Hua Cheng is not the reward for Xie Lian's suffering. Hua Cheng suffered because Xie Lian suffered after all. Xie Lian was just lucky that someone....loved him that much.
There is no grand amazing world altering moral lesson at the end of TGCF, though some may say staying on the path of good and righteousness no matter what evil comes your way. However, in truth, Xie Lian stayed good because he couldn't bear to be evil. Hurting people has only ever hurt him. The way he so deeply regrets what he did in the past, it shames him because seeing his enemies suffer would have never brought him satisfaction. The same way Bai Wuxiang had to keep finding new enemies to fight because revenge doesn't make the pain go away and won't bring back what was lost. It's not a revelation that revenge is bad or a waste of time, but that it won't change how broken you are inside.
Xie Lian stayed true to himself but the reason he's so happy at the end of TGCF is not because of that. Hua Cheng would love him no matter what he did after all, and Hua Cheng knew Xie Lian so well, right down to the worst he was capable of, he knew Xie Lian would never hurt people, but it ended up boiling down to Hua Cheng choosing Xie Lian over and over again. Through the pain and suffering and sorrow. After everything, Xie Lian was just lucky.
It's painful, knowing that that's exactly how life works. Xie Lian was lucky that there was someone willing to fight for him and by his side for 800 years. Xie Lian was loved and adored the way everyone deserves to be loved and adored. A home was created for him and his pain did not feel meaningless at the end.
But what about Qi Rong? The neglected child who didn't get his happily ever after, except in headcanons? He didn't ask to have bad adults that never corrected him. He didn't ask to.crave attention so much that he'd rather be tortured than ignored.
What about He Xuan who lost everything for something that was never his fault? Getting revenge didn't get that back, it just made him lose more. Where is the home and happiness that He Xuan deserves once and for all?
What about Bai Wuxiang..... The version of Xie Lian that never got a Hua Cheng. That just kept suffering till he went mad.
What about Shi Qingxuan who had luck for majority of his life but will now live and die in insignificance, once again through no fault of his own. Or is he at fault for never asking his brother how he took care of the problem?
What about Ling Wen who loved and killed but never stopped loving. Who went to great lengths to revive her lover just to lose it all. What about Ling Wen who achieved so much but has lost one of her best friends and won't get the one she loves?
Unlucky. That's just it. Things didn't work out for them.
In the grand scheme of things, whether you're evil or good, sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. Not all bad guys 'reap the consequences of their actions'. Not all good guys get a happy ending. Xie Lian was lucky, and I'm so happy for him. But every time I remember the others....it brings me to tears.

Heaven Official Blessing Thoughts
To avoid shouting into my friends' faces about this series, I'll shout some things here. Be warned, spoilers (sort of).
HuaLian is a god tier ship.
Why? Easy. Because it's another take on the fan ascending trope, which is hard to do well. It's a ship that at first, XL is a literal God who has asked a small hopeless and luckless child to live from him. Talk about an imbalance, right?
Well, sometimes those worshipful and obsessive relationships end in tragedy and darkness. But here, while Hua Cheng's obsessive worship never disappears, it becomes something that is consented to. Xie Lian knows of this, and he leans into it.
Add to that, Hua Cheng spent 800+ years growing himself to become someone worthy of protecting Xie Lian. He became matched in power and cleverness to the one who he devoted himself to.
When they finally reunite, Hua Cheng is Xie Lian's equal. Not just in terms of martial prowess either, but in terms of banter and intelligence and power. Hua Cheng might not have been working so hard to guarantee that he was a worthy partner to Xie Lian, but he sure became one.
Fate ordained that their paths would cross and they would be bound to each other by the red string of fate, but it was ultimately their choice too. Hua Cheng chose Xie Lian when he was still a fledgling god, and his choice never wavered. Xie Lian too chose Hua Cheng, over and over again. There is no doubt that although Hua Cheng would continue to protect Xie Lian, he never would force Xie Lian to be with him.
People say that these two invented love, but I think the thing that made this work so beautifully well is not the destined love, but instead the chosen love.
BeefLeaf is what ships are made of
MXTX does a really good job wading into moral ambiguity. The demon kings are good as much as bad, and the gods are as bad as they are good.
So when Shi Qingxuan finds out that his brother stole someone else's fate to make him a god, and that person lost so much because of it, we're faced with asking what the price of revenge is.
We also find out that Shi Qingxuan does not bear a grudge for what He Xuan does to his brother, and that he does not change who he is when he's stripped of godhood and becomes a beggar. He is still cheerful and gregarious, still makes friends easily.
A ray of sunshine who forgives the vengeance-driven (ghost) king of gloom? And once He Xuan has gotten his revenge, instead of fading away, he's still there fixing the windmaster fan? Delicious. Delectable. Scrumptious.
We also learn that most of the gods had abandoned Shi Qingxuan nearly the moment everything fell apart, even with how generous and gregarious he always was. Xie Lian is one of the only people who remains his friend.
He Xuan, even against his will, also can't help but remain friends with the former Windmaster.
It's not canon at all, but my BeefLeaf loving brain says He Xuan stays and takes care of Shi Qingxuan until Shi Qingxuan ascends again. And even though it's clear that they're married, He Xuan still denies it.
Banyue and Pei Xiu
Ghost/God pairings are just too good. We know what Jun Wu was going for in setting up Xie Lian to take the fall for Pei Xiu's banishment, but it's also clear to me that instead of making an enemy, Xie Lian's defense and protection of Banyue (and likely jogging Pei Xiu's memory of General Hua) earned Xie Lian another dedicated ally.
I don't think Pei Xiu ever told Banyue that he was in love with her. And honestly, a 200 year banishment into the mortal realm meant 200 years away from Heavenly duties so he could be with his beloved ghost girl.
Another not-canon, but I like to imagine Banyue decides to restore her land and the oasis, and goes the route of the kiln to do so, becoming the third kickass supreme in love with a god.
Ling Wen deserves a vacation
Yes yes, the grandmaster scholar bends the way the wind blows, but can we really blame her? Poor woman has not gotten a break in centuries because she is so damn good at her job that people mistake her for a man and Heaven falls to shambles when she's gone for less than a week.
She is a queen amongst gods, and even as she will stab you in the back if she has to choose between you and her survival? Well... maybe if you gave her a vacation and some rest here and there she wouldn't have to plot your demise, okay?
Xie Lian seems to be one of the only people who comments on this and actually insists she take a vacation, and Hua Cheng is basically the worst person in the universe to make an enemy of, so perhaps Ling Wen will determine that loyalty to Xie Lian is the best way to go, and even finds that she doesn't hate that fact.
What can I say, I am a Ling Wen stan.

i think we've witnessed the start of mxtx's villain arc
if you start reading from SVSS all the way to TGCF in your quest to finish all of mxtx's books, it really goes from "speed run a relationship haha" to "speed? NAH a relationship".
(we love it regardless)

I touched on this a bit on my Paper Flowers fic but --
What gets me about the height difference between Hua Cheng and Xie Lian is that, for most of Hua Cheng's life he was shorter than Xie Lian, and he must have thought of Xie Lian as this larger than life figure in his head. Much like how you look up to your idols and all that.
So to go to his true height and realize he's like a full head taller must've been so surreal for him. To realize that Xie Lian was relatively short compared to a lot of gods, as opposed to that 'larger than life' figure in his head. It must've been such a weird experience for Hua Cheng to have to look down to talk to him, or to bend down to hug him and kiss him.
And it must've been so painful to realize that that small body protected him when he was young, and suffered so much in front of him.

Through the entirety of the novel we see how Xie Lian self deprecates and brushes off his own needs and all of that.
We see the backstory and everything for his first two ascensions.
What really gets me though is how pointed it all becomes, how blatant the deepness of his eight centuries of wounds go during the half a page in the 7seas translation of volume 7, in the heavenly capital when we see Xie Lian on the brink doubting everything about who he as a person is because he can see the potential in the accusation that he himself could be Bai Wuxiang.
Like my poor boy.
And the way that Jun Wu likely would have been able to pin *everything* on Xie Lian in that moment with Xie Lian accepting it fully if not for 1. Hongjing, obviously, exposing Jun Wu's true face, but 2 and more pertinent to what I'm attempting to talk about, Hua Cheng in four simple sentences dispelling all of Xie Lian's self-doubt about who he is.
Like damn.
So much hinged on that one moment, and it could have gone so very, very differently.

One of the most relieving things about TGCF for me was finding out that "no" does in fact exist in Hua Cheng's dictionary, even with Xie Lian.
There are times when they would have full blown struggles, nothing too serious where they hit each other, but there will be clear disagreements and Hua Cheng will stand his ground on his belief even if it opposes what Xie Lian believes. These are usually for moments when Xie Lian is choosing self harm and Hua Cheng will Never be down with that. I just feel relieved that at least Hua Cheng CAN in fact say no to Xie Lian so if he ever felt uncomfortable about something he would say something about it.
However, after these small struggles Hua Cheng does get very upset, like really really upset and he'll get so quiet. Xie Lian, who is already over the argument (he spent an important part of his life growing up around Feng Xin and Mu Qing, of course he believes it's normal for people who love each other to fight and make up in the same second XD) gets concerned that Hua Cheng is so silent and then they talk about it. ^_^ Xie Lian asks him what's wrong, Xie Lian explains that he's not upset, they talk through their disagreement. Conversation usually ends with them understanding each other and feeling at peace again to resume what they were doing without the fight ever being brought up again. It is so healthy and so sweet, I love them. ♡ They are supportive of each other in this adorable messy way.

Thinking about An Le again and all the potential everything with him...
Lang Qianqiu's best friend who befriended him specifically as part of a rebellion plot
Mentored by Qi Rong, and was probably pretty close to him (QR seems to have been around since before XL became LQQ's mentor so it sounds like QR practically raised him since he was a kid)
HIS DEATH WAS ACTUALLY REALLY BRUTAL (deserved but yikes!)
Still really want to know what his dynamic with QR was like. Did QR feel anything about his death...
Was he seen as a champion of the Xianle people? We know how pure and heroic LQQ is, so I feel like An Le would have had to outwardly be like that too for them to be close friends
Was LQQ there for his death or did he learn of it later... (probably the latter because he had no idea An Le hated him and I doubt that's something An Le would conceal on his death bed. He's dying, may as well stick the knife into his bestie as deep as it will go!)
Anyway it is just thinking about An Le hours and I really hope the donghua expands on him a little the way it did for Pei Xiu & Banyue's backstory before

The fact that Neuvillette's JP VA Kamiya Hiroshi also voices Levi from AOT who lost Erwin (also has the same JP VA Ono Daisuke as Wriothesley) while Neuvillette will outlive Wriothesley :(( Seems like Kamiya's characters can't catch a break
BUT Kamiya did voice Xie Lian from TGCF, so imma cope with the Wriolette angst by imagining many, many years after the current Genshin story, Wriothesley became an immortal being who can transform into a real Cerberus after he died and he met Neuvillette again, just like how Hong Hong-er became the Ghost King after dying, that's my delulu for now *sobs*

I read tgcf after Corona times, like somewhere in the end of 2021. And eventhough I don't usually pray, I had this silly thought that I would prayed to Xie Lian if the pandemic occurs again. Then I realized, Oh he's like the God of misfortune, in a way. And the last time he handled a pandemic, it turned out not-so-good. (Somewhat poilers to the ending I suppose) So like, the ending of the novel (or was it the extra chapters? I don't remember) says how people worship Xie Lian along with the Hua Cheng, so that the God's misfortune get canceled out or over ruled by the Ghost Kings immense luck. So then I was like, if things did go south, why not pray for Hua Cheng to fix things? But then I realized that the only thing Hua Cheng cares for is his gege, and if Xie Lian does mess up, he might only step in if Xie Lian asked or just change things in a way so that Xie Lian could handle it no matter what. What I mean is, in the end it's all upto Xie Lian, rotten luck or not. So I came to the conclusion that no, I won't pray to anybody, cuz the pandemic did come to an end. No need to be too greedy
