Kitty mentioned that Hokaze’s name was not only strange for a woman, but also that it was hard to find a connection with her name and the theme the rest of the Alicein have. Now I’m no expert at Japanese names (much less Japanese itself) but I had fun digging to see what I could find, and I found quite a lot! So let’s get to it :D
Interpreted to the best of my ability, Misono’s mom has a name which roughly means “one who is quick to overcome ups and downs”
Which is why she was drawn holding Jane Eyre when she and Lily met
She’s an inversion of Jane’s story, just like the Alicein brothers are an inversion of Cain and Abel
For anyone who’s never read Jane Eyre, a quick and dirty plot summary of the relevant parts is that Jane, an orphan girl, eventually ends up in the employ of a rich man who she falls in love with, however he is married and because of that, she refuses to continue their relationship. The man of the house reveals that the reason he didn’t tell her this is because his wife was insane, and she screams and barks and growls and runs around like an animal. Eventually the woman in her insanity burns down the manor, but her husband escapes and, now a widow, it would no longer weigh on Jane’s conscience to marry him. The books ends with Jane writing about how they’re expecting their first child together. The book’s themes of morality and class differences are echoed, to the result of tragedy, in the story of the Alicein
Hokaze doesn’t manage to overcome her status of being born a penniless orphan by marrying a rich man and joining the upper classes. Instead she is murdered by his wife who has been driven mad with jealousy. Her story is one of an idealistic dream, executed in a self serving manner, confronted with reality that cost her her life
Also, the 歩 part of hokaze’s name can also be read as “fu,” a pawn in shogi :))
Mikado is the emperor, kiriko is the princess, and Mikuni the kingdom they made together
Hokaze wanted to be queen but was merely a pawn, and ultimately playing a very different “game” than the royalty around her
It’s also notable that the one who put her down that path is Lily, who shares a name with the white pawn Alice takes the place of during the chess game in Through The Looking Glass.
Her scheme also gives the name she gave Misono a very different light.
She gave him a character from Mikado’s name, “proof” of his infidelity, and the one for garden, because he is the “fruit” of her labors, the beautiful rose of the future queen of Wonderland
The extreme irony here is that Mikuni is much more like Hokaze in his actions, while Misono closely resembles Kiriko’s loyalty and ability to forgive others (at the cost of himself)
Also, Mikuni is going to hate this, but
His desire to protect misono from the harsh truths of the world, even going so far as to burn down part of his own home, is… Very, very Mikado. It’s fine if he cheats, manipulates, and even hurts Misono, so long as the result is Misono continues to be able to live with such a simple and idealistic view of love and life
They look like their mothers, inherited behavior patterns from each other’s, and also share quite a lot with their father
It’s a very beautiful way of weaving them together as a family, and also Strike’s use of word play to set Hokaze apart from the Alicein cast while also giving her name something to tie her to the theme is extremely clever. Boy is it mean though xD

what a fantastic transition
#as much as i absolutely adore LT with all my heart there are no cartoons out there that give me such a CONSISTENT sense of raw visceral joy#than the Fleischer Popeyes#they are the epitome of fun. that’s such a vague word i know but i think it perfectly encapsulates these cartoons#not too gaudy or self absorbed. despite the fantastical nature of some plots and the gags and visuals there’s a down to earth humility as#well. it owns its simplicity very well. hearing that ‘30s jazz reach a climax as the visuals and gags and tactility and emotions get#stronger and faster in the climax of these shorts literally#gives me goosebumps! it’s an adrenaline rush#i also adore Olive Oyl. i mean i love them all. Bluto is the greatest cartoon asshole of all time. i love the nobility of Popeye. but i#really love that Olive gets to be just as loud and mean and weird and ‘ugly’ as the rest of the guys. she can throw a punch too. she’s not#just there to look pretty or be coquettish. she has a really natural charm and doesn’t feel forced like ‘oooo look at the cool LADY#participating too!’ which i feel is an issue with cartoons of both the past and present#she’s just another facet to these cartoons without calling much attention to herself and i really like that and wish there were more#like her#popeye#seasin’s greetinks#kneitel#vid#the lack of regular woman characters outside of thin tropes in golden age cartoons doesn’t bug me as much as it really should#because as a kid i was so used to watching ‘boy’ cartoons and connecting with ‘boy’ characters (i thought liking girl characters would make#me ‘girly’) and so it’s something i’ve always been sort of used to#but with that said Olive is one character i feel very strongly about and am glad she exists for those reasons#i don’t know why i’m getting so deep on this 10 second post? but anyway you should watch Popeye if you haven’t

been slowly making my thru the vc books and i can say now, with certainty that the show is in fact superior in almost every conceivable way. i think nostalgia was clouding my judgment but apart from iwtv and tvl and maaaybe qotd....these books are fucking ridiculous
#yaz reads#yaz has thoughts#interview with the vampire#not to be mean but as a body of work they have zero structural integrity#each book is a long meandering mess of the most outlandish plot and the most contrived workaround established canon to suit her whims#she hates women. like deeply.#there's a disconnect between the character she thinks shes writing versus what ends up on the page re david talbot#the interpersonal relationships bar a few like lestat and louis and lestat and gabrielle and nicky are laughable#coz they never stay consistent. its like she's afraid of anyone actually hating lestat#even armands hate is blunted coz he's in love with him#plot points and character arcs are dropped entirely between books for no discernable reason#look i maintain book 1 and 2 are modern masterpieces esp book 1#and book 3 is a fun romp#but the rest are wow some have nuggets of brilliance but are swallowed up the sheer absurdity of her plots .and i can do the absurd#i love the absurd but she treats it with such solemnity that it gets me out of the story again and again#there's obvs a huge following for the series as a whole and kudos to you who stuck by her but what was she on#when the plot is weak i can focus on the intra character drama and the characters are stale i can focus on the plot#when both are done abmysally!?#rolins and co had a great task ahead of them and i think they elevated the material#so good on them#and note this isnt me bashing her for her dark themes and subject matters i can handle all that and then some#vc is quite tame insofar as being dark for a gothic series#its everything else

Christopher Nolan making movies: I'm gonna make a film that is so confusing and non-linear
#just watched memento :DDDDD#which i think would be his first bigger movie?#but it was so interesting bcs there were a lot of concepts in it that are so visible in his later films#like watching that after watching almost all of his most recent films was such an 'aha!' moment#lthe whole black&white vs in-color to delineate which part of the story we're in#in memento: black and white is the beginning of the story and then in-color is the rest of the story going backwards#and then he uses that concept again in oppenheimer but b&w is the current events and color is everything leading up to that and after#like yeah its really confusing first time around because you dont know that fully yet but then at the end its like OH!!!!!#and then both also have other stuff interspersed btwn those two sections that you only reallly understand by the end#and then with the plot going backwards. that was the same as tenet right?#like starting with the end of the story and them ending with the beginning of the story#i cant remember inception well enough atm but im sure it has traits of memento as well#his movies are like puzzles ig! like you really have to keep track of all the details and what takes place when#i think theyre really fun bcs more and more becomes clear to you#im not sure what the most confusing nolan movie is hmmmm probably tenet or inception right?#oppenheimer: much more clear in general since its following literal historical events but just in a non linear manner#the only real reason i found it a bit confusing is bcs i didnt know a lot of the characters and also was trying to figure out the timeline#and then interstellar is more just confusing in concept bcs it has to do with time in the 4th dimension and all that#but i think the story is pretty understandable its just hard to wrap your head around the different time/dimension concepts#then again....ive watched it probably more than 4 times by now! for all my grievances with tangled the series, one thing i cannot criticize them for is their songs, i mean, sure, not all of them make sense in context (let me make you proud comes to mind), the songs are spectacular, from the vocals to the instrumental, all of them are a joy to listen to, whether they are just incredibly goofy, like the buddy song, to heartbreaking, like waiting in the wings, whether its a solo, a duet or a group, they are wonderful to listen to
#i like the show. dont get me wrong.#though i cant deny there are a lot of flaws to the series n character n story decisions that dont make sense n infuriate me#and i will say imo season 1 is where its at its best. although yes flaws are present they dont. idk. ruin the season for me#but i cant say the same for the later two seasons. i mean. i had fun with s2 n liked the new characters but. a lot of it again imo is fille#but s3 is the worst imo cause the stakes are so high but they spend like 2-4 episodes actually on the main plot#n the rest is just. pointless filler. i mean. did we really need to learn more about fucking nigel of all characters#n i will say i am not a fan of cass' arch at all. i liked her in the first season n most of the second season but s3 just. ruins her for me#i also dont like how they treated euguene most of the time. he deserved to be treated better. he was the other main character in the movie#he deserved to be treated better not put in the back so as not to outshine cass n rapunzel's relationship#cassunzel this it not a critique of you. i liked the ship in the beginning to n i love the poly of cass rapunzel n euguene#n you can ship them to your hearts content. im just annoyed at the disrespect of euguene lol#can you tell that im passionate about the show. i mean. the potential was there but. they didn't do nothing with it.#im upset it couldnt be better lol#anyway what was i talking about#right the songs. the songs are spectacular (despite almost all of them not making sense in the context of the shows)#n are a joy to listen to. i love them all so much that i dont think there's any i dislike really. the songs are so so good#n are really fun to listen to. its one of the things that i can never fault the show for. they're wonderful n everyone should listen to the#even if you havent watched the show lol they're great#tangled the series#tts#strawberry speaks

One thing the bionicle novels/comics are good for are filling in the gaps the movies left (how the toa metru found the great disks, how they created ships to ferry the matoran to mata nui) but then you get the books that stick rigidly to the movies' plots and suddenly it's like "oh yeah, vakama went from being malcontent to actively betraying his friends in the span of a literal day (and his friends located a mythical rahi in that same period)" when I always assumed there was more of a time skip in the movie, and I would have loved to see those two plotlines progress in parallel
#bionicle#look im just a sucker for a) plotlines where someone loses themselves to The Beast Within#and b) betrayal#so web of shadows was a formative movie of my youth#maybe there is more of a time skip#but the book is literally like “oh there's a big day tomorrow (when you destroy the toa)”#and it's explained how the rest of the toa hordika basically get swept away to their destination#anyway in my heart it takes a good while and vakama doesn't just speedrun his heelturn#look. the fun of a betrayal plot is the character basically giving in to despair and thinking they only have the one option#also what i will never forgive about the book: roodaka doesnt actually send her minions#plummeting to their deaths but actually has a safety net in place#that's too kind of her#i mwan. it makes sense. but not for her

the more time passes since i first watched it, the more i like good omens season 2
#i definitely enjoyed it at first its a lot of fun but it also felt weird#having New Stuff with these characters when it's just been the one plot (the book's)(more or less) for years#so as it goes on and i'm rewatching it it's becoming more familiar to me so i guess i like it more#and it fits better as time goes on. i'm getting used to the shape of it.#i'm seeing it more as what it is: a continuation of the show's events and not just 'oh there's this Completely New thing'#i still think maggie and nina could've been done better but overall yeah it doesn't feel as chunky as i originally thought it did#i kinda expected a plot that had more beef to it and not so much#'whoops gabriel's here! let's have some flashbacks!'#like it is pretty apparent that it's a season of filler (mostly)(WHICH IS GOOD I LIKE FILLER YIPEE FILLER)#but as i said i'm gettingused to the shape of it as funsies and filler and not necessarily as 'whoa plot plot plot!!! stakes!!! plot!!!' yk#and yeah quiet gentle and romantic is a good description#i mean. the last fifteen minutes 💀 but the entire rest of it IS mostly sweet and nice and silly and i love that!!!!#bluebird.txt#good omens#good omens spoilers#<- just in case

rpgs are kinda like comfort food to me where theyre very cozy to come back to and just indulge in, especially pokemon where no one team is gonna be exactly the same, but dear god i need to take a break from them every once in a while or it risks feeling samey anyways

OOF#i'm still halfway through the game and i can't tell it's not gonna get any better...#so many years waiting for this game and this is what we get...#i'm literally so disappointed. i only see flaws...#i feel like all the ppl who give this game a 10 are not fans cause there's no way they are not complaining about the lack of plot#and character interaction#(btw i say they are not fans as in. this is the first bayo game they've played)#(obviously if you are a fan and loved it then good for you! i'm happy for you)#but i'm not enjoying it in the slightest and i hate to say this SO much you have no idea#bayonetta means everything to me and i'm a huge fangirl#so know that if i'm complaining so much it's because genuinely. this game has too many flaws#sigh... anyway#can't wait to get to the ending no one liked!!#btw no spoilers please! as i said i'm halfway through the game#delete later maybe

#pmatga#my ocs#oscar morin#my art#I was laying in bed a couple of nights ago and just said 'I think it'd be neat if Oscar had several siblings'#I didn't mean for them to all be women but here we are!#also a fun-not-so-fun fact: Oscar's mom passed due to a fatal accident when he was maybe 14 or 15???#could not tell you what the accident was because the idea is still fresh in the brain#his mom was cool :(#she was a very inspirational woman to all of her children#and that's a huge reason why Oscar and the rest of his siblings all work hard n' junk#these guys are also not important to the plot (other than oscar maybe)#I just wanted to draw his sisters#character lineup#the morin sisters
