Obsessed with the idea of Maedhros being programmed to react to crying babies.
Like, anyone could hand Maedhros a baby elfling, edain, or anything else humanoid and he’ll just Take The Baby and start cradling it on instinct.
This guy has six (6) younger brothers.
Imagining a scenario where post-angband Maedhros is sleeping (miraculously) but someone’s baby starts crying outside his tent and Maedhros just, shoots straight up immediately like “where is baby. Why is baby crying.” And it’s the most encouraging thing that Mae’s done since Fingon rescued him.

Maedhros has learned the black speech in Angband, can speak it fluently & very much prefers death than ever admitting it to anyone

After Angband Maedhros was like really good at breaking out of things. Alright, he hadn't been good enough to break out of Angband itself, but that doesn't mean he hadn't tried and gotten exponentially better at it as he got more practiced over the years of his captivity, so anything that isn't the really-really-hard-to-break-out-of dungeon of the dark lord himself can't hold him for long.
Of course he decided to teach those skills to his brothers, because who knows when they might need it. If they ever got captured by orcs they should be able to free themselves before they even reached Angband.
And at some point someone (probably Celegorm) even had the great idea to practice those skills in real life, so the brothers actually started locking themselves up in the dungeons or cellars of their respective fortresses. As they got better at breaking out they sometimes even ordered the guards to play along and try to stop them, you know to make it more difficult.
(The guards thought that was slightly weird, but, you know, Fëanorians, they can be weird sometimes.)
Of course this could never not go wrong over a longer period of time, so one day it happened that Fingon came to a surprise visit to Himring. However, as he got near the fortress he got the feeling that something was wrong, so instead of announcing his presence, he sneaked around Himring to see if everything was normal.
And he couldn't believe what he found there! By eavesdropping on some guards he figured out that the people of Himring had turned on their lord and locked him into the dungeons! Unbelievable, how could they? They had always been so loyal! Fingon had to find a way to break into Himring to save him!
Anyway, the entire thing ended with a very confused Maedhros, a highly amused Maglor and a barley averted one-man-kinslaying.

You know how hair can turn white when a person is put under immense stress and trauma? You know how after Angband Maedhros’ spirit burned like white fire within? Is that anything or?

Nghhh chewing on finweans and realizing how self-sacraficial is so deeply instilled in that family, and that that particular trait is prevalent in each generation.
Finwe knew he couldnt win against Morgoth, but he could try and protect his grandchildren. He fought regardless.
Fingolfin knew he couldnt twin against Morgoth in 1-on-1. He fought regardless.
Finrod knew he would die on his quest for Beren, and still fought the wolf to save his friend. He did.
Celebrimbor knew he could protect others by dying, protecting the knowledge about the rings. He did.
It stands to reason that Elladan, Elrohir or Arwen, would have come upon a similar fate.

maedhros, resignation and/or isolation?
(from this character prompt list!
sorry it took a bit longer; I wasn't sure how I wanted to write it but I think I figured it out.)
Maedhros was alone.
He was alone in the dark, the only sensation being the cold stone beneath him, the only sound being the one of his own hitched breath and water dropping somewhere in the deeps of dungeon.
Maedhros was alone, Maedhros was alone, alone, a-
Maedhros opened his eyes.
He gasped, clenching his sheets, trying to convince himself they were real, and the light falling out of the window was real, and the sounds of people going about their morning routine down in the yard was real, and-
It was too much.
He still was missing a hand, though. That must've meant something, right?
He got up and tried to ready himself for another day.
~
"Maitimo."
He was alone. He was alone, aside from the Vala prying him with indifferent eyes - he was alone alone alone no where were Kano and Finno and Uncle he can't be alone, he can't, he ca-
"Did you really think you could escape me that easily, slave?"
Maedhros screamed.
He was in his room. Tilion's light was falling from the window.
Maedhros was shaking, trying to breathe, breathe, breathe - but he couldn't and he was alone alone alone-
He spent the rest of the night curled against the corner, his breath shaky and his eyes prying the threat that wasn't even there.
~
"Brother?"
Maedhros flinched, raising his hands instinctively. Maglor took a step back, his eyes falling to the ground, arms raised in the sign of surrender.
When did they reduce to this?
"I'm sorry," Maglor, said, still not looking up - still waiting for a sign that Maedhros didn't see him as a threat. Maedhros swalloved, crossed his arms on the chest.
"You... wanted something?"
"Can we talk? In private?"
~
"I hear you scream, Nelyo."
Maedhros looked away, pursed his lips. Maglor was looking straight at him, his gaze dark and heavy.
"You can't blame me for having nightmares, Kano," Maedhros finally said, his tone low and quiet. Maglor shivered.
"I don't- Nelyo, I don't blame you, it's not- you haven't told anybody."
"There's no need," Maedhros cutted. "No need, Makalaure."
"There is a need and you know it," Maglor hissed, leaning over the table - Maedhros resisted the urge to run, to fear his own brother. "You can't keep doing this. You can't."
"You," Maedhros growled, "have no idea what I can and can't."
~
"Look at you, Maitimo. Doing what I want. Locking yourself in the cage crafted by your own hands."
Maedhros looked away, too weak to answer. Moringotto tilted his head.
"Perfect, perfect. I love this thing you're doing: pushing others from yourself, playing martyr while in reality just hurting them."
Maedhros was shaking. "Please. Can't you be silent? You're not real. You're not real, you're in my head-" his whispers were quiet, mixed with sobs. "Be quiet. Be quiet."
"Maitimo," the voice croons, "you've chosen my company over the company of your brothers. There's no one to blame but yourself."
~
When Maedhros woke up, he didn't have a strenght to rise and start living.
When Maedhros woke up, he wished he stayed dead.

I do think it’s strange that Maedhros of all people is a character that gets woobified so hard because the MOST compelling thing about him isn’t his heroism, it’s the fact that he was heroic and the BECAME A VILLAIN. I’m not even going to say became an anti hero because I don’t think that’s accurate, I mean he became a straight up villain. Destroying what was basically a refugee camp, attacking the army fighting against morgoth when half of his identity post thangorodrim was once based around fighting Morgoth. I’m not the first person to mention the irony of the fact that maedhros is the only person to ever escape Angband without being in thrall to Morgoth, and then years later his actions are absolutely aiding morgoths cause rather than the cause of the remaining Noldor.
And that is what sets this character apart. His downfall. Part of that downfall is his earlier heroism but what makes this character so well written in the first place is that the seeds of that downfall start early at Alqualonde. It’s tragic but it isn’t surprising.
I changing this character around so that somehow his later actions are excusable or against his will or that deep down he has actually been a hero this whole time is very strange because if that’s the case then how is he any different than fingon or turgon or thingol? In fact if that’s the case then he’s more boring than these characters because he’s not nearly as outwardly noble.
He becomes a villain and as the shadows of that villainy were apparent early on, the shadow of his heroism is still apparent later on as well and that’s the tragedy. He could have turned around at any point, he could have still saved himself. But he doesn’t and it’s horribly tragic and as a story, it’s absolutely brilliant character work.

Winter headcanons for the March of Maedhros
More in the himring and beleriand tags!
World Building Masterlist
Send me a location and I’ll write some winter HCs!
-Temperatures drop to the extent that access to water can become a concern. Wells that are fed from groundwater can freeze and the rivers and lakes become even more dangerous to venture upon. Water is sometimes sourced from snow which is boiled to distill it.
Second Note: I have a post about water in Himring here!
-Heated stones, primarily obsidian and certain types of sandstone are heated and wrapped in cloth as a treatment for lasting pain. The relief is fairly short lived but especially for the duration of the treatment can be incredibly soothing. Maedhros himself has benefited from this as have the many residents of Himring with lasting effects of injuries from battle, or, in some cases, torture. Changes in weather can exacerbate chronic pain and other conditions including mobility, mood, and other functions.
-The soldiers of Himring often sleep in extremely close quarters during the winter for warmth, especially when firewood is scarce. Scouts and spies limit their fires when away from the citadel to limit the possibility of being seen.
-Warm clothing and materials come from wool imported from Thargelion, and from reindeer, ermine and rabbit native to the March. Feathers from snow and tundra geese are also used for insulation.
-Much food is preserved for cold winters and for the soldiers and scouts who rotate out and need food that can last. Methods of food preservation are learned from the dwarves who aided in the construction of Himring as well as through trial and error (These are still Noldor and take pride in experimenting and exploring). Himring utilizes more of these methods than many other elven realms. Salted meat, stocks and broths that can be quickly heated over a fire, root vegetables, dried fruit from the summer, usually orchard fruit like apples that can grow in colder climates.
-There is a ghost story told by the scouts of Himring of elves who simply walk away into the winter wilderness and are never seen again. These elves were said to appear in a trance like state or to appear as though something has caught their attention. These stories are often implicitly associated with former thralls, who are often thought of or depicted as ghosts, transient, or otherwise eerie.
