Mosaic, Steven Soderbergh's app/HBO TV series thingie
youtube
Steven Soderbergh's latest project, Mosaic, takes two forms. The first is a free iOS app that contains an interactive miniseries with over seven hours of footage that you can move through in the style of Choose Your Own Adventure, with "DVD extras" built right into the story. Mosaic will also air in a more conventional linear form on HBO in January. Both versions star Sharon Stone, Beau Bridges, and Garrett Hedlund. Wired has the story of how Mosaic came to be.
Where they ended up was a smartphone-enabled story, developed and released by Silver's company PodOp, that lets viewers decide which way they want to be told Mosaic's tale of a children's book author, played by Sharon Stone, who turns up dead in the idyllic ski haven of Park City, Utah. After watching each segment -- some only a few minutes, some as long as a standard television episode -- viewers are given options for whose point of view they want to follow and where they want to go next. Those who want to be completest and watch both options before moving on can do so, those who want to race to find out whodunit can do that too. Because each node, filmed by Soderbergh himself, feels like a TV show, launching Mosaic can be akin to sneaking a quick show on Netflix while commuting to work or waiting on a friend; but because it's long story that's easily flipped through, it can also enjoyed like the pulpy crime novel on your nightstand, something you chip away at a little bit at a time before bed. It's concept isn't wholly original -- Soderbergh himself notes that "branching narrative has been around a long time" (the most obvious analogue is a Choose Your Own Adventure book, but Soderbergh cringes at that analogy) -- but that it finds a way to appeal to both fans of interactive storytelling, and people who just want to watch some decent TV.
Matt Zoller Seitz also interviewed Soderbergh about the app/show for Vulture. It's a really good interview (not surprising with Seitz at the helm); they inevitably got into the question of Hollywood and abuse of power:
MZS: Do you believe that in order to make memorable art, you have to be disturbed in some way? SS: Not at all.
MZS: That's what's often raised as a defense of Roman Polanski, Mel Gibson, and others. SS: No, I don't believe that at all. It takes a lot of energy to be an asshole. The people I admire most just aren't interested in things that take away from their ability to make stuff. The people I really respect, and that I've met who fit this definition, have a sense of grace about them, because they know that there is no evolving and there is no wisdom without humility.
You can't get better if you behave in a way that shuts people off. You can't! You don't have all the ideas necessary to solve something. You don't! I'm sure if you spoke to Harvey in his heyday and said to him what I just said to you, he would believe that he accomplished all that he had because of the way he behaved.
MZS: Meaning, like a bully. SS: Yes, and I would argue instead, "You're 50 percent of what you could have been, because of the way you behave." Ultimately, there is a large group of people who are talented, who you want to be in business with, but who won't be in business with you. I don't know how you view that as being your best self, or the best version of your business, but I'm really curious to see going forward what changes.

Mosaic (2018)
Presented by PodOp and developed for HBO by Soderbergh and Casey Silver, in conjunction with writer Ed Solomon, the MOSAIC app is an interactive storytelling experience, available as a free download in November, that will be followed by a six-part limited series that will air on HBO in January 2018.
Three years in the making, the MOSAIC app allows viewers to choose what point-of-view from which to follow the story and to, in effect, build their own experience from the material Soderbergh and Solomon created. The choices one makes build upon one another, enabling multiple tellings of the story from different perspectives and, sometimes, with different conclusions. Viewers will be able to see how their own versions of the story on the app ultimately compare to Soderbergh's six-part linear narrative in January.
Directed by:   Steven Soderbergh
Starring:   Sharon Stone, Garrett Hedlund, Jennifer Ferrin, Beau Bridges, Paul Reubens, Frederick Weller, Devin Ratray, Michael Cerveris, James Ransone, Jeremy Bobb, Maya Kazan
Release date:   January 2018 (on HBO and the App Store)

Steven Soderbergh was supposed to retire from the film industry a few years ago to pursue a career in painting. Just a few months into his self-imposed retirement, he began filming The Knick and spent a few years producing television. He returned to movies earlier this year with comedic-heist film, Logan Lucky, and has just debuted his new telvision project for HBO, Mosaic. Angela Watercutter describes the new project in Wired:
Mosaic, which is available today for iOS devices, started out of frustration. Soderbergh was getting increasingly annoyed with the Hollywood system and starting to realize the general structure and grammar of what a film looked like hadn’t evolved in decades. At the same time, Casey Silver, the former head of Universal Pictures, was trying to develop a new way to tell stories. In the summer of 2012, when Soderbergh was promoting Magic Mike, Silver approached him with a fairly rudimentary idea to use the technology available through smartphones and apps to let viewers interact more directly with the characters they were watching. Soderbergh was interested, but wary—he didn’t want to do anything that felt "game-y." But they kept talking and soon, the director says, “it very quickly evolved into something that went beyond what the original concept of what this thing was, and more into the territory where we ended up.”
Where they ended up was a smartphone-enabled story, developed and released by Silver’s company PodOp, that lets viewers decide which way they want to be told Mosaic’s tale of a children’s book author, played by Sharon Stone, who turns up dead in the idyllic ski haven of Park City, Utah. After watching each segment—some only a few minutes, some as long as a standard television episode—viewers are given options for whose point of view they want to follow and where they want to go next. Those who want to be completest and watch both options before moving on can do so, those who want to race to find out whodunit can do that too. Because each node, filmed by Soderbergh himself, feels like a TV show, launching Mosaic can be akin to sneaking a quick show on Netflix while commuting to work or waiting on a friend; but because it’s long story that’s easily flipped through, it can also enjoyed like the pulpy crime novel on your nightstand, something you chip away at a little bit at a time before bed. It’s concept isn’t wholly original—Soderbergh himself notes that "branching narrative has been around a long time" (the most obvious analogue is a Choose Your Own Adventure book, but Soderbergh cringes at that analogy)—but that it finds a way to appeal to both fans of interactive storytelling, and people who just want to watch some decent TV.
I loved this — I downloaded the app but haven't started yet (the show will also be edited as a seven-part HBO mini-series, debuting in January). This reminds me of a short piece I wrote last year about how Beyonce and Kanye West were challenging the form of the album. I'm increasingly interested in projects — whether in film, in music, in design — that are challenging form.
Matt Zoller Seitz has a great interview with Soderbergh on Vulture about Mosaic, filmmaking, Harvey Weinstein, and more. I especially enjoyed this part where Soderbergh compares heist films to filmmaking:
I just stupidly realized while I was doing press for Logan Lucky how obvious the parallels are! Somebody asked me about it, and I was like, “Huh. Well, I grew up in a suburban subdivision of Baton Rouge, nothing would theoretically connect me to heist movies …” Except for the fact that they are absolutely mini versions of making a movie!
As the 1950s film critic Jacques Rivette wrote: “Every film is a documentary of its own making.”

Soderbergh's experimental 'Mosaic' HBO series hits iPhone and Apple TV
Director Steven Soderbergh has made a name for himself by pushing cinematic boundaries, so it's no surprise that his upcoming series for HBO, Mosaic, isn't your usual TV fare. Today, he's launching the Mosaic app on iPhone and Apple TV (with Android and web versions to follow soon), which will let you decide how you watch the show. It's not quite "choose your own adventure," since you're not making any decisions on the show's outcome. Instead, the app, which was developed by PodOp, lets you determine how Mosaic's narrative flows.
The first episode introduces you to Olivia Lake, an author played by Sharon Stone. After viewing that, the narrative path branches into two episodes. You could just watch them in parallel, or you could follow the path down all the way to the end, then go back and catch up on what you've missed. You can also unlock additional clips, documents and recordings to flesh out the story. HBO is making all 7.5 hours of the series available in the app, but it's also going to air a six-hour version of the series edited by Soderbergh (naturally) on January 22nd.
youtube
"While branching narratives have been around forever, technology now allows, I hope, for a more elegant form of engagement than used to be possible," Soderbergh said in a statement. "At no point were we reverse-engineering the story to fit an existing piece of technology; the story was being created in lockstep with the technical team. The fluidity of that relationship made me feel comfortable because I wanted it to be a simple, intuitive experience."
Conceptually, Mosaic sounds similar to what Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz attempted with the fourth season of that show on Netflix. He originally said you'd be able to watch those episodes in any order, but then later backtracked on that suggestion. Francis Ford Coppola also tried something similar with Twixt in 2011, a film that he could "remix" narratively with an iPad. He wanted to tour with the movie and edit it live, but eventually settled for a traditional release.
HBO
For Soderbergh, Mosaic is just the latest in a string of TV experiments. His Cinemax series, The Knick, tackled the early days of medical surgery with an anachronistic synth-heavy score. Soderbergh's film The Girlfriend Experience is now a TV show, as well, and its second season is also dabbling with branching narratives. Soderbergh says he's working on two more series using the Mosaic platform. Eventually, he hopes to open it up to other directors.
I've only seen part of Mosaic's first episode, but I'll definitely be devouring the entire series as soon as I can. It's unclear if the app will appeal to anyone beyond Soderbergh fans and cinephiles, though. In the age of bingewatching, it seems like more viewers simply want to sit back and consume hours of content without lifting a finger.
