Important Lessons Learned from Gabby and Brian
As an author and advocate for survivors of domestic violence, I’ve learned a lot about the predictable patterns of unhealthy relationships. After years of personal experiences, research, and outreach, I’ve learned to recognize the tell-tale signs of abuse. I am not a licensed therapist, social worker, police officer, or minister. So please understand I shared my thoughts as 3 a.m. musings. When a few people asked me to make the post public, I agreed, reluctantly. I had no idea this message would resonate with so many people. I've worked back through the original post to explain a bit better how I'm feeling. I realize not everyone will agree with me, and I respect all opinions and views. All I ask is that we engage in respectful discourse on all sides. Thank you all.
In recent days, the tragic events involving Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie have given us a lot to learn. This case is still under investigation, and I can only make assumptions based on the textbook patterns of abuse I’ve witnessed too many times to count. I also recognize that multiple families are grieving, and I have tremendous empathy for everyone involved. However, many survivors will resonate with at least some of the following insights, and I’m hoping we can use this tragedy to shift the way we as a culture approach the complicated issue of domestic abuse.
Let’s examine 30 important lessons this couple teaches us:
1. Followers on social media saw a smiling, happy couple, full of love and wanderlust, setting out for a cross-country adventure while documenting all the joys of young life. In many cases, targets become very good at smiling through the pain.
2. When the public was shown body camera footage captured by Moab City Police officer Daniel Robbins, (who pulled Laundrie and Petito over after the 911 call on August 12), some viewers assumed Petito was suffering from mental illness and Laundrie, while nervous, was the steadier of the two.
3. Other viewers assumed both partners were equally at fault—the old “it takes two” myth that doesn’t really apply to most abusive situations.
4. Some people even assumed Petito was the abuser and Laundrie was the victim.
5. These three assumptions probably crossed everyone’s mind as a possibility (they did mine). Healthy minded people tend to give others the benefit of the doubt, especially when someone is being accused of a negative act. Also, we can all understand that mental illness is a difficult situation and can tax even the kindest most gentle of souls (and the people who love them). Unfortunately, in many cases, this thought pattern leads us to assume the victim is mentally ill or that the victim is to blame for an altercation.
6. “Victim blaming” can happen even in the worst cases of abuse because we don’t see the longitudinal story unfolding. What we don’t see is that the target has managed to keep things together until she reached her threshold, at which time we may see her crying, yelling, or breaking down emotionally. By exhibiting those behaviors, many might assume the target is “crazy,” and it’s natural for us to feel as if the more stable person is more trustworthy.
7. If we listen carefully to Laundrie’s conversation with the officers, he even laughs and says, “She’s crazy.” (17.09) Then he dismisses it as a joke. Of course, he’s already put this claim in the officers’ minds (and by the nonchalant way he says it, many might assume it’s not the first time he’s said these words.)
8. So while viewers (and officers) start wondering if perhaps the target is “crazy,” the abuser plays the part of the poor, patient partner who has to deal with this irrational person. In the video, Laundrie mentions Petito’s anxiety and her OCD, painting her as an unstable partner. (Please note: I’m not at all justifying any physical violence against either party. No one should intentionally harm any other person. Period.)
9. A typical abuser would be skilled at convincing people that he’s innocent, while in fact he’s been acting very differently behind closed doors, pushing his target to this point intentionally and feeding on her emotional break. Many abusers LOVE to see evidence that they’ve hurt their target. They LOVE to see their target in pain. For this reason, “breaking” the target is usually the goal from the start. In cases of abuse, it may take an abuser hours, weeks, months, or even years to break the target, but he won’t stop until he gets that reaction, and then he’ll point the finger and say, “See? She’s crazy. I’m just trying to keep her calm.” And then he’ll do it again. And again. And again.
10. As a result, some people will buy into that false narrative. Even the target can be brainwashed to doubt her own truth. Which may be one reason we see Petito making many excuses for Laundrie’s behavior and taking the blame for everything.
11. In contrast, we see Laundrie blaming Petito, insisting he never hit her and saying he was just trying to keep her calm. He’s charming. He comes across as the loving and loyal partner. He’s joking around with the officers and even gives one a fist bump in the end. All the while, his fiancée is at risk of being charged with domestic assault and possibly spending the night in jail.
12. Later, we’ll hear the 911 recording that (it seems) the responding officers were not fully informed of at the time: “I’d like to report a domestic dispute.” The 49 second audio recording continues as the caller says, “The gentleman was slapping the girl.” When the dispatcher asks him to confirm that the man was slapping the girl, the caller responds, “Yes, and then we stopped, they ran up and down the sidewalk, he proceeded to hit her, hopped in the car, and they drove off.”
13. But long before the 911 call was made public, many survivors could already see through the spin playing out on the video footage. They easily recognized the “red flags” because these cycles become the norm for victims of long-standing abuse. Many targets eventually become conditioned to believe everything the abuser does is her fault. Covering for the abuser, accepting all the blame, trying harder to make the abuser happy—this warped reality becomes the only truth a target knows.
14. Also, it seems clear that Petito doesn’t want her fiancé to be in any trouble. She’d rather pay the price and protect the man she loves. And because she probably believes he only acted this way because of her mood/behaviors/anxiety/OCD/job, she doesn’t want him to be blamed. This is also the norm in abusive relationships.
15. Many experienced and well-trained officers see right through this typical pattern. Others buy the cover-up story. And, sadly, because some officers are also abusers, some side with the abuser even when they know exactly what’s going on. Throughout the video, we get the sense that Officer Robbins senses there’s more to the story.
16. I credit the police in Petito’s situation, especially Officer Robbins. The four responding officers (two of whom were park rangers) remained calm, they separated the couple, they interviewed them individually, they split them up for the night, they consulted the domestic violence shelter … many would say they did everything right considering the information they had at the time.
17. I imagine the officers involved may be suffering from tremendous guilt and wondering if they could have prevented Petito’s death, but I want to give credit to the officers in this case. While it’s easy to look back and say maybe they should have handled things differently, knowing what we now know, I was impressed with how well they treated both Laundrie and Petito (and, sadly, I was thinking how rare it is to see that level of respect and professionalism in most cases of domestic violence, particularly in the South where I’ve been most involved with survivors’ stories.)
18. After Petito was reported missing, many people expressed shock in response to the Laundrie family’s refusal to cooperate early in the investigation. Petito reportedly lived with the Laundrie family for more than a year. Anyone can see that this family will do anything to protect their son, even at the cost of an innocent young woman who was a real part of their family and soon to be their daughter-in-law. While most of us can certainly understand parents wanting to protect their son, most would agree they crossed a moral line when his fiancée went missing.
19. But perhaps it goes deeper than that. Perhaps what we’re seeing is a system of enablers who not only allowed their son to abuse Petito (which may have been a factor in her reported anxiety) but also a system of gaslighters who may have always been shifting the truth to keep Petito confused and make her believe she was the problem.
20. It’s not a far stretch to assume Petito was caught in a system of abuse. And once a target is caught in that psychological web, it’s extremely difficult to see a way out. Reality becomes flipped.
21. It’s also worth noting that Petito and Laundrie had been involved in various levels of a relationship since their teens. This is also commonly observed in dysfunctional partnerships.
22. These immature relationships work beautifully when both partners grow together and mature emotionally. But when one wants to keep the other down, naïve, and under his control … and the other is growing, learning, and maturing … it doesn’t work.
23. We hear Petito tell the officer that Laundrie didn’t think she could succeed with her travel blog (3.25). It seems clear that he didn’t believe in her and that he was trying to make her doubt herself.
24. Throughout the conversation, he implies that he locked her out of the van because she wouldn’t calm down. But when we listen to the full video, it seems he was upset because they’d spent too much time at the coffee shop with her working on her website when he wanted to go hiking. This suggests that because she wasn’t in the van when he was ready to leave, he lost his temper.
25. In the moments that followed, the altercation became physical. Reportedly, Laundrie squeezed Petito’s face with his hand, cut her down verbally, and criticized her.
26. Some would argue that this escalating abuse typically persists until the target reacts emotionally and/or physically. If this case follows the norm, Laundrie may have been trying to break her spirit, intentionally.
27. Why? Again, if this case follows the typical situation, it would likely be because Petito’s focus wasn’t 100% on Laundrie. She had found this new job she enjoyed. She was succeeding at it, and it was allowing her to connect with other people. (Remember, she’d already left her job as a nutritionist to travel around the country with Laundrie.)
28. In a healthy relationship, the new job might be considered a positive opportunity for Petito. Especially considering Laundrie admits they have very little money (not even enough to afford a hotel room to prevent his fiancée from going to jail). But in an unhealthy relationship, the abuser wants the target all to himself. And when that doesn’t happen, he can become increasingly violent.
29. Petito now had this one little piece of her life that Laundrie couldn’t control, so if we’re looking at textbook patterns, perhaps her blog angered him. Perhaps he didn’t like all the attention she was getting on social media. Perhaps he punished her for it. And then a cycle developed. Even though she was doing nothing wrong by building a new career.
30. The next thing we know, we have a missing person, a recovered body, a young man on the run, and several families destroyed. Too much grief to measure. And the truth is, it will happen again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, until we learn to recognize and respond to abusive situations in healthier ways.
The overall takeaway?
When we see someone at her emotional end during a domestic dispute, we shouldn’t assume she’s crazy. We shouldn’t buy into the false narrative given by the abuser. We shouldn’t believe the cover-up story by the target who has been conditioned to carry all the blame and shame. And we shouldn’t assume they’re going to be okay.
Instead, we should all learn the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships. We should learn to recognize the warning signs of abuse. We should engage in respectful, fact-based conversations about trauma bonds, abusive cycles, and emotional intelligence. We should be familiar with terms like gaslighting, hovering, love bombing, enabling, triangulating, and projecting. We should stop blaming targets and help them reclaim their truth. And we should stop repeating the age-old myths that keep targets trapped in these dangerous and all-too-often deadly cycles.
Finally, while I’ve used the most common scenario of male-on-female violence in this article, we should recognize that abuse crosses all barriers and can impact anyone regardless of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, religious affiliation, age, or socio-economic level. And we should stop assuming these situations will get better in time. Personally, I haven’t heard of one abusive relationship that became healthier. Not one. Not with therapy. Not with church. Not with prayer or forgiveness or complete surrender. When an abuser is determined to destroy his target, he will not stop until that target is erased from this world or stripped from her life. And in many cases, he’ll walk away without any consequences, often taking the target’s finances, home, vehicle, reputation, or even her children with him.
Please don’t let the next statistic be you or someone you love. For support, contact the Domestic Violence Hotline. From a safe phone, call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or text “START” to 88788.

Hi! Thinking of Dumbledore + Sirius, do you think Sirius would feel sympathy for Dumbledore if he knew about how torn he was btw his siblings + feeling trapped? I judged him harshly at first, but now I think about the difficulty about losing both parents + sibling, but not wanting to sacrifice everything to step in as parent + guilt that comes with that. I do think Dumbledore loved his siblings + I was happy when his bro said he did a good job with their sis before her death.
hi! this is an interesting one hm
the thing abt dumbledore is that i’m pretty sympathetic to him all things considered- i’ve never really taken the time to explain my feelings about him on here but i definitely don’t think he’s snape levels of “fandom should see he’s irredeemably terrible!”, though i have a lot of qualms about him. he’s certainly not the hero rowling thinks he is, but he’s also not the guy rita skeeter says he is, to put it succintly.
on the one hand, i do think canon mostly fails to acknowledge that he was very manipulative/calculating and made a lot of very cold (or just plain terrible) choices- everything to do with sirius, for one, as well as the whole dursley situation. i know there’s a couple of reasons harry had to live with them (supposedly...) and i can’t be bothered to go into them, but even then i never understood why he couldn’t have done to petunia what he does in OOTP (?) sooner- send a letter to scare the shit out of her and remind her to treat harry decently or at least leave him to his own devices. like, there was so much he could have done in the years between the potters’ deaths and hogwarts- that squib neighbour was already spying/reporting for him, so he was fully aware of it all, idk. i just find that whole thing exemplary of his callousness. it’s more unforgivable to me than raising harry knowing he might need to die for the cause- because that was necessary to defeat voldemort, but giving harry an escape from abuse was so avoidable. his handling of other characters also doesn’t paint him in the best light, sirius as most obvious suspect- there’s a good piece on tumblr about sirius being a liability in his eyes because he’s not loyal to dumbledore or his cause above all else, but to the potters (and ultimately harry) and his own code, and i really think it’s the best reading of dumbledore’s handling of sirius in OOTP, because i always found that kind of insane. it’s brain-dead obvious that the worst thing to do with sirius (especially if you were worried about his unhinged state and whatnot) would be sticking him in grimmauld place- even if they had to keep him hidden, they could have let him floo between order hideouts! see other people! prowl london as a dog! it’s insane that dumbledore of all people would be that dumb about it, so it makes the most sense to me as him locking sirius up where he’s the most contained.
on the other hand, dumbledore was both a quirky schoolmaster and a wartime militia leader, and i think a lot of the weirdness in his character is bc rowling set out to write a much more child-like series than she ended up writing. dumbledore is a pretty iconic guy in the books, manipulations included- he’s such a chessmaster, and he has flair, as kingsley would put it. most importantly he clearly tries very hard to orchestrate the best possible outcome for the entire world- not based on arbitrary beliefs or personal whims, but because he’s sort of the main bastion of hope in the wizarding world. i don’t necessarily think his actions in this context are all excusable, but he’s a war-time leader, and pretty much knows it’s all down to him- although the order is certainly competent, it’s a very ragtag group of people dumbledore holds together, and in terms of skill, knowledge and aura he’s their biggest asset. he’s already been through a wizarding war where he probably set out to murder the love of his life, another wizard supremacist wackjob! we know he’s long past egoism- he’s genuinely For The Greater Good, and he clearly cares about harry; his choices are undoubtedly not made lightly. it’s also important to note just how bad wizarding society as a whole is on these issues- even the most muggle-friendly wizards are remarkably ignorant about them (arthur weasley), and everyone else is at least marginally bigoted; bigotry is built into the fabric of their society, and their government is extemely complacent/corrupt, so the order and their ilk are very much on their own, while people like the malfoys are tolerated despite the open secret of their wartime alliances. dumbledore has a tough job, and he doesn’t know all the things the reader knows. so i think the op-eds calling him Just As Bad As Voldemort or whatever are missing any nuance.
then we get into dumbledore’s backstory. it explains a lot about him, i think. it’s interesting to me that he’s so consistent as a character- he has always been about The Greater Good, and he’s always had an ego, but as a child he let the latter dictate the former and as an adult he forever attempted to substract it from himself lest he repeat the same mistakes. some more questionable rep from ms rowling in having her (1) gay character be the guy literally seduced into wizard supremacy by his evil boyfriend, but i always liked that beat of a very isolated extremely intelligent character drawn into a warped sense of righteousness- it’s also very consistent of dumbledore to believe he’s doing the best for someone when he’s not really thinking about that at all, which is the case with his sister. obviously his family’s story is tragic, and then he gets pulled into this fake vision of a better world, validated in his brilliance, and then there’s his mother’s death, and then his sister, and suddenly it’s all come crashing down and he spends the next years of his life slowly realizing he’s the only one who can stop a project he might have been overseeing once. aberforth lays into him for it, and fair enough, but jesus, what a shitty spot to be in fresh out of hogwarts. i don’t know if it’s because i’m an older sibling, but i can understand the horrible burden of knowing that it’s always on you to think of yourself second, even when you’re inches away from the best thing in your life.
getting sidetracked- the question was about sirius and dumbledore. the thing abt LMV is that i try to keep my own opinions out of it; the marauders-dumbledore dynamic is a difficult one. they all respect him endlessly, and in school i think they adored him, but as a wartime leader it gets complicated. i think in canon their relationship was better, just a little strained (and a little more for others) bc of his style of leadership- you know, keeping secrets, playing games etc. in LMV, though, his machinations got them personally into some shit, so i wagered things would be more terse. james i think thinks most positively of him, as he is wont to do so, except where he is somehow at odds with sirius, because his loyalties there are clear and he is far more violently protective of sirius than he lets on. lily is a close second, because she’s a big picture thinker and gets how hard his job is, but she tends to be wary of his reasoning. remus is a more distrustful person by nature, and dumbledore using him for werewolf stuff wears him down. sirius is not a fan of authority, does not like secrets, and hates people using him as a pawn, so things are most strained for him, obviously. i think a lot of dumbledore introspection in LMV is from sirius’ POV, somewhat accidentally, so he gets a harsh rep.
to finally get to the specifics of your question: would dumbledore’s backstory get sirius to sympathise? arguably not much. sirius is a tricky guy, esp because i write him in a period that we know nothing about. he’s not a cocky slightly feral 15 year old, and he’s not a traumatised 30 something prison escapee; i try to get a plausible balance, so i don’t lend sirius in LMV so much of OOTP sirius’ world-weary wisdom. he’s 21, and in a war where the other side are wizard nazis he’s mostly related to somehow; he sees things in blacks and whites almost necessarily. so either you’re good or bad, trustworthy or not. peter crossed the threshold, so he’s dead to him; regulus turned himself in, but he’s one of them, so sirius doesn’t know what to do with him. sirius might understand how hard it is to have younger siblings you love fiercely who don’t understand your commitment to a higher goal, but dumbledore was on the wrong side of things that time, so i don’t think he would draw any sympathetic parallels- i don’t see why he of all people would feel bad for where dumbledore’s youthful aspirations of wizarding supremacy lead him, despite his good intentions. he’s not very forgiving of bigotry, i think especially because he’s cut all ties with his own background so harshly.
tldr; i feel for the guy, and his life was fucked, but sirius probably would not, and dumbledore got enough unwarranted hero worship considering his dodgy actions that i don’t resent sirius for holding that grudge.

1. have you ever gotten soap in your mouth for cursing? do you think that’s right to do to kids who curse?: Nope. I didn’t say any curse words as a kid for one, but also I’m pretty sure my parents wouldn’t have done that if I did. They would have just talked to me about it and tell me not to say them. I personally don’t like the soap punishment, I think it’s dumb. I’ve heard of some parents who use hot sauce instead, which is just horrible. I understand if you don’t want your kid to curse, but you don’t have to torture them. Just talk with them and explain why it’s not nice to say and that kids shouldn’t speak that way or whatever. Don’t make too big a deal about it. Try not to curse around them either, that’s where they likely hear it and you can be an example for them. If talking doesn’t work then take something away like a toy or some computer time or whatever. I think it’s also important to reward kids when they’re behaving, even just acknowledging it. That can go a long way.
2. what age do you think is appropriate for kids to start watching horror movies with lots of gore?: Well, I personally don’t think kids should watch that at all. I’d say wait until they’re in high school.
3. do you know what the word “polyamorous” means? and did you ever hear that song by breaking benjamin?: Yes I know what it means, no I haven’t heard that particular song by them.
4. how many bug bites do you currently have?:  Zero.
5. what’s one word you always have trouble spelling and can’t remember the correct spelling of?: Whenever a question like this comes up, “onomatopoeia” always comes to mind. That’s a word I never use except for these questions haha, but yeah I can never seem to remember the spelling, I have to Google it each time.
6. what’s one band that really sucks live?: I’ve never seen a bad live performance, but I’ve heard things about some bands that I haven’t seen, such as Maroon 5. I’ve heard they’re pretty bad. :X
7. do you go to warped tour? why or why not?:  I’ve never been.
8. do you have any wind chimes outside your house? how many?: Yes, a couple.
9. do you know someone who actually had someone give them a bouquet of real roses and one fake one, and tell them they’ll love them until the last one dies?:  I’ve never heard of that lol but awww how corny and sweet.
10. which do you like better, firefox or internet explorer?: Firefox out of the two, but I use Chrome.
11. who is the most attractive person on your street?: I haven’t seen all my neighbors, but I don’t find the few I have seen attractive.
12. do you have a flat stomach? would you ever wear a belly shirt to show it off?:  I have a flat stomach, but noooo you’ll never see me in a crop top. I’m waaaaay too self-conscious for that.
13. which do you prefer on yourself, long or short hair?: Long, which is what I have, but it takes more energy and maintenance than I can give right now and I should just cut it short again. :/ I just can’t bring myself to do it for some reason, though.
14. what about on your preferred sex? long or short?:  Short.
15. with eyebrow piercings, do you prefer the ring or the curved barbell?:  I don’t care for eyebrow piercings, personally.
16. have you ever pierced something yourself? why and what was it?: Nooooo. I would never. I’m terrified of needles and don’t do well at all when getting blood work done, and that’s by professionals. I could never attempt to pierce myself with no experience at all. I’d also be scared of doing something wrong or causing an infection.
17. would you date someone who was five years older than you?:  Maybe. I think that’s the oldest I would go.
18. i heard of a girl whose boyfriend cheated on her with a 13yearold (he’s 18) and got her pregnant, so she left him. what would you have done if you were in her situation?:  Omg. I’d have left him, too, but I also would have reported him.
19. how old was the youngest person you ever found attractive? and how old were you?:  Just a year younger than me.
20. isn’t it annoying when you’re trying to start conversation with someone and all they say is “yup” or “really now” or something like that?: Ugh, yes. If they’re clearly not into it or they’e distracted then forget it, what’s the point? I can’t keep a conversation going if the other person isn’t putting anything into it nor would I want to even try.
21. if you have aim, do you have any linked screen names? how many?: AIM died.
22. which of your favorite bands released a new album last?: Hmm. I’m blanking at the moment.
23. are you waiting for any bands to release new albums? which ones?:  Not in particular, but I’m always down for new music.
24. what’s your favorite store for buying cds and such at?:  I haven’t bought a CD since like 2011. I usually just went to like Walmart or Target. I also bought a few CDs from a place that sold old records/albums/cassettes, though. That’s also the place I sold all my CDs to.
25. what’s the point in buying dvds like “girls gone wild” and other porn if you can get tons more online for free?: I don’t know, ask someone who watches porn. 26. if you had to have one drug (illegal ones, like marijuana and cocaine and all of them) right now, what would it be?: Marijuana is legal here, but that’s the only drug I would do.
27. would you ever get a sleeve or a half sleeve on your arm (we’re talking about tattoos)?:  No. I only want one little one.
28. do you have a wireless mouse and/or keyboard?: I have a laptop, so it has a built-in trackpad and keyboard.
29. do you think your biological parents love each other?: Yes.
30. do you have callouses on your feet?:  No.
31. did you see the commercial for that “foot grater” on tv that basically shaves the callouses off of your feet? isn’t that nasty to think about?: Gahhh, yes. 🤢 It was so gross.
31. what’s your favorite color combination (ex. pink and purple)?: I love pastel colors together.
32. ever been to watchmovies.net? what do you think of the quality of the movies there?:  Yeah, back in the day. I totally forgot about that. The quality wasn’t too, too bad on the ones I saw.
33. what’s one movie you’re dying to see but haven’t had the chance to see yet?: There’s a few movies that were supposed to come out this year that I wanted to see, but that’s obviously not going to happen. 34. would you rather live alone in a huge mansion or alone in a small studio apartment?: I don’t want to live alone at all, but if I had to choose I’d definitely choose the small studio apartment. I wouldn’t want to live in some huge house by myself. That would make me a lot more anxious and uncomfortable. I don’t even want a big house like that for my family and I, it’s just so unnecessary. We’d only need a house big enough for 4 adults and a doggo to live in.
35. if you came across child porn on your computer, what would you do?:  Omg, that would mean I was hacked somehow. I’d be disgusted and horrified and try to get rid of it as quickly as possible. Are you supposed to report that kind of thing? I would think so, so that it could be taken down and hopefully catch whoever distributed it.
36. what’s the last computer game you played?: The Sims 4. It’s been a couple years, though. I get urges to play, but I’m too lazy.
37. what’s the name of the street you live on?: I’m definitely not sharing that.
38. would you ever dye your entire head blonde?:  No.
39. what’s the randomest thing you ever heard of someone collecting?:  *shrug* I have a rock collection, so who am I to judge. lol.
40. how often do you use “<3” or “:]”?: I don’t use :], I use :) Anyway, I don’t use emojis or smiley faces super often, but sometimes when I feel they’re fitting. I know some people who get a little carried with them.
41. isn’t it annoying how people walk around thinking hollister logo tshirts and ripped jeans are preppy, even though those things would never be allowed in a prepatory school because of the dress code?: >> *stares blankly in “I don’t care”* <<< Hahaha, for real.
42. how do you feel about abortion?:
43. what’s one thing your grandmother does that you can’t stand?:  She doesn’t do anything that I can’t stand. My grandmothers were/are (my maternal grandmother sadly passed away 15 years ago) sweet, loving, and adorable. haha.
44. did you ever notice how it’s more tragic if a younger person dies than an older person, even if they both died of the same cause?:  Loss of my grandparents was heartbreaking for me, I had a really hard time with their loss. Them being older didn’t make it any easier. I think why people find it even more devastating when a child dies is because they were so young and hadn’t even had a chance, yet, like their life had just begun. There was so much still to experience. They should have had a lot more time. Even a young adult because it’s like their life is also kind of just beginning in a way, perhaps they just started or finished college, were about to start a new job, or were about to get married and start a family. They, too, have so much still to experience and should have had more time. But still, losing someone who is older is still just as sad. I think some people just can sometimes find a little comfort in the fact that they had lived a long life and got to experience a lot.
45. when’s the last time you snuck around, and where did you go?: I don’t have to sneak around. Never have.
46. how often do you wash your hair?: Every couple days.
47. do you think the price for a movie ticket is too high these days?: Well, these days movie theaters aren’t even open. However, I don’t think it’s the movie ticket price that’s too high, it’s getting stuff at the concession stand that racks it up. The food and drinks are ridiculously overpriced. I just have to get some popcorn, though. I miss movie theater popcorn with salt and lots of butter.  48. have you ever been to a drive-in movie theater?:  Yeah, a few times as a kid. Actually, the last time I went was to see the Willy Wonka movie with Johnny Depp when it came out. I wish they still had drive in theaters where I live. I think they should make a big comeback, I mean that’s perfect for social distancing. We can stay in our own cars, closed off from others, but still enjoy movies on the big screen.
49. what’s your favorite musical?:  Sweeney Todd (the one with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter).
50. what do you think of dr. seuss?: I was a fan as a kid, I loved his books. They’re classics. I actually have a Star-belly Sneetch stuffed animal, which is a character from his book, The Sneetches.

862.
1. have you ever gotten soap in your mouth for cursing? do you think that’s right to do to kids who curse?: >> I did get soap in my mouth, but not for cursing; for “talking back” or being “fresh”, mostly. I was (understandably...) too afraid to do anything as brash as curse. I don’t think it’s an appropriate disciplinary measure at all, unless your mission is to confuse and frighten your child into obedience... which, apparently, is a lot of parents’ ultimate goal, it seems.
2. what age do you think is appropriate for kids to start watching horror movies with lots of gore?: >> I really don’t have a solid opinion about this. I tend to skew a little unorthodox on this front, which is probably best left unexplored (fortunately, this is all hypothetical and I’ll never have to address this situation in real life).
3. do you know what the word “polyamorous” means? and did you ever hear that song by breaking benjamin?: >> I know what it means, and I do remember the Breaking Benjamin song.
4. how many bug bites do you currently have?: >> Zero.
5. what’s one word you always have trouble spelling and can’t remember the correct spelling of?: >> I don’t think there’s any word like that. Spelling and phonics is one of my few strong suits.
6. what’s one band that really sucks live?: >> I don’t know, I haven’t seen any that I thought sucked performance-wise (I have seen a few whose music I just didn’t care for, like some opening acts, but that has nothing to do with the quality of their performance).
7. do you go to warped tour? why or why not?: >> I have never been to Warped Tour. I just never got an opportunity to go, or I was never interested, or whatever.
8. do you have any wind chimes outside your house? how many?: >> No. Some neighbours have them, I think.
9. do you know someone who actually had someone give them a bouquet of real roses and one fake one, and tell them they’ll love them until the last one dies?: >> I’ve never even heard of that.
10. which do you like better, firefox or internet explorer?: >> Firefox.
11. who is the most attractive person on your street?: >> ---
12. do you have a flat stomach? would you ever wear a belly shirt to show it off?: >> I no longer have a flat stomach, and you wouldn’t catch me dead in a crop top.
13. which do you prefer on yourself, long or short hair?: >> I like how I look with long hair, but I prefer the low maintenance of short hair. So, I buzz my head, and I wear wigs when I feel like it. Best of both worlds.
14. what about on your preferred sex? long or short?: >> ---
15. with eyebrow piercings, do you prefer the ring or the curved barbell?: >> I have no opinion.
16. have you ever pierced something yourself? why and what was it?: >> Yeah, I pierced my ears a few times. I did it because I wanted to? And also because I couldn’t afford to have them professionally done. I also did it when I was 16 because my father wouldn’t let me get a cartilage piercing, so I pierced my own ear at work one day. (My father eventually noticed because I put the most ridiculously obvious jewelry in it... hold on, I’m going to find a photo of what I’m talking about because like... what did I expect to happen)
Tumblr media
looked something like that. I straight up deserved to get caught.
17. would you date someone who was five years older than you?: >> I don’t date, but that wouldn’t be a dealbreaker if I did.
18. i heard of a girl whose boyfriend cheated on her with a 13yearold (he’s 18) and got her pregnant, so she left him. what would you have done if you were in her situation?: >> I... just can’t imagine being in this situation, sorry.
19. how old was the youngest person you ever found attractive? and how old were you?: >> Oh, I don’t know. Probably not much younger than myself; my tastes always skewed older (oftentimes much older).
20. isn’t it annoying when you’re trying to start conversation with someone and all they say is “yup” or “really now” or something like that?: >> Not necessarily, unless they’re usually much more exuberant and participatory than that. Then I’d wonder if something was wrong (and if it was my fault).
21. if you have aim, do you have any linked screen names? how many?: >> ---
22. which of your favorite bands released a new album last?: >> I’m not sure.
23. are you waiting for any bands to release new albums? which ones?: >> No.
24. what’s your favorite store for buying cds and such at?: >> Back in the day when that was my primary mode of listening to music, my favourite music stores were Virgin Megastore and Tower Records. Ah, nostalgia.
25. what’s the point in buying dvds like “girls gone wild” and other porn if you can get tons more online for free?: >> Well, people generally do watch more porn online nowadays, I think. But the benefit of having a DVD is that... you never have to worry about the video being taken down, and you always have it available (so, even if you don’t have internet connection, etc). It’s the same argument for having paper books or movies/shows on DVD, really.
26. if you had to have one drug (illegal ones, like marijuana and cocaine and all of them) right now, what would it be?: >> Well, marijuana is technically legal here (although I think new recreational dispensary openings in this city have been kinda interrupted by the whole pandemic business, so it’s still a bit hard to access for now). The only drugs I’m even interested in anymore (besides maybe a little low-THC weed, just to see) are psychedelics, and I don’t just want to take them casually, I want a tripsitter or a therapist present. So it’s more complicated than just “getting the drug”.
27. would you ever get a sleeve or a half sleeve on your arm (we’re talking about tattoos)?: >> I would love that. I have had the idea to have a tree-rings tattoo down my left arm like the astronaut character in The Fountain for years.
28. do you have a wireless mouse and/or keyboard?: >> No, my keyboard and mouse are both wired, which is logical. Wouldn’t it suck if I was in the middle of a boss fight in FFXIV and the battery in my keyboard or mouse just fuckin died? Yikes.
29. do you think your biological parents love each other?: >> They did not love each other, from my perspective. I don’t even know if my father is capable of loving anyone, the way he fucking acts.
30. do you have callouses on your feet?: >> No.
31. did you see the commercial for that “foot grater” on tv that basically shaves the callouses off of your feet? isn’t that nasty to think about?: >> That is nasty to think about, and I don’t think it’s even necessary. Anything to make a buck, I guess.
31. what’s your favorite color combination (ex. pink and purple)?: >> I don’t know, I like a lot of colour combinations.
32. ever been to watchmovies.net? what do you think of the quality of the movies there?: >> Yeah. I don’t like sites like that because I can never get good subtitles and also they’re always buffering and shit. I can’t put up with that anymore, I paid my dues back in my literally-broke days.
33. what’s one movie you’re dying to see but haven’t had the chance to see yet?: >> Everything on my watchlists across the four streaming services I patronise. I just don’t always have movie-watching energy (or time), so it’s slow going to get through all my watchlists.
34. would you rather live alone in a huge mansion or alone in a small studio apartment?: >> Alone in a small studio apartment. Unless the huge mansion had a staff, because I really can’t fucking imagine keeping a mansion clean and maintained otherwise. But... huge mansions often come with a lot of acreage... and no neighbours... that’d be nice.
35. if you came across child porn on your computer, what would you do?: >> How the fuck would that even happen? Let’s not get silly here.
36. what’s the last computer game you played?: >> Final Fantasy XIV.
37. what’s the name of the street you live on?: >> Eh, let’s not.
38. would you ever dye your entire head blonde?: >> No.
39. what’s the randomest thing you ever heard of someone collecting?: >> I don’t know, most things people collect seem random to me.
40. how often do you use “<3” or “:]”?: >> Rarely.
41. isn’t it annoying how people walk around thinking hollister logo tshirts and ripped jeans are preppy, even though those things would never be allowed in a prepatory school because of the dress code?: >> *stares blankly in “I don’t care”*
42. how do you feel about abortion?: >> I am pro-choice.
43. what’s one thing your grandmother does that you can’t stand?: >> ---
44. did you ever notice how it’s more tragic if a younger person dies than an older person, even if they both died of the same cause?: >> It does seem that way to people, but I don’t see it that way myself. Of course I’d rather die when I’m old than, like, right now, but hey. It be like that.
45. when’s the last time you snuck around, and where did you go?: >> I don’t have to sneak around.
46. how often do you wash your hair?: >> Once a week, provided I remember.
47. do you think the price for a movie ticket is too high these days?: >> Not here, it isn’t. In NYC, it was fucking astronomical.
48. have you ever been to a drive-in movie theater?: >> No. I’d like to one day, that seems fun. But only if I have a convertible, lol.
49. what’s your favorite musical?: >> Phantom of the Opera.
50. what do you think of dr. seuss?: >> I’ve never read him (that I can remember) and I don’t care.

All that apply for Edix!!
oh boy this is gonna be a LOT under a cut bc tbh I’m just gonna do all of them >.>
Tumblr media
01: Do you have a good relationship with your parents?
“It’s better now with my dad. We hit a rough patch during the Red War after he ran away to Titan and left me practically in charge of everyone, since they recognised me as the Commander’s son and all. It wasn’t a good time for a while between us, but we got better and now we have a better understanding of one another too. My Pa? He’s long since dead, before I was resurrected too, so I don’t have a relationship with him.”
02: Who did you last say “I love you” to?
“..... I’m not sure. I feel awkward saying it sometimes, like it’s reserved for romantic relationships only. Though I say it to dad sometimes, and to Artie too.”
03: Do you regret anything?
“A lot. Not being able to save my Fireteam in the Hellmouth being one, not being able to save Cayde being another. Lots of things.”
04: Are you insecure?
“.... Yes. Though it’s not so bad anymore, not like it used to be at least.”
05: What is your relationship status?
“Complicated. I like Asher, but sometimes I think he just sees right through me. Though I’ve taken to actually going out into the City more at night with some friends. That’s led to a loooot of kissing various Guardians.”
06: How do you want to die?
“I’d prefer not to, to be honest. Though I’d like to avoid death by Hive at least. I’m not sure, I’ve never particularly thought about a final death kind of scenario.”
07: What did you last eat?
“I don’t remember.”
“You had cookies Zavala made you, because you forget to eat.”
“Oh yeah. Dad makes great cookies.”
08: Played any sports?
“Does running around Io for Asher, collecting samples and fighting Vex count?”
09: Do you bite your nails?
“Only when I’m nervous, but even then I’m more likely to just fiddle with loose threads or bounce my leg.”
10: When was your last physical fight?
“Two days ago when I needed to gather samples of Radiolaria and Phaseglass for Asher. I’m still finding bruises from that.”
11: Do you like someone?
“Asher. But he doesn’t see me, not really. At least, not outside of being his assistant, I don’t think.”
12: Have you ever stayed up 48 hours?
“Yes, and I don’t remember any of it. I try not to do it too much, Spiro is forever telling me off and so is Dad.”
13: Do you hate anyone at the moment?
“Since I don’t count, no I suppose not.”
14: Do you miss someone?
“Yes. I worry for Artemis when she’s out on Hive murder-sprees and I... often miss her greatly. Cayde too.”
15: Have any pets?
“Too many! I have three cockatiels, two cats and an Ahamkara!”
16: How exactly are you feeling at the moment?
“Weary and very tired.”
“Well that all-nighter you pulled in your greenhouse didn’t exactly help.”
17: Ever made out in the bathroom?
“Probably? I know that I made out with a Titan on my first night out when I was very much wasted, but whether it was in a bathroom or not I couldn’t tell you.”
18: Are you scared of spiders?
“.......”
“He stands there like he’s rooted and cries if it’s a big one. He’s that scared of them.”
19: Would you go back in time if you were given the chance?
“Yes. I know it’s never a good idea, but... I know I could save Cayde, if I could go back in time. I know I could get to him on time.”
20: Where was the last place you snogged someone?
“In the corner of some club in the City, I think.”
21: What are your plans for this weekend?
“Studying my plants and tending to my garden.”
22: Do you want to have kids? How many?
“God no, never. It’s hard enough just taking care of Kilgharrah and myself, let alone anyone else.”
23: Do you have piercings? How many?
“I’m tempted to get some, at least some in my ear.”
24: What is/are/were your best subject(s)?
“I don’t really know. I’m good at botany and horticulture, and I’m learning more about the Light in-depth but other than that I don’t know.”
25: Do you miss anyone from your past?
“My Pa. I didn’t know him, I was killed as a toddler and at the same time as him, so I don’t have any memories. Dad showed me pictures of him, though, and he looks nice. I wish I did know him better.”
26: What are you craving right now?
“Peace and quiet. A partner. I dunno.”
27: Have you ever broken someone’s heart?
“I don’t know. I’m more likely to break my own half the time with how attached to things or people I get.”
28: Have you ever been cheated on?
“Hah, no.”
29: Have you made a boyfriend/girlfriend cry?
“At time of answering, I don’t have one, so no.”
30: What’s irritating you right now?
“Being so god damn cold. I have a sweater on and the heating on and my own Solar Light and I’m STILL COLD!”
31: Does somebody love you?
“My dad does. I don’t like speaking for anyone else I know, though.”
32: What is your favourite color?
“Largely any of the Io shaders. Blue’s good too, and green.”
33: Do you have trust issues?
“Depends who’s asking me to trust them. I trust my dad, Artemis and Dad with my life. Plus Othion and his husband Izel. Oh, and Vigil, since he guards the Speaker. Ikora, too. But the likes of the Drifter? It’s getting harder to say.”
“Long story short, sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn’t.”
34: Who/what was your last dream about?
“I dreamt of a throne world that belonged to Crota, and it was filled with warped versions of the plants in my garden. Everything was a sickly Hive green and there was a broken throne with vines snaking all around it. I was sat in it, and there were hordes of Hive knelt around me like I was royalty.... I think it’s just a scrambled memory, after getting that shard of Crota’s soul crystal in my eye.”
“Yeah, that’s all it was. Don’t think on it too much, Edix.”
35: Who was the last person you cried in front of?
“My Ghost. It feels weird to be crying around anyone else sometimes.”
36: Do you give out second chances too easily?
“Yes. Sometimes I’m too kind for my own good.”
37: Is it easier to forgive or forget?
“I think it’s easier to forgive. That way you can move past it and carry on, rather than forgetting about it and then it coming back to haunt you at inopportune times.”
38: Is this year the best year of your life?
“I doubt it. Cayde died, Dad and Ikora have been arguing, the Drifter moved into the Tower Annex, the Black Armory opened its shady doors, the Spider is very interested in even more shady things, the Nine have rocked up with their Emissary and even with Mara gone, she’s up to no good as usual and I don’t like it.”
39: How old were you when you had your first kiss?
“In mortal terms, around 24 or 25? As a Guardian, no idea. I don’t count the years so much.”
40: Have you ever walked outside completely naked?
“Oh my god no. I’d rather die than do that.”
51: Favourite food?
“Not sure I have one, to be honest with you.”
52: Do you believe everything happens for a reason?
“Sometimes. Not everything can be attributed to that logic, given the nature of this bastard existence some things are just at random and have no or little reason to them.”
53: What is the last thing you did before you went to bed last night?
“Worked on some more jellyfish to give to families in the City. They lost more than we did during the Red War, so I try to give something nice back to them when I can.”
54: Is cheating ever okay?
“No. If you can’t do it on your own merit, then you don’t deserve to reap the rewards through cheating.”
55: Are you mean?
“I can be, but I don’t like to.”
56: How many people have you fist fought?
“Not that many. I’m not all that strong, physically.”
57: Do you believe in true love?
“I’d like to, but sometimes it just doesn’t seem possible.”
58: Favourite weather?
“When it’s raining on an autumn day, because at least I’m not too cold. But also I can just sit by the window, wrapped up in blankets and listen to the rain while I crochet or read.”
59: Do you like the snow?
“Yes! It’s so much fun to roll around in it and throw snowballs at other Guardians!”
60: Do you wanna get married?
“I don’t think so. It’s bold to assume a relationship would last that long.”
61: Is it cute when a boy/girl calls you baby?
“Depends who’s calling me that and the circumstance of the name. If they’re taking the piss, and I don’t know them, then I’m not happy about it.”
62: What makes you happy?
“Little things. Looking after my plants, helping Asher, my crochet projects, being able to spend time with my friends.”
63: Would you change your name?
“No. I like it how it is.”
64: Would it be hard to kiss the last person you kissed?
“Probably, since I don’t know who they were, their name or what they looked like. I was... very drunk.”
65: Your best friend of the opposite sex likes you, what do you do?
“Well that’s literally never gonna happen, so I’m not even engaging in this hypothetical.”
66: Do you have a friend of the opposite sex who you can act your complete self around?
“Yes. Artemis is very dear to me and we have an understanding of one another. Even with our differences, I still feel comfortable around her.”
67: Who was the last person of the opposite sex you talked to?
“Artemis, duh. Well, maybe Ikora.”
68: Who’s the last person you had a deep conversation with?
“Probably Artie again. We talk about the Hive a lot, given our dispositions.”
69: Do you believe in soulmates?
“I’d like to, just not in my own case.”
70: Is there anyone you would die for?
“My dad, Artemis. I’d die for Asher and, in fact, have. Many times. Curse you, Pyramidion.”

Aidan Gillen may not have a face you instantly recognise, but he can change remarkably for each character he plays. It's better like that, he tells Kate Holmquist.
He doesn't stop moving in the hotel armchair. He pulls his black Adidas jacket up over his ears as though he's hiding. Then pulls it down and tries to sit still, but then his hands are in his hair constantly, pulling it, bending it, working it like clay, until eventually it stands straight up, like the black comb of an exotic bird.
I keep looking for characters in Aidan Gillen's malleable face: for the seductively amoral Stuart in Queer As Folk, for councilman Tommy Carcetti in The Wire, for Edward in Frank McGuinness's play, Someone to Watch Over Me or Mick in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker, for which Gillen was nominated for a Tony award after a New York Times review said he had outshone his co-actors, Kyle McLachlan and Patrick Stewart, not because they were inadequate - they were great - but because Gillen's energy was amazing.
Still dancing in his chair, Gillen leans on the marble shelf beside him, looks into the mirror and seems to watch the room behind him more than himself, with that shock of black hair sticking up like it's electrified. I'm distracted towards the mirror in an attempt to see what he's seeing and when I turn back, I realise he's been watching me watching him.
"You're a shape-shifter, aren't you? You can totally change your appearance at will," I suggest.
He smiles, settling into his chair. "Yea, I guess so." I've got his attention.
"You like that, don't you? Being described as a shape-shifter?"
"You are living through other people's stories. This is your life. Some of your most intense moments in your life are while you are pretending to be someone else. Hopefully, you have some sort of life that's your own, but it's all the same thing, really."
"Do you know who you are?" I ask him.
"I have an idea. Working as an actor . . . You are getting deep into being somebody else and that becomes a large part of your personality. Then you could be somebody else again next week," he says.
He has deliberately avoided being type-cast. "If something works you get asked to do four or five things the same. I've made an effort for the next job always to be something different."
Before Christmas, Gillen finished shooting a nightmarish thriller in Barcelona with 29-year-old director Rigoberto Casteneda, Black Out. He plays "an Alpha male doctor with a dual life", who becomes trapped in a lift with two other characters, played by Amber Tamblyn and Arnie Hammer. The film's tagline is "hope is not on the way".
GILLEN HAS MADE nearly 30 films and has appeared in dozens of theatre productions, but hasn't registered on the romantic lead radar like previous Irish heart-throbs Gabriel Byrne, Aidan Quinn and Colin Farrell. In looks, he's most like Farrell, with a bit of Stephen Rea and Richard Dreyfus thrown in, but without Farrell's charismatic public persona. Gillen is a light-switch, turning various qualities of energy on and off - sometimes within the space of a minute. And unlike Farrell, Gillen's face can be so ordinary that you'd miss him in a crowd. Now aged 38 and with 20 years of professional acting behind him, Gillen says he's aware at being just the right age to start leading in the sort of Hollywood films that could take him from highly respected working actor to mega-stardom.
He's so hard to pin down, he doesn't even identify with being an "Irish" actor. "In New York, they think I'm English, and in England they think that I'm from Ireland. If people don't have a strong sense of where you are from, it's to your advantage. I've never tried to push any kind of image. I feel at home in a situation where nobody knows who you are and what you do. I prefer not being recognisable in the street, the less people think they know about you the better. What do they want to know about you for, anyway?" he asks.
The son of an architect, who died last year, and a nurse, Gillen grew up in Drumcondra and was an altar boy in Gardiner Street church. At 14, he became involved in the National Youth Theatre but he didn't see it as a career. By Leaving Cert year, he'd fallen foul of the Christian Brothers. "A month before the Leaving Cert, a teacher sent me out of the classroom and I lay down on the roof of the building and decided it was time to move on. I liked school, but I didn't want to do any more of it," he says.
Gillen's "university" education began with a year living in London "watching the video of every film ever made". Then in 1988 he was cast in Billy Roche's Handful of Stars and met Jenny Tupper, who ran the Bush Theatre. "I lived with her for two and a half years. She was very supportive and encouraging." There was no sexual intimacy between them but Gillen says he got slagged for being her "toy boy", which he wasn't. "There was always a glass of Friexnet and a cup of quails' eggs and stimulating company of theatre people - Simon Callow, Alan Rickman, Frank McGuinness, Cathy Bourke, Lindsay Duncan. Always stuff going on. One time I was dying in bed with chicken pox, which I got at the rather old age of 21, and I woke up to find Frances Barber spoon-feeding me coconut ice-cream, which was almost like a fever dream. It was nice to have somewhere to be where I could talk to people, instead of an empty room on my own."
The actor he most admires is Donal McCann and the Irish playwright he would most like to work with is Conor McPherson - and McGuinness again, if the opportunity arose. As for Irish film-makers, he can't name one up-and-coming director he'd like to see cast him, which probably says something about the state of the Irish film industry.
GILLEN IS IN Dublin to play Teach in David Mamet's American Buffalo at the Gate. "What interests me most is the simple and straightforward plot: three small-time hustlers, hungry people, attempting to execute a rare coin heist and their efforts to keep on top as it falls apart. But behind that there's the background of the consumer capitalist society that they believe in and are existing on the margins of, and sometimes their efforts are desperate and desperately funny. They're treating each other like junkyard dogs, yet they are human. They're like a family. I think the play's got a heart even if the background is pretty black . . . Living is pretty black."
For the past three years, working on The Wire, he has fallen a little in love with the city it portrays, Baltimore - which likes to call itself "charm city" even though it's an east-coast backwater with a murder rate that's one of the highest in the US. Baltimore has been celebrated by novelist Anne Tyler and film-makers Barry Levinson and John Waters, but for the US public it is journalist David Simon who has explored the "rotten core" of this city, through drama series based on his non-fiction books that read like thrillers. Simon's first venture was Homocide: Life on the Streets, followed by The Corner and now, The Wire, which is about to film its fifth and final season.
Gillen has a real affection for The Wire, which Newsday called "the greatest dramatic series ever produced for television". He speaks passionately about the series' concerns, particularly how the education system is failing boys who have to decide whether to make something of themselves through education or join "the life" of street crime. One of the main characters is a cop turned teacher who becomes personally involved in his students' lives.
I tell him that my mother was a teacher in an all-black school in Baltimore; she kept a mattress for her eight-year-olds to sleep on and gave them money to buy lunch, since they stayed up all night with mothers on drugs and needed sleep and food more than education. He's fascinated to hear that people were trying to save these kids 40 years ago, but says: "I think there's a feeling that things are turning round in Baltimore."
Once we make the Baltimore connection, Gillen becomes himself and starts naming places he's become attached to as he kills time during breaks in filming: the Charles Cinema, which plays every arthouse film on the planet, and the Charles Club, a louche bar recently redesigned by the same designer who has worked on Barry Levinson's films. I tell him I got my European cinema education, for what it's worth, in the Charles Cinema and ask him if he's been to the Block, a porn district so risque in a 1950s kind of way that it's like a time warp. He instantly responds: "The Block. And it's right there in the middle of everything, by city hall!"
Blaze Starr, a stripper whose spinning neon pasties are one of my enduring childhood memories, was practically patron saint of the city when I was growing up there. He's fascinated by this bit of Baltimore porn history. Then we exchange John Waters anecdotes and he tells me that, in Fell's Point, the nutty little shop where Divine held court still exists. The Poles still take pride in their blonde beehives and now call themselves "Huns", he says. "When I get back to Baltimore, I kind of feel, you know, 'home'."
The cast and crew of The Wire can be "a bit cliquish" and Gillen likes his own company, though every weekend he can he flies back to London to see his two young children. As we say goodbye on the street, he vows that he will get a mention of Blaze Starr into The Wire. I watch him pull the collar of his chunky sheepskin suede jacket up around his ears, pat down his hair to make himself innocuous, and disappear into a city where only his old friends recognise him.
American Buffalo previews at the Gate Theatre from Feb 8 and opens Feb 13

Clem - Character Interrogation
1 How old is your character?
17
2 What's their relationship with their parents? (if their parents are dead then detail the story and their past relationship if you can find it) (if they have a different back story again, then enter that here)
Didn’t know her parents. She was left on the Library stairs as a child, and raised by the Head Librarian (Edwin) – an older, unmarried gentleman that had dedicated his life to the upkeep of the cities many magical and historical texts. Their relationship is very close, as Clem was never around children her own age, making Edwin the only other person she was social with.
3 Who raised them (ignore if listed in 2)
Head Librarian, Edwin (last name?)
4 Do they have any siblings? - If so, describe them and their relationship(s)
No
5 Are there any significant social interactions or events in the past that influence their character? - if more than one then list them here.
Not having any younger children around during her developmental years, Clem often used the books in the library as a means to escape. She finds it difficult to interact with other people because of this, preferring instead to read or play with imaginary friends.
6 Is your character married, or have they been married?
No
7 Does your character have relationships – (if not romantic, then friends) - describe them, and how they view their friends and how their friends view them
Just with Edwin, which she sees as a father figure. But she does become friends with the team of adventuring misfits, each of which helps her to overcome her problems in a unique way. Stag Beetle (I don’t have names for any of them yet) helps her to feel more confident physically, Ornithoptera Priamus (I really need to give her a name) helps her with her self-confidence/image, and Miller Bee helps with her leadership skills/ability to take charge of a situation.
8 If a social class exists in their world, to which one do they belong?
Middle-Lower Class, being an orphan, but also serving the crown.
9 Does your character have children?
No
10 Is your character religious, or do they have a mentor, someone they put on a pedestal, or do they take advice from someone (examples)
Advice comes from Edwin, whose Clem’s primary parental figure. During her travels she learns more from the adventure gang. She’s not particularly religious, but she has a soft spot for ancient myths and legends/folk tales.
11 How has your character’s upbringing shaped their view of the world?
Being raised within the confines of the library, the only link to the outside world Clem had, was historical texts. These were all written from her people’s point of view, so problems arise when she discovers that history written from the perspective of the victors isn’t always 100% accurate. Particularly stories about the spider people, the main ‘bad-guys’ of this story, are skewed to portray them negatively – which intern warps Clem’s perception of them.
12 Does your character have chosen accessories / clothing / tools / weapons
A long coat, turtle neck, leather boots and mittens. The clothing’s designed to show how shy and reserved Clem is as a character. I’m playing with the idea of giving her a satchel or backpack, but that’s going to be difficult with the wings.
13 Does your character have preferred other things, food, vehicle, place? - list and describe
A warm fire, a good book. She likes hot drinks and comfortable clothes.
14 Does your character have any notable enemies?
Miller Bee takes a while to warm up to her, his character is openly cynical of Clem and her flaws. He does eventually come around though. Other than that, there’s Vinerva the Spider Queen, whose more of an overarching/end game villain.
15 What does your character struggle with?
Trusting herself. She’s very out of her depth, traveling with experienced adventurers, and feels self-conscious as a result. Interacting with others is daunting, but the more time she spends out in the real world, meeting new people and having new experiences, the better she gets at it.
16 Describe your character’s world
Naturalistic Fantasy world, where characters share traits with a unique kind of insect. Clem specifically is based on a cecropia moth, and her color pallet will reflect this.  There’s different domains for different insect species – for instance, the spider people live in a place called The Undergrowth, which is a gloomy place full of mulching leaves and mosey rock.
17 Has your character ever crossed anyone?
No
18 What are your character’s goals in life?
Originally, to assume the position of Head Librarian, but after traveling with her new found friends, her goals shift to wanting to explore the world and write her own accounts of the different places and people she meets.
19 Does your character have a dark memory from childhood or the past?
Probably being shunned/excluded by any other children she rarely encountered.
20 How would a perfect world look to your character?
In the beginning, a world where everything is black and white and easy to sum up on a few pieces of paper. After she sees the world for what it is, she wouldn’t want to change anything.
21 What does your character fear losing the most?
Her home and Edwin. She’s afraid that if she doesn’t return The Book of Light, that Moth Queen Lucella will banish her, and she’ll lose both forever.
22 Is your character afraid to be alone?
Deep down yes. She’s been alone for the majority of her life, though she’s always wanted a friend/group of friends. The more she gets close to the adventurers she travels with, the more worried she is that she’ll lose them/ruin the friendship.
23 What would we first notice about your character if we met them?
Short, soft spoken, timid, intelligent. Also, moth.
24 Is your character a loner or gregarious – or something more complicated (if so, describe)
Very much a loner, Clem has a naturally shy personality type, and with a lack of children her age to interact with, she’s a bit emotionally stunted.
25 What are your character’s physical attributes?
She’s 5’6 with white hair and striking russet eyes. She wears a large coat and black turtle neck, tan boots and mittens. Her coat has slits in the back for her wings, which a based on the same pattern as a cecropia moth.
26 What is your character’s star sign?
Capricorn
27 What is your character’s gender?
Female
28 What is your character's occupation/previous occupations?
Apprentice to the Head Librarian
29 Is your character well mannered?
Yes, she’s very careful about being presentable and tidy.
30 What hobbies has your character undertaken over their lifetime?
Writing and reading. She experimented with journal keeping at one point, but abandoned it when she became disheartened by her repetitive life style. However, she picks it back up again when she starts adventuring.
31 What is your character’s personality type?
INFP
32 What would your character say their worst quality is?
Their introverted-ness

What Does the Quran Say about Protecting the Environment?
Tumblr media
Although it really shouldn't be, climate change has become one of the most contentious subjects of the past decade. Despite ample evidence pointing to its legitimacy, countless people deny it is a threat, with some even brushing off its existence entirely. We have even seen politicians - people who are supposed to devote their lives to the betterment of the planet and its inhabitants - labeling climate change a "hoax". This is often done in an attempt to justify business deals which will have a negative impact on the environment.
Make no mistake about it, climate change is a very real threat, one which the majority of humanity is only waking up to. However, the danger of global warming has been discussed as far back as 1500 years ago. Our devoted Muslim readers will not be surprised to learn that some of the earliest mentions of climate change and the importance of protecting the environment can be found in the Quran. We will be discussing the Quran's most noteworthy references to climate change and our duty to prevent it in this article.
Ozone Depletion
One of the most commonly cited examples of the Quran discussing man's potential to negatively impact the planet reads:
"And We made the sky a protected ceiling, but they, from its signs, are turning away."
-Quran, 21:32
For the eco-minded Muslim - or even anybody who considers themselves a friend to the environment - this can be seen as a prediction of humanity's damage to the atmosphere. We know that the ozone layer is crucial to the survival of not just the human race, but of all life on this planet. It acts as a barrier between our atmosphere and the harmful ultraviolet radiation produced by the sun. Without it, the DNA of all life on Earth would be warped beyond recognition. Plants would die, leaving us with no food. This would be swiftly followed by the deaths of almost all animals, most likely starting with the herbivores and quickly followed by the carnivores who feast on them. Human beings would not be far behind, with starvation wiping out much of our species. Those of us who manage to survive long enough would likely succumb to skin cancer as a result of the unobstructed rays of the sun beaming down upon the Earth.
With the above in mind, it is no major jump to say that the ozone layer is the "protected ceiling" referenced in the aforementioned Quran verse. When we look at the damage we have caused to the ozone layer, especially in the past 100 to 200 years, it is similarly reasonable to say that mankind is "turning away" from it. Thankfully, it seems that the human race has finally started to heed the warnings of the Quran, whether we realize it or not. Be it out of a sense of religious obligation or merely a desire to create a better world for future generations, mankind has been making a concentrated effort to repair the damage caused to the ozone layer. Over the past 30 years, more than 98% of ozone-damaging substances have been eradicated from use. This has caused the hole to shrink to its lowest size since the late 1980s. Interestingly, it was around this time that Islam finally started to firmly establish itself in the Western world.
Water Conservation
Over the past couple of years, the importance of conserving water has been somewhat overlooked in favor of additional acts that may benefit the environment. However, water conservation remains an important issue. It may, in fact, be an eternal issue. This may well be the reason we find a number of passages in the Quran detailing the importance of not being wasteful when it comes to water. In the surah Al-Araaf (The Heights), one can expect to find the following verse:
"O Children of Adam! Look to your adornment at every place of worship, and eat and drink, but be not prodigal. Lo! He loveth not the prodigals."
-Quran, 7:31
In the above passage, the word "prodigals" is generally taken to mean people who eat or drink to excess, or who are wasteful with their food and water. But why exactly is the Quran concerned with enjoying water in moderation and not being frivolous with one's water supply? Some say the answer to that question can be found in an additional Quran verse, which reads:
"And We send down from the sky water in measure, and We give it lodging in the earth, and lo! We are able to withdraw it."
-Quran, 23:18
The passage immediately following Quran, 23:18 goes on to say:
"Then We produce for you therewith gardens of date-palms and grapes, wherein is much fruit for you and whereof ye eat."
-Quran, 23:19
When looked at separately, both of the above passages paint a clear picture of the importance of water conservation. When taken as a whole, however, they give us a robust and comprehensive understanding of why Allah encourages reasonable use of water. In Islamic belief, not only is water sent down from the Heavens by order of Allah, but it is sent down for the sole purpose of sustaining life on Earth. As detailed in Quran, 23:19, the water we receive is intended to facilitate the growth of fruit and vegetables, providing nourishment for mankind and animals alike. When water is used carelessly or unreasonably, there is less to go around. This means the plants and animals who rely on it for life may have to go without it so a human being can wash their car or leave the tap running while they brush their teeth.
The Quran's teachings on water conservation complement contemporary secular knowledge of the subject. For example, we now know that although 70% of the Earth is made up of water, much of that water is undrinkable or otherwise unusable. In fact, only 0.03% of accessible water is freshwater. This is a staggeringly low number and goes to prove our earlier point that water conservation is still very much an issue we should be concerned about. By being mindful of the Quran's passages on the importance of conserving water, and by following some modern tips on how to do so, Muslims and non-Muslims alike can ensure a continued supply of freshwater for future generations.
Save The Trees
The chances are you're familiar with the old comedic trope of a "hippy" tying themselves to a tree in order to prevent some land developer from tearing it down. While such situations are undeniably ripe for satire, these so-called "tree huggers" are performing a deed commended by the Quran, although they may not be aware of it. In the Quran, Allah talks at length about the extreme care that was put into crafting the plants and trees that play such a crucial role in our environment and survival. One example of this can be found in surah Al-An'am (The Cattle). In this surah, Allah declares the following:
"He it is Who sendeth down water from the sky, and therewith We bring forth buds of every kind; We bring forth the green blade from which We bring forth the thick-clustered grain; and from the date-palm, from the pollen thereof, spring pendant bunches; and (We bring forth) gardens of grapes, and the olive and the pomegranate, alike and unlike. Look upon the fruit thereof, when they bear fruit, and upon its ripening. Lo! herein verily are portents for a people who believe."
-Quran, 6:100
While it is certainly one of the longer verses of the holy book, Quran, 6:100 provides a valuable insight into some of the primary purposes of trees and plants. Once they have been brought forth by the rain - another example of the importance of water - our trees and plants produce a great many types of fruit and vegetables to ensure the survival of all the creatures of the Earth. Allah even takes the time to make mention of pollen, which ensures the survival of bees. Although presumably not known at the time the Quran was sent forth, bees play a crucial role in our delicate ecosystem. Without them, we would see a drastic decrease in the number of seeds maturing into plants. We would also see the decline - and eventual extinction - of the many animals who rely on bees as prey. This would trigger a reaction throughout the food chain which would culminate in the destruction of the human race. With this in mind, we can easily understand why Allah saw the need to place trees and vegetation upon the Earth and why we, as the planet's dominant species, have an obligation to care for it.
Accept Responsibility
As mentioned at the end of the previous section, as the dominant species on the planet, human beings have an obligation to maintain it and ensure all life on Earth continues to thrive. For some reason, this is an idea many people have trouble with. Form big-game hunters to billionaires in the oil industry, a worrying number of human beings seem to be operating with a "them versus us" mentality. They justify causing damage to the Earth and other creatures on it by telling themselves and anybody who will listen that if they didn't behave in such a manner the planet would somehow cause harm to them. Ironically, it is harming the planet which leads to harmful reactions, such as ozone depletion and global warming. On the other end of the spectrum, we have those who do not consciously commit any misdeeds against the planet or its inhabitants. However, they continue to waste water and use plastic straws and purchase cosmetics from companies which test on animals, along with any number of other subtly damaging acts. The large distance between such people and the consequences of their decisions allows them to ignore the negative impact their actions are having on the planet. However, the Quran clearly states that everybody, regardless of their intentions, must accept responsibility for any damage they cause to the environment, however small. This is never more evident than it is in surah Ar-Rum (The Romans). The forty-first verse of the surah reads as follows:
"Corruption doth appear on land and sea because of (the evil) which men's hands have done, that He may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return."
-Quran, 30:41
Given the name of the thirtieth surah, many are quick to brush the above passage off as a reference to the Romans and the many misdeeds which they committed during their time as the world's premier civilization. More broadly, however, it can be seen as a condemnation of the human race as a whole. Our hands have caused damage to virtually every other living thing on Earth for our own advancement and, in some particularly depraved cases, our own entertainment. Of course, as the above passage points out, our actions have consequences. Through things such as ozone depletion and smog we have been forced to "taste a part of that which we have done". Thankfully, these repercussions have left us with little option but to acknowledge the error of our ways and accept responsibility for our actions. Over the past couple of decades, we have recognized and embraced our obligation to care for the planet through movements such as the United Nations and the Paris Agreement. These, along with countless other climate change initiatives introduced in recent decades, have allowed us to right the wrongs we have committed as a species "in order that we may return".

AMAAD Institute offers sense of community to LGBT people
ByRhodesia Muhammad and Bryan 3X Crawford,Contributing Writers @TheFinalCall
“Ya basta!” Estela Reyes-Lopez pleaded, which means “enough” in English.
“Twenty lives were taken from us because of some young man filled with so much hate, so much ignorance, so much hostility toward people he doesn’t even know,” said Ms. Lopez, the media and public information officer for Centro De Salud Familiar La Fe, the center for faith and family health, a non-profit social justice organization based in El Paso.
It was a hail of bullets that sent families who were back to school shopping, screaming and running for their lives, when a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, around 10 a.m. Aug. 3, killing at least 22 people and wounding more than two dozen.
According to authorities, Patrick Crusius, the 21-year-old White male identified as the shooter, drove nearly 10 hours from his hometown of Allen, Texas, about 30 miles north of Dallas, to carry out an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime against the Hispanic community. Mr. Crusius surrendered to police shortly after his reign of terror, leaving many baffled as to why he didn’t take his own life like many mass shooting suspects.
A manifesto apparently posted on social media by Mr. Crusius outlined his intentions and his racist and anti-immigration views, said authorities. Perhaps he surrendered that he wanted to be heard.
Just 12 hours later, another gunman opened fire in a crowded bar in Dayton, Ohio, early Sunday morning, on Aug. 4. Connor Betts, 24, killed nine people, including his own 22-year-old sister, in less than a minute, authorities reported. Thirty-one other people were reported injured. The suspect was eventually shot and killed by police. Authorities are saying the two shootings are not linked.
During an Aug. 5 press conference, President Trump said the nation must condemn racism, bigotry, and White supremacy. “These sinister ideologies must be defeated,” he added. “Hate has no place in America. Hatred warps the mind, ravages the heart and devours the soul.”
Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said the shootings were clearly, at least in part, a result of Mr. Trump’s divisive, racist rhetoric and condemned the president’s proposed legislative fix for strong background checks for gun users and tougher immigration laws. Many questioned why Mr. Trump connected the two issues, especially since the shooting suspects are U.S. citizens.
Many social media users’ disdain for the U.S. government, including the president for hesitancy and refusal to call these mass shootings what they really are hate crimes and domestic terror.
Student Minister Abel Muhammad, Latino representative of the Nation of Islam, said, “President Trump’s rhetoric has emboldened and lit fire to many extremist groups. There is a hesitancy and a slowness in labeling this in what seems to be apparent to every one of us. So many of our Black and Brown brothers and sisters are being killed for far less. Yet, somehow these extremists who take the life of our people somehow always makes it safely to be arrested without incidence. But our people unarmed can’t seem to make it out of a traffic stop.”
“It’s absolutely a sign of the times as the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan has been warning the American people for years now, that the injustices within the country create an imbalance and if not addressed the results of ignoring and not trying to create a remedy would be acted out in acts of violence. We see that coming into existence more and more as the times are getting darker,” Student Minister Muhammad said.
“After a tragedy like this, there is a time to be sad and there’s a time to mourn. But this situation that we are living right now in our community, this has been building for a long time,” said Ms. Reyes-Lopez, who shops at that same El Paso Walmart with her family. “These clouds have been circling. This thunder has been building and this lightening have struck. And we’re very angry about it. Many of the people I’ve spoken to in the last 24 hours have told me, friends, activists, people that have had their feet on the ground for a long time, said, we are talking about voting, we’re talking about legislation, and gun control.”
These mass shootings are happening more often. On February 14, 2018, 17 people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a high school in Parkland, Florida. On May 18, 2018, 10 people were killed at a high school in Santa Fe, Texas. On November 5, 2017, 25 people were killed at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. On October 1, 2017, 58 people were killed when a mass shooter opened fire from a hotel room at the Harvest Music Festival, at a Las Vegas strip in Nevada. On June 12, 2016, 49 people were killed at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
On June 17, 2015, 9 people were killed at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
Dr. Abdul Haleem Muhammad, southwest regional student minister of the Nation of Islam in Houston said, God loved us so much, he set up a military structure and security apparatus for his servants, the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad and Minister Farrakhan, and the Nation of Islam in anticipation of the current dark days. “If we love our people as much as Allah (God) loves us, we will be found teaching and training our people to make our neighborhoods and institutions safe places to live, work, play, learn, and pray. Offering thoughts and prayers or finger pointing is not sufficient today,” Dr. Haleem Muhammad stressed. “Love is a verb. We must show and prove the unequaled wisdom Allah has taught us through his Christ and Messiah.”
Student Minister Abel Muhammad agreed that this is not the time for finger pointing. “This is what has angered me, the response has been politicized, where Democrats are pointing at Republicans now trying to win the Latino votes by saying, ‘oh look what they’ve done, they’ve allowed this to happen because of their gun laws’ when for eight years the Democrats had charge of the Congress and the presidential office and they were not able to fix anything in terms of immigration or in terms of those things which ill-affect our people.”
Dee Woo, operations manager of KTEP FM, El Paso, a public radio station, commended the residents of El Paso for being a strong community that bands together in times of need. She believes parents are the root of the hatred that leads to mass shootings. “Parents need to stop teaching racism and hatred at home. And, they need to address it with their children as early as two and three years old, because as we’ve seen, children will play with other children because they want to play with other children and for no other reason but to have fun. And it doesn’t matter who it is or the color of their skin. So, stop teaching the children racism and prejudice and instead start teaching them universal love, which is respect for one another and being able to help one another,” she told The Final Call.
Others say separation is the only solution. That there are already two Americas, one White and one non-White.
Jay Hernandez, a resident of El Paso, noted, “Some in the Latino community in El Paso may have been injured but didn’t seek treatment because of their lack of citizenship and I think that’s hurtful and disgraceful. This is America, yet we don’t have the freedom to shop for school supplies for our children.”
“I think it’s a wakeup call,” added Student Minister Abel Muhammad. “I hope ultimately, the only good that can come of this is that perhaps our people will awaken to the fact that these people do not see us as their brothers, they do not see us as their equals. They have no desire for truth, or fairness, or equity or justice with us if they’re not in a position of superiority, not based on truth or goodness, but simply on their Whiteness and we as subordinate and subservient to them. They don’t even want us alive in their presence. Hopefully, as harsh as that may be, I think it’s waking up people to understand and to look at what is it that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan are offering, which is the best and only solution, separation from these people.”
There has been an average of one mass shooting every 12 days in 2019, with the total so far being 18.
All told, as many as 102 people have been killed this year in mass shootings, with many of them being committed by White men; all of whom adhere to and embrace the ideology of White nationalism.
Compounding the issue is the reluctance to paint these men as what they are: domestic terrorists.
The emergence of Donald Trump on the political scene in America has brought feelings of White pride mixed with concern about Whites acting out in public spaces every day. Videos capture White men and women berating, harassing, insulting and even calling the police on Blacks and other non-White people. Social media is flooded with clips showing the differences in the way law enforcement treats White perpetrators of crime, versus treatment of non-White people who don’t have to be committing a crime to be forcibly attacked—or even killed at the hands of police officers.
All of this could, and should, be very easily categorized as acts of terrorism. But in a society where the thought appears to be only Muslims can be terrorists, White domestic terrorism gets softened to “mental illness.”
“No one is safe. And the days of thinking something like this can never happen to me are pretty much over,” political commentator and activist Mark Thompson, told The Final Call. “[White people’s] fear of genetic annihilation, as Dr. Frances Cress Welsing described it, is enabled by Donald Trump. He can dismiss these mass shootings as mental illness. But White supremacy is a mental illness. To believe that you are a superior race that is supposed to be separate and distinct above every other race, is a form of mental illness.”
“In America, the dangerous are seen as endangered,” Ibram X. Kendi, director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University, wrote in an op-ed for The Atlantic. “Leaders treat white-nationalist terror, not as a broad social ill, but as a fringe problem that will become extinct on its own. To portray white terrorism as an outlier is to ignore America’s entire racial history, not to mention its present.”
Technology and media are part of the phenomenon with White terrorists able to amplify their views through mainstream and social media. And on these platforms, the idea that only Black and Brown people are dangerous can spread like wildfire.
An FBI bulletin disseminated through the agency’s office in Phoenix, Arizona, found conspiracy theories, like people from South America are invading the United States, can contribute to domestic terrorist threats.
“The FBI assesses these conspiracy theories very likely will emerge, spread, and evolve in the modern information marketplace, occasionally driving both groups and individual extremists to carry out criminal or violent acts,” the memo read in part.
“White folks are upholding a slavery amendment—the 2nd Amendment—that was meant to use violence to keep Black and Brown folks in check. But the 2nd Amendment is now being used in the killing of White folks themselves,” Mr. Thompson explained, adding, “Firearms are an instrument of White supremacy and the enforcement of racist oppression.”
In May, testifying before the House Homeland Security Committee, officials from the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and the Justice Department, that there are more than 850 open cases of domestic terrorism in the United States; 40 percent of them have involved racially motivated violence. However, there is no law on the books in America against domestic terrorism. Perpetrators of these crimes, who are labeled as homegrown terrorists, are often prosecuted using other statutes. This makes it extremely difficult to even prosecute someone as a domestic terrorist in this country.
Thus, charges can be left to the whims of prosecutors dealing with those who commit acts of extreme violence.
After the most recent tragedies, the possibility of making mass shootings, which authorities describe as shootings with four or more victims, capital crimes was raised.

Find out about Atumu
Tumblr media
Under the cut is the answer to 60 fun questions about Atumu. All the answers to the questions you never had.
1: What’s your OCs favorite color?
I don’t think he has a favourite colour, but lately he’s been a fan of the colour blue.
2: Where does your OC work?
As a vagrant, he doesn’t really have a place of work? He’s got plenty of skills, so he can generally fit in about anywhere. However, he doesn’t have any formal schooling or official documentation of qualifications, so like...work is typically hard to get for him. He often finds himself doing either housework or farmwork for room and board.
3: What’s your OCs favorite food?
Oh gosh, all of these questions are so hard for Atumu. He...uh... he has a very bad relationship with food. So It’s hard to say that he has any favourite food? Pretty recently, he’s discovered frozen prepackaged foods like pizza rolls that have made him just about melt. But the only reason he was okay with eating it was because the family he was staying with referred to it as “not real food,” thus leading him to believe it’s not really comestible for the average person, and thus absolving him of the guilt of eating food that might otherwise feed others.
Alternatively, he is the only one who is physically capable of consuming the toxic, noxious waste that his brother cooks. I’m pretty sure he got food poisoning from that though. Either way, he’ll eat it without complaint and say??? believe?? it is good? Don’t know what’s going on in his head, but he’s been told and is convinced it’s good, even if it’s hazardous waste.
4: Does your OC prefer paper or plastic?
Tumblr media
5: How old is your OC?
Uhh.....old as balls. Several thousand years old? But he’s got really spotty memory, so he can usually only remember things in the past couple hundred years.
6: Does your OC have any supernatural powers?
UHHHHH!!! Basically everything about him? This will probs be answered in all the other questions.
7: Is your OC in a relationship?
No. [but I like to imagine he has a pretty cute non-canonical quasi-platonic friendship with a certain fellow water lover]
8: What are some of your OCs strengths?
Literally everything? He’s OP as fuck. One notable one that recurs is his cooking ability? He’s very, very, very, very good at cooking and what he cooks is not anything of this world. It’s very good.
9: What are some of your OCs weaknesses?
His...rationality? He has a hard time seeing anything in anyone else’s perspective and he has a pretty darn warped sense or reality, so a lot of his reasoning (though perfectly logical in his head) is tremendously vague and makes no sense to literally anyone else.
10: What is your OCs favorite outfit?
Clothes? That fit. And cover his body.
You’d be surprised how hard that is to come by for him.
Tumblr media
He’s a fan of formal wear. But in general he likes clothes that fit well and are comfortable.
Tumblr media
11: What animal does your OC relate to?
Idk if he personally relates to them, but I relate them to him. Otters. Moist boys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
12: Is your OC sexually active?
Yes, but not by choice.
13: What is your OCs earliest memory?
Oof, this is a hard one. He’s got that good ol’ spotty memory. I’m sure he gets flashbacks of his childhood as a slave. So if you’re counting when triggered, his earliest memories are probably from the dungeons when he was looking out for both Atamu and Atomu, fighting for survival.
14: Does your OC have a cell phone? If so, what kind?
OH BOY. HE SURE DOES NOT. [not that he’s never had a phone. But phones don’t usually last with this boy.]
15: What makes your OC angry?
It’s been a while since he’s been angry, but I guess it depends on the scenario. He is sometimes short on patience, especially when dealing with people who have harmed his family and are ignorant of the fact. He hates anyone who hurts his family.
16: When is your OCs favorite time of year?
Summer.
17: How long can your OC hold their breath?
Hours. Fucking hours. He’s a hard one to drown.
18: What kind of underwear does your OC wear?
DUDE. ANY. I think he’s usually freeballin’ - but legit. Any. None is also fine.
19: Does your OC prefer plaid or polka dots?
Probably plain? But plaid seems okay. He’s not a picky guy, and clothes that fit don’t come by very frequently.
20: What’s your OCs favorite kind of pizza?
pizza rolls
21: Who is your OCs best friend?
idk if best friend, but most important person in his life is his little brother and God, Atemu.
22: Has your OC ever killed someone?
Tumblr media
23: Whats your OCs biggest secret?
That’s a mystery to me too, my friend.
24: What does your OC smell like?
In all likelihood? Dirt.
25: What time of year does your OC prefer?
Didn’t I answer this already? He’s a warm summer day kind of boy. He’s used to the heat.
26: Is your OC a human or an animal? (or something else idk)
He’s....a human........ despite all signs to the contrary
27: What languages does your OC speak?
All of them. Literally all of them.
28: Does your OC like anime?
Tumblr media
29: Can your OC swim?
Ha ha ha! His element is literally water. He can swim nonstop for days. He’s fine in the water.
30: What does your OC choose to do about the, er, hair down there?
Tumblr media
31: Does your OC believe in fairies?
Doesn’t need to believe in them. He’s interacted with them.
32: Did your OC go to college? What did they major in?
He might have gone to college once or twice over the years? I think before all the bad shenanigans started, he did get a degree in Financing, I believe. But the documentation of all that stuff is long gone, so there’s nothing to formally say he was ever educated in any way. Anyhow, for Atumu, it’s not like he could gain much more imperical knowledge from additional schooling. He might be able to gain some social skills though? Haha, lord knows he needs that.
33: Are your OCs parents dead?
Hella dead. They been dead for thousands of years.
34: Is your OC religious?
Kind of? His brother is kind of...God.... But also there are a lot of canonical gods that also run the universe and beyond - but you don’t need to believe in them. They’re just. Around. He does believe his brother is his God though.
35: How flexible is your OC?
Tumblr media
36: What turns your OC on?
Tumblr media
37: What was your OCs first word?
gosh idk. I don’t think anyone was there to take note.
38: Does your OC have any pets?
Does his little brother count?
Tumblr media
39: Who is your OCs biggest enemy?
Not necessarily enemy but let’s see. Atamu is currently the self-declared mortal enemy? Just hates Tumu with a burning passion of a thousand suns. But the anger and hatred is unreciprocated. Yumi is his clone whose purpose was to kill and replace him.. originally. He’s since let that objective go, and they’re pretty good bros now. Real enemies/bad guys in the story might be the President (though he’s just hungry for knowledge and not necessarily evil... he’s just kind of evil). Governments in general seem to be the biggest enemy of Atumu and the gang, as they are the source of most of their woes.
40: What is the craziest thing your OC has done?
UM... WELL. Take a fucking pick.
He’s been strung to a helicopter by a rubber band. He’s been a lawyer against his own brother (my fave arc of his actually). He has gone through an entire junkyard trying to find the pieces of a Portuguese robot version of his brother. He’s been the mate of a nest of nagas. He’s been vivisected (oh boy yeah, forgot about that one). He’s been experimented on by multiple governments...multiple times. He’s made coconut ice cream (wild, I know).
He’s got lots of adventures, so take a fuckin pick, babes.
41: What is your OCs motto about life?
“How can I be of use?”
42: Does your OC drink coffee or tea?
He’ll drink whatever you give him, but he prefers water.
43: Who is your OCs biggest hero?
I don’t think he looks up to anyone (haha physically he can’t really - geddit - cuz he’s a giant).
44: What color eyes does your OC have?
Super green.
Tumblr media
45: Does your OC like reading?
Not sure if he likes it so much. He doesn’t really read for pleasure. He’s pretty well read though. Knows them encyclopaedias and dictionaries and science and math textbooks cover to cover. That good reading.
46: Is your OC loyal?
Would die for you. Has died for you already probably.
47: Does your OC tolerate violence?
Yeah.
48: What social class is your OC from?
He’s a slave... but like. He could’ve been king. He could’ve been God. Probably should’ve been God.
49: What country was your OC born in?
Egypt.
50: Does your OC cry easily?
Nah. Seldom if ever.
51: What is your OCs favorite genre of music?
He doesn’t know too much about music nowadays. But he’s pretty good with like. Instruments. That you can play. With your hands or mouth, you know. Doesn’t know much about synthesizers or electronic stuff or fancy cool effects.
52: How does your OC feel about insects?
He’s alright with them? They’re a good source of protein?
53: What is your OCs sexual orientation?
He’s sexually oriented away.
54: Does your OC smoke?
Used to? It’s been several hundred years, I feel like, since he’s had a smoke. But he’s not opposed to smoking. Just never really gets the chance.
55: What gender is your OC?
Male.
56: What kind of clothes does your OC wear?
He’ll wear anything he comes across. Anything you give him to wear. He doesn’t really know what’s “with the times” though. So even though he might feel embarrassed wearing some stuff, he’ll trust you if you tell him that it’s a normal thing for him to wear.
But given the choice, he likes really to wear loose fitting comfortable clothes cuz he doesn’t really have clothes his size. If he could get well fit formal clothes, he does like that.
57: Would you call your OC adventurous?
Dude, all he does is go on adventures. Idk if this means he’s brave or like? Willing to go on adventures? Nah, it’s just...he kind of has to. Some people choose adventure. Some have adventure thrust upon them. Atumu is the latter.
58: Is your OC introverted or extroverted?
He’s an ambivert? He won’t try too hard to put himself out there socially, esp because he’s pretty socially clueless. But also he doesn’t really have social anxiety at all, so if he’s not talking, it’s not because he’s shy or nervous. He’s just... there’s no reason he needs to approach you.
59: What is the first thing that someone would notice about your OC?
His height? His physique? And then probably his eyes - they’re hard not to notice.
60: Does your OC enjoy nature?
He sure spends a lot of time in it... spending months walking through deserts... weeks in tundras... some days in rain forests...
Lastly: in Arabic - اتومو
