Royal Tiaras Highlights: The Strathmore Rose Tiara

The tiara was a gift to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon from her father, the Earl of Strathmore, for her 1923 wedding to the Duke of York, the future King George VI. The tiara features a garland of wild roses in diamonds mounted in silver and gold and was purchased for the future Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother at a London jeweler; it dates from the late nineteenth century.

The flowers in the tiara can be removed and worn as brooches and also be swapped-out for sapphires. The Queen Mother frequently wore the piece low on her head - as it was common in the 20s - but the piece does feature two separate frames, one that allows for a traditional wear.

Last time the tiara was seen was in 2012, when it was photographed for Hugh Roberts’ book ‘The Queen’s Diamonds’. The piece was inherited by Queen Elizabeth II so it’s still apart of the Royal Family’s collection.

At the state banquet of the President and First Lady of South Korea on Tuesday evening at Buckingham Palace, The Princess of Wales wore a Tiara that had not been seen in public for almost a century.

Princess Catherine wore the Strathmore Rose Tiara. This tiara was a wedding gift from the Queen Mother's father, the Earl of Strathmore, to his daughter when he married the Duke of York (who later became King George VI) in April 1923.

This tiara was last worn by the Queen Mother who was the Duchess of York in the 1930s. Since then, this tiara has become mysterious and has not been seen in public for almost a century. Until finally The Princess of Wales wore it recently 👑✨️

The Strathmore Rose Tiara, or Queen Elizabeth’s Strathmore Tiara, was a gift to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon from her father, the Earl of Strathmore, for her 1923 wedding to the Duke of York, the future King George VI. The tiara features a garland of wild roses in diamonds mounted in silver and gold and was purchased for the future Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother at a London jeweler; it dates from the late nineteenth century. The pavé-set diamond roses could be used as individual brooches, and – at least originally – could be swapped out for five single-collet sapphires, according to The Queen’s Diamonds

When a tiara disappears into the vault for so long, rumors and speculation tend to arise. In particular, there’s a rumor that the Strathmore Rose is in such poor condition or so fragile that it can’t be worn. I do not know the source of that suggestion and it may simply be speculation taken as fact; what we do know is that the tiara has been photographed alone a few times in recent decades and, obviously, the Queen has jewelers to fix things if that’s really what is needed or desired. (The Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara, for example, had its frame repaired multiple times during the Queen’s reign and was eventually remade in the 1980s.) Personally, I hope the Strathmore Rose Tiara will reappear someday – if for no other reason than to satisfy our curiosity.

I fully expect all of them to have been inherited by King Charles III because in the UK items passed from monarch to monarch are not subject to inheritance taxes. South Korean State Visit to the UK

There were some fantastic tiara moments in 2023: the Wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Princess Rajwa, the birthday celebrations of Prince Christian, but for me, the South Korean State Visit to the UK won! Queen Camilla wore the Burmese Ruby for the first time, which was the tiara that I was looking forward for her to wear the most. The Duchess of Gloucester wore the Gloucester Emerald Bandeau for the first time in years. The highlight of the evening, of course, was the Princess of Wales in the Strathmore Rose! It looked so good on her!!! The tiara was last worn by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother in 1935.
