apropos of nothing, I made Tape-E
Who is Tape-E?
During one of the TMA livestreams (trying to remember which one), a fan question was asked ‘Is there a mascot (for the Archives or the show itself not sure)?’ One of the team suggested ‘Tape-y?’, to which everyone else responded with ‘Oh no!!’. So I thought, oh yes! So yeah, this is your fault 😘
What is Tape-E?
As Mr Bonzo is a parody of Mr Blobby, Tape-E is a parody of Clippy (these last two names rhyme).
Who is Clippy?
Clippy was a microsoft office assistant, introduced in 1997. He was a little virtual paperclip (officially called Clippit, but that name never caught on) who sat on the bottom right corner of the page, and was programmed to give advice in popup speech bubbles when certain actions were taken. For example, if you wrote out an address and ‘Dear’, Clippy would say ‘Looks like you’re writing a letter. Would you like help?’. The name Tape-E in the livestream seemed to be referring to Clippy, as there are many similarities in the behaviour of Clippy, and the actual tapes/ tape recorders in-universe:
always on by default
appears at inconvenient times
provides help you do not want
hated by (mostly) everyone
watching you with cold dead eyes
enjoyed by nostalgia and retro seekers
Why make Tape-E?
As I am of the same generation as some of the RQ peeps, I unironically loved Clippy and Mr Blobby as a child, and it gives me great joy to imagine, in the TMP universe, Sam getting a little pop up: ‘Looks like you’re trying to code a case file! Would you like some help with that?’ In our world this would be impossible - Windows NT (as the official name) was dropped in 1996, one year before Clippy was born, BUT there is voice recording on TMP’s ancient computers, so it’s not totally impossible! 😅😁
What are cassette tapes?
Just a little recap for those who didn’t grow up with tapes: Cassette Tapes contain information embedded in magnetic tape, wrapped around one spool and attached to a second spool. When played, the spools are turned by the machine and the magnetic tape is wound onto the other spool, the information read out through speakers as the magnetic tape moves through sensors. As the magnetic tape can contain different information depending on the direction of tape movement, you can flip the cassette tape over in the machine, and play the tape again, hearing another load of information. This concept is never utilised in the show, but it does mean that cassette tapes have A-sides, and B-sides (as Vinyl records do). Here, of course, this stands for Archivist-side, and Brutalpipemurder-side.
On occasion, the magnetic tapes would become damaged, or bent, and could be pushed out of the cassette, causing a horrible noise, and terror to small children who were only trying to listen to their Just William tapes. When this happened, a pencil (or in my case, my little finger) could be jammed into the spiky spool ‘teeth’, to rewind the magnetic tape back into the cassette. Maybe that’s why the eyes are red? 🩸 I am very glad that the TMA tapes are magic, and record endlessly, never need flipping, and never get chewed up by the hungry machine.
Why is the name Tape-E?
Canon answer: the name stands for Tape-Eyes. Possibly Tape-Entity? Undecided.
Actual answer: Tape-y, Tapey and Tapie spellings look weird to me. I think Tape-E looks best.
Why a tape and not a tape recorder?
if you can crochet a tape recorder, you’re a genius and I love you.
What gender is Tape-E?
I might refer to Tape-E as male sometimes because that’s how people often referred to Clippy. But Tape-E is whatever gender Tape-E feels like being.
Why now?
Why not?

*What’s going to happen to Tape-E?*
I’m going to gift it to Jonny sometime, if we get more cons or book signings. It’s his fault this exists after all. Plus you can write whatever you like in the speech bubbles! Hopefully I can give it calmly? But maybe Tape-E will be yeeted in his general direction in a fit of ADHD-fuelled social anxiety. Only time will tell.
Tape-E is a pattern and design created entirely by myself. The inspiration and world building from whence it came, is entirely the genius of @jonnywaistcoat Jonny Sims, Rusty Quill @rqbossman and The Magnus Archives, which is a podcast distributed by Rusty Quill and licensed under a creative commons attribution, non-commercial share alike 4.0 international license.
Clippy was invented by Microsoft and Kevan Atteberry, who now illustrates children’s books.
Mr Blobby is an adorable abomination, created from a fevered mind.

#out of queue#ani rambles#so the problem i had earlier was ‘i made 2 chains when i wasnt supposed to and everything was whack’#but i fixed it so now its Less Whack.#this is gonna be the hood i have like 12 more rows to stitch which might be a full ball of my yarn#also im understanding how motherfuckers listen to podcasts#i listened to like 4 video essays dissecting hozier lyrics and comparing them to dantes inferno#like my other hobbies (drawing and writing) require imagination and concentration and Specific Vibes#crochet requires a different kind of concentration#but so far its good for listening to new music and videoessays so maybe i’ll try a podcast tomorrow. or friday#tomorrow meaning later today because ITS FIVE AM#AAAAAAAAA

IT'S DONE.
I did it, I finished this bitch. Original pixel Jon by @podaliedja. Christ this took forever. I stitched Jon twice over because I decided I wanted to move him over by one pixel. But I like this so much better than the first version.
Here's the first version if you want to play spot the difference.
It looks a bit brighter because of the lighting, but I used the same yarns in both pieces so that's just a light thing.

crochet is suppose to be calming or whatever but instead it's making me EVIL
#starting this blanket was a mistake. it's all i can think of. it's been 4 days and its ruining my life.#it's not even a foot long yet 😭 im only halfway finished with one of three big yarn rolls im using to make it 😭#most would suggest taking a break but ill blow up and die if i do that. i cant stop until this thing is done.#in the mean time. stopping watching youtube drama videos or true crime podcasts while i work so its not making me feel worse.#trying to watch my silly little shows and documentaries instead. so far it's much more enriching.#anyways. please dont be like me and let your hobbies become your enemies lmao.

my biggest knitting pet peeve is when people act like deviating from the pattern in any way is a big deal.
No you don't have to use the suggested yarn (especially when they suggest something pricy). Use a different cast on. Fudge the measurements to fit you. Add length, remove length. Whatever.
What's the point of making things if you can't make it for you with the material you like or have available. Just do whatever you want forever. The worst thing that'll happen is you rip it out and learn.

thinking of that vegan post made me think of the yarn shop in my town. he doesn't even sell wool because it's too expensive, and only stocks acrylic yarn.
so my first sweater is sadly acrylic, BUT a few months after i started that project, i found a uk shop with wool+alpaca yarn that's /almost the same price/ which made all my hoarding tendencies snap wide awake TwT

crochet in a line is so fun but i am so so bad at turning the line in a way that the edge is even with literally any other part of the edge <3
"chain 2 skip 1" <- meaningless to me because i always guess wrong which one(s) to skip

I really want to get into TTRPG podcasts and find out what the fuss is about, but all of them seem to be like ‘every episode is 3 hours long and there are 125 episodes per season’ and I just don’t know if I want that to be my life
#like i think i’d knit through all five boxes of my yarn stash before i was even halfway done with the season#and i am immune to being podcasted unless i am doing something with my hands#i’m just saying like. are there abridged versions of critical role or taz? 90 minutes and like.. 60ish episodes??#is there a system to it? or do you guys who’ve listened to every single episode of your favourite podcast just not sleep#because see; i’m an insomniac but i’m a ‘stare into space and maybe read’ insomniac#if i hear a voice that’s not my own inner monologue after like 2am i’ll bite whatever it’s coming from#i even drown out my own internal monologue with fans. that’s how serious it is#anyway. feel free to leave recs if you’re so inclined. no worries if not#in the meantime i’m going to google a few things#personal

I am so fed up with knitting podcasters on YouTube like I stg my two criteria are 1) knits almost completely size-inclusive patterns if they make garments/don't constantly support designers who refuse to expand their size range and 2) don't knit solely with expensive yarn/have a huge stash of indie dyed/constantly "hauling" sweater quantities etc. Literally that is it. It's so easy to meet that criteria. And YET. Somehow I end up only finding people who think $17/50g is a "reasonably priced" yarn. Babe that's a high end 💀
#like. ive been knitting long enough to know thay $36 for 100g is a high end yarn jfc#$11/100g is already out of my price range most of the time but i would consider that 'reasonable' depending on fiber content. thats midtier#like.... get a fuckin grip#''reasonable'' is less than $10/100g come on now#and I've only found one podcaster who actually uses the same cheap shit i do from michaels and joann#like the people i follow still knit w shit i cannot afford#but at least theyre normal about it#disgruntled octopus
