Role of Hanako-kun ・Ogata Megumi & Role of Nene・Kito Akari [Last name, First name]
(Ogata Megumi. Representative of Breathe Arts. Performances: Ikari Shinji from “Transforming Bullet Train Robot Shinkalion”, and others.)
(Kito Akari. Affiliate of PRO・FIT [Inc.]. Performances: Nezuko from “Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer)”, Himesska Nao from “Wataten!: An Angel Flew Down to Me”, and others.)
Hanako-kun, Nene, and Kou are disjointed. Even still, they are strangely well-balanced.
Ogata Megumi-san, who plays 3 roles, and Kito Akari, who plays the worried maiden Nene, look back on the 9th episode.
Nene can’t interfere with Hanako-kun, Amane, and Tsukasa’s relationship.
(Right to Left)
Hanako-kun, Nene, and Kou’s interactions are the spice of the story, but how do Ogata-san and Kito-san feel about it?
Ogata: They’re just like an assistant and servant? They might be friends, but they also might not be… A “Let’s fight something together!” kind of team feeling, perhaps.
Kito: It certainly seems like everyone is disjointed.
Ogata: Yes, disjointed! So I think as a whole their relationship has a nice balance, albeit a strange one.
What do you two think is Kou’s charm?
Ogata: He’s like a cute puppy (Lol).
Kito: (Lol). I also started thinking more about it after Chiba (Shoya)-kun’s performance. At another interview, I was asked “Between Nene and Kou, who do you think is the real heroine?”. Of course, I thought it was Nene, but I can still see that he’s a cute kid.
Conversely, the older brother, Teru, is the student council president, and he creates a calm atmosphere. If you were a high school student, would you be more attracted to Kou or Teru?
Kito: As I’m attracted to the older type, it’d be Teru-kun.
Ogata: I like both of them… Hmm… (Lol).
Speaking of Kou, the scene where he makes donuts with Nene made your heart pound, right?
Kito: It was a scene that really made my heart pound. Though he acts like a poor cook, he does all of the housework at home. How cool of him.
Ogata: Right? That’s a plus for me. Earlier, I said “I like both of them…” but maybe Kou is the better one. I mean, a man like Teru who can’t cook but arrogantly eats the food is no good (Lol). When it comes to marriage, it’s gotta be Kou!
But regrettably, it seems Nene doesn't think that way about Kou.
Ogata: Doesn’t Nene have a radar for good-for-nothing men?
Kito: (Lol). Nene’s a dreamer, it can’t be helped.
From here on, we'll be asking questions about each of the episodes. Please tell us your thoughts on Hanako-kun’s and Nene’s meeting from the first and second episode.
Kito: Nene-chan still didn’t really understand Hanako-kun yet, so there were times where she was manipulated by him. I profoundly remember a scene where Nene gets a lecture from Hanako-kun about romance.
Ogata: Seriously, what an unhelpful guy (Lol).
Kito: It’s true! (Lol) Also, when Nene and Hanako-kun were in the vegetable garden talking about “Radish Legs,” I had fun doing the voice for the radish.
Ogata: That happened, didn’t it!
Was there any acting direction for radish legs?
Kito: There was. At first, I used a high-pitched voice. Afterwards, I was told “Please use a more radish-like, plump voice.” But the TV broadcast ended up using the high-pitched voice (Lol).
In episodes 3-4 “The Misaki Stairs,” Nene thinks Hanako-kun likes her, and misunderstood him in the fifth episode. What are your thoughts on that?
Kito: Yukana-san’s performance as Yako in The Misaki Stairs was amazing. Listening to Fox Yako’s voice was a real joy in particular.
Ogata: Yukana-san is like an eternally youthful apparition herself. As expected of Yukana (Lol).
Kito: I thought Episode 5 was straight out of Shoujo manga. If a boy acts like Hanako-kun did, a girl’s bound to misunderstand. I think Hanako-kun’s a natural at seducing girls. (Lol).
Ogata: He wasn’t conscious of his conduct and thought nothing of it. In episode 1, he says “I’ll have you pay me back with your body.”, but all he means is that he wanted an assistant to work for him. He didn’t mean anything bad. That’s why he meekly apologized with “I’m sorry” when he saw Nene crying. However, he isn’t always unintentional. I think he definitely knows the implications of what a “kokeshi” is (Lol). Since Hanako-kun also died when he was in middle school, his speech might be afflicted by “chuunibyou”, or middle school syndrome.
Kito: Nene always insists that Hanako-kun isn’t her type, so I think they’re the same in that regard.
Ogata: Nene is a young girl that’s in love with love itself, but she gives up quickly (Lol). Even while talking about how cool (Hyuuga) Natsuhiko-senpai was, when he got taken by the supernatural on the other side of the door, she ruthlessly cut in with “I’ve got a feeling he’ll be fine” (Lol).
Both the search for Hanako-kun’s secret in “The 4PM Bookstacks” and the appearance of Hanako’s look-alike, Tsukasa, really progressed the story quickly in Episodes 6-7.
Ogata: From then on, I started voicing Hanako-kun, Amane, and Tsukasa. I’m not sure if I should say I voice two roles, or if it’s better to say I voice three… nevertheless, when the time comes, I follow my feelings while acting each character.
Kito: Even now, the heavy scenes have been appearing little by little, but the story of Amane and Tsuchigomori-sensei’s past hit deep. His past is so painful...
Kitou-san, what are your feelings about Hanako-kun/Amane’s and Tsukasa’s relationship?
Kito: Even Nene can’t seem to interfere in their relationship. After she learned of Hanako-kun’s past, Nene herself could feel the distance.
Ogata: Nene usually disregards the distance between herself and other people and intrudes, but this time she read the atmosphere, which is impressive. But when she said “But this is worse than I thought! It's too heavy! It's too much trouble!!” it showed how she really felt.
Kito: Well, it is too heavy! (Lol).
It seems that from Episode 8 and on, Tsukasa, Sakura, and Natsuhiko go all out and start to make their move.
Kito: They’re a trio just like the main characters, but they’re a completely different type. More mature, I think.
Ogata: Sakura’s legs are also different from Nene’s. They’re very alluring.
Kito: Truly. Still, Nene found mutual understanding with her adversary Sakura. I loved how Nene lowered her defenses during their girls’ talk. (Lol).
Do you have any other scenes you liked?
Ogata: I enjoyed Episode 9, where I got to act with the voice actors of the apparitions that appeared beyond the doors. It was fun.
Kito: If we’re talking about Episode 9, it was entertaining how useless Natushiko-senpai was, I loved it. It made me laugh in the manga, but having it voiced powered up the scene's entertainment value (Lol).
Ogata: Deplorable people = Takahiro Mizushima [Natsuhiko’s VA]. Ah, I mean it in that his acting is skillful, of course. (Lol)
Kito: I also liked when Hanako was confronted by Tsukasa in Episode 7 and looked like he was incapable of saying anything. Even now, I can’t forget Hanako-kun’s dejected facial expression. It was deeply moving.
Please leave a message to readers who are excited for Episode 10 and onwards.
Ogata: Episode 10 is actually being dubbed after this, so whatever kind of development awaits us, we, like the viewers, are looking forward to it.
Kito: I have no doubt that it’ll be entertaining. Please watch the rest of the Hanako-kun cast’s journey.
