Friday, November 4: Ozzy Osbourne, โZombie Stompโ
R.I.P. Randy Castillo (1950-2002)
Ozzy Osbourne got serious about his craft on No More Tears, aiming to put the antics aside for a minute and focusing on making a professional album that played like a cohesive statement. And with Duane Baron and John Purdell behind the boards, as well as Michael Wagener mixing, even deep cuts like โZombie Stompโ roared with vigor and focus. ย Consistent with the rest of No More Tears, the track homed in on the power and chemistry of Ozzyโs band, with Zakk Wylde churning out one of his last straightforwardly traditional heavy metal riffs and Randy Castillo locking in with him on drums (Bob Daisley was also present as both bassist and lyricist, though he wasnโt credited for either). ย And even though the words were nothing remarkable, especially when compared to the streetwise poetry of the tracks Lemmy Kilmister wordsmithed, the Ozzman sounded engaged and committed, and in fact he would never sound this motivated and passionate as a singer ever again. ย Even with the lengthy and somewhat aimless intro, โZombie Stompโ was a fun charging banger that worked as big-budget early โ90s metal from an icon that hadnโt been taken seriously as a recording artist in several years. ย And if weโre being honest, this wouldโve easily ranked among the best tracks on any subsequent Ozzy record.

I knew this time would come some day, but I was never going to be ready for it. Mick has spent the past 41 years enduring excruciating pain like the badass he is to give us nothing short of his best. His retirement is earned and he deserves to bow out on his own terms. This isn't the first time an original member quit and was replaced. Egos and interpersonal conflicts have gotten the better of our boys in their heyday. But this is not a matter of ego or conflict. The bitter reality of Mick's departure is how supremely final it feels. Unless he continues to record with the band (if they ever decide to record again), I don't see Mick performing with Mรถtley ever again. Mick was in many ways, the glue that held Mรถtley together. His departure is more than understandable, but it still hurts.
That being said, I think there is still enough to look forward to. John 5 has some big shoes to fill, but he's an amazing and innovative guitar player in his own right and seems to gel with the rest of the guys. While Mรถtley Crรผe will always be the original four for many, I've ways appreciated what replacement members have brought to the table. John Corabi is not Vince but he managed to bring grit and soul to the band's sound. Randy Castillo and Samantha Maloney weren't Tommy, but both were badass drummers in their own right. John 5 can never replace Mick, but I look forward to seeing what he has to offer.
Mick is a unique gem of a musician who can never be replaced. His departure is a bittersweet moment in Crรผe history.
