She did it as a favor for her husband, director John Farrow. This was Maureen O'Sullivan's first film in five years, since Tarzan's New York Adventure, after which she had concentrated on raising her family. Charles Laughton was cast as the villain. Leslie Fenton was announced as director but he was held up on Saigon so John Farrow took over. Jonathan Latimer was assigned to write the script and Ray Milland to star. ) The purchase price was a reported $45,000. (Fearing's earlier novel The Hospital (1939) had been a best seller. Paramount bought the rights to the novel before publication. Morgan's screen name later would become "Henry 'Harry' Morgan" and eventually Harry Morgan, to avoid confusion with the popular humorist of the same name. Noel Neill as Elevator Operator (uncredited).Lloyd Corrigan as Colonel Jefferson Randolph aka McKinley.Douglas Spencer as Bert Finch, a reporter.Luis Van Rooten as Edwin Orlin, a reporter.Janoth falls down the elevator shaft to his death. Janoth shoots Hagen and tries to escape in an elevator, but the car is stuck floors below (jammed there by Stroud earlier while evading the security men). Enraged, Hagen turns on Janoth and reveals that Janoth killed York and that he helped with the coverup. Hagen implores Janoth to clear him, but Janoth tells him only that he will provide him with the best possible legal defense. He confronts Janoth and Hagen and presents evidence that appears to point to Hagen as the killer. Stroud evades the dragnet by various maneuvers, finally hiding in the clock. Building security men sweep the building to find the wanted man. All exits from the building are sealed, and the building's occupants must leave by the main door, with the witnesses watching for the mystery man. Stroud slips away before the witness identifies him to the investigators, who now know that the mystery man is in the building but do not know his identity. Stroud tries to avoid the witnesses, but one of them sees and recognizes him as the mystery man. Asked to paint a portrait of the mystery man, she produces a modernist abstract of blobs and swirls. One is eccentric artist Louise Patterson, who created the painting that Stroud purchased. The witnesses are brought to the Janoth Building. He must also secretly conduct his own investigation to prove Janoth's guilt.Įventually York is identified by the Crimeways team and witnesses are found who saw her on the town with the mystery man. He reluctantly agrees to return to his job and lead the manhunt, to Georgette's disappointment.ĭuring the manhunt, Stroud must appear to lead the investigation diligently while also preventing the investigation from identifying him as the culprit. He discloses enough details for Stroud to know that the mystery man is Stroud himself. Janoth calls to rehire him in order to lead the effort to find the mystery man (without any mention of York). Stroud has since caught up with his wife and son in West Virginia and tells her that he has been fired, but leaves out his adventures with York. Janoth decides to use the resources of Crimeways to find the man instead of calling the police. However, Hagen convinces him that they can frame the man whom Janoth saw leaving York's apartment for the crime. Janoth goes to his assistant Hagen and tells him what happened, intending to surrender to the police and confess. Janoth assumes that York is cheating on him, leading to a quarrel in which he strikes York with the sundial, killing her. Janoth sees someone leaving but does not recognize Stroud in the dark. Stroud and York go to her apartment, but York sees Janoth arriving and Stroud leaves. Stroud spends the evening drinking with York, and he buys a painting and a sundial. When Stroud loses track of time and misses the train for West Virginia, Georgette angrily leaves without him. Stroud goes to a bar to drink and is distracted by the attentions of Janoth's glamorous mistress Pauline York, who proposes a blackmail plan against Janoth. His tyrannical boss Earl Janoth wants him to stay to pursue a missing-person story that Stroud has just cracked, but Stroud refuses and Janoth fires him. Thirty-six hours earlier, Stroud is eager to embark on a long-postponed honeymoon in Wheeling, West Virginia with his wife Georgette and son. The clock dominates the lobby of the Janoth Publications building in New York City, where Stroud works. George Stroud, editor-in-chief of Crimeways magazine, hides from building security inside the "big clock," which is the largest and most sophisticated clock ever built.

A charred body is found in the remains of a burnt-out warehouse, and Lazard and his team are given the macabre task of proving whether the man [was] murdered or simply the victim of unfortunate circumstance. [IMDb]

In looking into this unusual case, Dr da Silva (Zia Mohyeddin) uses a new scientific method and gets an unexpected result. And the vital clue to the mystery lies in the shape of a boiler-suit.

Glyn Houston guested as Harry Kingsley, Paula Byrne as Jane Kingsley, Dudley Foster as Ernest Malet, & Pauline Stroud as Liz Mason.

[For some reason IMDb lists this as “The Boiler Suite Shape” [sic] but all the newspaper schedules refer to it as “The Shape.” ]

Written by Roger East (aka Roger Burford), who had recently adapted a dozen Maigret stories for the BBC series (1960-63) (hi @mariocki old telly really always is incestuous, isn’t it?), he had been screen-writing since the 1920s and his credits include the scenario for the Carol Reed film Bank Holiday that brought Margaret Lockwood to national attention (just in case I wanted things to get any more incestuous, hi, me)

This was the first episode to feature Zia Mohyeddin’s character, Dr Hamavid da Silva, said to be “a post graduate from Ceylon [Sri Lanka]”.

Writing the word christmas

Christmas as a child was amazing id always be the first one up at 4am and open up all the presents downstairs id wake my brother up get him out of bed and drag him downstairs the presents from nan and Grandad were always great so many thins nan would buy us by bike being a very memorable one in gold and red a beautiful crimson red it was the best. But it took me years to actually ride it.

Reading the word Christmas

At school Santa would come and i saw him getting dressed one year and though why would he be getting dressed but a few years before that when i sat on his knee at dads work doos i really thought he was Santa for sure i loved it.

Putting up the Christmas decorations i loved it we had some lovely old ones which mum has since thrown away but they would hang on the wall and the tree and i loved doing all that thinking of it now why did i like it so much to get presents because they presents made me feel better about myself? Why the surprise of getting and or giving presents the foods everyone was happy and people gave me lots of things so why was i the most excited person i new i woke all up i like stuff is that why i buy so much now ? Because i like to gift myself all the time to feel that excitement come up within me yes the excitement i live off the excitement i see still now when i buy something i want to all the time, well its time to start being more realistic with what i buy do i need it do i have room for it and so on i jetty need bare essentials really hey.

The decorations in stroud when they’d all go up it was exciting to drive or walk in town they were the best town lights ever i thought at the time a big bell was one every year

All the food and family would come round when very young it would be auntie Pauline and uncle bill or alan and Marion but when uncle bill left auntie Pauline b=Christmas with them finished and it was great ants and uncles the old ones would come for Christmas with my nan and grandad they would stay there and then come over for lunch glades was the best but dont forget your please and thank you lol one year when i was 15 she tried on my Lycra pink legging it was so funny she was funny made everyone laugh.

Saying Christmas out loud

Now I don’t give a fuck about Christmas because you have to do so much as in cooking presents etc and so on and i dont like spending money well I haven’t like spending money but now its a new me and having money flow lol it all seems so much of an effect its like im done with it i dont even put up decorations anymore and only sometimes a tree

Its Christmas time world vision i think it was the song where that money people who were famous sang to save people in Africa and all Christmas songs it seems always made the time like slade in the 70s and so on Christmas songs

When I got older and was working in the hotel i have to work Christmas Day when the family were at home eating dinner with aunts i missed being at home.

There so much around this period it hard to right it all down but basically as a child i loved it and now i cant be bothered ive alway told the girls that Santa isnt real not sure if that’s was for best but they didn’t seem to mind.

Does this definition support me no it all a big hype why to spend money I don’t mind having the dinner and all and passing presents but thats enough hey thousands of dollars dont have to be spent. And i have a polarity with this word of having excitement come up for Christmas and now thought of do i have to comes up lol

Marrying a love for colour with the minimalism of Japanese architecture, and a muted Scandinavian palette sounds like an impossible brief, one that sends a client and designer around and around in a power struggle for creative control. But Vanessa Hawes pulls it off in her own Canberra home, demonstrating restraint in overt architectural flourishes, and electing to display a love of colour in furnishings and decorative flourishes instead. Electric blue Pierre Paulin lounge chairs pop in the lounge room while pink Gubi beetle chairs surround the dining table, and a Garden Valley lounge in muted green stretches through the living area.

The vibrant furniture and art contrasts the clean, modern lines of the new house. Working in close collaboration with her employer, architect Paul Tilse, the home was designed with a flexible and pragmatic floorplan, which Vanessa wanted to prioritise for her maturing family. Key to this was two separate living areas, and built-in banquette seating as a bit of an in-joke with her kids.

‘When we go out to restaurants we usually all fight over the banquette seating,’ she laughs. The answer? Build your own 5 metres of it!

Vanessa admits that being the client and also designer allowed her to take risks that may not have been possible in a typical project. She didn’t once have to compromise on her design principles, and was able to bring together a variety of textures and finishes together under one roof! With the absence of client input, she could experiment with nontraditional colour and pattern sequences happily. The result is a home Vanessa describes as encompassing the varied aspects of her personality, ‘pared back but still tactile and feminine’.

Parem as máquinas! 10 filmes sobre jornalismo para ver em tempos de crise

No ano passado Spotlight – Segredos Revelados foi indicado a seis categorias no Oscar, vencendo nas de Melhor Filme e Melhor Roteiro Original. A trama mostra a investigação feita por uma equipe do jornal The Boston Globe sobre os casos de abuso sexual e pedofilia cometidos por membros da arquidiocese católica de Boston. O longa mostra o papel estratégico da imprensa na divulgação dos casos e sua função social ao exercer pressão por justiça.

O pioneiro desse tipo de filme foi Última Hora (1931), dirigido por Lewis Milestone, que deu origem às chamadas screwball comedies (‘comédias malucas’, não convencionais, na qual se origina situações inesperadas), que se popularizaram na década de 30. Também foi ele quem iniciou a moda de transcorrer a ação nas redações de jornais, embora no seu caso o cenário principal seja a sala de imprensa de um tribunal. Trata-se de uma sátira à corrupção política e à ética jornalística é foi a primeira de três adaptações americanas para o cinema da peça de Ben Hecht e Charles MacArthur, sucesso em 1928. A segunda adaptação, intitulada Jejum de Amor (1940), foi dirigida por Howard Hawks e Billy Wilder também rodou a sua versão da história em A Primeira Página, de 1974.

Uma obra que aparece frequentemente não só em listas de filmes sobre jornalismo, mas também nas melhores produções de todos os tempos é Cidadão Kane (1941), dirigido, escrito, produzido e estrelado por Orson Welles. A história mostra a busca de um jornalista em busca do significado de “rosebud” a última palavra pronunciada por Charles Foster Kane, um magnata da imprensa. Há muitos filmes que abordam o comportamento e a importância da atuação da mídia vêm sendo produzidos, por isso o Cinema Transcendental listou 10 filmes sobre jornalismo que você deveria conhecer.

1 – SEDE DE ESCÂNDALO (1931)

No período entre 1929 e 1934 o cinema norte-americano viveu uma época singular, o cinema falado já havia se estabelecido e ainda não existia o Código Hays (Motion Picture Production Code) que proibia cenas de adultério, uso de drogas, suicídio, sexo ou qualquer ato de homossexualidade, restringindo a liberdade de expressão dos cineastas. O filme Sede de Escândalo, dirigido por Mervyn LeRoy em 1931, é fruto desta época e influenciou as futuras produções sobre o jornalismo. O título original Five Star Final se refere ao tempo em que os jornais competiam publicando várias edições vespertinas durante o dia e marcavam a edição final com cinco estrelas e a palavra: final.

A trama de Sede de Escândalo, baseada na peça de Louis Weitzenkorn, conta a história de Joseph W. Randall (Edward G. Robinson) um editor de um jornal que aceita publicar uma matéria de retrospectiva dos 20 anos do caso de uma secretária que teria matado o homem que a engravidou porque ele se recusou a casar com ela. A mulher se chama Nancy Voorhees (Frances Starr) e agora está casada com Michael Townsend (H. B. Warner), além de ter a filha Jenny (Marian Marsh) que já está adulta e noiva. Na realidade o idealizador da matéria é Bernard Hinchecliffe (Oscar Apfel), que ocupa o cargo hierarquicamente superior ao de publisher e pretende aumentar as vendas do jornal. Hinchecliffe contrata o inescrupuloso repórter T. Vernon Isopod (Boris Karloff) que se disfarça e consegue a informação que a família de bom nível social do noivo de Jenny está em dúvida sobre o casamento do jovem em consequência da repercussão do caso do crime cometido há 20 anos. A informação é usada em outra matéria publicada no jornal de Randall e Hinchecliffe.

Nancy tenta fazer com que Randall abandone a pauta, quando ele se recusa Nancy se suicida. Pouco tempo depois o marido dela Michael faz o mesmo, aumentando a tragédia. Philip Weeks (Anthony Bushell), o noivo de Jenny, contraria a família e não cancela o casamento. Jenny aponta uma arma para Randall, tentando forçá-lo a assumir a culpa pela morte de seus pais, logo Phillip entra em cena e acalma Jenny. Na conclusão da história Randall decide denunciar Hinchecliffe e se demitir do jornal. Ainda em 1931 o diretor Mervyn LeRoy e o ator Edward G. Robinson produziram o clássico filme de máfia Alma no Lodo (Little Caesar).

2 – RELÓGIO VERDE (1948)

Em Relógio Verde (The Big Clock), de 1948, a história de George Stroud (Ray Milland) é contada através de flashbacks. George é um editor chefe de uma revista de casos policiais que trabalha bastante na Janoth Publications, uma editora de Nova York identificada pelo enorme relógio que fica no alto do prédio da empresa. George planeja tirar férias na companhia com a esposa, mas é surpreendido com a notícia de sua demissão dada pelo seu chefe Earl Janoth (Charles Laughton). Pauline York (Rita Johnson), a amante de Earl Janoth, procura George com o objetivo de pedir ajuda para chantagear o poderoso magnata da imprensa.

No mesmo dia Pauline é assassinada por Earl Janoth no apartamento da mulher. George consegue ver alguém saindo da casa, porém não identifica o rosto da pessoa. Steve Hagen (George Macready), o braço direito de Janoth, vai até o apartamento para limpar a cena do crime. Earl Janoth recontrata George Stroud para investigar o caso do assassinato de Pauline York. Todos os indícios apontam que George seja o assassino, ele precisa se livrar da culpa e descobrir quem é o verdadeiro assassino de Pauline. Relógio Verde é um filme do gênero policial estilo noir, com direção de John Farrow e baseado no livro de suspense homônimo escrito pelo poeta Jonathan Latimer.

3 – A MONTANHA DOS SETE ABUTRES (1951)

O drama noir escrito, produzido e dirigido por Billy Wilder em 1951, mostra como a imprensa pode usar táticas inescrupulosas para tirar proveito de uma situação. Estrelado por Kirk Douglas na pele de Charles Tatum, um inescrupuloso repórter que não para em nenhum emprego, o longa acompanha a sua chegada em Alburquerque, Novo México para começar a trabalhar em jornal local. Inicialmente sua ideia era trabalhar nesse jornal no máximo por dois meses, mas após não conseguiu nenhuma outra oportunidade nem escreveu um bom artigo. Mas quando Tatum fica sabendo de um caçador de tesouros (Richard Benedict) preso em uma mina, ele transforma o evento em uma sensação na mídia, pois intui que esta reportagem será a sua grande oportunidade.

Pouco a pouco o repórter vai transformando a situação em um grande espetáculo, tomando as rédeas do resgate e fazendo o possível para prolongá-lo, sendo o único a fornecer as informações aos grandes jornais. Apesar de perceber que está criando algo de grande proporção e Charles Tatum pretende levar isso adiante, colocando em risco a vida do homem que está preso. Essa história também é inspirada em um fato real, acontecido em 1925, com William Floyd Collins (1887 – 1925), um dos célebres pioneiros na exploração de cavernas do estado americano do Kentucky. De acordo com o artigo O incidente fatal de Floyd Collins durante exploração de cavernas em 1925, de autoria de Alexandre José Felizardo “os relatos sobre os esforços para salvar Collins se tornaram uma sensação nos jornais de todo o país; segundo consta, a primeira grande manchete desde o naufrágio do Titanic.” [1]. O filme foi indicado ao Oscar de Melhor Roteiro Original em 1952, mas acabou perdendo para Sinfonia de Paris, do cineasta norte-americano Vincente Minnelli.

4 – ESCÂNDALO (1952)

Antes de se tornar um cineasta renomado, o americano Samuel Fuller atuou como jornalista e escritor de romances pulp. O filme Escândalo (Scandal Sheet), dirigido por Phil Karlson em 1952, é uma adaptação do livro Black Page onde Samuel Fuller reúne uma trama característica do pulp ao universo do jornalismo. Mark Chapman é um jornalista que assume a direção de um tablóide de Nova York e apela para o sensacionalismo a fim de aumentar as vendas. Um dos destaques do longa é a fotografia de Burnett Guffey que capta os bastidores da imprensa e a atmosfera da cidade.

Mark Chapman acaba assassinando a sua mulher que reapareceu após vários anos com a intenção de chantageá-lo. Steve McClearly (John Derek), o melhor repórter do jornal de Chapman, passa a investigar o caso da morte da mulher. Charlie Barnes (Henry O’Neill), um antigo jornalista vencedor do Prêmio Pulitzer e agora alcoólatra, descobre um recibo da mala da mulher morta que estava em posse de Chapman. Barnes liga para McClearly e diz que Chapman é o assassino, McClearly não acredita na informação. Charlie Barnes decide ir ao jornal competidor para revelar o que sabe, entretanto ele é morto por Chapman antes de chegar no local. McClearly viaja para Connecticut atrás do juiz que teria casado Chapman e a misteriosa mulher morta. O juiz é levado por McClearly ao jornal e reconhece Chapman como o noivo do casamento, mas por outro nome.

5 – A HORA DA VINGANÇA (1952)

Também em 1952, Richard Brooks escreveu e dirigiu o filme A Hora da Vingança (Deadline – U.S.A) inspirado no fim do jornal New York World em 1931, incluindo a decisão dos filhos de Joseph Pulitzer de vender o jornal ao invés de comandarem a publicação. Em A Hora da Vingança acompanhamos a trajetória de Ed Hutcheson (Humphrey Bogart) o editor de um jornal de alta tiragem chamado The Day. Ele é leal a Margaret Garrison (Ethel Barrymore), viúva do fundador do jornal que herdou o comando da empresa. Todavia, Margaret pretende vender o jornal a interessados que querem fechá-lo.

Ed Hutcheson seleciona alguns repórteres para investigar a morte de uma mulher, o que pode impedir o jornal de encerrar a sua circulação ou pelo menos será a última matéria importante da publicação. Os jornalistas obtém a informação de que a mulher se chama Bessie Schmidt e foi amante do criminoso Tomas Rienzi (Martin Gabel). Além disso descobrem que Herman (Joe De Santis), irmão de Bessie, tem relações com a máfia. Ed Hutcheson fala com Herman e pede a ele que conte a história de como o assassinato ocorreu, porém Herman é morto por capangas de Tomas Rienzi. Para piorar a situação as filhas do fundador do jornal permitem que o juiz concretize a venda do The Day. A mãe de Bessie Schmidt vai ao escritório de Ed Hutcheson com o diário da filha que contém informações que incriminam Tomas Rienzi. Ed Hutcheson contraria as ameaças da máfia e publica o jornal com a reportagem que soluciona a morte de Bessie.

6 – PROFISSÃO: REPÓRTER (1975)

Dirigido por Michelangelo Antonioni em 1975 e estrelado por Jack Nicholson, a trama acompanha a jornada de David Locke um repórter de TV desiludido que é enviado para o Norte da África para fazer um registro sobre as guerrilhas da região. Ao encontrar o corpo de Robertson, um homem de enorme semelhança física, e a fim de recomeçar a vida, David assume a identidade do cadáver e passa a seguir a agenda que encontrou com o morto indo aos eventos e locais anotados ali. O repórter então descobre que Robertson era contrabandista de armas. Enquanto isso, sua esposa e colegas de trabalho começam a procurar David (agora Robertson) e ele precisa da ajuda de uma jovem turista inglesa (Maria Schneider), que aceita ajudá-lo a escapar de seus conhecidos.

Já há alguns anos, durante sua participação no Festival de Cannes, o ator Jack Nicholson se lembrou de uma frase do diretor italiano, na qual afirmava: “Os atores não têm importância nenhuma. São peças do cenário, elementos da paisagem que o diretor deve movimentar” [2]. Apesar de Profissão: Repórter acabar se transformando num road movie o filme também flerta com o thriller político (gênero que mostra os bastidores de uma disputa de poder política; são temas comuns a corrupção política, o terrorismo e a guerra). O final tem um das passagens mais famosas da história do cinema, um plano-sequência de aproximadamente sete minutos com uma câmera móvel que acompanha e depois abandona o personagem passando através das grades.

7 – TODOS OS HOMENS DO PRESIDENTE (1976)

Todos os Homens do Presidente é um filme de 1976, dirigido por Alan J. Pakula e também é baseado em fatos reais. Em 1972, o repórter Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) do Washington Post inicia uma investigação sobre a invasão de cinco homens na sede do Partido Democrata americano. Apesar da rivalidade com Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman), com a ajuda de uma fonte misteriosa conseguem fazer uma conexão entre os ladrões e um funcionário da Casa Branca que dá origem ao caso de Watergate. O escândalo político provocou a renúncia do presidente Richard Nixon, do Partido Republicano, o primeiro e único presidente a renunciar do cargo.

Todos os Homens do Presidente é uma verdadeira aula sobre o ofício de jornalista, o funcionamento do ambiente de uma redação e as dificuldade de um jornalista inexperiente ao lidar com um caso que foi um marco na história. Mostra quando uma boa apuração e um bom jornalismo podem depor até mesmo o presidente dos Estados Unidos. Na cerimônia do Oscar de 1977 venceu nas categorias de Melhor Ator Coadjuvante (Jason Robards), Melhor Direção de Arte (George Jenkins e George Gaines), Melhor Som (Arthur Piantadosi, James E. Webb, Les Fresholtz e Dick Alexander) e Melhor Roteiro Adaptado (William Goldman). Além disso, foi indicado nas categorias de Melhor Filme (Walter Coblenz), Melhor Diretor (Alan J. Pakula), Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante (Jane Alexander) e Melhor Edição (Robert L. Wolfe).

8 – NETWORK – REDE DE INTRIGAS (1976)

Ambientado nos bastidores do noticiário de uma rede de televisão estadunidense na década de 70, o âncora do telejornal Howard Beale (Peter Finch) é avisado sobre a sua demissão devido à baixa audiência. Mas antes ele consegue anunciar ao vivo que irá cometer suicídio durante o programa da próxima semana. Depois disso a audiência começa a subir por causa do seu apelo popular com mensagens revoltadas e com palavrões. A produtora Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway) captura a explosão de audiência que essa atitude gerou no povo e está disposta a ultrapassar os limites ética ou moralidade que uma emissora deveria ter.

Howard é readmitido e passa a ser conhecido como o Profeta Louco, dizendo sempre com um tom de ironia em sua mensagem: “desliguem as TVs”. Mas com o tempo seu comportamento vai ficando cada vez mais insano e faz com que os responsáveis pela sua ascensão decidam detê-lo. Dirigido por Sidney Lumet o filme foi indicado a cinco categorias no Oscar de 1977, vencendo quatro delas: Melhor Ator (Peter Finch), Melhor Atriz (Faye Dunaway), Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante (Beatrice Straight) e Melhor Roteiro Original (Paddy Chayefsky). Rede de Intrigas é uma ácida crítica ao modo de se fazer televisão nos Estados Unidos nos anos 70 e também a maneira como os espectadores consomem esse tipo de produto.

9 – VERDADES QUE MATAM (1984)

O ator e dramaturgo Eric Bogosian escreveu a peça Verdades Que Matam (Talk Radio) inspirada na história real de Alan Berg, um radialista judeu que foi assassinado em 1984. Em 1988 a peça ganhou uma versão para o cinema com direção de Oliver Stone. Eric Bogosian interpreta Barry Champlain um polêmico radialista que vive em Dallas, no Texas. Barry tem um programa de sucesso retumbante que está no processo de ser transmitido para todo os Estados Unidos, mas ele recebe ameaças quando alguns ouvintes ligam para a rádio.

Em uma determinada transmissão Barry Champlain declara:

“Eu deveria me enforcar, sou um hipócrita. Eu peço sinceridade e eu minto. Eu denuncio o sistema abraçado a ele. Eu quero dinheiro, poder e prestígio: eu quero audiência e sucesso. E eu não dou a mínima sobre você ou o mundo. (…) O que diabos é você… audiência! Vocês estão em mim toda noite como um bando de lobos porque vocês não conseguem encarar o que vocês são e o que fizeram! Sim, o mundo é um lugar terrível. Sim, o câncer e a coleta de lixo vão pegar vocês. Sim, a guerra está vindo. Sim, o mundo é um inferno e vocês estão todos perdidos. Tudo está ferrado e vocês gostam, não é? Vocês são fascinados pelos detalhes sórdidos. Estão hipnotizados pelo próprio medo. Tem diversão com inundações, acidentes de carros ou doenças incuráveis. Vocês estão felizes quando os outros sofrem. E aí que eu entro, certo? Estou aqui para guiar vocês pelas mãos através da floresta negra do seu próprio ódio, raiva e humilhação. Estou fornecendo um serviço público. (…). Do que vocês querem falar? Esportes? Animais de estimação? Orgasmos? Vocês são patéticos. Eu desprezo cada um de vocês. Vocês não tem nada, absolutamente nada. Sem cérebro, sem poder, sem futuro, sem esperança, sem Deus. A única coisa em que vocês acreditam é em mim. O que seria de vocês sem mim? Eu não tenho medo, veja. Eu venho aqui todas as noites, faço o meu trabalho, marco o meu ponto, eu falo sobre o que eu acredito. Eu digo o que vocês são, eu tenho que dizer, eu não tenho escolha! Vocês me assustam! Eu venho aqui todas as noites, eu rasgo vocês, eu abuso de vocês, eu insulto vocês, mas vocês apenas continuam voltando para mais. O que há de errado com vocês, por que vocês continuam ligando? Eu não quero mais ouvir, parem de falar! Vão embora! Um bando de pervertidos, fanáticos, intolerantes, bêbados, paranoicos, repugnantes, voyeuristas, isso é o que vocês são. Vão para o inferno. Eu não preciso da estupidez de vocês. Vocês não entendem…”

10 – O INFORMANTE (1999)

Dirigido por Michael Mann, O Informante é um drama estadunidense de 1999 com roteiro de Mann e Eric Roth, adaptado do artigo The Man Who Knew Too Much, de Marie Brenner. O filme é baseado na experiência real de Jeffrey Wigand (Russel Crowe), um bioquímico e ex-vice-presidente na fabricante americana de cigarros Brown & Williamson. Wigand ocupava o cargo de diretor de pesquisas, mas é demitido após discordar das práticas criminosas dos Sete Anões (os sete grandes da indústria do tabaco americana) para estimular a dependência nos fumantes.

Depois de prestar uma consultoria para Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino), um experiente produtor de TV, Jeffrey Wigand decide revelar, dando seu testemunho num dos programas de maior prestígio da TV americana, como a Brown & Williamson muda e ajusta as doses dos cigarros manipulando o efeito da nicotina com a adição de elementos químicos como a amônia. No entanto, Wigand assinou um termo de confidencialidade que o impede de revelar os resultados obtidos nas pesquisas nas quais ele trabalhou e porque se opôs a decisão do diretor executivo ocasionando sua demissão. Daí por diante é travada uma verdadeira batalha jurídica e jornalística para quebrar o sigilo do contrato devido a utilidade do assunto: a saúde pública da população e dos consumidores de cigarro.
