Queenpins (2021)
Two coupon enthusiasts embark on a plan to start an illegal business but some low-ranking agents are on their trail.
The premise is fairly solid and unusual enough to be interesting. Both of the protagonists are criminals but presented with just enough ethical credibility that the audience can outright route for them, even the morally dubious areas like selling guns are resolved before the end in a satisfying but concise way.
Although there’s some comedy and it’s consistently amusing, the kind of humour doesn’t provoke raucus laughter. Much of the comedy is situational and relies on the bizarreness of the situation to be funny, as well as the performances being suitably likeable, which they are. Some supporting characters are also entertaining but it’s mostly superficial, by being based on true events it can’t be clever enough to vary the comical nature.
All the acting was fairly consistent and in the same style. The actors were well suited to the roles: the protagonists had a knack of explaining their criminal actions in a way that made breaking those rules both fun and fair. The antagonists were easily loathsome and the main victims were large corporations, and frankly… good.
There was some resolutions for the villains but there was very little screen time with the protagonists and one should expect more of a confrontation and possibly slightly more consequences for all the pettiness. The ending was satisfying, however despite being based on true events, it didn’t feel realistic, like the world was being suspiciously kind to them.
4/10 -It’s below average, but only just!-

The heft of Fisk's body was a crushing weight on Karen, blood pooling beneath her, spreading like angel's wings out from the dead-eyed gaze of the corpse draped atop her. Each breath sucked in burned in lungs, blue eyes locked onto the man who's life had just been brutally and violently ended. Shouts surrounded her but voices were distant, and all Karen could focus on was each breath in and out, the whispered words from the dying man ringing in her ears: "See, Miss Page...we are the same..."
Karen wasn't too certain of the details after that evening. She knew Poindexter had been broken, she knew Matt had reclaimed his title as the Devil, but what she didn't know was who pulled her out from beneath Fisk's body, who put her into that armored vehicle and drove away her shell-shocked, blood-soaked body to some quiet high-rise in the middle of the city and put her on the metaphorical throne. It wasn't her choice to become Queenpin, but she had made that decision that fateful night. She'd made the decision and so she did what needed to be done.
It'd been a tedious claw to the top from where Fisk had been. While the Kingpin dealt in blackmail more often than not, the Queenpin had a more straightforward and cutthroat approach. Those who questioned her power, who questioned her rule were summarily dealt with. It was not by her own hand, of course, but in due time there was not once a question about whether or not she was fit to be in his shoes.
It helped that the attack dog Fisk used was far more loyal to Karen than he ever was to Fisk - a lovesick puppy, Karen was aware, but anyone who dared to utter such a thing learned soon enough that Poindexter was also a ruthless killer with no qualms dirtying his hands when he was besmirched (or when his Queenpin was besmirched). It took a bit longer to convince Russo to join her side; his scrambled brain didn't help but Karen knew offering him some form of structure and sense of belonging would win him over in the end (no matter how much he had forgotten, the military was still ingrained within him).
Their loyalties were never once put into question but Karen also never let them too close to who she truly was. What she did do, though, was ask Poindexter to find someone for her. Just find, she had reminded him, and when he'd returned with the folder in hand, she'd called on Amos to get the car and take her to the address she'd been given.
It was in the dark of the apartment hovel - of course he'd find the shittiest place to live - that the woman sat, red-painted nails drumming along the arm of the chair only momentarily before stopping as she heard the tumble of the locks fall into place. Before the door was even fully open, her voice rang out through the apartment, calm and steady and even: "Hello, Frank."
The Queenpin had come to talk.
@penniesxdimes gets the Queenpin.
