Sometimes a cishet movie is a hit in this community even without any stories or characters reflecting us (or at least not explicitly or intentionally or... tastefully). Either because of its campiness and witty banter, its drama, its weirdness, amazing soundtrack and costumes or its diva-like personality taking center stage. Please don't take this poll seriously.

The level of drama, camp and the number drag parodies it has is way more important than possible romantic relationships or sexual tension in submitted films. Also there's ace and aro people voting. Keep them in mind!

It has to be cishet but somehow still queer. Can be the camp, general weirdness, gnc clothes, sassiness, the inclusion of a diva, accidental coding, or some other secret option. Honestly if you find a way to reason so hard it works, you could even try to submit The Godfather (... it is very quotable...)

I love Mamma Mia but it does have gay characters. This poll came about because I found that a lot of older movies had queer fans that were able to connect to others through these movies while creating their own spaces. This was despite the movie being "straight and gender conforming". I love that there's more rep now, but I'm aiming for this to poll contain more vintage movies for a reason. and I want to expand my watchlist. I'm aware that there are movies from the 70s, 1920s, and other older eras with explicitly gay themes and characters like Victim 1961 or Salome 1920 (and I encourage you to widen your scope of historically significant films) but this isn't that poll.

Old movies with very stealth trans or gay coding with its side characters and unintentional lgbt+ coding is allowed, but you know these things can be hit or miss. Besides, I put Heathers on here even though it's homophobic. Fun but homophobic. You can submit movies with homophobia or conformist themes to a degree.

Given that not a lot of people watch older movies, the battling polls will be paired by decade until it gets whittled down to the finals where old and young will both compete.

Competition will start May 1 in honor of The Wicker Man 1973, which i wish counted as a poll entry, but I limited myself to one movie I'd slip into the tournament despite the fact that there's not a lot of lgbt fans of the movie. And this was my runner up because I really liked The Exorcist's Regan and Karras. Unless someone else submits him, Wicker Man's not gonna be there. I don't know if you're asking this question directly in relation to what's happening right now, but I do want to say that the fandom is strong. Every day we're getting new shippers--people who are reading the books to their kids, or teenagers who are reading it for themselves, or even people who have watched the movies and are interested in expanding the story. So I don't see Dramione going away any time soon. It is, I believe, the second or third largest ship in the fandom, after Drarry and maybe Harmony.

A few years ago, people got upset that their stuff was being reposted to other sites. And this book binding thing has been an issue for almost a decade now. So they're going to continue. And if it's not these issues, it will be other issues. Fanfiction is something that was kind of secret and in the shadows in the past, and now we're seeing so many stories turned into books (50 Shades of Grey, The Maze Runner) and movies (The Kissing Booth, Mea Culpa). So people aren't nearly as embarrassed as they used to be about sharing that they read this stuff, and being vocal about it is also going to bring more fans in, and ultimately more authors.

So I'm super hopeful and very proud of everyone that puts themselves out there to write a story, or review a story, or share a story with a friend, because you're helping us grow as a ship.

So I was just wondering, so many popular netflix shows were cancelled and I still remember the huge noise the cancellation of those shows caused. Like for example Anne With An E and Warrior Nun, the whole internet moved for them and still, they weren't picked up by another streaming service.

It's true that whenever a show is cancelled -- especially a multi-season, popular show with a built-in fanbase like Anne With An E -- it seems like the whole internet is awash with cries of outrage, support, and, to be blunt, threats against the people who cancel it. Internet campaigning is as old as the internet, and even older than that if you count print media and letter writing campaigns before that. It's human nature to get loud about bad things, and Save-The-Show campaigns are more prone to that than most things, since media is a generally uniting and far-reaching force.

I will note that Warrior Nun's fans are still working towards a pick-up by Max (formerly HBOMax), so I'll leave them off of this comparison, as well as wishing them the best of luck.

To be blunt, yes our show really does stand a chance. I've been involved in more than my share of Save-The-Show campaigns over the last 15+ years, and I've never seen a response by people outside the fandom like this before. We're sitting at exactly 2 weeks since cancellation and we've had dozens of articles from entertainment, business, finance, and human interest magazines and sites alike, huge, sustained tweet numbers, trended every single day, joyful engagement by cast/crew/related persons, the works. It's not a level of response I've ever seen via a fan campaign, not in the ones I've been a part of and not in the ones I've seen from the sidelines.

Unlike a lot of unsuccessful campaigns, ours is entirely fan-led. I've said many times IRL over the last two weeks that I'd be vastly more worried if Cornish/CF/Stroud were leading this charge. If the show runners/creators/etc are the ones spearheading things, experience tells us that things are bleak from the get-go. This isn't a creator-led endeavor where the most noise comes from 4 or 5 people who directly profit off of the show; Joe Cornish posted once on Instagram (in a very ballsy move, I'll note, giving the fans numbers/graphics to use without directly showing his hand), the Strouds are mostly liking tweets and engaging in fan engagement to the side of the campaign (Stroud is careful never to use the #savelockwoodandco hashtag or any hashtag related to a particular streaming service), and the cast and crew of the show/CF are posting Lockwood & Co related videos and pictures without coming out as part of the #SaveLockwoodAndCo movement. To borrow a phrase, they're going carefully.

This is a good thing.

Networks and Streaming Sites don't care how passionate a creator, cast, or crew are. They don't care about how many people are mad a show is cancelled either. What they care about is exactly what we're working in this campaign to give them -- actionable data.

The AWAE cancellation is a good example, sadly. While it had a lot of enthusiasm -- I was on the sidelines for this, but I did heartily enjoy the show, and would have liked them to get enough time to finish the main story, rather than cutting it off and forcing a time skip as they did -- it didn't have the numbers. Not streaming hours or being generally known -- as a preexisting IP it was very well-known -- but sustained numbers post-cancellation. It had a lot of very angry (understandably) people, a few articles about the cancellation, and that was about it. The creators knew for at least part of the last season that it was unlikely they'd get another one, and wrapped up the major storyline (Anne and Gil) as best they could. It was a rushed ending (not quite Merlin levels of rushed, but definitely rushed), but it's a linear story from the books, and the story did end.

It's not enough to be angry in campaigns to save a show. Anger is a great short-term motivator, but for all but the most focused of us, anger burns out like a match -- hot at first, but rather useless very quickly. Recent and memorable (unnamed to avoid offense where none is intended) campaigns were filled with angry posts about betrayal by the network (completely understandably), but these campaigns didn't do what a successful campaign must: add numbers and news.

It's a testament to the strength of character in all of you -- the fandom -- that the immediate and understandable anger upon cancellation has died down, but our numbers have kept growing. The articles aren't about "it's so sad this show was cancelled" anymore, they're about fan engagement, they're about sheer business sense. The people of the press aren't writing because they're fans, or because it's today's story, but rather because Lockwood and Co has become a sort of symbol for what's wrong with the streaming industry and Netflix in particular. We're trending in Business and Finance as well as in Entertainment, for heaven's sake.

This show, according to all the numbers and Netflix's own statement, did well. It passed the figures it needed to be renewed.

But it wasn't. That's been our focus, and that's what's newsworthy. And we can only help it along by being genuine, passionate, and positive above all else.

This fandom has done an amazing job being polite, professional, empathetic, and collected. No one is ritually burning anything, no one is sending envelopes of razor blades or Purposely Mysterious White Powder to executives (yes, these have happened), no one is threatening physical harm to the poor interns in charge of Netflix's twitter, tumblr, instagram, tiktok, or, heck, LinkedIn or anything.

Our numbers are growing -- if you pay close attention to twitter like the other mod of this blog does, you'll note that people are discovering, watching, loving, and turning around and campaigning for this show through our hashtags and engagement. Having a show add so many people post-cancellation is a rare, rare thing -- people will generally stay away from a cancelled show, not watch it. And yet we grow every day in leaps and bounds.

This post is far too long, but yes, we're different from the majority of campaigns. We have the quiet and subtle support of Those In Charge of the show, but they're not the ones driving this boat. Because of our consistent, diversified efforts and our insistence on sticking to data and logic in an enthusiastic and optimistic way, people have sat up and taken continued notice.

Lockwood and Co (and #savelockwoodandco by extension) has become a beacon to those dissatisfied with the business of TV, and has gained substantial fans along the way.

Yes, we have a chance. Let's keep lighting our ghost lamps -- they shine far further than we can comprehend.

This is such a great question and the fandom isn’t gonna like my answer but, in my long (LONG) experience of being a vampire chronicles fan, it’s because Anne Rice was not really directly involved in its creation and neither was Christopher Rice.

As someone who watched AR decide that she’d like the series to become a tv show, and then subsequently watched it get shopped around to multiple different networks and show runners for literal YEARS (even superfan Bryan Fuller at one point until he got run off by the Rices), when the rights were finally sold in full to AMC I kind of breathed a sigh of relief. AR has a long history of being incredibly picky about who does what with her IP (even fanfiction, which yes, she eventually walked back but it was really awful for fan creators for a while there. I remember being personally sent a cease and desist email when I was a fucking kid for writing fic, and the way fic writers had to create their own geocities sites in order to get around her lawyers). AR has never accepted anything less than a completely faithful depiction of her characters, unless she herself was writing it (like with the IWTV movie script). While I don’t necessarily blame her for wanting her stories told her way, I imagine it made her incredibly difficult to work with. I think she got in her own way a lot in service of having full control.

I also don’t think AR was ever fully against a portrayal where her characters are explicitly queer and in love since, especially in the later books, they are. Loustat is canon endgame in the books, after all. But I do think she was…timid? For some reason? About making it explicit earlier on. I have my own opinions about that (coughfetishisationcough), but honestly we don’t know why. She never really said, as far as I know.

I do think AMC has been able to do what they want and tell the story they want to tell with these characters because they weren’t impeded by the Rices’ micromanaging though. They own the rights to all of her series for however many years, and it seems like they want to tell the full, very queer, very fucked up story. I am personally VERY EXCITED about it. I, and I think other fans too, care less about a fully faithful depiction if it is in service of making good television and telling a story with characters I love. I’ve only seen one episode but I think AMC is doing a good job of staying true to the heart of the characters while eschewing some of the plot, and I’m not mad about it. For me, the VC have always been very character driven rather than plot driven anyways.

Tl;dr the reason the show is so gay is because AMC has come to play and AR doesn’t really have a say anymore 🤷‍♀️

It absolutely makes sense, people should be more grateful and stop complaining about poll runners' decisions. If they're upset, they can always block you.

See, here's the thing. The comments about the seeding weren't made to me directly, and if I wasn't nosy I would have never seen them at all. They were mostly in the tags of a post, or the reblog of a memes, and I'm not even mad about it. No one came to me to be rude or stir up anything, or to "call me out" or anything like that!

I even made a post earlier about how civil things are in this first round, and how much I appreciate it, after seeing hell break loose on other polls these last few weeks!

I just wanted to explain my thought process, because I realized I never did, and that's not fair to people who are curious. Honestly, if anyone has any questions about the decisions I made or what I did to build the bracket/create the submission form, I welcome them! That's part of why I'm keeping anon open in my inbox as long as the kindness and civility continues! My work schedule is chaos, but I really do want to talk and interact with people in these fandoms, talk about characters we love, all of the good stuff that makes tumblr great.

That being said, if someone wanted to block me for any reason, mute any tags, ignore me completely - they should absolutely feel free to do that. This site should be a safe place for people, not something that frustrates them or makes them upset. If I do anything to affect people like that, absolutely block me and don't feel bad about it.

Greta Van Fleet - Kalamazoo

Welcome to the first ever Barricade Babe concert review. 🍒This week I wrote about the first concert I attended this year! On March 10th, I attended Greta Van Fleet in my hometown Kalamazoo Michigan. Tickets for this show ranged from $70-$100+ depending on where your ticket was purchased from. I bought my ticket during Greta’s Pre-Sale with a code emailed to me for being a part of the Peaceful Army. You can typically join bands/artists fan groups by signing up through email, where you receive special offers and announcements earlier than the normal public.

The Outfit

Picking out an outfit for a show has to be one of my favorite but also most difficult things about the concert experience. It is a way for every individual to be able to express who they are in a very safe, loving and positive environment. It’s an opportunity for people to dress up and feel confident about something that is very important to them. I can feel & see the time and love people put into curating their outfits especially for a GVF show. For this show, I was given an amazing pair of butterfly bell bottoms pants from Free People for Christmas. There was a lot of blue, pinks, reds, oranges and creams in my pants so I went with a blue silk top to make the blue butterflies really stand out! I am notorious for always wearing my Sinclair zip up Doc Martens, which are comfy and go with almost everything. Lastly, I had a last minute idea of making a DIY cowboy hat that I wrote “ DO IT JAKEY” on the front and bedazzled little strings around the brim of the hat. This small little DIY project happened to set the trajectory for bedazzled, funny sayings, cowboy hats for the remaining DIG shows.

Pre-Show: “The Battle at the Grassy Knoll”

My friend and I showed up to camp out the day of the show at around 8:30 am. The venue, The Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo was not allowing on site camping until 10am the day of. Now my friend and I went and had breakfast around 9am because there was no organized “fan line” that would give people the opportunity to line up on property at 10am. Due to the fact there was no established line or system of how the fans would line up at the doors, this created the Battle at the Grassy Knoll as the fans would like to call it. I think this was a little unfair to the fans who had been waiting across the street from the venue longer than others. But when people started arriving we were all patiently waiting for security to give us better direction. He kept referring to the little curb before the parking lot as the “Grassy Knoll” and at 10am people started “walking” aka RUNNING to one of the two doors they were letting people in through.

Now this is where things became a little unfair due to the fact if someone was a quicker runner then others they would hold the spot for themselves and 10+ other people. We were able to secure a spot and basically just ended up sitting on the ground on blankets until the venue opened doors. The whole experience waiting all day was probably one of my most memorable experiences. I met some of my best friends in the whole world in this line and continued to go to many other shows with them. Believe it or not the March Michigan weather was nice enough to us, it was sunny and warm enough people were comfortable waiting throughout the whole day. (Even though when the concert was over at 11pm it was full blown blizzarding outside). The venue was not organized in the sense of people getting to their spots in line. But this venue did do security/tickets very smoothly and the way most fans would prefer. Only four security checkpoints when you entered the doors and your ticket was immediately scanned after, then you were in the venue where you could walk onto the floor. There were two separate doors, one for Sammy’s side and Jake’s side (North and South doors). My friends and I were probably within the first 50 people on Sammy’s side and even though we did not get barricade we were directly in the second row.

The Merchandise

About an hour before the doors opened letting in people waiting for GA, Greta’s Merch team set up multiple tents outside the venue where people were able to purchase merchandise before going into the show. When you got inside the venue they also had multiple other tables where they were selling merch. Greta’s merch is very fun giving a wide range of t-shirts, sweatshirts and other items such as posters, necklaces and scarves. They were also selling the other performers merch. One thing we learned at the first DIG show was that GVF was selling not only tour posters but specific concert date posters designed by local artists. If you were not able to purchase one of these signed artists posters at the show, they released a link (12pm) the next day with 200 more signed artist posters. Also giving fans the option to buy a non-signed artist poster for a discounted price. I was able to get a tour poster and also a signed artist poster online the following day. If you wanted to meet the first opener The Velveteers after they performed, they tend to hangout at the Merch booths selling and meeting fans!

The Openers

Speaking of the openers! I LOVED the openers for the first leg of the DIG tour. The first openers are The Velveteers, they are a rock trio band from Boulder, CO! The band consists of guitarist/lead singer Demi Demitro, guitarist/drummer Johnny Fig and drummer Baby Pottersmith. It is extremely amazing and liberating to see a female lead singer and guitarist absolutely put on a breathtaking rock performance. Along with double drummers for a majority of their songs it is almost impossible to not love The Velveteers. They bring such a badass, confident, want to headband your hair off performance. My favorite song off their debut album is probably Motel #27 along with their most listened to song the Charmer and the Snake.

Secondly we have the band The Rival Sons. The Rival Sons formed in 2009 in Long Beach, California. They are joined by lead singer Jay Buchanan, lead guitarist Scott Holiday, bassist Dave Beste and drummer Michael Miley. They are also frequently joined by Todd Ögren keyboard player. Being raised by my rock father, I had heard of a handful of their music before seeing them open for Greta Van Fleet. After watching them perform live I became an avid fan and listener. My favorite song is Nobody Wants to Die which is their newest single released this past October. Scott Holiday is an amazing guitarist always showcasing his skills and large guitar collection throughout the set. Along with great vocals and overall great stage presence, always talking to the fans which I loved and I will continue to see this band in the future.

The Performance

It is no new information that Greta Van Fleet puts on an amazing show, but this show being the first show of the Dreams in Gold tour I had no idea what to expect having been to previous concerts in years past. I also knew the atmosphere was going to be a little different due to the increase of fans over the past couple months. Before the show, the crew puts up a big black curtain (which later debuts with symbols from their album The Battle at Gardens Gate) so they can change sets for Greta. Once the curtain drops, the stage is set up with futuristic almost apocalyptic and also heavenly structures paired with white equipment boxes, amazing panels of lights, a silver/white backdrop and a large white rug on the stage. The show also has pyrotechnics that increases and enhances the music and the overall performance.The band opened with the song Heat Above, which to my knowledge was the only show which opened with their first song on TBAGG. Opening with this song, truly made you feel like you were ascending into heaven and were about to commence on a musical journey with everyone in the arena.

During Safari Song, I compulsively decided to throw my bedazzled hat on stage to where Sam, the bassist of the group, decided to put it on and play the rest of the song as a cowboy. This is why I am now known as the cowboy hat girl and continue to make hats for the rest of the GVF shows I attend and throw them on stage for Sam.

This DIG show was a little different then the others regarding the set list, I think because it was the first show of the tour. They typically have a rotation of the same songs now, occasionally changing it up. Some of the songs they don’t play as often now in this tour include Trip the Light Fantastic, Watching Over and May Way, Soon. Personally, one of my favorite songs performed live is Light My Love along with The Weight of Dreams. Light My Love is one of my favorites live because not only is this song a fan favorite but the stage lights up in the most beautiful rainbow colors. I think this song is important to a lot of people and really brings together every soul in 4 minutes and 29 seconds. It’s almost impossible to put into words the whole show GVF puts on because every show I have been to has been extremely different even though they play very similar setlists. The boys tend to play different riffs, interlude songs and interact with the crowd differently at each show. The lead singer Josh always takes a shot with some of the people in the crowd and eventually (later on in the tour) starts to sit on security's shoulders to hand out white roses to fans.

The Atmosphere

I would rank it a 9/10 only because where I was standing in the crowd, I was standing on the “lip” of the barricade on the ground, my legs and knees were extremely sore the next day. As for the rest of my surroundings, I was surrounded by very nice and kind people. I made many friends with the people around me in GA and had great conversations about all things. The security from my experience was average and gave people water or provided aid when asked/needed. As for the Venue itself, Wings Event Center is a small local hockey arena that also hosts lots of other events. I think it was a perfectly sized venue for a concert of this size. Small enough as to where anywhere you are seated in the venue it feels intimate but big enough to host a larger group of people. I do wish the concourse was a little bit bigger only because trying to leave the venue took a little bit longer than normal because of the capacity of people trying to leave in a small hallway.

Post-Show

This show was one of my top 5 best concerts I have ever been to (right now). The venue was a great size, the show itself was life changing and it felt like such an intimate show. I believe that all of these factors mentioned above really make or break how you experience an event. Greta Van Fleet is one of my favorite artists and has been for years. Every time I see them no matter where I am in GA on the floor or even having seated tickets (in the past) they always put on a great memorable performance. I would recommend getting a chance to see them if you have not had the opportunity to do so yet. When Amazon released its trailer for The Rings of Power, many Tolkien fans expressed negative reactions ranging from anger to disgust to disappointment. The important part is why, and this is what news coverage of the backlash has so far failed to report fully. 

The way that news stories have portrayed fan reactions to The Rings of Power—framing them as a conflict primarily between those who support diversity in the show and those who don’t—obscures Amazon’s own problems of racism and discrimination, as well as the real reasons many fans are unhappy about this adaptation.

First, to discuss what the news has covered about the backlash: some of the people criticizing Amazon’s show are complaining about it because they oppose diverse casting. But Tolkien never stated that certain characters had to be white, and even if he had, a diverse cast would still be the right choice. Some people argue that Middle-earth is a sort of fantasy Europe, but Europe itself has never been 100% white. And I think it’s important to point out that many Tolkien experts and fans agree that a diverse portrayal of Middle-earth is in fact fully consistent with canon—and must include casting people of color as the heroes.

The problem is that news coverage has largely conflated any criticism of The Rings of Power with racism against its cast, setting up Amazon as a defender of diversity and inclusion, and obscuring its track record of racism and other forms of discrimination.

Amazon has been found to systematically discriminate against Black employees, female employees, and especially Black women, denying them promotions and failing to address a toxic work environment where racist and sexist comments and harassment go unchecked. Since 2008, and as recently as 2020, Amazon has also profited off of anti-Semitic merchandise and books that promote Holocaust denial. Casting actors of color and emphasizing Galadriel’s role in the show does not negate any of this. Amazon is selling the aesthetic of diversity and inclusion in a fantasy world while remaining hostile to it in reality.

What the news coverage has missed is that most Tolkien fans criticizing The Rings of Power are not against diversity in Middle-earth, and are criticizing the show for other reasons. I can’t speak for everyone, but I can speak for myself, my friends, and the people who I interact with regularly in the fan community. Here are some things that many Tolkien fans are actually upset about:

We’re upset that Amazon is behind this project. Amazon is an unethical company that mistreats its workers, hoards its wealth, contributes to climate change, and is responsible for so many other terrible things. Many fans would have been happy to see Middle-earth brought back to the screen by another company, but not Amazon. We are not happy that Tolkien’s beloved stories are being shamelessly commercialized by one of the greediest men in the world. When Jeff Bezos announced the name of The Rings of Power on Twitter, many LOTR fans fittingly compared him to Sauron. Amazon’s destruction of nature, abuses of power, greed and prejudice are directly opposite to what Tolkien himself stood for.

And we’re upset that the show-runners have been so disrespectful to the creator of Middle-earth, arrogantly calling their show “the novel Tolkien never wrote.” This was not a one-off statement, either; they said this twice, and they also said they envision the title of their own show “on the spine of a book next to J.R.R. Tolkien’s other classics.” The egotism of these statements is disgusting, not to mention laughable—Tolkien spent over a decade writing LOTR, and most of his life writing The Silmarillion, so it is absurd that these men—neither of whom is a published author—think they can rival him.

…Especially when they have already mangled Tolkien’s canon. Most people accept that adaptations make changes to the source material, but there have to be good reasons behind the changes. The Rings of Power is making Elrond “politically ambitious” even though that is not how he is characterized in the books. The show also has Elves with closely-cropped short hair and Dwarf women without beards. These changes—and many others that the show has already made—might seem like unimportant details to non-Tolkien fans, but to many of us, this shows that Amazon cannot even get the basics right of Tolkien’s worldbuilding and characters.

Then, Amazon is also making broader, more earth-shaking changes, like compressing the entire timeline of the Second Age. While Peter Jackson made some changes to canon, they were largely omissions (like of the Scouring of the Shire), or changes to specific events (like having Arwen, instead of Glorfindel, rescue Frodo), but they didn’t tear at the very fabric of Middle-earth’s reality. Not so with Amazon. The Second Age is over three thousand years long; compressing the timeline will inevitably create problems for major events of the time period, like the rise and fall of Númenor.

Some Tolkien fans are also questioning Amazon’s casting choices, not because we’re anti-diversity, but because the diverse casting doesn’t go far enough. Amazon could have cast actors of color as canon characters like Celebrimbor or Gil-galad, instead of in roles made up for the show. Casting people of color as existing characters would better guarantee them screentime and narrative importance, whereas newly-invented characters are easier to push to the sidelines. Amazon also could have done much more for representation for many groups not represented in the current cast.

And then there’s the ageism and sexism. Galadriel is played by a 32-year-old actor, but Celebrimbor—her younger cousin—is played by a 52-year-old actor. This is not a criticism of the actors themselves; it is pointing out the double standard of casting a young woman to play an older character, and a middle-aged man to play a younger character; if one of them should be played by a visibly older actor, it’s Galadriel. Movies and TV still have a huge gender and age problem, where women are always expected to look young and there are fewer roles for older actresses, while the same issue does not affect men.

Add to all of this the bad aesthetics: the overuse of CGI, the generic-looking costumes, the weird-looking prosthetic ears… Many fans are astounded that with Amazon’s budget, this is the best they could do. And last but not least—showing how The Rings of Power is just a microcosm of Amazon’s unethical labor practices—there is the fact that, during filming in New Zealand, multiple stunt workers were injured on set after their concerns about safety were not taken seriously. One stunt worker suffered a head injury, and another suffered an unknown injury that required surgery. After the accidents occurred, Amazon failed to disclose them to WorkSafe, New Zealand’s workplace health and safety regulator, which requires companies to notify it if an employee has an injury requiring hospitalization. Of course, Amazon cares more about its reputation than about worker safety, and tried to keep the injuries quiet.

All these things are related to each other. This is all happening because Amazon is a greedy corporation only in this to make money. Of course they are willing ignore the canon of Tolkien’s books to churn out a bland Game of Thrones knock-off. Of course the show’s attempt at diversity falls short; this company systematically discriminates against women and people of color. Of course the show is a soulless cash-grab; the people running it don’t even care about the safety of their own workers.

The bottom line is, Tolkien fans have many reasons for criticizing The Rings of Power that have nothing to do with opposing diversity. And yet, most news outlets that have covered the fan response to the recent trailer have focused exclusively on the racist backlash. By neatly framing criticism of The Rings of Power as coming solely from anti-diversity trolls, news outlets have missed what is really happening, and have helped Amazon polish its reputation—something The Rings of Power is surely designed, in part, to accomplish, since in recent years Amazon has received so much bad press. That is to say: Amazon desperately wants to improve its image, and could do so with a hugely popular TV show, especially one with the name recognition of LOTR.

I hope that Tolkien fans don’t let that happen.
