Anime Feminist Recommendations of Fall 2023
We close out another Fall with something for just about everyone, from superheroes to work rom-coms to conspiracy thrillers.
How did we choose our recs?
Participating staff members can nominate up to three titles and can also co-sign other nominated shows. Rather than categorizing titles as “feminist-friendly” or “problematic,” they are simply listed in alphabetical order with relevant content warnings; doing otherwise ran the risk of folks seeing these staff recommendations as rubber stamps of unilateral “Feminist Approval,” which is something we try our hardest to avoid here.
The titles below are organized alphabetically. As a reminder, ongoing shows are NOT eligible for these lists. We’d rather wait until the series (or season) has finished up before recommending it to others, that way we can give you a more complete picture. This means we also leave out any unfinished split-cour shows, which we define as shows that air their second half within a year of the first.
Here’s what the team thought—let us know your picks in the comments!

we didnt get to see them as adults in otona precure '23, so i made my own headcanon designs for nagisa, honoka, and hikari as adults! based on the dialogue we get in the anime, it seems like nagisa and honoka are doing some kind of work in environmental conservation, and i imagine they work for the same organization, but at different branches. as for hikari, i imagine she does something that involves people, like a nurse or teacher, and still helps out at akanes takoyaki stand :)

While it’s neat that we have two PreCure shows right now, I do have a few issues with the new one.
Admittedly the first is less an issue with the show and more with Crunchyroll itself. Specifically it’s a little hard to get into the “where they are now” material when I have no idea who these women are. Why haven’t they picked up Yes! Pretty Cure 5? The only way I can get context here is piracy. I don’t think that’s what Crunchyroll wants to encourage, but that is what they’re doing here.
The second complaint is far more minor, but I am disappointed that rather than updating the PreCure designs for their current age they actually regressed Dream so they could use the old version (I assume anyway, because again I can’t watch the old version). Which could be neat if they were going to do anything with that, but at first glance this seems doubtful, so it’s just coming across as lazy.
And finally… seriously, you’re “tsk tsk”ing convenience store employees for following the health code?! Normally I’m supportive of environmental concerns but that’s just facepalming stupidity. Do you think stores want to throw food away? No! They want to sell it! But after a certain point that becomes more and more potentially hazardous. Those regulations exist for a reason you blithering imbeciles!

How did I just find out that the first ever precure anime I ever watch—which got me obsessed with the whole franchise for +5 years, had me binge every single season and is the anime that got me into writing fanfics and my own stories—started airing a sequel Yesterday with the characters AS ADULTS!!!!!
