When Laura Meyer won the World Pizza Championship for pan pizza in Parma, Italy, the Italian judges called her the male word for champion. Despite her first-place victory, she was the only winner who didn't get a trophy that day. Hers was mailed a year later.

"They basically refused to acknowledge that a woman had won," she said, recently recalling the snub. She was the first woman to win — and the first American. That was 2013.

"Women have always been part of pizza, but it's very macho. So many people think I could only be as high up as I am because I'm Tony's wife. I'm not his wife. I'm his talent."

Almost everyone I know is down on San Francisco these days, and for good reason. Few can envision a future here. The city is undergoing an accelerated identity transformation. On pastel blocks, developers are gutting elegant Victorians and mid-century homes and painting them staid shades of gray. Traffic congestion is spiking, boosted by rideshare vehicles. Fundamental civic infrastructure is in crisis, despite the city’s new wealth: teachers are leaving, and the 911 dispatch center is understaffed. The emerging city is a tapestry of boutique fitness studios and finicky New American restaurants, of private clubs (including one for dogs) and cryotherapy spas. Fast-casual restaurants cater to the efficiency-oriented; a newly opened salad shop, Mixt, offers a mood-lit, wallpapered “salad lounge.” Upscale cafés proliferate, some of them backed by venture capital: investors have put seventy-five million dollars into Philz, a local third-wave coffee chain.

These are infrastructural changes, and changes to the built environment, but they are also renovations of the ethos or spirit or soul of the city. (“What soul?” a friend joked last week—a writer who has lived here for fifteen years and whose rent-controlled building just went up for sale. “It’s gone.” She gestured through the window of the pie shop where we sat; its owner has become an activist of sorts, refusing to work with delivery startups and pressuring the Board of Supervisors to question the legality of classifying gig workers as contractors rather than employees.) San Francisco, where streets are named after union organizers and Mexican anti-imperialists, and local landmarks include murals from the Depression-era Public Works of Art Project, is becoming a paradoxical urban space: a homogenous corporate campus run through with threads of public pain. People struggling with addiction and mental illness sleep on the streets outside unicorn startups and shoot up in front of City Hall. Some of the companies that the city has incubated are now seen to be invasive, rapacious, extractive, creepy; in the local economy and national imagination, they eclipse serious work being done elsewhere in the Valley, in industries such as biotech and robotics.

Cruffin creator and San Francisco-founded bakery @MrHolmesBakehouse has landed our shores! Opened 12 July, the new bakery-cafe @MrHolmesBakehouseSG is currently their only international outpost—the Seoul outlet, which I had the pleasure of visiting, has shuttered. Located at @PacificPlazaSG, their bakes—from their star cruffin to variety of croissants, donuts and cookies—work well in a takeaway/delivery climate, though their signature “I Got Baked In” neon sign and white-pink aesthetics are best enjoyed in-person on an idyllic afternoon. For their launch, they’ve collaborated with @MightJaxx—you’ll find a vending machine of toys and merch—and their latest character Monixx on a limited edition 💖Yellowpink Croissant. It’s a cheerful matching of ruby chocolate and the tropical zinginess of mango curd. Another must-try is their 🍋🥐Lemon Meringue Pie Croissant. The airy pastry is dusted with lemon sugar, decked with torched meringue and white chocolate shards, and generously filled with a luscious and tangy lemon curd. Their Mint Chocolate Chip Cream #Cruffin will draw divided views. Rather than a more usual reinterpretation of childhood flavours within a buttery, flaky pastry, the filling was an overwhelming grassy buzz—that distinctly refreshing menthol kick of mint lacking. Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (3/14 in the month/day date format) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day.

Pi Approximation Day is observed on July 22 (22/7 in the day/month date format), since the fraction ��22⁄7 is a common approximation of π, which is accurate to two decimal places and dates from Archimedes.

The entire month of March 2014 (3/14) was observed by some as "Pi Month". In the year 2015, Pi Day had special significance on 3/14/15 (mm/dd/yy date format) at 9:26:53 a.m. and also at p.m., with the date and time representing the first 10 digits of π. Pi Day of 2016 was also significant because its mm/dd/yy represents pi rounded to the first five digits.

Pi Day has been observed in many ways, including eating pie, throwing pies and discussing the significance of the number π, due to a pun based on the words "pi" and "pie" being homophones in English ( /paɪ/).

Massachusetts Institute of Technology has often mailed its application decision letters to prospective students for delivery on Pi Day. Starting in 2012, MIT has announced it will post those decisions (privately) online on Pi Day at exactly 6:28 pm, which they have called "Tau Time", to honor the rival numbers pi and tau equally. In 2015, the regular decisions were put online at 9:26 AM, following that year's "pi moment".

Princeton, New Jersey, hosts numerous events in a combined celebration of Pi Day and Albert Einstein's birthday, which is also March 14. Einstein lived in Princeton for more than twenty years while working at the Institute for Advanced Study. In addition to pie eating and recitation contests, there is an annual Einstein look-alike contest.
