As someone who loves Inscryption despite its flaws I GOTTA know: what are your thoughts on its faults? I've seen you vague post about it and I'm so curious (also, hi!)

hiiiii :3 Lovely to see you reach out after you seeing you always pop up in the tags :D

To be clear, I still like Inscryption despite its flaws. It’s *interesting* as a piece of art, and that’s way better than a game that just technically checks off all the boxes of being playable. Like, I’ve been able to write several thousand words’ worth of a video essay script on this game, covering both the good and bad. It’s that fascinating to me.

Since I don’t want to unload 40 minutes’ worth of text on you here, I’ll just say my main thesis is that the game brushes up against a ton of genuinely cool ideas, but the developer never seems to notice them because he’s too married to the way things were done in Pony Island, and what people who like Meta Games expect. And Inscryption keeps so much info in the dark that you only realise this at the end.

The genre shifts are the biggest sticking point for me. If you know the developer already (or have watched someone else play the game), you’re perfectly fine with them being there. But if you’re someone like me who played the demo and then jumped in blind, you’re going to be burned by the shift to act 2 (and to Luke), which is nothing you would expect from the wonderful aesthetic act 1 mostly relies on. Even though I *like* both act 1 and 2, I kind of have to like them for separate things (i.e. a beautifully haunting roguelike based off forest folklore vs a deckbuilder exploring the worst art-kid polycule divorce you’ve ever seen).

The culmination of this is Kaycee’s mod, which I love, but is an implicit admission that the creator didn’t actually know his own strengths. An endless mode to only one third of your game is not a common thing to add in after launch, especially if you’re not early-access.

Then in act 2, outside of its lore, the game’s theme becomes the idea of games as art. The Scrybes are both multi-faceted characters in their own right and proxies of game design philosophies.

Leshy is the visceral experience of being in another world, while his actual game is pretty janky. Grimora is pure fun (which is a great contrast against her death aesthetic). P03 is the very specific way some designers get obsessed with game mechanics above all else and produce the most mid games you’ve ever seen. Magnificus is spectacle to the point it’s stupidly hard to actually play his deck.

Throughout both takeovers, there are always items or mechanics from the other Scrybes popping up. The stand-alone campaigns are arguably better than act 2 because they’re much more focused, yet Leshy and P03 both still can’t escape the influence of their colleagues.

This is all extremely interesting characterisation and commentary on game design that all goes unsaid. And as much as I dislike Luke Carder’s plot, I’ve spoken before about how the themes his story touch on would be a fantastic fit for that meta-commentary.

All this is great, self-contained within act 2. But the way the finale (and arguably act 3’s more lore-based segments) are written afterwards implies that wasn’t intentional at all. The culmination of this game is that all the Scrybes get deleted and go out in a sudden bombastic finale like in Pony Island and then 😱 maybe this guy shouldn’t have looked for secrets… Because now he’s dead IRL…

And it’s like. Okay? Sure. That looked cool I think. But what is the point of the story then, exactly?

So much happens in so little time in the finale. The writing is basically speedrunning all 3 of the remaining Scrybes’ arcs, and then has to reveal the OLD_DATA affecting Luke, and then has to show him getting killed. And you still don’t know what’s going on.

Then you go looking online for secrets and read that actually the evil glitch thing that was mentioned maybe twice in act 2 was important, and was the entire motivation for the plot. Also everything’s technically linked to the dev’s other games.

And I just. Do not think that is interesting at all, compared to the more carefully designed, and more character and theme-driven stories.

Daniel Mullins' work is unique in how whole-heartedly he includes meta elements, and I just think it's a shame he didn't take the opportunity to explore further beyond his usual comfort zone, as you might've expected from how different Inscryption's aesthetic is to his other games.

It should also not have taken that long to get to the point if the main story was a straight-forward evil artefact plot. Which the creator has already done in a more concise game years ago.

I think Kaycee’s mod tackles a lot of Inscryption's main issues, and I’m loving its smaller plot and more consistent pacing more than whatever the fuck was going on with Luke. But objectively I think it’s a big ask to force people to go through like. Everything after act 1. So they can play a potentially better version of the game.

From 8 o'clock in the morning on Friday to 8 o'clock in the evening on Monday, I was away from home for the longest time yet, as this weekend was GalaCon at a new venue in Waiblingen, Germany, a long distance away from home; but almost exactly 2 months to the day since I left the hospital, I headed to my second ever Pony Convention, which was simultaneously the biggest Pony Con I had visited yet!

Though I managed to keep my mind focused and my heart calm, and I did not let the rapidly shrinking frame of time I had to board get me down, it is rather surprising how many little things can add up so quickly, and leave me with only a few minutes to run to the other side of the train station; but I made it onto the train, and found a seat, until shortly before I arrived at the transfer station.

Quick thinking saved me a load of heartache, for although the escalators to the platform were bust, one flight was blocked, and, for some reason, there were no stairs to make it there, I made it down to another part of the platform, and ran into the train with moments to spare; and after reassuring friends and family, I met my friend at the very next station, and from here, we travelled together.

There were a number of connections we had to make, about which I kept informed at all times, though when we arrived in Venlo after finding that our desired train was delayed, we leapt aboard another, which had also been delayed, and made it to Mönchengladbach on time for the right train to Cologne; and since we had time to spare, we chatted, and ate, and stood, and waited until the train arrived.

It took some time to board, but finally, after a close call with supervisors telling screaming kids to alight, we sat down in our cabin, where I could rest my mind, and we waited for the long journey to Stuttgart; and on our journey, Bas and I spoke of books we had read, and beings beyond knowledge in tales of Lovecraftian origin, a genre in which I have actually written short tales, a few times.

Riding over hills decorated with castles and through tunnels past rivers and steep orchards, we had made it to Stuttgart at long last, where it took me some time to figure out German public transport in this part of the country; but I managed to create an account, and purchased day tickets for both of us, before we set out to the centre of the city, as Bas had requested we stop by the Lego Store.

After a terribly long walk to the S-Bahn, a very short trip to the city centre, and but a couple of minutes of walking further, we made it to the Lego Store, where I could see Bas' eyes light up with joy as he carefully dashed around the displays and shelves; but I spent some time to let folks know where we were, and where we were headed after this, as neither of us had yet arrived at our hotels.

Fortunately, Bas had found what he sought, our trip to and in the S-Bahn was but brief, and we were on our way towards Fellbach and Waiblingen, where both of our respective hotels were; and after two short bus trips to and from Bas' hotel, we headed to Waiblingen one stop further, and to my hotel a stone's throw across the road from the station, where we found ourselves in good, familiar company.

Since we had chosen to head to the Biergarten Schwaneninsel to meet up with other, we headed to the bus stop, where the greatest moment of the day took place, as we met my friends, Joel and Ember, by surprise, and we just ran to each other for such deep embraces; but they went towards the venue for pizza, whereas Bas and I went to Swan Island, where we ate, and drank, and met many familiar faces.

It took us some time to leave, as we frequently stopped for or were stopped by friends over a short distance, but the night was growing old, and we had to return to our hotels; and back at the S-bahn station, I wished Bas a good night, told him to stay safe, and returned to my room, where I finally met Michael, Railway Dash, my roommate for the weekend, and gushed about the great journey thither.

And to think, the event had not even started yet…

- DK the 3rd is the oldest of the quadruplets of son DK Jr and grandson of Donkey Kong Sr AKA Cranky Kong and One of the many star children

- He is the leader of DK Clan and After going along what he has been though to Kongo Bongo and The Mushroom World, He was now crowned the new King of Kongo Bongo Island as its ruler and protector of The Island and The Crystal Cocoanut.

- A Member of The Mushroom League

- DK sees his nephew Diddy and his friend Dixie has a little brother and sister he never had. Donkey Kong did look after Diddy when he was a baby, 10 years later, They Stop the Kremlings for the first time together and After Diddy Kongs Quest, there bound was good then ever then before.

- DK along with Diddy Kong became good friends with Esther Kong and Lexie Kong scene it was like Uncle and Nepew with Aunt and Niece

- The Laidback did love to enjoy not just only Bananas but good ol Banana Cream Pie made by his Girlfriend Candy Pop "Candy Kong"

- DK loves to work out nearly at the Beach, A workout room, His Treehouse and A the Kongo Bongo Gym. His favorite workout were squats.

- DK and Diddy were the first ones to survie and finished Mama Kongs busnisuse by retreving the Yellow Crystal Banana in the secret temple.

- Unlike his grandpa, Donkey Kong was very good friends with Mario Jr "The Son of Crankys old nemesis, Mario Sr/Jumpman" alongside Luigi and Mara everytime they go for adventures, Go Karting, Sports and parties

- Over the years, DK had been protecting his home island from The Kremling Empire, lead by his arch nemesis, King K Rool. Who was always stealing the Crystal Coconut *Mostly*, Bananas, Precocious Objects and even him and his clan. He also fought the Koopa Empire, where he was rivals with Morton Koopa Jr.

- DK was unsure what happened tp the both of them after that fight, this makes Cranky take over his son's place as King. He tries to ask Funky and Swanky but they won't tell him. He watched at the top of Kongo Bongo hoping one day, Scar and His Father will return.

Diddy Kong

Age: 13

Sexuality: Staright

- Diddy is the son of Funky Kong and Uncle of Donkey Kong

- Diddy is dating Dixie Kong and also good pals with Esthers niece, Lexie Kong.

- When Diddy was 8 year olds Dixie meeting for the very first time when Chunky Kong comes over with younger Dix and Tiny. They became insepreal friends everscene rather than hanging out with his uncle for a change. After the events of DKC1 arc, Diddy told Dixie abut his big adventure and was into rapping and decide to have his own music career, alongside Dixie.

- During nearly at The End of the DKC2 arc, He along with Dixie was shocked and terrified who were have to face off his long lost uncle Scar Kong who just betrayed the Kremling Empire and preapers for battle. They were scared for the whole fight befor snaping back to their final battle to Kaptian K Rool.

- Diddy admires his uncle alot but yet suffers from Slight Self Esteem Issues

- Member of the Mushroom League

- Timber the Tiger's parents go on holiday and leave their son in charge of the island they live on, prompting him and his friends to organise a race. Their enjoyment is interrupted when a sinister intergalactic pig-wizard named Wizpig arrives at Timber's Island and attempts to take it over after having conquered his own planet. That is why Diddy along with Timber and the others worked together to defeat Wizpig.

- Before being captured at DK64 arc, Diddy got the insprarations of his dad and invented the Peanut Guns and The Barrel Jetpack were it was very useful for his adventures with his pals.

Dixie Kong

Age: 13

Sexuality: Straight

- Dixie was also 8 when she meet Diddy for the very first time and would become very good friends

- She was a bit younger, she have been learning how to have the ability to make her pony tail how to grab, hover with a spin and use her hair as a helicopter.

- Dixie first adventure was with Diddy when K Rool as Kaptian K Rool captures DK and the both risked their lives to Krocodile Island rescuing him and later DK and Diddy alongside Kiddy Kong. During her time adventuring, she indeed enjoyed the absolot thrill of adventure, making new friends and Achining her dream of being a rock star.

- Dixie has a friendly rivalry with her little sister Tiny. They would ether play pranks on each other or roast each other. Whatever it case, they would enjoy each other with their friends, Diddy and Lexie in the DK Clan and would work together to solve any case. Sometimes with an aid of an allie or 2.

- Dixie and Candy Kong were like a dou of sharing the same journey and adventure together as well playing video games.

- Dixie was taking surfing lessons with Diddys cool dad Funky Kong and was also enjoying the beach.

- Dixie was almost scared and half to defat when DK and Diddy almost died in outer space with Mario and his allies, so she's been focusing on improving her worth for the team. That is why Dixie was recently getting involved with the Koopa Empire.

- Dixie's favorite anime is Yo-Kai Watch alongside Diddy, Tiny and Lexie, Thanks to Mara showing it to her.

Donkey Kong Sr/Cranky Kong

Age: 68

Sexuality: Bisexual

- An old enemey of The Marios Father who suffred trauma when he was captured by the Travling Circus and recaptured by the hands of Mario and was the only one who hasnt moved on.

- Father of DK Jr, Grandfather of DK III, SK, FK and SK and Great Grandfather of Diddy Kong.

- His wife Wrinkly Kong died after DKC3 arc which left him devastated and hurting himself even more.

- Scene his return to Kongo Bongo Island and Jr's dissapearance, Cranky Kong was crown king until he evenly retired, due to getting old. Now a days, he has been finding and celling old junk and Brewing up Potions

- Knowing his Grandson Donkey Kong the third will be next in line for the throne, he was distend to put him into amount of training to make sure he and his Allie’s can be the best Clan they could be until he was ready.

- Usually he doesn’t let anyone one borrow The Crystal Coconut like Gill Koopa for an experiment for its magic unless he could get them to do chores or Watching over it while he goes out.

- Like the old Country Show and The Games, He would love to pull some pranks on the Kongs sometimes but mostly on Halloween to give them kids tricks. The only one who can outsmart him were Tiny Kong very year.

- Cranky mosty likely stayed in his cabin at his rocking chair, brewing up potions and protecting the Crystal Coconaut unless something or he ants to leave.

- Cranky mostly likes his bananas deep fried or have them on a kabbob.

-Cranky had a huge grudge aganst Mario Jr because it sets a reminder about his foe Mario Sr and along with Jr's Brother and Sister. Even though they helpped him out along with other Kongs sometimes but that didn't make a point.

Esther Kong

Age: 20

Sexuality: Pansexual

- When Esther’s father joins The Kong Clan as a guard before she and her siblings are born, she dreams about being apart of The Clan once she is older but life have other plans for her family, Moving out of Kongo Bongo Island when her older brother Buchin Kong and His wife Gallica Kong started to have kids. 10 years later, Her family decided to move back where Esther joins and Befriended The DK Crew.

- 5 years ago after Esther’s youngest nicece was born, She and Gallica would return to Kongo Bongo Island, were they try to retrieve the Crystal Banana. Gallica was killed in front of her at middle of the trail, forcing Esther to retreat, traumatized. She still loves doing what she do but also blaming herself for Her brother’s depression because of his wife’s death.

- Esther Kong was a fun aunt during her new home in a different island and Becomes close Buchin Kongs oldest daughter, Lexie Kong. After the death of Gallica, she started to become over protective and would beat the strudle out of any bad Kongs or The Kremlings that would hurt her 7 nieces and nephews. Plus a uncontrollable breakdown and rage!

- Before meeting Mario and his allies, Esther’s nieces and nephews are started hanging out in the Mushroom Kingdom with DK and his allies, She would become nervous about leaving the island again. She was later captured by The Koopalings alongside Cranky. After being rescued by Mario, DK and their friends along with defeating Bowser, She fell comfortable exploring The Mushroom World and making new friends. Her closest one was my OC, Gill Koopa.

-Her own best friend group is Mara and Amatory.

- Esther crossover friendly rival is Esther Winchester (Cuphead)

- In a relationship with Gill Koopa

Lexie Kong

Age: 10

Sexuality: Dont have one yet

-Lexie’s personality at was being a sweet spider monkey just being cared free but sometimes getting into bad situations with her brothers and sisters and usually ratted them out. Sometimes she does like a little fun.

- Lexie Kong not only immerse Esther but her mother mostly even though her to play the bongos and drums. After Gallica Kong was killed, she ends up in a huge depression as the same time that her dad had gone a depressed catatonic. Sometimes she had dreams about her and crying in bed. She will try to move on eventually.

- Lexie is not the only one who remembered her mother but the only one with orange fur.

- When her family moved to Kongo Bongo Island, Lexie along with The Konglings follows Aunt Esther to Cranky’s Cabian to get a job at the Kong Clan and meets Donkey Kong for the first time. Lexie would eventually meets new friends of DK’s esspally Diddy and Dixie as she fines them a very silly dou when they came to help her take care of her little siblings. It wasn’t long her father started dating again with a male kong.

- When DK and his friends take Lexie and her siblings to Spiral Mountain and the Mushroom Kingdom, Lexie actually enjoy the trying something new. She witnessing Gill Koopa was one of a few Koopas with a brains and kindness. After a while and Esther started dating him, She quickly excepts him as her God Uncle.

- During her first few days in Kongo Bongo Island, Lexie and her siblings first encountered King K Rool when Diddy and Dixie are helping her babysit them, when trying to get the Crystal Coconut. She was definitely afraid of him. She once found away to outsmart him but that didn’t last long.

- Lexie's favorite anime is Poyno

- The Mario Bros found Lexie Kong cute and suprised about when they saw wearing a purple L hat when they first meet.

- Her best friend group is Diddy, Dixie and Tiny

Funky Kong

Age: 31

Sexuality: Bisexuall

- Funky is the second youngest of the quadruplets. He was quite okay of not being King of Kongo Bongo Island because he would rather spend his time in the beach just surfing and would make a business in there as well.

- Funky is the Husband of Roxanne Kong and Father of Diddy Kong.

- After the disappearance of his brother Scar Kong and father, Swanky and he offically agreed to kept it a secret from DK because they know DK was the only one who will take the throne. Eventally Funky was be able to keep things cool and got back to his life for the future.

- Funky is fine with his son going on adventures with DK but sometimes worry him. He been on an adventure with Diddy along with DK, Dixie and Cranky once, when the Snow Vikings attack *Tropical Freeze arc*

- Funky along with his family lived on a beach were he owns a bar selling cold beverages of any type of fruit flavored or coconut shakes

- His favorite actavity to do while is was not at work, He just loves to surf at the beach. He specially loves felling his face of the air rushing on him as the sea carries him.

- He can go to work everywhere where he was needed thanks to his plane that he could deliver some things and help his Kong allies get to places where they needed to be.

- While he was growing up, He learns who to make mechanics where he works at a Mechanic Workshop years later, organizing, fixing, and creating vehicles and owns a Weapon shop were DK and his friends have to get weapons to defeat K Rools strong army. He continues with helping the Kong Clan including his Brother and Son whatever The Kremlings got under their sleeve.

Pony Island 2 has the potential to be the funniest DMG game ever methinks. If the Pony Island 1 Daemons come back Asmodeus would be so fucking pissed about it it'd be so hilarious.

What if King Yan doesn't even give a shit about ponies which is why the new iteration of the arcade cabinet tries to stray as far as possible from that. He wanted to make a survival game. But then oops! Yeah the fucking Devil just escaped Hell. We need someone in charge of Pony Island! Stat!

So now he's forced to try and work his ideas into that mess of a game. He can't get rid of the Pony itself though. That's Satan's pride and joy. A testament to his game design genius. Nevermind that he's probably forgotten about Pony Island by now and is living it large as the CEO of a videogame company. Literally every single person that isn't the Devil fucking despises having to deal with Pony Island. Being assigned to that game is probably the REAL worst possible fate for a digital being, it's just that literally none of the Gameworks NPCs even know that game exists.

If being assigned to Inscryption is the NPC equivalent of Dreamworks employees being "Shreked" as punishment, Pony Island is.. dear god.. no, no I shan't say..

Let's just say Asmodeus suffered a fate way worse than a "Shrek-ing".

Random TotK Thoughts #2

I've gotten a bit further, having completed one regional phenomenon, found a few more dragon's tears, and done some sidequests and exploring. I am having so much fun!!!

Specific things under the cut just to be safe.

-Something I forgot to mention in the first post, but how awesome is it that your horses carry over? I love that the devs included this little bonus. I spent so much time catching horses in BotW just for fun, so it's extra nice having all of my favorite ponies around for another tour of Hyrule.

-Where did Zelda find that gold horse though? How does a gold horse even exist in the first place? It even looks metallic with the way light refracts off of its coat. Bizarre. xD

-Penn's "Soar Long!" is the best/worst catchphrase ever.

-The journey up to the Wind Temple was great. Just climbing higher and higher, using the islands as "stairs" to reach the eye of the storm. I can't say I was very impressed with the dungeon itself though; it's an improvement over the Divine Beasts in terms of design, as it feels like it has its own identity rather than just repeating the same aesthetic as the shrines, but the puzzles and layout were very basic and once again, the goal was to activate five things. It's still a downgrade from a more traditional Zelda dungeon.

-I did like having to fuse a giant icicle to a broken handle though. That was a neat idea. And the Colgera boss fight was good and very fun, if a bit easy. I'd rate the whole sequence as like, a B overall, i.e. good but still has room for improvement.

-Tulin is cute as heck and his skill is useful. His headshots are even more useful (except when the enemy falls off an edge and I lose the drops, which has happened a lot). I've still found myself missing Revali's Gale a little though. :/

-I killed my first Frox in the depths on my mission to get Autobuild. It was almost completely dark since I hadn't found the next Lightroot, so it took me a minute to notice the ore deposits on its back. I kept shooting its eye and wondering why it was barely doing any damage, lol.

-Imagine my surprise when I ran into a Yiga down there, and then when Kogha showed up. I like how this is a "logical" way for him to have survived his confrontation with Link back in BotW. And that he's still an idiot who's easy to beat.

-Did Link just give Zelda his house in Hateno? (Also, I appreciate that the photo from the Champion's Ballad is still on the wall. Another nice little continuity touch.) Interesting though that the table is set for two but there's only one bed....

-After I visited Robbie at the lab and got the shrine sensor (finally), whom did I see casually flying by but Naydra! And man....I'm so psyched that you can actually land on the dragons now. I hitched a ride on her for quite awhile, and it helped me reach a couple of towers and scout for some other points of interest. And I harvested a few of her parts too, of course.

-I was surprised to discover that she goes into the depths (I assume Farosh and Dinraal do as well). I almost fell off when she started diving and then I realized we were entering a chasm. Neat!

-Also, I love how her body undulates as she flies, and she makes this soft purring/growling sound too. It's the little details like this that make the game world feel so real and immersive.

-Knowing now that Mineru tinkered with the Purah Pad in the distant past, I'm getting a headache trying to figure out if Sheikah technology derived from Zonai technology, or if it's actually the other way around because of time travel shenanigans.

-Also, you can't tell me that Zelda, the massive history nerd, didn't take at least one selfie with her great-great-great-great (etc) grandparents and many, many pictures of ancient architecture and technology while she was in the past. Somewhere on the Purah Pad is a hidden file filled with hundreds of photos that she took. Change my mind!

-I have a mighty need to know how Rauru and Sonia met and what their courtship was like. This two second interaction in Memory #2 begs for elaboration.

(She hit him with a closed fist! The look he gives her just sends me, and then he rubs the spot afterwards like it bruised.)

-I like how Sonia's reaction to Zelda is basically, "I'm taking her home with me and adopting her."

-I'll confess to my idiocy that I didn't immediately notice that Rauru has three eyes; I thought its lid and lashes were part of his facial markings (tattoos?) until I looked more closely. Does he keep it closed by choice or does it only open as a reflex in certain situations? I'm guessing the latter since Mineru's third eye is closed as well.

-It's funny to me that he literally has hair down to his heels and his sister's hair is cropped so short it's almost unnoticeable under her ears and visor. xD

-Also, bless the animators for actually using Rauru's magnificent ears to show some of his emotions. The way they twitched in Memory #3 made me grin so much.

-I think I've figured out what the major plot twist of this game's going to be. It can't be a coincidence that Mineru mentioned a forbidden power of draconification and that there was a dragon that flew right next to the Great Sky Island to allow Link to descend to Hyrule, can it? Hmm...

I'm glad I waited until the last minute to figure out how I felt about the games I played this year because there were some surprise changes right up until the end. I think I managed to get most things I played this year that weren't just demos onto a list and will have opinions on them.

There will potentially be too many to tag properly, but maybe I'll try linking the game titles to the tags and see how that goes, which should bring up any previous posts about them with more detail (although I still haven't finished updating all the old posts to the new tags yet as of writing this so they might not all work right away).

Also except for the final category stuff within each group isn't really in any particular order, and there's no hard boundary between some of the categories where I think everything in one is definitively better than everything in another (e.g. I think Aria of Sorrow is better than at least some of the stuff in the "pleasantly surprised category", but I liked it exactly as much as I expected to so it is where it is).

So starting from the worst:

Fate/EXTELLA LINK was the least fun I had with a game all year. It's like what if a Musou game felt worse to play and also had an extremely uncomfortable level of pandering to weebs and their waifus in the writing. Blech.

Diablo 2: Resurrected is literally unplayable without creating an account and being online even though D2 has always had offline single player. They don't actually mention this. I only have it because it was cheaper to get the bundle with D2 and D3 than D3 by itself.

Super Mario 3D World is the least fun I've had with a Mario game in literally decades. 3D movement with a fixed camera is awful. I still like the full 3D games and the 2D ones, but this is nope for me.

Pendula Swing is honestly probably fine on a different platform (read: with a mouse and keyboard), but the Switch version is borderline unplayable. The idea seemed interesting but it was so clunky I couldn't get into it.

Ys Origin just hasn't aged well. I played it a long time ago and it was in the "fine, I guess" category, but trying to replay it after some of the newer ones (which will be further down the list) was rough.

And then games that were mostly just disappointing to me:

Diablo 3 is one of those things everyone kept saying at least feels the best to play out of all the modern ARPGs for years, so I finally gave in and tried it to see what all the fuss was about. It feels like Torchlight 2.5 with a bigger budget and was kind of uninspiring overall.

The Outer Worlds was something I was really hopeful about, but I just didn't find anything at all about it enjoyable.

Pokemon Picross is just a bunch of free-to-play bullshit ruining something that could've been fun. The world is better off with the eShop shut down so no one can play it anymore.

Persona 5 Royal is another one I was really looking forward to that I just did not click with at all. The first few hours were full of minor annoyances and did very little to win me over.

AI: The Somnium Files had potential and sounded interesting, but moon logic for solving puzzles should've stayed in the 90s and I could do without all the random horniness.

The World Ends With You: Final Remix and NEO: The World Ends With You are frustrating because they have so many interesting ideas and a neat presentation but just aren't any fun to play, especially the first one.

Tales of Vesperia just hasn't aged super well I think. I know there are people who like it, and I was looking forward to it, but I think I would've had to play it closer to stuff like Tales of Symphonia to appreciate it.

Inscryption is not my thing at all. It's a shame because I loved Pony Island, but I just couldn't get into this one.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a Donkey Kong Country game, which have always been just ok to me. I should've remembered that and not bought into the hype over the years.

Next is stuff I liked the idea of but didn't really like playing enough to stick with it:

Titanfall 2 has really neat movement and stuff, and I've heard the later levels do some interesting stuff, but beyond that the actual combat wasn't really my thing.

Ori and the Blind Forest had too many frustrating bits to keep me playing through the parts I did like.

Disgaea 4 seemed fun and like it had a lot of potential, but I always find that kind of SRPG way too fiddly, ever since I tried the original Final Fantasy Tactics.

Marenian Tavern Story: Patty and the Hungry God is just a worse version of Blacksmith of the Sand Kingdom (see later on the list), which is understandable because they made it first.

Bravely Default I mostly played a couple years ago, but this year I put another dozen hours in and finally gave up on it. I really like a lot of stuff about it, but there were just too many things that frustrated or annoyed me.

They Bleed Pixels seems like fun and has some good pixel art (mostly the story stuff outside the gameplay segments), but I don't think it's for me.

Hero Hours Contract is an amazing idea and I love almost everything about it except for actually playing it.

Luckslinger took forever for me to get around to. The idea of luck being a consumable resource you have to manage is really neat, but I wasn't really enjoying the actual game, even if "pixel art hip hop spaghetti western" sounds great on paper.

Carto is one I don't really have anything against beyond apparently glitching it into an unrecoverable state and not being invested enough to start over.

Cris Tales is another one of those ones where I like a lot of stuff about it except for actually playing it.

Anarcute was a lot of fun for a little while, but it started introducing more elements I tend to not really like. Definitely one of the cuter games on the list with one of the best theme songs though.

Followed by things I had mixed feelings on or the "fine, I guess" category:

PixelJunk Eden 2 was fun enough, but they changed things from the original in a way that seems to be to make it more suitable for mobile, and I feel like most of them made it worse.

Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars didn't quite stick the landing. I loved the idea of everything being cards on a table with a single narrator/GM running everything, and the world and characters were interesting enough for a while. It didn't quite hold up for me all the way through to the end though.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is...better than Breath of the Wild, at least? It's smoothed over a lot of my biggest annoyances with that, and it's amazing that half the stuff in it even works at all, but it still doesn't feel like Zelda to me and has been pretty low priority to get back to and finish.

Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness and the Secret Hideout has one of the worst openings of any game I've played in years and absolutely awful pacing. It did seem to finally have opened up and gotten potentially rather good where I left off (and might get back to one of these days), but it shouldn't take half a dozen hours for that.

Yoku's Island Express is a clever idea and was a pretty good time for a while, but it's also one of the buggiest things I've played in the past year, and that's what drove me to stop playing.

Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is frustrating to go back to. I loved the demo when I played it a couple years ago, but redoing everything now because I'm playing the full game on a different platform kinda sucks because of how slow the start is.

Will Die Alone has an interesting premise and way of interacting with it, but it stops short of quite saying as much with it as I would've liked.

Chaos;Head Noah had so much potential that kind of got wasted in the end. I really liked a lot of stuff about it along the way, but it's also kind of a mess. Hopefully when I get around to Steins;Gate they'll have learned to do it better because the anime for that one was great.

I'LL KILL HER is basically an interactive comic book, and the main strength is the art. The rest is fine I guess. Every content warning for this one.

Murder by Numbers is a constant mix of mildly amusing and mildly annoying. I hope they can even things out if they make more games in the future.

And then games that were pretty good but not my favorites:

Kuukiyomi: Consider It is a silly idea and doesn't overstay its welcome. I haven't felt an urge to play the sequels so far though.

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line is definitely the best in the series and has tons of great music, but I still have some issues with this style of music/rhythm game that keep me from completely loving it.

Cadence of Hyrule was kind of annoying when I first started playing the demo, but once I got the hang of it I had a pretty good time mostly. The huge difficulty spike at the end left me less happy with it than I was for most of the game though.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is probably the best game in this category, much better than most of the others, and my favorite Castlevania game, but it's a little short of being one of my favorites overall this year.

Syrup and the Ultimate Sweet is probably my second favorite in thie category and rather cute and silly.

One Night: Burlesque is the "worst" game in this category and doesn't entirely succeed at what it's trying to do, but I appreciate the effort and the overall vibes.

Gunma's Ambition -You and Me Are Gunma- is literally just a single joke drawn out for like an hour, but they lean into it enough to make it work.

LOUD: My Road to Fame has a couple weird design decisions that make it a bit frustrating toward the end, but up until then it's a surprisingly fun music/rhythm game with decent original music.

Lara Croft GO has some pretty decent puzzles in it and is probably my second favorite Tomb Raider game at this point, but I also had some Issues with it that held it back a little bit.

Next are the ones that I was pleasantly surprised by that were better than I expected:

Pixel Puzzle Makeout League was not what I expected. I figured it would just be picross with a silly dating sim on top, but I had no idea about the themes and ideas it would go into, and the entire ending section of the game in general was great and totally unexpected.

Blacksmith of the Sand Kingdom really surprised me. I had zero expectations going in, and while it isn't quite great at anything it's good to very good at a lot of things and was pretty satisfying in the end.

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is the most Zelda-like game I've played this year (with close competition from another game down the list), and an actual Zelda game came out this year. Exactly as long as it needed to be and went in a more interesting direction than I thought it would.

Majotori is something I accidentally stumbled on because it was on a list of games that at least tangentially have lesbians in them, and it's delightfully silly.

Death end re;Quest really surpassed my expectations, even if I have significant enough issues with it that it's hard to recommend without caveats. it did some surprisingly interesting things though, and I keep thinking about it from time to time.

Rabisco+ was an impulse purchase because it randomly came up and was very cheap and I had no idea what was going on in the cover art. It turned out to be a short but pretty fun arcade-style puzzle game.

Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana was the first Ys game I played since Ys Origin first came out in English, and the series has really come a long way since then and is much better these days.

Demong Hunter was basically an impulse joke purchase because I had to know what makes a demong different from a demon. I still have no idea, but this was way better than I expected from what initially seemed like a cheap mobile game.

Ys IX: Monstrum Nox wasn't quite as good overall as the previous game in the series, but I still had a lot of fun with Goth Adol, and all the new movement abilities added a lot to it.

Perfect Gold did a surprisingly decent job of having flawed characters who worked through problems in their relationship without making them annoying or unlikable like often happens.

Trigger Witch is the other most Zelda-like game I played this year. I totally grabbed it because of the cover art and it was on sale, but it's a pretty solid twin-stick shooter mixed with the LttP/LA era of Zelda.

Will You Snail? was pretty unknown to me before I started playing because I somehow avoided anyone else playing it or talking about it, but it turned out to be a pretty good precision platformer with a fun gimmick, which is hard to pull off for me because I can be kinda picky about how platformers feel to play for some reason.

Vivid Knight managed to absorb nearly all my game time until I finished it, which I did not see coming. I did eventually start to see the cracks in the systems and stopped enjoying it as much, but up until then I got pretty wrapped up in it.

And finally the ones that were probably my favorites, not necessarily in order but with the best generally toward the end:

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition and Xenoblade Chronicles: Future Connected would be more toward the top of the list except this was a replay so I'm disqualifying it. I played the Wii version originally, and they sure did improve almost everything in an already great game in this version.

Bowser's Fury was about as enjoyable as Super Mario 3D World was unenjoyable. I'm not sure it would quite work for a full size Mario game, but there were some good ideas in this one.

Trials of Mana really polished up an older game that I thought was kind of underwhelming back in the day and turned it into something I had a great time with. Between this and the recent announcement of the new game I'm cautiously optimistic about something good in the Mana series finally happening for the first time since the PS1.

Harvestella really caught me off guard. I was expecting a farming sim with some Final Fantasy-style nonsense on top, and it turned out to be 85% JRPG with a story I liked more than anything FF has done in years.

Can Androids Pray is the most last minute addition to this list on December 30th. When a short story (in any medium) really focuses in on a single relationship or conversation or event or idea so well that it implies the existence of the entire rest of the universe around that my brain just starts vibrating. This is one of those.

The House in Fata Morgana takes a long road to get to its ending and the characters earn every step of the way there. It also surprised me by being a totally different flavor of queer than I expected.

Unpacking wins the award for best vibes. I had a lot of feelings about this one, probably including some they weren't expecting people to have when they made it, and it does a better job telling a story than most stuff on this list despite having no visible characters and almost zero dialogue.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim I think wins for my favorite story/writing this year. People said it was a great sci-fi story, and not just for a video game, and they were right.

Fire Emblem Engage is the winner for my favorite gameplay. They absolutely nailed a lot of the mechanics and systems on the game design side of things, and it's my favorite Fire Emblem game at this point.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed gets this spot for my favorite overall. They polished the already great gameplay of XC3, introduced some great new characters and brought back some old ones, and managed to expand on a lot of the story from the entire trilogy and tie up a bunch of stuff all at the same time.

And I guess that's finally that. There were some pretty big disappointments for me, but there were even more really great games I played and ones I had no idea I'd like as much as I did. I think I'm just going to tag stuff in the final two categories (since that's what'll fit) and call it a day.
