Behind The Scenes...
Sheppard's Cottage, Henford-on-Bagley, 11:29am
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Allinah: Is it always so cold here?
Malie: ‘fraid so, Linah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Allinah: I don’t like it…
Malie: It took me a while to get used to it too, but eventually you acclimate.
Lilah: Well we won’t need to get used to it, all of us will be back home before too long.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kona: (to Allinah) And we’ll have a big party to celebrate!
Malie: I’ll come home to celebrate our victory, when that happens, but I’ll have to come back here after.
Lilah: Why?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malie: What do you mean why? I have school, I intend to finish.
Kona: Couldn’t you go to University in Sulani?
Lilah: Of course she could. That was always our plan anyways. I sent you to this mainland school to learn from other cultures, and because it’s what Stefano wanted-
Kona: Bastard-
Lilah: Mother. But the plan was always for you to return to Sulani after you graduated, and go to University there, shadowing me to learn what it takes to be a good Chief.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Malie: That was your plan, yes, Mama. But then the war happened. I graduated high school and got stuck here, and now I’m enrolled at Britechester and I really like it. I like my classes and my teachers and I like that Beck and I don’t have to do long distance-
Lilah: Of course. It’s not about the war or the school at all. It’s because you want to be near your mainlander boyfriend!
Malie: That’s a bonus, yes, but did you even listen to the other things I said? I like it here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lilah: Haven’t you learned what mainlanders are like from the disaster that is your father? From the invasion of the Windenburgians? Why won’t you listen when I say that Beck is bad news!
Malie: In case you’ve forgotten, Mama, it was mainlanders who rescued you from the imprisonment of the Windenburgians, who snuck in on a secret mission to get the three of you out. It was my mainlander relatives, ‘Linah and I’s family from Newcrest, who were there to celebrate my High School graduation. It was the Empress who housed me at her palace this summer until the dorms opened because that’s where Aunt Misha was staying, and she called me family. It was the Empress and her government who gave us this house to live in until we can get back to Sulani. My father is the most evil man I know, but not every mainlander is exactly like him! You wanted me to learn about other cultures while I was here? Maybe you should too.
Tumblr media
Kona: Malie, do not disrespect your mother in this way.
Lilah: No, if that’s how she feels, then that’s how she feels. Is there anything else?
Tumblr media
Malie: …. I just wish you wouldn’t let what happened with our father poison you against every other mainlander out there. They’ve done so much for us. I think I’ve had enough family time, I’m going back to my dorm. Goodnight.

Aaaaaand I'm back! Did ya miss me? Admit it, you missed me! Ok, you're probably waiting for me to get the theatrics over with, so I won't take too long. Anyway, today we have Conium maculatum, also called Hemlock!
Which you probably know about because Socrates used it for his execution. Because of *ahem* rich cultural background, it also has many nicknames, such as woomlick, beaver poison, poison parsley, bunk, hever, caise, devil’s flower, gypsy flower, break-your-mother’s-heart, lady’s lace, scabby hands, and others. Please note that you don't confuse this with Queen Anne's Lace, a common gardener's choice and completely harmless. You can tell the difference because hemlock is striped or dotted purple on the lower half of the stem and if you crush a leaf, it smells like rank and kinda gross. It has quite an interesting botanical name, linguistically speaking. Conium, derived from the deadly toxin coniine found throughout the plant, is from the Greek word konas, meaning intoxicated or whirl, which are symptoms of the poison. Hemlock is native to West Asia, Europe, and North Africa, but has since spread to North America, Australia, and New Zealand.
Tumblr media
It often grows near surface waters, such as streams and ditches, as well as on waste areas, on roadsides, and on the edges of cultivated fields. In some places, it is considered invasive. Btw, hemlock, the poisonous shrub, is NOT related to hemlock tree, member of the pine family, which isn't poisonous, it's just called that because they smell similar when crushed.
Hemlock contains conhydrine, N-methylconine, but its most poisonous alkaloid is coniine, which has a chemical structure similar to nicotine. This poison disrupts the central nervous system—a small dose can cause respiratory collapse. In practice, it eventually stops your ability to breathe, causing you to suffocate. This won’t happen right off, and drinking its tea only makes you feel drunk at first. It may take from 48 to 72 hours for the full toxic effects to manifest.
According to Christian mythology, the hemlock plant became poisonous after growing on the hillside of Jesus’ crucifixion. When his blood touched the plant, it turned forever toxic.
Ooh! ooh! Fun fact- Hemlock is in the same family as carrots!

THIS IS WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
Tumblr media
The following is an unabridged version of the article entitled “My Travels With A Hula Legend” that was written by Mr. Nathan Nāpōkā and published in Wailea Magazine Spring/Summer 2016.
OVERVIEW
Traditional hula traces its beginnings to Hawai‘i’s mythic past. Many traditions say that the gods were the first hula performers. These gods provided the inspiration for mankind who in turn created an earthly tradition of dance. In pre western times hula followed a strict religious protocol. Practitioners worshipped at an altar with elaborate rituals. They venerated the deity of the hula, Laka, who could be both male and female in nature. Chiefs usually kept their own circle of chanters and dancers whose job it was to honor the gods and in turn celebrate their chiefly patrons.
Today’s hula students can choose to learn a wide variety of hula types. Modern dances performed with music and vocals are often called “‘auana”. The more classical dances are called “kahiko” which literally means old or ancient. These kahiko dances are often accompanied by a gourd or sharkskin drum. All forms of hula, old or new, are performed with words either sung or chanted. Hula does not exist without a poetic text. So the dancer is actually an extension of the poetry, embellishing those words with the visual impact of interpretive movement.
Over the past forty years there has been a worldwide explosion of interest in hula. Most people are content with sitting back and watching, while others cultivate a deeper interest in hula by becoming students of the dance. These students usually join a hālau, or hula school. These schools are sprouting up all over the world. In Japan alone, according to a recent estimate, there are 400,000 students of the hula.
KEAHI-THE FIRE
Shortly after the arrival of Christian missionaries in 1819, hula was denounced as an evil remnant of Hawai‘i’s pagan past. With the conversion of a majority of Hawaiians to Christianity, hula went into decline. During the reign of King Kalākaua (1874-1891) hula performances were once again encouraged and hula experienced a comeback. Kalākaua’s wife, Queen Kapi‘olani travelled throughout the Kingdom encouraging her people to propagate a healthy generation of Hawaiians. On a trip to Kaua‘i in 1885, Queen Kapi‘olani saw a promising young dancer and Kapi‘olani recommended that this girl, Keahi-nuiokaluaoPele (The Great Fire in the Pit of Pele), be brought to Honolulu to live with her older sister, Kaleihulumamo, who had already settled there earning a name for herself as an accomplished dancer. Keahi moved to Honolulu at the age of eight and throughout her youth she travelled between Kaua‘i and O‘ahu learning from the greatest hula teachers of her time. She eventually married and settled in Honolulu, where she taught traditional hula and chant. As the twentieth century unfolded, she emerged as one of the most respected Hawaiian cultural authorities of the time.
‘IOLANI LUAHINE
As Keahi aged she realized that it was important for her to pass on her priceless knowledge of the hula to the next generation. She looked within her family for a pupil that she could train. Knowing that her nephew Manase and his wife Besse just had a child on January 31, 1915, she asked them if she could have this newly born daughter, Harriet Lanihau Makekau. After giving the proposal some thought Manase announced that Harriet would go to his Aunt Keahi to be trained in the traditional hula, his family’s legacy. At three months old Harriet was taken from Napo‘opo‘o, Hawai‘i Island to Honolulu where she was given in Hawaiian fashion to her grandaunt, Keahi, who became her hānai mother from that day forth.
When Harriet arrived in Honolulu, Keahi noticed that the baby’s eyes were filled with mucous. No matter how much they wiped and cleaned the problem persisted. Keahi was worried and she summoned a kahuna to her home. The priestess sat and observed the baby and then asked for her name. When they told her that her name was Harriet Lanihau, the kahuna paused briefly then said, “That name is not right. She should be called ‘Iolani Luahine.” From that moment, her name was changed and her mucous filled eyes gradually cleared. She was now ‘Iolani, the soaring hawk of the heavens.
‘IOLANI’S CHILDHOOD
‘Iolani was exposed to hula from infancy but did not start formal training with Keahi until the age of four. She was taught all aspects of the dance. Her training was nonstop. Sometimes Keahi would invite a hula teacher to the house to spend time with ‘Iolani, exposing her to their style of hula. Keahi wanted her to experience the best teachers of the time in the same manner as Keahi was trained thirty five years earlier. When she was old enough to attend school, ‘Iolani was enrolled at St Andrew’s Priory. She attended school during the weekdays and most of her other time was spent with Keahi. Keahi filled ‘Iolani with her knowledge of traditional hula. ‘Iolani was a bright and free spirited child. Even at a young age she was extremely charismatic and anyone who saw her dance knew that she was destined for greatness.
THE LEGEND EMERGES
After graduating from high school, ‘Iolani worked at various jobs. She eventually ended up at the University of Hawai‘i where she studied to become a social worker. While at the University her life was forever changed when in 1937 her beloved hānai, Keahi, passed away. ‘Iolani was devastated. She was only 22. She left school and worked as a telephone operator during the day and she started dancing in Waikīkī at night. She loved entertaining and enjoyed performing. She was extremely successful. Wherever she performed people flocked to see her. She developed quite a following. There was something very unique about her style of dancing almost as if all of her ancestors including Keahi were supporting her on stage.
As much as ‘Iolani loved the excitement of Waikīkī she always felt the need to pass on her knowledge of the traditional hula to the next generation. In 1947, she opened a hula school. By this time her eldest sister’s daughter, Helen Hoakalei Messer, was living with her and Hoakalei helped with the running of the hālau. ‘Iolani was especially happy to have a niece that she could train in hula.
In the early 1950’s, ‘Io fell in love with a Honolulu artist, John MacMahon. They got married and moved to ‘Iolani’s birthplace, Napo‘opo‘o on Hawai‘i Island. The marriage was short lived. ‘Iolani realized that she missed dancing, her real passion in life. She also became aware that hula was also an important source of income. Her birth mother, Besse, later explained to her that because of her sacred dedication to hula, she was kapu and should not have considered marriage. ‘Iolani returned to Honolulu alone and continued dancing. In 1961 she moved to the Royal Mausoleum in Nu‘uanu, where she worked as curator for the next four years.
By this time the world had taken notice of ‘Iolani. The great American modern dancer, Ted Shawn, saw ‘Iolani perform on one of his visits to Hawai‘i. He said: “She is an artist of world stature. Her knowledge of the old and almost lost repertory of the Hawaiian dance is probably unmatched; her technical ability to perform and project these dances is of the highest order.” She was invited to perform three times at the National Folk Festival in Washington D.C.. The State of Hawai‘i presented her with the Order of Distinction for her contribution in the arts. She was now recognized as one of Hawai‘i’s greatest treasures.
RETURN TO HAWAI‘I ISLAND
In the mid 1960’s ‘Iolani decided to move back to her birthplace in Napo‘opo‘o, Hawai‘i Island. She worked as curator for Hulihe‘e Palace in Kailua Kona and spent her time living between a cottage on the Palace grounds and her family home in Napo‘opo‘o. Her dream was to eventually have a school in Napo‘opo‘o where she could teach traditional hula and chant. Like Queen Kapi‘olani’s support for her hānai, Keahi, many years earlier, ‘Iolani also drew the attention of a royal patron, Princess Abigail Kekaulike Kawānanakoa, the great grandniece of Queen Kapi‘olani, who supported ‘Iolani by building her a new facility in Napo‘opo‘o, where ‘Iolani could open a traditional hula school.
As she approached 60, ‘Io realized that the hula was going through significant changes. For the sake of continuity, she wanted the next generation to see the traditional dances as she learned them. Soon a plan was devised by Alfred Preis, who was the executive director for the State Foundation for Culture and the Arts. Preis believed in ‘Iolani’s artistic genius and wanted to do all within his power to support her desires as an artist. Preis was responsible for establishing a program with the State Department of Education called the Artist in the Schools Program. It was through this program that Preis found a way for ‘Iolani to fulfill her dream of sharing her legacy with the next generation of Hawai‘i’s school children.
ARTIST IN THE SCHOOLS
‘Io’s niece, Hoakalei called me in 1975 and asked if I was interested in travelling with her and her Aunt ‘Iolani , across Hawai‘i presenting a program of traditional hulas to the next generation. Aunty Hoakalei was my teacher and I was teaching her male hula classes at that time. I found out later that it was ‘Iolani who asked Hoakalei to approach me. They needed a narrator, male dancer and a person who could handle the logistics of the tour. I met Aunty ‘Iolani a few years earlier but this would be my first opportunity to spend time with her. I said “Of course” and shortly thereafter Hoakalei and I flew to Kona to work on the program with ‘Iolani.
Aunty ‘Io was 60, at the time, but she danced with the agility and strength of someone years younger. At the end of a week of rehearsals my legs were trembling with exhaustion. ‘Io asked me how I was doing. She could see that I was tired. I said alright and she said “Good, because you have only begun to learn these dances…we have a long way to go.”
When in Kona, I slept on the pūne’e on Aunty ‘Io’s porch at Hulihe‘e Palace while she and Hoakalei shared her bed inside the cottage. On the last day of rehearsals everyone retired very early after a poi supper. Somewhere in the dead of the night, ‘Io started chanting next to me on the porch. Aunty Hoakalei came out of the house and sat beside me on the pūne’e. We were told that we were going to see Tutu Pele. No questions asked, I grabbed my blanket and jumped in the backseat of the car while Hoakalei got the car keys and with Aunty ‘Io as co-pilot we made the long journey to Halema‘uma‘u Crater. Upon arriving at the crater we locked the car and followed the path to the crater rim. All was still. Aunty ‘Io made an offering to Pele and as she chanted her prayer, a massive fountain of lava gushed up from the floor of Halema’uma’u. I was scared. We were so close to the edge and I didn’t want anyone to get hurt. Aunty ‘Io started dancing and Hoakalei supported her with a chant. With Tutu’s acceptance of our offering the path was clear for our work to begin.
HAWAI‘I’S KEIKI
I heard a loud ”Hui…Nāpōkā”. It was Aunty ‘Io on the other side of the chain link fence that separated my dilapidated plantation cottage from the Bank of Hawai‘i parking lot. I grabbed my bags and paddle and climbed the step ladder over the fence and landed at the back of Hoakalei’s station wagon. We loaded up and were on our way to our first school program. Aunty ‘Io was dressed in a tan London Fog trench coat with a purple felt hat. She ran through a quick checklist with us as I settled into the car. No matter how set our program was, we all knew that the lineup could change in a minute, depending on Aunty ‘Io’s spirit.
All three of us were visually challenged to some extent so when the final moment came to start the program and we removed our glasses we had to be ready to go with the flow. Many times we were expecting a certain hula and ‘Io would call out a completely different dance that I would have to give an introduction for and Hoakalei would have to be ready to chant. That was ‘Io. You had to always be prepared for the unexpected. She especially loved dancing for the elementary children and they adored ‘Iolani. We were warned that their attention spans would be short but this was never a problem when ‘Iolani danced.
TRAVELLING WITH ‘IOLANI
For the next two years we visited all the islands except for Ni‘ihau and Kaho‘olawe. We usually did an evening concert at some point so that the community at large could see ‘Iolani. Aunty ‘Io always had me checking on ticket prices. She wanted to be sure that our kama’āina could afford to come. Prices were always reasonable.
On Maui we performed at the school in Ke‘anae and Hāna and while in Hāna we planned a concert for the community at Helene Hall down at the Harbor. We were staying at the teacher’s cottages at the old high school and we made sure to mix the poi and prepare a meal before leaving for the hall. Hāna did not have restaurants that would be open in the late evening.
So many elderly Hawaiian faces filled the hall that evening, overflowing onto the lānai. They wouldn’t let ‘Io leave the stage. She was in her element. As one of her hana hou encores she unscrewed the long push mop handles backstage and throwing one to me we did a battle spear dance for Ka‘uiki Hill which rose just outside the stage door. She changed from a nimble cat like persona to a fierce warrior in a matter of seconds. She made it a point to tell me not to baby her in the dance. At the end of the dance my knuckles were bleeding and she brought the audience to their feet. Over a bowl of poi later in the evening, she explained that there was a point in time when very few men were interested in dancing. During that time some women carried some of the male dances to the next generation. She said, “When you have to be a man you just let it happen.”
Midway through the tour, ‘Iolani suffered some serious medical setbacks. We paused and waited for her to recover from a surgery that temporarily hampered the movement on one side of her body. She was determined to gain her full motion back and using her hula implements. She danced until she completely regained control of her limbs.
We spent time on Lāna‘i and then moved on to Moloka‘i where ‘Iolani’s sister, Dorothy Kahinu lived on Hawaiian Homestead land at Ho‘olehua. Before leaving the island we took all our leis to Kanakaloloa Cemetery near her sister’s home where ‘Iolani’s parents were buried. I stayed near the car while ‘Iolani and Hoakalei had a tearful graveside visit.
‘Iolani’s health was unstable but she was determined to finish what she had started and over the next year we travelled to O‘ahu and Hawai‘i Island. We ended our tour on Kaua‘i. After making all of our appearances at the schools, we did an evening concert and planned to return to O‘ahu the next day. Early the next morning ‘Iolani wanted to go to Hā’ena to visit the hula heiau at Kē‘ē. We made a call to her friend, Imua, and set out for Hā’ena. We stopped in Hanalei for Imua and an offering, then made our way to the end of the road. It was a windy stormy day and a high surf was wildly pounding at the reef in Hā’ena. We were all fully dressed to get on the airplane and Aunty ‘Io motioned for me to get our seaweed leis from the car. She went down to the small inlet and started chanting. The booming north shore waves suddenly went still and we traced our steps along the reef, out into the ocean.
She gently laid our leis on the surface of the ocean and explained once again that the reason we used limu kala was because kala meant to forgive in Hawaiian. Wearing this lei meant that all was forgiven and thus at peace so that the creativity that was hula could occur. We turned back to the shore and as we reached the sand, the ocean waves rumbled in taking the lei offerings out into the depths. We started the climb to the heiau at Kē‘ē and it quickly became clear why she called Imua. His six foot muscular build came in handy when ‘Io could no longer climb. Halfway up, Imua cradled her in his arms and made the rest of the trek carrying ‘Iolani who was chanting all along the way. She called to the stone guardians along the path, announcing our arrival. At the top, Imua gently placed ‘Io on the grassy platform and she thanked him with a kiss. ‘Io brought out her offering and poured a small amount in a cup for each of us to drink. She then flicked the rest of the offering into the air and onto the altar so that the essence went to the gods. She explained why we were there and acknowledged the next generations that were with her. Tears streamed down her face as she said goodbye for what she knew was her last time. She danced one last dance and turned to the trail and made a slow retreat to the car. ‘Iolani died later that year on December 10, 1978 leaving her rich legacy of dance for all.

With the winter holidays coming up/over, what are some fun rituals you ocs have? Like do they have movies that they watch every year, do they host partys or go to them, do they wear matching cloths or make fun of the people who do ect.
Hmm, oh so many OCs lol :)
I feel like Proffy would be more of a quite gift exchange, where they both say they won’t get the other something but then they always do :)
Evy would probably enjoy decorating the TARDIS if she had the notion that Christmas was coming at a normal time and not whenever they pop down :)
Angel, of course, they have the dance to the Christmas song and some mistletoe kisses ;)
Mac, I think would force the Doctor to set down on Earth because ‘something ALWAYS happens at Christmas’ and it just sort of becomes their thing to spend Christmas on Earth :)
The Judge, would be a sort of bittersweet tradition, because their children are gone and it’s a reminder of all they lost, so it would be more of a ‘let’s go out and do something for someone else, save a planet, be Father (and Mother) Christmas for someone in need :)
Sadie would probably be the sort to want to make Christmas Cookies with the Doctor and gingerbread houses and slap his hand away each time he tries to sneak a bite ;)
Sigma would have the tradition of getting something to distract the Doctor so she could wrap every single item in his room with wrapping paper, and I mean EVERYTHING in his room, like his socks all individually wrapped and his toothbrush wrapped and just be grinning off to the side :)
Michelle would work on sketches for Sam and Dean every year and Dean would pretend it’s just another gift but he keeps them all in the glovebox of the Impala and Sam keeps them in his wallet until they can’t fit anymore :)
Leena and Sherlock, when they’re not entertaining or with other people, she will literally force him into the ugliest Christmas Sweaters she can find, as an ‘experiment’ for him to gauge whether their appeal to each other diminishes depending on their clothing ;)
Marayna, since they wouldn’t have Christmas the way we see it, probably more Yule, I think she would drag Arthur to a Druid celebration of it, to really show their ties to Camelot and his acceptance of magic, to show him more of the nature of things and to show him her own duties as High Priestess :)
Piper, I feel like her and Snow would have HAD to do something with the first snowfall, like have a snowball fight and it HAS to be the FIRST snowfall. Her and August, would probably watch movies all day and sip hot chocolate with cinnamon. And her and Gold would have probably had a tradition, since it would remind him of losing his son, to pretend the holidays didn’t exist, but would still ‘exchange’ a gift for ‘no reason’ :)
Lyssa and Regina would gather by the fire place and share a small feast after Snow and Leopold went to sleep for the night, giving little gifts to each other as a private celebration :) Lyssa and Hook wouldn’t have been together long enough to have a tradition, but I could see them going out on his ship and just looking up at the stars, sharing a blanket because ‘it’s cold’ out :)
Claire and Sheldon have the tradition of her giving him a handmade ‘comic book’ while he gives her a card that summarizes them for that year.
Cora doesn’t have Christmas on her planet or any Holidays that the Mas’heirs would allow her to partake in, and I don’t think Spock would subscribe to holidays like that so they more just go about their day but are both very sure to wish happiness to the crew as they do :)
Victoria would spend holidays with her father, I could see them both dumping a box of odds and ends on the floor and using whatevers in it to make a Christmas Tree or ornaments out of it, I think she’d continue that tradition with Kirk only she’d probably try to murder him with half the items before they finish lol ;)
Kona, for the holidays, I could see Loki gifting her a new book with raised letters so she can read it, and her reading it to him as their tradition.
Athena and her family would have a very grim tradition of the holidays, it would be a time for them to remember the Dark Days, while everyone else is happy and celebrating family, it would be a reminder of what they tried to take from the humans, it would be a consideration of how far from those feelings they had gone, and a promise to continue into the new years being better than they were before :( With Thor, I think he would respect her need for seclusion during those times, but he would sit outside her door, waiting till she was ready to emerge, and want to be the first thing she saw, so he could remind her of how far she’s come :’)
Amira, I don’t think the Jedi had holidays like that? So I’m not sure she’d have an actual tradition for it. But I could see her researching her home planet, even though she’s never been there, and finding their largest holiday and finding something small that she could do, just to honor where she came from and how it allowed her to become the Jedi she is. Anakin would have no fond memories of his home planet, and so I could see him, the more he gets close to Amira, replicating her tradition to show her how important she is to him.
Menna, I see her tradition being not dressing as a queen but in her normal clothing, going out among the people, and making sure those in need were able to get what they need for their families. Aragorn would go with her because they are his people and maybe if Menna saw them greeting him, in his every day clothing, as ‘King Aragorn’ she’d finally ‘believe’ he was king. She never would ;)
Olivia would spend holidays with the Carters, her and Peggy exchanging books about adventures and then making plans for all they’d do the next year. She would still do so when Peggy is older, bring her a book and read it to her for the holidays. With Steve, they would go to Church, I think, and then volunteer at a shelter or a food bank, they would fill the whole day with helping other people and then, when they get home, there’s mistletoe in the doorway and they’d put on lovely music and just have a sweet moment together to be thankful they still had each other :’)

Rescue Mission Success!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Around 3am this morning, Imperial cars pulled up to the docks in Evergreen Harbor, and unloaded HIM Tsarina Ekaterina, Queen Misha, and Misha's niece, Princess Malie of Sulani. The trio lined up on the presentation deck before the sun had even risen, to watch the SS Britechester pull into harbor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The SS Britechester is the official ship of HIH Crown Princess Ophelia's secret mission troops, the Britechester Brigade, who were sent off on an unknown mission early last week- unknown until today, that is.
Tumblr media
Now that the Brigade has returned successfully, mission details have been released: apparently the troops were sent in to rescue Chief Lilah, Queen Mother Kona, and Princess Allinah Mahoe from occupation in the Sulani Islands. The Imperial War Council deemed their allies in Sulani the most at risk from retaliation from Windenburg, and swooped in undercover and in the middle of the night to rescue them from their house arrest imposed by the Emperor's daughter, Crown Princess Martha.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only was the Sulani Royal Family rescued successfully, but there was no loss of life amongst the members of the Britechester Brigade- a welcome relief to our own Imperial family who has many members amongst their ranks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was an emotional reunion for the Chief and her eldest daughter, Princess Malie, who has been estranged from her mother since the war started. Princess Malie was attending Ivanov Royal Academy in Glimmerbrooke when Sulani was seized by Emperor Victor. The Chief was still under occupation when Princess Malie graduated from the Academy, and when she subsequently started university in Britechester. It's been over a year since Mother and Daughter have seen each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tsarina Ekaterina has designated Cobblemore Cottage, a large manor house owned by the crown in the town square of Henford, as the headquarters for the Sulani Government in exile. Once all reunions had taken place, and HIM congratulated the Britechester Officers, the Sulani Royal family was loaded into the Imperial cars, and began their drive North to Henford-on-Bagley.

This is, all my favorite jewelry that was given to me.
Anyone who knows me has probably noticed that I wear the same jewelry all the time. A sea star silver necklace, a silver tiffany’s ring on my right ring finger, and a watch or hair tie on my left wrist. The necklace reminds me of a specific Hawaii trip, the ring was a gift and I wear to remind myself that love does indeed exist, the object on my left wrist is to remind myself that no matter how low I feel I will never try again. But thats not what this post is about......
I’m still in the process of unpacking/buying furniture for my apartment. I finally got a desk and I was unpacking my jewelry box to put on my desk and I was looking at all these pieces and how they each had a story. So I felt like sharing.
Going from left to right:
The tiny diamond, was given to me dad at my sweet 16. When he gave it to me he told me he wanted to give me my first diamond, because he was going to love me always. It’s bent because at the time I had an awful boyfriend and he stepped on it. The chain isn’t the original chain, also thanks to the awful ex. But that diamond was my first and its precious to me.
The Pearl: is also from my dad actually. I had just graduated HS and my family took a trip to Kona. I got to open a clam on the ocean and thats the pearl that was inside the clam. I remember my brother thought it was the coolest thing ever. So that necklace reminds me of both of them.
The Key Ring: Is from an ex, it says “my queen” in it. They had it custom made to match my tattoo and I love it so much. The ironic/heartbreaking part is, it was given to me after we had broken up. Giving it to me was probably one of the more selfless acts of love I’ve ever witnessed. I know it hurt them to give it to me and I honestly love everything it represents, even if we don’t talk anymore. Unfortunately I cant wear it, not because of who gave it to me, but becasue its to heavy.  I tried to briefly after I got it, but it hurt my hand to wear, I actually had a bruise from it which sucks because it is such a unique ring! In short you can tell my ex knew me well, cause they designed something I’m completely in love with.
The red/white opal ring: Is from my grandma. She’s losing her mind and doesn’t remember me. It kills my mom every time we visit. She had called me Lisa (which is my mothers name} the day she gave me this ring. She was talking to me like I was my mom, then handed me the ring. She whispered to me “keep it safe.” I still havent told my mom she gave it to me. I dont know how, it’s also a ring I cant wear. This one also hurts emotionally to wear, but I love it anyway.
The King Solomon Stone: Is from Israel. A friend of mine said he saw it and thought of me instantly. He was visiting Tel-aviv and made a side trip to Jerusalem. The stone is from the border “I got you something from the holy city.”
The Cheshire Cat bracelet: is from Oxford. Same friend as above was in Oxford doing a study abroad intensive. At the time i was taking my 2nd English Literature class while toying with the idea of changing majors from Bio to English. Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in wonderland at Oxford university. The Cheshire cat is one of my favorite character in all of literature so the bracelet is perfect.
The Ruby Cross: Is from Mexico. Its blessed and was given to me at my Conformation. I am not religious, I don’t really believe in any kind of higher being, but I was raised Catholic. My Nina gave me the necklace after the church service. She said that on her last trip to Mexico city she had bought that necklace and some priest at one of the cathedrals blessed it. She said when I asked her to be my Nina she knew it was for me. Even though I am no longer religious I feel very attached to that necklace. Ill probably never wear it again, but its beautiful and means so much to me.
All of these pieces were given to me with love. When I look at them my heart is happy.

Remnants Ch 5
I thought I’d go ahead and post writing here for my readers who don’t follow me on twitter or receive ff.net updates. So, in honor of @evilcharmingweek, here is my day-late contribution--an update to Remnants. I went ahead and added the drabletto I posted in this verse some months back, as well, since it is vital to the timeline. The drabbletto is posted on ff.net as Ch 4, this update as Ch 5.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank those of you who’ve sent such lovely messages my way over the past few days. They mean so much and have put a huge smile on my face, even in the midst of a difficult weekend. So again--thank you! You bless my life in more ways than you know.
And as always, I wish everyone of you a wonderful week.
She starts, her eyes blinking haphazardly as she props herself up on her elbows and gazes around the bedroom.
There it is again. Someone is pounding on her front door.
David snorts in his sleep beside her, and she puts on her glasses so she can see the clock. Eight twenty-eight a.m. Shit. They overslept.
Regina slides out of bed and grabs her robe, tying it around herself securely as she hurriedly makes her way down the steps. The last thing she needs is for Nadia to wake up and start howling again--they’d had a rough enough night with her as it is. An eleven month old with an ear infection isn’t exactly a recipe for a good night’s sleep, and she’d had a hard time resting at all, even after David took a shift with the baby so she could try to get some shut-eye.
The floor is cold under her bare feet, and she reaches the door and looks out the peephole, cursing under her breath when she sees exactly who’s standing on her front porch.
It’s Emma. And she does not look pleased.
Regina breathes in and unlocks the door, attempting to steel herself against whatever might be coming her way.
“Is he here?”
Regina blinks, tossing Emma what she hopes is a withering look.
“You’re out and about early today.”
“That’s because I was supposed to meet Dad at Granny’s almost half an hour ago,” Emma returns. “I’ve tried calling him, but he’s not answering his home or cell phone or his texts.”
“He’s probably still asleep.”
“Don’t bullshit me, Regina,” Emma cuts in. “You know I can always tell when you’re lying.”
The women stare at each other as cool air rushes under Regina’s robe, making her shiver as she crosses her arms over her breasts.
“Is he here? With you?”
Regina swallows, inhaling sharply before a sound behind her takes her off guard.
“Yes,” David answers, moving down the stairs to stand directly behind her. “I’m here.”
Heat floods her face as his presence warms her body, and an arm slides protectively around her middle, leaving Emma with no doubt as to the current state of their relationship. She leans into him slightly, greedily taking the support he so freely offers before opening the door a bit further and gesturing towards her fourier.
“You’d better come in before you wake the whole neighborhood,” Regina says, and Emma closes her mouth, moving past both of them, bringing the cold inside with her. Regina’s stomach drops to her knees, but a soft kiss whispered across her temple allows her to take a deep breath.
“It’s alright,” David breathes, and she nods, even though her mind and emotions fear that nothing may be alright ever again. Emma turns and stares at the pair of them, her face moving through a myriad of emotions before she clears her throat and puts her hands on her hips.
“Were you ever planning on telling me? About...this?”
Emma gestures towards their covered-up state of undress, Regina’s hastily knotted silk robe, David’s shirtless, pajama-pants only attire, prompting Regina to tug the corner of her robe a little closer to her neck. David sighs into her shoulder before moving out from behind her and taking her right hand within his, leaving her back feeling uncomfortably exposed.
“Of course we were,” he answers. “When we felt the time was right.”
Emma’s mouth drops open again, her eyes rounding in two seconds.
“When was that going to be? After the two of you moved in together? Maybe had another kid or two?”
“Shhh,” Regina says, pointing towards the staircase. “The children are still asleep.”
Emma breathes in as if she’s about to say something, then stops herself, dropping her hands to her side in frustration.
“Maybe we should take this into the kitchen,” David suggests, doing his best to keep the situation as calm as possible. “I’ll make everyone some coffee, and we can talk.” The look he gives his daughter is pointed, the squeeze to Regina’s hand meant to be reassuring.
Emma stares directly into her before nodding and following her father into the other room. A wail from upstairs captures Regina’s attention, and she rubs her free hand over her scalp, silently counting the seconds until Nadia cries out again. She motions for David to go on into the kitchen before heading back upstairs, her hopes that Nadia will just go back to sleep as rudely interrupted as her own morning lie-in. She steps into the nursery and picks up her red-faced, unhappy baby, cradling the child to her chest, kissing dark, matted hair before laying her down to change her swollen diaper.
She kisses Nadia, now sporting a dry footed sleeper and smelling of baby lotion as they make their way back downstairs. Regina’s heart hammers loudly into the kitchen’s weighted silence, and she glances at David before returning her gaze to Emma, now standing by the counter with both arms crossed over her chest.
“We’re doing nothing wrong, you know.”
David’s words slide over her, the very reassurance he’d whispered over her nakedness in private now shared with the one person they both need in their corner.
“Then why in God’s name have you been sneaking around?” Emma fires back. “Acting like kids trying to grab a quick fuck behind their parent’s back?”
Regina’s eyes narrow.
“It’s not like that,” David states, laying a hand on Regina’s shoulder as Nadia begins to whimper into her mother’s robe. “At all. And Regina and I have every right to keep our relationship private until we see fit to bring it out into the open.”
“Of course you have that right,” Emma returns. “But don’t you think you could have let me know before all of Storybrooke figures it out? For God’s sake--I’m your daughter,” Emma continues before looking directly at her. “And your best friend.”
Regina swallows hard.
“It’s nothing personal,” she begins as she strokes Nadia’s hair and sways back and forth to sooth the girl. “But you of all people should understand the sort of talk we’ll be facing once we let the proverbial cat out of the bag. Prince Charming and The Evil Queen--come on. Do you think everybody is going to just accept us as a couple and wish us well?”
“People might just surprise you, Regina,” Emma says. “And I’m not just anyone. I’m family. So’s Henry.”
She draws in a sharp breath.
“Henry knows?” Regina questions, earning herself an eye-roll from Emma.
“Who do you think told me to look for Dad here?”
“Shit,” Regina mutters, wondering what in God’s name she’s going to say to her son when she next sees him. “I wondered if he suspected, but…”
“Our son isn’t stupid,” Emma fires back. “And he’s not upset about....this...either, just so you know.”
David gazes back at Regina and gives her a soft smile, the sort he offers her when she confesses her fears to him while lying naked in his arms.
“So he’s okay with us?” Regina asks. “Me and David?”
“He was really matter-of-fact about the fact that Dad had more than likely spent the night here last night,” Emma returns. “Like it’s just part of his life now.” She pauses to take a deep breath as the coffee maker sputters out its final drops of Kona Roast. “He wants both of you to be happy--shit, we all do. Losing Mom like we did…and Robin...”
Nadia starts to cry and reaches out towards David who takes her in his arms as if she belongs there. The baby rubs her right ear before settling into his chest as he strokes her back and kisses her dark hair, sniffing back tears Regina knows are pressing hard to get out.
“I’ll always love your mother,” David manages, his tone fractured and low. “Always. You know that, Emma. But I’ve come to love Regina, too.”
The silence is overwhelming, making Regina wish that she still had Nadia in her arms as a distraction. It’s out there now, the fact that they love each other, the fact that they’ve chosen to move forward after losing their perspective soul-mates to circumstances beyond their control.
“Wow,” Emma breathes, running a hand through her hair. “So this is serious, then. Not just a rebound thing?”
David looks over at Regina, the tenderness in his gaze washing over her in waves.
“It’s serious,” Regina answers, earning herself that soft smile she now needs as much she needs air.
“And do you love my dad?”
The question hangs between her and Emma, daring her to share feelings she still considers private.
“I do,” Regina confesses, her bottom lip trembling at the sheen in David’s eyes. “I love him very much.”
Emma presses her lips together before blowing air out of her cheeks.
“Then I’m happy for you,” Emma says. “I truly am. God knows the two of you have been through hell and back over the past couple of years and deserve some happiness.”  She pauses to clear her throat. “But you need to talk to Henry. Now. He deserves to hear about this from you.”
Regina exhales and nods as a small set of feet make their way down the steps and into the kitchen. Neal walks straight over to her, raising his arms up in her direction, and she picks him up, snuggling into her chest as he sticks his thumb into his mouth. She strokes blonde hair sticking up every which way as she makes her way to a chair and sits down, looking back at Emma who is studying the four of them rather intently.
“Morning, buddy,” David mutters, walking over to stroke his son’s tousled head, balancing Nadia securely with his other arm.
“You all make quite the picture, you know,” Emma states, her expression oddly neutral. “Like an actual family.”
Regina’s heart flutters beneath Neal’s sleep-warmed forehead, and she realizes that if Henry were here, this new family of hers would feel complete. She’s put her heart out there again, damn it, knowing full-well what can happen when it’s entrusted to another human being. But blue eyes gaze into her from where he stands, promises made to her in private now on full display for his daughter and everyone else to see.
“This works for us,” David replies, taking a step towards Emma. “Being together like this--like the family we’ve become. It’s not what we expected and certainly not something we planned, but it’s good and healthy and...and right.” He pauses to look back at Regina, his gaze warming her in places nobody but he’s allowed to see. “And it would mean everything to us to have both your and Henry’s blessing.”
Emma stares at David before casting a glance over at Regina and Neal.
“Then you’ve got my blessing,” Emma says with a shrug, stepping into her dad’s embrace, careful not to squish Nadia in the process. Muscles relax around Regina’s ribcage, and she draws her first full breath since Emma showed up this morning as father and daughter hug.
“Mama,” Nadia babbles, effectively forcing Emma and David to separate and making them chuckle. Regina waves at her daughter from her seat, wincing as the baby whimpers and rubs her ear again before leaning back into David’s chest.
“Dada.”
The room freezes as Neal snuggles further into her breast, all air seemingly sucked out of it. Three adults look back and forth at each other, the weight of Nadia’s pronouncement hitting them all like a Mack truck in a head-on collision.
“Well,” Emma finally breathes out, placing her hands back on her hips. “If things between you weren’t already serious, they sure as hell would be now.”

There’s more to Hawaii than just beautiful beaches and Mai Tais, and these Hawaii books are the best way to prepare for your trip. The islands have a rich culture, multi-cultural people, and turbulent history including the overthrow of their monarchy and annexation by the USA in 1898.
I think it’s important to learn more about these seemingly paradise islands before you visit. As usual with my pre-travel , I focused on fictional books set in Hawaii rather than dry histories, and I learned a lot while enjoying engaging stories.
These historical and contemporary Hawaii novels and short stories are a mix of fascinating, tragic, and entertaining.
1) Shark Dialogues by Kiana Davenport
If you only read one book set in Hawaii, make it this one by Hawaiian writer Kiana Davenport. It's one of my favourite books ever!
Shark Dialogues is an epic, complex, multi-generational family saga that weaves the history of Hawaii with the story of powerful matriarch Pono and her four granddaughters. You’ll learn about the Polynesian ancestors, whaling industry, sugar plantations, different immigrant groups (Japanese, Chinese, Filipino), annexation by the US, leper colony, and the fight for sovereignty.
The language is luscious and poetic with magical realism elements that reminded me of Isabel Allende. The novel features Hawaiian myths and language (with a glossary) and some characters use Hawaiian Pidgin, so it feels very immersive and you can pick up some of the local language.
It’s set mostly on the Big Island but also features Oahu, Maui, and Molokai. It does awaken you to the impact of tourism on the islands, so while you may be left feeling guilty for visiting, I think it’s important to be aware of the reality.
Shark Dialogues is a tremendous book and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
2) Moloka'i by Alan Brennert
Moloka’i is one of the most popular books about Hawaii. This captivating novel tells the story of Rachel, a young Native Hawaiian girl who is sent to the leper colony on Molokai at the very end of the 19th century.
It’s fascinating to read what life was like in the Kalaupapa colony, both the horrors and how it became a strong and supportive community over the years as the residents embraced life in the face of death.
There’s information about traditional Hawaiian culture as well as a historical backdrop—the introduction of planes, World War II, and the changes to Honolulu after the war.
Although it’s fiction, it’s inspired by the real leper colony, which you can now visit and still houses a few elderly residents (voluntarily).
If you enjoy Moloka’i, don’t miss the new sequel, Daughter of Moloka’i, which follows Rachel’s daughter. Although it’s mostly set in California with a focus on the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII, it also features Honolulu and Maui.
3) This is Paradise: Stories by Kristiana Kahakauwila
This is a powerful, beautiful collection of short stories that depict the glories and struggles of contemporary Hawaiian life on Maui, Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island.
The stories are all very different with a wide range of characters, but common themes are identity, family, love, home, and death. The use of Pidgin in the dialogue immerses you in the culture.
I especially loved the first eponymous story which cleverly uses the voices of three groups of Hawaiian women (young surfers, hotel cleaners, professionals) in Waikiki, Honolulu to tell the story of a young tourist whose vacation takes a dark turn.
4) Island of Sweet Pies and Soldiers by Sara Ackerman
This Hawaii novel is an enjoyable, easy read, although the subject matter is serious. It’s set during World War II in a small town on the Big Island where most residents are of Japanese heritage. Soldiers set up a base nearby and some of the local women befriend them and their mascot lion (which is based on a real lion!).
One of the women’s husband has gone missing and another’s is sent to a Japanese internment camp. The women come together to get through the tough times and bake pies for the soldiers to earn extra money.
The story is partly told by 10-year-old Ella who knows what happened to her father but is too scared to tell.
I also enjoyed Ackerman’s latest novel, The Lieutenant’s Nurse, about a nurse who arrives in Honolulu just before the Pearl Harbour attack during WWII.
5) The Descendants by Kaui Hart Hemmings
The Descendants is set in contemporary Hawaii on Oahu and Kauai (Hanalei). It’s a moving novel about Matthew King, a descendant of Hawaiian royalty who struggles to deal with his two girls as his wife lays in a coma. At the same time he has to make a decision about selling the land he has inherited on Kauai.
I enjoyed the book and it covers some important issues in Hawaii as well as grief and forgiveness. It has also been made into a good movie starring George Clooney.
6) House of Many Gods by Kiana Davenport
If you enjoyed Shark Dialogues, I also recommend this novel by Kiana Davenport. House of Many Gods tells the story of a Hawaiian family on the impoverished Waianae Coast on Oahu from the 1960s to current day.
They have to deal with traumatised and injured war veterans, drugs, parents abandoning their kids, and limited opportunities. At first I found it bleak, but I soon became engaged by the story of Ana, who was abandoned by her mother but goes on to become a doctor.
As with Shark Dialogues, the writing is lyrical and the book is a fascinating insight into Hawaiian language, culture, traditions (especially during pregnancy and childbirth), and the wisdom of elders. Environmental justice is a major theme.
There’s also a short section set in Kauai that includes a helicopter ride over the island and is worth if you are planning to do that.
7) Honolulu by Alan Brennert
Honolulu is another engrossing historical novel set in Hawaii by Alan Brennert. It takes place in the early 20th century in pre-WWII Honolulu and focuses on the Asian immigrants who were brought to the island to work on sugar and pineapple plantations.
The main character is Jin, a young Korean girl who comes to Hawaii as a picture bride (like a mail-order bride) and is shocked to discover that her arranged marriage is to a poor and violent plantation worker.
The book follows the tragedies and triumphs of immigrant life and features some real-life characters such as Queen Liliʻuokalani and Duke Kahanamoku (a swimmer who popularised surfing).
8) The Last Aloha by Gaellen Quinn
I didn’t find this novel as well written as the ones above, but it is enjoyable and tells the important story of how Hawaii’s queen was dethroned.
It’s told through the eyes of Laura, a young American woman who moves from San Francisco to the islands to live with relatives after her father dies. Her uncle came from a missionary background but is now part of the wealthy elite making enormous amounts of money from the sugar industry. He and others plot to overthrow the queen to protect their business interests.
Laura ends up working for the royal family and is close to them as they struggle to save their kingdom.
For a more authentic account of these events, you might want to read Hawai’i’s Story by Hawai’i’s Queen, which was written by the last monarch Queen Liliʻuokalani herself. I found the book rather dry and difficult to get through, though.
9) The Goddesses by Swan Huntley
If you are looking for an easy beach read set in Hawaii, try The Goddesses. Nancy, a 48-year-old American woman, moves to Kona on the Big Island with her teenage sons and husband as they try to rebuild their marriage after his infidelity.
Nancy becomes swept up in a dangerous friendship with her charismatic yoga teacher and things start going wrong. There are lovely descriptions of the island, but you won’t learn much about Hawaiian culture.
I hope you enjoy these Hawaii books and that they give you more insight into the islands’ unique culture and history.
If you are looking for a Hawaii travel guidebook, I recommend the detailed Hawaii Revealed series by local Andrew Doughty. We used the Maui and Kauai guides and there are also books on Oahu and the Big Island.

[T] Velleity [Soul/Maka]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ever since her mother left over two years ago, sixteen year old Maka Albarn has lived with her father stuck in an emotional limbo. Wrangled into a father-daughter day, Patchwork Art Museum, with its dark and morbid pieces, is an odd place for family bonding. As she roams aimlessly, a mysterious melody coming from the stock rooms captures her interest. Led to a strange white-haired boy who insists he has nothing to do with the music before hurrying away, her curiosity is cut short when the museum lights black out.
When they come back on, everyone else has vanished. After fruitless searching, seemingly supernatural presence leads Maka to a canvas of black paint. When she steps onto the painting, she is plunged into another world that strangely resembles one of the museum’s paintings.
In this world, however, Maka is not alone. Soul, the white-haired boy from the museum, is here: together, they hunt for a way back to reality. However, in a world where the art pieces have come to life and are out for blood, escaping will not be easy.

[M] Ghosts That We Knew [Soul/Maka, minor Tsubaki/Black Star, Liz/Death the Kid]
Tumblr media
Maka Albarn, vampire, can’t remember when she was a human, or the first hundred years of her vampire life. It isn’t until she meets Soul Evans, a human with an odd sense of familiarity and knowledge about Maka’s life that she realizes she might have known him once upon a time. As they grow closer, the mysteries behind Soul’s own life unravel, creating a rift between the two. When Maka’s memories return and she realizes her mistakes, she races to find Soul. But can they reconcile both past and present issues, and work toward a new life together?
Warnings: graphic depictions of violence, blood, gore, minor character death, Vampires, some sexual content, and mentions of past character death.

Man, I just noticed my Instagram has my blog on it so I better pick up the pace. Things are in full swing right now in preparation for Kona. Less than 16 weeks to the big dance and I’m gonna  make sure I look good in my tux. Since Ironman 70.3 Chattanooga I’ve been trying to wrap up projects and jobs at work and around the house to fully devote an adequate amount of time to Kona. I got everything I intended done and now I am in my second full week of race training. Right now that consists of 3 swims, 3 runs, and 3 bikes per week. I keep the weekday workouts brief and have tried to put a lot of focus on each workout having a purpose. Right now, I am doing mostly power sets in the pool, tempo/sprint sets for the run, and tempo work on the bike as well. The weekend is for long, boring stuff.
After Chattanooga I know the biggest factor for me is going to be nutrition and heat management in Hawaii. 88 in Tennessee is different than 90 and full sun on the Queen K Highway. In anticipation I met with Dr. Scott Black, the co-founder of Sword performance drink and endurance athlete. The good doc went over everything with me in order to measure my rate of depletion so I might stave off issues. Now I have to put his suggestions to practice. Wish me luck and let me know if any of you would like to ride or run with me. I’ll need the accountability! I assume my mother is the only person who reads this thing, so don’t worry, Mom, I don’t expect you to suit up.
