-service.)
So, still looking for protection, still hiding, still afraid of appearing (or being) anything other than untouchable? Still protecting his vulnerable core from anyone or anything that would harm him?
Recovery from trauma is an ongoing process, not something that can be "fixed" within the scope of a game, or a year, or a decade, nor can people be "fixed" to become the same person they once were. But people can grow and become something more and find life worth living again. So maybe one day we'll get to see all three descendants of Sparda with their coats on the ground and hearts on their sleeves, sparring for fun as a family.
Tldr: something something a self-defence mechanism against the entire world something
--------------
If you made it to the bottom of this self-indulgent ramble then kudos to you! So many thoughts, so difficult to articulate and so few words... and there are so many tangents I could go off on but I won't since we somehow made it to a conclusion. Sometimes you've just got to let it out 🎶

DMC Questions Anon here!
"That day, if our positions were switched... Would our fates be different? Would I have your life, and you mine?"
While standing on top of the Qlipoth in DMC 5 Vergil posed a very interesting question that got many people wondering: How would the story of DMC go if Dante and Vergil's positions were switched?
That is what I am asking you now to answer. How does this story go in a world where their positions are switched?
Now this is a question. Thanks dmc-questions-anon!
I have seen a variety of different takes on this concept, and all of them intrigue me. How different each iteration is from each other, and how similar they end up being from the OG twins. However, even if they twins switched positions on that fateful, firey day, the real question is how much would change. My answer?
Not a lot.
Dante would still struggle with isolation issues, only this time, they are so much worse. His demon side awakened to save him on that playground, but instead of accepting it, like Vergil, Dante would be fucking terrified. He'd run, hide, and hate himself even more than the OG Dante. Arkum would drag him to the Temen-ni-gru against his own will, and he would rather fall into Hell and save Vergil from the same fate than to continue to 'be a danger' to the human realm. The tree would never be an issue either, although Dante here would still split himself in two, mainly to be away from his demon half for good, even if it kills him. So the plot of DMC5 turns into Vergil chasing down the feral half of his twin while human-half Dante actively tries to stop him.
Vergil, on the other hand, is much more emotionally stable, though not by much. Vergil, instead of beating himself over the head about his need for power ot never be hurt again, is now beating himself up over his own perceived inability to protect those he loves. Dante was ripped from him for years, and he felt so alone that he willingly fell into Hell so that Vergil didn't. Not to mention Nero, who would be pretty different from OG Nero, with Vergil's presence in his life at least since DMC4 time, being in his life as well. Vergil would feel like he has to kill the feral demon half of Dante to both protect Nero and finally end Dante's suffering. But he does not want to, so he jumps at the chance to recomplete Dante instead of killing him.
So they fight, Dante gets recompleted, but is also pissed because he does not understand why Vergil would want him around. And Vergil has accepted that Dante wants to die, so he feels like he has to end his suffering. And they are both still stupid enough for Nero's brand of airing out issues to be needed.
I suppose my main idea is simply, 'the more things change, the more they stay the same.'

I’ve seen a lot of misinformation spread around with people calling Minions by the wrong name. I think its about time someone from the Minions community speaks up and gives a simple comprehensive guide to minion characters. Contrary to popular belief, it is not always easy to identify every single minions! Some minions share the same appearance, or the same name. For example there are two Jerrys and two Carls! But it is truly unacceptable to misidentify the most recognizable minon characters, as they are unique individuals with interesting personalities!
-------------MINIONS ROLECALL------------------------------------------
THE TRIO
The most important minion characters are the trio of Kevin, Bob, and Stuart! If you cant identify these three you really should check yourself!
Tumblr media
KEVIN
Tumblr media
Kevin is identifiable for his height, tall hair, and leadership! He is one of the most determined and heroic minions. He is arguably the main character of Minions, and he lead the quest to find a new evil master after the minions century-long unemployment (in M1).
BOB
Tumblr media
Bob is identifiable for being tiny and bald, and the sweetest minion of them all! He also has heterochromia. He is a product of the quirky cute craze in the early 2010s, but is honestly written pretty endearingly in recent movies. He had a corruption arc where he became the king of England (in M1). His teddy bear is named Tim, not to be confused with the minion Tim, who I mention later.
STUART
Tumblr media
Stuart is identifiable for having one eye and combed hair.... Oh dear, how do I say this. He is an arrogant.... floozy..... And he frequently shows his minion butt on screen. He also has a bit of an artistic side and can play any type of guitar. Notably, he, along with Dave, are the only two minions to never have been turned into a purple “Evil Minion” (in DM2).
OTHER MAJOR CHARACTERS DAVE
Tumblr media
Dave doesn’t stand out very much visually and personality-wise, he is your standard minion, but he is very iconic! He has two eyes, is an average pill-shape, and has combed hair. Along with Stuart, he was never turned into a purple minion. He is also one of the only minions to never quit their job, along with one of the Jerrys (in DM3). He is also a little bit of a floozy like Stuart.
MEL
Tumblr media
Mel is identifiable for his one eye and friar-type-hair. As the current head of the Minions, he is the one who rallies the minions to speak up with their grievances (in DM3), which inevitably causes them to rebel and temporarily quit their jobs. Despite this, he sees Gru as a father-figure and loves him very much. He is a very complex character and one of my favorite minions.
OTTO
Tumblr media
Otto is EXTREMELY identifiable (if you misidentify him I honestly dont know whats wrong with you). He has a very wide and tall shape, has a tiny sprout of upright hair, and has braces. He also has an extremely-fast-paced speech pattern. Sadly the narrative is rather mean spirited towards him, as all the other minions and Gru are easily annoyed at his presence. Despite being an air-head and making mistakes for the sake of plot, he tries his best to right his wrongs and deserves better!
OTHER NOTABLE CHARACTERS JERRY AND JERRY
Tumblr media
YES they are different characters. YES they both have the same name. It happens in real life too, deal with it. Jerry (left) likes to play golf. Jerry (right) is one of the only minions to not temporarily quit their job, along with Dave. Just wanted to clarify this.
TIM
Tumblr media
Tim looks the same as Kevin, but they are NOT the same character. Tim commonly dresses up as a Father when he goes on undercover missions (he does it in DM1 and DM2.) He is also one of the minions who appears in the iconic credits sequence of DM1, along with Carl and John.
TOM
Tumblr media
For those wondering who the Maid minion is, his name is Tom. Some media accidentally mislabeled him as Phil, but Phil is actually the one who dresses up like an infant and gets inflated (in DM1). DONT BE LIKE THESE FOOLS. DONT CONFUSE THE BABY MINION FOR THE MAID MINION.
Tumblr media
(image of Phil moments before the incident) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are many more minion characters! But these were the ones I felt like are most iconic and important to the plot! Please learn your facts and stop incorrectly identifying minions! Thank you!

A scene from my fanfic I’m writing. hope I’m getting it ‘right’ lol it’s from DM2 Gru and Lucy getting engaged, there’s a whole more that goes on but yeah lol spoiler!!!!! I have no idea what I’m doing, I’m not a writer or anything so it’s not great but yeah… lol 🤷🏻‍♀️……
Margo, Edith and Agnes were helping Gru get ready in their bedroom. The black suit and tie he was wearing fitted him rather well over his teddy bear framed torso. Tonight wasn't just any old night, or even one of Gru and Lucy's many typical dates, it was there 147th date to be exact, there special number, Gru remembered.
'No one really knew why it was there special number, but it just was, maybe one day we will find out'.
"There..now it looks perfect," Margo said finishing up straightening Grus blue bow tie. ''And oh, do you have the ring?'' She asked him beaming.
Though Gru could feel the weight of the box in his right pocket of his suit, he still checked for the thousandth time, it was of course, still there. He was just simply, nervous AF and he's brain was going at one thousands miles a second.
Gru - "Check".
Edith - ''The flowers?''
Gru - "Check, check''.
Agnus - ''The candy?".
Gru - "Check, check, check!".
Gru then picked up the the pink heart shaped box of chocolates from the girls desk he had brought for Lucy, somehow the box felt lighter. He had a peak inside and frowned.
'"Oh I accidentally ate one or two..or maybe it was three or four, five....", Agnes said so innocently now counting her fingers.
"Blurgh, seriously Agnes", Gru said rolling his eyes but smirking to himself and placed them back down on there desk. Luckily, he seen the funny side of it and he couldn't be mad with his sweet little Agnes, especially with her puppy dog eyes. He hoped that Lucy would understand why some of her heart-shaped chocolates were missing as there was nothing he could do about it now. Kids will be kids and all.
Gru glanced at himself in the girls dressing table mirror and took a deep breath, 'this was it big guy, no turning back now'.
This was the night when it would all begin, well hopefully. Gru was going to ask his partner in crime, his girlfriend, the love of his life, the rookie agent herself that is Lucy Wilde, to marry him, at the place they did their very first mission, Paradise Mall. He had something quite 'spectacular' planned aswell. Well, he hoped Lucy would think it was something quite 'spectacular' anyway.
Gru and the girls had been organising this special moment for the past few months now. Ever since the day he told them he thought about marrying Lucy and got there blessings, the girls couldn't wait to get stuck in and come up with all sorts of ideas. They really loved her, she was like a real mum to them and that's all they ever really wanted. A mother figure to complete their family and missing puzzle piece, especially Agnes.
Gru was scared, like really petrified. They had been 'dating' for just over shy of two years now and had passed many milestones in their relationship such as, the first date, insecurity's, intimacy, asking Lucy to be his girlfriend and to move in with him, but nothing came quite as close and committed as this, asking her to be his wife, to spend the rest of there lives together in his 'mad house' as he called it.
'What if she said no. Ugh!'. The thought was nearly unbearable to him right now.
"You guys think I really shud be doin' dis?...what if I make a nut job of myself and she says no?".
"We have been over this so many times Gru, it will all be fine and she will say yes, we just know it". Margo said rolling her eyes but reassuring the middle aged man.
Agnes - " You lover her, you love her, you really, really love her and I want to be a flower girl".
Edith - "Eeeewww gross".
Gru also rolled his eyes at his daughter's wild fantasies, I mean, she still could say 'no'. Why would she want to marry this 'bold', 'ugly' guy with the weird nose, he insecurely thought.
"The suit and tie?, do I look guud or.....too formal?". He turned to the girls but then turned back to the mirror, now straightening up his suit jacket once more as an argument took place in his head over it.
"Yesssss, It will show Lucy that you're really serious about all of this, like we have been over. You look great Dad". Margo persisted.
'Dad', it was always serious when they called him that.
.........................................
"Now gorls, it's time for bed, remember what we said, don't be waiting up for me to geet home and be good for da minions, I will see yu in da morning and tell yu all about it ok..". Gru said to the trio.
Margo, Edith and Agnes climbed into their bomb beds and chatted amongst themselves on what the possible outcome could be for Gru and Lucy tonight. Will she say yes or would she say no. That was the million dollar question on everybody's lips.
He tucked the girls up individually and kissed them all goodnight.
Edith - "Go get her Gru...".
"We'll be here Gru, waiting for you *yawn* - in the morning....". Agnes sleepily said whilst yawning and clutching her fluffy unicorn. Kyle (the dog?) was at the end of her bed rolling his eyes at the whole situation.
Margo was always the last one to be tucked in, so when it came to her turn she instantly threw her arms around her Father and placed a big kiss on his cheek.
"Good luck tonight Gru, we know you can do it...". He always loved the girls affection.
"We love you....Dad", the girls chorused. There was that magical word again, oh how his heart rendered. It must be his lucky night tonight if he got called "Dad", twice already.
"Goodnight my gorls, I love yu..". Gru said picking up the chocolates from there desk and took a few seconds to look on lovingly at his daughters, 'man, he loved them so much'. They had brought so much purpose and worth to his life, he would forever be thankful and he just couldn't imagine his life without them now, they were his.
He then switched out there bedroom light, shut there door behind him and made his way downstairs to let the Minions know the house rules so he could head out.
''Kevin Jerry, time for yu to watch de gorls, they are in bed, yu know de drill...".
"aaalllooommoooo", the two minions replied back to there boss. Atleast Gru knew what it meant, it sounded agreeing anyway….

I like to think the Sparda-worshipping humans of DMC have very different traditions for their equivalent of Christmas, just because their messiah figure is not a working class man who happens to also be god's mortal incarnation (I guess?), but a scary-looking bug-man with a giant sword made of meat.
Christmas is mostly regarded as being about giving to those you love and those less fortunate than yourself, with no inherent expectation of getting anything in return. I suppose you could interpret Sparda's story that way, since he turned on his own kind and gave up his own station and physical power to secure humanity's self-determination. I do think the element of sacrifice would be a pretty prominent distinction, though.
Also, based on the very public nature of the Temen-Ni-Gru and the Qliphoth rising, as well as the existence of the Order Of The Sword, demons are almost definitely widely known to be real in-universe, unlike things from the real-life Christian bible. For humanity, the day that Sparda separated the Human World from the Underworld is sort of like humanity's independence day.
Nico, despite everything implied by the above, is still straight-up Jewish just like in real life, because Judaism is a canon event.

In defense of Despicable Me 3
It has taken me FOREVER to get to this and I can no longer find the ask but! @squidsandthings, to answer your question of what's up with Despicable Me 3, the plain truth of it is that it is simply the pinnacle of film. Most people think it's a classic case of a company wringing every drop of profit they can from a movie that saw commercial success, dragging it out further and further with each sequel until the plot is so attenuated you can barely see it, the concept is so inane you lose brain cells watching it, and the characters are so two-dimensional they are undoubtably relatives of Stanley. But I say it's cinema at its finest. I will try to make this short, but brevity is nigh impossible when extolling the virtues of Despicable Me 3.
To start, Gru is the morally gray anti-hero this generation needs: an ingenius villain with something to prove (he has mommy issues), yet a tender family man at heart. He yearns for his past life, for the thrill of heists and gadgets and gizmos, but recognizes that he now has joys and responsibilities (the gorls) and must struggle to tame his nostalgia.
Dru, Gru's long-lost twin brother with the most luscious blond hair you've ever seen, is the hot to Gru's cold, the high to his low, the piliferously well-endowed to his follically challenged. Dru has all the charisma and charm that Gru lacks, but he is bumbling and incompetent when it comes to heisting. Yet, despite it all, he desperately wants to follow in his (and Gru's) recently deceased father's legacy of villainy, to make him posthumously proud.
The gorls are growing up: Margo receives a proposal from a boy with limp cheese and a pig, Edith remains surly yet reveals her caring nature as she accompanies Agnes to find a unicorn, and Agnes herself remains a paragon of hope and childlike wonder despite learning that unicorns aren't real, choosing to embrace a one-horned goat in what is possibly a biblical allusion to finding the beauty in imperfection. All the while, the gorls are figuring out what a relationship with their step-mom Lucy looks like, and Lucy in turn is learning what it means to be a mother.
The minions, upset with the dangerous labor conditions (Dr. Nefario was accidentally frozen in carbonite) and unfulfilling work (not evil), decide to unionize in a powerful example of proletariat uprising. Unfortunately, they later get imprisoned for stealing pizza after enthralling fictional and real-life audience members alike by performing a spectacular impromptu rendition of the Major-general's Song on a live singing competition. They then stage a jailbreak like the radical prison abolitionists they are and find their way back to continue a life of crime with Dru.
With such a star-studded cast of characters, you'd think there would be no way to steal the spotlight, but the antagonist, Balthazar Bratt, manages to outshine them all. Bratt is nuanced and realistic with a tragic, compelling backstory (teenage acne) who clings to a delusion of fame after his TV show as a child actor was canceled. He is stylish and funky, bringing all the best parts of the '80s back to life with his superior sense of fashion (I mean, who else can pull off spiky purple shoulderpads and not look monstrous?), immense bravery (he sports a spiky, gleaming mullet despite his large bald patch), and multipurpose choice of weaponry (keytar that emits waves of sonic energy strong enough to blow not just your socks, but all of your clothes off to the tune of Van Halen's "Jump").
In all, Despicable Me 3 is undoubtably a cinematic masterpiece through and through.
Also, it's an inside joke with my cousin that I've taken waaaay too far.
