This is project dolphin, worm, Kermit, flipper- ect. He took roughly 3 months to complete. I had started in early June and only today did I finally complete him. he was a passion project of my own original design.
After seeing one of my favorite crocheting Youtubers make her own project, which was a dragon. However, not processing the skill and well patience to do all that I went for a simple, long, tubed dragon based loosely off the one in tears of the Kingdom.
The head was entirely done in single crochet, using only the front loops. This is what gives him his ripped texture. The same technique was applied to the double crocheted body.
This allowed me to give the illusion of scales and a surprisingly good texture to his body. It became a little tricky towards the end, since I had to make sure the point was well secured as well as a point. The stitches a pretty tight since I was using a 3.75 mm hook.
anyways, just wanted to share the passion project three months in the making.
Photos and this wormy boi belong to me, misskazehana

GeneratioNext⏩ - The Dolphin Album Pack
A month behind on my end of summer themed batch for my Patreon ‘Reactor Mode’ supporters but will be shipped next week finally. Was real fun making this one out of my Fluid / Depth (a literal dolphin DAW for PS1) stream from last year. Not pictured: a bonus EP for the two longish tracks that couldn’t fit onto 1 CD. Next release will be sent in December which is usually PS1 themed month for me so probably be based around that... anyway, thanks @ the current and future patrons! [full video album] [patreon]

I’ve got a series of polls I’d like to do!
As a reminder, being pro cap does not mean supporting wild captures.
Different species refers to different cetacean species (for example, supporting keeping bottlenose but not orcas). This poll is only about cetas!

Has there been a case of a hybrid between a bottlenose and an Atlantic spotted dolphin?
Perhaps! No one knows for sure. There has been no definitive proof from DNA samples of wild animals, nor has it ever been confirmed in captive animals. However, there is much reason to believe it is plausible, and one possible hybrid has been observed.
Tumblr media
Let me take you to The Bahamas. Specifically, Great Bahama Bank and Little Bahama Bank. They're sprawling sandbanks surrounding the islands, and many Atlantic spotted dolphins as well as coastal Common bottlenose dolphins make their home there. The spotted dolphins have been studied for more than 30 years by Denise Herzing and her associates. While by far the most encounters are with single-species groups, there have been dozens of mixed species encounters as well.
Many of these are aggressively sexual in nature, with males of both species sparring and trying to enter each other. Male bottlenose dolphins often seem to dominate the smaller spotted dolphins during these encounters, though the spotted dolphins have been seen retaliating, and it is speculated they don't actually experience the harassment as very negative. Since much of the action is male-on-male or involves juvenile animals not yet sexually mature, it seems in many cases the nature of these encounters is more social than sexual. However, multiple cases of interspecific male-on-female copulation have been observed.
With so much going on, the potential for hybridism is great. And since the two species are morphologically quite similar (especially when young), a hybrid could easily fly under the radar.
Tumblr media
In February of 2003, Herzing and her team observed a female spotted dolphin with an unusual looking calf. The calf had a shorter rostrum than is normal for spotted dolphins in the area, but it was longer and more elegant than that of a Bahamian bottlenose. Herzing assumed it could be a hybrid calf. However, since no DNA testing was done and the calf was only observed for two days, this can't be confirmed. In 1989 and 1996 there have also been observations of female spotted dolphins mothering over bottlenose dolphin calves. In one case the calf was emaciated, and the spotted dolphin swimming with it wasn't lactating, so most likely the calf died. In another case it was only a temporary association and the bottlenose calf returned to their real mother after a while.
So a lot of interesting things going on. The studies are still ongoing. To my knowledge no large scale DNA testing has been done, nor any new "suspect" animals observed. Perhaps in the future a hybrid will be confirmed! Or perhaps it turns out this is one of those mixes that just doesn't work.
I highly recommend you read the study the photo comes from: "Interspecies interactions between Atlantic spotted dolphins, Stenella frontalis and bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, on Great Bahama Bank, Bahamas". And many of the other studies done by Denise Herzing's team can be read for free here: https://www.wilddolphinproject.org/media/scientific-publications/

Hi I read in one of your reactions to a question I asked about Ric O'Barry & I am quite interested in that book you mentioned where he bragged about developing a cattle prod to hit the dolphins when they misbehaved. Do you have any idea which book it is & approximately where that information is located?
Hi there, I believe it was Behind the Dolphin Smile and To Free A Dolphin as the main sources of some pretty nasty stuff. Also a lot of gross racism.
Ocean on Twitter took these screenshots while going through the books:
I think this is Behind the Dolphin Smile
Ric asks his buddy to make a “dolphin prod” for Patty who had “gone too far”:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then he brags about the time he punched Patty - literally no one is making him do this and he seems to actually relish it yuck:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean it’s no surprise the guy thinks dolphins get abused in human care - he seemed to enjoy punching a dolphin in the back!
Then in his other book about freeing dolphin he bragged about breaking laws, cutting nets and called dolphins in human care “chubby little clowns” that were all overweight and that’s why he didn’t think the ones he threw out into the wild with no prep weren’t emaciated.
Tumblr media
So what is it Ric? Are dolphins in human care starved to perform or are they overweight and getting free food for nothing?
Tumblr media
This is Buck after he was rescued btw
Then he implies that it’s easier for the dolphins to just “escape accidentally” rather than get permits ti release
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He knew the dolphins who had “escaped” were hungry, he knew they were dependent on people. He thought he could starve them out.
Tumblr media
Ah yes 4 days of being forced out into the wild is totally enough time to evaluate whether they can make it out there or not. Not like dolphins have massive blubber reserves they can use if they can’t feed themselves for a few days.
Also he has beef with the Sarasota Dolphin Research project that Randy Wells is in charge of because he doesn’t like that they’re getting data of dolphins dying in the wild
Tumblr media
It’s wild to me that people read his book and still worship him. So so gross.

Mer May Day One
Imp
Tumblr media
We’ve all seen this one before, but you’re seeing it again wether you want to or not.
The Imps design is a combination of a crustacean and lionfish. The spines on their fins are highly venomous. Despite their appearance they are pretty fast but not the fastest of these Things from the Deep.
Something I’ve noticed while working on it is that the imps in 2016 and Eternal are surprisingly yellow.
As for the Imps colours; their boney plates and fins are the aforementioned orangish yellow colour while their upper arms are a orangish red colour that darkens into a deep maroon. The fin membrane is a reddish colour with the occasional white accent like that of the lionfish.
The reason I chose to do lionfish and shrimp/lobster is because in one of Horsey’s ADDC Mer fics (the one where John and Warren meet) the attacking Sea Demon is described as having spines, and lionfish have venomous spines on their bodies and have also become quite the problem in the Caribbean. Much like how the Sea Demons are a problem for the people in our stories.
I’m still not entirely happy with the design but I like it enough to not plan on changing it further.

i actually used to be a very "WATCH BLACKFISH!1!111" "eMpTy tHe tAnkS" seaworld = bad sort of person. It wasn't until I actually started listening to people who considered themselves "pro-seaworld" or "pro-animal welfare" until I really realized something.
People base their hatred against seaworld against exaggerated or straight up false information. Sources like PETA/SeaWorldofHurt or the dolphin project are the most common ones that I've seen. PETA in itself is obviously not a good source whatsoever (the claim that Corky killed Amaya still astounds me) and I lost all respect for The Dolphin Project when they criticized Winter's trainers after her passing and suggested that they were immoral for rescuing her and letting her have a permanent home with her caretakers instead of just... letting her die.
No, SeaWorld's orcas aren't forced to perform. I visited SWSA this summer and Tuar just straight up decided to not do the splash segment. Kyuquot soloed the entire segment and Tuar still got his fish. Simple as that. Dorsal collapse isn't caused by depression, there are perfectly healthy killer whales in the wild with collapsed dorsal fins. A lot of the claims like "they separate orca mothers and calves!!11" are outdated too. The last mother/calf separation that was not for medical reasons was Takara and Trua in 2009.
Is SeaWorld a perfect angel? No, of course not. There are plenty of valid criticisms against SeaWorld such as their cancellation of The Blue World Project or investing more into coasters than renovating their animal exhibits. Just if you're going to argue against SeaWorld, use valid arguments.
Also obviously don't go after the trainers. It's honestly disgusting when I see comments like "I HOPE THE WHALE EATS THE TRAINER". Those trainers know that animal much better than you, Beth.
Support your AZA accredited facilities.
Yes to all of this. The Dolphin Project is every bit as bad as PETA. They're probably worse in some ways... to my knowledge, PETA hasn't illegally released captive dolphins into the open ocean. It's infuriating that their pages are what pops up whenever someone googles any topic related to killer whales or SeaWorld, and it's why I don't trust most people who say "I did my own research." A Google search isn't research.
