You open your eyes and looked around. You're not in your room. When you remember where you are, a smile forms on your lips. You feel a bare chest attached to your back and a tanned arm circle around your waist. You smile and turn to face the latter.
You cup his cheek and rub your thumb in his jaw. He smiled in his sleep.
"Good Morning, Captain Mitchell" Maverick smiled and tightened his grips on your waist. He then lay on his back and brought you to his chest. You let out a squeal.
"Babe, I'm gonna be late" You muttered in his chest. Maverick let out a sigh and kiss your hair. "Good Morning to you too, Sweetheart" He muttered in your hair.
You kiss his chest, trailing up to his neck to his cheek. You swung your legs and straddle his waist. The cover on your body falls to your butt.
Maverick let out a giggle when you peppered his neck with a kiss. "Okay okay okay, it's tickle now". You lift your head and give him a mischievous smile."Oh, is it?". You bend down and suck his chest hard until it left a purple mark. You trailed to his neck and suck a purple mark in there too. Maverick let out a moan and grunt, unaware of what you do. When you lift your head and grinned at him, he looked at the marks you just make.
"What!?, (Y/N)..." He groaned and rub the mark on his chest to make them gone, but it's useless.
"It looks nice, though. It will remind them, who you belong to" you bite your lip and stared at him. Maverick rolled his eyes and snake his arms on your waist. He lifts his body and sits down so you're on his lap now, he tucks your body close to him so your chest is touched by his.
"Okay, so you have to be reminded too who you belong" you let out a squeal when Maverick flipped you so you're underneath him. Maverick then kiss your neck and give them a soft suck. He kiss down to your chest and took your nipple in his mouth.
You let out a moan when his hand trailed down to your womanhood. He lift his head from your chest and looked at you with lust. "Last round before going to work?". You nodded and Maverick leaned down to capture your lips.
He opens your legs and you two continue your activity last night.
****
You're in the kitchen, flipping the pancake when you feel a pair of strong arms wrapped around your waist. You smile when you feel Maverick kiss your cheek.
"It smells nice here" he muttered on your neck and give them delicate kisses.
"It's just pancake and bacon" you tilt your neck to the side and Maverick peppered kiss in there. He brought your hair to the other side to give him more access to your neck. "Everything you make is good. Including you" his hand trailed to your breast to massage them. He then begins to give your neck soft sucks. His grey Navy shirt you wearing and you tuck into your Jeans, he begins to lift it. Your eyes fluttered closed and you let out a shaky breath at his actions.
"No, Mav. I have to go to work". You stopped his hand before he can unbutton your jeans. Maverick steps back and you turn off the stove before turning around to face him.
"Why? We still have time" He frowned. You cup his cheek and give his lips a peck. "Hondo called me five times while we were in the shower. "
"What happens?" He furrowed his eyebrows. His arms snake to your waist and brought you closer to him.
You circle your arms to his neck and begin to play with the hair on the nape of his neck. "He said he wants to talk about the project." You shrug. "So, I have to go now, and you can't come late today. Today is important" Maverick smiled and leaned down to give your lips a chaste kiss.
"I know. I even mark it on my calendar" he begins to sway you and rest his forehead on you. "So, you're not going to catch a ride with me then?"
"I'm sorry baby" you give him puppy dog eyes. The one that'll make him weak on the knees. "Besides, you still have to fix that Mustang though. You promise to take me on a ride"
"I still can give you a ride in there even though it's still not fixed" Maverick give you a teasing smile.
"Pervert" You snorted.
"What you mean Pervert? We don't have to fly, just take the plane for a joy ride around this place. No need to be flying" His smile is bigger now because he caught you on guard. You scoffed and kiss his lips one more time before entangling yourself from him.
"Love you, Maverick" you open his trailer door and walked toward his living room in his shop, you take your Dark Blue Denim Jacket with a lot of Navy patches.
"Love you too Sweetheart" He called out from his door. You smiled and blew him a kiss. You walked toward your car and slipped into your Jacket in the process.
Before you can open your car door, Maverick called you out. "Wait, (Y/N)!" He jogs up to you, when he's in front of you, he cups your cheek and kisses you hard on the lips. You smile and kiss him back and cup his cheek with one hand.
"For good luck" He pulled away and give you one last peck.
He kisses your forehead and muttered, "I love you". You smile and kiss his cheek. "I love you too"
He opens the car door for you and gives you a wave when you pull back your car, you take a turn and blow him a kiss and wave before leaving his sight.
Maverick smile and shake his head. He let out a happy sigh and walked back to his trailer. His day with you is always the best day he has. He acted like a horny teenager whenever he was with you. He always wants to touch you, kiss you, and wrap you in his arms. He doesn't want you to leave his side. This year has been great for him, and no one can ruin that.
Your relationship with Maverick hit two years now and he doesn't want to replace it even if the world depends on it.
He loves you so much that it makes his heart beat so fast whenever he is near you.
You met him during one of the Jet programs you lead. He's one of the pilots that'll gonna test your project.
Despite your Father warning about Navy Men and you decided you didn't want to involve with their kin, Maverick manage to knock down your walls about this. You begin dating him after six months of turning down his date offer.
When your Dad found out, he didn't like it. He thought Maverick is too old for you and he was just some Navy Brat that always gonna make himself and you in trouble. So he cut Maverick from the program but his guardian angel manages to take him back again. Your dad even tries to send you across the world but somehow Maverick manage to be in the same program again with you.
Until this day, your dad didn't like him and try everything to separate you two. But Maverick always have his way to close with you again. He doesn't have a problem with your age difference with Maverick, he and your mom too have huge age differences. It's just, He Doesn't Like Mavericks.
When he assigned you to lead his new program to build a new Jet Plane, he didn't know you will have Maverick as the tester pilot. He tries to send Maverick to another program, but again, Maverick always have his way too close to you, his guardian angel, once again, helps him to secure his place in this program.
But not today, this day your dad has a perfect plan to make Maverick go away from your life, including the Navy, for good.
***
When Maverick arrived at the Hangar,  he saw Hondo and CWO for this project gather around beside the Dark Star Plane. Their hushed voice fills with worries.
Maverick park his bike and remove his aviator while he climbed out from his bike, he walked to them with his aviator in hand.
He gave them a small smile despite their worried looked. His day has been great until now, no one can't ruin them. "Hey. What is it? What?" He whipped his head to find any explanation from them.
Hondo pursed his lips "We've been ordered to stand down. They're scrapping the program. They say we fell short. The contract threshold is Mach 10." Hondo shakes his head in disbelief at this situation.
Maverick expression changed to surprise "Mach 10 is supposed to be in two months. Today's test point is Mach 9." Maverick pointed out
"Well, that's not good enough." Hondo shrug.
Maverick bit his lips. "Says who?" He looked at Hondo
"Admiral Cain." One of the CWO answered for him. Maverick tossed his head down and pursed his lips, he know very well who that was. He begins fidgeting with his aviator.
"The drone ranger. He wants our budget for his unmanned program." Hondo explained.
"He's on his way to kill the test and shut us down personally." The CWO added.
Maverick nodded and pursed his lips "Where's (Y/N)?" he asked Hondo.
"In her office" Maverick walked away from them to your office. He knows very well what this project means to you. You spent your entire year making this program works. You slept for three hours when you start building the plane, you even slept in your office to finish the design and just come home two days a week, and it was him that begged you to get some sleep in your home.
You told him that this is your dream to build something, you spent your life just testing weapons or making some designs, but didn't have a chance to build them. That's why he asked Iceman to assign him as a Pilot tester for the Program. To be close to you and to help you make your dream come true.
So he'll make this project work for you and the sake of everyone in this program.
****
Maverick knock at the door but he just heard your sniffles and hiccups. He carefully push the door open and saw you on your chair. Your hands covered your face and the Dark Star sketch was scattered on your desk.
Maverick heart hurt seeing you like this. He walked to your desk and take the chair in front of it. He rolled the chair beside you. He sits down and carefully takes your hand from your face.
"Darling.." he said softly. You sniffed and wipe your tears with your free hand.
"What is wrong with him? He wants me to lead this program, and, when we're close enough to reach the final, he wants to shut it down. Did I do something wrong, Mav? Did this program actually useless? Did I doing it wrong all this time?" You asked him. Maverick brought you to his chest and shush you. You cry again on his shoulder. "No no no, this isn't your fault, darling. You know how he is."
"But it isn't fair. All of these people uphold on this program, we work so hard to reach this point" you sobbed, soaking Mav's jacket. Maverick stroke his thumb on your temple while rubbing your back with the other.
"So we give him what he wants," He said nonchalantly. You stopped crying and lift your head from his shoulder. You looked at him confused. "What?" You cock eyebrows to him.
He cups your face and wipes your tears with his thumb "If he wants Mach 10, we give him Mach 10" he said sternly.
"But it isn't possible Mav. It is supposed to be Mach 9 before Mach 10. I don't even know if she is capable to do it" you shake your head in his grip.
"You have Maverick on your team. Everything is possible" he gives you a smug smile.
"Mav.." you whined. "I mean it. Let's hit the Mach 10, she's ready" He reassured you. He placed both of his hands on your shoulder, he leaned closer and looked at you in the eyes. "Did I ever doubts you these past years?"
"N-no but.." you trailed off. You don't want this, you know what happens to him when he fails this test.
"Trust me, darling. We're gonna hit that Mach 10 he wants so much. And we're gonna slap him with that right in his face" He give you his Cheshire smile, and you broke into a smile. He rests his hand on your cheek and stroke your jaw. "There it is that sweet smile. Don't be sad again, my love. We're gonna be fine" He leaned to kiss you on the forehead.
"I love you." You told him.
"I love you too. C'mon, we should get ready. All of them are waiting for us" Maverick stand up and gives you his hand, you gladly take it and you walked out of your office hand in hand.
****
Maverick sit on the chair while the doctor took his heart data from his body. You stood beside the doctor and read the WCO report about Dark Star.
"Wow, your heartbeat is so strong Maverick," the doctor told him. He glances at you that still focused read the report.
"Yeah, took some strong coffee today" He glance back and clear his throat. He begins to tap his fingers on the arms chair. The doctor raised her eyebrows at him and shake her head with a smile.
***
"Hondo gonna assist you for today, I have to check something on the plane before you use her" You walked in the hallway with Maverick beside you. He suddenly stopped on his track, you stop and cock your eyebrows at him.
"Okay, then give me my Good Luck kiss" He walks to you and leaned down trying to kiss you, but you push him back by his chest.
"Not here, there are too many people here" you jutted your head behind him where people were busy walking back and forth in the hallway. Maverick let out sighs and tug you with him. He brought you to the janitor closet.
He closed the door behind him and kiss you on the lips. You are taken aback by this but kiss him back afterwards. He tugs you closer by the waist and rests your back on the door. He deepened the kiss and You wrap your arms around his neck. You pull back to catch your breath while Maverick tries to catch your lips.
"Why you always so horny" you bit your lip to contain your smile and shook your head.
"I'm not horny, I'm just trying to kiss my girl" he scoffed and leaned down to kiss you again but you put your hand on his chest.
"That it's not a kiss, baby," You give him a chaste kiss on his lips "this is a kiss. That was made out" you brush his hair and looked at him softly.
Maverick bit his lips and smiled. He cock his eyebrows "it's not make out, darling, this is make out" he leaned down and kiss you hard on the lips. He licks your lips to gain access to your mouth, when you open your mouth, Maverick shove his tongue into you. Your make-out session becomes hotter, he massages your breast through your uniform. When he tries to open your trouser,  knocks on the door interrupts him.
"Mav, we ready for your physical test" Hondo's voice muffled behind the door. He pulls back immediately and rests his forehead on your shoulder to calm down himself.
"Yeah, I'll be down in sec" he called out. You lick your lips and played with his hair.
"C'mon captain, there's someone we need to slap in the face," You told him. Maverick then lift his head from your shoulder and kiss your forehead.
***
You sat beside Hondo in the control room. Maverick voice begins to fill the room.
"Control, this is Dark Star. How do you read?"
"Dark star, control.  Loud and clear. How me?" Hondo is gonna lead the test for today while you sat and watched the progress until Admiral Cain is coming.
"Loud and clear. Takeoff precheck's complete. Ready for A.P.U start."
"Ready left engine start. Ready right engine start. Thumbs for taxi." All of the WCOs then give the thumbs up for Hondo "We are ready for taxi." You rest your back in your seat. You folded one of your arms on your stomach and other you raise your fist to your mouth and begin to bite at it.
"Tower, this is dark star. We are taxiing with information Alpha."
"Dark star, you are clear to taxi. Runway 21. Winds 210, 10." The traffic controller gives clearance for Maverick .
"Fuel temps are looking good."
"Control concurs."
"Battery's holding at 95%. The cabin pressure looks good."
"Control concurs."
"Tower, this is dark star. We're ready for takeoff. Requesting an unrestricted climb to 600 and above."
Traffic controller "Dark star, the runway and skies are yours."
You heard on your headphone that Admiral Cain just pulled up on the gate, you stopped fidgeting and looked at Hondo. Hondo looked at you with consent for a sec and looked back to the screen to tell Maverick through the radio.
"Maverick, Cain just pulled up to the gate. It's not too late to stop, buddy. You know what happens to you if you go through with this." Hondo told him.
"I know what happens to everyone else if I don't," Maverick muttered, his mind already set. You saw everyone in the room look at the screen with hope. They're like family to you, working side by side for a year and they've to go back to working in the boring facility while waiting for a new program called to them if this program got shut down.
Hondo tilted his head down. "Dark star is ready for takeoff."
You touch Hondo's hand, he lifts his gaze to you. You nodded at him reassuring him that we should try this. Hondo let out a deep sigh and begin to prepare for take-off.
"Everyone, go for takeoff, starting with the engine."
"Engine, go."
"Thermals, go."
"Fuel, go."
"Electric, go."
"Control surfaces, go."
All of the WCOs cleared Maverick for takeoff. "Dark star, control. You're cleared for takeoff."
You let out a sigh when Maverick takeoff the plane. The real test has started. "Dark star, you are cleared above 600. Increase to Mach 3.5.
"Cleared above 600. Increase to Mach 3.5."
The door to the control room is slammed open and Admiral Cain walked inside, he looked pissed "Admiral. Uh, just in time, sir." Hondo great him. Admiral Cain took off his aviator.
"I'm early. So are you. Care to explain?" He asked harshly. He looked at you, but you glare at him and rolled your eyes. You looked back to the screen in front of you.
"Transitioning to scramjet." The Engines jet roaring.
"Uh, mav, Admiral Cain is asking..." Hondo furrowed his eyebrows
"Ordering." Cain corrects him.
"Ordering that we bring her down."
Maverick then imitates audio distortion "Op... oop... Alpha... three, oh... as sing... ach... Ive... 4, and... within six..." you can see humour on his face. You smile at him and bit your lips to suppress your laugh. Hondo turned to Cain
"This is where we've had trouble with comms, sir. It's the earth's curvature. It's called 'earth bulge.' " All of the WCOs in the room suppress their laugh at Cain's expression that looked pissed and confused.
"Did anyone offer you a coffee?" Hondo ask him, but Cain just raised his eyebrow to him "Okay." Hondo nodded and looked back to the screen.
The sound of the screen beeping reaches all of your attention "He's at Mach 7, pushing 8."
"Flight data?" Hondo asked the WCO
"Receiving. Data is good."
"Temperature's climbing. The response is still stable. We're feeling good."
The screen beeping with the increased speed "Mach 8.8. 8.9. Mach 9."
"He's the fastest man alive," Hondo whispered and shook his head in disbelief.
"Talk to me, goose." Your heartache every time Maverick call Goose's name. You begin fidgeting again in your seat.
The screen beeps every time Mav increase his speed "Mach 9.1. 9.2. Mach 9.3. 9.4. Approaching high hypersonic."
The warning beeps begin to appear "Windshield hot caution." The alarm begins blaring. You almost stand up from your seat. "Surface temp rising." You heard Maverick grunts and gasps. You stand up in your seat and looked closely at the screen. Maverick gasps and shouts out when the speed begins to close to Mach 10.
"Mach 10!" All of you in the room begin to cheer. You hug Hondo and he lifts you from the floor. You give Admiral Cain a smug smile and he rolled his eyes at you.
"Put that in your Pentagon budget!" One of the WCOs shout out to him and Cain whipped his head to him. You snorted and sit down again.
But this is when you begin to panic, Maverick always want to test his limits.
"Don't do it, baby" you muttered to the radio.
"Oh, don't do it. Don't do it." Hondo do the same but Maverick increase the speed to Mach 10.1 "oh shit"
You shook your head and rest your back on the chair. You put your hand on your temple and begin to massage them. At least he hit the Mach 10 he promise you.
"You got some balls, stick jockey. I'll give you that." Cain gritted his teeth and turn to you, he shook his head at you.
The alarm begins to blare and suddenly the screen turns black, lost connection to the plane. You jump on your seat with Hondo. "Maverick. Maverick!" Hondo tries to call him but no response.
Admiral Cain scoffed, he then turn to you "(Y/N), I need to talk to you. In your office" He turns around and leaves the room. People in the room looked at you, but you just give them a tight-lipped smile. You pat Hondo's shoulder and followed Admiral Cain to your office.
****
Admiral Cain sits on your chair in your office. You sit opposite him with your arms crossed.
He looked at the pictures you placed on your des. There's the picture of you, your sister, and him on your graduation day, and your picture with Maverick on your vacation in Bora-Bora, Maverick is shirtless with his black short and you wearing a white bikini. Maverick lift you from the ground, hand resting on your butt and your arms wrapped in his neck. He kisses you on the lips with his aviator still on. The background is sunset in Bora-Bora.
The second picture is you and Maverick kissing in at night in your hotel room with Eiffel Tower in the background.
Admiral Cain turns down your pictures with Maverick. You rolled your eyes at him.
"Congratulations, your program is successful" he rests his elbows on the table.
"Thanks to Maverick. If it weren't for him, maybe my program will be shut down by now" You scoffed at him.
He rests his back on the chair. "I'm not gonna thank that punk" He shook his head.
You tsk and let out a sigh. You place your hand on the table. "Dad, get over it, we've been together for two years now"
"And I still don't like him," He said sternly. You frowned and folded your arms again "You never like every man I date"
"I like that British boy" He shrugs and rests his back again on the chair.
"You threatened him by holding a gun in front of him" you exclaimed. You still remember when your sister told you what your dad doing to that poor boy. He is just a sweet little boy who you met through your physic class. You've been dating for three months back there. Your dad threatened him when he want to pick you up for a date. He run off immediately and cancelled your date that day.
You try to call him, try to talk to him in person but he avoided you. And next week, your friend told you he moved out back to England. You told your sister about this, and she said she saw dad threatening the poor boy by holding a gun in front of him.
You adore your dad, he raised you alone with your sister when your mom passed away when you were three years old. He became a single father with two daughters, and his work in the Navy made it very difficult for him, thanks to his Mom that helps your dad through this. Every time he got deployed, you and your sister gonna stay in your grandma's house. But sadly, your grandma passed away when you were in high school.
You remember crying over to him when he got deployed one day, you don't want with your Grandma or your sister, you just want him. He calm you down before going and make him late for deployment. Because of that, he get a suspended for a week.
"I just give him an example of what happens if he tries to hurt you, sweetheart. And Same goes for him" he pointed out to the frame he turn down.
"And next week he moved out back to England" you retorted. After this, you don't speak to him for a week. It tortures him, and you know that. After that, he agrees to never be involved in your love life again.
But he have his own way to make all of the men especially Navy men will go away from you. He'll make them stationed in the middle of a desert. Or send you to another country for a special mission.
But Maverick, he can't make him stay away from you. He even tries to make him discharged from the Navy, but again, he come back.
He knows who Maverick is. His reputation among every Admiral is not surprising. His relationship with Admiral Benjamin's daughter is always been talked about by every Admiral in the Navy.
But, he knows you're an Adult now. You're 30 years old and can choose what is bad or not for you. But he doesn't want you to end up like Benjamin's daughter.
Maverick tries to gain his trust and he almost falls with it. He gives you the Dark Star program and sends Maverick away to the desert, but somehow, he's back and becomes your tester pilot. And now you've been seeing each other every day for this past year and it's just made you and Mav grew closer.
He knows any of this because he always has his eyes on you.
Cain let out a sigh. "Look, I'm here isn't want to discuss about your love life. I'm here because They need you to test some weapons" he leaned closer and rest his arms on the desk.
"They? Or you?" You lifted your eyebrows to him.
"They, Pentagon, The Navy. They have an upcoming mission in four weeks" He remarked. You looked at him suspiciously. "Where?"
"CVN-71" He shrugs
You looked at him with wide eyes and scoffed "So you'll send me to the middle of Ocean now? Is this your way again to make me and Maverick broke up? Because it will not be happening. I love him dad" you looked at him like a kicked puppy. This is what he is afraid of, his little daughter loves a man beside him. And that man is Maverick. He really should shoot him with one of his drones while he's in Afghanistan.
"No, they really need you now. And I'll not bother you with Captain Mitchell again after this" He said to you softly.
"You said that last time, but you send me to Korea for four months, Dad" You exclaimed. And looked away from him.
Cain then let out a sigh "I mean it this time Sweetie" he said softly. You turn to him and looked at him in the eyes.
"If you mean it, you sign the paper in front of you" you nodded to the brown folder on top of your desk. On the cover is written "Cain Declaration".
He opens the folder and reads what is inside of it. He raised his eyebrows and looked at you. "Okay, if it'll make you believe me" he took your pen from the desk and sign the paper. You smile triumphantly and took the folder when he's done signing the paper. "Good, and try to be nicer with him this time" you stand up from your seat.
"Not happening" he shook his head.
"You just sign this" you pointed to the folder in your hand.
"To accept your relationship with him, not be nice nor like him," he said sternly and pointed to the folder in your hand.
You smirked and pull out a folded paper in your trouser pocket "Op, I forget to tell you. There are two pages in here, where you have to be nice and treat him like your friend. If it's not, I'm gonna brought you to court" you open the door and walked out.
Cain shook his head with your demeanour "I still don't like him" he called out but you already walked away.
***
Maverick is escorted by two men holding guns behind him. You waited for him in the corner outside your office. You rest your back on the wall behind you and tap your foot patiently.
Maverick with his dirty flight suit, helmet in his hand, smiling when he looked at you waiting for him. He jogs up to you.
"Hey.." He stands in front of you and grins. You smile, when he thinks you're gonna hug him, you punch his chest hard. "Don't do that again you freak" he let out grunts and rub the sore part.
"Sorry darling" he gasps, he has to be careful with your punch, you have a good punch. You let out a sigh and wrap your arms around his neck and hug him, not caring about the dirty suit he wears. Mav snakes one arm to your waist and kisses your exposed neck.
The two men that escorted Maverick leaving you to give you sometimes. You know them because they were your Dad soldiers. You met them whenever you visit your dad in his office.
"Is your Dad already waiting for me?" He pull back and looked at you lovingly.
"Yup.." you nodded. Maverick let out a sigh, he tossed his head down and pursed his lips. "What he's gonna do this time, honorably discharge me or send me to another desert?" He lifts his eyebrows.
"I don't know, but I think he wouldn't do that again" you shrug. Maverick cock his eyebrows, confused why your dad didn't want to punish him anymore.
When he wants to ask why, one of the two men that escorted him before appears to inform him. "Sir, Admiral Cain is ready for you"
"I'll tell you later, now, go face him. And don't piss him too much" You pat his cheek. He gives you a cheeky smirk. "I'll try"
"I love you" He kisses your forehead and follows the man to your office.
"I love you too" you called out, he turn back and give you a small.
****
You wait for him in the waiting area near the entrance. When you saw him walk toward you with a smile on his face, you stand up. He placed his helmet on the table and stood in front of you.
"So, what did he say," you ask him. Maverick hug you tight and lift you from the ground, you let out a squeal.
"They called me back to Top Gun," he said happily. You smile nervousness at him. "Oh.."
Maverick frowned and looked at your expression, "hey, I know a nice place where we can live near the beach. We can go there by bike, you said you always want a road trip with me. How does it sound?"
You bit your lips and looked down, Maverick saw this and know something isn't right. He placed his finger under your chin and lift your face to look at him. He saw your sad look "What happens, darling. Talk to me" he cup your face softly.
"Baby, I'll have another mission. They want me to test some weapons for an upcoming mission" you hesitated. Maverick let out a sigh and bite his lips. He shakes his head, he knows is too good to be true.
"Where?" he looked at you again.
"CVN-71" you muttered.
" In the middle of the Ocean! That's too far, how can I reach you? Is this your dad's way to separate us again? Sending me to North Island and you to Ocean?" His face looked hurt. He frowned.
You shake your head and rest your hands on his biceps. "No baby no. I think this mission is really important because my dad would never send me to the middle of the Ocean. He said after this mission he wouldn't budge us again" Maverick sighed and brought you to his arms. You snake your arms to his mid-section and rest your head on his shoulder. He kisses your head and inhales your hair scent.
"He said that last time and send you to Korea" he muttered on your hairline.
"That's why I made him sign that" you turned to the folder on the table 'Declaration of Cain'. Maverick chuckled and just hug you tight  "But I'm gonna miss you"
"I'm gonna miss you too. We still can call or face time" you shrug in his arms.
"Why the world is so cruel. I just wanna be with my girl, have her in my arms every day" he muttered dramatically. You lift your head from his shoulder and wrap your arms in his neck. You smile and rolled your eyes at his frown.
You leaned toward him and kiss him. Maverick smile and gladly kiss you back. He cup your cheeks and deepened the kiss. Your kiss doesn't go further when someone clears their throat. You drift apart and saw your father standing beside you two with a disgust looked on his face.
"(Y/N), your chopper is ready. Your gonna take off now" he nodded at you. Maverick widened his eyes. "Right now!? We didn't even say goodbye" He stood beside you and wrap his arms on your shoulder.
"You already said your goodbye." He told him harshly. Cain then turned to you "C'mon (Y/N)" He walked away to the tarmac where Chopper already waiting.
"I love you, Captain Pete Maverick Mitchell" You smiled at him and hug him one more.

tears stream down your face/when you lose something you can not replace
It’s quiet in the room. Barely lit. The only sound comes from the machine in the corner, from the ventilator keeping his daughter alive, the steady beeping of the machine measuring her heart rate.
He sighs, letting go of her hand and bringing his arm to rest on his knees. His head hangs down, his hands coming up in the gesture of a prayer.
He knows in his heart what he needs to do.
So he steels himself, searching for the strength to be brave just one last time, and be the father she needs him to be.
He takes a deep breath, taking her hand again as he shifts up to brush some of her hair away from her face. He allows his fingers to trail over her face, trying to memorize the way it feels under his calloused fingertips.
He squeezes her hand, hanging his head once more.
“If-” His voice gets caught in his throat and he has to cough to clear it.
Be brave, one more time.
He swallows, nodding to himself.
“If you want to go, I need you to know that it’s going to be okay.”
-
He remembers the first time he held her so clearly.
Maybe now more than ever.
He remembers how quiet it had been in the nursery. It was late at night and he shouldn’t have been there. But Natalie’s birth had been so stressful and chaotic that the nurse must have taken pity on him, letting him in to hold his daughter.
He remember reaching out for her little hand, so small and tiny and fragile.
He remembers the fear that had struck him cold.
He wasn’t ready for this. He wasn’t ready to be a father. He barely knew how to keep himself alive, why Goose and Carole trusted him Bradley was beyond him.
Deep down, he knew that wasn’t true. He’d go to the ends of the earth for the littlest Bradshaw. His buddy.
Even in her sleep, she’d wrapped her fingers around his own, nuzzling closer to his touch. His heart clenched at the movement, feeling an overwhelming sense of love come over him, quickly replacing the fear.
He reached down, gingerly picking her up. He was afraid he’d wake her but all she did was hum as he gently pulled her to his chest. He held her over his heartbeat, slowly rubbing his hand up and down her back.
She was so small.
“Hi baby.” He whispers. “It’s your Daddy. It’s late right now, so we can officially be introduced in the morning, but I just wanted to come say hi.”
She yawns, nuzzling closer to him.
If it’s possible, love blooms even brighter in his chest, a sense of pride swelling in him.
This was his child.
He bows his head, tucking his chin on top of her head, hiding the tears at the fact that Carole and Goose had been right, that all he needed was to see her, and it would all click.
This was his daughter.
Looking down at the little child in his arms, he places a soft kiss to her head before gently putting her back down. He reaches out, tracing his fingertips over the few tufts of hair on her head.
He swears, in that moment, that he would do whatever it took to protect his daughter from harm.
-
He couldn’t protect her.
It’s all he can think of as Penny drives him to the hospital.
He should’ve been there to protect her.
The night is rainy, thundering against the rooftop of the car as he struggles to keep himself upright and breathing, mind racing with the worst possibilities. Out of the corner of his eye, he recognizes the movement of Penny glancing at him before reaching out to squeeze his thigh.
“She’ll be okay.” Penny whispers. “Your daughter is nothing if not a fighter.”
He knows that, rationally, he knows that.
But for as much of a fighter as his daughter is, he knows that the universe is just as much of a cruel temptress, who cares little about matters of life and death, of love and loss, of the people who are still needed on this earth.
Bradley needed her. Javy too. Amelia and yes, even Jake.
Many loved his daughter, even if she didn't always see it. Many needed her in their lives.
He still needed his daughter.
Getting the call, the worst call, had been like a bucket of ice down his spine.
The hospital hadn’t told him anything over the phone, which only stood to heighten his fears. They’d just asked him to come to the hospital as soon as he possibly could, which only made his worry grow.
The rest of the drive is a blur.
He remembers his breath getting caught in his throat as he stepped through the door, brain flashing back to the night Carole had checked into the hospital for the last time.
Penny squeezes his shoulder, bringing him back to the present. She nods at him, the smallest signs of encouragement, moving her hand down his arm to intertwine her fingers with his own.
You can do this.
He walks to the front desk, the nurse in green and pink scrubs with frogs looking up at him. “How may I help you?”
“My- my daughter.” Penny squeezes his hand as he forces himself to take a shaky breath. “I’m Pete Mitchell, I received a call that my daughter was in a car crash and was brought here?”
The nurse behind the one sitting, wearing all blue scrubs, looks up at him from a chart she’s looking over. “You’re Pete Mitchell?”
He nods, afraid of the look the flashes through her eyes at the sight of him, at the way she softens as she steps closer like he’s a wounded animal who might run.
“Your daughter is still in surgery. When she’s out of surgery, she’ll be moved to the ICU and at that time, you may see her. I’m afraid I can’t give you any more information at this time.”
“How- how did this happen?”
Someone clears their throat, prompting them to turn. An older man is standing next them. He’s wearing a police uniform, holding his cap in his hands.
There’s lines under his eyes, sign of years of laughter and love.
What won’t be for the first time that night, he’s struck with the realization that his daughter may never see those days.
“Mr. Mitchell, I’m Officer John Matthews. I was the responding officer at the scene. I rode with your daughter in the ambulance here and I’d be happy to fill you on what happened. I’d like to wait with you, if that’s alright.”
He realizes too late that there’s still blood on this man’s uniform.
His daughter’s blood.
“We’d love to know anything you can tell us.” Penny says from beside him.
His breathing is coming out in shorts bursts now as he zeroes in on the crimson stain against the Navy blue on this man’s uniform. It feels like he’s underwater as this man guides them to a set of chairs to sit.
A thought strikes him, breaking him out of the panic.
“I’ve- I’ve gotta call Brad. Do you think he knows? He needs to be here, he-” He stands up, staggering as he fumbles for his phone, patting his pockets.
“Mav!” A voice calls out from across the waiting room, sprinting towards him from the door.
His head swings up, barely catching sight of his son before his body barrels into him. Instinctively, he wraps his arms around him, trying to soothe his shaking body.
“They called, they wouldn’t tell me anything, oh God, please tell me she’s going to be okay-”
Bradley pulls away, wiping at his eyes furiously.
“Kiddo, I-” He shakes his head. “I don’t know. She’s still in surgery.”
“Why don’t you have a seat? Officer Matthews was just about to explain what happened, he was the responding officer on the scene.” Penny says softly from behind them. Bradley nods, moving to one of the chairs, pulling Maverick with him. “This is Bradley, her fiancé.”
Matthews gives Brad a small smile. “Hi son. Nice to meet you.”
Bradley gives a jerky nod in return.
Matthews sighs, running his hands over his pants. “Your daughter was hit by a driver who was driving while under the influence. Her car was t-boned on the driver side in the middle of the intersection. The driver had the red but sped through the intersection anyways, hitting her at 80 miles per hour. He took off after the accident, but because he was highly intoxicated and injured and on foot, he only made it a few blocks before officers caught up with him. He’s currently in custody and sustained minor injuries. We have traffic cam footage of the accident as well, so he will be facing charges.”
Matthews sounds like he’s rattling off a report he wrote, telling them the pure facts and nothing more.
“I was the responding officer at the scene. Because of the rain and the force of the impact, your daughter’s car slid on the asphalt and-” Matthews cuts himself off, taking a shaky breath before shutting his eyes. He doesn’t need the officer to continue to guess what happened next. “Mr. Mitchell, I am so sorry. We did everything we could at the scene to give her proper medical attention before EMTs got there. I am so sorry.”
Next to him, Bradley whimpers. “She was just supposed to be picking Harvard up. She was just supposed to pick him up and take him back to his house and come home. I offered to go with her, but she told me to stay in bed, that I looked too cozy with Buddy. I should’ve been there. It should’ve been me.”
Shoes squeak on the floor, causing them all to look up.
Javy is standing there, looking paler and shaky than he’s ever been, even after the time he went into g-loc the first time this group had all been together. He seems frozen in place, fear etched into every inch of his face.
Jake’s next to him, barely keeping Javy from tumbling to the floor.
Behind him, he can see Natasha’s shorter figure.
Bob towers over them, with Mickey leveling out the group.
The shoes they heard are attached to that of Reuben, who’s holding a coffee carrier. His wife Celia is next to him, holding two more.
No one seems sure what to say, all just looking at one another.
“If Rebel was here, she’d say we all look like the Spiderman meme.” Mickey breathes out, a ghost of a smile appearing on his face.
It’s Jake who laughs first, breaking the tension. “Garcia, could you read the room please?” He says through choked chuckles, head swinging back to the shorter man.
Mickey shrugs. “She would’ve thought it was funny.”
“I hate that you’re right and I can not wait to see the look on Rebel’s face when you tell her that.” Reuben says. “Now come on you lot, sit. We’re going to be here a while.” Reuben nods his head to chairs as they follow his direction, gathering around him and Bradley. “I brought coffee for everyone. The smallest of comfort right now, you know?”
The group is silent as they sit, taking their coffee from Reuben and Celia. When Reuben gets to Maverick, he wordlessly holds out the drink before sitting down next to him. Penny has since moved, talking with Celia and checking in with the aviators. He shifts the cardboard sleeve on the cup as Reuben sighs, leaning back in the chair.
“I’m really sorry Mav.” He says, shaking his head. “I’m- I’m a Dad and I can’t even imagine what you’re going through right now.”
“That explain the coffee?” He asks, holding the cup up.
Reuben chuckles. “That’s Celia’s idea. She’s holding it together for me, I think. Penny called me and Celia’s first instinct was to figure out how to make it better for everyone else. We fell in love with saints of women.”
He frowns, nodding.
Penny really had been great and things really hadn’t even begun to unfold.
He had no idea what would happen over the next 24 hours.
So yeah, maybe he could kind of understand the appeal of coffee, a small gift of something he didn’t have to worry about while he focused in on the one thing that did matter: his kid.
-
He isn’t sure how much longer he sits there, tearing at the edges of the cardboard sleeve. The waiting room is quiet, a nervous tension buzzing in the air.
His pilots are quiet, maybe for the first time in their lives.
Callie has appeared along with Billy and Neil. Her head is leaned on Billy’s shoulder, legs propped up on Billy’s lap.
Mickey’s leaned back in his chair, Reuben’s arm thrown over his WSO. Celia is on the opposite side of Mickey, rubbing her arm up and down the man’s shoulders.
Natasha is next to Brad, her hand on his knee. Bob’s next to them, arm slung over Nat’s shoulder as she leans into his chest.
Javy won’t let Jake touch him, it seems. Javy’s head is in his hands all while Jake watches his boyfriend closely.
“Pete Mitchell?”
He looks up towards the voice. It’s the nurse from earlier, the one with the pink scrubs with frogs.
“Your daughter is out of surgery. Dr. Hansley was wondering if he could have a word?”
He nods, standing up from his chair with aching limbs as he walks towards the nurse and down a hallway with her, feeling almost like he’s walking towards hearing his daughter’s death sentence.
The doctor meets them outside of the ICU, a younger man with glasses atop his nose. He almost looks like Bob.
“Mr. Mitchell, it’s good to meet you. I’m Dr. Carlos Hansley, I was the chief surgeon who operated on your daughter.”
“Is she going to be okay?” He asks abruptly, unable to bring himself to do the niceties.
The doctor sighs. “Unfortunately, I can’t guarantee that. Your daughter had many mild contusions and lacerations along the left side of her body. In addition, she also had what is called a hemothorax, which is internal bleeding in the lungs. This was due to the impact of the collision and the subsequent rolling of the car. We had to sedate her and put her on a ventilator to allow for a chest tube to be inserted so as to drain the blood. We also suspect that she may have some brain swelling due to the collision, but our main priority was to drain the blood from her lungs.”
He swallows, nodding. “So, what’s best case scenario we’re looking at here?”
“Best case scenario? We are able to ween the sedation and take her off the ventilator at some point over the next few days, where she will be able to breath on her own.” The doctor pauses, biting his lip.
“But?”
“But there is no telling just how much her quality of life will be diminished, just that it will most likely be severe. As of right now, we are unable to tell the long-term consequences of the collision. Your daughter is physically stable right now. But it’s up to her to keep fighting and I want you to be fully aware that it may not be worth it to her.” Dr. Hansley sighs. “This is never easy to tell a parent but you should prepare yourself for the possibility that your daughter may not wake up.”
His ears begin to ring at the words, suddenly feeling underwater once more.
“Can I see her?”
Dr. Hansley nods. “This is your daughter’s nurse, Jessica. Should you need anything while you’re with her, Jessica can help you and will be attending to your daughter. She will explain all the visitation rules while she is in the ICU.”
He nods as the doctor excuses himself, walking down the hallway.
“You mentioned something about a fiancé?”
He nods, looking back down the hallway where he came from. “Yes, Bradley. He’s her fiancé.”
She nods, gesturing back towards the hallway. “We usually limit visitors in the ICU to that of family, and although not legally married, I trust that he will want to be here. However, it seems that there are many people here who might wish to say goodbye to her, so I just ask that you all behave and limit yourselves to three in the room at a time.”
“Do you think she’ll make it?” He hears himself asking before he can even register that the words have left his mouth.
It almost feels like he’s floating.
Jessica sighs. “It’s tough to say, Mr. Mitchell. I think that your daughter is going to be one hell of a fighter. Why don’t you stay with your daughter if it’s alright I inform her fiancé of her state?”
He nods, starting towards the bed he can see his daughter laying on through the glass window on the door before stopping again. “We’re Navy.” He admits sheepishly. “They’re my pilots, they fly with my daughter. They’re family.”
She gives him a soft smile. “Well then I’ll make sure they all know they’re welcome to come by. I’ll send Bradley down here as well.”
“Thank you.” He whispers.
“Of course, Mr. Mitchell.”
“Pete. Please call me Pete.”
She nods. “Of course, Pete. Now go look after your daughter.”
-
It’s the waiting that kills him from the inside out, unable to do anything more for his daughter than just wait.
-
It’s not for another two days before the doctor informs them that they should probably start thinking about taking his daughter off the ventilator and letting her pass peacefully.
Bradley rages.
-
The next morning, everyone prepares to say their goodbyes.
Despite the open offer to go with them, he keeps himself in the waiting room, Penny’s hand in his.
Callie and Billy go first. Callie only makes it a few minutes before she re-appears, sobbing so hard he isn’t sure she’s breathing.
Reuben and Celia go next, Celia bringing a little teddy bear Reuben’s boys, Elijah and Adrian, had picked out for her to bring her comfort in her last moments.
When Celia leaves, Mickey joins Reuben. The two are in there for almost an hour and a half and he wonders what stories Mickey is telling her before he never gets the chance to. He briefly thinks he might be catching her up on the latest Marvel film she hadn't seen yet, although he couldn’t tell you what it was.
Natasha and Bob go together, although Bob leaves before Natasha does, the girl spending another 45 minutes with his daughter. He wonders what kinds of promises she’s making about Bradley.
“Do you know what you’re going to do yet?”
He shakes his head slowly, unable to meet his girlfriend’s eyes. She sigh, shifting gently in the chair next to him as Amelia disappears down the hallway with Jake to go say goodbye.
“I’ll support you no matter what choice you make Pete.” She says, taking his head and settling her chin into his shoulder.
“I want to be selfish.” He says, his voice cracking. “I want to be selfish and tell her to stay. I want her to fight and I want her to make it. I want to be selfish and keep my daughter with me.” He shakes his head, swallowing as he finally turns to look Penny in the eye. “But she could live the rest of her life in pain. We have no idea what life would be life for her physically if she woke up, to say nothing of her mental state. And I would never forgive myself if my daughter spent another ten years on this Earth in pain all because I was selfish.”
“We make sacrifices for the ones we love.” She whispers.
“I just wish it didn’t have to be me.”
“She loved you Pete.” Penny whispers, pressing a kiss to his shoulder blade. “I know that doesn’t make it better or bring your daughter back but she loved you. She knows the sacrifice you’re making for her. You did right by your kid Pete.”
“She deserved more time.”
“I know but you’ve got to be brave enough to let her go. You’re strong enough to let her go and I’m right there with you.”
“I love you, you know that?”
She gives him a watery smile, pushing back some of his hair. He sits there a minute more, allowing himself to feel her love before he stands up.
“Pete, wait.”
He turns as Penny stands up, wrapping him in a hug. “Tell her I loved her too.”
“She loved you Penny.”
“My favorite thing about her. How much love she had to give to everyone.” She squeezes him before stepping back. “I’ll be right here.”
He nods before sighing, turning away to walk towards his daughter’s room. He passes Amelia in the hallway and she stops, giving him a hug. He holds the girl to his chest, noting the way she’s grown up before his very eyes.
“I’m sorry Maverick.” She whispers.
“It’s okay A. She’ll be somewhere better, you know that.” She nods, wiping at her eyes once more before disappearing down the hallway towards her Mom.
He finally reaches her room, pausing outside the cracked door, as he catches the sound of Jake’s voice.
“-you didn’t even like me, you know?” The blonde sniffs and he suspects Jake might be barely suppressing tears. “You didn't even like me and yet you tried so hard for Javy.” Another sniff. “I think maybe that’s what I’ll miss most: your heart. You loved people so deeply, and you tried to see the best in everyone even when they’re just awful to you.”
He pushes the door open a little wider, leaning against the doorframe as he takes in the pilot seated next to her bed. He’s holding one of her hands, head bent over her body.
“You know, I- I would always argue with you just because I thought it was fucking funny. Javy always begged me to stop, told me that one day I was gonna get smacked and he wouldn’t feel sorry for me. But- But I loved that about us, you know? We argued and bickered and got in each other’s faces but you still would’ve picked the phone up at 3 am if I had called.”
Jake sniffs again and as Maverick creeps closer into the room, he can see the fresh tear tracks on Jake’s face.
“Getting to know you has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life. You were a light, Rebel, and the world will surely be darker without you. I’m- I’m sorry it had to end this way and those words feel hollow but I am. I’m sorry for all the things you’ll never get to see. I um- I bought that ring I was showing you.” Jake sniffs agains as Pete’s heart clenches.
His daughter had been helping Jake plan to propose to Javy, he realizes.
“It’s a shame you won’t be here to see it, because he’d want you to be here. He loved you with his whole heart, you know. You two truly were platonic soulmates and I loved y’alls friendship maybe more than you loved it. Because I knew that if something ever happened to me, you’d be there to look after him. So here’s my promise to you: I’ll look after them. I’ll look after Javy, I’ll look after Bradley, and I’ll even be sure to look after Pops. I don’t want you to worry that they’ll be alone because they won’t.”
Jake rubs his hands over his face as he pulls away from her, standing up from his chair.
“There’s some place better.”
Jake jumps, turning to face him.
“Mav, I-”
“She really cared about you.”
The pilot nods, glancing back at her. “She was a good friend. I’m really gonna miss her.”
“There’s some place better.” He whispers, throat closing up as he looks back to his daughter.
He knew what he needed to do.
Jake pats him on the shoulder as he walks past. He stands there for a minute, just watching her before moving closer to her bed, sitting down in the chair Jake had abandoned as he picks up her hand.
He squeezes it, looking over his daughter. He spies the little teddy bear tucked up on the bed, right next to her cheek. It almost makes it seem like she’s just fallen asleep.
There was an ache settling in his chest, one he was never sure he’d fill, the same ache that had settled in his chest when Goose, Carole, Ice, left him.
“If you want to go, I want you to know that it’s going to be okay.” He whispers, looking at her face. He rubs his thumbs over the bruised knuckles, wondering how they ended up here.
She wasn’t supposed to beat him back to them.
She was supposed to live a long, healthy life with Bradley and their dog and everything she had ever wanted.
He decides in that moment that losing his child is more painful than anything he’s ever experienced as his breathing becomes ragged, eyes wet.
“I want- I want to be selfish. I want to be selfish and tell you to stay, to fight, to be here with us. But I know that- that fighting may not be worth what you know will wait for you if you wake up. And I guess- I guess it’s kind of my choice here too, and that maybe I’m taking it away from you. But from the moment you were born, I-”
He chokes on his breath, shuddering as he bows his head. “I promised to keep you safe. I promised I would protect you. And I’ve done a really shit job of it, haven’t I? I’ve failed you, every time, I’ve failed. And I won’t- I won’t fail you this time kiddo. I promise.” His voice cracks on the last word, body overcome with sobs.
He isn’t sure how long he sits there, crying over her body, but the sky outside has darkened by the time he finally pulls himself together, the answer becoming clearer as he looks at her.
Finally, he stands up, ready to face his decision.
He sighs, closing the door behind him as he faces Javy and Bradley. They’re the only two left, minus Jake who’s lingering. He’d sent the rest of them home hours ago, wanting them to get some rest. They both watch him carefully as he pulls up a chair in front of them.
He swallows, the tears refusing to leave even as he tried to steady himself. “I have made the decision to pull her off the ventilator.”
The words are quiet but Bradley’s next are not.
“Mav, you can’t.” His eyes are wide and he can’t bring himself to meet them for too long, knowing he’s got the same betrayed look in his eye the day he found out he had pulled his papers. “Why are you just- why are you just giving up on her? She still has so much fight in her.”
“Bradley, listen to me.” He says, doing his best to keep his voice measured. “We have no idea what it would be like for her if she survived. She would probably never fly again, she could spend the rest of her life in pain. I’m not taking that risk, not when she can go peacefully.”
“No, she- she wouldn’t want you doing this.”
“Bradley, you have to let her go.” He whispers. The pilot stands up abruptly, chair clattering to the floor from the force of the movement.
“No!” He nearly shouts. “No, and I can’t believe I’m the only one fighting for her. I can’t believe you’re giving up on her like this! She’d be so disappointed in you, Mav.” Maverick winces, looking away from his son.
“Brad, I’m sorry but this is what’s for the best for her.”
“No, you’re wrong. I- I can’t be here.”
Bradley turns, stalking down the hallway as he lets out a sigh, rubbing a hand over his face.
“You’re doing the right thing.” Javy says quietly, even as he looks torn apart from the inside out.
“You’re welcome to stay when they take the ventilator out until she passes.”
Javy sniffs, shaking his head. “I can’t. I’m afraid- I’m afraid that if I stay, that’s going to be the only way I remember her. And I- I want to remember her the way I’ve always known my best friend. I want to remember her as the girl with the witty comments and who loved so fiercely. I want to remember her as full of life and not- not laying in a hospital bed.”
He nods, reaching over to grasp Javy in a hug. The man returns it, tucking his head into his shoulder. “You were her best friend. No one can take that from you and it'll always be that way.”
Javy nods, gripping him tighter.
“I’m gonna go- I’m gonna go say goodbye to her.”
He nods as Javy clings to him for a minute more before letting him go, moving to walk into the room.
“Mav?” He turns, catching sight of Javy hesitating at her door. “Would- would you go with me? I’m- I’m scared.”
He follows Javy into the room, shutting the door behind them. He stands, back resting against the wall, as Javy takes her hand. It’s all he does for a while, just looking at her.
“I- I don’t even know where to start.” Javy whispers. “You were—are—my best friend. I don’t want to say goodbye because goodbye means that I have to move on with life without you in it and God, there’s never been a moment we’ve been friends where I thought of that as a possibility. I’m always- I’m always gonna remember you as the girl with the witty comebacks and insane flying skills and some of the best hugs.” Javy takes a shaky breath. “God, I always took for granted the time we had. I thought we’d have forever to get up to stupid shit and annoy our partners and I-”
It’s then that Javy breaks down and he’s known his pilot long enough to know when he needs space. It’s hard on him too, watching all these people who had loved her have to say goodbye to her.
It kills him to think that there might've been a point in her life where she had thought she wasn’t loved so strongly, so immensely.
He walks blindly down the hallways to the nurses station where Jessica sits, typing something on the computer. She catches sight of him, offering him a soft smile. “Yes, Pete? What can I do for you?”
He sighs, leaning against the counter. “I’ve decided I want to take her off the ventilator.”
She sighs and nods. “I think you’re making the right choice here, Pete.” She says, standing up from the desk.
“I hope so.”
They walk down the hallway as she softly explains the procedure to him, how they’ll sedate her so she’ll feel no pain as she goes. She explains that they can be there the whole time so that she doesn’t have to be alone when she goes.
As the reach the room, Javy’s still in there, Jake hugging his boyfriend as he cries. Javy pulls back when he spots them, Jake understanding in a moment what’s about to happen.
Javy leaves the room, Jake offering him a final hug as he exits. He takes a deep breath, sitting down in a chair, as Jessica begins the process of taking her off the ventilator. He forces himself to watch, to hold his daughter’s hand as he tries to soothe her.
Finally, as Jessica leaves, she rests a hand on his shoulder and whispers, “Let me know if you need anything.” He nods numbly, unable to look away from his daughter. She leaves, the sound of the door shutting behind her sounding through the room.
He glances at the monitor, realizing her numbers aren’t going down like they should be.
“Why is she fighting?” He whispers, rubbing his thumb over her knuckles. “It’s okay sweetheart. I’m here, please don’t fight it, please just let go. It’s okay, I’m telling you it’s okay to go.”
He nervously watches the numbers on the machine next to her, wondering if she’s in pain, desperately hoping she’s not panicking and thinking they abandoned her.
“It’s okay, honey. Let go. I’m right here honey, it’s okay.”
The door opens, revealing Bradley, who looks beyond distraught. His hair is tugged in wildly different directions, eyes red as his face is covered in tear tracks. He shuts the door quietly behind him, walking to sit down next to her.
“How’s she doing?” He whispers, taking her other hand.
“Fighting it.”
Bradley grimaces, leaning forward to run his fingers over her forehead and down her cheek. “It’s okay baby. Your Dad and I, we’re right here. Let go. It’s okay to go, please don’t fight it.”
He watches as his daughter’s numbers settle to how Jessica told him they should, almost like she’s breathing a sigh of relief as Bradley tells her it’s okay.
“I love you, baby. It’s okay to go. Go to Mom and Dad, they’ll take care of you. I’ll be okay, I promise. I know you’ll wait for me. Just let go, let them take care of you.”
His throat closes as he watches Bradley say goodbye, intertwining his fingers with her own.
He forces himself to not watch the numbers on the machine that signal her getting closer to passing but instead focuses in on her face, the last few moments he has with his daughter.
“I love you sweetheart. It’s okay, you don’t have to be scared. Ice is waiting for you.” He whispers, squeezing your hand. “He’ll take good care of you, sweetheart.”
In what is probably a matter of seconds, but feel more like a lifetime, she slips away.
The machine gives a steady beep, signaling the end of her life.
Bradley squeezes her hand ever so tighter, his head falling to rest on her arm as a sob overtakes his body. His shoulders are shaking with the weight of everything.
Maverick can’t make himself move. He should go over there, comfort his son, tell him it will be okay, but he can’t bring himself to look away from the sight of his daughter.
She looked so peaceful.
-
Go to Mom and Dad, they’ll take care of you. I’ll be okay, I promise...
You feel warm, the sound of Bradley’s voice appearing. It’s comforting, hearing him tell you that it’s okay. You want to give him a hug, to run your fingers through his hair, and give him one last kiss. To tell him that you’re sorry it had to end this way, that the two of you hadn’t had more time.
You want to curl up in your Dad’s arms, like all those times you’d done when you were scared when you were little. To tell him you were sorry you had become one more person he had lost.
You hoped they stayed close to each other for the time they had left, that they wouldn’t make it their mission to come join you too soon.
It’s okay, you don’t have to be scared. Ice is waiting for you...
Something lights up inside of you at the thought of your godfather again. As their voices become fuzzy and distant, the warmth envelopes you, almost like a hug as you’re drifting off to sleep.
The next thing you feel is someone strong wrapping their arms around you, a hug from someone who smells like honey and ocean water. Like Carole had.
The warm white clears, revealing a man who looks to be like your fiancé did, if only 40 years before. A man you recognize from pictures and hazy memories. He offers you a kind smile, if albeit a bit sad.
Th person hugging you strokes your hair, whispering words that don’t register as your throat closes up, catching sight of another figure.
“Ice?”
He turns, giving you a watery smile.
“Hi kiddo.”
The person hugging you pulls back every so slightly, giving you a chance to catch the unmistakable blonde hair of Carole Bradshaw. She gives you a warm smile, still not letting go of you.
“You’re safe now. We’ve got you.”

15. "It’s never too early for Halloween music!"
“From my laboratory in the castle east.”
Pete’s eye twitches; it's the seventh time this song has played since he walked in the door.
It’s been an hour.
He watches his wife hum along to the world’s only Halloween song as she pours drinks and jokes around with the regulars lining the south side of the bar. He loves his wife; he’s so grateful for her love and the way she understands him. But they’re in the middle of their yearly Halloween standoff, and he has no love to spare for her at the moment.
“To the master bedroom where the vampires feast!”
Penny loves Halloween. It’s always been her favorite holiday; Pete learned that almost forty years ago when he first ran into Admiral Benjamin’s pretty daughter at the Officer’s Club Halloween celebration. She was dressed like a vampire, and he was instantly smitten, plastic pointy teeth and all. Goose made fun of him for weeks over crushing on the girl who looked like she had been in a fight, fake blood splattered all over her clothes and skin.
They had been on and off for decades, before she got married and after the divorce was finalized, but whether or not they were together, he always thought of her on Halloween. There had even been a few drunken, desperate calls on the 31st, just wanting to hear the voice of the woman he loved.
It had been something they talked about before getting back together this time, the final time, the time they got married. It had been an excruciating conversation. Pete isn’t great at expressing his feelings but tries for Penny. Admitting that he had loved her for years, but he wasn’t in a headspace where he could be there for her. It’s why he hadn’t done anything when it was announced that she was engaged to Todd.
But after the uranium mission, he started to heal. Making up with Bradley had been a big part of that. He still misses his best friends; it can be overwhelming how painful their deaths are, but it’s not as debilitating as it used to be. The healing and talking about his feelings let Penny know he was ready to be with her.
And so she was the one to propose. An early morning roll in the sheets suddenly paused as her big, hazel eyes blinked down at him, a soft look on her face that he’d never seen before. She asked, and he said yes, letting her know that if she had waited until that night, he would have asked the same question. I would have given the same answer; she has whispered against his lips as he flipped them over.
Pete had never regretted saying yes.
”The ghouls all came from their humble abodes.”
Except when it came to Halloween. Because as much as Penny loves him, she also loves to torture him. And her favorite way of doing that is by playing Monster Mash over and over again until he gives in. Every year, Pete bets her that he can make it until October 2nd without complaining about the song.
It’s been four straight years of losing.
The longest he’s made it is until three in the afternoon, but that’s only because Penny was visiting her aunt that day.
Mav has done the calculations; if he can make it through the next hour at the Hard Deck, he’ll win the bet. He can do it. This is his year. He can feel it. That new surround sound 4k television is as good as his.
“To get a jolt from my electrodes!”
Pete jumps as the entire bar starts singing along. He has no idea how, but she’s coordinated some thirty-odd strangers into joining her campaign to break him.
Unfortunately for him, it works.
“Okay! Okay! I give! Turn it off!”
“No! It’s never too early for Halloween music!”
“Penny, please-”
“They did the Monster Mash!”
The night keeps getting worse for him as his daughters - well, step-daughter and daughter-in-law - stroll into the bar, kissing him on the cheek before joining his wife next to the jukebox, all three of them dropping quarters in to keep playing the song.
A big hand slaps his shoulder. “You know, if we tried hard enough, I think we could throw that thing into the ocean. Your wife would never have to know.”
“Good thought. Penny already threatened me if I even look at it wrong.” Bradley snorts, making no effort to hide the laughter. “Yeah, go ahead - yuck it up, kid. How’s the campaign going to get your wife to take some time off before the babies come?”
“It’s not…” His nephew frowns, eyebrows furrowing as he watches Mary take a break from dancing to a song that’s thankfully not Halloween-themed, both hands supporting her lower back as she takes deep breaths. “I wish she would just sit down and relax.”
“Is she in pain?”
“No, not pain, but she’s uncomfortable most of the time, and she gets tired so easily. Her bump is making is harder to do things, but she still won’t let me help her.”
Pete hums; he’s never supported a woman through pregnancy, but he can’t imagine it’s easy for either party. “It’s gotta be difficult to lose your freedom like that. To just wake up one day and not be able to put your shoes on by yourself.”
“I know, but I just want what’s best for her and the girls.”
“Girls?” Pete echoes, his chest warming.
Bradley stiffens, eyes wide and panicky as he turns to his uncle. “You didn’t hear me say that.”
“Okay.”
“You did not hear me say that.”
“Bradley. I understood the first time. I didn’t hear it.” Both men pause, smiles taking over their faces. Pete leans in, unable to hold back his excitement. “Two girls?! Bradley, that’s amazing!”
“I’m so scared.” The big, brawny man giggles, his cheeks flushed with happiness. “Do you wanna hear their names?”
“I thought you weren’t telling anyone.”
“We aren’t.” Both men jump, Mary somehow sneaking up on them. “But we thought the grandparents would like to know before they’re born.”
“Grandparents?” Pete asks, getting choked up at the title.
“Of course, Mav. Hope the two of you are ready to be grandma and grandpa.” Bradley smiles at Penny, who has joined them.
“Oh! You two!” Penny envelopes the parents-to-be in a hug, happy tears filling her eyes.
Pete is frozen on his stool, overwhelmed and overjoyed. Just a few years ago, he thought he’d never even get to talk to Bradley again, and now he’s going to be grandpa to the next generation of Bradshaws. His chest clenches, thinking about his best friends and how they're missing another big event in their son’s life. He vows to be the best grandparent, to tell the kids all about their biological grandparents. To keep Nick and Carole’s memory alive.
“So… do you wanna know their names?” Mary asks, her cheeks pink just like her husband, smile growing as both newly minted grandparents nod. “Even before we found out what we were having, we decided that we were going to use names of people important to us. Baby A is Alice Theresa Penelope Bradshaw, named after my grandmother and you, Penny.”
“Me?” Pete holds his wife close as she blubbers, wiping her tears away.
“You’ve been like a mother to both of us, Penny. It’s the least we could do.” Mary hugs her pseudo-mother-in-law. “Do you wanna tell them Baby B’s name, honey?”
“Lily Nicola Carole Bradshaw.” Bradley rasps, blinking back tears. “For mom and dad.”
Pete pulls his son off his stool and into a tight squeeze, holding him close and whispering how proud he is of him, both laughing through tears. When he pulls back, he hugs Mary as close as he can around her six-month twin bump.
“Thank you.”
“For what, Pete?”
“Loving him.”
“It’s the easiest thing I’ve ever had to do, Mav.” Her face is serene as she pulls away. “I know things were rough for a long time between you, but I hope you know how much he loves you.”
“I do, thanks, kid.” He smiles as Bradley whisks his wife towards the jukebox, muttering something about playing their wedding song.
“Well, grandma and grandpa. Did you ever think we’d get here?”
“A few years ago, I would have said there was no way anyone would call me grandpa. But, after he met Mary, I knew it would only be a matter of time.” Pete wraps an arm around his wife, pouring love into the kiss he presses to her lips. “Hey, you’re gonna be a pretty foxy grandma.”
“Foxy?”
“Oh, yeah. Foxy. We’ll have to get you one of those necklaces.”
She blinks at his big grin, digesting the suggestion. “I’m gonna assume this is a weird reaction to the happy news.”
“Probably for the b-”
“I was working in the lab late one night!”
“Amelia!”
Pete can’t even bring himself to be mad as his entire family laughs, too excited about the future to care about the stupid song they’ve been using to torment him. He hugs his wife close as they watch Bradley and Mary tell Amelia the news, heart melting when the teenager hugs her sister-in-law before jumping into her brother’s arms.
I can’t believe this is my life… maybe Mickey can help me break the jukebox; he’s good with computers, and Penny would never suspect him.

Letting Go Ch. 8 Cemetery Conversations
This chapter got way longer than I expected; apparently the muse had a lot to say so I hope yall enjoy it!
Read on A03;
Tumblr: Letting Go Masterlist
Mav is just sitting there feeling the same gentle breeze Bradley felt when he feels another presence beside him. Bradley quietly sinks down beside him and Mav reaches over squeezing his arm. “You ok kiddo?”
Bradley stares out straight ahead. He hasn’t been to this particular spot since the day of the funeral, and it still doesn’t feel real that he’s lost an uncle. Mav almost thinks he’s not going to answer, but then Bradley shakes his head no and sniffs. In the next instant he’s leaning into Mav’s side as silent tears fall.
Mav wraps his arms around Bradley tight. “It’s ok kiddo. Just let it out,” he murmurs, burying his head in Bradley’s hair. He holds him tight while Bradley silently cries. “Why isn’t he still here?” he whispers, breaking Mav’s heart in two.
He tightens his arms around Bradley before he quietly answers. “I've asked myself that a thousand times it seems.” He pauses to find the right words. “I never thought I’d outlive him. He should definitely still be here.” The “I wish it’d been me instead,” goes unsaid, but he knows Bradley heard it anyway if the way he tenses in his arms is any indication.
“I should’ve came home sooner. I had a feeling he was keeping tabs, he admitted as much when I saw him before this.” He turns his face into Mav’s chest, just breathing for a moment. “I knew he wasn’t good, but I didn’t think it’d be the last time I saw him forever.” His body shudders as he tries to hold back more sobs.
Mav just holds him tighter. “I know,” he sighs softly. “I know the feeling. It’s not fair. Not at all. But Ba…” he stops himself before he calls him “Baby Goose.” For one the kid’s not a baby anymore, but two he doesn’t think he’s earned that right again just yet. “But Bradley, you got to see him, got to catch up. Got to know how proud of you he is. He loved you kiddo and you know it. And it sucks, majorly, but you know he’s never far.” He places another kiss to the top of Bradley's head.
The kid surprises him once more when he pulls his face out of Mav’s chest. “You can call me Baby Goose again,” he murmurs, knowing that was what Mav stopped himself from saying. “It was always my favorite nickname.” He shrugs like it’s no big deal, even though Mav feels floored.
Bradley turns so his head lays in Mav’s lap like they do on the couch sometimes still when neither can go back to sleep. “I know you brought me here, hoping it would make me talk.” Mav snorts because he knows his kid is smart, he just didn’t think Bradley would call him on it after this week.
“I’d do anything if I thought it would help you.”
“I know you would.” He lets out a sigh and wipes his eyes under his aviators. “Ice give any resounding advice?”
Mav laughs out loud at that; damn if he hasn’t missed his kid. Bradley rolls and looks up at him with a smirk and a shrug. “Just the same thing he’s tried to teach me since ‘86 Baby Goose. Patience.”
Bradley snorts. “You think you finally got it?”
“Getting there,” Mav says, staring off into the distance.
“I’m glad it wasn’t you instead, Dad,” he murmurs so quietly it almost gets lost in the air. “I… I don’t know what I would’ve done.” He closes his eyes and just breathes, reminding himself that Mav is still there, still solid against him. “Watching you float over me, flares going in every direction. Knowing what you were doing.” Bradley shudders and Mav’s hand finds his hair. They feel another gentle breeze and Bradley looks towards the sky, more tears escaping. He knows it’s that gentle encouragement to keep going.
“I could see you out of the corner of my eyes. Watched you get hit, go down. Payback said he didn’t see a parachute. They ordered us back.” He hiccups his breath trying to get this out in one go. Mav’s hand is a constant in his hair and it helps. “I wouldn’t acknowledge the order to return so Phoenix tried. Told me the bandits were coming and we couldn’t go back. And then Bob… Bob delivered the final blow trying to tell me you were gone.” He full body shudders at that, knowing he’ll never forget hearing it.
He rolls so his face is against Maverick’s stomach and just breathes as Mav rubs his back. He’s heard all the debriefs, knew what had happened when he went down, and knew Bradley wasn’t likely to forget those moments any time soon. “I just… I couldn’t, wouldn’t , believe it. You promised me a conversation and there’s one thing you’ve never done. You never break a promise. I knew you’d be mad at me, but I wasn’t leaving you. I couldn’t. I didn’t care what happened to me. I had to find you. Whatever that entailed.”
Mav carefully wipes the tears from Bradley’s face as he rolls back to his back. “The minute I saw the ‘copter blow, I knew. I could feel it. I knew it was you and there was nothing I could do as I watched you get it by that SAM. That was the worst feeling in the world.” Mav is quiet so Bradley looks up.
“Yea… I know,” he whispers, wrapping his arms around his dad giving him a hug. “I know.” He knows Mav wasn’t actually seeing him float to the ground, that he probably only saw his dad and the memories. He knows that’s likely to haunt Mav for a long time, but he doesn’t regret it. Not when he has his dad with him now.
They’re both quiet for the longest before Bradley feels some of the tension leaving Mav. Once Mav is relaxed once more, Bradley slowly sits up again so they’re side by side. He pushes his shoulder against Mav’s letting it ground him as they both stare straight ahead. “I owe you both so many apologies,” he starts. Mav tries to stop him but Bradely just shakes his head. “No you’re just going to listen right now and I know Uncle Ice would agree.”
Mav snorts but nods as Bradley leans into him a little more. “Ok. You have my full attention.”
Bradley stares straight ahead, but he knows he has to say this, knows this has been eating him up just as much as the nightmares. “I didn’t apologize when I saw Uncle Ice before the mission, and I should’ve. I never should’ve stayed away or stayed as angry as I did for so long. I should’ve came home the first time he got diagnosed. I should’ve been there, and that’s on me.”
He takes a deep breath and swallows back some tears. He feels another gentle breeze and he knows Mav feels it too when he feels his hand land on his back. “He never blamed you Bradley. Never. He understood more than anyone.”
“I know. But still. I should’ve been there and those are years I’ll never get back.” He takes another deep breath. “But I owe you the most apologies. Not just for the fight over the academy and the years of silence afterwards. I couldn’t… I couldn’t bring myself to block either number. Always afraid I’d miss something life changing if I did, but I still ignored every text, every call.  But nothing compares to what I did here recently. I didn’t mean the things I said at Top Gun. I didn’t mean the things I said that night. I was angry, I was scared. I lashed out at you because it was easy, and I wanted to take those words back as soon as I said them.”
His head drops to his knees as silent tears leak out. Mav’s hand is rubbing up and down his back offering comfort he doesn’t think he deserves. Not until he gets all this out and gets his dad’s forgiveness. “All three of them would be ashamed of me. I know I am. I’m so sorry dad. So sorry. I wish I’d never said it, wish I could take it back. Wish there was a way to erase it from your mind because you never deserved to hear it. You’ve always only looked out for me, cared for me, loved me. And even if I didn’t act like it, somewhere deep down I knew everything you did was out of love and protection. And I still acted like an ungrateful brat. I threw words at your face I knew would hurt because I wanted you to hurt like I did, and that's just… ”
“Hey, B it’s ok just breathe,” Mav said quietly trying to stop a panic attack before it happened. He kept his breath slow and measured as he rubbed Bradley’s back. “Just breathe.” Bradley took several deep breaths, his nails digging into his arms giving him something else to focus on besides his spiraling thoughts.
Mav reached up and pulled his nails out of his arms, wincing as he saw the indentations he knew would bruise later. “It’s ok B. No, you had your say now it’s my turn,” he says when he sees the kid trying to stop him. Bradley just bites his lip but nods. A gentle breeze floats over them once more and Mav smiles. “I know you regret it. I could see it all over your face that night, and I know if Warlock hadn’t interrupted us, you would’ve taken it back right then. Kid, I've been living with your anger for years… Uh uh still talking,” he said, holding his hand up to stop Bradley once more. He wished he could do the eyebrow trick like Ice used to, but he’d never perfected it.
“I’m used to it B, hell half the time I knew I deserved it. Pulling your academy papers was one of the hardest things I’ve done. Ice tried so many different ways to talk me out of it and get me to just talk to you. He’s actually probably really happy we’re sitting here talking now so he can hear it.”
Bradley snorts at that but has to nod his agreement.
“As much as I hate to say it, you got my temper. I knew what to expect, and I knew what to expect when I got the teaching assignment. I wanted to be mad at him, but deep down I knew he knew what he was doing. God he’s probably turning flips hearing me say how he was right.” Bradley snorts a laugh at that. “I knew this wasn’t going to be easy or comfortable for either of us. I knew to expect the anger, but I also knew you had too much of your uncle in you to break the rules or anything of the sort. That day was hard on everyone before anything happened with your uncle. I was prepared when I saw you in there alone. Doesn't mean it didn’t suck or hurt any less…”
Bradley actually whimpers a little at that, and Mav just tightens his hand on his shoulder.
“But I knew you didn’t mean it. Just like you never really meant the words you hurled in that fight about the academy. Getting this second chance means more than enough kid.”
Bradley’s head finds it’s way to Mav’s shoulder. “How can you just brush it off so easily?”
“Maybe your uncle taught me more than I knew.” Bradley outright laughs at that. “You’ll understand one day if you have kids. Being a parent is tough, but you love unconditionally, know matter what. And kiddo, I love you more than anything. So I can take anything you throw at me, if it makes you feel better. I’m always going to love you and nothing you do or say will ever change that.”
“Yea… Love you too dad.” They sit there for a while longer until Bradley’s stomach growls, reminding them both that he hasn’t been eating as much.
“What do you say we go get some food and get back to the hanger? Maybe working on the plane will tire you out today and maybe this helped. We can always come back.”
“Yea sounds like a plan,” Bradley smiles. He gets up and then helps Mav up. He does the same as he did to his parents, kisses his fingers and then touches the stone before heading for the Bronco. Mav hangs back for just a second and Bradley lets him have his own goodbye.
“Thanks Ice,” Mav whispers. “I hope I’m enough to get him through this. We’ll see you again soon.” He touches the headstone himself before he heads to his kid waiting in the Bronco. Another breeze, a little stronger than the previous ones, floats across him making him smile. “Where to?” he asks Bradley, starting the Bronco and heading into town.

This work, all of my other works, and my entire blog are 18+ Only.
Summary: Rooster is married. Maverick found out when the paperwork got filed with the Navy, but he doesn’t have a chance to ask Rooster about it until after the mission
Master List
Sequel: A Day with Duckie
Tumblr media
Maverick remembered the text that he received from Ice about four years prior to the mission.
The kid’s married.
Three little words that felt like bullets straight to Maverick’s heart. Bradley was married. Married. Maverick shouldn’t have been surprised, really. Bradley was more than old enough for marriage. Especially for a naval officer. But it still hurt, it still stung that he wasn’t there to see it.
Ice gave him Rooster’s wife’s name but he couldn’t find many photos of the two of them together. Rooster’s wife’s profiles were all set to private, but Maverick did find some photos posted by one of the bridesmaids. He printed them out and hung them up in his hangar, next to his old photos of Rooster. Even if he cried like a baby while he did it.
It wasn’t until after the mission, when they were sitting alone in their hospital room together, that Maverick had a chance to ask Rooster about his wife.
“You got married?” Maverick asked Rooster quietly.
Maverick gestured to his own left ring finger, which made Rooster fiddle with his gold band. Staring down at his wedding ring for a moment, Rooster tried to figure out how to respond properly to Maverick’s question. Nodding slowly, Rooster turned back to Maverick.
“Yeah, I did,” Rooster answered quietly.
“Congratulations,” Maverick replied softly.
“Thank you,” Rooster returned, fiddling with his ring again.
“How did you meet?”
“She was in the Navy. She worked in intelligence, though. We met through mutual friends and I asked her out. We went on a date to a karaoke bar and never looked back,” Rooster explained, smiling at the memories. “I asked her to marry me about two years after that.”
“And you’re happy?”
“Extremely,” Rooster replied without missing a beat. “Her and Kai, they’re my whole life.”
“Kai?” Maverick asked curiously.
Rooster, seemingly realizing his slip, shrunk a bit into himself. He looked nervous. Incredibly nervous. Fiddling with his wedding band again, Rooster slowly turned back to Maverick.
“Kai is my son.”
“You’re a dad?” Maverick asked, unable to stop the emotion from dripping into his tone.
Not only had Maverick missed Rooster’s wedding, but he also missed the birth of Rooster’s child, and all of the little milestones along the way. And that ache in his chest quietly intensified, though Maverick tried to not let it show.
“Yeah, I am.”
Rooster reached for his phone, pulled up a photo, and passed his phone over to Maverick. He grabbed Rooster’s phone and stared down at the photo. And Maverick would have been lying if he said that he didn’t get a little choked up at the sight of it.
Rooster and a woman that Maverick knew was Rooster’s wife were standing together with a little baby boy sandwiched between them. A little boy that had his father’s smile—albeit one with a few missing teeth—and a matching Hawaiian shirt. Rooster’s wife smiled widely at the camera with her cheek smushed against the top of her son’s head.
And Rooster looked happier in that photo than Maverick had seen him since before Carole passed, even though Rooster wasn’t looking in the direction of the camera. No, Rooster was far too busy smiling at his little family.
“Are they coming to see you?” Maverick asked, handing the phone back to Rooster.
“Yeah, uh, their flight lands tomorrow morning. Phoenix said that she would pick them up from the airport and bring them here,” Rooster explained, placing his phone aside. Rooster paused before turning back to Maverick. “And . . . can you . . . can you not mention the part about me defying a direct order and everything that happened afterwards?”
“I won’t,” Maverick promised, earning a thankful nod from Rooster. “But, at some point, Brad, I think that you should be honest with her about it. As much as you can, given the sensitive information, anyways. Not that I’m in any position to give anyone marriage advice but . . . you should be honest with your wife.”
“I will,” Rooster returned quietly. “It’s just that she gets really stressed when I’m in the hospital. I don’t want to overwhelm her.”
“Are you scared about her reaction?”
“A little bit,” Rooster admitted honestly.
Maverick chuckled, reminiscing about how Goose always looked when he was worried about telling Carole about whatever shenanigans they got into back in the day.
“I’m sure that you’ll be fine.”
~~~~~
Maverick and Rooster were discharged from the hospital the next day.
Phoenix, along with Rooster’s wife and Kai, were supposed to pick them up. Rooster spotted Phoenix’s car and walked after it. The passenger door flew open and Rooster’s wife. She walked around the car to see that Phoenix was helping Kai out of the back seat.
Kai slid out of Phoenix’s car and immediately perked up when he spotted his dad quickly making his way over. But knowing her son, Rooster’s wife snatched him by the back of his shirt before he could run out into the parking lot.
“You have to hold Mommy’s hand when you’re in the parking lot,” she reminded her son.
She looked up and down the road before leading Kai across it. But once Kai safely stepped up onto the sidewalk, she released his hand and let Kai run to Rooster.
“Daddy!” Kai yelled happily, running into Rooster’s waiting arms.
Bradley bent down and scooped Kai up. Holding Kai to his chest, Rooster pressed a kiss to Kai’s hair as he rocked his son back and forth in his arms. Almost like Rooster was trying to soothe himself with his son’s presence.
“I missed you so much, Kai.”
Rooster pressed another kiss to Kai’s head before turning to his wife. She looked like she was trying to hold it together and just barely managing it. But when she caught Rooster’s gaze, she let some more emotion show. Wordlessly, Rooster held out an arm to her and she immediately ran into his embrace, officially reuniting the family of three.
“I’m alright,” Rooster assured her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “I’m okay.”
As Rooster reassured his wife and son that he was fine, Maverick walked around them to stand beside Phoenix. After his wife and Kai were soothed, Rooster turned to introduce them to Maverick.
“Guys, this is Maverick. Mav, this is my wife,” Rooster stated, wrapping his arm around his wife’s waist.
“The man who pulled your papers?” Rooster’s wife asked sharply. Maverick winced at her tone.
“We got past that,” Rooster assured his wife, which caused her to immediately relax.
“Well, it’s nice to finally meet you then,” she replied with a much warmer tone. Rooster’s wife walked over to give Maverick a proper hug that Maverick was happy to return. “And to put a face to the name after all the stories.”
“It’s nice to meet you as well,” Maverick replied, releasing Rooster’s wife.
“And this is my son, Kai,” Rooster added, bouncing his son lightly on his arm. Smiling at his son with complete and utter adoration, Rooster nudged him in the side. “Kai, this is Maverick.”
“Hi,” Maverick greeted Kai softly.
“Hi,” Kai returned shyly, resting his head on Rooster’s shoulder.
“Mav’s a pilot like me,” Rooster explained to his son, causing Kai to pick his head up again. “And he used to fly around with your Grandpa Goose.”
“Really?” Kai asked his dad, earning a nod from Rooster.
Kai stared over at Maverick with newfound curiosity and Maverick tried to not choke up at the clear similarities between Kai and Rooster. Kai wasn’t so much his dad’s twin, but he had that same expression and look in his eye that Maverick saw all the time on a younger Bradley. Offering a small encouraging smile to Kai, Maverick decided to approach.
“Yeah, your Grandpa Goose used to sit in my back seat,” Maverick replied, nodding along. “And he was the best at what he did.” Trying to not burst out into tears at the fact that he was talking about Goose while Baby Goose was holding Grandbaby Goose, Maverick managed a small smile. “Your grandpa’s callsign was Goose. Your dad’s is Rooster. What bird do you want as your callsign, Kai?”
“Mommy calls me ‘Duckie’,” Kai informed Maverick, ending his sentence with a giggle.
“Yes, because he’s impossible to pull out of the water once he’s in,” Rooster explained, shaking his head playfully at his son. “And he pretends that he can’t hear us.”
“No,” Kai giggled, clearly lying.
“He’s also a great liar,” Rooster quipped, tickling Kai’s stomach.
Kai squealed and pushed his dad’s hand away, but he couldn’t stop giggling. And Maverick tried to not burst out into tears again. Baby Goose had a baby. The little baby that he used to babysit and take for extra ice cream had a little baby of his own now.
God, Maverick was getting old.
~~~~~
After spending the day with the rest of the Dagger Squad, Maverick and the Bradshaw family of three retired to Maverick’s quaint residence in town. Rooster grew up in the house after Carole’s death and his old bedroom was perfectly preserved from that time.
It was only about a half an hour before Kai’s bedtime when Rooster approached Maverick in the kitchen.
“Can you watch Kai for a second?”
“Yeah, of course,” Maverick agreed, nodding along immediately. “But why? Where are you going?”
“I just thought that I should tell her,” Rooster explained, keeping his voice low. “There were too many close calls as it was with the rest of the Dagger Squad, so I need to tell her. About the mission and . . . my little stunt.”
“The couch is very comfortable,” Maverick joked, earning a tired sigh from Rooster. “You’ll be fine.”
“I hope so,” Rooster replied, straightening up.
Rooster thanked Maverick before the two rejoined Kai and Rooster’s wife out in the living room. Rooster managed to find an old Connect 4 game in the cabinet and his wife tried to teach Kai how to play. They were sitting around the coffee table with Kai studying the layout closely.
“Can I play with you, Kai?” Maverick asked, moving to sit down beside Kai.
“Yeah,” he mumbled, not taking his eye off of the board.
Maverick saw Rooster lean down to whisper something in his wife’s ear before she nodded. Turning to Kai, Rooster’s wife leaned over and tapped him on the shoulder, causing Kai to look up.
“Behave for Maverick, okay?”
“Okay, Mommy.”
Rooster and his wife got up and headed out of the room to talk. Kai turned to Maverick once his parents were out of sight.
“Why did they leave?”
“They just needed to talk about some things. Adult things. Nothing fun,” Maverick stated, causing Kai to nod with a slight pout. Maverick moved to take the seat that Rooster’s wife was sitting in and picked up a yellow piece. “Did you take a plane to get over here, Kai?”
“Yeah,” Kai stated, smiling up at Maverick.
“Do you like flying?”
“Yeah.”
“Has your dad ever taken you flying before?” Kai shook his head dramatically, causing Maverick to nod along. “You just fly with your mom then?”
“Yeah. Daddy gets scared,” Kai informed Maverick, leaning on the coffee table.
“Well, it’s a little scary when you’re a pilot and someone else is flying the plane,” Maverick replied, very well acquainted with the control freak tendencies that popped up when a naval aviator flew commercial. “And your daddy just wants to make sure that you and everyone else is safe.”
“Mommy tells him to relax,” Kai replied, emphasizing the word with a wave of his hand.
Kai must have seen his mom do that exact routine at least a thousand times because he seemed to know the part by heart. He had the expression, the wave of his hand, and the tone down perfectly. Maverick couldn’t help but laugh.
“Does he listen to her?” Maverick quipped, failing at hiding his amusement.
“Sometimes,” Kai answered with a giggle.
“Like you?”
“Yeah.”
Maverick was about to ask Kai another question when Rooster’s wife’s voice echoed around the house. The door to Rooster’s old bedroom did little to muffle the shock and sheer incredulousness of Rooster’s wife’s question.
“You did what!?”
“Have you ever seen the moon, Kai?” Maverick asked the toddler, quickly getting up to his feet.
“Yeah,” Kai replied as Maverick scooped him up into his arms.
“Well, looking again wouldn’t hurt,” Maverick reasoned, setting Kai on his hip. “And maybe we’ll even see a few stars too.”
“Oh-kay,” Kai agreed with a sigh, laying his head on Maverick’s shoulder.
“And where was your brain during all of this!?” Rooster’s wife snapped loudly.
“Yeah, let’s go look at the stars, Kai,” Maverick stated quickly, hurrying out the back door.
“Was that Mommy?” Kai asked, staring back at the house.
“No, I don’t think it was her.”

Phoenix and you entered Penny’s bar when your phone suddenly rang. Taking it out, the nametag on it made your eyes widen. You touched Phoenix on her shoulder, letting her know you needed a moment. She simply smiled, heading further into the bar to the booth were Bob, Coyote and Fanboy already were. The phone kept buzzing as you weren’t sure what to do. Panicking a bit as to say. You knew not picking up, would do nothing as he would just keep calling you.
Answering was even terrible, as you knew he’d say anything to get you to yield. Like a collective caller, kept he calling you. Looking around frantically, you spotted the first person at Penny’s bar. You rushed over to the bar, pulling Hangman back by his shoulder. – “Emergency, you’re my boyfriend.” – you breathed out, holding the phone out to him. Hangman smiled cocky. – “Well, well. If you were desperate for a kiss, you’d just had to ask Y/n.” – Hangman replied all smug to your annoyance.
“No. No! You’re not actually my boyfriend.” – you informed him hastily. Hangman furrowed his brows, frowning. – “Make up your mind girl.” – he let out confused to what was happening. You moved your phone higher up for him to notice. – “I need you to be my boyfriend and make him stop calling me!” – you called out almost frantically at how slow he was catching up.
“Right.” – He simply said, setting a beer down and taking your phone in his hand. He answered the phone, giving you a cheeky eyebrow wiggle. Hangman didn’t even listen to what the other person was saying on the phone. – “Listen bud, stop calling my girlfriend.” – he spoke through. He heard an immediate response. – “Uhm her boyfriend.” – Hangman answered, showing you a goofy look at how obvious it was who he was talking to.
The man kept blabbing in his ear as Hangman had little interest in keeping him on the phone. – “Stop calling us, bye.” – he spoke in such a manufactured voice, he could work in sales and be dealing with a terrible customer but still upholding his work voice. Hangman hung up, giving you the phone back. – “Thank you!” – you let out relieved, bending a bit through your knees out of gratitude. – “So what do I get in return?” – Hangman asked.
“This beer?” – you suggested, placing your hand on the counter by it. Hangman tsked his tongue. – “Already paid for it sunshine.” – he said with a chuckle. – “Fine.” – you breathed out. – “I’ll clean your locker.” – you took out another suggestion as Hangman thought. – “How about wash my clothes?” – he responded. – “Deal.” – you agreed it was just that. Hangman shook hands with you to seal the deal.
He picked up his beer, throwing his arm over your shoulder. – “Who was the dude anyways?” – he asked, leading you to the others. – “My ex.” – you sighed out. Hangman looked half in shock at you. – “I didn’t know you dated someone.” – he called out as you had to shush his loud voice. – “It was like 6 months ago.” – you informed him.
“And he’s still calling you?” – Hangman blurted out as you hummed with a nod as response. – “I can’t shake him off.” – you sighed out nearing the booth with your friends. – “Well good thing your boyfriend saved the day.” – Hangman winked with a ridiculous smile. – “Not my boyfriend.” – you reminded him before sitting down.
Back in the locker room, you were washing Hangman’s attire. Washing them by hand as he called them delicate and needed to be handled with care. – “Uhm what are you doing?” – Phoenix asked seeing you in the locker room as she had walked by. – “Are those Hangman’s clothing?” – she pointed out when you had pulled it up to see if it was clean enough, revealing his nametag. – “Phoenix!” – you called out startled, splashing some water as your arms lowered immediately. – “Why are you washing his clothes?” – she wanted to know. – “I owe it to him.” – you responded, scrubbing his pilot gear.
“You dared to bet with Hangman. Bold.” – she answered impressed. – “It’s not that.” – you told her with a soft sigh. – “He did something for me, so I have to return the favour.” – you explained. – “Right.” – Phoenix widened her eyes briefly in delight. – “If your dad could see you know.” – she chuckled a bit. – “He’d flip that you fell so low.” You grunted soft. – “Good thing my dad.” – you emphasized. – “Can’t see me.” – you replied bitsy. – “Ohh cold touch.” – Phoenix teased touching her own shoulder. You scooped up some water, splashing it at her to wipe that smile off her face.
Phoenix screamed, dodging away when the water came her way. Half laughing, you teasing her with another scoop as she already darted away. When you were finished up with Hangman’s uniforms, you hung them neatly to dry. You came out of the lockers, making your way out of the hangar when you got pulled aside by Rooster. He pushed you firm up against the wall. – “Are you dating Hangman?” – called out at the brink of losing his mind. – “What?” – you responded confused.
“Are you dating him?” – Rooster wanted to know with a stern look. – “What, no, no…” – you replied waving your hands across. Rooster exhaled deep moving his fingers through his hair. – “Who told you this?” – you asked curious. – “Hangman has been bragging to everyone he’s dating you.” – Rooster let you know. Your eyes widened with shock.
You pushed Rooster a bit back, to make some room for you to leave. You needed to find Hangman and you needed to find him now. Jogging out of the hangar into the open. You saw a group of people near the F16’s going over to them. The closer you got, the clearer you saw Hangman amongst them.
“Hangman!” – you shouted drawing his attention. – “Looks like my girlfriend needs me.” – he said to Fanboy and Coyote all smug. Coyote rolled with his eyes as Fanboy shook his head. Hangman turned round to you, welcoming you with a warm smile. – “Yes my love.” – he said as you grabbed him firmly by the arm, dragging him away from the others. – “So eager.” – Hangman whispered to his friends with a chuckle. You came to a stop, letting harshly go of him.
“What are you doing?” – you called out giving him a little shove. – “Au.” – Jake mouthed pretending to be hurt from your shove. – “Jake!” – you called out wanting an answer out of him. – “What?” – he replied loud, making himself taller. – “Why are you telling everyone we are dating?” – you freaked out. Jake scoffed loud, turning his head away. – “Are we not?” – he answered cocky, wanting to slip his arm over your shoulder. It made you puff annoyed, crossing your arms.
“Oh come on Y/n, don’t be such a baby about it.” – Jake said taking you by the elbow, wanting you to uncross your arms. – “It’s a joke, sunshine.” – he kept tugging at your arm, trying to be smooth and cool at the same time. – “Sunshine!” – you suddenly heard loud, making you straighten your back. Hangman’s back straightened as well. Cyclone appeared coming to you. – “Iceman wants to speak to you.” – he said firmly, making your shoulders slouch. Jake was snickering quietly at you with a little point. – “He asked for both of you!” – Cyclone made clear, making Jake’s smile drop.
You tugged on his elbow, pulling him with you. Following Cyclone inside and up the stairs to Iceman’s desk. Cyclone knocked on the door, before popping his head inside. – “They are present.” – he said to Iceman. Cyclone stepped aside, expression flat as he allowed you to walk in. – “Tell me, am I hanging?” – Jake whispered to Cyclone wanting to know his outcome. Cyclone ignored him, giving him an extra shove into the room. – “Dad!” – you said with mixed expectations, opening your arms to a hug.
Iceman got up from behind his desk, coming to hug you. – “How is my little girl?” – he asked. – “Flying and thriving.” – you told him, making him form a smile on his lips. His gaze then shifted to Jake, who swallowed nervously. Iceman got all serious. He went to sit again, gesturing for you to sit as well. Jake and you sat down, unsure what to expect. – “So you are the one dating my daughter.” – Iceman spoke. – “Dad no…” – you blurted out, waving your hands across.
Iceman observed Hangman closely as it made him move uncomfortable in the chair. – “How’s his flying?” – he asked. – “Superb… sir.” – Jake replied loudly, humbling himself immediately. Iceman glanced your way. You could only smile sheepishly at him. – “I’m a bit saddened you didn’t tell me Y/n.” – Iceman began. – “But he looks decent enough. As long as he doesn’t hurt you… or else…” – Iceman gave Hangman his death stare.
Jake swallowed again. – “Dad we’re not…” – you began wanting to explain as Jake grabbed your hand out of the blue. – “No, no sunshine, it’s okay. He knows now.” – Jake spoke upholding the image of dating. You stared confused at him, why he would even want to go on with his stupid joke. – “Jake, this is my dad.” – you said between clenched teeth to him. Making it clear that he didn’t need to mess around. – “I’m so happy for you Y/n.” – Iceman said cheery.
“The man’s happy Y/n, let him be.” – Jake said to guilt trip you. You sighed soft letting yourself fall back in the chair. Jake got up. – “Well it was nice of you to call us in, sir.” – Jake said, nudging you to get up as well. Your dad chuckled happily at his manners as you could only roll your eyes. Jake extended his hand out to Iceman. Iceman took it to shake. – “I’m not one for favours, but if you ever need one for my daughter.” – he whispered to Jake with a wink.
Jake breathed out a laugh of surprise, glancing your way. Just to rub his it more in your face. – “Now we must really go.” – Hangman spoke tapping your elbow, to get you to follow. – “Give her a kiss.” – Iceman replied. Jake’s expression dropped. – “S’cuse me?” – he blurted out. – “Give her a kiss.” – he repeated gesturing at you.
Jake looked sheepishly at you, chuckling nervously. – “Sir truly…” – Jake began wanting to talk his way out of it. – “I want to see just how much you care for my daughter.” – Iceman persisted. Hangman took your hand, pulling you closer to give a kiss on the cheek. – “Give her a real kiss!” – Iceman shouted out of good sports. Jake sighed loud with a soft drop of his gaze. You raised your eyebrow at him, curious to see what he would do. He took you by the elbow, pulling you even closer.
“Just a quick one.” – he whispered to you. – “One second.” – you responded. Hangman held his finger up to his lips, looking all smug. He lowered his finger, giving you a quick nod before he’d kiss you. Your lips touched for a split second, pulling away quick. Iceman shook his head with disappointment. – “We have to go dad!” – you called out, opening the door. Dragging Jake with you out of his office. Downstairs, you let go of Jake.
“Your joke just escalated Hangman. Now my dad knows!” – you called out panicking. – “Hey you asked me to be your boyfriend.” – Jake replied loud. – “For like a few seconds.” – you shouted back. – “You asked for this Y/n.” -  Jake answered loud taking off. – “Where are you going?” – you called out to him. Jake turned around, pulling his shoulders up. It made you groan loud.
Phoenix and you were stretching before exercise. – “Boyfriend coming over.” – she pointed out, turning her torso, holding her arm by her elbow. You looked up seeing Hangman come over with the other boys. It made you look at her with a certain glance. Phoenix stopped, walking off when Hangman came near. She joined the others behind him. – “You know for a sunshine, you frown a lot.” – he pointed out, touching your forehead.
You slapped his hand away. He grabbed you by the shoulders, moving his head closer to you. – “Smile, your dad is going to watch.” – he whispered making you widen your eyes. Jake moved aside from you, throwing his arm over you as he led you to the others. Maverick, Cyclone and Iceman neared. You all followed Maverick to the beach for a match of rugby. A good team exercise Maverick would call it. Cyclone and Iceman sat down, watching the pathetic play of rugby.
Hangman and you were on opposite teams. Fanboy had the ball, throwing it at Coyote. Hangman jumped in front of him, catching the football before his eyes. He then ran with it to your side, throwing his hard on the ground. He called it out in victory, pointing towards Iceman. Iceman clapped for Hangman’s score. He then looked all smug at you. Phoenix nudged you as you rolled your eyes at him. Trying not to find it sweet. Rooster caught the ball wanting to throw it at you. You caught it, wanting to run when you got picked up from the ground.
Hangman had picked you up, making you squeal loud out of surprise. Your feet hit the ground again, as he kept his arms around you. – “Try getting out of this now, sunshine.” – he breathed out. You wriggled in his grip for freedom. When you weren’t getting any, you tried running. Hangman laughed loud, squeezing his arms tighter around you. – “Where are you going sunshine?” – he laughed out. You tried so hard not to laugh as well, not to enjoy it too, but you failed.
You stopped trying to run, laughing loud. You tossed the football over to Bob. You showed him your empty hands, showing him his attempt to stop you failed. Hangman picked you up in response, making you squeal again. He then pressed a kiss on your cheek so quick, he barely caught himself doing it. You turned round in his embrace, staring a bit at him. Jake stared back at you.
Swallowing, he let go of you, scratching his neck sheepishly. You looked blissful away. The two of you hesitantly got back into the game, questioning whether you were actually starting to like each other or that it was the drive of fake dating for a while now.
After practise, you were all exhausted. Having been playing till the sun had set. Worn out, you all decided to grab a few drinks at Penny’s bar. You went up to her bar as Jake followed. Almost instinctively. You held four fingers up to Penny, ordering beer. Jake leaned with his elbows on the counter, throwing you a smug smile. Your phone vibrated in your pocket. Confused, you pulled it out holding it to the front. Jake’s eye fell on the caller, taking the phone from your hand before you could react.
He picked up, turning around to lean against the counter with his back. – “What do you want?” – he said bothered. Your ex didn’t even have to finish his sentence when Jake spoke again. – “Listen asshole, if you call her one more time. I’ll make sure you’ll never see daylight again. You won’t see me coming. I’ll fly above your house, aiming for your pathetic bedroom and you’ll be burned to crisps in a matter of seconds.” – Jake threatened making you stare in shock at him.
“She doesn’t want you cause I’m her boyfriend. She’s mine and let me tell you ass, I don’t like sharing.” – Jake said over the phone. – “This was your last call or you’re dead!” – he angrily hung up the phone. – “Thank… thank you…” – you said astonished by how hot that was. Jake tugged your phone in his pocket.
Penny arrived with the drinks as he took them, motioning with his head for you to follow. You slid into a booth with him as the others were waiting. Hangman threw an arm over your shoulder, pushing you closer to him. It made you feel like squealing. The lines of pretend and real blurring away. Jake caught you staring at him, melting as he saw you smile like the sun back at him. He moved his head closer to you, wanting to kiss you in that moment, but caught himself just in time.
He shifted his head to the side, kissing your cheek instead. It didn’t feel satisfying, but he wouldn’t dare himself to kiss you out of the blue with everyone around. Your friends were so used to the two of you dating, they hardly had any eye for it. Not clear it was all an act, started from a joke. After an hour or two, checked Jake his watch. – “I’m taking Y/n home.” – he said removing his arm from you. He got out of the booth, taking you with him.
You said goodbye to the others. Jake grabbed your hand, walking out of Penny’s bar with you. Outside he was still holding your hand as it made you snicker soft. – “No one’s watching Hangman.” – you told him. Hangman looked at you with eyes full of affection. – “I know.” – he responded, pausing you. – “Are we still faking it?” – he asked catching you by surprise. Unsure, you pulled your shoulders up. That seemed to answer Hangman enough as he cupped your cheeks, kissing your lips.
The kiss was long, anticipating the moment till he could finally kiss you. His tender kiss moved to longing and desperation as his hands grabbed you tightly. You kissed him back, fully surrendering under his spell. The lines of fake dating having been shattered long ago.

Growing up with Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell as your father, you’d been taught from an early age that you could tell your dad anything. He never let anything you wanted to tell him about feel unimportant. If you babbled to him after preschool about how Sarah had pushed over Tom in the playground, he was giving you his full attention and voicing his own thoughts on the matter. As you got older, you knew you could talk to your dad about any problem that would plague your mind. If someone was bothering you, Maverick would be there to listen and offer advice if you wanted it. He always made an effort to be there for you.
However, despite the trust you had in your dad. There was one thing he didn’t know about you.
Maverick was ignorant of one thing that was going on in your life and that was your relationship with his RIO’s son, Bradley Bradshaw. You’d been raised alongside Bradley, nothing more than half a year between the two of you and while Goose had constantly joked, much to Maverick’s annoyance, that you and Bradley would get together, he never thought it would actually happen. Not until the two of you moved out at least.
You and Bradley were quiet about your relationship, holding hands underneath the dinner table when over at each other’s houses and sneaking kisses when your parents were in another room. On the weekends, when Goose, Carole, and Maverick would go out for most of the day, you would either spend time at Bradley’s house or vice versa, or you would go out on little dates to places you knew neither your parents nor any of your dad’s team frequented, so you’d remain undisturbed. For the first few months of your relationship, this arrangement worked smoothly, and no one was clued into your relationship with Bradley. It wasn’t that you were embarrassed to share your relationship, it was more worry about how both your dad and Goose would react to the news. Carole ended up finding out about your relationship a week before your dad and Goose did, Bradley wanted some motherly advice on relationships, and he had asked beforehand if you were okay with Carole knowing which you were fine with, with the condition she kept it quiet until you and Bradley found the best moment to tell Goose and Maverick.
The moment that your dad and Goose found out came sooner than you and Bradley would’ve liked. One weekend, your dad and Bradley’s parents had agreed to meet up at the beach with Iceman, Slider, and their significant others while you and Bradley had opted to stay behind under the guise of wanting to study together and do school work. After the adults left the house, you and Bradley waited for a minute before shoving your books aside and moving to the sofa. You immediately curled into Bradley’s side as he switched on the television, looking up at him softly as he moved his gaze to look down at you.
“You okay, baby?” He asks softly, his gentle smile never leaving his face as you nod.
“I’m more than okay. I’m perfect.” You reply in a soft whisper, leaning up to press a soft kiss to his jaw.
“You missed.” Bradley says teasingly, leaning down to capture your lips in a sweet kiss which you reciprocate immediately, shuffling in his embrace to kiss him easier as you wind your arms around the back of his neck and Bradley’s hands rested on your hips. However, because you were engrossed in each other’s presence with the tv blaring in the background, you both failed to hear the jangling of keys in the lock and your dad entering the house.
“What the fuck is going on here!?” The shocked and raised voice of your father makes you and Bradley jump away from each other, worry crossing both of your features.
“Dad, what are you doing home? You literally just left.” You say with a nervous chuckle, attempting to diffuse the obvious tension that was filling the room.
“I forgot my wallet and it’s a good thing I did. Now answer my question, what is going on?” Maverick asks, and the moment you open your mouth to try and find a response he holds his hand up to stop you talking.
“Actually, you can explain it to Goose and Carole as well.” He then says, crossing back to the front door and throwing it open to see his RIO and Carole in Goose’s Bronco.
“Goose, get your ass in here! Carole, you too. Looks like a Bradshaw-Mitchell meeting is needed.” Maverick calls out to his friends and waits for them to come into the house, closing the door behind them and ushering them into the living room while you and Bradley remained frozen in place like a deer in headlights.
“Mav, what’s this about? Ice will kill us if we’re late.” Goose says as he enters the living room, barely batting an eyelid at you and Bradley sat closely together while Carole offered a sympathetic smile to the two of you, knowing what you’re about to endure.
“I just caught these two kissing. Like full-on kissing.” Maverick says, an accusing finger pointing at you and Bradley as Goose’s jaw drops, eyes widening as Maverick’s words sink in.
“Wha- these two?” Goose splutters, making you bury your head in Bradley’s shoulder in an attempt to escape the embarrassment.
“Hey, I need a bit of space between you two, back it up.” Maverick says, making you pull away from Bradley slightly to glare at your dad.
“Dad, are you serious?” You ask, and that’s when Carole decides that now is the time to step in.
“Boys, you two need to calm down.” Carole intervenes, getting both Maverick and Goose’s attention on her.
“But they hid this from us for who knows how long? How are you not angry?” Maverick manages to say, running a hand through his hair. At the silence that follows Maverick’s question, Goose connects the dots and turns to his wife.
“Honey, did you know about this?” Goose asks hesitantly, both Maverick and Goose watching Carole carefully as she nods.
“Bradley came to me a week ago. They wanted to tell you, but they were scared about how you would react and just from what I’ve seen their worries were proven right with the way you two have reacted.” Carole says, an accusing glare fired the men’s way as they exchange a look.
“y/n is my little girl.” Maverick weakly argues, making your face heat up at his words.
“Bradley’s my baby boy but I still want him to be happy and if he’s happy with y/n and she’s happy with him that’s all we should be focused on.” Carole says and it was Bradley’s turn to blush now, glancing down at his lap as you slip your hand into his and squeeze it softly.
“Brad, are you happy with y/n?”
“y/n/n, are you happy with Bradley?” Both questions leave Goose and Maverick’s mouths simultaneously. All eyes were on you and Bradley as you briefly glance at each other, smiling softly before looking back over at Goose and Maverick.
“Yes.”
“Yes.” The answers left your mouth in tandem as Bradley ran his thumb over the back of your hand. Goose and Maverick exchanged a look before shrugging.
“It probably was bound to happen, wasn’t it?” Maverick says, a slight chuckle escaping him as he speaks while Goose nods.
“Well I did call it, but I thought they’d at least wait a year until college so we wouldn’t have to be victim to their teenage PDA.” Goose says, receiving a soft slap on the arm from Carole at the teasing aimed at you and Bradley.
“Oh hush, you know we were just as bad. And it’s not like these two haven’t grown up seeing us kiss, honey.” Carole says, leaning up to give Goose a kiss to accentuate her point. With the tension now gone, you curl back into Bradley’s side, smiling as he presses a feather-light kiss to the top of your head.
“Just don’t break each other’s hearts.” Maverick warns gently, glancing between you and Bradley as you nod.
“I wouldn’t dream of it, Mav.” Bradley says, his smile never leaving his face.
“I don’t think I ever could. I love him too much.” You affirm, looking up at Bradley before giving him a soft, gentle kiss.
“Alright, we’ll leave you to it. But I don’t want to be a grandad at this age so be careful you two.” Maverick teases as you groan and toss a pillow at him, missing and narrowly avoiding hitting Goose in the process.
“See that, Bradley? Don’t piss off a Mitchell.” Goose says with a laugh as Maverick rolls his eyes and jokingly shoves him.
“We should make our way to the beach, boys. I’m sure the others are wondering where we are.” Carole says, diverting the attention and both Maverick and Goose nod as you detach yourself from Bradley to find your dad’s wallet and give it to him before he pulls you into a hug.
“I love you, sweetheart.” Maverick whispers, pressing a kiss to your temple.
“I love you too, dad.” You reply before pulling away with a gentle smile. After pulling away from the hug, Goose, Maverick, and Carole bid you and Bradley goodbye and make their way out to the Bronco.
“When we get to the beach someone remind me that Ice now owes me twenty bucks now that we know y/n and Bradley are together.” Goose says as he turns the key and starts the engine while Maverick nods.
“Got it… wait, you made a bet?”

Summary: Maverick once again have to face his biggest fears.
Maverick stood in front of the door with a big box of gift in his hand. The gift is wrapped in an orange wrapper with Rooster prints. He knock several times on the green door outside the bright yellow house. He step back when he heard a footstep approaching the door.
"Dad, you came" A woman with a bright sundress that matched her smile greeted him.
"Hi sweetheart" Maverick move forward to give (Y/N) side hug and she accepts it. They parted apart.
"Please come in." (Y/N) step aside so Maverick could come in. "You know, you don't have to bring anything" she nodded toward the present Maverick bring. Maverick lift his eyebrows at her and shrug his shoulder.
"It's for my grandson, of course, I have to bring something" Maverick grinned at her, he then walked through the hallway towards the living room.
The living room is already filled with balloons and several gifts, on the coffee table, there's a grey birthday cake with an F-18s decorations. number four candle stood in the middle of it.
A little boy wearing a green flight suit sit down patiently in front of the cake, he lift his head when he heard a footstep approaching. His face lit up when he saw Maverick standing in the living room. He then ran towards Maverick that grinned at him and open his arms for him.
"Papa Mav Papa Mav Papa Mav..." He jumps up and down excited with his Papa Mav. He jumps in front of Maverick. Maverick then pick him up and placed him on his hip.
"How's my little soldier doing", Maverick bobbed his nose and Jim scrunched his nose to him
"I good papa Mav. But I don't wanna be soldie' papa mav, I want to be pilot" He whined at him.
"Oh you're gonna be pilot, like the greatest pilot on Navy, Papa Mav," Maverick claimed.
"Noo... I want to be like daddy, daddy's is the g'eatest pilot on Navy" Jim played with Maverick jacket collar.
"Oh, your daddy is the greatest pilot than me?" Maverick teased him and lift his eyebrows at him.
"Yes, he says he saves you on the mission, so daddy is the g'eatest pilot than you" Jim lifts his hands to the air.
"That's right champs, your daddy is the greatest pilot than your Papa Mav" Rooster comes in from the kitchen wearing an open-up blue Hawaiian shirt with a white undershirt and blue jeans. (Y/N) then walked past Maverick to Bradley and hug his side. Bradley slips his arms to her shoulder.
"Really Rooster?" Maverick scoffed at him and lifts his eyebrows at him in disbelief.
"Hey, babe" (Y/N) tiptoe to kiss Rooster and they shared a kiss.
"Eww, daddy and mommy gwoss" James closed his eyes and use one hand to close his eyes.
"That's right, Jimmy, your Mommy and Daddy are gross" Mav taunted them, (Y/N) and Bradley then pull their lips apart and Bradley give (Y/N) forehead a long kiss. Bradley then released (Y/N) and walked toward Mav and Jimmy.
"C'mon champs, let's blow your candle" Bradley lift, Jimmy, from Maverick and place him in his arms.
"Oh, I brought you a present by the way" Maverick kicked the box beside his. Jimmy's face lit up with the words present. He turned his head and stared at Maverick with a big smile. He then turns to Rooster.
"Can I open it, daddy?" He asked Rooster.
"When you're down blow your candle and cut your cake. C'mon champs" (Y/N) called out already sitting in front of the coffee table and lit up the candle.
Jimmy wiggled in Bradley's arms and jump down from Bradley. He runs towards (Y/N) and sits on her lap. Bradley and Maverick followed them, they sit (Y/N) each other side.
They sing Jimmy a birthday song and after the song finished Jimmy blows the candle. They clapped for him, Jimmy then give (Y/N) a kiss and Bradley next.
"Where's Papa Mav kiss?" Mav pouted playfully to Jimmy. Jimmy then stand up from (Y/N) lap and runs towards Mav and he catches him. Jimmy then kisses Maverick on his cheek.
Jimmy giggles on Maverick arms and Mav kisses him on his forehead.
"Happy Birthday James Nicholas Bradshaw" He muttered to him.
"Mav, look at here" Rooster called out in front of the living room, camera in his hand. Mav gives his biggest smile with Jimmy in his arms.
"Wow, Your wrinkled looked prominent in here" Rooster taunted him when he saw the photo he had just taken.
"Thanks, Rooster" Mav rolled his eyes at him.
Rooster then set the camera on Tripod and place it in front of the living room. He then walked and sit in his place before.
"Jim, come sit with Mommy" Jim then stand up from Mav's lap and sit on (Y/N) lap. Bradley scooted closer to (Y/N) and placed his arm around her shoulder. The timer on the camera goes off and they give their best smile for the camera.
****
Bradley shoves his shirt into the green duffle bag that he places on the bed. He shoved the clothes he had just picked from the closet to the next mission he'll gonna attend.
"You know, maybe you shouldn't go this time" (Y/N) walked to the bedroom. A white uniform hanging in her hand, she stared at Bradley with sad eyes. She wearing a satin white nightgown that stopped at her mid-thigh.
Bradley let out a sigh and turn around to approach his wife
"It's gonna be okay honey, I'm with Dagger Squad this time. Even Mav's gonna be there" Bradley slides one of his arms to (Y/N) waist and brushes her hair that gets to her face.
"But I'm worried, I've never felt like this before" (Y/N) pouted.
"There's nothing you have to worry about. I'm gonna be okay, we're gonna be okay" Bradley caressed (Y/N) cheek. (Y/N) slumped her shoulder and let out a sigh. She released herself from Bradley and goes to hang his uniform behind the door. Bradley back to prepare his bag for his mission. (Y/N) smoothering Bradley uniform to remove all the wrinkle.
"Honey, did you know where my cap is?" Bradley called for her while he rummaging through the closet and drawer.
"What cap?" (Y/N) ask him. She turn around and looked at him that rummaging through the closet.
"The one with the white uniform, do know where is?" He turn around to look at her and furrowed his eyebrows.
"Hmmm... I think I saw it before" (Y/N) muttered. She walked out from the bedroom. Bradley let out a sigh and continue his searching.
A few minutes later, (Y/N) come back with a white cap in his hand.
"You mean this" (Y/N) lift the cap in his hand. Bradley then turns around and lets out a sigh of relief.
"Oh thank god" he approaches her and gives her a quick kiss on the lips as a thank you "where did you find it?" Bradley takes the Cap from (Y/N) and placed it on the bedside table.
"In Jim's box of toys" (Y/N) shrugs at him.
"How it can go in there" Bradley exclaimed. (Y/N) then walked toward him and snake her arms around his neck.
"Maybe a certain someone decided to play soldier with his son and father last week," she told him with a shrug.
"What!? Oh... I remember it." Bradley nodded remembering the event. "I mean, Jim wants to have some time with his dad and grandpa" Bradley snakes his arms on (Y/N) waist. They begin to sway each other embrace.
"Of course you are" (Y/N) muttered, she then buried her face in Bradley's neck. She closed her eyes and inhaled his scent. They begin to doing a slow dance in the bedroom. Bradley then heard her sniffles.
"What's wrong baby?" Bradley lifts her head from his neck, (Y/N) wipes her cheeks.
"Nothing" she sniffed. Bradley understands what his wife's sad about. It's about the mission he'll gonna do. "C'mon, there's nothing will be going on. We're gonna be fine, Baby" Bradley reassured her. His wife had never been this sad and clingy whenever he would go on the mission. She knows the risk of being a navy, especially a fighter pilot.
"How'd you know that?" her voice croaked. Tears spill down again. Bradley then wipes the tears from her cheeks with his thumb and caresses her cheeks.
"Don't cry, please. I'm sorry, looked I'll try to call you before I take off for a mission. What'd you think?" Bradley reassured her, he stared into her eyes trying to give her comfort. "And call me too when you're done with the mission"  her tears streaming down now. And Bradley shush her, he brought her again to his embrace. "Of course, of course, baby. I'm gonna call straight away after I land" Bradley muttered in her neck.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know what happened to me. I just feel sad and I want to cry. And now seeing you go to a mission and I'm gonna miss you so much, I'm want to burst into tears" She muttered in his neck and begin to sob.
"It's fine baby, it's fine. Let it out" Bradley stroked her hair gently. A few minutes later, (Y/N) sobs begin to cease. And her cry stopped.
"Feeling better now?" Bradley ask her, she then nodded in Bradley's neck.
"Let's go to sleep, yeah?" Bradley lift her head and (Y/N) nodded at him. She sniffed a few times and Bradley wipe her remaining tears with his sleeve.
"I'm gonna wash my face first" Bradley nodded at her. (Y/N) then turn around to go to the bedroom.
****
When (Y/N) back from the bedroom, Bradley was already laying on the bed, his shirt is off and he just wearing a boxer. A seductive smirk on his face. (Y/N) lift her eyebrows at him.
"Mrs Bradshaw. Wanna come in bed with me?" Bradley pats side of the bed beside him.
(Y/N) folded her arms in her chest and walked towards him. She leaned down towards him
"If I come to the bed with you, what I'm gonna get?" She asks him seductively.
"You are gonna" Bradley lifts his body to a sitting position, his face facing (Y/N). "Get treated like a queen" Bradley lifted (Y/N) and brought her with him. (Y/N) let out a squeal at this.
Bradley shifts his body so (Y/N) is beneath him. (Y/N) giggle at him and Bradley just stared at her eyes lovingly. "You're so damn beautiful Mrs Bradshaw" Bradley whispered to her, he brushed her hair that got to her face.
"You're so damn gorgeous Mr Bradshaw" (Y/N) stroke Bradley jaw.
They giggle and Bradley leaned in to kiss her. (Y/N) kiss him back and tangled her hand in his hair. Bradley lifts (Y/N) thigh and begins to rub himself to (Y/N). Their kiss begins to heat and they let out moans in each other mouths. When Bradley wants to remove (Y/N) panties, the bedroom door cracked open, and a scared little voice comes into the view.
"Mommy, Daddy, you asleep?" (Y/N) heard this voice push Bradley out of her and Bradley landed on side of the bed.
"Yeah, sweetheart. What's wrong?" (Y/N) lifts his body from the bed and sits down trying to collect herself. Bradley just lay in the bed stunned.
There's in front of the bedroom stood James Bradshaw with his Alex the Lion from Madagascar clutched in his chest. He's wearing navy blue Madagascar pyjamas with Rooster printed pants. His cheeks were stained with tears and cheeks red. He jutted his bottom lip, pouting.
"Oh, what's a wrong sweetheart?" (Y/N) walked towards him and asked with concern, she then swoop him in her arms and Jim hide his face on (Y/N) neck.
"I think there's a monster under my bed. Because I heard a weird sound" Jim muttered in (Y/N) neck.
"Oh my baby, it's fine. You're with Mommy now" (Y/N) rock him and shush him to calm him down.
"Can I sleep with you, Mommy?" Jim asked (Y/N) and lift his head from her neck.
"Of course, you can baby" (Y/N) kiss Jim's forehead and Jim hides his face again in (Y/N) neck.
(Y/N) then walked them towards the bed. When they near the bed, (Y/N) saw Bradley pouted, his head resting on the headrest, arms folded in his chest. She rolled her eyes at Bradley.
"Honey.." (Y/N) called Bradley,
"What?" His bottom lip jutted out. "Covered your dick" (Y/N) mouthed to him and pointed to his crotch. Bradley saw where she's pointed out and let out a sigh. Guess, he should wait until he got back from the mission. Bradley then covered half of his body with the duvet.
(Y/N) placed Jim on the bed and he crawled to the middle of the bed. He slide himself to the duvet under him.
"Hey daddy" he greeted Bradley when he settles in the middle of the bed with his lion in his arms.
"Hey champs" Bradley greeted him, he turn his body to the side to caress his hair. (Y/N) then slide to the duvet and lay with them. "Why you not wealing a shiwt daddy?" Bradley is taken aback by the question.
"Yeah, why not you wearing a shirt daddy" (Y/N) turns to Bradley and mock him.
"Daddy just hot baby. So daddy takes off the shirt." Bradley explained to Jim
"Oh, I want to take my shiwt too like daddy" Jim tries to lift his shirt off but (Y/N) stop it
"No.. baby, you're gonna catch a cold if you sleep with no shirt on" (Y/N) explained to him softly
"But I want to be like daddy" Jim whined at her.
"How about, if daddy put a shirt on, you still wearing your pyjamas" Bradley suggested to him. Jim nodded excitedly "Yes daddy, I want to be like you"
"Okay champs, daddy gonna put a shirt on real quick" Bradley kissed Jim's cheek, and he then got up and take his shirt that he throw on the floor.
"Daddy, you have Rooste pants like me.." Jim pointed to Bradley's boxer when Bradley turn around showing a printed Rooster on the back of his boxer. Bradley put his shirt on and slide onto the duvet again. "Of course champs, we're twins" Bradley ruffles Jim's hair.
"I like being daddy twins. I want to have hail on my lips like daddy, Mommy." Jim turned to (Y/N) that stared at him. "Can I have a hail on my lips like daddy, Mommy" He looked at her with his big green eyes.
"Of course, you can baby, but not right now," She told him.
"Why not?" Jim pouted at her. Bradley caresses his blond hair gently.  "Because you have to be taller if you want to grow a moustache like daddy," Bradley told him.
"What mou-mou-tash" Jim a bit difficult to pronounce moustache.
"The hair in daddy's lips" Bradley touches his moustache and lifts Jim's hand to feel it. "Oh, that's called mou-mou-tash" Jim giggled feeling Bradley's stache
"Why don't you dress up like Papa Mav?" (Y/N) suggests to him, because she knows, Jim adores his Papa Mav too. Maverick always spent his time fourth time a week for Jim. He gladly takes Jim from them and forces them to go on date or spent some time together. After Jim able to walk, Maverick will pick him up from the house and take him to the beach behind the Hard Deck every Sunday.
"Papa Mav is cool. But daddy why coolewl." Jim throws his arms in the air and giggles "Don't tell Papa Mav daddy" He told Bradley.
"Of course, my champs" Bradley kissed Jim's cheek. Jim then let out a yawn "I'm sleepy Mommy" He snuggled towards Bradley.
"Sleep my baby" (Y/N) caress his hair.
"Hold me daddy" Jim muttered to Bradley's chest. "Of course, my champs" Bradley tightened his grasp on Jim.
"Daddy loves you Jim" Bradley kisses Jim's forehead. (Y/N) smiled at them and scooted closer to them. She then reach out to snake her arms on Bradley's stomach and she closed her eyes.
"Sleep well my angels" Bradley muttered before he drift off to sleep.
***
"Wow, Daddy, you so handsome" Jim stared at Bradley with wide eyes. Bradley is already dressed in his white uniform, they're in the kitchen having breakfast. (Y/N) is in front of the stove, cooking for breakfast.
"I'm your daddy champs. Of course, he has to be handsome" Bradley then sit beside Jim that busy drawing something, he then takes a sip of his coffee that is already placed in the mug on the table. Suddenly, there's a knock on the door. (Y/N) whipped her head and want to open the door but Bradley stand up for her.
"I got it hon.." Bradley kissed (Y/N) cheek and walked out towards the front door.
***
"Champs looked who I found on the front door" Bradley walked with Maverick behind him, wearing the same uniform as Bradley. Jim whipped his head from his drawing.
"Papa Mav" Jim lift his hands to the air and Mav walked to him and lift him from his high chair. He then placed Jim on his hips. Bradley sits in his chair and begins to drink his coffee
"How's my pilot doing" Mav kiss, Jim, on the cheek. Jim giggle at Maverick "I'm good Papa Mav"
Maverick then blow-raspberry to Jim's cheek and Jim giggled out loud.
"C'mon let's eat you two. Dad, you're gonna wrinkled your uniform" (Y/N) called out to them, she placed the breakfast on the table. She took Jim's drawings and placed mini pancakes on his table. Maverick then placed Jim back in his high chair and Mav sit beside Bradley.
(Y/N) sit beside Bradley and take his plate to place some waffles and bacon on his plate.
"Thank you, babe" Bradley kissed (Y/N) on the cheek and she blush at him.
Maverick smiled at Bradley's family. He finally found his own family that he can take care of. At first, Mav is not happy about Bradley dating (Y/N) because he has one rule for his daughter 'No Dating with Navy Man'. Bradley and (Y/N) hide their relationship from Maverick for six months, but Bradley Bradshaw can make his mouth shut up for minutes and have to blow their relationship in middle of busy day at the Hard Deck. It was their banter with Hangman that made Bradley have to blow their relationship.
Hangman starts commenting about (Y/N) and tries to flirt with her when he saw her at Hard Deck. (Y/N) want to play with Hangman, (Y/N) respond immediately.
It was Phoenix's idea that make Hangman flirting with (Y/N). The other day, she caught them kissing in the parking lot of Hard Deck, she knows how jealous Rooster is if it comes to his girlfriend, so she makes Hangman do it because she knows how Rooster doesn't like Hangman.
Rooster can't take it and blow up his relationship with (Y/N) in the middle of Hard Deck. He shouts out to Hangman about he's dating her and kiss (Y/N) in front of him.
Maverick saw all of this with mouth agape and disbelief.
The next day, he called (Y/N) right away from her work. She works as a nurse in the local hospital.
Maverick give them lectures four hours straight about how Bradley dared to date his daughter and scolded them for hiding their relationship. But Maverick, in the end, has to accept their relationship. Rooster proves himself to be worthy as his daughter's boyfriend.
And now, here they are, married with a beautiful James in their family. Maverick wishes they'll be always this happy and Bradley cherish his daughter. He wants Bradley to experience what his Mom and Dad doing, having loving people that he got called family. He has been placed to call home, he got someone to come home, he got someone always waiting for him.
Maverick hope, Bradley is always happy and not going through what he has to.
He want to pay Bradley with the happiness he stole from him. With the time he stole from him. Maverick want to pay his sin to him.
****
The sound of F-18s whooshing around atop the tree-covered snow filled the silence in this forest. The four jets already finished their mission behind this forest.
"Thank you for your service Dagger Team, we're gonna sweep this place once again. You guys go back to the ship" Maverick announced to the radio.
"Copy that Captain, Dagger three return to the ship" Hangman replies to Maverick.
"Confirm"
"Dagger four, return to the ship" Phoenix spoke to the radio.
"Confirm"
"See you on the base Rooster," Phoenix say goodbye to Bradley. Now Maverick and Rooster are sweeping around the place to watch any enemy or bogey that is still in the area.
"Hey, Mav, did you see James drawing for you" Rooster talked to Maverick from the radio, he looked around to see any sign of enemy.
"Yeah, I got it in my pocket." Maverick click the button in his jet to make it on autopilot, he then pulls a paper from his chest pocket and opens it. There's is drawing of Maverick in his green flight suit with a green crayon, beside him is James.
"Wow, I think he'll gonna be an artist, he has the talent" Maverick examined the drawing in his hand.
"Yeah, I'm surprised with his drawing" Rooster replied on the radio. Suddenly there's a jet behind Maverick that want to knock him from his jet, but Maverick pull his jet up on time so the bogey doesn't get him "Oh shit!" Jim's drawing falls somewhere in the jet.
"What happened!" Rooster asked him, panic rising in him. He try to look for Maverick.
"There's bogey on my tail" The bogey comes back again and begins to chase Maverick, Maverick and the bogey begin dogfighting.
"Stay there Mav" Rooster clicks the button on his jet and picks up his speed to catch Maverick.
"No! Rooster! go back to the ship" Maverick order him, still trying to make the bogey out of his tail.
"I'm not leaving you!" Rooster stated to him.
"Shit! shit! shit!" Maverick curses when the boogie begins to shoot him. Before the boogie can shoot Mav, Rooster comes and shoot the bogey, the bogey Jet exploded and Maverick took a deep breath of relief.
"I got you old man" Rooster taunted him in playfully.
"Thanks, Rooster" Maverick breathed out relief. But out of the blue, another bogey comes and shoots Rooster jet engine.
"Oh fuck!" Rooster cursed, he try to control his Jet, but the shot destroy his airflow. Flames come out from the engine.
"ROOSTER!" Maverick shout out, he chases the bogey and shoots them and they explode.
"My engine on fire" Rooster breathing heavily. He tries to control his Jet but it's too late. His jet swings around in yaw.
"You have to eject Rooster!" Maverick breathing heavily. Panic begins rising in his body. Rooster tries to reach for the eject but it's stuck. His jet is becoming lower to the hard deck. "I can't Mav, it's stuck" Rooster's voice is trembling with panic.
Suddenly, Goose's voice when the accident happened filled his earing. A frantic voice of Goose and him filled his mind.
"Plane's coupling up! Plane's coupling up"
"We're going low Mav."
"I can't eject"
"I'll do it for you"
"Goose, you have to eject, eject, eject" Maverick doesn't realise he shout Goose's name here.
"Goose talk to me. You have to eject!" Maverick shouted out Goose's name again, but he just heard heavily breathing.
Rooster try to pull out the eject but it stuck, his Jet spinning faster, out of control, and his engine exploded.
"EJECT!" Rooster shout out but the explosion hit his head, the canopy debris got in his head when he pull the chute open.
"ROOSTER!" Maverick shout out his name when he saw Bradley get blasted by the engine that explode. "Bradley!" He tries to talk to him over the radio but no response. He waits for a few minutes but no sign of Bradley.
"Dagger one you have to go back to the ship, we're gonna send a rescue team," The crew told him over the Radio but he ignored it. He thrust his jet to where Bradley jet just exploded "Dagger one. Dagger o-" Maverick pull his ejection and let his jet hit the tree in the forest.
Maverick landed on the snow, he released his chute straps and begin to walk finding Bradley.
"Bradley!, Bradley!, Bradley!" He shouts out his name trying to gain his response but no sign of him.
After several minutes of walking, he saw the burning of Jet debris, he ran on the thick snow towards debris.
Besides them, there's laying Bradley Bradshaw in his blood, the white snow beneath him turning to red colour with his blood. Maverick stared at the scene with wide eyes. He ran as fast as he can towards him. "Oh no no no no".
He sits down beside him and pulls off Bradley helmet. When he touches Bradley's head in the back, his hand is covered in blood. His hand trembling "Oh shit, Rooster!" his voice filled with fear. He releases Bradley from his chute strap. He tries to feel the beat on his neck but no beating. Maverick eyes begin to glisten.
"Wake up, son, wake up" Maverick opens Bradley's flight suit and tries to give him a chest compressor.
"Please wake up. Don't leave me here" His tears begin to stream down his cheeks. He breathing heavily. "C'mon C'mon, Son, don't leave me here" Maverick begin to cry over Bradley's corpse.
"Bradley, Rooster, Bradshaw" He shake Bradley body but no response from him.
"Rooster, Talk to me" Maverick placed Bradley's head in his lap. He hugs Bradley's corpse in his arms and begins to rock him back and forth. He muttered sorry to him.
He then let out a heartbreaking cry, an anguished cry that whoever heard him, he know how broken his heart is.
"Bradley.."
One hour later, a copper flew in the sky above them. He didn't bother to look at it, he just hold Bradley's corpse tightly in his arms. He doesn't bother with Bradley's blood soaking his suit. He hold his lifeless body like he would wake up anytime soon.
A group of rescue came to them with a harness. "Sir, it's alright" one of the rescuers tries to take Bradley from Maverick, but he has a death grip on Bradley.
"Sir, it's alright, you have to let him go" He tries again to pry Bradley free from Maverick grasp, but Maverick glare at him and the rescuer step back. They stood there watching Maverick hold Bradley's lifeless body
"Rooster, talk to me" Maverick muttered to himself but Rooster was already dead. Rooster already left them. Left him, left his daughter, left his grandson. Rooster is no longer with them. And it's all his fault. He Once Again has to live a life of guilty with his daughter.
***
The hardest part for Maverick after Goose's death is telling Carole that his husband not coming back, telling Bradley that his Daddy not coming back, that Goose has die.
But, when Goose dies, he's not the one that has to tell Carole and Bradley.
He saw the damage to Carole after Goose died. He saw how broken Carole is, He saw Carole like half of her life is gone. And he has to see all of that in his daughter any soon.
Maverick stood on the porch of (Y/N) and Bradley's house. When they rescue him, the sun already goes down, they flew him the next morning to Miramar. Bradley's corpse is still on the base to get prepared before get send to his house.
Maverick took a deep breath. He try to keep his tears at bay, but every time he saw the door, tears gonna spilt down his cheeks. He took a deep breath and cleared his throat. He walked towards the front door and knock on it several times.
This hours (Y/N) is probably busy preparing breakfast for James and her, she then will take James to Penny whilst she goes to work.
His hand stopped in mid-air when (Y/N) open the door for him. She wearing her blue scrub.
"Dad, What're you doing." (Y/N) smile at him, but when she saw his longing look, she furrowed her eyebrows at Maverick.
"Hey, sweetie" Maverick forced a smile, he can't contain his cry, and his voice cracked every time he speak.
"Dad, what happens? Came in" she asked him with concern. She then opens the door for him and steps aside to let him in.
****
(Y/N) walked towards the living room with Maverick hot in her tail.
"If you want to meet James, he's still asleep though, but he'll gonna wake up soon" She shrugs her arms and sits down on the couch. Maverick just stood in front of her with his shoulder slumped. She furrowed her eyebrows at him. She then stand up and placed her hand on Maverick bicep.
"Dad, what's wrong? Are you okay?" She asked with concern. Maverick lips tremble and he burst into tears. He hug (Y/N) and muttered sorry to her.
"I'm sorry sweetie, I'm sorry" He hugs (Y/N) so tight that it is almost hard to breathe. Her furrowed eyebrows are more prominent now. She hugs him back and holds him. "Shush Dad, what's wrong, please talk to me" (Y/N) rubbing her hand up and down on Maverick's back. His body shaking whilst he crying.
Then it hit her, Maverick is here, but Bradley isn't here. Bradley always comes straight away after the mission is finished. Maverick is back, but Bradley doesn't call her when he has done with the mission. Maverick visited her, crying, looked guilty, and muttered sorry to her.
"Dad please, tell me, tell me, he just hurt, he's in the hospital right now, he just hurt" (Y/N) asked him rapidly, her eyes beginning to water. But Maverick just shook his head at her shoulder.
"Dad, please, he's okay, isn't he? He's coming back right?" Her voice trembles and tears begin to stream down her face.
"I'm sorry, sweetie," Maverick muttered to her. (Y/N) begin to break down. She let out sobbing. Her knees were weak, If Maverick doesn't hold her, she'll gonna fall to the floor.
"Sweetheart, sweetheart please sit down" Maverick bring her to the couch and sits her down. He places her head in his lap and (Y/N) circles her arms at Maverick's waist. She cries on his lap.
***
Maverick stroke his daughter's hair, and he lets her cry on him. He on the other hand can't stop himself from crying. This is her favourite position whenever she broke down or is sad. When she has her first heartbreak, when she has her first fight with Bradley, or when she got sad watching The Blind Side.
He waits for her to calm down. When she calmed down, Mav turn her head to face him. He wipe her daughter's tears, he examined her face, her eyes were bloodshot, and her cheeks and nose is red colour. He kiss his daughter's forehead and muttered sorry to her.
(Y/N) lift her body to a sitting position.
"Came here" Maverick brought (Y/N) to his embrace and hold her.
"Why did he leave me, Dad? He promise to come back" Maverick just hold her, he doesn't know what to say, he just kisses her hair and muttered sorry to her.
"What I'm supposed to say to James? Oh God James, he's gonna miss his dad so much" he rubs her arms up and down. Mention of James, his tears begin to fall again.
"Tell me dad? Did he in pain?" (Y/N) lift her head to look at Maverick.
"He looked so peaceful, sweetie." Mav brushed (Y/N) hair that got in her cheeks.
"I want to see his body" Her bottom lip trembled.
"I'm gonna brought you to the base, he's there now." Maverick nodded at her as a sign of promise. (Y/N) bury her face on Maverick's chest and she cries again.
"Mommy" a little voice called out from the bottom of the stairs. James wearing his Rooster pyjamas with Alex the Lion in his arms. He rubs his little fist to his eyes.
"Hey sweetheart" (Y/N) stand up and walked towards James, she pick him up and placed him on her hips. James looked at her with concern."Why you crwing, Mommy?" He touched (Y/N) cheek.
"Oh, Papa Mav just told me a sad story sweetheart" (Y/N) wipe her tears with her sleeve.
"Hey, Pilot" James whipped his head to the sound and Maverick waved to him. "Papa Mav" James grinned at him and he wiggled in (Y/N) arms and run towards Maverick.
Maverick brought him to his lap. "Why you crwing too Papa Mav" James wipe Maverick cheek with his sleeve
"The sad story got me too" Maverick forced a smile.
"Don't worry, I'll tell you a funny story that dad told me before, you and mommy" (Y/N) covered her mouth with her hand to contain her crying. She turns around and lets herself cry in her hand.
"Oh really? Sound good, Pilot" Maverick kisses James' forehead. He spitting image of Bradley. James giggles at Maverick and kisses his cheek.
"Mommy, I'm hungry" James called her mother, (Y/N) wiped her tears and turn around to face him. She forces smile. She bends down to level with him on Maverick lap. "Okay, could you wait with Papa Mav here, I'm gonna prepare for your breakfast" she stroked his hair.
"Okay Mommy" James nodded, (Y/N) kissing his forehead and muttering "I love you sweetheart" to him.
"I love you too Mommy." James kisses (Y/N) cheek in response.
****
(Y/N) walked towards the bathroom to wash her face. When she was inside the bathroom, she stood in front of the sink. She begin to cry again, she tilted her head down and begin to sob loudly, her shoulder shook, and her tears hit the positive pregnancy test in the sink.

it’s just a tattoo, charlie brown! (p.m.m.)
a/n: this came up in an anon ask months ago (i’ve since lost it) and i need something wholesome in my life. in honor of me seeing tg:m a year ago, have this. this was the inspiration for the tattoo.
summary: The one where Rebel convinces a begrudging Maverick to get matching tattoos.

You clear your throat, clasping your hands on the table in front of you. Your Dad raises an eyebrow as he glances up at you from his pancakes. “I have a proposition for you.”
"Oh dear.” He mutters, wiping his mouth on a napkin. “What?”
You slouch at his response. “You don’t even know what I was proposing. I could’ve been proposing we take a day trip to Anaheim and go see an Angels game tonight.”
“Are you proposing we go see an Angels game tonight?”
You hesitate. “...No.” You straighten up, shooting him a bright smile. “But it’s a good proposition! I promise.”
He sighs, leaning back into the squishy material of the booth he’s sitting at. “Ho ahead.” He nods his head, gesturing for you to speak.
A grin spreads across your face as you eye him carefully. “What if we got matching tattoos?”
“Absolutely not.” It only takes him a half second to respond and you slouch again.
“Why not?”
He shakes his head, picking his fork up. “I don’t care what stupid things you and Machado get tattooed on your bodies-”
“Oh, they’re not stupid, I promise!” You pick up your phone from the table next to you, pulling up your camera roll. “Look, I was thinking we could get matching Snoopy and Woodstock tattoos.” You slide the phone across the table to him. “April even drew up a cute one of Snoopy and Woodstock in a plane.”
He sighs, sliding the phone back across the table to you. “They are cute. Why don’t you just get a Snoopy and Woodstock tattoo?”
“Because that’s not the point.”
“I’m in my sixties.” He says, mouth full of pancake. “I’ve gone this long without a tattoo.”
“Which is why you should start now. You know, before you get old and gross.”
“You’re not doing yourself any favors.” He says with a pointed look.
“But-”
“I do kind of like the idea of going toAanaheim now. Wonder if we can find tickets the game tonight.”
“Would you at least think about it?”
“No.” He says, pulling out his phone. “We’re not getting matching tattoos. My answer is no.”
“That’s what you said about the dog.” You mutter under your breath.
“What was that?”
“Nothing!”
-
You huff, turning in your chair to face your boyfriend. “Bradley, I need your opinion on something.”
He nods, pulling his attention way from the Angels game to you. “What’s up honey?”
“Look at this tattoo April drew up for me.”
He huffs out a laugh, taking the phone out of your grasp. “’S cute, honey. You thinking for you?”
You nod. “Yeah, me and Dad.”
He raises an eyebrow. “Mav’s getting a matching tattoo with you?” d says, sitting back down in his seat next to you. He hands you the nachos he’d gotten with the same pointed look he’d given you this morning in the diner. “I told you no.”
“No.” Your Dad says, sitting back down in his seat next to you. He hands you the nachos he’d gotten with the same pointed look he’d given you this morning in the diner. “I told you no.”
“Also what you said about the dog, Mav.” Coyote says from the other side of Bradley. “You don’t have much ground to stand on here.”
“Javy’s got a good point.” Penny comments from the other side of your Dad.
He whips towards her. “Who’s side are you on here?”
She laughs, nudging him as he gives her a grin. As his attention turns back to the game, you grumble.
“I’ll wear you down eventually.”
“What was that?”
“Nothing!”
-
“Hey Hondo, should my Dad get a matching tattoo with me?”
He chuckles, turning. “Obviously, my vote’s yes.”
“Hondo!” Your Dad calls from further behind you.
“What tattoo are we talking about?”
You pull your phone out, pulling up the sketch April had drawn. “This.”
“Oh wait, that’s not half bad.”
“Thank you-”
“My answer is still no.” Your Dad says, out of breath as he jogs up to you and Hondo.
“You’ll push past Mach 10 but won’t get a tattoo with your only daughter and child.” Hondo says, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah.” You agree, crossing your arms.
“I have plenty of children. Thirteen of them to be exact.”
You huff.
-
“Please.” You borderline whine, slumping down on to the couch. “Don’t tell me you haven’t given it any thought.”
You jut out your lip, pouting. Your Dad raises an eyebrow, giving you an unimpressed look. “Stop looking at me like that.”
“Only one I’ve got.”
His face doesn’t change, still looking thoroughly unimpressed. “That face hasn’t worked on me since you were seven.”
“You’re a liar, I could get anything I wanted with this face.”
“It’s not happening.”
“Oh, c’mon!”
-
“Hypothetically,” Your Dad starts, prompting you to raise your head. “If we got these tattoos, where would you want to get them?”
Your fork clatters to the plate.
You dive for your phone across the table, trying to pull up the new sketches April had drawn up for you. “Okay, I ended up hating the original one, so April redrew them. I was think just above the inside of your elbow? So there’s sort of a flat line?” You say, sliding the phone across the table. “I liked this more since Snoopy’s on the top of the doghouse. April drew up a little one with Woodstock for me too.”
He chuckles, looking at the phone. “Okay, I don’t hate this.”
“So you’ll do it?”
He sighs, handing the phone back to you. “I’ll think about it.”
-
“I can not believe you convinced me of this.” He grumbles, pushing the front door of the tattoo shop.
“Won’t it be so fun? We’re bonding.”
He huffs, shaking his head. “That’s one way to look at it.”
“Well, if it isn’t my favorite Mitchell.” April calls as she walks out of the back. Her eyes drift over to you, coming to stand in front of the two of you. “Oh, you’re here too.”
You roll your eyes as your Dad chuckles. “Shut up April.”
“Hi April.” You Dad say warmly. “How’ve you been?”
“Good, I’ve been good. Nice to see you both. You daughter tells me you want to ge thatching tattoos today?”
Your Dad gives a weary sigh as you grin.
“I’ve been told I can’t say no to her.”
“To be fair, Mr. Mitchell, you’ve always been like that.”
-
“Soooo....” You draw out, watching your Dad carefully. “Do you it hate it?”
He lets out a little laugh. “Honestly, no.” He says with a shake of his head. “If only Ice could see us now. He probably thinks I’m an idiot.”
“Yeah, well, Slider’s impressed you managed to hold out this long.”
“Two months.” He says, holding up his fingers. “I held two months.”
“Yeah, and that’s the longest it’s ever taken me to get what I wanted.”
“This is something permanent. On my body.”
“With all due respect, you took significantly less time to say yes to the dog, Mr. Mitchell.” April comments.
Your Dad sighs, unable to argue with that.
You straighten up in your seat. “Well, I’m thrilled you finally said yes. Now, when people ask me about it, I get to see that I have a matching tattoo with my Dad because we were both pilots. I get tell them how he always read me the Peanuts comics and told me abridged stories growing up. That I’m a pilot because of him and now I get to have a matching tattoo with him that reflects it.”
Your Dad sighs, taking a long look at you as he lets his hands fall to your shoulders.
“Well, if you had just put it that way, I probably would’ve said yes the first time you asked.”
“Oh, I hate you.”

Letting Go Ch. 7 Nightmares
Thank you all for the love! Hope you enjoy this little update!
Read on A03; Tumblr: Letting Go Masterlist
Mav’s still out on the couch just fixing to lock up for the night when he hears it. He had a feeling Bradley wasn’t as ok as he let everyone else believe before they scattered off base. That feeling was reaffirmed when the kid said he was spending his entire leave here. He knew they’d talked and things were mostly better between them, but he couldn’t believe Bradley would want to stay here six full weeks if he was really ok.
The next scream he heard, his name at that, had him hurrying back through the door. “Bradley. Kiddo, hey you’re ok.” He didn’t want to touch him yet having had enough of his own nightmares to know better, but it was hard. He knelt beside the bed, bruises and ribs be damned. “Bradley, wake up!” He made it sound like an order hoping it would work.
Bradley jerked up in the next instance gasping for breath. “Hey. Hey you’re ok. I’m going to turn the light on and then sit down on the bed,” Mav said gently. He reached up and turned the lamp on beside the bed before pulling himself up to sit on the side of the bed. “B?” he asked hesitantly, reaching out.
In the next instant he had an armful of Bradley, the kid burying his face in Mav’s neck. “Hey. Hey, it's ok. Slow deep breaths,” he said, trying to keep his own breathing steady so Bradley could match it. It took several minutes, but he finally felt Bradley’s breath even out and then he was pulling back.
“Sorry,” he murmurs, wiping his face and not meeting Maverick’s eyes.
Maverick cradles Bradley’s face in his hands so he’ll look at him. “There’s nothing to be sorry about, you hear me B. Nothing.”
Bradley gives a little nod and Maverick pulls him back into a tight hug. “I had a feeling you weren’t as ok as you wanted everyone to think.” He cards his hand through Bradley’s hair. “You wanna talk?”
Bradley shakes his head and Mav has to hold in his sigh. “Ok. But when you’re ready we can. Think you can go back to sleep?”
“Not yet,” Bradley croaks and his voice is hoarse.
“Alright, come on.” Mav pulls him up once more and Bradley goes willingly. He settles him back on the couch, drops a blanket in his lap and goes to get them another drink. He comes back and sits down beside Bradley passing him the drink. He’s not surprised when the kid scoots as close as possible. He throws his arm around his shoulder as they drink in silence. It’s another fifteen minutes before Bradley breaks the silence.
“Mav?”
“Yea kiddo?”
“Does it ever get easier?”
Mav lets out a soft chuckle as he puts their bottles on the table in front of them. “Sometimes. Depends on the day, the mission, what’s happened.” He takes a deep breath before pressing his lips to Bradley’s hair like he used to do when he was a kid curled in Mav’s lap. “Right now… no, it’s not easy. But we’ll get through it.”
“How’d you do it?”
Mav chuckles softly. “Well your mom tried to get me to go to a therapist every time I was on leave. That never worked. I told her I went, but I never did. I don’t think she ever believed me, but she never called me on it. I think she knew I would talk to someone when I needed it.”
“Yea. Who was that?”
“Your Uncle Ice.”
Bradley let out a soft chuckle and a nod. “Mav?” he whispers.
Mav hums. He has a feeling he knows what’s coming, but he lets Bradley ask anyway. “Who you gonna talk to now?”
Mav pulls him back into a side hug. “Don’t know yet kiddo. But just because they’re gone doesn’t mean we still can’t talk. We just won’t get their sage wisdom thrown back at us.”
“Yea I remember,” Bradley smiles. He remembers all the times Mav and Ice and his mom at times reminded him it was ok to talk at the cemetery. It’s because of them he still goes out there and talks, catches his parents up on all that’s going on with his life.
Mav cards his fingers through Bradley’s hair. “Think you can sleep now kiddo?”
“Can we stay here?”
Maverick chuckles softly knowing he will regret it in the morning when his ribs are hurting, but he can’t deny his kid anything. “Yea. If you want.”
Bradley lays down and turns his face into Mav’s stomach, same as he used to do as a kid. “Night dad,” he slurs, already halfway to a dead sleep.
“Night kiddo.” He lets his fingers run through Bradley’s hair until he’s sound asleep. Once he was sure Bradley was going to stay asleep, he stretched his legs up onto the coffee table and laid his head on the back of the couch. They both slept, probably the most sleep they’d had since being back on land, and even though they were both stiff and sore from sleeping on the couch, neither regretted it.
The next few nights are rough. Bradley tries to sleep in the room Mav has set up for him, but he barely gets an hour of sleep in there before he’s woken from nightmares. It’s usually the same thing on repeat; Mav goes down protecting him, Bradley screams his name. Sometimes Mav wakes him up there, sometimes it’s harder to come back and the nightmare continues. Sometimes he and Mav don’t make it into the air in the F-14; sometimes they don’t make it back to the carrier. But every time without fail, Mav is there to pull him back.
Instead of the couch, they’ve taken to staying in his room since his bed is bigger than the one in the airstream. After that first night of sleeping on the couch, Mav’s ribs protest too much, and Bradley refuses to do anything to make his dad’s injuries worse. He hates that he’s the reason Mav isn’t getting much sleep either, but he doesn’t know what to do because he doesn’t feel ready to talk just yet.
After a week of Bradley not talking to him, Mav makes the decision that they go back to town. Bradley’s not that surprised when they pull up at the cemetery, but he still doesn’t feel ready to talk. “I’m going there,” Mav says so softly that Bradley barely hears him. He’s pointing towards where Bradley knows Ice is, so he just gives Mav a nod. He reaches over and squeezes Bradley’s knee before getting out, leaving him to decide what he wants to do.
He hears a door close and he lets out a sigh before finishing the trek to the one headstone he thought for sure he’d never see, almost certain he wouldn’t outlive his wingman. He follows Bradley’s movements to his parents graves and lets out another soft sigh. “Please let this work,” he whispers before catching Ice up on things.
Bradley knows what Mav is trying to do, and while he appreciates the gesture, he’s not sure he wants to talk here either. He finds himself heading to his parents' graves anyways, and he sinks down into the ground between their headstones. He can see Mav in the distance, but he stubbornly remains quiet. He watches Mav for the longest, not really wanting him out of his sight. “Mav’s with me this time,” he finally whispers, glancing between the two headstones he’s seen so much he knows by heart.
“I know you both will be happy about that. I know I said last time that I was ok, that he got us home…. But I’m not ok.” His head lolls to one side closer to his dad’s headstone as he lets it sink in that he’s finally admitted he’s not ok. “Dad’s not ok either. I know he’s hiding his own nightmares, but maybe you or Ice can give him some guidance here,” Bradley whispers. He lets his eyes close as he feels the sun on his face, and in the next moment he feels a gentle breeze.
Tears sting his eyes before he swallows deep. “Yea… me too,” he whispers. He wipes his eyes before he pulls himself up. “I know I didn’t say much, but maybe you two aren’t who I need to talk to this time.” He gently kisses his fingers before touching both of their stones and heading over to Mav and Uncle Ice.

Stepping up on his toes, Maverick throws the fabric around the back of Ice’s neck, wrapping it snugly around and making sure the ends are even on both sides of Ice’s chest. Mav’s hands are so warm it makes him dizzy. To make matters worse, he then shucks off his bomber jacket, throwing it over Ice’s shoulders and bringing it close to his chest. The inside of the jacket is toasty, and it smells like Mav.  “Are you sure?” Is all Ice can say. Mav smiles up at him, the snow decorating his dark hair like glitter. “Of course. It looks good on you anyways.”

It takes Maverick about a minute to notice you standing in the doorway to his office. He’s swamped with paperwork, his pen nearly running out of ink at the scrabbling he’s been doing the past couple of hours. It seems you’d both ended up with irritable days, hence the reason you found yourself here in the first place.
It was late, thank God, and no one was really around anymore and you really didn’t feel like leaving base and spending the rest of the evening sulking alone at home. You knew that Captain Mitchell was staying in late, knew that if you didn’t wander in to see him, you might not see him at all over the next couple of days.
It was a bad habit he had. He gave you too much space.
“Lieutenant,” he greets you now, a small smile curving the end of his mouth at the sight of you.
You ignore his propriety, stepping inside and shutting the door behind you. You try to match his smile. “Hi, Mav.”
He immediately drops the act. Eyes darting from you to the closed door, he asks in a hushed voice, “What are you doing?”
You approach his desk, your failed smile replaced by a frown. You want to hug him. You want him to hug you, you mean. To make it all better. You’re not sure how to ask for that, though.
“Just wanted to see you,” you say instead, curious hands reaching for the objects on his desk.
He doesn’t break eye contact as he takes each object from your hands, placing them back in their spot as you move them. “I’ve got a lot of work to do, sweetheart.”
Your heart sinks a little at the rejection, and he seems to notice the disappointment cross your face.
“Come here,” he says then, beckoning you over with a single nod.
You step behind the desk and into his space, leaning down to meet him for a kiss. It’s risky; you didn’t lock the door and the blinds aren’t fully shut, but the kiss lasts maybe two seconds. It’s fine.
Mav smiles and looks up at you with a soft glint in his eyes, the one that reads I’ll see you soon, okay? It’s the look he gives you every time he sneaks out of your house, or drops you off. You’ve started to dread it. There’s so much uncertainty that comes with it. Every single time you see him after that affectionate look, he’s just your instructor again. The affection is gone and you’re never sure when it’ll return. It doesn’t matter how much you ache for him.
Boy, how badly you ache for him now. A kiss is never enough.
You’re almost going to swallow your pride and leave his office, seemingly satisfied with the one little kiss, until your eyes land on his lap. Then at his paperwork, then at the door.
He cocks an eyebrow, curious.
Fuck. You slowly stride over to the door, battling with your choices, but decide you have no intention of leaving.
“Wh–” Maverick sits up straight at the sound of the door locking, and then watches as you move towards the windows to start shutting the blinds all the way. “What are you doing?”
“I wanna try something,” you say confidently, like he already gave you permission.
“Try something?”
“Mhm.” You shut the last set, take a step back to make sure they’re all closed and then turn your attention to him again. “Blinds shut, door locked. I think you’ve left for the day.”
He opens his mouth to protest, but nothing comes out. He drops his pen instead, tilting his head as he tries to figure out what it is you’re planning.
He sort of gets an idea when he notices your eyes scanning his side of the desk.
“Baby, I do have a lot of work to do.”
You smile. “And if I promise you won’t get your hands dirty? At all?”
Mav chuckles, shakes his head like it’s the most absurd idea he’s ever heard. It might be, you think, but it’s something you can pull off. The door is locked, after all.
“I think we’d be really stupid if we tried,” he admits, though his smile doesn’t falter.
“You don’t have to do anything,” you reiterate. “I just want to sit there. You can continue working.”
It’s like he opens his mouth to protest again, but then his lips press together instead, and he beckons you toward him with a nod like before.
Excitement fills you as he scoots his chair back to grant you access.
It’s hard to get on your knees in the cramped space underneath the desk, so you have to urge Mav to move his chair back with a gentle push to his legs. He complies, does his best to make as much room for you as he can. You find that you’re sort of shaky when your fingers pry at the button on his jeans, so he helps you with that, too. The position is slightly ridiculous, the chair a little higher than it should be, so you end up on your haunches when you pull his cock out of his briefs, and then sort of yank his garments down with your other hand for easier access.
His eyes are still nervously peering at the closed blinds, making sure there aren’t any shapes or sounds coming from behind them, but you ease his worries when you take his shaft into your mouth. There’s no time to prolong this, so you get right to it; you take him in as much as you can, using a hand to stroke him at the same time. His knuckles are white from gripping the arms of his chair as he hardens in your mouth. Stifled groans leave his lips, filthy wet ones coming from yours.
He throws his head back in silent satisfaction when you swirl your tongue around the tip, and accidentally groans out loud when you dip your head and trace your tongue down, and then back up his frenulum.
The noise he makes reminds you that you’re not supposed to make him cum here, that this is something different, and you pull back after a minute or so. Maverick is biting down hard on his lip, watches as you stand up off your haunches and immediately work your pants off. He shifts in his seat, positions himself as best he can for you.
With your pants completely off and kicked aside, you grab onto his shoulders and mount yourself atop his lap. Hovering above him, you reach down to grab him and line yourself up with him the best you can; usually he would do that for you but you did promise he wouldn’t have to get his hands dirty.
“No moving,” you prompt, exhaling softly at the feel of his tip against your slit.
You whimper at the stretch—it stings just a little from lack of foreplay—but gradually sink onto him little by little. You let your body accommodate him, feel yourself growing wetter around him before you sink any lower. He tenses up, tries to minimize his reaction by gritting his teeth. The long groan that leaves his mouth is inevitable when you fully slip onto his lap, his cock buried inside you to the hilt. Christ, this is gonna be harder than you thought.
He seems to think so too, as his grip around your waist tightens slightly. “Sweetheart, I don’t—I don’t think this is such a good idea,” he groans.
“Just get back to work,” you whisper, arms wrapping around his shoulders.
His hands leave your waist to resume his task, but his breathing remains heavy near your ear. You relax into him, face buried in the crook of his neck, breathing him in. You’ve got your hug. This is all you wanted today.
Maverick scoots his chair forward as best he can, picks up his pen and shuffles through his papers.
You try not to clench around him, a very difficult problem when he scoots forward slightly a second time, his balls rubbing up into your clit. You try to focus on something else, on his scent, past him at the frames on the wall, on the bits of light coming in through the blinds.
A minute passes.
Two minutes pass.
Three, and Mav still hasn’t touched pen to paper yet, clearly dazed by the situation. His eyes skim over the words he’s already written instead, trying to give his brain an idea on where to get started again.
He wants to move very badly. It’s a terrible itch he needs to scratch.
He starts to think that this is maybe a form of torture. You try not to think much of it, try to pretend this is the hug you were here for, and it sort of works. Sort of. His cock prods at a very delicious spot inside you the more he begins to shift his hips, and it becomes harder and harder to stay still.
It’s when you hear his pen drop and roll across the desk that you realize Maverick is not so fond of your idea. Get back to work how, he must be thinking, and God, you hope he’s not frustrated that this whole ordeal probably just set him back.
If he is, he doesn’t show it, instead wrapping his arms around you and inadvertently rolling his hips underneath you. You gasp, taken by sudden surprise, clasping a hand over your mouth when his hips jerk a second time.
“Mav,” you whisper. “I said—fuck, I said no moving.”
He scoffs, bows his head to lazily kiss at your collarbone. “You’re killing me. I’ll never go back to work like this.”
You bite back a moan. “I promised you wouldn’t get your hands dirty. I just wanted to sit he–”
He shuts you up with a sharp, fully intended snap of his hips. His arms drop to cup the bottom of your thighs, and neither of you care anymore after the first stroke. The sound of skin meeting skin fills the room and it’s hard not to make any additional noise, suppressing your moans into little whines instead. Maverick starts fucking into you as if it were the first time, as if he’d never felt something so good before.
Neither of you last very long.
Maverick’s thrusts get sloppy when you’re both seconds away, his tiring pace beginning to stumble. He’s smart enough to take you in for a deep kiss when you both cum at the same time, your quiet, high-pitched noises trapped in between your mouths. He continues kissing you through your unplanned orgasm, tongue licking against yours.
When he pulls back, you’re both panting heavily, savoring the glow.
He helps you off of him eventually. Your legs are a little sore and shaky, and you clumsily stumble back against his desk. Maverick’s good reflexes prevent your fall, an arm around your waist, and you avoid landing on his messy stack of paperwork. You can’t help but snicker at how absurd this really was.
Maverick, on the other hand, has a smirk on his face at the sight of you propped over his desk.
