tonight i watched a very informative documentary about the uk's colonial occupation of india and more specifically the siege of cawnpore ...... the entirety of victorian society was in SHOCK when they heard about the natives turning against the british settlers in the most brutal way, not even sparing the women and children from the bloodshed. and i mean queen victoria and her country were positively bereft. gaping at the audacity and crudeness of the massacre of "innocent" settlers in the bibighar at the hands of natives. british public opinion genuinely couldn't believe that indian natives hated the colonists so much. plus, they seemed totally oblivious to their own share of responsibility in the explosion of such abrasive rage. they only blamed the barbaric indian natives for the lost lives, nevermind the ongoing regime of colonial oppression that led to it. sounds familiar? of course the british being the colonizers in this scenario, they promptly got back on their feet and struck back against the native uprising with equal force, violence and even religious humiliation (they forced muslim and hindu rebels to eat the forbidden meats in their respective religions before hanging them, among other means of torture). despite the entity of the rebellion and the huge losses on both sides, the uk still wouldn't yield its colonial imperialist chokehold on india for another century, give or take, but queen victoria, being the merciful head of a colonial empire that she is, let herself be accompanied by indian butlers all her life as a gesture of good will. then she allowed freedom of worship in the colony. what mercy, what generosity. that's the highest form of recognition and concession that the spilled blood of so many brave men and women had been able to pry from the oppressor's plump hands. liberation and decolonization weren't even brought up for debate. one thing that seems clear here, is that the occupying colonial force will never willingly understand that their entitlement to another population's land is entirely delusional, null and void. in fact, they'll kill, maim and torture till the last native has drawn their last breath before they admit that they're just an oppressive invader who's long outstayed their welcome. and if sheer armed retaliation cannot convince them to up and leave, then you can bet your right hand that peaceful protesting and table meetings aren't gonna achieve that either. anyone who says this much just wants the empire to win without a fight from its colonized victims, which seems all too convenient and easy to read for me. no, on the contrary, you'll have your fight. more than you can stomach, in fact. you'll always meet rightful resistance in a land that was never yours and never will be. your peace is bound to be shortlived as it is groundless. and in due time history will turn again, as it always does, and just like all the other reviled colonial powers of the past, we will look at your brief insignificant parenthesis in history with shame and reproach.
