(XIV||22-29): Fuse.
(Continued from here.) (♪ - I highly recommend listening to this one for reading!)
Despite her best efforts, that flame of bravery quailed as she was guided to the crowded steps of the Tribunal. Her seeking eyes picked them out of the assembled; her immediate family, dressed in somber finery as befitted the occasion. Raphael Bale, her father, his salt-and-pepper hair combed neatly back from his worried face. Her mother, Mathilde, similarly-frightened with a spark of indignant anger in her pinched expression; taller than her husband by six ilms or so, a gift from her Durendaire grandmother, as was her umber skin. Mathilde’s sister, Elodie de Centurio, had her sword arm looped through Mathilde’s; she cut an impressive, elegant figure as always, with her blazing-red hair and its streak of white tamed into short curls, her sturdy adventurer’s body immaculate in a tailcoat and dress trousers. Anne-Sophie’s elder brother Felix, heir to the House, kept his face schooled into a perfect courtly mien that gave nothing away; it was only when his eyes caught hers that he offered her a wink, which stirred that flame of hope within her breast. It burned brighter as she saw Noémie, hand-in-hand with her wife, Aurienne de Courcellain; the astrologian and the pacifist mouthing ‘go get ‘em’ and ‘we’ve got you, Annie,’ respectively.
Rallying herself with their support, she stood up as straight as she could, managing to look much taller than her five-fulm-two-ilm frame would seemingly allow. They had come, after all. They would stand by her to the end.
---Previously, in the Gyshal’s Greens:---
I’ve always enjoyed rain. Even now, as it patters against the shingles of my hideaway, it brings back memories of watching droplets streak like serpentine comets against the lead-glass panes of our summer home. For all that we Bales are a hardy folk, favoring strength of body as a means to carry a clever mind, we didn't much care for outdoor excursions when it rained.
Everything within that western manor took on a festive air during summer thunderstorms. Stewards that had served since Father and Uncle Alberic were babes at the breast pressed their noses to the windows, gasping with delight as levin threaded wild ribbons between the clouds. Father would break out the good port and overindulge, playing cards and dice in the cellars with the kitchen staff. Mother and Aunt Elodie would gather us children in the conservatory facing the gardens, then throw the doors wide and race us to the stables and back, laughing and shrieking with each heart-rattling boom of thunder. “Warm up, wet moppets,” Mother would say each time we returned indoors, all of us stripping down to our smallclothes and seeking out the baths in the eastern wing.
Later, Felix would help the maids with the washing, while Noémie and I curled up with books and board games in the library, letting the warm fire dry our combed hair. As the cloudy skies grew darker, Mother would draw Father to bed, which we children all pretended not to notice, especially because it meant we could stay up late. Felix used to join us half the time, pretending he was too old and too important for our silliness, but inevitably succumbing to our childhood flights of fancy.
I wonder how many times Aunt Elodie carried each of our overtired bodies to bed in her strong swordswoman’s arms, giving us a gentle kiss on our foreheads before retiring for the night herself. Safe. We were all safe during those storms; the mountains around our estate were much taller than its highest gables, and the dragons did not often attack when levinbolts fused blinding pathways in the skies, seeking the tallest targets.
Perhaps that is why I enjoy this cabin, called the Gyshal’s Greens, so much. It feels safe, too; hidden and remote. A summer estate for the Knights Errant; humble for an estate, to be sure, but with its own vault beneath its weathered boards. Its own thriving gardens, too, and a nearby spring-fed brook. No stewards---at least, not yet---but we all like it that way. It means there is always good work to be done; the sort that leaves you exhausted but fulfilled as you enjoy a filling supper that you grew much of with your own hands.
I had plans to start a dodo hatchery in the spring, for meat and eggs. Perhaps a pen of aldgoats in the blackberry brambles out back, too, if we could keep them from destroying our crops. I say “had”, because my future is uncertain now. This may be my last night in the Greens, and I am here alone; Miovont off to Ala Mhigo with his sailing crew, and Trineaux with his adoptive parents in Empyreum. Though I miss their company, in truth I am glad for this moment of solitude. Miovont’s lighthearted jokes might fall flat for me tonight; a shame, since he tells such jokes as a way to stubbornly defy the early death that crawls through his veins. Trineaux would be keeping his hands busy, either cooking or cleaning or separating out the mending for me to do; though born to nobility, he was raised in the Brume, and his family performs day-to-day tasks with fervency that nearly seems religious in nature. Strange how that particular trait is never seen as heretical.
No, I should not let my thoughts turn to bitterness. I must have faith. Ishgard is changing, and, when I am honest with myself, the actions that I took to get myself to the First were rather reckless. Now that I have travelled more, both in that other world and in mine own, I understand that the rite I performed could leave any nation vulnerable. It is my dearest hope that the Holy See knows my contrition on this matter, while still allowing that the practicing of such magicks cannot and should not be anathema any longer.
I have already prepared for tomorrow. A suit of my dress armor sits polished on its wooden form, my Glass at the ready by its side; not the same dress armor I favored when I travelled to the First, but similar enough. I know the Temple Knights will strip me of it straight away, but it is important to me to come correct, as they say.
I will enjoy the fire in the hearth and the rain against the windows until they lull me to sleep. When I awake, I will muster my courage and head to Whitebrim Front to turn myself in. I wonder if I can collect the bounty on myself and donate it to some venerable cause; the Fury knows I have put any number of smallfolk at risk simply by accepting their bread and board. Perhaps someone will catch me on the road tomorrow and take the reward; given how Nymeia has been spinning my threads of late, it would suit.
When at last Anne-Sophie dozes off in the oversized chair, she dreams of an upturned ewer, pouring a gentle stream over the Gyshal’s Greens. Atop these waters are illuminated pages that float like water lilies, surrounding the Mystic Knight with a sense of peace that she has not known in moons.

N.S. wineries assessing damage from record-breaking cold snap
Vineyard owners in Nova Scotia are assessing the damage after last weekend's record-breaking frigid temperatures.
John Eikelenboom was hoping the heat from 80 round bales of hay burning throughout his Port Williams, N.S., vineyard would be enough to keep his plants alive.
“I went out at 10 that night and lit the bales and stayed with the bales until 4:30 in the morning,” Eikelenboom says.
A couple of his hybrid varieties made it through, but the Arctic-like temperatures were too much for some of his less-hearty varieties, like Riesling and Chardonnay.
“(Wednesday), we went to work dissecting the buds. It wasn’t all pretty news but it’s not a disaster, but it’s pretty close,” says Eikelenboom.
It is a similar story at the nearby Domaine de Grand Pre winery in Grand Pré, N.S., where their in-field weather station recorded some freezing temperatures.
“The temperature at 4 a.m. on Saturday morning was about 25° below celsius, and the wind chill was 37,” says vineyard manager Jim De Kock.
De Kock says it stayed that way for almost 12 hours.
“We know there will be problems but we can’t say what the scope of the problem is,” he says.
De Kock came to Nova Scotia last August and has been working in vineyards around the world for 25 years, most recently in South Africa. He says he’ll lean on other wine producers for advice on how to mitigate the damage.
“What I will use mostly is knowledge from this area, producers from this area with the cultural knowledge,” the wine maker says.
Back at the 1365 Church Street Vineyard and Winery, John Eikelenboom is hoping some of his veins will produce a second bud and he’ll be able to salvage some of his grapes. How much won’t be known until spring.

A 2022-es foci VB csapatai (Wales)
Megkezdjük a B-csoport bemutatását, ezúttal Wales következik. A walesi válogatott a világ egyik legrégebbi válogatottja, hiszen az első hivatalos mérkőzésüket 1876-ban játszották Skócia ellen. Ennek ellenére csupán a második VB-jükre készülhetnek. A védelemben valószínűleg 5 védővel fognak játszani, ott könnyebb kiszámítani a kezdőket, hiszen Joe Rodon, Chris Gunter és Connor Roberts is szinte kihagyhatatatlanná vált Pagenél.

No cambiemos nada... No longer a conspiracy theory: Dutch farmers must make way for asylum seekers
Flevo member of parliament Niek Beenen (JA21) has shared a document on Twitter from the province of Flevoland in the Netherlands about the purchase of "nitrogen space" in the Noordoostpolder.
Published: July 7, 2022, 6:39 am
“The province of Flevoland has bought nitrogen space in the Noordoostpolder. With the nitrogen space that has been freed up, the province can help a number of PAS claimants in the Noordoostpolder. This opportunity has arisen because the government has bought an agricultural business in the Noordoostpolder. The government wants to set up a registration centre for asylum seekers at the location of the farm,” reads the document.
“In this country, farming families who produce food are being exchanged for asylum seekers,” tweeted Beenen.
“Of course it is a conspiracy theory that all farmers in the Netherlands are being bought out because a lot of asylum seekers are coming to the Netherlands. Yet it does not help to send such letters as Flevoland province is in the middle of the nitrogen crisis,” responded entrepreneur Rutger van den Noort.
“The constant denial that immigration, housing, nature policy, agriculture and nitrogen/climate have anything to do with each other is laughable,” he added.
PVV-leader Geert Wilders also responded to the document. “Here’s the proof. It just says it all. The farmer has to go because they want to build a registration centre for asylum seekers on his land. They are completely destroying the Netherlands. Our farmers out, the fortune seekers in. No wonder people are furious,” Wilders noted.
— Geert Wilders (@geertwilderspvv) July 6, 2022
FVD group chairman Brent Hadderingh commented: “Farmers out, asylum seekers in. Really every caricature has been surpassed. Unashamedly.”
“According to people […] I spread ‘conspiracy theories’ when I say that farmers have to make way for migrants. It clearly says here: ‘The government wants to set up a registration centre for asylum seekers at the location of the agricultural business’. What’s a ‘conspiracy theory’?” asked legal philosopher Raisa Blommestijn.
The application centre will be in Bant, where about 1500 people live who do not welcome asylum seekers.
Meanwhile, countless photos and videos of the farmers’ strike against land expropriation in the Netherlands have circulated on the Internet, even though the mainstream media tried to ignore the protest. The situation escalated at the beginning of this week. The farmers have also been joined by fishermen and seafarers, blocking ports and thereby endangering the already fragile supply chains. The government, for its part, has called in armored personnel carriers.
The authorities have tried to put down the protest with tear gas and batons. The farmers responded with blockades, hay bales and manure. There appears to be no end in sight to their resolve.
Since Monday, supermarkets and ports have increasingly been the focus of the protests. German farmers have taken part in the rallies at the border crossings. Hundreds of farmers blocked the access roads to large supermarket warehouses with hay bales on Monday. More than 20 distribution centers of the large supermarket chains were affected.

The wreck of the plague ship Grand Saint Antoine , 1721
The Grand Saint Antoine, a french three masted flute, had been on the road from the eastern Mediterranean for ten months in the year 1719/20, before finally delivering its valuable delivery to Marseille. She had loaded about 280 tons of the finest fabrics and 500 bags of potash from the Middle East, the Middle East and North Africa. Trade with the Middle East was lucrative, but there was always the risk of introducing the plague, as outbreaks were more frequent in these areas.
After the plague had struck Marseille five times in total, a sophisticated health police system had been set up. It consisted of three phases that every ship had to go through: medical checks at the entrance to the port, various stations for the quarantine of passengers and commercial goods outside the city, and different anchorages for the quarantine of the ships and their crews. Depending on the port of origin, the crews were classified as either harmless or questionable.
Undated drawing of a flute, a typical 17th century cargo ship. Drawing from the Compendium, Vessels and galleys, by the draftsman and engraver Nicolas de Poilly
In fact, the Grand Saint Antoine had only anchored at ports classified as harmless before coming to Marseille. Nevertheless, some crew members and passengers died during the voyage. But the diagnosis was that it was a fever, not a plague. For this reason, French officials initially only quarantined the merchant ship for 30 days. Further cases of illness and deaths among the crew, however, suggested that the cause was more than just a fever.
The fatal thing was that the fleas carrying the plague pathogen were in the fabric. The fabric bales had been taken ashore by the ship, where they were to remain in quarantine away from the city for a month. But it was already too late: the fleas had jumped over to the carriers of the goods. Once again, the Black Death spread to the French port city. After one month, the Grand Saint Antoine and her crew were moved not far from the city to the island of Jarre. The goods that had already been recognized as the origin of the disease were also brought to the island. However, the measures were of no use. The plague spread rapidly to Marseille. In search of a culprit, the captain of the ship was arrested and the crew had to wait on the island.
On 21 August 1720, the vice-legate Rainier d'Elci prohibited the papal Comtat Venaissin from trading with the southern parts of Provence. All traffic in the mountains of the later département of Vaucluse was banned.
In February 1721, representatives of the Comtat Venaissin and the Kingdom of France agreed to build a wall 25 kilometres long and two metres high between Monieux and the Cabrières gorge to protect their respective territories. Because of the impassable terrain and the lack of qualified workers - most of the work was carried out by farm workers, tramps and children - the construction lasted until July 1721. The plague wall was subsequently guarded by about a thousand papal soldiers.

By the end of August 1721, however, the plague had reached Avignon and the Comtat Venaissin, while it had almost faded away in the southern parts of Provence. Without further ado, royal soldiers took over the building in order to protect the south from the north. It was not until January 1723 that the plague was overcome in the Comtat Venaissin.
By order of the French king, the ship and its goods had been burned in the meantime. After extensive interviews, investigations and long observation, the crew was allowed to leave the island of Jarre as early as January 1721. The captain was acquitted of the crime and released from prison in 1723.
