Dungeons & Dragons: Call Backs to Iconic Art PART 2
In 1989 the 2nd Edition of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons was released. Later in 1995, to mark TSR’s 20th anniversary, the 2nd edition was re-released with further rules modifications and addons. More notably to me, this set of books – The Players Handbook, The Dungeons Masters Guide, and the Monster Manual - were given the full colour treatment in art and layout.
Tumblr media
However, aside from the new look, there were several art pieces that had the special distinction of being “call backs” to iconic 1st edition images. In some cases, these illustrations either further extrapolated the inferred narrative of the original 1st edition image, or were simply a “retelling” of the image itself.  Although some are more successful than others, it was a pretty cool attempt at pulling from that past while still keeping things fresh and new.
This is Part 2 of 3. The original illustration is presented first (a B&W illustration, with the exception of the first illustration below, the cover to the 1st edition Player's Handbook) with the 2nd edition re-release following it.

NEW! From the #ENnie Nominated crew @1PlatinumDragon Productions “Graves of the Gorgons: Crypt Stone River” a 2nd level 5th edition Dungeon and Dragons adventure module by @ToddSecord! Get your copy at @DriveThruRPG
"I never knew that such evil existed beyond the valley!"
Whether by the punishing whims of nature, or through the machinations of villainous entities, there are many forgotten moments throughout history where the world has come oh so close to utter collapse. Through the ages, wave after wave of these potential atrocities have been thwarted, put down either at their earliest beginnings, or just before the finality of their master stroke. The ruins of these confrontations are embedded in the sands of time, stacking upon each other, layer by layer, leaving behind the relics and remnants of stories not fully apparent in the moment they are rediscovered. The era of the Gorgons, a tale that even the most learned of mages might not be aware of, will soon be encountered along the southern coast of the Great Sea. Three merfolk sisters, powerful and vile, are having their ancient legacy reconstituted in a manner even they would not have anticipated. With their darkness reawakened, triggered into slowly revealing itself, the adventurers are about to clash with the first of the Gorgon sisters on the Crypt Stone River.
Crypt Stone River is a fantasy roleplaying adventure for use with 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons and requires the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition Player’s Handbook, published by Wizards of the Coast. The adventure is designed for a party of four 2nd level characters but can be modified easily to present a challenge to larger groups or more powerful characters. Crypt Stone River is designed to be a 1 to 2 session scenario.
*Included with this adventure are printable character and monster counters, player handouts, maps, and pre-generated characters for "out of the box" tabletop action. Counter art by the great Claudio Pozas and maps by John "The Engineer" Wilson!
