The Coprophagic AI crisis
Tumblr media
I'm on tour with my new, nationally bestselling novel The Bezzle! Catch me in TORONTO on Mar 22, then with LAURA POITRAS in NYC on Mar 24, then Anaheim, and more!
Tumblr media
A key requirement for being a science fiction writer without losing your mind is the ability to distinguish between science fiction (futuristic thought experiments) and predictions. SF writers who lack this trait come to fancy themselves fortune-tellers who SEE! THE! FUTURE!
The thing is, sf writers cheat. We palm cards in order to set up pulp adventure stories that let us indulge our thought experiments. These palmed cards – say, faster-than-light drives or time-machines – are narrative devices, not scientifically grounded proposals.
Historically, the fact that some people – both writers and readers – couldn't tell the difference wasn't all that important, because people who fell prey to the sf-as-prophecy delusion didn't have the power to re-orient our society around their mistaken beliefs. But with the rise and rise of sf-obsessed tech billionaires who keep trying to invent the torment nexus, sf writers are starting to be more vocal about distinguishing between our made-up funny stories and predictions (AKA "cyberpunk is a warning, not a suggestion"):
https://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2023/11/dont-create-the-torment-nexus.html
In that spirit, I'd like to point to how one of sf's most frequently palmed cards has become a commonplace of the AI crowd. That sleight of hand is: "add enough compute and the computer will wake up." This is a shopworn cliche of sf, the idea that once a computer matches the human brain for "complexity" or "power" (or some other simple-seeming but profoundly nebulous metric), the computer will become conscious. Think of "Mike" in Heinlein's *The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Moon_Is_a_Harsh_Mistress#Plot
For people inflating the current AI hype bubble, this idea that making the AI "more powerful" will correct its defects is key. Whenever an AI "hallucinates" in a way that seems to disqualify it from the high-value applications that justify the torrent of investment in the field, boosters say, "Sure, the AI isn't good enough…yet. But once we shovel an order of magnitude more training data into the hopper, we'll solve that, because (as everyone knows) making the computer 'more powerful' solves the AI problem":
https://locusmag.com/2023/12/commentary-cory-doctorow-what-kind-of-bubble-is-ai/
As the lawyers say, this "cites facts not in evidence." But let's stipulate that it's true for a moment. If all we need to make the AI better is more training data, is that something we can count on? Consider the problem of "botshit," Andre Spicer and co's very useful coinage describing "inaccurate or fabricated content" shat out at scale by AIs:
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4678265
"Botshit" was coined last December, but the internet is already drowning in it. Desperate people, confronted with an economy modeled on a high-speed game of musical chairs in which the opportunities for a decent livelihood grow ever scarcer, are being scammed into generating mountains of botshit in the hopes of securing the elusive "passive income":
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/15/passive-income-brainworms/#four-hour-work-week
Botshit can be produced at a scale and velocity that beggars the imagination. Consider that Amazon has had to cap the number of self-published "books" an author can submit to a mere three books per day:
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/sep/20/amazon-restricts-authors-from-self-publishing-more-than-three-books-a-day-after-ai-concerns
As the web becomes an anaerobic lagoon for botshit, the quantum of human-generated "content" in any internet core sample is dwindling to homeopathic levels. Even sources considered to be nominally high-quality, from Cnet articles to legal briefs, are contaminated with botshit:
https://theconversation.com/ai-is-creating-fake-legal-cases-and-making-its-way-into-real-courtrooms-with-disastrous-results-225080
Ironically, AI companies are setting themselves up for this problem. Google and Microsoft's full-court press for "AI powered search" imagines a future for the web in which search-engines stop returning links to web-pages, and instead summarize their content. The question is, why the fuck would anyone write the web if the only "person" who can find what they write is an AI's crawler, which ingests the writing for its own training, but has no interest in steering readers to see what you've written? If AI search ever becomes a thing, the open web will become an AI CAFO and search crawlers will increasingly end up imbibing the contents of its manure lagoon.
This problem has been a long time coming. Just over a year ago, Jathan Sadowski coined the term "Habsburg AI" to describe a model trained on the output of another model:
https://twitter.com/jathansadowski/status/1625245803211272194
There's a certain intuitive case for this being a bad idea, akin to feeding cows a slurry made of the diseased brains of other cows:
https://www.cdc.gov/prions/bse/index.html
But "The Curse of Recursion: Training on Generated Data Makes Models Forget," a recent paper, goes beyond the ick factor of AI that is fed on botshit and delves into the mathematical consequences of AI coprophagia:
https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.17493
Co-author Ross Anderson summarizes the finding neatly: "using model-generated content in training causes irreversible defects":
https://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/2023/06/06/will-gpt-models-choke-on-their-own-exhaust/
Which is all to say: even if you accept the mystical proposition that more training data "solves" the AI problems that constitute total unsuitability for high-value applications that justify the trillions in valuation analysts are touting, that training data is going to be ever-more elusive.
What's more, while the proposition that "more training data will linearly improve the quality of AI predictions" is a mere article of faith, "training an AI on the output of another AI makes it exponentially worse" is a matter of fact.

my lover, lover, lover (you shot me down 뱅뱅)
summary / the inspiration that mamma mia! can unexpectedly bring warnings / none
there’s one too many times when he really should hold his tongue back. once, when he spilled the whereabouts of julian's proposal plans in a late night escapade to erika's younger sister, the biggest tattletale of them all. two, when he mentioned his own desire to get married to a girl who shattered one too many pieces of his heart in the end — love blinds thee unfortunate ones, and seojoon isn't privvy to being saved. three, when he told his mom that he didn't want to watch mamma mia with her, despite knowing how much comfort it brings her.
to be fair, he's seen it, what? eight times in the past year with her? today will mark the first of 2024.
and then, there’s now, as he marches to the kitchen to replenish an empty takeya steel bottle he's left at home to rot in the past few months (nothing a good ol' scrubbing wont fix). "doesn't it seem too rash that they'd want to venture out on a year long's adventure while not really having a solid source of income?" a solo tirade, spilling out of his mouth filter-free that by the time his mind finally caught up, he reverts in complete silence, falling passive once more.
“love makes you do stupid things sometimes, joonie.." his mom's voice is wistful as it trails in the end, manicured nails scratching at the nape. he knows the tale well, a passion filled month with a useless man who would leave her in the end for the conception of seojoon - he knows how much she relates to amanda seyfried's character all too well.
love makes you do stupid things sometimes. he repeats this in his head. love makes you do stupid things all the time.
and that’s how he lands himself in the crevices of his room, scribbling and noting and playing around with any beat that comes. end of solo promotions and the beginnings of a next project, yet he fails to make time for any morsel of peace and solace when he’s slaving away one by one, skewing sounds here and there to make for a song with an impact.
at best, what he comes up with in the minutes of fatigue consist of nothing more than a johnny stimson's inspired harmony. lyrics that cater towards the risk one takes when they're falling in love. when they're deep in love. he starts with a strike of ‘my lover, lover, lover,' layer over the middle a bit, shoots it down (bang bang). it doesn't take long, in fact, it comes all naturally to him.
heavy synth, an electronic sound — and he wants to fall back to the limelight of the golden days, where the song standstills on its own. so, he pulls himself out of the box he’s trapped himself in of self-dwelling croons of trap beats and brings himself to face the mind of his emotions. he'll get to the languid croons of tenderness, aiming for something different — whimsical, something that feels like he’s spinning on his toes, magical and dreamy.
it’s plagued in various cues, the rap and rhyme. vague references to pop culture phenomenon — too many ad-libs that make his head dizzy when he’s running through the guide track.
but when he thinks of a lover, it's always back to the feeling of being down bad, so bad that you lose any sense of logic. like sophie, as she sends those three letters to her unknown father, the possibility of success terrifying. and there's sky, sky who puts her on a pedestal, as one should, catering to her needs, her needs, her needs.. it’s in the bridges of love, and this bridge that holds his attention for days. hours, minutes to the seconds when he runs through each idea of a rhythm before settling on what he thinks would fit him best.
an email drafted, he scrawls out “mamma mia.mp3 - check it out (draft)” as the subject before placing the mp3 file and hitting send to julian and ej.

x10 your income - Top 5 ways to make passive income with crypto even when NOT WORKING.
Content creators like us often think "Is there a way to make my money increase while I'm engrossed in the text somewhere?" What I mean here is that you can only do one job during office hours but your income is the same as if you worked 2, 3 or even 10 jobs at the same time. That's the magic of passive income. I hope this article can give you some ideas to increase your income, increase your assets without spending too much effort.
DO YOU KNOW ANY WAY TO EARN $10,000/MONTH PASSIVE INCOME? TOP 5 WAYS TO EARN PASSIVE INCOME WITH CRYPTO TO HELP YOU EARN $10,000/MONTH. DO NOT MISS!!!
Tumblr media
HOW TO MAKE PASSIVE INCOME
As mentioned above, the most important step when investing in the cryptocurrency industry without spending too much capital is choosing the RIGHT WAY AND OBJECT TO INVEST.
How to choose the right object and method? The fastest way is to listen to experts, invest with them. This is a fairly common form today because it takes less time and effort of investors. But anyway, it's your money, you take the risk, so before investing in any field, each of us should learn carefully, consider carefully and, importantly, believe in yourself.
Staking
Staking is the act of holding and locking a certain number of coins in order to receive rewards from them. These coins can be locked in the wallet or nodes of a Blockchain project for a period of time. The reward will be based on the user's effort, including staked coin amount & stake duration.
Staking to receive Reward:
Staking to receive Reward: Users will use their tokens to stake back into the project's ecosystem. This staking does not directly participate in the validation of transactions or any tasks related to network operations.
You can think of staking as the crypto equivalent of putting money in a high-yield savings account. When you deposit funds in a savings account, the bank takes that money and typically lends it out to others. In return for locking up that money with the bank, you receive a portion of the interest earned from lending – albeit a very very low portion.
Similarly, when you stake your digital assets, you lock up the coins in order to participate in running the blockchain and maintaining its security. In exchange for that, you earn rewards calculated in percentage yields. These returns are typically much higher than any interest rate offered by banks.
For example, Stake Aden token on the exchange (hold) for a profit. That part of the profit comes from the exchange's profits, not from the creation of new blocks or transaction fees.
Aden is one of the tokens that are considered to be very potent shortly, it is expected that by 2024, the value will rise to about $1 / Aden. Please research carefully before deciding to invest, if you own Aden from now on, you will earn x500 times the amount you spend.
Tumblr media
As the first fully decentralized gambling system of the 4th generation, ADENE gives its community access to possibilities previously exclusively owned by the game monopoly. Thanks to the use of NFTs, users are now becoming operators. ADENE innovations begin where ordinary gaming platforms end. For the first time in the millennia-old history of gambling, users and operators are becoming one.ADENE users can practically construct their own casino business with low barriers to entry. Starting one’s own business creatively has never been easier.
Staking by investing in NFT Slot Machine:
Recently I found a very special platform that allows players to become operators, allowing them to own their own NFT slot machine by assembling a minimum of 10 NFT items and minting it becomes an NFT slot machine. That NFT slot machine is operated independently of the platform, its creator is 100% owned, and the platform issuer cannot interfere.
I highly encourage you to create your own NFT slot machine and operate it on the Adene Platform. But the topic of the article is passive income and I need to focus on it. You can invest in NFT Slot Machines to earn more passive income.
I will say it in an easy to understand way:
Let's say I own an NFT slot machine, I have spent most of my money on minting so now I need to find an investor to help me operate the machine. The operating cost is $10,000 and I raised $5,000 for 50% of the operating costs. All you need to do is invest and operate is my job.
In the first month, our slot machine made $6,000 in profit. You will receive 80% profit based on the amount you invest.
The amount you invest is currently 50% of operating costs. Then your profit is $2,400/month. The number is quite ideal for passive income.
Tumblr media
2. Mining
Coin mining is not new to players in the crypto market. For a time, this job blossomed to the point where people mined coins and miners housed coins. And it has helped many people become millionaires.
An example that I give you is: "Two kids make more than $30,000 from mining cryptocurrency". If you follow the crypto market, you've probably heard this story before.
Tumblr media
During the three-month summer break, a 14-year-old boy and a 9-year-old sister can earn around $36,000 from mining Bitcoin, Ether, and Ravencoin themselves at home.
Ishaan Thakur (14 years old) and her sister Aanya (9 years old) have spent the summer building a lucrative cryptocurrency mining company. Both chose to mine three cryptocurrencies: bitcoin (the largest cryptocurrency by market value) and ether (the second largest digital currency), and raven coin (an altcoin, a digital currency that replaces Bitcoin) in the top 100.
According to the publication, the 14-year-old boy and his 9-year-old sister earned a total of about $36,000 at the end of September.
Currently, the Crypto market is in hibernation. Revenue has dropped to a record but Bitcoin miners are still trying to plug in.
According to data from Blockchain.com, the daily mining revenue of miners fell about 27% in May. On May 1, the daily revenue of all Bitcoin miners reached $40.57 million. By the end of May, that number dropped to $29.37 million.
Bitcoin mining revenue bottomed out at $22.43 million on May 24. Compared to the all-time high, this is down about 62%.
Despite the decline in revenue and profits, the Bitcoin network's hash rate remains high. The high hash rate but  low profitability shows that the level of competition among miners is much greater than in the past. During market declines, Bitcoin miners often shut down their miners and stop receiving profits.
Please consider carefully before deciding to become a "farmer in 4.0".
Yield Farming
Yield farming (yield mining) is a way to earn more cryptocurrency from the cryptocurrency itself. Specifically, it's you lending your money to others through computer programs called smart contracts. In return, you can earn interest in the form of cryptocurrency.
The most popular forms of yield farming today are:
Short-term borrowing and lending on dApps: Compound and Aave.
Lending money in the money market is the easiest way to profit in decentralized finance. Compound and Aave are DeFi's two main lending and borrowing protocols. The two protocols combined currently account for $1.1 billion in the lending market and $390 million in the borrowing market (pictured below).
Tumblr media
Create liquidity on: Uniswap and Balancer:
Uniswap and Balancer are the two largest liquidity-generating protocols in decentralized finance (DeFi), providing liquidity providers with fees as a reward when they deposit their accounts product into the group. Liquidity pools are constituted between the two assets in a 50-50 ratio in the Uniswap protocol. Whereas Balancer allows up to eight assets in a liquidity pool with custom allocation on each asset.
Whenever a trade is made through a liquidity pool on Uniswap or Balancer, the liquidity providers (LPs) that have contributed to that pool are entitled to a fee.
It can be said that Yield Farming is a very new and attractive form of passive investment in the decentralized financial market. However, investors need to learn carefully about the form, type of coin and the associated risks before deciding to invest.
4. Lending
Tumblr media
Lending is a way you lend idle assets. When the loan expires, you will receive both the principal and the interest. Cryptocurrency lending is attractive because it passively secures income by avoiding market fluctuations and is correlated with interest rates.
In the past, when the cryptocurrency market was not too developed, investors often loaned some key coins such as BTC, ETH, etc. Today, thanks to the strong development of DeFi, lending has expanded. more. Accordingly, you can lend any coin/token you own to earn interest.
Even so, lending itself is still risky if the price of the coin you're lending to falls during the loan term.
Example: You open a BTC extend. The interest rate is 1.6%/year for 14 days.
July 16, 2021 (starting lending): BTC price is $55.
July 30, 2021 (principal + interest payment): BTC price is $50.
If you lend 5 BTC, your estimated principal and interest will be: 5 + 5 x 1.6% x 14/365 = 5,003 BTC, equivalent to $275,165 (calculated at the time of lending).
But if calculated according to the BTC price at the time of interest payment, the total income will be 5,003 x 50 = $250,150, a decrease of more than 10%.
5. Hold Dividend Token
Tumblr media
Dividend Token allows holders to receive passive income without having to have ownership in the organization.
Example of dividend token:
KuCoin Token (KCS).
50% of all exchange transaction fees are shared with token holders.
Holders receive a daily dividend payment.
Dividends will be paid in the form of KCS tokens. You can sell or add to your existing portfolio.
There is no minimum holding period, you can sell your tokens at any time.
You need a minimum of 6 KCS tokens to be rewarded.
Bibox Tokens (BIX), which pays owners 45% of Bibox's net transaction fee profits.
Bibox Dividend Bonus was introduced in April 2018. To qualify for a dividend payment, you just need to buy Bibox tokens, hold and lock at least 500 of them on the exchange. And then every week on Friday you will get 30-45% net trading profit share for that week.
Previously bonuses were paid out only if you made at least one trade during that week. But this has since been changed, which is a welcome update for investors looking for passive income.
In some cases dividend payout depends on whether the issuer has met performance milestones or targets and this is beyond your control.
In addition, dividends are distributed when the project is profitable. If the project starts to lose money, you may not receive regular dividends and the value of the tokens you are holding may plummet. Therefore, you should consider investing carefully before entering the market.
Conclusion:
Above, I introduced you to the concept and some ways to earn passive income in the crypto market. The above methods can give you a certain amount of passive income and financial freedom, but remember that “no lunch is free”. Either way has certain risks. Let's start with staking, do your research and make the right choice.

Inside the scammy world of garbage ebook publishing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Garbage ebooks are all over Amazon’s Kindle store, on every topic.
Searching for Jonathan Haidt’s bestselling new book The Anxious Generation, I found Jonathan Haidt: The Biography of Jonathan David Haidt, Navigating Morality and Policy; A Joosr Guide to… The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom; and The Jonathan Haidt Story: Exploring the Life and Work of a Renowned Social Psychologist, Author, and Advocate.
None of these are actually books so much as book-shaped digital files, designed to be picked up in keyword searches and get clicked on in a hurry by someone a tiny bit distracted or not digitally savvy enough to notice what they’re doing.
This kind of grift has been around for a while.
Now, with the rise of large language models, garbage ebooks have become easier and cheaper than ever to make.
Garbage book grifters often don’t use AI to write their books, but they do use it to pick a topic and build an outline.
Then they give the outline to a wildly underpaid ghostwriter to flesh it out into something that will pass muster as a real book.
The model is a dangerously inviting prospect for anyone who’s ever toyed with the idea of publishing a book but doesn’t want to actually write one.
It turns out, though, that the people who make garbage ebooks mostly lose money.
The real cash seems to come from the people who teach others the garbage ebook scheme.
These teachers claim they’ve shared the key to a life of passive income, but their students say all their courses offer is demands for more and more money, with the ever-deferred promise to teach you the real secrets to easy money once you’ve paid just a few thousand more dollars.
Even these grifters are not the real villains.
They are often small-time operators working one level of a very big grift industry.
The grift is that technology and retail platforms have incentivized a race to the bottom when it comes to selling books.
They’ve built an ecosystem where all the incentives are to sell at high volume and low cost.
In book production, the biggest cost-saving and time-saving measure you can take is cutting out the labor of writing the actual book.
Together, without ever caring enough about the issue to deliberately try to do so, these corporations have built a landscape in which it’s hard to trust what you read and hard to sell what you write.
In the end, everyone loses: the would-be writers getting grifted in a fake publishing school, the real writers whose products are getting choked out of the marketplace by floods of cheap garbage, and the readers who just want to be able to buy a book without having to check to make sure the author isn’t a robot.
I asked Elan Trybuch if he thought anyone was buying all those fake mushroom foraging guides.
“Yeah,” he said. “I mean, there’s a sucker born every minute.”

‘An attack on the entire community’
Slain Chicago police Officer Luis Huesca mourned at visitation

Rays of sunlight filtered through the clouds Sunday evening as firefighters and police officers filed into the Blake-Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn.
Inside, they joined family and friends grieving Chicago police Officer Luis Huesca.
As cars drove down the busy street, they slowed when passing a U.S. flag fluttering from a firetruck ladder.
Drivers and passengers rolled their windows down to look at a sign bearing a photo of a smiling Huesca, his name, badge number and last watch: April 21, 2024.
Tumblr media
Huesca, 30, was shot and fatally wounded driving home from work in Gage Park while in uniform.
Late Friday night, the Chicago Police Department announced a suspect in the case, and a judge signed off on a warrant for the arrest of Xavier Tate Jr.
Huesca’s family spoke Saturday in a video conversation with Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police.
“April 23 was his birthday, and it was so hard for me,” Edith Huesca said in the video. “For me as a mother, I’m asking for justice. It won’t give us a lot, but it’ll just give us a little relief in our pain.”
Throughout the day, hundreds of mourners paid their respects at a visitation for the fallen officer.
As people streamed into the building early Sunday afternoon, two police officers sat outside the doors on police horses.
Bernice Granado said she was a police officer in Chicago for 10 years and came to Huesca’s visitation Sunday to support his family.
“It hurts right here,” Granado said, gesturing to her heart. “I never knew him, but he still feels like family. It hurts.”
Gene Roy, a former police chief of detectives who was with the department for 35 years, said he’s tired of going to funerals and visitations and hopes this is the last visitation he’ll have to attend.
“Our hearts go out today to the family, the friends, the coworkers, and ultimately, the entire city,” Roy said. “Because when an officer falls in the line of duty, is murdered senselessly, it’s not just an attack on the officer, but an attack on the entire community we live in.”
Maria Okninski, a medical professional and a Chicago-area resident, also attended Sunday’s services. She said she came because she thinks support for police officers has fallen.
According to Tribune reports, Huesca is the third Chicago police officer to be shot — and the first fatally — this year, a figure Okninski said is “unacceptable and tragic.”
Both Huesca and Officer Aréanah Preston, who was shot and killed as she returned from a late-night shift last May, served in the Calumet (5th) District.
Just over a year ago, Huesca eulogized his friend Officer Andrés Vásquez Lasso in a video after Vásquez Lasso was killed in the line of duty.
“This is becoming too frequent, and it’s upsetting,” Okninski said.
“The lack of respect nowadays for police officers is just horrible. I just feel so sorry for all the officers for what they’re going through.”
Dan Beazley, a Detroit native, walked up and down the line outside the visitation holding a 10-foot cross.
Beazley said he was there hoping to help the family start the healing process.
“These officers put their life on the line every day. I would travel across the country to just about anywhere to support them,” Beazley said. “I hope seeing this cross helps them heal.”

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation provides support to the families of officers killed or gravely injured while on duty.
Sandra Wortham, the president of the foundation’s executive board, lost her brother, Thomas Wortham, in 2010. She said showing up for events like these can be painful, but she wants people to remember that officers are part of the community , too.
“The way we’ve lost officers in the past couple of years to me shows us that despite what some people try to say, our officers are part of our community,” Wortham said. “They are falling victim to the same violence that our communities are.”
Thomas Wortham died in front of his home after three people tried to steal his motorcycle.
Huesca died close to his home, and his car was missing when police arrived.
Funeral services for Huesca are set to take place at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel in Chicago’s Ashburn neighborhood.
Tumblr media
Editorial:
At the funeral of a fallen officer such as Luis Huesca, his family sets the rules.
Politicians have no standing.
Funerals have one rule above all others: respect the wishes of the bereaved immediate family.
So Mayor Brandon Johnson made the correct call in not attending St. Rita of Cascia Catholic Church on Monday morning for the funeral of slain Chicago police Officer Luis Huesca, even though his office had put out a schedule late Sunday saying he was going and even though Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza appeared to jump on a political opportunity for a mayoral humiliation.
Tumblr media
On Sunday evening, Mendoza tweeted that Huesca’s “grief-stricken mother” had, at that day’s visitation for the fallen officer, asked both Mendoza and Rep. Angelica Guerrero Cuellar to communicate to Johnson that he was “unwelcome at her son’s funeral.”
Tumblr media
Mendoza said that they both had called the mayor before 10 p.m. only then to read the announcement of his planned attendance around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, as did we.
We’re familiar with the mayor’s long-troubled media operations, so it could well be the issue there was that whoever was sending out the schedule was not up to date on the events of the last hour.
Mendoza was right to call the mayor and convey familial wishes, but she did not need to make all of that public.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, it also looks like the mayor dithered in what to do. He needed to stay away, at a mother’s request.
That decision should have taken him about five seconds to make.
This may well have looked like a political problem for the mayor, given that the officer’s mother was asking him not to come on the grounds that she believed he was not supportive of Chicago’s police officers.
But a grieving mother gets to ask what she wants to ask on the day of her son’s funeral, whatever the political cost to anyone else.
Period.
There were reports that Gov. J. B. Pritzker also had been asked to stay away (and did, although the funeral did not appear on his official schedule) and other public figures considered by the family to be insufficiently supportive of police officers being either discouraged from coming or asked to leave.
What do we have say to about that?
It’s pretty simple.
Funerals and wakes are not political events.
People often go to them as part of their jobs, as well they should, but those attendees do not have the standing there of those who have loved and raised the lost person.
The bereaved family gets to say what it wants, what it feels, and it behooves everyone else to shut up and follow their instructions.
When a parent has lost her child, that is all that matters on the day of a funeral.
Funerals can certainly have political impacts: look at what happened in Chicago in 1955 when Mamie Till-Mobley opened the casket of her son, Emmett Till, for all to see what was done to him.
But that was a shattering and profoundly courageous decision made by his mom, the only person with the moral authority to do so in that moment.
In this case, a mother made a different choice, as was her right.
What Edith Huesca did might also have an impact when it comes to the public support of Chicago police.
For once again here, Johnson has run into the chronic problem of trying to be both an activist, prone to anti-police rhetoric and in the thrall of the far left, while also being the mayor of a city whose job it is to pay respect to the daily dangers faced by police officers and to urge us to better appreciate not only their sacrifices but those of family members terrified they will not arrive home safely at the end of their shift.
As was the case with Huesca, a six-year veteran of the force.
Huesca was killed just a few blocks from his home in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side on April 21.
He was driving back from work at about 3 a.m. in the 3100 block of West 56th Street when he was shot, according to police Superintendent Larry Snelling.
According to the police, a ShotSpotter alert brought officers racing to the scene, where they then found the 30-year-old Huesca (who was still wearing his police uniform) with multiple gunshot wounds, a victim of an apparent carjacking, given that Huesca’s vehicle was allegedly stolen.
On Friday, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Xavier Tate Jr., 22, an Aurora man.
Tate is charged with the first-degree murder of Huesca and, as we write, is still at large and to be considered armed and dangerous.
Like the killing of Officer Ella French in 2021 and the death of Officer Aréanah Preston in 2023, the murder of Huesca shocks us to the core.
It reminds us of the huge dangers faced by Chicago police, as well as the lack of safety in our city’s neighborhoods.
We don’t know if Huesca’s uniform motivated the carjacking or whether the same fate would have befallen a citizen who was not a police officer.
We do know French, Preston and Huesca all were young people with much living left do.
We also believe the lack of support clearly felt by Huesca’s family should prompt some soul-searching by some of our politicians and those who work for them.
In general, we see far more passion publicly directed at what many of these leaders view as police misdeeds or excesses compared with how they express grief or sorrow when an officer is cut down in our gun-riddled city.
Every tired Chicagoan deserves to able to come home late at night from their work and make it there safely.
Then, instead of witnessing funereal politics intensified by unspeakable grief, we could all rest more easily in our beds.
Slain Chicago police Officer Luis Huesca remembered as ‘Lionheart’ by family as his funeral is held
The typically busy stretch of South Western Avenue outside St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel was quiet Monday morning.
Instead of tractor-trailers hauling freight, the thoroughfare was lined with scores of police vehicles from cities and towns across northern Illinois.
Hundreds of Chicago cops and their counterparts from nearby municipalities gathered at St. Rita for the funeral mass of Luis Huesca, the 30-year-old Chicago Police Department officer who was fatally shot earlier this month as he returned to his home in Gage Park.
Bagpipers played hymns and television news helicopters circled overhead as those in attendance stood on St. Rita’s north lawn and silently saluted while the hearse carrying Huesca’s remains arrived at the church.
The chapel at St. Rita — a regular setting for first responder funerals — soon filled to capacity after Huesca’s casket, draped with a Chicago flag, was carried inside.
Emiliano Huesca Jr., Luis Huesca’s older brother, remembered the slain officer as wise beyond his years, a well-rounded world traveler who took pride in caring for his mother and who “always put others first.”
“Luis, your nickname should be ‘Lionheart,” Emiliano Huesca Jr. told mourners in attendance, reading from a letter he wrote to his brother.
“You were an exceptional person with courage, bravery, humility and pride in your work. And you had dedication for those you touched. Rest in peace, my brother, and I love you.”
The 30-year-old Luis Huesca was shot and killed April 21 near his home in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, just two days before his 31st birthday.
Huesca had just finished his patrol shift in the CPD’s Calumet District (5th) before he was shot.
His car was also stolen.
“This is a day to celebrate the great contributions that this officer has provided this city. The protection of others is what he wanted every single day,” CPD Superintendent Larry Snelling told mourners.
“Let’s remember the greatness of this young man, let’s remember the kindness of this young man, and let’s take something from that. Let’s take something from this family. Let’s continue to do the work that we do, and let’s continue to remember Officer Huesca.

Those who worked closely with Huesca recalled his sense of humor and his ability to make others feel welcome.
Huesca’s sergeant, Curtisine Gilmore, said Huesca could be counted on to show up to work ready to serve and protect, but also ready to listen. Gilmore recalled a time when Huesca asked her for advice in his dating life.
“He said, ‘I don’t know why I’m telling you this,’ and I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t know why he’s telling me this, either,’” Gilmore said. “Maybe it’s because I’m around the same age as his mom, or he just needed a female perspective.”
“Either way, I obliged and continued to listen, and there were some things he could have left out of that story that I didn’t need to know,” Gilmore continued, eliciting a brief moment of levity.
“But when he was done, I did give him my opinion, and we laughed about it. I share this experience with you all because it meant a lot to me, that he valued my opinion and my input in what was going on in his life. I will forever cherish his memory and will always remember the impact he had on me, his team, this department and the city of Chicago.”
The investigation into Huesca’s killing remains active.
On Friday, a Cook County judge signed an arrest warrant for a man wanted in connection with the shooting, though he was not in custody as of Monday.
Snelling announced last week that the department determined Huesca died in the line of duty.
The designation was announced last Tuesday, on what would have been Huesca’s 31st birthday, and it entitles his family to survivor’s death benefits.
In a message to all CPD members last week, Snelling said he’s recently spent time with those closest to Huesca.
Huesca is the third Chicago police officer to be shot — and the first fatally — this year.
On Jan. 8, a veteran police officer was shot in the leg during an exchange of gunfire with a burglary suspect in the Gold Coast neighborhood.
On March 21, an officer was shot by Dexter Reed, who was killed by police gunfire during the traffic stop in Humboldt Park.
Last year, CPD Officer Andrés Vásquez Lasso — a friend of Huesca’s — was fatally shot in the line of duty about a half mile north of where Huesca was fatally wounded.
In a remembrance video for Vásquez Lasso, Huesca described him as “one of those guys that actually deserved this star.”
Huesca’s wake was held Sunday. During the service, the slain officer’s family told Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza — whose brother is a CPD officer — that they did not want Mayor Brandon Johnson to attend Monday’s funeral service.

Mendoza said she relayed that message to Johnson’s office Sunday night before the release of Johnson’s Monday schedule.
Johnson’s press office said late Sunday that the mayor would attend the funeral, but reversed course Monday morning.
Johnson’s current and former chiefs of staff could be seen in attendance, though.
“We continue to send our deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of Officer Luis Huesca as they heal from the loss of their beloved son, nephew, brother and friend,” Johnson said in an emailed statement Monday. “As mayor, I vow to continue supporting our police and first responders, uniting our city and remaining committed to working with everyone towards building a better, stronger, safer Chicago. My heart is with the Huesca family today. God bless them and God bless the City of Chicago.”
Huesca’s mother, Edith Huesca, spoke Saturday in a video conversation with Chicago’s Fraternal Order of Police.
“April 23 was his birthday, and it was so hard for me,” she said. “For me as a mother, I’m asking for justice. It won’t give us a lot, but it’ll just give us a little relief in our pain.”
Harris County sheriff's deputy John Coddou funeral is Wednesday
Houstonians will pay final respects Wednesday to Harris County sheriff's deputy John Coddou, who died April 20 after he was struck by a truck while helping a motorist.
Coddou, who had worked with the sheriff's office for over two decades, will be remembered by friends, family and colleagues.
Services for Coddou will be at 1 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, 19449 Katy Freeway.
After the funeral, a graveside service will be at Forest Park Southwest Cemetery, 9040 FM 359, Richmond, Texas.
Coddou, 50, died on Grand Parkway in Cypress after he stopped to help a driver on the side of the road who had been in another crash.
John Coddou remembered as deputy who went 'beyond' to help
John Coddou stopped to help people.
In August 2016, a man had perched himself on the edge of an entrance ramp on Texas 99, 100 feet above the ground. He was threatening to jump, but Coddou, a deputy who long patrolled western parts of Harris County, talked to the man for 30 minutes and, with the help of other deputies, managed to get him to back away from the edge.
Coddou’s role in saving the man received a small write-up in the Houston Chronicle.
But one detail wasn’t included in the story.
“Johnny asked him ‘Do you need a hug?’” his mother, Rose Harshfield, said Thursday. “And he went up and hugged him, and Johnny was telling him nothing’s this bad for you to lose your life.”
“He talked him off and gave him a hug,” Harshfield said. “That’s who he was.”
Coddou, 50, died Tuesday when he was hit by a truck in the median of the Grand Parkway in northwest Houston.
He had stopped to help a driver who had been involved in another crash, when a pickup driving on the highway swerved around his parked vehicle and struck him.
Officials are shown at the scene where Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy John Hampton Coddou was struck by a vehicle while assisting at a crash scene on the Grand Parkway at Cumberland Ridge Drive Tuesday, April 23, 2024, in Cypress.

Coddou was the first sheriff’s deputy to be killed in the line of duty since 2022.
Speaking about Coddou after the crash, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it was in character for Coddou, a violent-crimes investigator, to have pulled over instead of leaving the job to a different person.
“It wasn’t surprising that he stopped to help,” Gonzalez said. “He saw community members in need.”
John Hampton Coddou III was born and raised in Houston.
After high school, he joined the Army, where he served as a military policeman at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas.
In 2003, Coddou joined the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, first as a detention officer, then as a patrol deputy starting in 2005. He patrolled Harris County’s west side, including the Katy area, until he became an investigator in 2019.
As a deputy, Coddou was known as a caring person and mentor with a “gift for gab” and a talent for building relationships.
“He was that person that went over and beyond,” said Joey Abeid, a sheriff’s deputy investigator who worked with Coddou in their patrol days.
He showed this again after a major storm that had taken down a power line at Barker-Cypress and Clay.
The storm was backing up traffic for a mile, said sheriff's Lt. Mike Nguyen, who patrolled the west side of the county with Coddou.
Coddou called Nguyen to come over and help drag the power line out of the way.

“I said ‘That’s crazy,’” Nguyen said. “But that’s the kind of guy he was. He wanted to make sure that if you were a victim, that you were taken care of, that you got the proper report filed to get your case resolved. If something was in a roadway, he wanted to make sure that things were cleared out. So you're not just sitting there needlessly, so you can get to where you're going.”
Coddou was known to sometimes patrol his area on a bicycle, his colleagues said.
He earned the nickname “The General” from some of his friends, from the way he would call out orders on radio.
When he became an investigator in 2019, first in the robbery division and then in violent crimes, he was known to throw himself into his cases.
“He loved this type of work,” said Ryan Hilz, a fellow deputy investigator. “John liked to go and dig. The hunt for the person who did it, getting what he needed to find the people responsible for these types of foul offenses, he just ate it up.”
The funeral procession for Sheriffs Deputy John Coddou passes between Shepherd and T.C. Jester, heading west on I-10 on Thursday, April 25, 2024, in Houston.
Outside of work, Coddou was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed gardening, cooking and hosting his friends and family, his mother said.
Even in his hobbies, Coddou looked out for others, Hilz said.
On their frequent hunting trips, Coddou was the early packer, having his gear ready a week before others had even started.
“He wanted to know everybody else that was going to be there, because he was packing stuff to make sure everybody else had stuff,” Hilz said. “He would come with already cooked meals. He planned out everything.”
When they reached their campsite, Coddou was also known for pulling out his hunting trip specialty: taco soup.
Coddou is survived by his wife, Kathleen, with whom he had just celebrated his 11th wedding anniversary.
He is also survived by his mother and stepfather, Jim Harshfield; a sister, Michelle Coddou Kyzar, and her family; and a brother, Chris Harshfield.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Hampton Coddou Jr.
Coddou’s body was escorted Thursday morning from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Science to a funeral home in Katy.
A three-minute-long parade of police vehicles crossed Houston, shutting down major roads as it went by.
Funeral arrangements had not been announced as of Thursday afternoon.

More than three dozen officers killed in line of duty remembered at vigil in Austin
A memorial ceremony was held in Austin on Sunday in honor of 37 officers who were killed in the line of duty.
The annual Texas Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony took place at the Capitol, where Gov. Greg Abbott delivered a Texas Medal of Honor to one member of each fallen officer’s family.
“This Peace Officer Memorial is far more than just a granite monument — it is an eternal reminder of the unsung Texas heroes taken too soon,” said Abbott in a press release. “In Texas, we support our law enforcement officers, especially those whose bravery and valor led to the ultimate sacrifice.”
Various police agencies from across the Lone Star State participated in the ceremony and candlelight vigil, with representatives from the police departments of Plano and Mansfield in attendance.
Tumblr media
“We typically have about a thousand people,” Gretchen Grigsby, director of government relations for the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, told Fox 7 Austin. “They are representatives from survivor groups, those that have been impacted by a line of duty death themselves, law enforcement officers from across that state, as well as the public.”
The families of fallen peace officers were also invited to put red roses on the wreaths hung in remembrance of their loved ones.
The memorial honors those who served in the state as far back as the late 19th century.
Abbott emphasized the historical continuity between the peace officers of today and those of the past while expressing gratitude for their steadfast work in the face of adversity.
“It is easy to forget that this land we stand on was once the Wild West. Peace officers who serve today follow the same rich tradition of famous Texas lawmen who helped tame the Wild West,” he said. “As we all well know, there are still dangers, and it still takes brave men and women to face those dangers every day,” he said. “Without their hard work and dedication, justice would go undone. We are eternally grateful for the valor of those heroes who face danger, fight for justice, and keep Texas safe.”
Eleven law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in Texas last year, and five have died so far in 2024, according to data from the Officer Down Memorial Page.
Nationwide, there have been 54 deaths of peace officers this year and 137 last year.
Murder charges approved in fatal shooting of CPD Officer Luis Huesca
A first-degree murder charge was approved by Cook County prosecutors Thursday in the fatal April shooting of off-duty Chicago police officer Luis Huesca.
Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office said in a statement Thursday that 22-year-old Xavier Tate Jr. was charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing Huesca on April 21 near the officer’s Gage Park home.
Tate is scheduled to make his first court appearance Friday.
“While we take this critical step, we will continue to gather and analyze further evidence,” Foxx said in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Officer Huesca and recognize the courage of all our officers. We remain steadfast in our pursuit to ensure that justice is served for Officer Huesca and the city he served.”
Tate was taken into custody Wednesday in west suburban Glendale Heights, police previously said.
A CPD source said the arresting officers used Huesca’s handcuffs to arrest Tate.
Authorities previously announced a combined $100,000 reward for public information leading to Tate’s arrest and conviction.
Cook County court records show Tate was arrested last March in south suburban Olympia Fields and charged with criminal trespass to a residence.
That case remains pending.
Court records from Kane County, meanwhile, show Tate was arrested in February and charged with obstructing a police officer.
He was also arrested in 2023 and charged with obstruction, and both those cases remain active, records show.
In the last five years, Tate has been cited 10 times for alleged traffic violations in Kane County.
Huesca, a six-year veteran of CPD, was shot multiple times in the 3100 block of West 56th Street while off-duty but in uniform early on April 21.
His gun and vehicle were also taken at the scene of the shooting but were later recovered.
Officers last week arrested a relative of Tate’s who allegedly had come to possess Huesca’s gun.
That man, arrested in Morgan Park, now faces a charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, court records show.
On what would’ve been Huesca’s 31st birthday last week, the CPD announced that the officer died in the line of duty, entitling his family to survivors’ death benefits.
At his funeral Monday, Huesca was remembered as “an exceptional person with courage, bravery, humility and pride in your work.”

Share Ai Earn Review: My Recommendation
Share Ai Earn claims of AI-powered, effortless income generation raise significant red flags. The lack of transparency, unrealistic earning promises, and focus on sharing rather than value creation make it a risky proposition. Before investing any time or money, it’s crucial to thoroughly research any online money-making opportunity. Consider exploring legitimate alternatives that require effort and skill development but offer a more sustainable path to earning income online.

How To Make Money with Domain Parking in 2024
As we approach 2024, the digital landscape is evolving dizzyingly. Domain parking is still a promising path in the age of online entrepreneurship. Imagine producing passive income simply by owning and effectively using internet real estate—an idea that may appear futuristic but is achievable. In this post, we'll look at domain name parking in 2024 and how you can take advantage of this unique way to make money while you sleep.
Tumblr media
What does "parked domain" mean?
There is something called a parked domain, which is a registered domain name that is not linked to an online service like running a website or email. That is, it is a domain name that was bought but needs to be used right now. It is "parked" until it is needed again.
The vast majority of names we know lead to a web page. Most of the time, parked names lead to a simple "parked domain" page, a "but this domain" page, an ad page, or no web page at all. In the second case, your computer will show you an error message like this:
Another more important domain name can send people to the same web page as a parked domain. In this case, the parked domain is called an "alias domain" for the main domain.
Why do you need a parked domain?
Why have a name if it's not being used for anything? It turns out there are several good reasons to keep at least one parked domain, and these are:
In order to keep a valuable domain name safe
A good domain name is hard to find and worth a lot of money. Anyone who has tried to get one for their website has probably found that the one they really wanted has already been bought, and they will have to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars to get it.
Because of this, a lot of people buy a domain name early on when they start a new business, even before they start building their website, so they can only sell it after a while. Because a good domain name is so important, it's worth the money to keep the parked domain until your site is ready to go live.
To send people to the same website as the main domain
As was already said, a parked domain can be used as a backup for a main domain. That's right, this parked domain has the same website as the main domain and points to the same IP address.
A lot of the time, businesses buy various parked domains with names that sound like their main domain, like a website with the main domain product.com. They could also sign up for other names, such as
Visit getproduct.com or go to product.org
The website product.co
Then, these sites are made to look like product.com.
People who forget or type the primary address will be sent to the right website using this method. Another use is for marketing efforts; an alias like getproduct.com can be a clever way to get the word out.
Lastly, reserving nicknames keeps people from cybersquatting. Cybersquatting is when someone buys domain names that are variations on a business's main domain name and then tries to sell them back to the business. People who take over a domain can do whatever they want with it until you buy it back. This could hurt the trustworthiness of your brand. This is less likely to happen to you if you buy several similar domains at once and link them to your site.
To Get a Domain Sale
People and businesses make money by buying domains for cheap and then selling them for a profit later on. This is because domains are very valuable. For now, the name stays "parked." This could be the reason why the domain name you want has already been taken.
To Hold on to a Domain Before It Expires
Finally, you can park a domain name until it expires if you no longer want to use it on your site. This will disconnect the domain name from your site's IP address. This stops other websites from using the name until the time you own it is up.
How to Put a Domain in Park
It's the same process to park a domain as it is to secure a regular domain, whether you want to save it for later use or use it as an alias.
First, see if the name you want to buy is actually for sale. The easiest way to do this is to type the name into the address bar of your browser. If the domain name doesn't point to a website, the name may be free, or it may already be "parked."
The next step that would be good is to do a WHOIS search. You can use the ICANN research tool to find out if a domain is owned, who owns it, and other information that could be useful if you want to buy someone else's domain.
Choose a different name and domain extension (like .org, .net, .co, or .io) if the one you want has already been taken. If not, buy the name from the domain registrar of your choice.
That's all there is to it! If you just want to hold on to the name for now, you can park it until you renew your domain ownership. You can connect the name to your live website when you're ready.
Ways Domain Parking Can Help You Make Money
How to Find Expired Domains: It might take a while because there are so many expired names. But it's important to do your homework and find a good one, especially with so many visitors. You can use the tools at ExpiredDomains.net to find a good expired name.
Domains that fit a niche: It will help people who want to buy your domain and are willing to pay more. You can use filters in tools like PBN Lab, DomCop, Domain Hunter Gatherer, and more to find the best domains for your area. With these filters, you can pick the keywords, characters, domain extensions, and other things you think are best for your area. These tools also give you many other useful details that can help you determine the site's quality, how much traffic it gets, its backlink profile, and other things.
Getting a domain name: This happens after the domain has been found and analyzed. You need to buy the name and register it with a domain registrar once you've picked out the one you want and ensured it's free. You can't own a domain because you don't buy it. Instead, you lease it from the domain provider and pay a yearly fee.
How to Choose the Best Domain Parking Company: Itcan be hard. The best place to park your domain name is with a company that meets your needs and charges low annual fees. Some companies allow visitors from other countries, some can help you find expired domains, and some offer the Zero-Click Model. So, look at what each company offers before making a choice.
Parking for the domain: Several ways are possible, and the ease of the process changes based on how many names you have. However, the best and quickest way to park your domains, no matter how many you have, is to copy and paste your sponsor's HTML code using the information given.
Staying away from sites that are on a blocklist: It will help you save time and money. Before you choose a name, make sure to see if it's on Google's list of blocked domains to avoid problems in the future. You can use tools like DotCom-Tools, MXToolBox: Blacklists, SpamHaus, and more to find out if your name is on a list of blocked domains.
Checking out the domain means:  This will help you test the flow after purchasing it. If you're unhappy with how much traffic your name gets in the time you set, you can get a full or partial refund. People don't do this as often as they used to, but some still do it.
Getting rid of a parked domain: Domain name parking is often thought of as short-term, so this is what people do. Some companies that park your domain let you put "domain for sale" text on your domain's home page so people will know you're selling it. There are also sales where you can sell your parked domains.
Conclusion
Domain name parking will remain profitable for anybody trying to generate money online in 2024. Domain investors can increase their profit potential by optimizing keywords and targeting advertising. Maintaining current on industry developments and consumer demands is critical for staying ahead of the competition. As technology advances, new options for domain parking innovation may emerge, opening additional revenue streams. It would help if you were committed and adaptable to compete in the ever-changing domain parking landscape. Begin researching your alternatives today and watch your profits skyrocket!
