I think I just somehow recently found an Interesting Platonic Trope here.

pete's dragon is a fucking fever dream of a movie and tbh i'm surprised disney even still acknowledges it. the first like six minutes straight is just the stereotypically redneck villains singing about all the child abuse they wanna inflict. speaking of which this movie is 90% songs and only one of them is kinda memorable. the vast majority of the film is singing and avoiding animating the dragon. because pete keeps telling the dragon to turn invisible and then is confused as to why people don't believe that the dragon is real. said dragon drinks alcohol at one point. one of the major characters is an alcoholic and this is only funny and never once presented as concerning. that character is mickey rooney btw. his daughter thinks that both he and her new adoptive son are hallucinating the same dragon and just kinda lets them live in delusions cause idk. all the fish in town disappear for no given reason and everyone in the film blames the random kid who wandered in a day ago. he goes to school and gets slapped with a ruler for misbehaving onscreen. the redneck villains show up like an hour after we last mentioned them so that we can have another song about child abuse and then the dragon scares them off (which he??? couldn't do before because????) also jim dale comes in an hour into the film as the comedic villain and he's fucking great at it but also he does basically nothing but set up one half of the climax which is solved easily. he has a comedic sidekick and the two of them plan to literally rip the cute lil dragon to shreds and use his parts for fake medicine. they have a song about how they wanna use each body part. you know, for the kids in the audience to think about. now that i think about it, i think these villains only interacted with pete like twice despite taking up half the movie's screentime and the second time was in aforementioned half a climax. the other half of the climax is about the adoptive mom's boyfriend that we're supposed to care about because the award-bait song was about him for some reason. said boyfriend comes back and says that offscreen he had amnesia for a year and then the dragon hit him upside the head and he was fine so don't worry about it. then in 2016 they remade this movie and the literal only way they could make it normal was to make it an in-name only adaptation set in a time period seventy years later, changing all of the character names except for the ones in the title, and cutting all the songs that made up most of the og film's runtime.

anyway. 10/10
