I disagree with the idea that basil is unforgivable because the entire point of Omori is forgiveness and grief.
To say that basil is irredeemable is to go against the theme of the game
homie...
hate to break it to you but actually the point of the game being forgiveness and grief doesn't mean that every character should be forgiven. everybody has different standards and morals and values when it comes to forgiveness. some people are able to forgive basil and others aren't, but the people who are able to forgive aren't inherently better or more "right" than the people who cannot. to say that the message of omori is "you should always forgive people no matter what they do to you" is brain-dead.
just because sunny and basil smiled at each other doesn't mean that all that damage was reversed, or that true forgiveness even happened.
the point of omori is not forgiving others.
it's forgiving YOURSELF.
that's why aubrey, kel, and hero's explicit reactions to the truth weren't shown in the game. because it's not supposed to be canon that they forgave sunny and basil. and the lesson is NOT that kel, aubrey, and hero SHOULD forgive sunny and basil.
it's easy for sunny and basil to forgive each other because they both royally fucked up each other and their friends.
what's not easy is kel, hero, and aubrey forgiving them because unlike sunny and basil, they had ZERO CHOICE in the matter when it came to the presentation of mari's death. they spent four years living a lie.
hero blamed himself, believing that he was a horrible boyfriend who caused mari's death by not being there for her and he was extremely depressed for years, which caused him to lose motivation for his number one favorite thing to do:
cook. as a result of hero's depression, kel was pushed aside and ignored by his parents, becoming something like a glass child to them, which led to him viewing himself as less important or worthy of love/attention than hero.
and don't even get me started on aubrey. the whole town turned against her, and nobody cared about her. not even her friends. the only person in the world who truly understood her was mari, and seeing her hung was the worst possible thing to happen to aubrey, a mentally ill little girl who already believed she was bad for everyone who cared about her.
if basil had JUST TOLD THE TRUTH. all of his friends' lives would have been infinitely better.
and i don't mean to like rag on basil without addressing sunny, but i never see sunny stans acting this idiotic and "holier-than-thou". now since you're so up in my business, i will explain myself more.
the biggest unforgiveable thing isn't even basil hanging mari. it's basil blatantly lying, and staying silent for four years, pretending to be innocent, painting himself as some victim, when really, the whole time, he was the reason why everything crumbled and destroyed itself.
it would be fucking stupid to walk out of playing that game saying, "well, aubrey, kel, and hero need to forgive basil for what he did because forgiveness is important."
that's easy for BASIL LOVERS to say because BASIL WAS NOT THE VICTIM IN THE SITUATION. HE WAS THE PERPETRATOR.
and furthermore, the game emphasizes self-forgiveness way more than forgiving others.
things only started to get better for basil and sunny when they started to forgive themselves. sunny's hallucinations were a manifestation of his shame and guilt. and shame and guilt are a result of being unable to forgive yourself. what the other characters did to support sunny was helpful, but it didn't solve the root of the problem. the only thing that really made something go away, the only thing that really brought color back to sunny's world was him letting go of that shame and guilt and allowing himself to keep going forward.
THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE GAME IS THIS: you cannot control how others react/respond to your bad actions. you cannot expect forgiveness out of anyone, and sometimes, you SHOULDNT. but the one thing you can control when you fuck up is how you pick yourself up and dust yourself off. how YOU move on from what you did so that you can grow and become a better person in the future.
and to me, that is a way more relevant, impactful, and TRUE message than the stupid, idiotic, honestly super problematic idea that "we should forgive and forget when people hurt us because they feel guilty". that's not being a good person. that's being spineless and devoid of values. just because i personally have experiences, traumas, and values that make me unable to truly forgive basil doesn't make me a bad person or someone who failed to understand the game's message. so before you come up in my ask box and attempt to shame me and accuse me of not understanding the game, brush up on it yourself, buddy.

Some info on the Snipe spinoff.
Screenplay by Minato Takano (高野水登); Directed by Nobuhiro Suzumura (鈴村展弘) with Takeshi Miyazaki (宮崎剛) as action director; Produced by Atsushi Yamaguchi (山口敦規) from Toei Video and Takahito Omori (on the show) from Toei. Takano, Suzumura and Miyazaki are all involved with the Brave spinoff as well.
The cast revealed so far includes Taiga, Kuroto, Asuna, Parado, Graphite, Hiro's girlfriend Saki, and a new character named Jiro Maki (牧治郎) played by Masaki Kaji (加治将樹). May be getting the new character's name wrong.
The story takes place 5 years ago, when Taiga Hanaya was a radiologist at Seito University Hospital. He discovers the Bugster Virus hidden within a girl's body, and soon after Dan Kuroto comes forth scouting this prodigal doctor so that he may become a Kamen Rider. However, with his work as a doctor taking priority, he initially refuses the offer. A friend of Taiga's - a pathologist named Jiro Maki - volunteers in his place, but mysteriously goes missing... This spinoff promises to reveal the reasons behind Taiga's ego, and why he was chosen before anyone else.
As was previously covered, the spinoff is a four-part thing which will be told across the four blu-ray releases for the show, so they'll be pretty spread apart. Based on previous blu-ray exclusive stories for Drive and Ghost, they may make use of where the show on TV is at the time, meaning there will at least be a good reason to space it out.
The first blu-ray collection will be out on April 12th, with the second on July 12th.

“basil wasn’t a bad person he just did bad things that doesn’t make him a bad person tho! but aubrey is a bitch and a bully and she has no excuse for what she did.” DO YOU REALIZE HOW STUPID YOU SOUND.
“basil was twelve he didn’t know any better he was just trying to protect sunny! but it doesn’t matter that aubrey bullied basil to protect herself and her friends from the damage that BASIL ACTED LIKE HE CAUSED!” how was aubrey supposed to know basil lied? it was basils own fault for saying he did something that he knew would make aubrey mad!
you CANNOT whine about how basil should never be criticized ever because he has reasons for what he did and he wasn’t fully in the wrong and blah blah blah and then condemn and demonize aubrey when she was in an extremely similar situation EXCEPT SHE HANDLED IT WAY FUCKING BETTER THAN BASIL despite having NO adult role models and NO place of true safety except for with the hooligans.
if you’re going to defend basil to the death i better see you doing the SAME DAMN THING to aubrey or else you hate women and i hate you and you don’t get omori.

rating the omori characters by how stinky i think they are
(don't get mad at this, it's just a joke! also 10 is super stinky, and 0 is not stinky at all. also this isn't meant to shame anybody's habits, although i do think the whole "white people don't wash their ass" thing is really funny and unfortunately true)
sunny -> 10/10. this guy has not showered in weeks. it isn't just a depression thing, he just doesn't like it. the water is always either too hot or too cold, and the shower floor always feels too grimy beneath his feet, and the smells of all the different soaps make his head hurt. he just struggles with the sensory side of it too. and he thinks about how mari used to help bathe him when he was little, and it's just too bitter.
basil -> 9/10. i think he showers more often than sunny does, but definitely not enough. he's also one of those "all natural" bitches who uses crystal deodorant (nasty) and washes his hair like once a year. also he's probably never washed his ass or used a washcloth in his life...sorry gang i'm just dropping truth here you've seen how white both he and his guardian is.
aubrey -> 7.5/10. see here's the thing: aubrey is a teenage girl. she's going to be extremely insecure about stanking, but considering her home situation, it's very hard for her to be smelling fresh. she has to steal money in order to buy basic things like deodorant and soap, and the water is never on at her house consistently, and the bathroom is just disgusting. so she's stinkier than she wants to be, but it can't really be helped. usually, she just sneaks a shower after school in the locker rooms, though that isn't possible during summer vacation and such.
kel -> 5/10. i was going to make him stinkier because he's just always on the move, always playing sports, so he's always sweaty, but i think kel would have a pretty decent shower schedule to wash all that off, especially because he looks up to hero. and he shares a room with hero, and hero definitely WOULD NOT let kel stank up the whole bedroom with his stench. so i think kel would be mildly stinky, but he showers enough that it's decently mitigated. also he likes to steal hero's products sometimes.
hero -> 0/10. this man does not stink whatsoever. he cares so much about hygiene, he's that guy who brushes his teeth after every single meal/snack, he has like seven different products that he uses in the shower, and he'll stand in the steamy hot water for an hour. it's a form of self-care! he was also the one (alongside mari) who taught the others in the group how to shower properly, though they don't always listen to him (especially the white ones LMAO). he's constantly telling them that they actually do need to wash their asses and that a washcloth is actually an essential and they have to scrub their legs and feet because the soapy water running down them is not enough.
mari -> -100/10. it's physically impossible for mari to stink. not only does she have a lot of similar habits to hero, but she got the asian gene that makes her not have body odor, and she has a tiny little perfume collection that she uses regularly whenever she goes out, which means that she's always radiating a gentle scent of flowers or vanilla. her favorite scent is jasmine, and sometimes, she sprays it in sunny's stinky room when he isn't there.

also because this is interesting here are the mental disorders i think each omori character has based on my experiences with them:
(this is just for fun! i’m not an expert diagnoser i’m just someone with a lot of mental illness who had to take that long ass test like 200 times)
sunny -> depression, gad, hallucinations, maladaptive daydreaming (i know headspace is technically his dreams at night LOLLL but considering the escapism aspect i think this is still the right term for it?).
aubrey -> social anxiety (developed later in life), autism, anger issues.
kel -> adhd (i also think he has a bit of an inferiority complex but i don’t think it’s severe enough to be considered a part of the list).
mari -> gad, and there isn’t really an official name for this but i think she struggles a lot with being a parentified older sister.
hero -> extreme gad, autism, depression (developed later in life).
basil -> hallucinations, gad, social anxiety, depression, anger issues.
(also since i know some of y’all are gonna say it, DO NOT reblog this and say “oh aubrey has bpd, not autism!” or “aubrey doesn’t have social anxiety!” or “mari doesn’t have generalized anxiety!”. shut up. as an afab person who’s seen regular misdiagnoses, i know what i’m talking about when it comes to common misdiagnoses. y’all misogynistic idiots love to slap bpd on a girl just because she’s angry sometimes. y’all love to deny that girls have anxiety because it doesn’t present as them stammering and running away from everything. so think before you speak. this post isn’t an invitation for medical misogyny.)

mari was just a kid too. she didn’t deserve to fucking die and have her dead body disrespected to the point where it ruined her boyfriend and best friends’ lives. they were ALL just kids. and what basil did fucked these KIDS up.
so womp womp. i don’t really care that basil was just a kid. it’s the fact that every single thing he did from hanging mari to staying silent for four years to pretending to be a victim was a CHOICE.
you know who didn’t get a choice? fucking mari.
so yeah. kid or not, basil had a choice. and they were ALL kids. it’s an even playing field here. and aubrey and kel, despite being KIDS, still are much better people than basil. they didn’t have nearly as much choice as basil, but with the choice they had, they chose to do the right thing most of the time and when they didn’t, they OWNED UP AND APOLOGIZED. wow, what a concept. couldn’t be basil.
and don’t even pull the mental illness card either cuz it’s obvious that all of the main six have some sort of mental illness going on. also since when is mental illness a good excuse for someone framing a suicide? do you know how absolutely wild some of y’all sound??
(and just so y’all don’t send me death threats i DONT THINK BASIL IS EVIL. he’s a really cool character whose contribution to the narrative is amazing. he is just irredeemable in my eyes and the people who constantly try to defend him with these shitty excuses annoy the fuck out of me. he’s a bad person. Bonus thought about the church: it's where Mari's funeral was held. Aubrey would've last seen Mari at the front in her coffin. Aubrey's safe space is Mari's final resting place :')

i actually cannot that is so insane.
every piece of aubrey, every single part of her, is still tied to mari. i think people tend to forget how much mari meant to aubrey. yes, she was sunny's biological sister and yes she was hero's boyfriend, and those relationships are extremely important too.
but mari was aubrey's REAL FAMILY. mari was the one who understood aubrey more than anyone, mari was aubrey's safe space. it wasn't aubrey's parents who comforted her when she cried, or told her funny jokes, or accompanied her for lunch at the park. it was MARI.
mari cared for aubrey, defended her when she needed it, scolded her when she needed it.
and you can see even in the present day how much of mari aubrey clings onto. the PINK HAIR in order to mirror mari's plan for purple hair. the whole thing with the photos. and like you said, the CHURCH. it's all attached to mari because the one person aubrey desperately needed more than anyone after mari's death was mari herself.
after all, after mari was gone, everyone else abandoned her. the entire TOWN abandoned her.
maybe aubrey secretly wondered if going to church would feel like mari protecting her again.

Hey! I know you don't like Basil (That's totally fine i don't really care but he's personally my fav) and reading your posts and the reasons you don't like him, you would probably like his beta version 10000% better. His name was Rowan and he is like Basil but with a spine. He was more like Aubrey with a strong set of core values (I don't know much about him and I don't know if he helped Sunny too, like in the final game) but what I do know is that when Sunny locked himself away Rowan felt very angry, sad, and betrayed that his best friend cut him out of his life when they promised they'd always be with each other. Like I said, Rowan was a bit more edgy than Basil and was more like Rowan. There was also flower, from OMORIBOY, I don't know much about Flower tho.

every time i see a post about how “poor basil was bullied by aubrey” it makes me so mad.
like, aubrey is the real victim here.
i don’t agree with everything she did but she’s not a bully whatsoever.
aubrey isn’t thoughtlessly mean, she doesn’t enjoy hurting people!
she just wants to be left alone and basil won’t accept that even though he ruined her life and abandoned her when she needed a friend most.
and she literally SAW mari’s face crossed out with black. i know basil didn’t do it but in aubrey’s situation and state of mind it made perfect sense to assume. it looked like basil was trying to erase the memory of the only person in the world who GOT her and loved her in a girlhood way.
if y’all seriously think aubrey is a cruel bully then you don’t get her.
either that or youre a hypocrite and you hate women.
aubrey is so much more than the caricature that the town made her out to be, she’s a little girl in pain
she lost the only person in the whole world who truly and fully understood her
and while everybody else had a support system like parents or caregivers or even just friends, aubrey was ALL. ALONE.
of course she turned to people who she knew wouldn’t abandon her! of course she did whatever she could to keep herself safe and sane! she’s learned by now that nobody on earth is gonna do it for her, not even the people she considered friends.
and she literally GROVELS to basil after the fact. she feels SO GUILTY. y’all constantly love to rant and rave about how “oh basil did bad things but it’s okay because he was just a kid and he feels really guilty about it.” AUBREY IS JUST A KID. SHE FEELS GUILTY ABOUT IT. where’s that energy, motherfuckers? oh wait. she’s a girl. so she won’t get any sympathy from you fucking nasties.
tl;dr: aubrey didn’t do anymore wrong than basil did (in fact she did WAY less wrong) so i don’t get why she gets scrutinized so much while basil gets off scott free. oh wait i do know. cuz basil is a fucking boy and aubrey is a girl. stupid ass fandom.

a snippet from the first chapter of my loyal au fic
(if you don't know the background of this au, here's the post detailing it: loyal au)
Splayed out on his bed, Kel looked up at the ceiling, smiling and laughing breathlessly. When it came to pillow fights, Basil was much more feisty than he seemed. There was something about flying feathers and soft surfaces that seemed to entice Basil's competitive side. And honestly, Kel enjoyed it. It was nice to see the real Basil, and not the shy, bland persona that he often wore in front of people who he didn't trust to see his true self. Kel almost felt honored that he was part of the "secret club" that had access to this Basil. The Basil who wasn't the most perfect, morally-aligned human of all time.
Well, maybe that title should go to Mari. After all, Kel thought, nobody could top her when it came to goodness.
The silence that hung in the air was comfortable. There was no sound except for the odd sigh as Kel and Basil caught their breaths, recovering from their battle.
But out of the blue, Basil broke the silence in a way that crushed the comfort in such a way that Kel's heart seized.
"I wish Sunny was here."
Though his words were quiet, his sentiment was not. Kel was shocked, laughing softly to hide how he flinched as Basil spoke in his typical soft, kind tone.
"It feels so empty when he's not around during these things."
What, so me being here doesn't matter?
Kel shook his head, biting his lip harshly so he wouldn't say what he had been thinking so loudly. Though he had a tendency to speak without thinking, something about Basil's presence placated him in a way that didn't really feel natural. Maybe since Basil was so good, Kel felt pressured to be good as well. It was a good thing, Kel thought. Even if his true thoughts sometimes had to go unsaid.
After all, Basil hadn't meant anything bad by it. Basil was a good friend.
"If you're bored, we could play a game or something," Kel suggested, staring at the medals and awards that gleamed on the other side of the bedroom wall. Hero's side.
What would Hero do in this type of situation? What would he say?
"Maybe we could even play basketball outside! It stopped raining while we were pillow fighting!"
Basil winced, chuckling awkwardly, and Kel wanted to groan. That was probably the most un-Hero-like thing Kel could have possibly said. Why was he so bad at emulating the person he shared the world with since birth? Why couldn't he be as good at this as Hero? Did Hero have to be better than him at everything?
"Sorry, I'm a bit tired," Basil said, "How do you...always have so much energy, Kel? I'm surprised you aren't exhausted by now."
Exhausted? Kel couldn't help but ask himself, or exhausting?
Did Basil really want to be here? Kel could see Basil shifting slightly in the bed, looking around the room with a resigned dullness behind his eyes that almost reminded Kel of Sunny. This never happened when Sunny was around.
"I'm tired too," Kel decided to say.
No he wasn't. But the way Basil smiled, as if maybe, for once, Kel had said the right thing, made Kel have trouble regretting his lie. If it was for the greater good, how bad could a lie possibly be?
