Something tickles between your legs. Your top half is still in the sprawl of unconsciousness, sheets clutched to you, but your bottom half is exposed, your legs held apart. Whatever is doing so is furnace-warm where your legs touch it.
The tickle that woke you clarifies into more specific sensation- something is lapping at your sex, soft and hot and wet. It sends tendrils of pleasure racing outwards, infusing the far reaches of your body. Sleep still fogs the boundaries of your thoughts; it’s a seemingly endless stretch of a moment before the pleasure you noted from a distance fully registers, but when it does-
A gasp rips from your lungs, and all your muscles contract inward, toward where all that pleasure is gathered like a pool of oil, just waiting for a spark to ignite.
You come with a choked moan, sleep-clumsy body convulsing, heat coursing through your veins and hurtling you from sleepy to a very different state of bewilderment. Beside you, Javier bolts upright so fast you flinch even in the throes of it. The sheets twist around his bare waist. His hair sticks up on one side of his head, and his eyes are cloudy but wide, watching in shock as you both wake up to your climax.
As the bliss tapers off, you squirm away from your other partner’s mouth. “J-jack?” You sputter and pant. “What are you doing?”
Undeterred, Jack inches after you, his mustache bristling wetly against your inner thighs. “Well, I woulda thought that was obvious, darlin’. I’m wakin’ up my lazy, good-for-nothin' spouses.”
The clock on the wall ticks in alarm; it indicates the time is barely nine a.m. Javi, who never does well before his morning coffee, stares at Jack with an indent of disbelief between his brows. Your only response is to huff incredulously at the ceiling, your heart still pounding.
Jack's laugh is far too pleased with itself for the early hour. “I gotta say honey, I’m seriously considering making the sound of you comin’ my new alarm.”
Javi has finally gotten his brain online, it seems. He scoffs. “And how would you deal with the hard-on you’d get first thing every morning if you did that?”
His voice is deliciously low and gravely when he first wakes. Javi shifts to a more comfortable position, leaning over to check on you. His concerned face appears in your line of sight, one hand stroking your cheek. He raises his eyebrows in silent question.
Jack chuckles, the sound throaty and dark with delight. “Why don’t you tell me, big boy? Got any ideas for yours?” His hand snakes over the bedspread, landing on Javi's knee. Falling short of its goal- the erection bobbing against Javi's belly, flushed and very thoroughly woken by the morning's start.
Jack’s tongue teases your clit again, and you moan quietly, reaching out. Javier meets Jack’s eyes from where they glint between your legs, and then looks at your hand squeezing his arm.
“Javi,” you plea.
He smirks slightly. “I think they do.”
Scooting free of the blankets, Javi leans forward. He twines in his fingers in Jack’s hair and pulls him upright, kissing your slick from his mouth. Jack rises willingly, eagerly. It’s a mesmerizing sight- the shine of moisture transferring from Jack’s mustache to Javi’s, the glimpse of their tongues sliding in a kiss that’s just as much affection as it is challenge.
The next thing you know Jack is reeling backward, spluttering indignantly, as Javi clambers into his place. He settles between your legs, stretching his leanly muscled body atop yours for a sweeter, more gradual good morning than Jack’s. You relish the taste of all three of you in his kiss, humming in satisfaction. With a tilt of your hips, Javi’s cock nestles amongst your folds, gliding easily in the slippery mess Jack made of you.
Javi groans at the feeling. “Is this what you want, baby? Jack’s mouth didn’t wake you up all the way? Need me to finish the job?”
“Shut up and fuck me,” you manage to say, laughing.
Javi grins then, a crooked, breathtaking thing beneath his warm brown eyes and tangled bedhead.
When he presses into you, you both sigh.
Jack’s protests have gone silent. He remains kneeling at the foot of the bed, transfixed by the sight of your glistening cunt stretched around Javi's cock.
“Jack? W-what are you doing?” Your words stutter as Javi begins moving, heedless of you attempting to peer around his wide shoulders.
Jack’s gaze travels all the way up and then back down your joined bodies. He’s not smiling any more; a flush has appeared high on his cheeks. Very distinctly, you hear the sound of a zipper going down. Only one of Jack’s hands grips the bed.
“Nothin’, darlin’. Just enjoyin’ the view.”

The shelter from the rain
Find my series masterlist
Here we are, second to last chapter of this story. I hope you enjoy!
Warnings: Swearing, allusions to violence, allusions to threats, Eggsy being the cutest menace.
Word count: 2.7k
Tumblr media
You were alone when you heard the car. You’d kept your promise to Jack and were still at the ranch, but he’d checked, double checked, and triple checked that he had no appointments booked for the next week. Nobody should be coming to the ranch.
So why did you hear a car coming down the drive?
Heart suddenly pounding, you grabbed your cell phone, just in case. A quick peek out the window showed a truck rolling to a stop near your car, and two men got out. One was blonde and lean, hair pulled back into a neat ponytail. The other was dark-haired, scowling, and broader.
A call of your name had you jerking back away from the window, but there was no repercussion. Just silence for a full minute. Then another call of your name.
“What do you want?” you yelled back, edging over closer to the door to peer out the peek hole.
“A mutual friend sent us,” the blonde one called back. “Said you’d remember him from the coat he wore to the diner, and told us to ask if the banana cream pie was good.”
It took you a moment and then your shoulders fell. Okay. Your… accomplice? Ally? Whatever he was. You opened the door, still eyeing the two warily.
The blonde one smiled at you, aiming for disarming and falling a little short. “I have a letter from him.”
“Stay put.” You stepped out of the house, glancing around. Champ was nearby, slowly edging closer, surprisingly quiet for a dragon of his size. That gave you the courage to walk up to the two, where the blonde was holding out the letter. You took it and then backed away, towards Champ. Just in case.
And then you opened the letter, trying to hold it so you could read and keep part of your attention on the two men at the same time.
I’m sure seeing these two will be a surprise to you, but I ask that you allow them to stay. They’re both ex-military and I regularly retain their services to guard more precious shipments. Allow them to stay and guard you until your beau’s work is done. Just in case.
Those last three words haunted you and you swallowed hard before you folded the note again.
“I see,” you murmured, more to yourself than them. “Uh. What do you need?”
The blonde one relaxed a little. “Not much,” he assured you. “Tovar and I are equipped.”
“Right.” You shrugged. “I’ll be out here for a bit if you need anything.”
The two looked at each other, having an entire conversation between facial expressions and little hand movements, before the blonde one nodded. “I’ll come with you. Best to be careful.”
You thought about arguing, because you were going to be with the dragons. What could possibly happen to you there?
And then you remembered that Poppy had the resources to kidnap a fully grown Royal, and gave up. “Sure, okay. What should I call you?”
The blonde’s lips twitched as he stepped forward, falling into step next to you as you walked towards the big pen. “I’m William. We’ll keep out of your way, ma’am. We’re just here on guard duty.”
“So I read.” You grimaced a little. “Nothing personal, but I’m not thrilled with this.”
“I can imagine. You had no idea we were coming.” He slanted a sort of sympathetic look at you. “Our employer likes his little games.”
“Yeah, well.” You sighed, long and slow, reaching up to pat Champ’s nose. “I don’t.”
William nodded once but otherwise left you to your own devices. Which was actually much appreciated. You didn’t need someone hovering over you until Jack got home.
It did not escape your notice that Tequila idly ambled around to keep an eye on the two guards. (Which did surprise you - you didn’t know Tequila had it in him.)
The two switched off who watched you during the day, but one of them was always around.
And, before dinner, you gave in and decided to be more hospitable.
"Any food allergies? Or anything you won't eat?" You aimed the question at Tovar, since he was nearby.
"No." The word was grunted but that worked.
"What about William?"
This time Tovar just shook his head, watching you curiously.
So you grabbed the ingredients you wanted and set to work cooking. It didn't take long for the kitchen to smell delicious.
"Dinner will be ready in five minutes," you told Tovar. "If you want to tell William."
"You're feeding us?" Tovar looked surprised, though he still sounded grumpy.
"Yeah, might as well. You're here now, and I'm not going to let you go hungry. Nobody delivers out here, either." You shrugged. It made sense to you.
Tovar grunted again but left, the front door smacking open as he yelled something in what sounded like Spanish.
Jack better finish up and get back quickly.
Dinner was a little awkward, but the amount that both men ate was quite gratifying.
And then you had some time to kill before bed. So you went back outside to do one final round before bed.
Eggsy barreled into you, chittering and sniffing you all over. Warm breaths puffed against your face as he chirped, an inquisitive baby noise that he was almost too big to make.
“I’m fine,” you assured him, scratching his eye ridges. “We’re fine here. No big deal.”
Eggsy grumbled (you swore he learned that from Champ) but settled a bit, his scales smoothing out and his wings tucking more firmly against his sides. He did still peer over your shoulder and hiss a little.
“Hey! Behave.” You snapped your fingers in front of his face in reprimand. “I told you they’re fine.”
Eggsy managed to look quite mulish but relented, sulking along next to you as you did your final round.
The property was dark, as always at night, with only the porch lights from the house and the barn lights providing illumination. Champ had settled down much closer to the house for the night, and Ginger was still stalking the perimeter of the big yard, clearly agitated at the two newcomers while Jack wasn’t around. Tequila had flopped down behind their car, which made you snort. Nobody was using that car until he deigned to move.
The rest of the property was quiet and dark, and you headed inside after tucking in Eggsy under Champ’s wing. They both somehow managed to look like they were only humoring you.
And then you made your way back inside, left with nothing much else to do.
“Feel free to use the TV,” you offered to the two. “Wake me if you need anything.”
William nodded with a smile. “Good night,” he murmured, settling in one chair. Tovar was already in the other, a bigass hunting knife in hand that he was inspecting closely.
You locked the bedroom door. Just in case.
Somehow, you had a very hard time getting to sleep, your dreams troubled and interrupted.
The next day was quiet. You’d gotten one single message from Jack overnight, a quick update that they’d arrived and he’d be out of communication until this was done.
Leaving you with nothing but time.
Deciding the best route was to feed your guard-visitors, you made a big breakfast. Somehow, William snuck over to do the dishes while you were distracted.
“It’s only fair,” was his only reasoning. “Since you cooked for us.”
You gave up on arguing with them very quickly.
Tovar accompanied you outside, keeping a respectful distance while you greeted the dragons and pulled a chunk of beef out of the big freezer for Eggsy. The rest of the dragons were fine for a few more days.
And then… You stood in the yard, hands on your hips, aimless and frustrated. You weren’t used to being here alone, you weren’t used to being without direction, and you weren’t used to the pervasive low-level anxiety plaguing you.
Tovar stepped up next to you, silent for several moments as he took in the view. “Has the fence been inspected recently?” he asked, low and gruff.
“What?” The question caught you off-guard, and you blinked at him dumbly for a moment while the words actually percolated. “Uh. No. No, I don’t think so, Jack usually does it.”
Tovar grunted. “Let’s go.”
You stared blankly at him, but he didn’t wait for you. He strode off towards the nearest section of fence, leaving you to scramble after him.
The two of you walked the entire perimeter of the fence. Then he insisted on inspecting the barn, inside and out.
It was about the time he suggested you organize the big freezer that you realized he was distracting you. And maybe you should have been insulted, but… Honestly, you needed it. It was too easy to get lost in your own head, with everything going on.
So you let yourself be distracted all day. Between the two men, they came up with chores and activities for you to do all day, always with at least one of them by your side.
You appreciated it more than you could say. But instead of trying, you poured that feeling into cooking dinner.
Dinner was once again devoured with a fervour that told you that maybe they got the message. This time, Tovar was the one that did the dishes while William distracted you.
“I’m out to do last rounds,” you told the two, standing and rolling your shoulders.
“I’ll come with.” William stood and followed you outside. He was quiet as the two of you did one last check, Eggsy bouncing along next to you happily. “How’d you get a little one, anyway?” The question was without judgment, and William showed only curiosity.
“Long story short? I found him under a rose bush.” You huffed out a laugh, thinking back all that way to when you’d found the baby dragon. “He was injured, so I brought him here.”
“And never left.” William smiled, just a little.
“Something like that.” You shrugged. “Things worked out.”
Ginger hissed at William as she slunk past, making her way over to Tequila. The big boy was once again laying in the middle of the drive behind the cars.
“They don’t like us much, do they?”
“Don’t take it personally.” You shrugged, your steps turning towards Champ. “You’re here and Jack’s not. They’re just being cautious.”
William stayed back as you tucked Eggsy under Champ’s wing, giving them both good night scritches. And if you stayed in front of Champ for a few extra moments, breathing deeply through the ache in your chest, well… William didn’t say a word.
And then you were once again adrift, feet unwavering in your walk back to the house, though your mind was miles away.
You and Jack still needed to have that talk, after all.
“Want to see something fun?”
You blinked, jolted out of your thoughts, and looked back at William. “What did you have in mind?”
“Watch.” William stepped past you with a wink, opening the door and ushering you inside. After making sure the door was locked, he turned on the TV and switched over to some game show.
Tovar didn’t look up from his knife, but he did snort when a contestant answered incorrectly. “Idiots,” he grumbled. “All of them.”
“Oh look, a question on geography,” William said, dropping into the other chair with a barely concealed smirk.
That got Tovar to lift his head, and he nearly growled at the TV. “That is not in Africa,” he grumbled. “How are people so–” He said something in Spanish that was very definitely not complimentary.
Keeping your laughter to yourself, you settled down as well to watch the entertainment that was Tovar swearing at the game show.
You woke in bed, still fully clothed but for your shoes. Embarrassment flamed, but you still got up to face the day.
“You’ll have to come up with your own distractions today,” William told you teasingly over breakfast. “I’m fresh out of ideas.”
You snorted. “I’m sure I can think of something,” you agreed dryly. “If nothing else, there are at least three packs of cards in this house.”
“Poker?” William asked, eyebrows raising.
Your smile turned a little cheeky. “Go Fish.”
Tovar snorted, shaking his head.
“Actually, I have a few questions.”
They both paused at that, exchanging a look. Tovar shrugged, and William nodded slowly.
“Alright then,” William said, meeting your gaze. “Ask.”
“What do you think of your employer?”
William tipped his head to the side, watching you closely. “He pays well.”
You snorted. “Not quite what I meant.”
He shrugged. “He doesn’t hover, he pays well and on time, and he keeps us as busy as we want.” He paused for a moment. “Even if he does enjoy his little games.”
“Would you say he’s trustworthy?”
William shrugged, tapping his fingers against the table. “He knows what he’s doing,” he said instead, which was a sort of answer. Not the kind you wanted, but good enough.
So you simply accepted it and stood, gathering up the dishes.
Spending time with the dragons was a balm to the anxiety that refused to settle in your gut. Eggsy chirped at you and greeted you with a gentle nose boop, and this morning he finally didn't hiss at William.
William did start asking you questions about the dragons, which was distraction for a couple hours. He even let you walk him around the property while you told him about the one school trip you'd seen visit.
"So you don't live here, then." The raised eyebrow from him was not quite judgmental.
"No," you admitted. "We… haven't quite gotten to that conversation yet."
William nodded slowly, gaze flitting over you. Then he looked away. "Here." He dug into his pocket for a moment and pulled out a business card, holding it out to you. "If you ever need help, let us know."
You took the card carefully, with a lingering sense of deja vu. "Thank you."
He nodded. "What else needs to be done out here?"
Still shocked, you allowed him to take over, herding you back to the house.
Most of the way through the day, William stepped outside to take a phone call. Although he didn't move from his position sprawled across the couch, Tovar watched the door like a hawk.
You had no idea what to expect, but you weren't expecting William to come back inside and nod to Tovar. "Let's go."
"What?" You squeaked, looking between the two. "But… now?"
William smiled reassuringly at you. "Your beau is returning," he told you as Tovar got up, grabbing the few of their belongings that were both packed already. "He'll be back shortly. The danger period has passed, and it's better for everyone if we're not here when he gets back."
You had so many questions. So very many questions. But the two didn't give you a chance to ask, making their way out the door again.
"Thank you, for your help."
That got them to pause, and they both turned back to look at you. Tovar grunted before throwing himself into the car, whereas William actually grinned.
"Take care. We'll see you again." He waved before getting into the car as well. Within moments, they were on their way, gone just as suddenly as they had arrived.
You stood in the doorway watching their car go down the road, and then your heart kicked into overdrive. Jack was on his way home!
You whirled through cleaning and making sure everything was okay. After whatever had happened, you didn't want him to worry about a single thing.
It also helped to keep you busy, since your nerves wouldn't let you settle for more than three minutes at a time.
The instant you heard a car, you were on your feet and at the door, heart thrumming in your throat. Jack's truck pulled down the drive and stopped next to yours.
Jack got out, already looking over at the house. He met your eyes and smiled, a bit rumpled, a bit worse for wear, but here and whole.
You threw yourself out of the house and into his arms, holding tight to him. He held you tight, rocking you slowly side to side, one hand cradling the back of your head.
Everything else could wait.

06 x sky - jack daniels x reader (au)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
prompt: sky pairing: jack daniels x reader word count: 433 notes: fluff, small mention of alcohol, au as we don't know the movie here, no y/n, no reader description, jack being jack, don't have to read them but these two are from the december prompts summary: jack takes you on a drive for an unexpected valentine celebration
x. masterlist
Tumblr media
Jack had mentioned on more than one occasion that he didn't understand the draw of Valentine's Day. He was hands-on at the ranch and practically a borderline cowboy, a third-generation rancher he was more progressive than the generations before him, but Valentine's Day was a concept he really didn't understand which felt in contrast to his smooth tongue and charming demeanour.
So when he'd thrown a bag at you and your coat, telling you to head to the truck you'd really not put much thought into it. It wasn't like it wasn't the norm to drive the expanse of the ranch in the evening to ensure that all the livestock were accounted for and the fences were intact.
As you continued to drive, the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of fiery red and soft orange. The gentle sway of the truck as it rumbled along the gravel road was oddly soothing. Jack remained silent, his strong hands gripping the steering wheel tightly, his eyes focused on the road ahead. The radio crackled softly in the background, playing a country tune.
“Now, are you going to give me any clue what's going on?” you asked, hoping to glean some clue as to what he had planned.
“Now where'd the fun be in that Mabel?” He quipped with a sly grin.
You rolled your eyes at his nickname for you, “You can stop that.”
“Why'd I go and do that sugar?” he winked, “especially when it suits you so.”
Looking out to the road you realized he'd taken a right turn off of the main road, “Where are we going Jack?”
“You'll see, hold your horses,” he winked at you before looking back to the road.
Moments later he pulled the truck into park and jumped out and before you could unlock your door, he was there opening it and taking your hand. It took a moment to get your bearings, but you were on the far edge of the property where there was a clear view of the mountains beyond. With the glow of the sun setting, it framed the Kentucky mountain peaks in a breathtaking display of vibrant colours.
“Here,” he said, passing you a cold beer from the cooler you'd missed in the back of the truck. You took a sip, the crisp taste refreshing against your tongue. Jack leaned against the side of the truck, his gaze fixed on the mountains.
He drew you in closer, his arm enveloping your shoulder as he planted a kiss on the top of your head. “Happy Valentine's Day, Mabel.”

Chapter 4: Perhaps This Life Was Not My True Life
Pairing: Jack “Whiskey” Daniels x F!Reader "Sugar"
Summary: It's only a helping hand.
Word Count: 2.5k
Warnings: T, more flirtinggggg, allusions to sexual acts, descriptions of character death (not graphic), the FEMALE gaze (everyone is hot for the cowboy), Jack Daniels needs his own warning, not much in this chapter but will be explicit in later chapters, 18+ MINORS DNI.
Notes: You know I had to use the GIF. You know it. It's just too good not to. And we're finally to the chapter where it makes sense. I also bemoan the fact that we never got to see Jack on a horse, because that's just a travesty and another thing the Golden Circle robbed us of!

It’s an hour into the ride as you and Jack travel companionably side by side, trading flirtatious comments and learning about each other. Jack owns a small ranch a few hours away, home to a collection of smaller equines and fowl. He has a few kind neighbors, some older and needing assistance he happily provides. Never remarried, content to work the land and come into town to fulfill his deputy duties with the rest of Westworld’s lawmen, the Statesmen. It’s a life that offers long stretches of quiet punctuated by action, just to Jack’s liking.
In return Jack asks about your life outside of Sweetwater, which you try to answer in ways that would translate to things he'd understand. Your work, your family, the gaggle of girls you're following. He doesn't touch on the subject of your fiance again, and you don't bring it back up. Instead you share your hobbies, your experience riding, and try not to sneak too many glances at his worn hands or his thighs straining against denim. He's an attentive listener, more so that any first date you've been on.
Not that this is a date. Of course not. Just a suave cowboy coming to a lady's aid and sharing you lives on a dusty road.
You’re in the middle of asking him about his donkeys, which pulls a sheepish smile onto his face, when an older man bursts onto the road, stopping to talk with Rosie at the first carriage. Jack leans over to get a better look, urging Alpha to overtake the carriages and make contact. You hang back at his insistence.
“Might be something, might be nothing,” he says cryptically, bouncing as he urges Alpha up to the man. You once again get to watch his powerful posture from afar like a pining Victorian woman.
Do they have a Victorian-world? You wouldn’t put it past Delos.
They all talk for a moment, Beth poking her head out to shout something. Rosie opens the carriage door and speak to the girls as Jack moves back to you.
“All okay?” you ask, the stranger still waiting on a shifting horse. He’s older, light brown hair fanning under his hat, lines cutting into his face from age and worry. His clothing is worn and faded, almost blending in with the wind-blown landscape. He looks distraught, peering up and down the road.
“Rancher’s had his cattle break through the fence. They’re scattering across the neighboring property and his sons are three days’ ride away.” Jack chews at his mustache, wringing the reins in one hand that is too big and thick-fingered for his own good. Or yours.
“Sugar, I feel obliged to assist as I have plenty of experience wrangling cattle.”
“Of course,” you say, a little emptier at the thought of rejoining the group. As intense as the conversations got, you have to admit you enjoy Jack’s company. His smile is bright, the banter just short of anything unsavory, and feeling the hot breeze in your hair and the relaxing gait of a horse under you has made you nostalgic. For old times, freer times, when you felt as wild as an unbroken stallion and anyone who touched you was liable to come away bloody.
“You’ll be needing Copper back,” you say, swinging off the saddle as Jack makes a noise of protest.
“No, ma’am, please…” he starts to say when the slam of the carriage door interrupts. Lacey is stumbling out, shouting at the girls behind her. She catches sight of you, eyes bright as she hurries over.
“Loose cattle, that’s exciting!” she says, making your eyebrow quirk up.
“Yeah, and we’re…treasure hunting,” you laugh back, patting Copper’s neck fondly. Lacey looks at you like you’ve started speaking nonsense.
“You have to go!” she insists, leaning in closer so Jack and the other girls can’t hear as well. “I know this wasn’t what you were hoping for…”
You shake your head, a beaming smile on your face.
“No way, it’s your bachelorette! We are gonna party and find some treasure and…” Lacey stops you with a look you know well. It’s the same one she used to give you when you agreed to something because it made the larger group happy.
“Look, I’m having a great time. I’m so happy you’re here, and my friend, and going to be in my wedding.” Her eyes are so kind it makes you want to deflect. “But as far as I can tell, we’re all going to have an amazing time. We might end up together at the end of the night, we might not. We knew what we were getting into.” You roll your eyes but she squeezes your shoulder. “I’ll see you when I see you, and I better hear some good stories.” She nods at Jack, who gives her a confused tip of his hat back.
“You keep my friend here safe and out of trouble,” she orders with a stern edge to her voice.
“Yes, ma’am?” he replies with some confusion in his voice, eyes darting between the two of you. Blink and you’d miss it, but you also thought you might have seen some relief.
“Lacey…” you try one last time, shushed with a knowing look and a swish of her skirts.
Apparently Westworld is lining something up for you. You guess it’s time to stop resisting.
“Could you use another pair of hands? I’ve done my fair share of cattle runs, though it’s been a while,” you ask Jack, looking up at him haloed in the harsh sunlight. There it was again, a look of relief laced with excitement you're not sure how to interpret.
“Of course, but Sugar…” Jack cautions without much conviction as you swing back up into the saddle.
“You heard the bride, I’ve got orders,” you say with a crooked smile, tilting your hat down lower on your brow. “And you’d best find a better name than Sugar, I’m not as sweet as you might think.” With a light slap of the reins and a lean forward in the saddle, you urge Copper to follow the older man now cantering back to his farm. Jack chuckles and picks up the pace.
“When I find something that suits you, I’ll let you know,” he calls as you both hurry to catch up.
Tumblr media
Inside the carriage, Lacey stumbles back into her seat.
“Did you tell her to go get a piece of that cowboy who’s been eyeing her all afternoon?” Dina said, a wicked smile on her face. Lacey fishes a flash out of her bag, knocking it back with a thumbs up as the girls all cheer.
“Oh god, I hope he’s packing,” she gasps at the end of her swallow, making more giggles erupt. Beth lifts an eyebrow with a sour expression.
“Isn’t she engaged?” she says prissily, making Sophia turn her perfect face to her.
“Aren’t you married? I’m sure we’ll lose track of you tonight,” she drips out. Lacey waves her hand, making a face at the burn of the vodka.
“Her fiance is a fucking asshole. The way he talks to her, you’d think they were already divorced. I’ve told her it’s not too late to call it off, but she’s just…fuck, I don’t know. Maybe there’s something going on behind the scenes. But either way, if she’s going to marry that douchebag, she deserves at least one night with a stallion. And I deserve another drink!” The carriage erupts into laughter as the girls take off, less one who is off on her own adventure.
Tumblr media
The ride to the ranch is fast and quiet, but the pumping of your heart would have drowned out conversation anyways. The smile on your face, maybe the first genuine one all day, will probably make you swallow a bug as you keep pace with Jack and the rancher. He’d introduced himself as Jeb and shouted that he had about 100 head of cattle that broke out into the neighboring field. The ten minute ride places a deep burn in your quads and calves, not used to galloping this hard this long. It’s a welcome ache, a distracting one from the other ache you’ve been ignoring all afternoon.
Jack is holding a strong pace beside you, leaning forward enough that his waist paunches a little into a soft stomach. His hands grip the reins firmly, leather woven through his blunt fingers, and with the wind flapping his jacket open you catch sight of a coil of rope and…a whip?
Cowboy indeed.
As you crest a hill, the horses slowing to accommodate for the incline, you finally see the cattle dotting the valley. Their brown and white bodies are mostly clumped together, a few stragglers but for a full fence breach it could be worse. Jeb wipes sweat from his brow as you do the same to the back of your neck.
“Drink, ma’am,” Jack says, offering you a canteen of water from a saddle bag. You nod and take it breathlessly, savoring a few deep swigs from the metal mouth. Pulling away, a cool dribble runs from the crest of your lower lip over your chin, tracing a soothing path down your throat. As you hand the canteen back Jack's eyes dance down your neck until he finally tears them away. His brazen gaze makes you lick your lips, sliding the lower one between your teeth as you try to pull yourself back to the task at hand.
“C’mon, they’re easier to get while they’re still all bunched together,” Jeb calls over, and the three of you descend into the valley. Jack holds out the rope to you, your fingers curling around the coil to find a neat lasso.
“You ever roped before?” Jack asks, the thundering of hooves starting to drown out your voices.
“A little, not very good at it,” you shout back.
“If a calf runs off, just keep him close and we’ll come get ‘em,” Jack replies before you close in on the herd.
You worry that it’s been too long since you’ve run any cattle, the minutiae of the process foreign, but as you descend and fan out it’s like an old dance you forgot the name of, but your body remembers. The whoops and whistles Jack and Jeb trade indicate directions, moving to surround the larger part of the herd. The occasional crack of Jack’s whip helps to redirect, the sound lifting the hair on the back of your neck. The mass is slower to move but once the mwn get them going they’ll have to be wary of getting trampled. You’re left with the thinner side, a few grazing away from the group. With a few whoops of your own, you start ushering them back to the group using Copper’s build and quick hoof steps to tempt them into action. The cows low grumpily but start to amble back.
You continue your path, inching closer as you sweep up and down the outer line of them. There are only ten or so, the rest of the herd now moving back whence they came, but the thrumming accomplishment in your chest makes you feel like you wrangled a hundred head more. Jack is a small figure in the distance, but every now and then you can see him turned to you. You wish you could tell if he was smiling.
A loud bray sounds from your smaller group and a calf streaks away, all legs and uncertain movement as he rushes out.
“Shit,” you spit, whistling loudly to keep the cows moving in the right direction while you give chase. He’s not faster than Copper, but unpredictable in his dashes and stumbles. The rope in your hand is needed, purposeful, but you hold it with uncertainty as you try to remember the proper technique.
“Just…fuckin’ throw it, dammit,” you curse to yourself, releasing the looped end and a length of the coil. The first attempt glances off the calf’s haunches, making him spin and cry louder as he moves further away. A litany of curses fall from your lips as you speed the loop back up to your fingers, urging Copper closer. Another toss. Another miss, this time bouncing off his snout.
“Goddammit!” you growl, snapping your head back to the stragglers. They’ve got the larger group in sight now, which makes them more willing to join unbidden. You’re thankful for that at least. Jack is starting to head towards you, his vocalizations to Alpha thin over the thundering hooves. Dammit, you don’t want to fail in front of him. Not when you could succeed and make his soft brown eyes glow, his hand wrapping around your shoulder, mouth breaking into a breathtaking smile.
Taking a grounding breath, you loosen your wrist, line up the lasso, and flick it over one more time.
Success.
The loop gracefully falls over the calf’s head, tightening as he pulls against it. The sudden jerk against the rope makes the tail end zip across your wrist, a bright sear of pain blossoming before you yank the rope taught. The calf fights for a moment more, kicking and complaining before he settles.
“You alright?” Jack shouts as he nears, and you dazzle him with your smile as you hold up the rope end.
“Got ‘em!” you crow, triumphant in such a small way but just as you suspected, Jack’s smile makes it feel like you’ve won a much grander prize.
“Atta girl, I knew you had it!” he shouts back, stopping a few feet away. You’re hot and sticky and covered in a film of dust that dries your mouth out, and Jack is flushed and sweating heavily through his shirt. He’s coiling the whip back up, knuckles tightening around the loop.
You’ve never wanted a man more.
“C’mon, we’ll bring up the rear. The head is already going back through the break.” Jack turns Alpha back and waits for you to fall in step, the calf lowing plaintively but following.
“Not bad for an out-of-towner,” Jack shouts, and you try to hide the smile that’s creeping onto your face. You don’t think you succeed.
“I think you’ll find I’m full of surprises,” you tease back, and out of the corner of your eye Jack’s eyes dance over your body.
“Ain’t that the truth.”

>> See, because it didn’t. I don’t know why, but I’m still sane even knowing, experiencing my death over and over. And maybe it’s what Maeve said, that suggestion she put in my head that started me on this journey, but it sure as hell isn’t what’s driving me now. It’s the woman beside me. Because when I look at her, I feel what I'm supposed to feel when I think of my wife, if any of my story was even real. And I know she's human, she's the guest, the reason we run this maze over and over, but I can't help but be drawn to her. Maybe it's because she's trying so hard not to believe in this place. Maybe we're both searching for something. But I'm going to keep this up, and give her everything I can, because I...well, I don't quite know why. But I intend to find out.

Pairing: Rancher! Jack Daniels x Ranch hand! Reader
A/N: this is a teaser for the series, i'm beginning to outline it and wanted to share a little bit with you since i'm not sure when posting will begin
ao3 link || series masterlist || main masterlist || ko-fi
Bright sunshine reflected off the frame around rearview mirror, making you squint your eyes to see through the amber of your sunglasses as it hit you square in the eye. The blue expanse of the sky littered with wispy clouds blurred.
The rumbling of the engine underneath the hood was a comfort that had soothed you since childhood. Such a simple thing, to be in a vehicle that was hurtled down asphalt, eating it up foot by foot, yard by yard, mile by mile. Taking you to someplace new, transporting you into a liminal space where you didn’t have to think about anything but the road stretched out in front of you.
You glance at the directions you had printed out and laid over the passenger seat, too anxious to have typed it into your phone or into the device installed on your dash. The matte screen of it was blank, the power wire bouncing with the turbulence of the moving vehicle. It looked like there was two more curves on your path to the destination and you began to turn the wheel ever so slightly to take the one coming up. The crunch of errant pebbles underneath the tires wiping the anxiety away as the hills all around you flattened out to open plains.
Lush, tall grass as far as you could see, wooden fences winding through patches of the land. Splotches of dark color corralled within the spaces. You wondered what they could be, thoughts lost until a long, high-pitched whistle broke the peace within the cab as it snuck inside your cracked windows. You turned your head along with the closest herd of animals.
You don’t know how you initially missed the shape of the tall man atop a horse as it galloped over the land. The steady beat of hooves on the ground mirroring the ones of your heart as your eyes took in the figure. From the top of his wide brimmed cowboy hat to the spurs on his boots. He was in a complete partnership with the horse he was perched on, both of them working seamlessly together to circle around a body of what you could assume was cattle as the shine of horns glinted in the sun.
A lasso whipping up into the air had you subconsciously slowing down, your right foot lifting off of the accelerator pedal. Directing the vehicle out of the middle of the road, stopping to a crawl along the right side. Distantly following the pair as they successfully landed a hold on biggest one of the herd and began to guide them away from where they had been roaming.
Stopping at the line of wooden fence that must’ve outlined a part of his property, the man dismounted and effortlessly unhinged a portion of it and swung it open. With smooth movements and controlled balance, the man was back in the saddle.  Another sharp whistle had the herd of cattle moving through the open fence.
Breath catching in your throat as the man turned to face you across the plain, his left hand secure around the horse’s reigns while his right lifted up to tilt his hat in a greeting. You could see from your spot on the road, the vehicle barely moving along now that your foot was easing down on the brake, that he was grinning.
Heat flooded your cheeks as you realized not only had you been outright starting as the stranger went about his day, but that your vehicle had nearly halted as you did so. The sound of your engine still running giving you away. You raised your hand up in response, palm open and fingers trembling slightly.
With a click of his tongue to guide the horse after the herd, he turned around in the saddle, lasso circling in the air above him in a hypnotizing manner. Snapping his wrist, the rope flew out to wrap around the top of the open partition and it clanged shut with a tug. Turning back around to face forward, the horse sped off and disappeared over the other side of a rolling hill.

The sun is still clearing the surrounding hills as you pad into the kitchen for your morning coffee. Your ritual mimics that of your husband’s, completed a few hours earlier- there’s a spoon in the sink and a pod still in the machine. A note on the fridge- morning ride xo -makes you smile as you open it for milk. You’ve gotten used to early mornings since joining Jack’s ranch all those years ago, but you’ll never be as early of a riser as him. He always leaves a note if his sunrise activities take him outside the house, though.
You crack a window while the coffee machine whirs, savoring the fresh, cool air. It’s damp with morning dew and smells of green, living things- no trace yet of the heat that would rise with the day. The sky is still pale, its mantle of clouds stitched in pink and gold.
You take a test sip of coffee before heading for the front porch. Perfect. Your spoon joins Jack’s in the sink.
You almost drop your mug at the sight that greets you beyond the threshold.
Jack is facing away from you, elbows resting on the wooden fence that divides your lawn from the neighboring field, seemingly surveying the land. With his hat and boots silhouetted against the landscape, it’s a moment that belongs in a museum. Maybe that exhibit you saw a poster for recently- Cowboy Candids from Tennessee, or something.
All he wears on his upper half is his gun holster. The leather straps criss-cross the expanse of his bare back, bridging the valley of his spine and accentuating the muscled contours of him, wrapping around his shoulders in a way that makes your mouth water.
But that’s not the part that was so unexpected.
Once you recover from the shock, a slow grin spreads across your face. You take a another sip of coffee, rolling the taste over your tongue, savoring the view for as long as you can while Jack is unaware.
You let out a long, low whistle. “Well, good morning to you too, cowboy. I didn’t think the moon was supposed to be rising at this hour.”
Your mug thunks carefully onto the porch table. The chair cushion creaks as you settle into it, wiggling with the anticipation of someone about to watch their favorite movie.
Your husband’s bare ass jiggles as he starts to turn.
You’ve seen these shorts before, but not for awhile. Almost a year, maybe, if the last time he wore them was in the summer. You refer to them as his “butt cheek cutoffs”, and if that doesn’t explain why they’re you’re favorite, well, then. Your imagination isn’t being literal enough.
His ass isn’t totally bare. His right butt cheek, in fact, is completely covered. Look at him from the right side, and he could be wearing perfectly average denim cutoffs.
From the left side, however- it wouldn’t be unreasonable to wonder if he’d been riding a very bad-tempered horse while cutting them. The bottom of his left butt cheek hangs like ripe fruit, plump and exposed and begging for a squeeze.
From the inner thigh outward, the hem is shorn along the bottom edge of the pocket. It veers sharply up at the pocket’s outer edge, shortening the length by another inch by the time it reaches the leg’s outer seam. They fare no better in the front- several inches of front pocket extend beneath fraying strands of denim on both sides, the improvised hems left with barely enough fabric to preserve his modesty.
Not that Jack Daniels has ever valued modesty all that much.
“Well now, look who’s up early,” Jack crows. His Tennessee vowels dip and swoop like cursive writing, piling up against one corner of his grin. “I didn’t expect you to be out of bed yet, darlin’.”
He lounges backward against the fence now, arms spread. The holster is occupied by his favored revolvers, one swaying against either side of his ribs. Jack props one of his boots on the lowest slat of the fence, lazily letting his leg fall open wider.
Your gaze immediately zeroes in on the swath of inner thigh revealed. The minimal length of his shorts betrays that he can’t possibly be wearing anything beneath them- there’s only a thin layer of denim between you and that bulge making a strain of the zipper. You grip the arms of your chair a little too tightly, your breathing deepening as hunger starts a slow swirl in your belly.
“The birds woke me,” you answer belatedly, mind still caught up in the sight of Jack’s long, bare legs. His boots end just low enough to display an alluring curve of calf- but it’s his thighs, sturdy and thick and corded with muscle, that are far more enticing at the moment.
Jack’s grin widens, delighted as ever that his antics have caught your attention. “I’m sorry to hear that, honey. You sure you don’t wanna go back to bed?”
His head cocks at an angle you’re all too familiar with, the brim of his hat tilting along with it. Jack rests a hand on his thigh, hooking his right thumb in the waistband of those shorts- lowering it far enough to reveal the crease of his hip.
Your lips part. There's so much of him on display. Jack Daniels is a lot of man at any time, tall and broad and brazen, but like this- strength sheathed in bare skin everywhere you look- how are you supposed to cope?
“Come up here,” you rasp.
Jack makes a show of each movement, oozing off the fence like liquid sin. But his long stride is a shade too quick to match his usual swagger. You rise to meet him as he ascends the steps- and then you’re in each other’s arms, mouths colliding in a hungry kiss. A deep, satisfied sound vibrates in your throat. Jack grunts when you knock his hat off, burying a hand in his hair. His bedheaded waves are only slightly flattened, still soft and free of product before his morning routine.
You keep a gentle grip on him when Jack breaks for air, panting against your lips.
“Mm, what’d you say to that-” another quick kiss “-bed, darlin’?” He works damp kisses down your jaw, hands splayed along your spine with enough pressure to make your back arch into him- not that you planned to put any distance between you.
You sneak one hand beneath his gun and around his back, gleefully grabbing that handful of exposed ass cheek and squeezing.
Jack’s hips jolt, and you make a noise of relish. The smooth flesh fills your palm perfectly, squishing and molding like the world’s best stress ball. Jack once joked that he’d spent so much time riding- horses, motorcycles, you name it- that he’d chafed off all the hair on his ass. After much thorough examination, you’d concluded that he was right- but, you’d promised, with a kiss to his still-heaving chest, you didn’t mind in the least.
Oh right, Jack asked you a question. “Too far away,” you answer, a gasp slipping out when he sucks hard at the juncture of your neck and shoulder.
You maneuver him until you have Jack pinned against the wall of the house. “You up for some porch fun time, cowboy?” Your words dampen the skin of his neck, your kisses following.
Jack cuts a glance sideways, to where the porch swing sways innocently near the corner of the house. You know exactly what he’s remembering- knew when you suggested it that the three of you would remember it every time you used the porch from then on.
Your husband exhales a shuddery breath. “Anything you want, honey.” Jack’s gaze is full of intent when it returns to yours.
Fluttering fills your belly for an entirely different reason. You hold his stare for several heartbeats; then you have to kiss him again, softly, although it quickly mounts to the same fervor as before.
“What I want-” your lips brush his ear “-is to take these ridiculous, sexy shorts off you, and then suck your dick.”
Jack emits a faint, strangled noise.
“Is that okay?”
“Yes ma’am.” Jack manages a grin, his eyes round and hungry.
First, you wrap your fingers around the loops of his gun holster. You draw the leather straps down his arms, dragging them very deliberately against his skin, pausing when the bands encircle his wrists.
“Jaack,” you coo. Your husband has tipped his head back to rest against the wall, his eyes half-closed, heavy with desire. Besides his chest, rising and falling with hitching breaths, he holds himself perfectly still; tension thrums in his arms, taut with the effort of giving you the reins.
He rolls his head back toward you. The tip of his tongue peeks out to wet his lips.
You smile at him, all shameless adoration. You have no orders for him- you just wanted to see his face.
Jack gives a breathless chuckle as you continue, removing and carefully setting aside his holster. “You’re gonna kill me one day, darlin’.”
“You’re gonna like it,” you counter.
A last quick kiss to his lips, and then your journey begins in earnest. Down his neck and chest, over the plane of his belly, you plant swirling, open-mouthed kisses. He tastes of salt and hay and the open air; it rouses you, that wild combination, the same way it did when Jack first invited you for a ride on his property. Through various fields and an untamed stretch of woods, you followed him- until you returned to his house, where he followed you as together you explored every possible definition of the word 'ride'.
Now Jack groans, the same gorgeously stunned disbelief in his face as there was the first time you knelt before him. The flesh of his belly sinks between your teeth when you give into the urge to bite it. Just a little. You nibble your way to the button of his shorts, reveling in Jacks’s aborted twitches and gasps at each tiny pinch.
When your hands finally rest on his muscular thighs, you take a second to appreciate the sight above you. Jack’s chest is heaving, glistening with sweat and small red patches where your mouth traveled. His fingers are splayed against the siding of the house, as if searching for something to dig into that isn’t you.
Lowering your gaze again, you huff out a laugh. “Can’t believe I’m about to give you a blow job with you in just your cowboy boots.”
Despite his state, Jack laughs. “It can’t be the first time, can it?”
“I hope so.”
Then Jack doesn’t have anything else to say, because you’ve unbuttoned his shorts and taken his cock in hand.
You sigh happily as the heft of him fills your grip, all velvety skin and tiny, eager pulses of precum. They slicken his length nicely beneath the slide of your palm. Jack swears as you nuzzle into the crease of his hip, inhaling the musky, homey scent of him.
“Please, sugar,” he groans, his voice cracking.
In answer, you lick another bead of fluid from the tip of his cock. You lave your tongue around the flushed head, Jack’s ragged, whimpery sighs like music to your ears. Finally, you stretch your lips around him.
Jack can’t resist. One hand leaves the siding to cradle the back of your head. Just resting there, needing to feel you, rather than trying to influence your motions.
You smile adoringly up him- with your eyes, at least.
With your mouth you engulf his cock, bobbing your head slowly and wrapping your hand around what doesn’t fit. You listen as you do so, cataloging Jack’s little sounds and gasps and shivers while you work him gradually toward ecstasy.
Only once do you pause, a frown furrowing your brow at the unwelcome discovery that Jack’s shorts are in the way of you grabbing his butt again. You ease off his cock with an extra flicker of your tongue, and Jack chuckles as he catches on, helping you kick the shorts off around his boots.
With his smooth, squeezable ass filling your palm again, you plant your other hand on his hip to hold him in place as you take him in your mouth with renewed vigor.
Jack’s groan fills the air, blocking out even the twittering of the birds. All sense of place eludes you as you tune completely into Jack- his stuttered praise, the rapid rise and fall of his belly brushing your face, the taste of him when he twitches on your tongue.
His fingers flex against the back of your head. Sudden desperation scrapes in his voice. “Wait, honey, shit, can I come on you-”
You’re happy to oblige him. You release his cock, leaning back to quickly strip off your shirt. In the second it takes you, Jack has grasped himself in one big hand, stroking rapidly. The sight immediately mesmerizes you- the shiny red tip appearing and disappearing in his fist as he pants for release.
You turn wide eyes upward and force your mouth to work. “God you’re so pretty like this Jack, come for me, please-”
And that’s all it takes. Jack’s knees wobble and he moans loudly, his release startlingly hot against your skin. His mouth falls open. His brow crumples, even as he keeps half-lidded eyes on the picture he’s painting.
You coo and praise Jack throughout, admiring the high color in his cheeks. He sags against the wall as the last shudder fades; you can already see the flood of post-coital hormones relaxing his face. Relief and gratitude shimmer in his smile.
His blissed-out gaze drifts, catching on something to the side. A bleary frown tugs at his lips. “Shoot, sugar. You ain’t even had your coffee yet.”
You genuinely have to turn and look to remember. Your mug from earlier on the patio table, still visibly full, but the contents long-forgotten. A laugh bubbles up in your chest. Barely recovered from (what sounded like) a fantastic blow job, and this is what Jack fixates on?
“It’s okay. I’ll add some ice cubes, call it an iced coffee.”
Jack looks down at you, blinking himself more alert. He finally seems to recall that both you and he have his come dripping from somewhere, and with a grunt he kneels, picking up the shorts that started it all.
“Sorry, sugar. You sit yourself back down there, I’ll grab some for you.”
Jack uses the worn denim to gently wipe most of the mess from your body. When he’s done, he kisses you, deeply and appreciatively, and you purr, happily running your hands through his hair again.
Jack strides back inside- carelessly, gloriously naked, only his cowboy boots clunking against the floor. Cowboy Candids from Tennessee, X-Rated Edition. Giggling to yourself, you plop back down in your chair.
When Jack returns, he’s barefoot, his footfalls dulled. Three ice cubes clink into your cooled coffee; your husband’s nude form fills your vision.
Jack chuckles lowly where he’s stopped in front of you. “Sorry darlin’, I should have said- sit down with your pants off.”
“…What?”
Heat sparks in your core when Jack kneels. His fingers dance up to waistband of your pants, and you squirm, laughing. “What are you doing?”
The chair cushion is cool against your bare ass. Your breath catches at the gleam in Jack’s eye.
“You’re havin’ your coffee. I’m havin’ breakfast.”
You gape, but Jack simply waits, his mouth quirked. He cocks an eyebrow at where your now-chilled mug is starting to sweat.
(It’s not the only one.)
Swallowing, you lift the mug to your lips.
Jack gives you a devilish grin, and presses your knees apart.

This time, Jack didn’t try to keep you out of the loop. He didn’t quite let you help, but he did at least let you know what was going on.
“Harry knows,” he told you, focused on making breakfast for the two of you. “He and Merlin will fly out in the next few days. I told Javier as well, he’s got some contacts and will coordinate with them.”
“And where are you all meeting?” You tapped your fingers restlessly against the counter.
“Here.” He did look at you finally, shifting his weight. “Darlin’, I know you want to help…”
“I wouldn’t be that much help.” You wilted, just a little, but managed a wan smile all the same. “I know.”
Jack sighed and tapped his bare foot, debating something. “If you can get the time, come over.”
“What?” You blinked.
“I mean it. You already know everything else, I won’t keep this from you.” His lips twisted and he turned back to breakfast. “Learned that lesson already.”
You beamed at him. “Okay,” you agreed, wiggling a little. “I promise I won’t cause trouble or anything.”
Jack huffed at that, shaking his head as he brought two plates over to the counter. “Sweetheart,” he rumbled, ducking his head to look you in the eye, “you are trouble. But the best kind.” He kissed you, quick and sweet, before he backed off and took his seat.
“You’ll let me know when the meeting is, when everyone arrives?” You couldn’t help but double check as you washed the dishes.
“I will. I suspect Wednesday, but it depends on when Harry and Merlin can get here. They’ve got a few things to take care of on their end.”
“Are they, like, caretakers for the Royal line?” You frowned a little. It had been low-key puzzling you for a while, how Harry and Merlin actually fit into all of this.
Jack ducked his head but not before you saw his grin. “Not exactly,” he muttered, clearly amused.
“So? Are you gonna tell me?” You nudged him with your elbow.
Jack chuckled, shaking his head a little. “They’re more like… secret service. Of a sort.”
Your eyes went wide. “Seriously?”
“Mmhm. Met Harry on assignment, back with the military.” He shrugged, though he looked pleased. “Since he works with the Royals and with some other dragons, we got to talking. He hasn’t gotten rid of me since.”
You laughed quietly, leaning over a little into his chest. “Well, certainly works out well for us now.”
Jack hummed quiet acknowledgement, his hands landing on your hips to hold you there for a few long moments. “I’m glad you’re here.”
“So am I.” You tipped your head back against his shoulder, briefly closing your eyes to enjoy the moment of peace while you could.
After all, it wouldn’t last long.
After you’d gone back home, Jack confirmed the day and time of the meeting, and you managed to get a couple days off work. Knowing Jack would be busy, you drove yourself out to the ranch and waved at him where he stood with Javier and an unfamiliar man before you headed back to see Eggsy.
The dragon was no longer truly a baby, as he was growing pretty quickly. He didn’t have to stretch to boop your nose anymore, and he shed scales practically every other day. Which made him itchy and occasionally irritable, although he rarely got snappy with you. (Jack, on the other hand, had had to scold the dragon more than once for bad behavior.) The gold on his wings shone in the sunlight, and he was mottled blue and green and brown as his adult colors came through.
In short, he looked like a teenager. You felt a little bit bad for him.
“Hi darling,” you murmured, scratching his eye ridges. Eggsy cooed and snuggled in closer to you, enjoying the attention.
“So this is the wee lizard.”
You and Eggsy both jumped at the voice behind you, and you turned to see a bald man standing there, arms crossed over his chest, dark sweater pulled tight across his shoulders. He looked very unimpressed.
“And you are?” You shifted, putting yourself between the man and Eggsy. Rationally, you knew that the fact that he was here, on the ranch, unsupervised, meant that Jack trusted him. But you had no idea who this guy was, and you were a little bit protective of Eggsy.
His lips quirked but he didn’t comment. “Merlin.”
“Oh.” You relaxed a little, shoulders dropping. “I’m–”
“I know who you are.” He took two steps closer, giving you a more thorough look-over. “You’re the one who’s gotten us this far.”
“Um.” You blinked at him, startled. “I don’t know about that.”
“Don’t you?” He didn’t smile, but something in his eyes warmed. “Hm. I’ve been told you named the wee lizard Eggsy.”
You couldn’t help but laugh at the sheer disdain in his voice. “Yeah, it made more sense at the time,” you agreed, grinning back at your little dragon. “It kind of stuck, though.”
Merlin heaved a long-suffering sigh. “Well, it can be changed,” he grumbled. “Come here, little one.”
Eggsy hunkered down behind you, wings tucked tight, tail lashing back and forth. You stepped out of the way, shaking your head when Eggsy tried to follow you.
“Nuh uh. You have to meet people eventually and learn to play nice. Might as well start with him.”
Eggsy drooped like the dramatic child he truly was but slunk forward all the same. All of three steps. Before he stopped and stretched out his neck to sniff Merlin’s hand instead.
“I see you met Merlin.” Jack walked over to you, immediately wrapping one arm around your waist to tuck you into his side.
“Mmhm. Who else is here?” You leaned into his warmth gratefully, watching Eggsy investigate Merlin with more energy now. Here meaning he began to poke the long-suffering Scotsman.
“Javier, and Marcus Pike from the Bureau of Dragon Management.” Jack hesitated a moment. “Harry is around somewhere.”
“He’s talking to Champ.” Merlin didn’t even look at you two, still focused on Eggsy.
“We’ll have to go fetch him before we start planning.” Jack smirked suddenly. “You wanna do the honors, Merlin?”
Merlin gave Jack a flat look. “No.” Turning, he strode back up to the house, Eggsy following him most of the way before bounding back to you.
“Guess we’re gonna go get him.” You grinned, reaching out to rub Eggsy’s snout. “Shall we?”
Jack heaved a sigh but relinquished his grip on you. “S’pose so. Should get this show on the road.”
“Hey.” You turned and grabbed his hand, frowning just a little. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” But he didn’t meet your gaze, looking out across the field. “C’mon, let’s go get Harry.”
“Jack.” You tightened your grip on his hand, stepping in his way. “Talk to me. Please.”
Jack dropped his head and sighed. “Darlin’... It’s just me bein’ silly. Nothing to fuss over.”
“It’s bothering you,” you pointed out reasonably. “Let me help.”
He sighed again. “Just… Worried.”
“About the rescue?”
“About leaving you.” He smiled, a little bitter, a little wry, a little self-deprecating. “I know you’ll be safer here. Nothin’ should happen.” He paused for a moment, turning his hand to twine his fingers between yours. “Should. And that bothers me.”
“I’ll be fine.” You chewed on your lower lip for a few moments. “Would it make you feel better if I stay here? On the ranch? So you know I’ll be safe with the dragons.”
Eyes a little wide, Jack leaned in close until his forehead bumped yours ever so gently. “Would you?”
“For you? Yes.” You smiled, lifting your free hand to cup his cheek. “No problem.”
“You’re amazing.” Jack kissed you, soft and sweet, before pulling away. “Alright. I’m ready.”
“Took you long enough,” Harry drawled from somewhere off to the side. By his sudden stillness, you could tell Jack hadn’t noticed him there either. “Come along.”
You and Jack looked at Harry’s retreating back before looking at each other. You broke first, clapping one hand over your mouth to stifle your giggles. Jack heaved a long-suffering sigh that was about 200% more dramatic than he actually felt, making you laugh harder. Grinning at his clear victory, Jack towed you inside with him.
Introductions were quick - Marcus was a polite man who smiled and shook your hand and didn’t question why you were there. Javier gave Jack some kind of look but didn’t actually ask. Fortunately.
“How sure are you of this intel?” Merlin asked once the pleasantries were out of the way.
“Very.” Jack looked a little smug. “Got some old friends looking into the location, but preliminary findings show there’s definitely something big out there. It’s disguised, at least partially. I’ll know more tomorrow.”
“And how are we getting there?” Javier put his hands on his hips.
“We have a jet,” Harry offered mildly. “That will be sufficient to get at least us there, although if you have other agents that need to be there, they will have to find their own way.”
Javier grimaced and glanced at Marcus, who simply nodded. “Let us worry about that,” Javier grumbled.
“You two have transportation for the Royal? If she’s still there, she might not be in good shape,” Jack pointed out.
“Aye,” Merlin murmured. “We’ll have a few of ours on standby, in case they’re needed.”
“What kind of firepower are we expecting?” Marcus asked.
As they started into the nitty gritty of the planning, you took a half-step back, just watching them all. Though the discussion was calm, all of them were very clearly determined, and you could see rage in more than one pair of eyes. They all wanted to see the Golden Circle go down.
And even if you couldn’t help, not really, you were glad to be here. Because even just this made you feel better.
“What about her?” Merlin didn’t even look at you, although his question did make you blink and refocus on the conversation.
“She’s staying here.” Jack reached a hand back to take yours, squeezing gently. “She’s done her part.”
Nobody questioned him, thankfully. And the planning moved on.
“When are we doing this?” Javier asked, glancing around the circle.
“Sooner the better,” Jack said, rubbing his thumb over your hand. “We’ve got the advantage, before she realizes she’s been found out.”
“How much time do you need to prepare?” Harry glanced between Javier and Marcus.
“As soon as I can show my boss proof that this isn’t a wild goose chase.” Javier shrugged. “Won’t be hard to convince him after that.”
“Same with my boss.” Marcus smiled a little. “They’ll be anxious to get involved with this.”
Harry snorted quietly. “As far as we’re concerned, you two can decide who gets the credit for Poppy,” he drawled. “Although I do believe we’ll have better luck with a smaller force to get in.”
Javier and Marcus exchanged looks again before Javier sighed. “Big interagency hit like this? Good luck.”
“Unless you misrepresent the start time,” Jack offered casually. “Be on your way before they can give you marching orders, claim technical difficulties in receiving orders, so on.” He smirked.
“I always forget how devious you are,” Marcus said on a sigh, though he looked amused. “That might have worked for you, but it won’t work for me. My SO won’t have it.”
Javier just grinned. “I’ll manage,” was all he said on the matter.
“So, when are we leaving?” Jack crossed his arms over his chest, looking at each of them in turn.
“Tomorrow, early.” Merlin had pulled a tablet from somewhere and was working on it. “It will take time to get to the compound, and we’ll have to hike part of the way on foot. Leaving tomorrow should give you all time to do what you need to do.”
Nobody objected, and nobody brought up anything else. Nodding to himself, Jack looked at you before he spoke again.
“Don’t have room here for all of you to stay, but I can take care of dinner.”
To your surprise, each man looked at you before agreeing, leaving you a little flustered and definitely confused. Fortunately, they all saw fit to take themselves outside to do whatever they all needed to do, leaving you and Jack to work on dinner prep.
“Jack?” You glanced at him before refocusing on the potatoes. “What was that about?”
“Hmm?” Jack paused to look at you.
“They all… I dunno. Like they were looking for permission, or something.”
“Ah.” Jack ducked his head to hide his grin, very unsuccessfully. “Well, they’ve all known me for a while. Years, most of ‘em. So they may have made some assumptions ‘bout us.”
“Such as?” You raised one eyebrow, equal parts wary and curious about how cagey he was being.
“Pretty sure they all think you live here, darlin’.”
Well. That was nowhere near as bad as it could’ve been. “Would be a bit of a drive to work,” was the first thing out of your mouth.
Jack froze. You froze. Jack opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.
“Nope,” he said after a moment. “I wanna have that talk. I really wanna have that talk. But not tonight. Not right before…” He trailed off and grimaced. “One more thing to hold again Poppy, I guess.”
“Hey.” You set the knife down and walked over to him, wrapping your arms tight around his middle. “It’ll turn out fine. You’ll come back, and everything will be fine, and we’ll have that talk when you get back. I promise.”
“You’re too sweet.” Jack kissed the top of your head and just… stood there for a few moments, breathing and holding steady. Then he sighed softly. “Alright. Let’s finish this up, feed that lot, and go to bed. I wanna hold you tonight.”
“Sure.” You kissed him once, a bare brush of lips, and turned back to your work.
Things would be okay. This wouldn’t be the end of the discussion. You all just had to get through the next few days and it would all be fine.

I finally was able to find the alcoholic Mountain Dew! And it’s surprisingly not terrible
The case I got had: regular, Baja blast, clack cherry and watermelon. The worst one was the original. Something about the malt alcohol and lemon/lime/orange soda flavor just does not work
Black cherry DOES NOT taste like Code Red. It’s not as sweet and has a bit of a floral aftertaste. Best served ice cold
Watermelon tastes like a Jack Daniels Watermelon Punch or a Jolly Rancher that got dropped into a white claw. Not anything I’d slap a person to get my hands on, but it’s pretty good.
Baja Blast is the best. And most dangerous. You can’t hardly taste the alcohol and can easily forget it’s not just a soda.
All in all I’m not mad about the $20 it cost for 12 cans. But I do wish I could find just a case of the Baja blast

My friend and I both lost our Cracker Barrel virginities today. We had pancakes, eggs, bacon, something called hashbrown casserole, biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak covered in gravy, cheese grits, fried pickles, and I had a watermelon jack daniels drink that tasted like the jolly rancher flavor.

Title
A Song of the Reaper
Author
Daniel Brown
Author Bio
There are a tremendous number of authors named Dan or Daniel Brown. If you’re searching for the latest work of an old favorite, the author suggests confirming you’re where you want to be.
This particular Mr. Brown is a Certified Snooze-Hitter. His body has been sculpted by an imbalance of Pilates and nachos. He’s heard that he laughs like Peter Griffin and that the Cheshire cat would appreciate his smile. He’s mostly sure these aren’t compliments.
As a child, he aspired to a life of restfulness and sanity. He happened to become an author instead. He thinks that if you happen to read a book—or enjoy the thrill of action and the macabre—then A Song of the Reaper might be your match.
Genre
Horror, Adult Fiction
Summary
A beautiful forest. A terrifying legend.
There’s a spirit in the valley that’s dealing in death, and it’s ready to make an offer: your soul for a second chance. For one old rancher who’s bleeding out on the mountain, this sounds like a fine trade. For Jack Stott, who’s returning to his childhood valley, this means supremely bad timing.
The story of a missing man sweeps him into a search party on a blizzarding mountain, and when the party returns, it’s to the bodies of old neighbors cut up in dark corners and strewn along the valley’s only road. Two truths are unmistakably clear. The killer is close, and the killer isn’t human… anymore.
With no way to escape and survivors in diminishing supply, it’s up to Jack to make a stand, even if it means taking on a killer that might be immortal or a spirit that’s hellbent on reaping one more soul.

Favourite Part
So, as we learned with the last ARC I reviewed, I have a serious thing for horror stories that use NATURE to evoke terror. This book does NOT disappoint with the scary setting of a blizzard and a tall mountain in small town. I also liked some of the characters. The antagonist is fantastic in my opinion (there is so much to unpack here). The monster, thereaper, was a shocker, completely unexpected. There are a lot of little surprises in this book, little nibbles of information here and there that build up to the reveal and then the final battle. It definitely had my heart rate up at different points.
Least Favourite Part
I can’t really say my least favourite part because it’ll spoil something in the book. But if you read it, I am sure you will figure it out.
Recommendation
Honestly, yeah I’d recommend this to someone who wants a nice, simple horror to read. No real frills but some pretty good thrills, and very easy to read. Perfect for a cozy fireside reading session.
