Baking with the Wakandan Royals would include:
A/n: I've been watching a ton of baking shows lately so I've been mad inspired to write some domestic headcanons.
*I added Shuri
Tumblr media
T'Challa
If you mention to this man you're thinking about baking he's already checking for necessary ingredients quantities and locating the measuring cups
T'Challa's need for order and a systematic approach to life can either be really helpful when you're baking or really annoying
This man takes pride in prepping the pan
I mean oiled, floured, and lined with parchment
T'Challa didn't come to play. He got a cake stuck one time and he's never been the same
I'm tellin you he's a complete ace when it comes to measurements
This man will measure, level, sift, and whisk together the dry ingredients in less than 90 seconds
"Here you go, Love." handing you the bowl and kissing your temple
He even will have the separate little glass bowls in various sizes like he stepped out of his very own cooking show
T'Challa is definitely the clean as you go type
Boi is washing dishes almost as fast you can make them
I've got that, Sweetheart." snatching up dirty bowls and taking them to the sink like clockwork
You already kno he's a stick to the recipe type of guy
You kno better than to tell him "We can just eyeball it" or end any measurement/cook time with "or so"
He will absolutely lecture you on the acute chemistry of baking
After so many times of 'sneaking' in extra pinches of 'this' and 'that' and him catching you'll be forced to put him out to stop his constant meddling
"Challa, I swear to Bast if you say one more thing about the 'balance of baking' and don't get yo ass outta this damn kitchen, Shuri will be an only child!"
He occasionally peeks back in offering his two cents before you glare at him and he slinks back to whatever he's preoccupying himself with
Once everything out of the oven and cooled you can't help but smile and bring T'Challa a goodie for all his efforts and help even if he's kinda a pain
Tumblr media
Erik
He will 100% be minding his own business until he peeps you in the kitchen baking something
He immediately steps in to take over whether he knows what you're making or not
Deadass has slid across a counter, swiped the bowl, stuck the landing and been like "Ok Ma, what am I makin?"
Boi will even take your apron and do it smooth as hell too
The first time you thought he was trying to be freaky by grabbing ya ass and kissin all down ya neck in the kitchen but before you knew it the apron was untied and around his neck and he was stirring the bowl that was just in front of you
Growing up basically raising himself and being bounced around from relative to relative made learning to cook essential and he's a pretty damn good at it
And he knows it
Erik deadass cooks like somebody's Auntie
"Baby, lemme go ahead and do that." Is something you'll hear every step of the way
He'll just stare at the recipe for .5 seconds then be like "Do that shit, That shit right there and it'll be bland as hell!"
Erik starts off measuring but gradually shifts into eyeballing everything
He's prone to add pinches of different spices that are no where to be found in the recipe
Erik refuses to cook in silence and will always throw on one of his playlists
Y'all bop all the way from TLC to Daniel Caesar to Anderson. Paak
When all the baking is done Erik loves to humble brag about his baked treats
"Yea me and Bae, kilt that shit." Or "Oh you know, Babygirl can throw down"
That is until his cousin says something
T'Challa: "These are great."
Erik: "Damn Straight it is, T'Chump! Didn't kno my baby could FUCK it all da way up! Who you think taught her that! Who!"
Tumblr media
M'Baku
*nervous laughter*
M'Baku has an enormous sweet tooth but can't bake to save his life
Not that hasn't tried but most of those trails ended in flames
Since then the great gorrilla has been banned from most of the palace kitchens
Naturally when you ask "Baku, help me bake some cookies."
He's a little hesitant
M'Baku tries to explain to you that his strong suit is really savory and much rather do anything
He really hates that he's not naturally good at it like most things he does (fighting, leading, flirting, etc.)
This gets him out of helping the first few times before you drag him in kitchen promising "Trust me, I can teach you. It can't be that bad."
With M'Baku's help be prepared to remake batters at least twice
He's either heavy handed or extremely light handed there's absolutely no inbetween with him
He's gonna apologize each time he messes up no matter how many times you tell him it's fine
You put him on mixing duty but he gets bored so he starts distracting you
"Oh that look absolutely scrumptious, My Love." grabbing your ass as measure out brown sugar
"That tastes amazing, My Queen." giving you bedroom eyes as he sucks your finger clean of the batter you were about to taste
"You smell like heaven, Dear Heart." nipping at your neck as you place a pan in the oven
This is also the kinda man that eats as you bake
As soon as they hit the cooling racks he's bodying half of them
Putting up high doesn't work either when your mans is 6'5" and can reach all your hiding places
Only on rare occasions do you actually have sweets to show for you efforts if you only make one batch
3 seems to be the sweet spot since M'Baku eats half of 2
He actually does pay attention when you show him how to do things correctly and each time he makes fewer mistakes and he's so proud of himself
Tumblr media
Shuri
Shuri is allergic to anything remotely domestic. Not that its difficult she just isn't interested
Mysteriously she always has all the software updates to do when you ask "Wouldn't it be fun to help me bake something?"
"Yes, My King?!?!" Shuri yells running down the hall after a very confused T'Challa that tells back "Stop calling me that!" as the two run in the opposite direction as you
She's definitely not above making up tech tasks to get out of being forced into baking
"Oh I'd love to but I need to check... Erik's torso to make sure he's healing ok. Too bad he's shy so you can't come." She shrugs pulling Erik into lab before he can get in a word
Or "Oh yes Sergent Barnes, I do have time to look at the mechanics of each synapses of every nerve ending in your arm. This could take a while." practically tackling Bucky as he enters the lab
The only way to get her there is by treachery
"Shuri, come quick! The stan mixer is smoking you have to fix it. Or I'll never bake again." is enough to get her to bolt out of the door and into the kitchen
There's no way she can let your Double Fudge Sea Salt Pecan brownies vanish from her life
"This mixer is absolutely fine, Y/n. Don't scare me like that ev..." trailing off as she turns to see you locking the door to the kitchen
"Noooooooooooooooooooo!"
Once she finds that all exits are blocked off
Vents, windows, and personal secret passages she has installed for times like these
She starts offering 'helpful' advice to really 'expand' your baking horizions
"I'm telling you, Y/n, 1 and 1/4 teaspoons of white vinegar would really help these sweets raise to the ocassion." as she presses record and steps back
You soon learn after several batter explosions and looped videos and gifs sent across the Insta, Twitter, and Snap she can't be trusted
"Oh come on,now! How was I supposed to know it was going to do that?" Laughing as you glare at her wiping yet another batter blow up off your face
Before you accept her advice now it is questioned with "And if I add that it won't end up in my face?"
Shuri will pause then offer something else because she's no evil just mischievous
She pretends to be bored out of her mind the whole time even though she's mentally pocketing all the little steps so she can later try by herself
Every once in a while she'll hit you with an absolutely old school but completely clutch trick you've never heard of before (most likely something she picked up from cooking with Queen Mother) and you pause to look at her
Like "Where the hell did that come from?"
She just shrugs and offers some off the wall flavor combo to throw you off her trail
"Chocolate and peanut butter? Boring. How about anasis and chardonnay." genuinely curious about the combination
Shuri loves to experiment and play with structures and variables esspecially in the kitchen
So tell her your trying to make a souffle or flan and she's there automatically no plots involved or locked doors
Afters all the sweets and practical jokes are out of the oven and cooling and the doors are unlocked
Shuri takes a treat or two and hums looking satisfied with your team work "This was actually fun." mouth half full and gives you a quick hug before leaving
Ever so often she'll come of her own prompting to you wanting to be shown how to make a cookie or some other baked good
And you do but as soon as they're done
She steals like 75% of the goodies as you check some of the few left in the oven and splits them with M'Baku who was already waiting at the door and they run down the hall like small children
Always leaving a note "XOXO, Princess Shuri" and scribbled in the biggest calligraphy that is usually saved for royal documents "Thx from Great Gorrilla,M'Baku" at the scene of the crime

Flourless Chocolate Roll
Let’s just get one thing straight: it is going to crack. . You can hold your breath or have a tantrum or call upon the universe, but I’m telling you that no matter what you do, you need to accept the simple fact that it is going to crack…but you are not.
Instead you are going to stand proud knowing inside yourself that you have achieved not just simply flourless cake perfection, but chocolate cake perfection as well, because this is simply one of the best chocolate cakes I have ever tasted both in flavor and texture. And that is no small feat.
And there’s whipped cream and powdered sugar making it look like a rustic, tree-bark winter wonderland concoction, so who really cares anyway.
Guys, this is your Passover dessert. This is also your dessert if you don’t celebrate Passover but just want a knockout of a cake.
I wish, wish, wish I had not let the rolling part intimidate me for so many years because we’ve been missing out for far too long on this deliciousness.
Now let’s get down to the nitty gritty, step by step details.
As with most cakes that are flourless, you’re going to have to replace that leavening with another kind of leavening: beaten eggs. For this recipe it’s a two step process. You’re going to beat the yolks with sugar and salt till they’re light and creamy and you’re going to beat the whites and add them to the batter at the end to lighten everything up.
Once you’ve done all that, you’re going to scrape the chocolate-y batter into a jelly roll pan and bake for about 15-18 minutes.
As soon as it comes out of the oven, you’re going to cover it with a double layer of damp (not wet) paper towels—this will help keep moisture in the cake and make the eventual rolling part more successful.
It’ll also create an interesting geometric pattern.
Meanwhile, you can make the vanilla whipped cream (and swipe a taste or two—c’mon, we all know we’re going to do it anyway.)
Once the cake has entirely cooled, it gets a generous dusting of cocoa powder.
And then you slather on the whipped cream.
Now remember the cracking we talked about? It’s about to happen big time. Just breathe and use the wax paper that you top the cake with when you invert it from the pan after it’s cooled, to help you roll up the cake. And I give you permission to let loose a few naughty words too—actually, it’s part of the recipe.
But who cares about cracks because you are about to top the whole things with lots of powdered sugar and make it look gorgeous.
And besides, after one bite, no one is going to care! The cake is light, but at the same time intensely chocolate-y and the soft sweetness of the vanilla-enhanced whipped cream perfectly balances it out!
Who cares about a little cracking? We’re in heaven! Time to stop worrying and enjoy every creamy, chocolate spiral!
Not feeling the roll thing but still looking for something flourless to make? How about Chocolate Dipped Coconut Macaroons, Coconut Lime Macaroons, Black and White Coconut Macaroons, Chewy Double Chocolate Coconut Macaroons, No-Bake Chocolate Coconut Bites, Chocolate Swirled Meringues, Chocolate Almond Macaroons, Pistachio Lemon Macaroons, Passover Apple Cake, Fudgy Flourless Cupcakes with Vanilla Bean Créme Fraiche Frosting, Gale’s Coconut Chocolate Tartlets, Meringues with Walnuts and Chocolates, Can’t Believe These Are Gluten-Free Brownie Cookies, Queen Mother’s Cake, Chocolate Pavé, Chocolate Almond Matzo Brittle, Coconut Creme Caramel, Dark Chocolate Souffle Cake, Dark Chocolate Créme Brulée, Coffee-Caramel Custards and Coconut Macaroon and Lime Cheesecake?
Flourless Chocolate Roll
Makes 12 servings
Prep Time for cake: 15 minutes; Bake Time: 15-18 minutes; Prep Time for Filling: 5 minutes; Assembly Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients
For the cake
6 ounces good quality bittersweet chocolate, chopped (I used Lindt 70%)
3 tablespoons water
6 large eggs, separated, room temperature (separate when cold, then leave out to warm up)
2/3 cup sugar, divided
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon Dutch-process unsweetened cocoa powder
For the filling
1 cup heavy cream
3 tablespoons confectioners’ sugar, sifted
2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste or vanilla bean extract
Additional cocoa powder and confectioners’s sugar for topping the rolled cake (optional)
The Recipe
1. To make the cake: Preheat oven to 350ºf. Spray a 15x10x1 jelly roll pan with nonstick cooking spray and line the pan with a sheet of parchment paper that hangs over the edge of the pan by a couple of inches. Set aside.
2. Melt the chopped chocolate with the water in a small, heavy saucepan over very low heat, stirring often. Set aside to cool briefly.
3. Use an electric mixer to beat the egg yolks with 1/3 cup sugar and the salt for about 5 minutes until the mixture is thick and pale yellow. If you’re using a hand mixer, you will likely need to go to about 8 minutes. Remove the bowl from the mixer and use a rubber spatula to fold in the cooled chocolate, just until blended.
4. In a separate bowl, with clean beaters, beat the egg whites just until they hold soft peaks. Then gradually add the remaining 1/3 cup sugar and beat until the whites just hold stiff peaks. Fold 1/3 of the whites into the chocolate mixture to lighten it a bit and then fold in the rest of the whites gently but thoroughly. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, smooth the top so that it is spread out evenly and bake for 15-18 minutes, until the top is puffed and dry to the touch.
5. Transfer the pan to a wire rack and immediately cover the top of the cake with 2 layers of damp (not dripping wet, wring out the water) paper towels and let them sit for 5 minutes. Remove the towels and let the cake cool completely.
6. Sift the tablespoon of cocoa powder evenly across the top of the cake and overlap 2 layers of wax paper or parchment paper lengthwise over the cake. Place a large rimmed baking sheet over the paper and invert the cake onto it. Peel off the paper.
7. To make the filling: Beat the heavy cream with the vanilla until it just holds stiff peaks and spread it all across the top of the cake. Place a long platter near the cake to transfer after you roll it. Using the wax paper as an aid, roll up the cake as tightly as possible, starting with a long side. Carefully transfer the cake to the platter, sea, side down and remove the wax paper—don’t worry if it cracks a bit—it’s supposed to have that broken, tree-bark look. Dust the cake with more cocoa powder and confectioners’ sugar if you like.
8. You can definitely make this a day before and cover it loosely and store in the fridge.
Enjoy!
Note: Recipe adapted from Gourmet Magazine, 2001. I omitted the Grand Marnier and orange zest in the filling and swapped in vanilla bean paste instead.

Russian Imperial Afternoon Tea Workshop at Raffles Makati
This summer, tea lovers and aficionados can take their love for afternoon tea to the next level with the Russian Imperial Afternoon Tea Workshop at the Writers Bar. This is the third in their Royal Afternoon Tea series which previously featured themed sets from Queen Marie Antoinette of France and Queen Victoria of Great Britain. Now, its time to socialize with Russian aristocracy as Raffles Makati brings us another enchanting afternoon tea.
To make it more special, Raffles Makati has invited Ms. Sheryl Ebon, a certified Tea Sommelier and founder of a local tea brand Teavolution® Manila, for a series of workshops this summer at the Writers Bar. Participants can bask in a rich session covering tea history, art & ceremony, culture, and basic knowledge on how to make the perfect cup of tea. Afternoon Tea lovers are invited to join in from 3:30pm to 5:00pm on three special afternoons on February 28, March 28, and April 25, 2018 at only P2,650 for two persons. I wanted to broaden my knowledge about this exquisite past time so I attended their first workshop last week and went home with a new appreciation for this delicate ritual.
My first encounter with afternoon tea actually happened right here at the Writers Bar. Before, I thought that tea was just like any other beverage but it was not until I experienced the Afternoon Tea at Raffles that I began to appreciate the tradition and complexities woven into this classic ritual. The workshop was attended by a small group of participants which made the discussions casual and free-flowing. Ms. Sheryl opened with a short history of how tea began in China in 2737 B.C. and eventually traveled over to the rest of the world.
Joining us at the table was the always-elegant Monique Toda, Director of Communications at Raffles Makati. Afternoon tea is an elegant pre-evening tête-à-tête popularized in Europe with its own history and traditional ceremonies. Each country has developed their own tea rituals so it is really interesting to know how it blends into their cultures and traditions.
It was surprising to find out the different varieties of tea depending on how they are processed and that the tea bags we normally use are actually the lowest type. Teavolution Manila (www.teavolutionph.com) is one of the few retailers here that offers loose leaf and high quality teas so they know what they are talking about.
Ms. Sheryl then followed with the specificity of Russian tea tradition, while also giving us a taste of the world famous Russian Caravan black tea blend. The blend was inspired by the tea camel caravans traveling to Russia in the 19th century.
One peculiar Russian tradition is to put strawberry jam or any sweet item into the cup before pouring the tea. I have never seen this done before but I guess the Russians also have a sweet tooth like Filipinos do and like their tea sweet.
The Samovar is considered as an integral element of Russia's rich history. This is a heated metal container Russians traditionally use to heat and boil water. They usually drink tea throughout the day, especially with their cold weather, so every house has one of these.
We poured the Russian Black Caravan Tea over our cups and had a sip. The tea is quite strong but the sweet flavors of the strawberry jam made it a fruity and sweet blend.
To make it a complete Russian Afternoon Tea experience, a medley of sweet and savoury delicacies was also served to us on this three-tier tower, inspired by the era of Imperial Russia.
Starting February 1 until April 30, 2018, the Russian Imperial Afternoon Tea is served daily at the Writers Bar from 2:30pm to 5:30pm. This comes with your choice of tea from Raffles Makati’s finest selection of flavors courtesy of Master tea blenders Harney and Sons, including the Russian Caravan blend. An assembly of Russian-inspired savoury and sweet bite-sized delights is then presented, delicately prepared by the hotel’s master chefs. You can Indulge in this delectable collection for only P1,150 for two persons (without the workshop).
The first plate consists of savory items which includes Kanapki, an open sandwich topped with smoked salmon, salmon roe, and herbed sour cream. It also has a Pirozhki which is a small pie stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese, roasted peppers, and artichoke.
This colorful and savoury tart is a Capelin Fish Roe with cream cheese, boiled egg, and lemon. Rounding off the plate is the Pickled Herring Blinis, a Russin pancake with beet purée, horseradish cream, quail egg, and caviar.
No afternoon tea set is complete without scones. The Russian Afternoon Tea comes with Cranberry & Orange Scones served with strawberry jam, clotted cream, lemon curd. What I found more interesting though was the sweet Russian Tea Cakes or tea cookies made simply with flour, butter, and rolled into powdered sugar.
The topmost layer is where all the desserts can be found. Let’s start with the Moloko Pitchye (left), a soft chocolate covered candy made from chewy meringue milk souffle and which literally means bird’s milk. The Fabergé Egg Sugar Cookies (right) are designed to look like the iconic jeweled Fabergé eggs which the Tsars gifted their wives and mothers during special occasions. At the back is the Chocolate Korolevsky or King’s Cake, a layered cake traditionally made in the imperial cities in Russia and eaten by aristocracy.
It’s hard to miss the macarons and these are special Honey & Roasted Apple Macarons. Beside them is the Zefir Strawberry Tart with sliced and whipped Strawberry purée in gelatin.
Also on display at the Writers Bar are fine English tea cups and sets from Wedgwood, which has graced the tables of royal families.  Bits and Bobs owner Mila Lee, who also joined our afternoon tea workshop, showed me the various cups and mugs which I really found so elegant and charming. The quality of the tea is highlighted even further when you use these exquisite cups.
We did not discuss it, but we all came here wearing red dresses! I would like to thank Raffles Makati for giving me another wonderful and memorable afternoon tea experience here at the Writers Bar. I’m happy to spend the afternoon with Ms. Monique and Ms. Mila in such a classy location. Make your reservations now for the March 28 and April 25 workshops because slots are limited. Time for my tea!
