About Pixar's Luca:
- Luca and Alberto: definitely gay
- Those two old ladies: absolutely lesbians and a metaphor for LGBT people being encouraged to come out when they have an example
And that's wonderful. But Giulia being a lesbian - she could be, but she doesn't have to be, and if a sequel were to be made, either would be fine. But assuming her sexuality based on her not being traditionally feminine doesn't sit right with me. To me, she's one of the rare good representations for girls in media (along with Leisel Meminger from Book Thief (NOT the movie), Vanellopee von Schweetz from Wreck it Ralph, Merida from Brave and Hermione, Ginny and Luna from HP books). Because guess what? That's how little girls are when nobody is policing how they dress, talk and behave, when gender roles aren't enforced upon them, and when they're not fed that "how to be a proper lady"/ "boys don't like this or that" bullshit. They're curious, energetic, ambitious, weird, and love to play and have fun just as much as the boys. I also strongly believe that friendships between boys and girls are possible, and it's lovely that the movie focused on a friendship between 3 kids (while Luca and Alberto obviously have deeper feelings for eachother, and also, their romance being pure and age-appropriate). Thinking that Giulia is a lesbian solely on the fact that she may seem tomboyish compared to other Disney/Pixar girls and that she's not romantically interested in neither Luca nor Alberto is just lazy thinking. Again, as a bisexual, I love seeing positive representation in media and know that we need it, especially lesbians, but we also need to let all little girls know that not performing femininity and being yourself is a valid, healthy option, even if you're straight.
