Steadily packing on the pounds while working as a telephone operator in the late 1930s, she eventually decided that enough was enough and did something almost unprecedented: Abbye started lifting weights. She soon became a familiar face at Santa Monica’s famed Muscle Beach ...

At 5’1″ and 115, Abbye wasn’t just strong, she was built. Abbye organized the first sanctioned weightlifting meets for women, and had personal PRs that included a 100 lb press, 105lb snatch, and a 135 lb clean & jerk…in 1947.

Yet, she exuded a sense of delicate femininity that ruled the times. After World War II, She opened a gym for women on Sunset Boulevard and began writing the column “Barbelles” for Strength and Health magazine, the world’s influential fitness magazine at the time."

Kara Walker (1969 -) Chain of Events, 2003 Colored pencil on paper 24 x 19 in. ~ Kara Walker captures a puzzling affair in her sketch Chain of Events. Depicted in a radiant yet peculiar yellow, Walker's matron of the scene is fully reclined on the floor with her genitalia on display to the viewer and to the two questionable characters attending to her. The man closest to her holds a decapitated head with swollen lips and a limp, drooping tongue just above her groin. The man’s profile is young but stern despite being obscured. He faces his older partner whose body language is characterized by age, a receding hairline and a pudgy, but not boyish, profile. His hasty and aggressive body language seems unconcerned with aiding the woman and is instead potentially exploitative. Kara Walker's works are famous for the evocative way they address serious, complex and profound topics with her playful silhouettes. Though this is a sketch, she expertly controls the amount of detail and context she provides to the viewer. Kara Walker (b. 1969; Stockton, California) was surrounded by art from a young age due to her father Larry Walker, who worked as a painter. This persuaded her at the tender age of 3 to decide that she wanted to be an artist as well. Her father recalled her often drawing on the sidewalks outside their home. The Walker family eventually moved to Georgia and Walker attended the Atlanta College of Art where she earned her B.F.A in painting and printmaking in 1991.
