Scammer pretending to be in Palestine v2
This post has been remade with better info! Please go to this one:
Got an ask from someone claiming to be in Palestine needing mutual aid? Unfortunately there is a scammer going around and it’s likely the ask you got sent is the same one being sent by multiple accounts who target users interacting with Palestine posts. These blogs use the text/images off a real fundraiser and then post it here pretending to be the person it’s made for. Their accounts are usually only a few days old and they don’t interact beyond the ask/follow. Lately they might make the link to their PayPal account in different colors or claim their GoFundMe is pending so you will assume the real one is theirs. They don’t have any GoFundMe’s set up. They steal from them. If you need proof of something being stolen, searching the text of their post in a search engine should pull up the source. If you know how to report PayPal accounts, please report those used by the scammers.
(Moved to new list)
Below is a growing list of fake/stolen names used across the accounts:
Nour Samar | maryline lucy | Fred Odhiambo | Jeff Owino | Valentine Nakuti | Conslata Obwanga | JACINTA SITATI | David Okoth | Martín Mutugi | Daudi Likuyani | William Ngonyo | Fred Agy | George Ochieng | BONFACE ODHIAMBO | Sila Keli | John Chacha | benson komen | Alvin Omondi | Jacinta Sitati | Daudi Likuyani | Noah Keter | Faith Joram | Rawan AbuMahady (any PayPal’s using this name are scammers who have stolen it off a real GoFundMe. The real person does not have a PayPal account that they post on tumblr.) | Asnet Wangila | Remmy Cheptau
Keep in mind this post isn’t saying all accounts asking for mutual aid in Palestine are scams. Rather, this post is meant to bring awareness of a scammer stealing money from those who really need it by pretending to be a person in Palestine. To report scams, use this:
Report -> Something else -> Illegal uses or Content -> Phishing

gaza scam warning
Hey gamers, recently there have been a number of scam blogs on tumblr claiming to be Gazan victims. They've been making a number of iterations of the exact same blog and story but with different names and sometimes different PayPal links.
Thus far, the content of these scams are being stolen from 2 real fundraisers. Please lend your aid to these people who need help instead of the disgusting scam farm
Help Haya Orouq's family escape Gaza
Help Rawan AbuMahady's family escape Gaza
These are examples within the past month which have been deleted.

Donation scams on tumblr are extremely common and anyone who has a tumblr account will encounter them at some point. You have likely encountered them before and not realized it. They throw together a brand new blog with a story of needing aid, then use bots to go through follow lists and post notes to send messages to random users. Scambusting blogs like kyra45 do a lot of work to track and call out these scams when they surface.
Scam Spotting Tips
They send an ask often accompanied with a follow despite having never interacted with you before. Ask yourself: How did you find your blog? These interactions usually come out of nowhere when you have no original posts or interests they could've found you through, because they're just going down the lists of random blogs.
They reblog just enough posts to make you think that their blog is in-use when it is actually only a day or a few old. Enable timestamps and try find the blog's oldest post; if a blog seems old but still seems suspicious, be wary of post backdating
They often disable or delete comments on their donation post to hide comments that call them out. Open the notes and see if it says "some replies have been hidden, blocked or removed." Blocked/hidden comments sometimes still appear in reblogs of a post but not the original, so open a random reblog and see if telling comments appear there.
It isn't unusual for the story and the ask to either be exact copy-pastes of each other, or otherwise have very telling suspicious details, such as: using different names, having different goal amounts, contrasting story details, etc. Pay attention to and trust the suspicion of details that stand out as odd.
Like many of the above examples, they often use an automatically generated username consisting of random words
Reverse image searching can be a helpful giveaway if it works, but don't trust it entirely - scammers often steal images from private Facebook groups/profiles or alter the images so that people don't find the source. An image not having a source should also be suspicious, as you should wonder why this person's social media presence is exclusively a 3 day old tumblr blog
When you receive an ask from a blog like this, reporting them for spam or phishing and reporting the PayPal account for fraudulent activity does help get these accounts taken down.
In name of the situation, here are great verified resources to support real people who need help:
Many organizations and gofundmes for Gaza
Verified fundraisers for individuals in Gaza put together by @palestineasdiqa on Instagram and Twitter
Click to donate for free using ad revenue
Participation and political resources for US, UK and Canada

here's some advice for people new to tumblr i haven't seen around our parts yet... a very, very common current scam on this site to get some money out of folks is as follows:
You receive a message like the below, asking for a signal boost for a donation post pinned on their page; this is almost always for a pet.
Tumblr media
You check their page and it all looks legit. They have an icon/pfp, a bunch of reblogs rather than an empty blog, the pinned post has candid cat/dog/etc photos that look convincing, and there's a link to a normal looking gofundme in a lot of cases, with similarly realistic photos. They didn't even ask you to publish the ask specifically, they just want you to consider reblogging.
…but if you scroll down far enough, it turns out there's only like a week worth of random reblogs, no real other posts and no interaction with anyone else on the site. Which isn't in and of itself an issue- everyone joins Tumblr at SOME point- but maybe a red flag?
Inevitably, when you reverse image search the pet photos, they were nabbed off instagram or facebook or twitter or something. It's a scam.
I was getting 2-3 of these a week at one point, and all of them were convincing, probably because I doubt any of them were bots. this is a really common scam but not nearly as easily spotted as obviously automated phishing attempts; don't publish or donate to these. they're hoping your sense of sympathy, generosity and even guilt will override your suspicion at a rando asking you for money. delete 'em.
i just bring this up because i'm seeing a couple people in tf fandom getting these asks and going 'hey, signal boost!!!'' and while it's a very kind impulse... yeah, it's overwhelmingly scams, folks. sorry.

Y’all I think another fanfic scam is going around.
Tumblr media
[img id: a message from account avawhite inviting me to sign up for ifanfiction.com]
ifanfiction.com is a real site, but when you investigate it, there is a home page stating that their most popular genres are BTS, Werewolf, Billionaire, and Mafia using AI art as cover photos for the genre. It claims that there are 100,000+ stories published with 100 million readers. However if you try to click on any of the genre title cards, it doesn't take you to any actual writing. They also claim to have "professional editors", "fanfic community", and "work respected". The logo they used for fanfic community was a head with AI written inside it which does not inspire confidence.
Going to the authors page, there are a few paragraphs about what the benefits of writing for this site which sound like they were written by AI. They say you can also publish original fiction on that site and they will give you “fixed royalty share and bonuses from the income”. They make sure to say that all fanfic is free on their site, but later claim that users are paying to use the site. The only way to sign up as a writer is to either email the address in the screenshot above, or if you go to author.ifanfiction.com. However upon poking around the author page, there was no TOS. There also does not seem to be a sign up page to be a reader.
I followed the link to their facebook group, and found that there is only one member who is the admin. There are no posts, and the group was not created until December 14, 2023.
I investigated the tumblr that messaged me. This is what their blog page looks like.
Tumblr media
As you can see it is blank like a bot page is. I also checked out their likes. There were only two and both were fic collection posts. They follow 8 people, 7 of whom have updated in the last day and the other updated a month ago. So it’s clear that they are active accounts which is likely how they were followed.
All of this seems really sketchy. I make no claims as to what the site is actually attempting to do, but it seems like it’s a combo of email phishing and AI scraping. I would not recommend trusting this site with any of your work, fanfic or original.

Chapter 5. Hunting Season
A beginner’s guide to the bot infestation
So you may or may not have noticed but tumblr has a bot problem.
These bots follow accounts and like posts but aren’t run by real people. How can you spot a bot? Here are the things you need to look at:
the profile picture
Bots are obviously not accounts run by people so they usually don’t have a profile picture or have a profile picture of a random woman.
the title
Most bots will have untitled blogs and a default header image. If they aren’t untitled then they have a typical feminine name for the title..
The posts
Bots also for the most part don’t have posts on their blogs. If they do then the posts are mostly porn with phishing links underneath.
I know this goes without saying but DO NOT CLICK THESE LINKS!
Here is a usual bot’s blog:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
without posts:
Tumblr media
So what should you do about these bot followers? Report and block them! This is how:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After that the staff should be on it eventually (they don’t have very impressive response time) but still, it will be down eventually.
I know you might be tempted to report them several times to get them taken down faster but don’t! It will clog up their system, so just wait until they take it down.
More advice here!

Tumblr Scams
Hey everyone, it is really important to donate when it comes to causes aiding those facing genocide in Palestine, to those who need medical assistance and/or help escaping, but if someone 1. (most common) Sends you an Ask asking you to donate to them and/or reblog their pinned post, or 2. (less common) Spam tags you and tons of others in a post asking for donations for them, it is a scam. They always have real looking accounts, but they are always scams. And their Ask or pinned post explaining their situation may sound absolutely real, because they often steal directly from actual people who need the help, copying their words. It is disgusting beyond words that people are using the plights of those facing actual genocide to trick people into giving them money, and I hope they rot. If you receive an ask from someone asking to donate or reblog their pinned post, report them for phishing and explain that it is a scam in the description box. Fortunately, the scammer that contacted me deactivated their tumblr within minutes of me calling them out, but not all of them do. So be careful.
If you can donate - find legitimate sources, seek out the many sources being shared. But I need you to know that people using the tactics above are scams, they are known and proven tactics of scams, and you cannot donate to them.

Okay. Looks like it's that time of year again, when scammers may be wandering Tumblr, claiming to have sick pets. This is an unfortunate phenomenon that's gone around before, but I just got hit with a real suspicious request for donations, so I figure I should point out the things that made me suspicious:
An hour ago, I get an ask out of the blue from a blog that just followed me minutes before that. A sob story about a cat that's sick, specifies there's a mass on the cat's leg. It asks for messages or private ask responses.
Tumblr media
I go and look at the blog. It has a bio and header, but that's where genuine-looking behavior ends. The blog started posting one day ago. It's reblogged Staff a bunch, some trending topics, mostly Barbie and Zelda. No tags, no original posts.
It then created and then reblogged a post about a sick cat four times in quick succession, before continuing to reblog fandom fandom fluff. The post says the cat is struggling to breathe, and makes no mention of the mass on the cat's leg. Its phrasing implies the person has been here for some time, but, again, blog started posting within the same day as this message. The post was then pinned:
Tumblr media
The post contains a paypal.me link. I did not click on this, because you cannot be sure whether they'll actually send you to paypal, or to a phishing site. Putting the username into paypal.me returns a valid link, with a profile picture featuring... someone with a completely different cat.
Tumblr media
Look. There are people out there who do in fact have sick pets and need help caring for them. Everyone feels sympathy for a sick pet. Scammers know this, and have a proven history of using this formula to raise cash from people who want to help someone who's struggling. For example: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2022/10/20/fact-check-identical-injured-dog-posts-viral-scam/10480235002/
I reported the blog for phishing, the closest category I could figure out which allowed me to explain why it was reported.
if this ask actually came from a real, genuine person, buddy, you are engaging in some extremely disingenuous-looking behavior. Stay safe out there everybody, and, unfortunately, stay skeptical.

Hello there! Just wondering if its okay for you to check the post i pinned and reblog/boost it? Im in desperate need of help im really sorry for coming across your inbox (pls answer this privately) only if its ok 😞 thank you and stay safe
Hi everyone! This is a scam. And a great opportunity to show you all how to find that out.
These types of scams typically take a very specific form:
A blog that's only a few days old follows you. (Check!)
They have a couple reblogs and a blog description to make you think they're real. (Check!)
They send you an ask requesting that you reblog their pinned post, which is a heart wrenching story about a very cute dog or cat that requests donations via paypal (Check!)
They tell you to answer their ask privately (Check!)
The stars have aligned --this is very likely a scam! But the cat is so cute and the story is so sad, how can we be sure this is fake?
You could do a reverse image search on the pictures of the cat, but that doesn't work on more veteran scammers that have learned where to find images that don't show up in a search. In fact, this particular scammer is using the time-tested method of totally co-opting a real person's struggle to bilk money from strangers!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You'll notice there's no Tamie Wilcox mentioned here. The real Felix is at home and doing much better as of July 10th.
The best tactic to take here is to Google the PayPal username. In this case: tamiewlcx
If the Google results look like this, we've got a scammer.
Tumblr media
A good rule to follow is to ALWAYS be suspicious of donation posts. I only reblog posts from people I've known and trusted for a long time. It's also a red flag if someone tells you to answer their ask privately.
Could a donation post that asks you to answer privately be real? Sure! That's why it's important to dig a bit deeper. It's tempting to just reblog their post and be done with it, but if you actually want to help the person or animal at the center of a request like this, you need to do your due diligence.
And don't forget to report the account that sent you the ask! Here's how:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(phishing typically refers to a slightly different type of scam, but Tumblr is a garbage website that doesn't have a better option)
Tumblr media
This user has unfortunately been doing this for a little while and has made at least $20 if the comments on their pinned post are anything to go by. The real Felix could have used that money instead.
Keep your wits about you!

cat one's back like i said they would try
LET'S BREAK IT DOWN!
Tumblr blog @itscaneetownn says "Snowflake" is "Sick". But... is this for real?
Tumblr media
So the vet bill does very much say "Northeast Indiana". The vet is in Fort Wayne, which coincidentally I've been to Fort Wayne. The paypal address?
Tumblr media
Well, that's interesting. The country code says it's for the Philippines. That seems like a very long drive if you're taking your cat to Indiana. Hell, it's so long of a drive you'd be driving over the literal Pacific Ocean.
"Okay, but what does this 'back' business mean?" Exactly what it sounds like!
Tumblr media
Got this screenshot from uhhh, let's check the properties in explorer... Wednesday Oct 4th. Same thing! Interesting. That was for...
Tumblr media
This! "I thought the cat's name was Snowflake?" Well, that probably isn't the current cat's name either, tbh. But we don't know, because
THIS PERSON IS NOT THE OWNER OF THE CAT. It's the same vet bill being used over and over.
You can report scammers for phishing, btw, as that's what tumblr's report system considers this.

Scammer pretending to be a Palestinian v3
Updated post here!
Now running their scam for about 2 months straight, this scammer is known to take their posts from real GoFundMe’s (Examples of used content) and reuse them as their own even going as far as impersonating the real Palestinian who created the original fundraiser. One of the common tactics is that you’ll get their asks if you regularly share Palestine content on your blog. Please check to see how old the pinned post is and see if you find its contents elsewhere if you search part of the post in a preferred search engine. Be aware that the scam accounts listed here are not the owners of any GoFundMe’s and will usually claim they have one pending. Their pfps are almost always images stolen off the fundraisers too.
This post has been remade with better info! Please find it here:
And here is a growing list of names the scammer has used. These may often be reused for different scams later on so keep an eye out for them when you get asks from relatively new accounts:
Nour Samar | maryline lucy | Fred Odhiambo | Jeff Owino | Valentine Nakuti | Conslata Obwanga | JACINTA SITATI | David Okoth | Martín Mutugi | Daudi Likuyani | William Ngonyo | Fred Agy | George Ochieng | BONFACE ODHIAMBO | Sila Keli | John Chacha | benson komen | Alvin Omondi | Jacinta Sitati | Daudi Likuyani | Noah Keter | Faith Joram | Rawan AbuMahady (any PayPal’s using this name are scammers who have stolen it off a real GoFundMe. The real person does not have a PayPal account that they post on tumblr.) | Asnet Wangila | Remmy Cheptau | HAMDI AHMED | Johy Chacha | Aisha Mahmood | Salima Abdallah | Raha Habib | JOSEPH AYUGI
How to report scam accounts: Report -> Something Else -> Illegal uses or Content -> Phishing
Please keep in mind this post isn’t to say all Palestine mutual aid blogs are scams! Rather, this post is meant to explain that there is a scammer pretending to be one and stealing posts from real ones. They will always reblog only a few Palestine posts and then reblog nothing else aside from answering asks.
If you happen to find a new one, please let me know! This is a new version of the previous one.

A quick reminder on how to spot a pet donation scam
Check the date of the pinned post. Is it a week old or only a few hours old? If timestamps are not on, tap/click the ‘…’ tab to see the exact date of posting. This will show you how old the post is. If it’s only a few hours old, take caution.
Check the other reblogged posts. Are they tagged or are they mass reblogged from only the OP? This usually shows someone is only sharing posts from a trending tag and are not interacting with other accounts. They may follow users but are not sharing their posts. Scammers like to share trending posts several times in order to look legitimate and hope no one scrolls too far down.
[tumblr] search the username. Don’t Google it. Please. Google rarely will show you what your looking for in this case and may misguide you into thinking the account is legitimate. [tumblr] search works just fine for looking up scam alerts. If none show up, the account likely is too new for any warnings. You can also search their Paypal name to see if anything shows up that relates to being a scam.
Did the ask request you to answer privately? Scammers want anonymity and don’t want anyone to find them. Their post is public. There is no reason to want the ask to be private. This is an attempt to hide how many other users have been sent the same ask. You can tumblr search the ask and see if it shows up sent to other blogs. The asks usually use emojis like 🙏 and ❤️ and even 🐈 and 😢.
If there’s a vet bill, does it match the country listed in the PayPal? Hover over the link/press and hold over it to see what the address bar says. If the post is USD it should say US or something similar. If it is something like PH, it’s likely a scammer. Legitimate PH addresses do exist! But they will usually provide a currency conversion in the post if their referring to USD. Also check the photos closely and see if the story doesn’t match up. Scammers like to mix and match a real post.
If your still unsure, ask the blog to provide more info about their pet and to write their name on a paper. Then tell them to put the paper on the pet and take a picture and post it. If they block you, without answering a legitimate concern, it’s a scammer.
Warn anyone whose shared the scam post and report the scam blog for phishing. Phishing is another kind of scam, but currently that is the only way to deal with scam accounts.

hey, just a heads up, got a dm from someone called chichipooh who was trying to invite me to join what seems to be an app called “mascot” as a verified writer. i don’t know why they would ask me - mascot appears to be a roleplay platform and i pretty definitively Don’t RP these days - but given that it was an app and i’m unwilling to download things from the app store based on the word of random tumblr dms i couldn’t check more information about it than what was on the app store. they did seem to have done enough research to at least know i did writing about minecraft, and to come in starting by complimenting my characterization and asking if they could ask me a question about it, reads more like a real person targeting people than a bot targeting people, but still clearly targeted. blog when i then went to check was empty except for like, four likes of random anime art. soon as they lead into the pitch for joining some app i turned them down and blocked them, obviously, but this reads like... if not targeted phishing (which app SEEMS to be real so maybe not phishing), targeted some kind of marketing, so like... be on the lookout for that i guess??? i don’t trust this kind of thing.
and if you’re someone who for some reason thinks its a good idea to pitch me something in dms: don’t?????

You know, the real evil villain is whoever's been making these naked tag spam bot accounts and filling up the your tags section with unsolicited porn.
I mean, they aren't even relevant to the tags, and as far as I can tell it's exclusively of conventionally attractive pale skinned cis women! Don't they even know the kinda people who go on Tumblr? Surely they'd get more clicks for their phishing scam or whatever it is with a bit more 👏diversity👏
Also TOS, or whatever

Heyyaaaah? 🙏 I know this isn't the best time to ask for help but is it okay if you could pleaseee boost/share the post I did for my cat? I pinned it on my blog, if you have an extra time please check it out. Im so sorry, i just dont know what else to do :(( hoping you'd consider to help just by even spreading the word. Please send me a msg to reply or answer the ask privately and I hope you're having an amazing day! 🙏 ❤ ❤
you should like, die for real or something, idk. you're fucked up man.
report their post as: Unlawful uses of content -> Phishing as this is what scams are supposedly lumped under for Tumblr reports, thanks gang! :)
Red flags to look out for as always:
Brand new blog created very recently, often with a couple of days worth of reblogs from one or two selected tags.
Sends you an ask requesting that you share their donations post.
Requests money to be sent friends/family -- this doesn't automatically mean a post is illegitimate, but this scammer knows what they are doing in asking that you not mark your donations as a purchase, because they know they will be charged back and shut down if you do.
Requests a private response.
Reuses information and photos from previous scams, photos initially stolen from a possibly legitimate post elsewhere
Scammers are getting smarter but they're still stupid as fuck for what they do. It's easy to be smarter than them by paying attention to what posts you share. Can YOU or someone you know closely vouch for the person who is asking you to share their donations post? If not, you should be scrutinizing the post and account before sharing.
Remember that you are the first and last line of defense between yourself and your well-intentioned followers and do not share posts from scammers!
