PK and WL need to talk about something private, and WL looks at the tiny vessel tagging along by her wyrm's side

"Should it be here?"

"It wouldn't understand anything anyway."

"Still, it's...a little..."

He sighs lightly, "Yeah, I get where you're coming from... Vessel, come here."

He kneels down and orders them to sit by the door and wait for them while they talk, says he'll come pick them up once they're done and not to move, then the two go to talk on the balcony and close the door behind them

At some point, Xero/the guard bursts in and attacks PK in the middle of the conversation, managing to take them by surprise and so gets one good swing in before PK darts away and retaliates, pinning them down with soul blades, though he has to keep his wife from killing them on the spot - he doesn't want to be so hasty, knowing they're infected and not themself. He pulls out the sword from his chest and that's when they realise, it's covered in void...

Child harm/near death TW beyond this point

After a moment of shock White Lady, who's closest to the doors, runs out and all her husband can hear is a horrified, heartbroken scream. He feels nauseous, his stomach twisting into knots and feeling like his heart is in his throat as he runs out after her. He sees her in tears, cradling a tiny bundle soaked in void. There's- there's so much void. It covers the floor where he left their child vessel and soaks through his lady's shawl and clothes as she cradles them in her arms.

For a moment he's paralysed, before he just snaps. He flies back onto the balcony, screaming at the possessed guard that he'll kill her, he'll make her pay for this, and he slays them in his rage (something he'll regret and feel ashamed of later), still hitting and screaming at Her well after the possessed person is dead and she can't hear him anymore.

He collapses, panting, near tears, and just gets himself up and stumbles out the door and towards the two, he wants to see how bad it is for himself.

Flower survives, but just barely. They had multiple stab wounds and lost their left arm, if not for their parents immediately healing them they'd be dead. They're barely older than 5, still so very little and defenceless, PK is horrified at how could anyone hurt a baby this young and helpless (hypocrite), even if they're not alive.

They're still on bed rest because that was so much damage and their mother doesn't leave their side and their father only leaves when necessary. They still don't realise Flower's alive and they know they shouldn't be so attached but it still feels like their baby and they can't just leave them. WL spends the entire day by their side, gently stroking their hair and horns with her now permanently void stained hands and softly coos and sings to them

Of course, they quickly realise they ARE alive because no way in hell a toddler is getting this hurt and NOT crying and screaming the second they wake up <3

Which just makes this situation so much worse

I know that wyrms don't actually care that much but I do wonder if PK making himself bugsized is an anomaly among wyrms. I feel like he's just enough of a Strange Person to do that and I also feel like he made the decision when he was still Young And Stupid.

Tbf I feel like he had to have been an anomaly based on what Godseeker said when talking about his corpse. IIRC, she said something along the lines of how confused she was that he made himself small when the vast, magnificent form would have drawn much more attention. Godseeker, as I've said before, has a very flawed and biased perspective, but she does know enough about the link to worship and power for me to think she might be right with this one, in that PK's original wyrm form was much more adept at conquering and gathering prospective worshippers. Him casting that aside to take on a bug form and walk among them as their king is an anomaly that sticks out like a sore thumb among all the other, more distant gods of Hallownest, so I can only assume that he did it bc he was genuinely fascinated and charmed by them, which is further confirmed by the lengths he was willing to go to in order to save them vs use them as pawns/simply let them die like Unn and Radi. He def. got in over his head considering the fact that he canonically became a shut-in recluse, but the point is still there- dude's just weird.

I don't think this is a case of him being young and dumb either, PK is genuinely just a really fucking weird god. There's canon evidence of him bargaining with the Mosskin/Unn, Herrah, and the Mantis Lords as if he were their equal, even though he is a god who probably could have just enthralled and conquered them to do his bidding. He won his chunk of Hallownest by getting the moths to swap religion vs just brute force conquering, like Radi did. Dude's like that weird quiet kid in math class who does his level best to not be seen who you could probably kick over with zero effort, but somehow ends up being respected anyways bc he's a crazy good tutor if you can manage to corner and bribe him after class. W e i r d

(I also take her line about how abruptly his power vanished to be proof that his death was a suicide attempt, but tbf it was also very vague. Everything about him post-canon just screams 'I'm dying leave me alone' energy rather than him being fully done for, which makes sense given how terribly long it is for gods to truely die)

The only way I can really believe PK was injured enough that he couldn’t fight back is if like. One of the attackers ran him thru from behind or something and caught him by surprise, then like. Stood on/ broke all his hands so he couldn’t cast spells properly, THEN went ahead with giving him the ol’ Joel treatment

EVEN THEN I doubt it’d be easy (if even possible) to sneak up on the dude.

The only excuse I can give is that he was preoccupied with his worry for Hollow, searching for their mind amongst all his citizens, and didn’t notice the people coming up behind him/ assumed they were just a retainer (which tbf they were considering some of the traitors were palace staff)

favorite thing about them

i just think the most about characters and factions who existed on hallownest's fringes, and the radiance is the ultimate example of that. and she's just a character who we see very little of, and not for no reason! so you have to piece together a lot of shreds of information to get an idea of the kind of person she was...

like for one i think the fact the moths are peaceful as a rule is something that would make sense if it reflected on her? ive seen people refer to her as a war god and that's like. okay then explain to me why a war god would create people who aren't known for carrying weapons...and i spoke about it in the seer ask, but her being associated with death and funerals and ghosts is also something that makes sense to me. basically i think it's interesting that she's a character who exists almost entirely by implication, who you have to go to a decent amount of effort to figure out anything about her

trying to figure out how to put this...are you really gonna tell me there's nothing at all fishy about the pale king coming to hallownest, sealing the radiance away so he could rule without equal (this is stated explicitly in a dev note...), having the goal of ruling over the entirety of hallownest unopposed, and having bad relationships with every single other faction that didn't bow to hallownest rule...? like there's nothing weird going on there at all? the mantis tribe's treaty explicitly stated that it was something they agreed to to protect their village from hallownest expansion. like are you telling me he's not a colonizer and imperialist,

idk it gives me a weird bad vibe. like very genuinely the impression i had after doing dream no more (& again, i played hk totally blind save for knowing ghost & hornet were siblings) was like. "huh? so the radiance and the moths got subjugated by some dude But Actually taking revenge for that is so much worse and we have to put her down now you guys:((((((("

i just think it's so interesting! it's difficult for me to think the seer isn't drawing a parallel between ghost's situation and what happened to the radiance...this is not the first time ghost has been judged unworthy of life; if they were a good child, they would have died all that time ago, another body lining the abyss

the dreamers have condemned them to the same fate. there's no way to escape the dream; without the seer's aid, all they can do is, as she puts it, fade slowly away. and what for? yet another sacrifice extracted from them for the sake of this dead kingdom. by this point it isn't possible to do anything the dreamers fear - they need the dreamnail for that. they are condemned because they are inconvenient

and, well, the radiance was also put in that position...a lot of the game is about death and accepting that things will end, and the core arrogance of hallownest is repeatedly framed as the pale king declaring it would last forever. it's what vespa says the bees will have no part in, and there's ozymandius signs all over the damn place. so at least personally i find it significant that the radiance is repeatedly associated with the dead and the remembrance of the dead, her sacred place being a graveyard and her last follower being its groundskeeper, and she's also the one who pk needed to get rid of in order to make his eternal kingdom possible.

but accepting that things end is not the same as lying down and dying just because someone wants you out of the way for their own gain...which is exactly what the pale king wanted for both of them

for a literal "bro" i actually see grimm as her brother who she's on fairly good terms with. idk, just never thought there was any particular reason for them to be at odds, and my own read of grimm's actions and the ritual was that he's enacting some kind of belated vengeance against hallownest for what happened to the radiance. by his nature, he could never have arrived "on time", but desecrating a corpse is well within his abilities.

the whole "erasing her memory" thing was referred to as a seal in a developer's note. it's even referred to as a prior attempt before the hollow knight plan - "Thus the first attempt to seal Radiance failed, and the King had to try another method - the Vessel."

i really can't think of her as not being a death god; it's just the impression i get from both her explicit connection to dreams, and how the dreaming and the dead are so tightly linked. the dream nail shows you both, after all, and the ghosts you fight are dream warriors. also, a place important to the moths, and presumably to her as well, is a literal graveyard. and that adds another dimension - it is specifically important to her that the dead be remembered and honored.

she has no physical form, which is funny because every other god we know of does. the pale king, the white lady, unn, grimm, even the lifeblood creature...grimm and unn both have some connection to dreams as well, so it isn't like that precludes you from possessing a physical form.

so...well...i keep thinking about that first seal, and that attempt to erase her memory. did it involve killing her? is there a corpse somewhere, long forgotten in an unmarked grave? to one such as her, what greater insult could there be?

man. i have so many.

first is that i think it's honestly kinda gross to say that the pale king and the radiance were equally at fault for what happened - one of them's a fuckin colonizer who goes around trying to absorb every group in the area into his kingdom, and the other is the god of one of those groups. they are not on equal terms here...

i also think it's gross to make her worse for the purpose of making whoever your fave is - often grimm or the pale king - Better. like she needs to be the worst most evil sister so grimm can get some pathos, she needs to be the most violent beast so the pale king can get some pathos, etc.

i could go on but i would literally never stop.

Kid A Mnesia

Earlier this year Radiohead announced a special collection of merchandise to celebrate their upcoming triple album reissue of Kid A and Amnesiac. In Rainbows

XL Recordings, a subsidiary of Sony Music, released Radiohead's latest LP, In Rainbows, on 31 December 2007. The album has been certified gold in the UK and is the first major label release for the band since their EMI contract expired with Hail to the Thief in 2003. It has sold over three million copies worldwide and has topped the US Billboard 200.

Ah yes, more AU stuff for my children.. As winter approaches, or.. is already here, I just decided to put ‘seasons’ in Hallownest. I don’t know how exactly It’d work but yeah it gets cold. Winter in Hallownest! This is what this is about. I reasonably thought, would the bugs wear winter clothes? like, winter cloaks for the ones who wear cloaks.. I uh-- I think you guys get what I mean. For Lace of course she just wears something a bit warmer. She’s really the only one I’ve had an idea for for a winter outfit. Not much of a change, but still she’s lookin nice.

Once more, feedback is appreciated if you wish to s pe a k. I like hearing what people think about my silly rambles about the au. But, under this is where I ramble about the winter in Hallownest. Enjoy.

Okie dokie so basically, it gets really cold. Of course it does! and what happens when it gets cold? oh, it snows of course. Though, only in certain areas where it should snow. In any area exposed to the sky (Dirtmouth is a good example), there is snow. Much snow. The bugs underground are very lucky they don’t have to deal with snow. But they do have to deal with the cold. The Blue Lake freezes up at times, which means no rain in the City of Tears. But it does mean the puddles freeze and bugs often slip on them, and then fall on occasions. A certain someone, Lace, loves to watch people slip on puddles since it’s very very hilarious to her. Even when she herself slips, she laughs about it. The others... are concerned. Generally, bugs have to use fire to keep themselves warm. They don’t have air conditioning, duh. Or alternately, the bugs in Dirtmouth have Grimm! and.. Grimmchild but she’s usually elsewhere. The nightmare dream family (of course Grimm, Grimmchild, and Auntie Radi) radiate heat, the nightmare ones more so. Grimm and Grimmchild are very warm, no, not even warm, burning hot. It isn’t always like this, but they do it to keep themselves from getting cold. When it’s not so terribly cold, they just feel mildly hot. They are Dirtmouth’s heaters. Radi on the other hand, is not too keen on helping people stay warm, plus, she’s not as warm as her dear brother nor her niece. She doesn’t feel like helping others, she’d rather sip tea and talk to her ghost friends. Ghost is one exception because they don’t really...mind the weather? I mean, they’re always near Grimmchild so they get the heat that they need. But when she’s elsewhere they don’t really mind the cold. It’s as if they ignore it. The other vessels though, they aren’t alike Ghost and they do get cold. Other than that, here are some random things! Lace’s hands get sort of cold, and, Hollow tells her to wear gloves but she refuses because of her own reasoning that they may cause her pin to slip out of her hands in battle or something. Oh oh, and yeah, the other two knights wear cozy stuff like Lace does. They sorta.. match too. It’s kinda funny. Beryl for the most part refuses to wear winter clothes at times because they want to show how they can bear the cold. They can’t. Grimm is quite fine with being ‘Dirtmouth’s Heater’ because he can just sit down on the bench and let people stand around him as if he’s a fire. Grimm is a nice dude. It’s said that surprisingly, Hornet actually made the winter clothing that her knights wear, and Quirrel wears. I suppose she makes her own clothes? So, why not make clothes for others. The weavers that live in Hallownest once more do too make clothing for others, they’re all very nice spiders :> (This implies that Hornet made her knights clothes somewhat match on purpose lmao) I’m pretty sure all the fluff and fur is fake, or not?? I mean, I wouldn’t know where they get it from. The Nailmasters have fluff on their cloaks, so, why not others? Taria does approve of all the fluff she sees on other bugs clothing, she’s happy. Fluff is best.
