Really wish I could get old-- as in really old-- version of Wesnoth to run on my PC.

I have a Windows 10 computer that’s almost a decade old now, and though it runs Wesnoth 0.1 (the very first one), in terms of other ancient Wesnoth versions, I can’t get anything older than 0.9.7 to run.  I used to have a Windows 7 laptop, and it could run Wesnoth 0.8.4!  I don’t know what happened between Windows updates, but when I try to open 0.8.4 on my PC, it just doesn’t work at all. The only thread I have to go on is that maybe Windows 10 comes with different .dlls, and stopped including certain older ones that older Wesnoth needs..?  Because I got a popup about a missing one when I tried opening 0.8.4′s map editor, and when I installed that .dll there-- though it still didn’t work-- it suddenly was able to make the screen black for a second before giving up, which was more than before.  But having gotten no more error messages since then, and having no luck with running it in compatibility mode, I’ve been stuck ever since.

A lot of my 1.2 and earlier Wesnoths experience bugs that they don’t on older hardware, too... can’t think of a single one that doesn’t crash if I try and change the screen resolution.  Many also experience awful graphical errors if I switch between windowed and fullscreen mode that don’t go away until I restart the program.  There’s also some annoying flickering effects with the monochrome cursor set (my favorite one...) that are only lessened-- not fully gone-- if I use the color cursor.  And in one of the most mysterious and sad glitches of all, in pre-1.2, Delfador’s sprites are prone to inexplicably not appearing in the game where he’s present!  All of this simply did not happen on even slightly older hardware. Some older Wesnoths I’ve been unable to try at all, since they’re based in Linux, and you have to “build” and “compile” them rather than simply double-clicking an executable... and sadly, I am not that much of a nerd yet to do such things easily.  But even then, Wesnoth 0.3 has an executable, but it merely brings up a command prompt window, turns the screen black, then closes before I can read anything clearly... and running compatibility mode has only made that one worse.

This isn’t even all limited to just ancient Wesnoth, either!  Right now, and even on my Windows 7, I’ve experienced a terrible issue with versions of Wesnoth 1.8 where they simply do not register manually installed add-ons.  This is kind of a huge deal, since the manual way is now the only way to install its fanmade content, since its server no longer connects in the program!!  This is perhaps due to the fact that holding add-ons outside the “campaigns” folder was a new feature at the time, and it had some unforeseen issues (even when it still could connect, for some reason, I never found out where they’re stored?).  This is an absolute travesty, since 1.8 was one of the highest points for UMC creativity and output, and now all of that can’t really be played on its intended software. In 1.12, sometimes the names and descriptions of most of my installed add-ons, and all of the text inside them, simply will not display.  I spent hours trying to pin this down to one add-on by removing and replacing them, to no avail.  Because it impacts multiple campaigns at once, and sometimes seemed to impact different ones, I couldn’t figure it out.  I have several dozen add-ons for 1.12, and I have no idea if it’s one add-on in particular causing the issue, or the fact that I have a ton of them by itself.  1.12 isn’t even that old!  It’s a relatively new one, already showing wear and tear for mysterious unknown reasons!!  The only comfort is that it doesn’t always happen, but I don’t know how much longer that may be the case.

Responses on the forum to modestly bringing up these issues seem to usually be “just play the latest version instead”, but I don’t always want to do that!  I shouldn’t have to do that!  The older versions still have their charms, and their unique style, lots of minor differences that build up, and sometimes I don’t want to have to wait for some kind soul with plenty of time to port it for me.  I don’t know how to use wmllint to port them myself (why can’t anyone explain it concisely?!), and even if I did, a lot of old UMC is buggy even on its intended version, and wmllint apparently struggles with things like custom terrains.

I guess I just wish there was more maintenance and advice out there for running older versions of this game in the modern era... advice that’s accessible and so on... I’m unsure if anyone else still cares about older versions of Wesnoth, but I certainly do.  Wesnoth's older versions were a big part of my childhood!  And even the versions that were so old that I never tried them as a child still fascinate and charm me.  I just wish I was skilled enough to support them myself.

It became fall all of a sudden again. It is very chill tonight. There is a brisk breeze coming in from the cracked window. And that's nice. I think it will help me sleep.

I actually did sleep good last night. I put a sleep mask on and that helped but that always makes my eyes feel gummy in the morning. So mixed results.

I think I am getting sick though. The bridge of my nose hurts and last time that happened I had a sinus infection. So with the bridge of my nose pain and the pain in my mouth, I think I am getting sick.

So I was still very stressed about today. But the nice thing I had to focus on was it was Jamess birthday!! And while they don't love their birthday I love them and I'm so glad they are here.

I did forget about it until we were dressed and in the car. I looked over at them and was like. !!! Birthday!! And apparently Jess was the first one to say it followed by Charlotte. Hilarious.

James would take me to the museum before they went to get our oil changed. Which ended up being a whole morning activity. It took 4 hours!! I felt horrible that they had to sit there when they could have been biking. On their birthday!! Ugh.

The plan was for James to come back for me later. And they would. But I was frustrated that they didn't get to do the things they had wanted.

I would have a pretty good day though. I let Jessica know I wasn't doing 100%. But I would be fine overall. I am doing pretty good holding it together. My head just hurts and I get tired quick. So I was slightly worried about my last tour of the day. But then Jessica said I didn't have to do it. The group went form 40 to 10 and so I didn't have to feel bad and could just focus on my two programs.

And the group I had was so sweet. They were really good kids. I got them off the bus and we headed to the assembly line pretty fast.

I was alone with them (and their chaperones) and we got to work.

We had laughs. And people asking me what their jobs were even though I kept saying not to do that. But they all worked hard and it was a good time.

And then it was time for lunch. We did make a 5 minutes stop in the car. Got some pictures. And I dropped them off so I could take a little break. I read an article on my phone and ate my nachos. It turned out my watch was wrong a lot. So I gave them a 5 minute warning to soon. But it's all good. I should replace my watch batteries soon.

The cannery went really well. They were really engaged and so I had fun asking and answering my questions. And the flow was good. Gaby was D and she has a great yell so that was funny. And Cindy and Michael continued to learn all the pieces of the cannery. And I think it was a really successful day.

James was still stuck at the dealership through the end of my cannery. But then the car was done and they headed to the museum.

Once my kids left I went to help with oysters. There was so weirdness when one of my coworkers was making cans? We don't need cans to be made. And she didn't seem to understand us when we said that and she just kept saying we needed more cans. So I texted Jessica and she was like. What. And came up. And it turned out she was really just fixing the messed up cans. So it was fine.

I helped her take some apart and fix them or repurpose them as best we could. I got frustrated with one of our hot glue guns because it was dripping and I got a blister on my fingertip. Which was infuriating to me. I hate getting burnt. It makes me feel stupid.

But then it was 2. And James was there to get me. I checked in with Jessica. She told me of I felt worse tomorrow to take the day off. But I think I'll be okay to power through.

James was a little frustrated. With the oil taking 4 hours. Not getting to bike. So I encouraged them to do so. We would drive home. I would get changed to lay down. And James would go bike.

I slept pretty hard. And I felt a little weird when I got up. But then James was there. They went to shower before joining me on bed for a while. Before I had to get up and got dressed for Jamess birthday dinner.

We went to their parents place to meet them before we walked to busboys and poets for dinner. Charlotte would join us eventually. She was the assistant coach for their powder puff football game. They won. Congrats. And we had a pretty nice dinner.

I texted with Jess. She said I should get falafel. This was a good call and was excellent. And while I think there was so issue with Anne and Tucker hearing me, the conversation was still nice and I had a good time. I am glad we celebrated my James.

I did give James the little gifts I got them. A knock of pair of their fancy gloves. A book about baseball plays in 1969. And a whole pack of personalized iron on tags with their name and phone number so if they lose things they will get them back easier.

We walked back to the cars. And me and James gave hugs all around. We saw stray cats. Probably not the one that bit me. But they were cute.

We came home and had pumpkin pie. James started laundry. And I worked on carving stamps. It has been a nice night.

I am ready to sleep though. I am feeling tired but am trying to not feel sick. Though I can feel it in my chest.

If only I had a calm, confident sense of security for the future ahead. If only I knew what the future held so I knew what to expect. If it was to be better than expected, I could breathe a sigh of relief and if it wasn’t, I could at least relax until the shit really hit the fan.

While I still have an iPhone, I should make a point of verbally purging my thoughts on Twitter. It’s so therapeutic, not that writing isn’t. Musk taking over really fucked things up. Anyway, I’m almost worried about money as much as my health. Yes, we have a guaranteed income but sometimes that’s just not enough. I have four years before I can collect and add to our income and while we’re both doing little odds and ends on the side, it’s not enough for big things. We have no cushion for if something big breaks that costs many hundreds or possibly even thousands of dollars. If only I hadn’t needed surgery and had so many fucking health issues! That wouldn’t have stopped the AC from breaking but it would have helped.

They’re slowly implementing changes to eliminate cheaters when it comes to horserace betting. Ray was a good boy today but that’s mostly because he was out for most of the day. Although Tom did say he was home when the groceries came and he didn’t hear anything.

He got back about 20 minutes ago so we’ll see if I hear the TV. It didn’t stop till about 10:00 last night which was actually a little earlier than I guessed it would. There are always many ambient sounds around us and as Tom read, an empty classroom typically registers at 33 decibels. So if any of those subtle, barely audible sounds I’m hearing right now are from him, I can’t tell. I think he’s quiet, though. Even if he stayed this way, we both agree it would be good to add the soundproofing.

Plot Summary: Following the events of the Andromeda Strain scientists believed the Andromeda Strain was no longer a threat and it faded from public attention. Many decades later, a government watch program finds signs that the Andromeda Strain is reemerging in the Amazon rainforest. An elite team of scientists is recruited to travel to the appearing anomaly, study it, and ultimately figure out how to stop it. They must travel through uncharted areas of the forest while fighting an unknown alien force that wants to stop their meddling at any cost. Tragedy and action go hand and hand in this story as the scientists make necessary sacrifices to save the world.

TL:DR: A poor attempt at recapturing the scientific wonder found in books like The Martian, this book suffers from dense, unnecessary scientific explanations, horrible characters, obnoxious foreshadowing and a bad antagonist.

Thoughts and Feelings: The original Andromeda Strain was a sci fi book written in 1969 by Michael Crichton who also wrote the Jurassic Park books. He was a great science fiction writer with really good ideas. It's a book I look back on very fondly. So when I found out there was a follow up book written by a different author I was extremely curious. Especially because the original story did not leave any room for sequels. So this story was already starting at a deficit and unfortunately it did not make up for it in any way. I had not read any books by Daniel Wilson before this book and I do not plan on reading anymore of his books after it.

The first half of this book is dragged down by a lot of unnecessary science that is not necessary to the story, the characters, or the understanding of the technology being presented. It feels like it was trying to mimic the type of science rambling and explanation that was so successful in Andy Weir's books, but in Andromeda Evolution the science lacks any character. In The Martian we have Mark Watney infusing his wit and sarcasm into the explanations, but in this book it reads like a text book with no personality.

Foreshadowing is a technique that should be subtle and used sparingly throughout a book. Andromeda Evolution ends every single chapter with a premonition of the future events of the book to the point where it stops being foreshadowing and becomes spoilers in their own rights. It resulted in me not being surprised by anything that was happening as well as keeping me from caring about the characters or the stakes being raised. Because I already knew what was going to happen.

The characters in this book are bad. All of the characters are introduced right at the beginning subsequently and the introductions throw the recommendation of 'show don't tell' straight out the window. You will have to suffer through boring descriptions of these scientists idiosyncracies and the struggles that they have fought through to get where they are. Of a special mention is the introduction of the female characters. Wilson makes sure to shove down the readers' throats that these women have struggled and they have been discriminated against there whole lives. And because of that they are super amazing, smart, and capable of taking care of themselves. Too bad they don't ever get to really display that.

There's just no nuance to this book and while there is action going on through out it ends up feeling boring.

To continue on with my dislike of the characters in this book, the primary antagonist and secret villain behind the mutation and spread of the virus being the disabled woman who is apparently a psychopath whose only goal is to murder all of her teammates and 'force the human race' to evolve faster is just so not it.

Also the romance between Jeremy Stone and Nidhi Vedala was SO WEIRD and unnecessary and badly written. The book starts with Nidhi describing in detail how much she hates Jeremy and then through the course of the event of the books through no character growth or real interactions she ends up in love with him. The female characters in this book were written as if Daniel was really trying to write 'strong female characters' but he has not idea what that means and just made them 2D images of what a strong woman might be.

Some advice for winter weather

weather is wonky and bad winter weather is hitting some places where people may not be prepared for it or may not know how to handle it or what to expect. as someone who has lived in areas with bad winters their entire life, I've asked some people what advice or tips they have for people new to snow icy conditions

From a few mechanics

have good brakes and tires. they all seemed to agree that a lot of the accidents they see cars from happened because someone involved didn't have good brakes or tires

from a guy that runs a tire shop- if you can't afford good snow tires, call and ask if they have any sort of community fund or program to help pay for them. explain your situation and a lot of times people want to help

if you have a front wheel drive car, put sand bags in the back. adding the extra weight helps with traction in the rear tires (as someone with a front wheel drive car this does help a ton)

double check that all your lights are working, headlights, tail lights, blinkers, and interior lights

let your engine heat up before you go anywhere and if you can, drive more than about 10 miles at a time (helps your engine in the long run)

if you're waiting for a tow truck, be nice to the driver. you may be waiting a while if other cars are possibly a higher priority situation or it might not be safe for the tow truck to get to you in the moment

From a teacher

a lot of high schools have gone to virtual days instead of snow days, teachers know that in these cases students may have to watch younger siblings. communicate your situations.

seasonal depression gets worse when people are stuck in their houses, if you're struggling, say something

if the roads are bad, don't drive unless absolutely necessary

if roads are bad and you need to drive, go slow with your flashers on. if people behind you start getting impatient pull over and let them pass

Don't text and drive. don't do it ever, but especially if there's snow or ice. just don't do it (this is the summed up version from the ten minute talk he gave me)

if for whatever reason you find yourself stranded, broken down, or waiting on a tow truck, call the police if you don't feel safe or if you have a small child in the car at risk of getting too cold

General advice from some people who have seen their fair share of bad winters

keep an emergency kit in your car, it should include a flashlight, extra batteries, a wool or thermal blanket, and a coffee tin or aluminum can with tea lights and a lighter or matches. lighting the tea lights in the can should give you at least fifteen minutes of warmth

dress in layers

you can get thermal under wear from Walmart for about $10 (note: this price is from a boomer who has not bought thermal under wear in at least ten years and i didn't bother to price check)

if you get frostbite, run the area under cool water and slowly bring it to room temperature as you thaw. seek medical attention if you can

with the right gear, winter walks are beautiful and nature should be enjoyed. make sure you do something fun and spend some time in it, it's especially fun to spend time with friends and family in snow

if you have pets, make sure you buy pet safe anti-freeze and salt

if you have children in carseats, don't strap them in with a puffy jacket on them

if you get out of your car after starting it, keep a window open just in case the doors are locked or a child (insert my mothers look over to me as she said this) or pet might lock you out of the car

keep an eye on walkways for ice, if you start to fall brace yourself and try to fall on your butt, don't try to catch yourself with your hands out

What is Gemini?

Gemini is a large language model that runs generative artificial intelligence applications; it can summarize text, create images and answer questions. Gemini was trained on Google’s Tensor Processing Units v4 and v5e.

Google’s Bard is a generative AI based on the PaLM large language mode. Starting today, Gemini will be used to give Bard “more advanced reasoning, planning, understanding and more,” according to a Google press release.

Gemini comes in three model sizes: Ultra, Pro and Nano. Ultra is the most capable, Nano is the smallest and most efficient, and Pro sits in the middle for general tasks. I stopped coming on here for like almost a month i think bc i added some tags onto a post i reblogged and the op called me out and said i completely misunderstood everything (except they misunderstood what i was trying to say so fuck me ig) and i got upset and dipped. In the meantime, lots of stuff has happened, but also not much.

I went back to university, the semester started last Thursday and it’s going well so far, I’m majoring in Museum Studies bc I am a big nerd, and it’s a 100% online program so I’m still working and I don’t have to like, move to Arizona, which is good.

Work is meh, we’re starting vaccine clinics again soon so I’ll be doing that again with this season’s flu and covid shots, and maybe other vaccines as well I’m not sure what the regulations are now. We still only have one pharmacist on staff so we’re stuck with a rotating cast of floaters, some of whom are more helpful than others. And the customers are still horrible, that hasn’t changed. I got yelled at for 10 minutes today by someone who’s doctor called in over a dozen prescriptions and then faxed us and cancelled all of them so we put them all back, which was a mistake apparently and then after we finally got it sorted and got them called in again, we were supposed to close in 10 minutes so it was physically impossible to fill 15 prescriptions for one person, and she wanted us to stay open late just for her, which legally we can’t do and also no, we want to go home and she was being so rude we didn’t really want to help her at all. So yeah, work is work

In good news, I’ve been talking to someone i matched with on a dating app (my intro that they messaged me about was mcr related, so you know they’re a keeper) and we’ve been on 2 dates and text a lot and we’re planning on hanging out again this Tuesday. They’re a special ed teacher and they have adhd so they get how my brain works and they work with kids whose brains work similarly to both of ours, and they’re really funny and cool and smart and nice and pretty, I really hope this keeps going well bc I really like them.

I watched the newest season of Heartstopper twice in a row after it came out, reread all the comics that are out (Alice Oseman is still publishing them, too, so that’s nice) and then rewatched both seasons in a row. It’s so cute and so good and i can feel the hyperfixation building. I’ve watched it enough that I keep slipping into a british accent when I talk, which is entirely unintentional but not the worst thing. I can also do it on purpose, but i tend to pick up accents from people I hear talk a lot, which is maybe the only fun side effect of masking my whole life

I’ve seen a few really good plays and musicals recently, I know I saw The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window before i stopped posting on here, but that was really good, and then I saw Kimberly Akimbo the other day, it was INCREDIBLE. The music and the writing are amazing, obviously, and the actors were all so good, again obviously. They won 5 Tony’s last season, including for Best Musical and Best Featured Actress in a musical and Best Lead Actress in a musical, which were so well-deserved, I seriously cannot hype this show up enough. There’s so many good shows on Broadway right now and I wish I could see them all, there were a bunch I wanted to see but closed before I got the chance, too, including Prima Facie starring Jody Comer, but I bought the script for that one.

In less fun news, I think i might need to put a read more here bc there be triggers coming

Between my chronic GI issues (trying to see a specialist about it again but there’s a whole mess of problems with that i just don’t feel like typing) and watching season 2 of Heartstopper and also rereading it and seeing Charlie struggling with his eating disorder, I’ve lapsed pretty hard with my own. I can’t really call it a relapse bc I was never really actually trying to recover, but I was trying for a while to eat a little more normally, but that’s basically out the window now. Thanks brain, so helpful of you to see a person struggling with a similar mental illness to mine and say “well they’re sicker than you so you suck and also you need to work harder at being sick like them” like FUCK OFF that’s not helpful and also Charlie is literally a fictional character and most of the storyline is about how he’s trying to get help for his ed and how awful they are, and his ed and mine aren’t the same, nor are our reasons for being disordered. So that’s not been fun.

I also realized (after watching a video by a therapist reacting to the scene when Ben assaults Charlie in Heartstopper and then going and obsessively researching legal definitions) that what happened to me in the summer of 2019 would probably be classified as a rape, not just a sexual assault. Which it also was, but what happened falls under the legal definition of rape, not just assault. So I’ve been spiraling about that, even though I still remember almost none of it and once again my garbage brain has decided that I’m somehow not allowed to be that upset or say I’m traumatized bc I don’t experience two of the most common symptoms of ptsd (flashbacks and nightmares) so clearly, this is all me being dramatic, even though basically everything else fits. And those aren’t required to be diagnosed with ptsd. Not that I WANT ptsd, but for whatever reason I feel like i’m not allowed to even say i’m a little bit traumatized by what happened bc of that. Again, stupid brain. I also realized after talking to the person I’ve been talking to (idk if we’re officially dating, maybe i should ask) about boundaries and what we’re both comfortable with, that the last person who I’ve had any “romantic” physical contact with was the person who raped me, and also the only sexual contact I’ve ever had (unless i’ve blocked out more than just the one assault I know happened) was with that same person, so now i’m extremely anxious about doing anything with the person i’m sort of maybe dating, even though neither of us are interested in just jumping right to physical intimacy, they’ve also experienced similar situations so they’re anxious about it too, and also they’re a nice person who i’d trust to not push it if i wasn’t comfortable with something, but idk how to say “i’m anxious about kissing you even though i like you and i want to kiss you bc the last person i kissed was the person who raped me over 4 years ago”

I’m working on finding a new therapist now that i’m done with my IOP and i know that’s going to be one of the (far too many) things i need to deal with in therapy, as well as all the other trauma from that summer, and from my previous university experience, and my whole fucking childhood, and also my other issues that aren’t necessarily trauma related, although most of them probably are to a certain extent bc being an undiagnosed audhd person who also doesn’t realize they’re trans until they’re an adult is inherently traumatic.
