Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli

Synopsis: The graphic novel follows the life of Asterios Polyp, a paper architect and professor who perceives life in lines and spaces. When his apartment goes up in flames, he gets on a bus with only the change and lint in his pockets and ends up in a mechanic’s garage in small town America. The story alternates between the past and the present, breaking down the events and relationships that have colored the life he has now. The question then remains, can you use those colors to reshape your future?

My Quibs: It is a visually pleasing story. Mazzucchelli deftly uses color and line to create an experience that is semi-subliminal and as much of the story as the dialogue. He has an aesthetic in his use of white space and organization that is reminiscent of different artists and architects and I may or may not have been too distracted by all this intriguing design to fully grasp what was actually happening in the story. The graphic side is one entire half of the story, with so many layers that can probably be better dissected by someone more studied. The dialogue is one entire other half that also might as well be multiple compressed stories. He uses mythology to convey subconscious struggle, to define a character. He uses an unknown God narrator to provide insight into someone that never was. There are so many nuances to both the writing and the illustration, as many other reviewers have noted, it requires multiple reads. It’s a hefty book in more than just literal size.

Should you read it? I have to preface that I have an architectural background so the references and jargon Polyp uses amuses me and therefore I might have a little bias. But you don’t need to know art or architecture. If you just like insightful graphic novels, this one would be up your alley.

Similar reads? I can’t say anything can be too similar, but the last insightful graphic novel I read was Daytripper by Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba, both visual representations on life but in two very different ways.

(Spoiler Alert!) What was that last part? The meteor? Was it meant to symbolize the end? Sort of like a last-moments moment? Probably in keeping with the style of the book, it still caught me off guard. Does it represent the futility of life’s actions? Agh! I also don’t know if Asterios ever redeemed himself in the end. It was a long life of ego and success and returning to his ex-wife as a changed man doesn’t seem fulfilling to me. Maybe that’s what the meteor is for. Who know?
