Psycho Goreman (2020)
An alien is awoken on Earth by a couple of children, one promptly gains the power to control it but an intergalactic mercenary is sent to kills it in the name of order.
It was good to see some of the old style practical effects used with such variety and creativity and several of the creatures were really pretty cool. Even the digital effects, though very low budget, passed ok since the aesthetic was included as part of the humour. A lot of the overall effect was similar to the Power Rangers franchise.
What emotion there was in the narrative was negated by the prominent comedy, which was amusing at times but doing it so consistently left little balance in the tone. One of the key problems was that the main girl was too difficult to identify with since whenever the chance to develop was offered she defaulted to being distant and unusual.
There were a fair few funny lines, the dialogue being the better source of comedy throughout. Most of the rest of the entertainment was created through the fight scenes which were a little slow due to the practical movements but still decent enough. One of the most amusing parts was the homoerotic suggestions made by the Goreman himself.
While it’s an effective kind of humour to parody the classic tropes of most monster movies, there’s a level that this film passes which causes it to undermine its own story without committing entirely to going full Scary Movie franchise. Several of the plot points needed more closure by the end, in particular the young boy who gets no reconciliation aside from a half-apology.
5/10 -Can’t find a better example of average-
-The human disguise PG wears is based on the main protagonist from Jurassic Park (1993).

Odd, off-skelter, dark humor, gore.
That is 'Psycho Goreman.' 2020.
Before I dive I want to say the lead kid was the single most easy to hate kid I think I've ever seen in anything. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO HATE HER AND YOU FUCKING DO. I was seriously, deep in thought thinking 'what starring kid has ever fucking annoyed me this much?' And all I could come up with was Home Alone (he's kinda a prick).
Movie is about a little girl, who is a sociopathatic, narcissistic, bullying, annoying, loud, judgemental little fuck head who (I don't care: spoilers) is still the same piece of shit at the end of the movie. She learns fuck all.
HOWEVER, she was written that way, and acted perfectly. Like, the casting of this movie worked so well, I wouldn't replace a single actor even with a-list stars. Serious. PERFECT CASTING FOR EVERY ROLE. Can't say that about even some of your fav movies, ya know?
See-weird/odd/stupid humor is hard to do. You tread that line of suspension of belief SO-GOD-DAMN-HARD, that if you tread over it too much, you lose the audience. Cuz it's what I like to call 'weird for weird's sake.' You try to be weird to be weird; not make a point or even be artistic. It's like art for art's sake; are you making a point by not making a point?
ANYWAYS, they do that AND make it a GOREY (not in a really believable way) goofy playful dark comedy? AND IT ALL WORKS? That takes...one big team effort. Kudos. Like could you imagine if they fucked up one special effect, and it took HOURS to reset?
So the little fucker I was talking about gets a gem that controls an evil demon alien god. And cuz she's a little fucker, she hurts a lot of people, intentionally and unintentionally. The whole movie is 'I wonder if a kid who DEFINITELY needs therapy and military school got the powers to control a god?' And it goes to shit as fast as you would think.
I ain't gonna say anything else plot wise. Because it is equal parts semi unpredictable, and TOTALLY BONKERS RANDOM at some points; it's worth the whole ride.
I just wanted to end before I gave the verdict that the special effects, ESPECIALLY on the budget they had, were some of the best I have ever seen. Cuz they're almost all practical; and that's a lot of fucking hands on work. It was FUN to watch the special effects. The alien council alone was so detailed when, for how little scenes they had, they didn't have to be. I respect that extra effort. And I am not into gore or horror at all. Only thing is it sometimes sucked cuz they edited so fast, you didn't get to truly soak it in.
So if you want a fucking weird, surreal, dark, playful (I say that cuz the kids invent their own fucking game. That's creative), gory horror comedy, this is for you. Closest I could say it's like? 'Dale & Tucker vs Evil' meets 'John Dies at the End.' So if you liked those two, I almost promise this is up your alley.
Psycho Goreman: 8/10. Solid movie, worth multiple watches. Just some of the best comedy was at the beginning, so a few scenes drag at the end.
ps-fav part? I was gonna say how everyone swears without swearing (frig), but I would say...the ending. Not gonna tell you why, but...it's so over the top, it works. IT WORKS. Remember above how I said it drags past mid way? The ending makes it worth it.

Welcome to tumblr! 😄
I saw you like horror movies - any favourites/recommendations? I'm always looking for ones I can add to my watchlist 😁
This depends a lot on the type of horror you enjoy. Whether it's jump scares, gore, psychological etc.
I'm always happy to give recommendations though.
I thought "Barbarian" was pretty good and slipped under a lot of people's radars last year.
The Korean movie "The Wailing" is one of my favourite of all time. But most horror buffs have seen it.
Summer of '84, Bodies Bodies Bodies, The Menu and Last Night in Soho are all kind of underrated imo as well. All very different movies though. Really depends what type of horror you're looking for.
"The Void" from 2017 is underrated specifically if you enjoy cosmic horror/Lovecraftian stuff.
If youve already watched a lot of horror movies and you're scraping the bottom of the barrel you could try "Satanic Panic" (2019) or Bloody Hell(2020), the former is slightly more comedic for a horror but they spent so much money on the practical sets at the end and it really gets pretty wild in the third act. The latter is more of an action-horror that's heavy on the gore.
And personally I have a soft spot for low budget movies, in that realm there's "Found"(2012) which was made with $5,000 and a bunch of amateur actors from a local drama club. There's also "They See You" from 2022.
My absolute favorite of the last 3 years is less of a horror and more of a comedy with horror elements; Psycho Goreman. It's almost like a feel-good horror comedy idk how else to describe it. If you grew up with Saban and Super Sentai shows like Power Rangers you'll love the practical effects/puppets/costumes in Psycho Goreman.
