Take a few days off, Kouyou insisted him to stay off from Yokohama for a few days so he could rest up after so many days of lack of proper sleep and endless paperwork to make, of course it took a lot of Chuuya’s powerwill to accept her suggestion after his own boss ordered him to take a week away from Port Mafia’s businesses.

So there here was now, in an hotel in Tokyo. He hasn't left yokohama in months, last time was when he was ordered to investigate in the west but that was in the past. MENGAPA KITA SUKA MENUNDA?

“Hi, deadliners!!”

Di pekan awal bulan Januari, biasanya orang berbondong-bondong menuliskan resolusi tahun baru mereka. Isinya kurang lebih ya harapan-harapan baik mereka seperti target-target studi dan prestasi, rencana memulai usaha atau mengembangkan bisnis, rencana liburan, menikah, atau lain sebagainya. Saya berani bertaruh, resolusi yang dituliskan tersebut bukan sama sekali baru melainkan revisi dari resolusi tahun sebelumnya yang belum sepenuhnya tuntas tercapai.

“Kira-kira apa yang menyebabkan resolusi kita banyak yang tidak tercapai?”, tanya seorang kawan.

Waktu itu saya coba bantu menjawab berdasar apa yang kebetulan sedang saya pelajari. Kurang lebih ada tiga poin yang mempengaruhi kinerja masing-masing individu dalam upaya mencapai sebuah life goal, yakni menunda (Procrastinating), target yang bukan menjadi prioritas (unpriority goal), serta persoalan manajemen waktu dan emosi (time and emotion management problem). Nah, biasanya di bagian emotion management itu orang terjebak pada penulisan resolusi yang tidak realistis. Saking semangatnya hingga lupa mengukur diri. Kawan lain menambahkan poin mengenai bad maintenance, weak powerwill, dan unclear goals.

Dalam tulisan kali ini, saya cenderung fokus mengangkat bahasan tentang ‘menunda’ (Procrastinating). Mengapa? Sebab tanpa kita sadari, ‘menunda’ adalah penyakit paling berbahaya yang sering menjangkiti tubuh kita. Tidak membuat sakit memang (mungkin belakangan), tapi perlahan mengubah perjalanan hidup kita ke arah yang tidak kita harapkan sebelumnya.

Cara menarik untuk memahami situasi “hobi menunda” disampaikan dengan apik oleh Tim Urban dalam sebuah TED Talk. Tim cuma seorang pemalas, tapi kebetulan juga ia seorang jenius.

Menurut Tim, orang normal biasanya membagi waktu mereka untuk sebuah tugas agar tidak keteteran dalam pengerjaannya, dan berakhir dengan hasil yang sempurna. Dalam kasus dunia kampus, skripsi bisa menjadi contoh paling menarik. Pola rencana pengerjaan, biasanya dimulai dengan yang ringan untuk minggu-minggu pertama, lalu beranjak sedikit lebih serius di waktu pertengahan, dan menuntaskan lebih giat lagi di sisa waktu yang memang sedari awal sudah disediakan. Dengan demikian, skripsi kita akan selesai dengan apik dan tepat waktu.

Tim pun pernah berniat melakukan hal serupa, tapi entah mengapa waktu-waktu di awal berlalu begitu saja tanpa ada sedikitpun bagian dari skripsi yang tersentuh. Fase pertengahan pun demikian, tak sadar terlalu sibuk berselancar di Wikipedia dan YouTube. Hingga tersisa tiga hari lagi, pikiran Tim merasa terhantui bukan main dan barulah saat itu juga ia mulai mengerjakan skripsi dengan amat sangat serius.

72 jam begadang untuk 90 halaman skripsi. Bergegas ia mengumpulkannya ke dosen, dan tinggal menunggu kabar. Seminggu kemudian, Tim mendapat telepon.

“Tim, we need to talk about your thesis.”

“… oke …” jawab Tim ketakutan, menebak-nebak kemungkinan buruk pada kalimat berikutnya.

“This, the best one I ever seen!”

“…”

Tim diam sejenak, memainkan alis matanya isyarat menyombongkan diri di hadapan para hadirin TED Talk. Semua orang tertawa dan mengapresiasinya dengan tepuk tangan yang meriah. Hadirin tentu salut dan kagum. Siapa sangka Tim seorang jenius.

Di tengah-tengah perhatian hadirin yang telah tercuri, Tim mengeluarkan punchline-nya.

“That did not happen to me!” canda Tim kepada para hadirin.

Benar-benar meledakkan suasana. Semua orang kini tertawa lebih keras, dan bertepuk tangan lebih kencang. Tim benar-benar seorang jenius!

[Apa Yang Sebenarnya Sedang Terjadi?] Saya yakin kita semua masih sering melakukan penundaan seperti apa yang Tim lakukan. Di sinilah sebenarnya letak permasalahan mengapa kita dijuluki deadliners, adalah karena penundaan-penundaan yang kita lakukan.

Tim berhasil meneliti (dengan caranya sendiri) perbedaan isi otak seorang normal dengan seorang penunda (procrstinator). Diilustrasikan, di dalam otak seorang normal ada tokoh yang dijuluki ’Si Pembuat Keputusan Logis’, bertugas mengendalikan kemudi pikiran. Dialah sosok yang mengarahkan jiwa raga kita untuk selalu bertindak benar dan produktif di jalan yang lurus. Di otak seorang procrastinator, tokoh tersebut tidak hidup sendirian. Ia di dampingi oleh Instant Gratification Monkey atau si monyet yang menyukai zona asik dan mudah (fun and easy zone) yang kerap kali merebut kemudi karena tidak menyukai pekerjaan membosankan seperti skripsi, untuk itu ia mengarahkannya ke taman bermain. The Dark Playground.

Di taman inilah orang-orang biasanya terlena untuk sejenak beristirahat, membaca buku, berselancar di internet, bermain sebentar dengan hewan peliharaannya, atau menggibah asik bersama kawan, atau aktivitas apapun yang memang terkesan mudah dan menyenangkan. Padahal di saat yang sama, kita sadar bahwa kita punya tugas yang harus diselesaikan. Tapi monyet hanyalah seekor hewan. Di pikirannya, bermain atau bersenang-senang adalah kesuksesan terbesar dalam hidup. Sedangkan manusia hanyalah spesies lain, pikir si monyet yang tidak mengenal kejamnya dunia manusia tersebut. Manusia memikirkan masa depan, merencanakannya. Tapi si monyet, hanya peduli soal sekarang. Bermain dan bermain. Sekali lagi, kita masih terlena di taman, dan entah mengapa sulit sekali mengambil alih kemudi.

Tidak terasa, pagi berganti malam. Hari berganti minggu. Bulan berganti nama. Waktu semakin sempit mendekati deadline. Di titik inilah, di dalam otak seorang penunda, sebenarnya ada satu lagi sosok yang hidup bersama mereka. Ia adalah malaikat pelindung. Kemunculannya hanya di saat-saat deadline karena biasanya ia lebih sering tertidur. Ketika terusik dan terbangun, ia menjaga kita dari hal-hal yang tidak penting kepada yang penting. Dari sibuk bermain, untuk kembali mengerjakan skripsi. Malaikat tersebut dijuluki ‘The Panic Monster’ oleh Tim. Ia adalah monster tegas yang memaksa kita untuk kembali mengambil alih kemudi, melanjutkan tugas yang terlantarkan. Kali ini kemudi mudah diambil alih sebab si monyet ketakutan melihat monster lantas bersembunyi di atas pohon dengan cepat.

Akhirnya kita semua kembali mengerjakan tugas kita, tapi tentu dengan kondisi penuh tekanan sang monster. Dari yang sebelumnya sangat susah sekali membuat kalimat pembuka pada bab 'Latar Belakang’, kini tiba-tiba bisa menuntaskan lebih banyak bab dalam waktu sekejap. Pada situasi penuh tekanan ini, etos kerja kita meningkat. Sayangnya, meski tidak begitu diharapkan, sistem ini menjadi satu-satunya yang berhasil, dan seringnya begitu. Jika Anda pernah bertanya soal kekuatan apa yang menyebabkan orang mampu bekerja kilat di waktu yang sempit, situasi di atas adalah jawabannya. Tapi sampai kapan kita akan demikian?

[Menunda Tanpa Batas] Sebelum tampil di TED Talk, Tim sudah menulis tentang Procrastination sejak dua tahun sebelumnya. Berkat tulisannya, ribuan email masuk yang isinya kebanyakan adalah curhat. Tidak sedikit email datang dari para mahasiswa Phd. Walhasil, dari banyaknya konten yang hadir, Tim menemukan sesuatu. Bahwa ternyata ada dua tipe penundaan di dunia ini. Pertama, penundaan yang memiliki batas waktu, dan kedua adalah penundaan yang tidak memiliki batas waktu. Lebih tepatnya, kita tidak tahu di mana ujung batas waktunya.

Contoh bahasan skripsi di atas adalah jenis penundaan dengan batas waktu. Setidaknya kita masih bisa mengatasinya (menuntaskan skripsi kita) berkat bantuan 'The Panic Monster’. Selambat-lambatnya, di tahun terakhir kuliah adalah batas waktu yang tersedia. Tapi pada jenis penundaan yang kedua, tidak ada batas waktu yang sungguh-sungguh kita ketahui. Artinya, tidak akan ada kemunculan malaikat penolong alias 'The Panic Monster’ yang akan membantu kita.

Jenis penundaan yang kedua ini benar-benar membuat saya tertampar. Para hadirin di acara TED Talk juga terlihat hening. Semua memasang wajah serius, khusyuk mendengarkan satu cerita tentang rahasia dalam kehidupan.

Jika satu-satunya cara selamat dari jebakan penundaan adalah 'The Panic Monster’, maka itu adalah masalah. Sebab pada penundaan jenis kedua, ia tidak muncul, tidak ada kondisi yang membangunkannya. Batas waktunya pun bisa diperpanjang sampai kapanpun, atau selamanya.

Penundaan jenis kedua ini lebih jarang dibicarakan di publik, pun tidak sejenaka penundaan yang pertama. Tidak seperti skripsi. Penundaan kedua lebih bersifat pribadi dan senyap, bahkan justru mampu menjadi alasan terbesar ketidakbahagiaan dan penyesalan dalam hidup. Orang-orang resah tidak tahu cara memulai apa yang mereka inginkan sebab tidak ada tenggat waktunya.

Padahal, kebanyakan hal-hal penting berada dalam penundaan jenis kedua ini. Seperti karir, keluarga, kesehatan, dan kematian. Kapan kita akan benar-benar memulai bekerja untuk mengejar cita-cita kita menjadi seorang insinyur, dokter, atau mungkin pebisnis sukses, dimana kesemuanya tidak tertera dalam deadline kita? Menunda sampai kapan? Kapan kita menjadi apa? Tidak ada 'The Panic Monster’! Kita terjebak sebagai penonton dalam kehidupan kita sendiri!

Jika kematian adalah jenis penundaan pertama, di mana kita tahu kapan kita akan mati. Tentu akan terlihat pola kemaksiatan yang disusul dengan pertaubatan yang sebegitu rapihnya. Hidup bersenang-senang, mati jelas masuk Surga. Detik ini pun pola tersebut, dari dulu malah, memang sudah terbentuk. Tapi siapa bisa menjamin bahwa kita tidak akan mati dalam beberapa detik kedepan? Bagaimana kalau setelah membaca tulisan ini, kita mati. Tidak ada 'The Panic Monster’ yang sempat membujukmu bertaubat di detik-detik terakhir sebab ia tidak pernah keluar dalam penundaan ini. Bagaimana?

Saya pun percaya bahwa sesungguhnya semua orang di dunia memang suka atau setidaknya pernah menunda, dan sempat menyesal atau masih. Tapi apa yang sebaiknya kita lakukan? Hal yang perlu kita lakukan adalah mewaspadai si monyet nakal di dalam otak kita. Sosok yang menyeret kita ke dalam jebakan hidup. Sebab waktu kita tidak tersisa cukup banyak untuk mengejar apa yang selama ini kita tunda. Maka kerjakanlah sekarang juga!
