Boom has, of course, reignited Kerblam! discourse, because we live in a cold and uncaring universe. So of course, I'm going to talk about it, because, again, apparently I don't know when to quit.
And look, if you like Kerblam!, I get it. Like genuinely, I do understand why people would like it more than me, taste varies and doctors differ as a wise man once said.
But I have seen at least one person try and push back against what they see as the undue focus on "The systems aren't the problem" by saying "Well, that scene comes before Kira has been killed by the System," to which I would like to humbly and with all the kindness in the world... no, it doesn't.
Like I don't want to come across as some sort of Ben Shapiro-esque "According to facts and logic..." edgelord because I have nothing but disdain for those fuckwits, but on a basic factual level you have made an incorrect claim about the episode. The scene in which Kira dies leads *directly* into the scene where the Doctor says "The systems aren't the problem." Ryan's first line in the scene is literally "Kira's dead." To say that the Doctor is unaware of Kira's death at the hands of the System when she says "The systems aren't the problem" is incorrect.
This isn't some unpardonable sin, and I don't wish to ascribe deliberate malice to this error because that does nobody any good and I'm sick and tired of fandom discourse. But, y'know, it's there, and it's weird.
Why can some people not just like Kerblam! without telling falsehoods about the episode in its defence, inadvertently or otherwise? It's OK to like things while also conceding that they have problems, but fandom in general tends to have some problems with this.
It's not enough to like Kerblam! even in spite of the fact that its politics might not be the most sound ever devised - and frankly, while I love it, Doctor Who has some recurrent ethical blind spots that severely limit how often it can truly be cast as anything within a million miles of "revolutionary" - no, Pete McTighe has to be the second coming of Karl Marx.
It's not enough to enjoy The Talons of Weng-Chiang on some level for its good parts while conceding that it is a fundamentally racist text. No, it must be a wholly blameless piece of art that some hissy SJWs are trying to take away from "real fans" who can see clearly that the biggest problem here is a dodgy rat costume.
What is my point here? I honestly don't know. I have, frankly, next to zero interest in becoming a recurring character in the Kerblam! Discourse Cinematic Universe, but I was nevertheless struck by a weird trend of (if I'm being charitable, and I generally like to be where I can) unconscious pseudo-revisionism of a controversial episode.
Alright, nothing to see here, please disperse.

Pete McTighe Confirms That Praxeus Originally Brought Back the Autons
Pete McTighe Confirms That #DoctorWho Praxeus Originally Brought Back the Autons
Writer, Pete McTighe has confirmed that his Doctor Who Series 12 episode, Praxeus, originally brought back the Autons. When a story focuses on the dangers of plastic, it’s only natural that fans immediately think of the Autons — living plastic, stirred into being by the Nestene Consciousness –and McTighe has shed some light on initial plans for the Thirteenth Doctor story: “Originally, that was…

Thinking about what wouldve made kerblam! better and it made me realise that a lot of people miss a critical fact when criticising this episode, and that is that Charlie's actions would not have made things better. His goals were not anti-capitalist
I see people saying all the time that this episode is propaganda, implying that anyone who wants to change the system is bad, and i think that's almost a fair criticism, except if Charlie had achieved his goal it wouldn't have improved their situation, or ended capitalism. It would just mean more people have jobs.
Ironically I think the real problem with Kerblam is that the episode essentially ends with them doing what charlie wanted (making Kerblam have more human workers). It's like they got so close to hitting the mark but were so focused on the central topic of automation that they forgot to address the underlying issues they had originally highlighted.
If I were to change Kerblam i would have them acknowledge that people shouldn't need jobs, but since that's not something easily fixed, instead they'd focus on improving working conditions for the people they do hire

these tags on whoify’s kerblam post are kind of cracking me up. a.) kerblam came out FIVE YEARS before that deal took place. even if they were in talks at that point, which i doubt, they wouldn’t have had the power to do that. b.) that’s not even what the deal is — disney has not “taken over” doctor who, they have distribution rights. c.) and this is the funniest part to me — do you know who DID have partial distribution rights for dr who in the us at the time? fucking amazon.
i say this not as a defense of disney or anything, fuck em, but as a reminder that they are not (at least not yet) singularly to blame for all the problems of capitalism in the world and it is not productive to act like they are & that any problems with the show are their fault. it doesn’t matter who owns OR distributes doctor who, disney, amazon, or the fucking bbc, they’re all capitalists and they’re all trash.
i don’t know whose fault kerblam is! i don’t know if it was pete mctighe, chris chibnall, or some corporate exec who made the decision to have it be Like That, but based on the politics of the rest of the chibnall era i must say it’s not an outlier.

To give my general 13 Who feelings since I asked:
Ryan was my favorite Chibnall era companion though I suspect Tosin probably felt pretty burned by lack of material and hope he's on to better things that make him happier. He's quite a good actor IMO. Makes a lot of interesting choices when left to the background.
Dan and Graham were both quite charming but just not character types I need from stories right now. Dan also really suffered from not getting, like, any breathing room as a character. It ends up feeling like after Brian Williams, Chibnall needed a comfort older white dude in the TARDIS.
Yaz I like on paper but never felt like she got the focus or exploration the many interesting things about her deserved. Can You Hear Me was a very clever retcon to explain her lack of material in series 11 in addition to being poignant though it does totally change her from the character introduced in Woman Who Fell to Earth.
I like the idea of the Timeless Child and the opportunities it offers and relate a surprising amount to the whole forgotten child childhood trauma questions about identity, but think it stalled on examining that after the quite underrated Once, Upon Time.
Sacha Dhawan is a superb actor who elevated a lot but I did not care at all for the direction the Master was taken in. The lack of acknowledgment of Missy was painful, the Nazi stuff doubly so, and the redestriction of Gallifrey just annoying.
Jodie Whittaker is wonderful and very Doctory. I wish she could have played more range though and really wanted to see her play a fuller relationship plot because I love the Doctor in that kind of thing and think she'd have nailed it.
Loved the sonic. Didn't love the TARDIS. Liked series 12, apart from Spyfall part 2. Thought Resolution and Eve of the Daleks were fantastic. Complicated feelings about Flux and how it all in my view fell apart (well documented that Chibnall wrote it while it went and it shows). Thought series 11 was the right idea but didn't think it was good enough overall.
Really enjoyed writers like Vinay Patel, Ed Hime, Joy Wilkinson, Maxine Alderton, and Nina Metivier contributing, and even controversially Pete McTighe, though I wish they got a bit more polish the way RTD or Moffat added sparkle to their guest writers. It's probably not fair to expect Chris Chibnall to meet the dialogue crispness of two of the best living British TV writers who proceeded him. It's not that he's bad, but Moffat and Davies are really special talents on that front and a tough act to follow.
Thought the best director of the era was Nida Manzoor and hope they get her back. Also loved Wayne Yip again but sounds like he didn't love doing it.
Some episodes and elements I really liked but overall the era of modern Who I'm coolest on. Still would take it over several classic runs any day.

In order to watch Doctor Who without losing your mind you’ve got to get used to the token “sweet and innocent optimist who dies” in nearly every episode but I STILL can’t get over Kira from Kerblam! like Pete McTighe is so sick and twisted for that.
Tumblr media
Honourable mentions of other dead cuties go to Raffallo (The End of The World), Gwyneth (The Unquiet Dead), Lynda with a Y (Bad Wolf/Parting Of The Ways), Ursula (Love And Monsters), ChanTho (Utopia), Miss Evangelista (Silence In The Library/Forest Of The Dead), Isabella (Vampires In Venice), Jennifer (The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People) and Lorna (A Good Man Goes To War).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am such a sucker for this trope and I especially adore Gwyneth and Miss Evangelista <3
There are probably more in series 8-13 that I’ve missed but I don’t own series 8 and 9 and I’m currently at series 11 in this rewatch. I’ve noticed that in the Moffat era there are quite a few characters who fit into this archetype but don’t die in the end (what a surprise), my favourite of which is Ada Gillyflower from The Crimson Horror. I love Ada so much and I wish she’d gotten to travel with the Doctor even just for one episode, she deserves to have grand adventures with her Monster after having such an awful life and mum.
Anyway this sort of turned into a dead babygirl appreciation post but someone’s gotta love them!!!
