Watcher fans sure are entitled and a little insane, ngl. "No one is going to sign up for your service! We're all poor! You've made the worst decision, and you'll be back in no time!" Saying this directly to the creators really reminds you of how low the respect for people you don't personally know has gone. I miss the forth wall between creator and audience.

I get and fully understand not having the money to support them, but... Watcher does have fans with money. A lot of them actually. They have merch sales. Their live tour sells out most venues. They have thousands of supporters on Patreon, where the cheapest tier is $5. They're able to gauge the rough finances of their staunchest supporters; that's how they landed on the subscription price. Yes, this move will reduce their viewership in sheer numbers, but to say all of their fans are broke and none will follow/support is factually incorrect.

It may not be a decision everyone agrees with, but severing the limitations of advertisers and youtube in favor of artistic freedom is a good thing. Yes, even if it comes with a loss of revenue. They understand that risk.

Also, I'm begging people to stop treating this like "another Netflix" or something and instead look at it as, "I am supporting a creator I like, similar to Patreon." They literally said in the video that they don't care if you share accounts. Get five friends, and you'll pay $1/mo.

I hate feeling compelled to rant in favor of their decision because I have my own reservations about whether it's the best move. However, I know it's not a choice they made lightly, and I like to think they understand that they'll need to branch out like crazy to entice subscribers.

Tbh, when I first saw the ads, I thought they were separate actors lmao because they have such distinct personalities. It takes a good actor to act 'badly' and corny, but it worked so well for the Koskelas. Ilmo has this big body language, exaggerated gestures, boomy and vivid voice. Neatly balanced out by Jaakko who gives more dead-pan deliveries with a straight face. But! He has his own charms: subtle facial expressions and gestures, how he comes alive when he flips the government the bird, subtle smiles.

In-game Ilmo also have a very expressive face and makes grand gestures when he promotes the ads and Coffee World (props to the animators). Also I like that he is slightly hunched over in-game.

Then we have their final moments together. They sound angry, but also desperate because they've gone through many years of supernatural horror and it seems they're so close to putting an end to it. It's out of love for their community and each other. The stakes are so high, so ofc they're pissed off when some shady governments swoop in and try to save the day!

After Jaakko gets brutally killed off, you can hear the emotion in Ilmo's voice. Experiencing all stages of grief at the same time ;_; When he calls out for his brother, it sounds so soft and broken 😭

And finally, Ilmari in the short movie. Deranged, unhinged, sadistic man <3 Love him. He is cleanly put together at the beginning, with his hair slick back but that quickly changes. The way he threatens the detective like a starved wolf is just 😫

He gleefully stabs the detective to death, overcome with bloodlust and his hair gets all messy 👌 He is a completely different character from Ilmo.

Hey could ads on tumblr not play music or sounds when I don’t event click on them? It would be great if ads didn’t constantly run while I’m using the app either. I’d also like it if ads didn’t just shove their way onto my screen on top of posts. I understand the need for ads, that they “need” to make money. But this website, this app, it’s bothersome enough to use with the constant horrible changes to the UI and policy that it doesn’t need literal pop up ads.

What do you think about the multiple releases of a song that’s become so popular? I feel like so many people are doing it now, I guess to boost the streams. It’s literally what Demi Lovato is doing right now, making rock versions of her songs. I personally didn’t use to mind it because more music is always good but recently it’s starting to feel like the artists are just milking the popular and charting songs as much as possible. It’s giving me the horrible tiktok alphabet song vibes that had like 6 different versions but still sounded basically the same. Since Monsters I feel like ATL has been going way more the “music industry way” really pushing all their singles to radio, and I get it, if you have a chance to do it and do better for yourself why not do it, but also makes me think about how before Monsters charted they were literally talking on CTL about how they gave up on trying to have radio singles and that there are other ways to measure success. I found it frustrating when they did the Demi version of Monsters, Alex kept saying they were just reimagining the song and celebrating it when in fact it was mostly just to cross it over to pop radio, which I’ve heard him mention maybe once or twice because it doesn’t sound as good. It just feels a little cheap to me instead of doing something creative. Like for example I love the covers that The Maine does because it never sounds like the original song and they just make it their own. It made me like the Justin Bieber song they covered back in the day. That being said I love the piano version of Calm Down and can appreciate the fact that that’s not something they’ve ever really done before. But if you’re going to do other versions of songs to add something to them don’t just go for the singles then. There are much better songs for it. The one thing that they did I guess that wasn’t going with the industry trend was not making a full on pop-punk album when everyone else was doing it but I don’t think they would ever really do that anyway just because of how much they dislike the pop-punk label.

Could not agree more with everything you've said! Like sure the music industry is hard and money and popularity are challenges so I don’t want to fault people for playing the game in these silly as fuck ways but there are artists that prove you don’t have to follow thirsty trends to maintain. And much to your point in The Maine’s case, putting out great music (and hustle like nobody's business) is what’s getting them more recognition, not games.
