The American who killed the panamenian protesters and other reasons why I dislike American culture
This Tuesday, November 7 some teacher unions and indigenous collectives were protesting closing of the railroads because of the mining contract and the corruption, a man called Kenneth Darlington killed 2 of the protesters who were unarmed. This man had trouble with the law years prior. In 2005, he was detained for the illegal possession of arms. Of course, because anything can be bought in Panama he was pardoned from all charges.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The man is a zonian American. And what is a zonian? Well, zonians were the Americans who grew up inside the canal zone. Which meant they lived inside the American settlement that managed the Panama Canal. Most of the Americans who lived there were from the south of the US, and only spoke english. Most of them grew up isolated from Panamanian society and disconnected from all the problems Panama was dealing with their precedence on Panamanian land.
Tumblr media
They even implemented some of their ways, like segregation of blacks and whites in some of their canal zone areas. They loved how they lived in Panama because they had so many benefits that the common Americans living in the US didn't had. Like, free taxes, good housing, good salary, and long vacations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of those Zonians got back to the US and most of them mourned the life they had in Panama. So, as you can imagine, now being American retirees some came back to live in Panama. Some of them never left and stayed in the Albrook area, trying to adapt to the changes while also holding some of those old American ideals from the South.
As you know from my older posts, Panama is currently dealing with a corruption crisis that has to do more than just random people fighting for nature preservation. This crisis that started in October made some far-leftist unions manifest, some taking advantage of the situation and others with other concerns regarding their community. Some people support their methods of protests of closing railroads and some people criticize it because of how it's leaving some provinces without access to resources.
Regardless of the anger of being trapped in traffic because of the protests no one absolutely no one has the right to kill another individual.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, going to the title of this post it may look like someone who hates Americans in general which is not entirely like that. But, on my end, from what I have seen on how Americans live, with college/university debt, a health system with absurd prices and their individualistic culture. As someone who has interacted with all kinds of Americans visiting Panama, I always felt some disdain for how they think their ways of living apply the same in a different country, in this case, them visiting Panama. Don't get me wrong, I have met nice Americans as well, but also someone's who come across as entitled.
It was a surprise of mine to see today, Wednesday 8 a post from the New York Post talking about the event and to my surprise, the amount of American accounts commenting distasteful things without even asking a Panamanian about the issue or doing some research. It just confirms a bit more of my judgment of how they live in a bubble, thinking their ways apply to the rest of the world. Then again I know some Americans don't think in such ways, but sadly I have seen some of this kind of behaviour in both extremes of the left and the right. Trying to relate to an issue by applying some of their American mindset to it. And what I mean by that is just their society rules, what is ok and not ok in their culture and even their societal issues.
I don't think you need to be from another country to understand why killing is bad, especially if a group is unarmed and not actively attacking you. And celebrating it just tells me the lack of character and ethics of that individual.

ARC Review of Out of Office by A.H. Cunningham
Tumblr media
Rating: 4.25/5 Heat Level: 3.75/5 Publication Date: April 23rd
Premise:
Genevieve is a high-powered hospitality executive intent on getting a promotion. Before she does, she decides to throw caution to the wind and embark on a vacation fling with Adrián, her driver in Panama. Two weeks later, neither of them are ready to end what they have.
My review:
This is a sensual, stunningly emotional read that touches on so many realistic adult issues while never sacrificing the romance. Genevieve and Adrián are in their thirties; Genevieve is a consummate career woman and you really understand where her drive to succeed comes from. Adrián on the other hand suffered from burnout some years prior and is now focusing on his family and their small hotel in Panama. Gen is endearingly uptight and type-A (her alternate persona is "Hot Girl Gen which... is so real of her), Adrián is super smooth and super laid-back, and they're technically in opposite places life-wise, so how do they make this work?
The answer is a lot of communication, but let me preface this by saying this doesn't make the book boring or *too real*. Instead, what you do get is two people who are instantly attracted to each other (and the chemistry is THERE right off the bat, and it's honestly kind of insane), but they need to make some tough choices when it comes to sustaining their relationship— What do they compromise on? What do they sacrifice? And this becomes even more relevant when their personal and professional lives collide and Genevieve's ability to do her job hinges on her successfully headhunting Adrián. As a woman of color, I really appreciated the nuanced way the author handled Gen's career, as well as a host of other topics like Adrián's bisexuality, the fact that Adrián isn't traditionally as "successful" as Gen career-wise (something you still don't see in a lot of romance novels), and Genevieve and Adrián's drive to revitalize small communities like Adrián's rather then outright gentrify them.
Also, the way A.H. Cunningham described the setting in places like Aguimar in Panama? Gorgeous. And love and care with which she wrote Afro-Panamanian culture really comes across.
The sex:
My big takeaway here is that the closer Gen and Adrian grew, the hotter the sex acts got. The initial sex scenes very sensual and more focused on building this emotional connection between them, and making them realize they were irreplaceable in each others' lives despite this ostensibly being a vacation fling. But once they found some semblance of permanence with one another, I feel like all bets were off. I loved how toys, masturbation, and video sex were incorporated into the story later (which makes sense since a part of their relationship is long-distance!), and Adrián had a strong "let me take care of you" vibe during sex which was never patronizing, but very hot. Also, Gen does, in fact, rim him during a blowjob, something I pleasantly surprised by.
Overall:
This is the second Harlequin Afterglow book I'm reviewing after The Boyfriend Subscription, and I've really enjoyed both of them. They've both been far more diverse than most of the contemporary romances I'm seeing out there, they're romantic, they have great sex scenes. I'd strongly recommend Out Of Office to anyone looking for a grown-up sexy kinda read.
Thank you to Harlequin and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review.

LA-1; Panama
The first place I arrived at was Panama, and wow is that place beautiful. The country stretches out from Costa Rica to Colombia, keeping a distinguished separation between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Panama’s population is a substantial 3.8 million people (while their capital Panama city only has a little over 475,000 people), although they do get lots of vacation visits from people all over the world. For some people it may be hard to communicate with the indigenous people of Panama because most of them only speak Spanish, although there are quite a few people that also know English. Another good thing about Panama being inclusive, is that they take U.S. dollars as well as Balboa.
Tumblr media
When I got to Panama I immediately wanted to go get some traditional Panamanian food. The national dish of Panama is Sancocho de Gallina, which contains a big piece of chicken with different kinds of vegetables. The dish also has potatoes, yuca, plantains, and corn on the side as well as little spices such as oregano and hot sauce. There is also culantro, which do not confuse it for the regular cilantro that we know about. Culantro has a slightly sweeter and stronger flavor than cilantro. Sancocho can also be eaten as a soup, filling the pot with chicken stock rather than straining it and placing it on a plate. Which I think I would rather try Sancocho as a stew rather than the former.
Tumblr media
After I had something to eat, I went to my airbnb that I had reserved many months before. The apartment complex is in the heart of Panama City with wonderful views of Panama Bay and the city life. The Airbnb I stayed at was very reasonably priced based off how many amenities there were and the pristine furniture filling the intricate layout. The price per night was $197 USD, and they require a two night stay minimum. So after the service and cleaning fees, the price for both nights was a cool $541. If the price seems a bit far-fetched for you, let me tell you that you get what you pay for and even more. This destination contains a free washer and dryer in the unit, a 55” HDTV with the basic streaming services such as HBO Max, Netflix and Amazon Prime. It also includes air conditioning, security cameras, wifi, and a private balcony with seating. The kitchen is full with appliances and silverware as well, including a stainless steel oven/stove, refrigerator/freezer, and even a dishwasher which can be hard to come by. I will post some of the views from the stay because they were absolutely astonishing.
Tumblr media
A fun little fact is that Panama’s official flower is the Dove Orchid, also known as The Flower of the Holy Spirit or Peristeria Elata. The flower originally came to the latin country in the early-mid 1800’s. William J. Hooker named the white flower with the name of Peristeria because the greek meaning of that word is Dove, due to the petals forming to look like the bird. The reason for the eerie name “The Flower of the Holy Spirit’, is that before the flower blooms it looks like a praying monk which is totally understandable like I can totally see it. The flower also only blooms during the early fall months of August and September.

Macaroons versus Monster Trucks
Tumblr media
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities, 1859
Other than the divergence from the myopia of prying apart the isthmus with a sea-level canal Washington also bested its fleur-de-lys counterpart with superior technology. The suite of machinery in America’s inventory had a material effect on the alacrity with which regolith and rock was removed from the bed of the waterway. Mythologized as a Goliath of steam and steel the Bucyrus dragline weighing ninety-five tons weathered the wear and tear of construction for a decade as it bent nature to its will. Sporting a bucket to accommodate five cubic meters of spoil with each bite into the ground and whose efficacy boasted a fivefold increase in productivity versus any French copy the machine expedited work by orders of magnitude (Parker 2009: 464). An army of these giants sitting atop rail tracks led the mechanized assault on the 50-mile trench together with a phalanx of trains in the vicinity of 160 each day which hauled the muck out to build the Gatun Dam. This grist sourced from the dig impounded an artificial lake that would later feed the lock system with a steady supply of water to make the Canal’s passage uninhibited. The bespoke Bucyrus made uniquely for this project pared down labour-intensity when the behemoth manipulated 4,800 cubic yards of material each day bereft of protracted downtime (Ryckman 2018).
Tumblr media
Seven shovels of earth filled a rail car in under ninety seconds or forty-five minutes for a whole train whereby locomotives were kept in perpetual motion when each outbound trip greeted an inbound one (Rogers and Magura 2018). Such continuous kinetic energy militated against any gridlock which might cripple the venture’s lead time. This cavalcade of twenty buckets on four wheels that vacated ground zero took two hours to complete a circuit between the dumpsite and worksite (Giroux 2014). As the railroad expanded piecemeal into the inhospitable terrain a slight gradient always exploited gravity to help the departure of trains laden with rock and rubble. This innovation equally allowed for drainage to keep the roadbed dry for the maze of tracks crisscrossing the Panamanian jungle. Where the French most acutely erred was in their logistics which saw a mismatch between the mounds of earth removed and their disposal. By contrast Chief Engineer John Stevens devised 450 miles of railway akin to a Jackson Pollock painting of lines zigzagging the geography to move dirt apace with the brisk clip at which it was dug (Keller 1983). Automobiles were alien to this world as man and material moved exclusively by the monopoly of rail. A robust network for egressing detritus from the Canal was not an afterthought this time around.
Tumblr media
Over the life of the project seventy-seven Bucyrus and twenty-four Marion shovels laboured tirelessly on cleaving a path through the wilds of Panama. In tow with these metal workhorses were track-shifters that exhumed old rail and plopped it down anew as the ensemble of men and machines invaded deeper into the thicket of jungle. The genius of plying trains this way to scaffold the Panama Canal lay in the relentless momentum when a dozen men partook in the migration of track with haste versus the six hundred under past French fiat. Such innovation crimped labour and time to maximize productivity as idleness was anathema to progress. The systematic use of rail in the supply chain equally gave vent to a nocturnal character where by day the drums of industry boomed and by night a bouquet of workers commuted onsite and tended to the machines for repair and restock of coal. Things were always astir and never asleep. The lion’s share of controlled demolition also coincided the evening hours or midday breaks when the flight of personnel transformed worksites into a tabula rasa for Dupont dynamite. Thirty-six years after Alfred Nobel unlocked the power of nitroglycerine this substance evolved into the sine quo non of operations insofar as sixty-one million pounds of it blasted asunder the isthmus (McCullough 1977).
The Canal emblematized the jewel of empire when the might of industry descended upon this barren strip of land. As America rode the crest of the Industrial Revolution amidst the heyday of the Gilded Age with mechanical juggernauts of great calibre the project hurried along in earnest. The Cartesian method of excavation proceeding in lockstep with disposal across a constellation of fixed capital was the single most salient innovation. Pneumatic drills amongst this lot further guaranteed time was a commodity well spent which the economies of $22 million below final budget estimates evidenced (Rogers 2014). Compressed air plants of vast dimensions attended to these rigs whose boreholes at a maximum depth of fifty feet accommodated strings of dynamite. Over 725 of these contraptions perforated the landscape to fracture stubborn rock. Both churn and well drills powered by coal counted themselves amongst the company of tools used along the route as well (Giroux 2014). A choreography of diggers, blasters and haulers thereby manifested into the mainstay of this gorge linking the Atlantic and Pacific. For a measure of perspective more explosives found use in the throes of this project than the sum from America’s wars hitherto. The efficiency wrought by dynamite was made famous in the Culebra Cut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the Americans just as it was for the French this nine-mile stretch of dirt hung the Sword of Damocles over the Canal’s prospects. A quarter of expenses or $90m financed this chapter of excavation alone (Rogers 2014). Heavy rains waterlogged the site which landslides compounded by engulfing the lowest-hanging fruit of equipment too ponderous to escape. What made this tranche of work most daunting was the heterogeneity of soil. The unstable geology of soft shale coupled with sandstone at the Canal’s highest elevation wrought havoc on the exigency to remove 96 million cubic yards of material from the Continental Divide. In fact this very conundrum which defeated the French a decade prior would spur the creation of the Bucyrus steam shovel in its 95-ton and 105-ton incarnations as a sui generis remedy to the spectre of failure. Bref the Americans simply engineered the problem away. Whereas Paris sought to cross the isthmus with a minimal amount of digging the buccaneers in Washington set upon doing the most. The former being partial to minimalism and the latter plumping for maximalism evokes the popular stereotype of the disparity in preferences for either country: a dichotomy of macaroons and monster trucks. Facts do countenance this bon mot since France cleared 78 million cubic yards versus the 246 million by the Yankees (Herndon 1977).

I went home last week to spend time with my family, both as a general vacation and to be there for my mom’s surgery (she’s fine!), and while I was there I found my bracelet that I got while visiting the Naso people in Panama a few years back. Super neat little bracelet and especially since I love brown so much the fact that the base color is an orangey-brown caught my eye instantly. There’s currently a little over 3,000 of their people and the native language (Teribe) has been slowly dying (less than 2,000 speakers remained when I was there), but they’ve been making efforts to continue passing it on to their children and have been met with relative success recently; so their efforts to continue their culture are bearing fruit! They also, I’m fairly certain, were successful in getting their land recognized as a comarca a few years back! (Getting them recognized as an independent administrative district from the surrounding Panamanians, giving them additional rights and governance power.)
They even taught the group of us that were there a few words when we asked, unfortunately I’m not sure where I put my notes for it but I dug up a recording of myself saying the 8 words I was taught which I’ll put down below. I put what each words means in English and my best attempt at remembering how it’s written lol (uses Spanish phonetics). The only one I’m 100% sure of is arrwó which means ‘macaw’. If anyone else can take a better shot at transcribing what I’m saying please do so 😭
The bracelet’s handmade of course, and they were selling lots of other handicrafts as well! I know I bought a peccary tooth necklace that’s somewhere at the house, I’ll try and find it when I go back home for Christmas. They also host visitors every now and then, and I can’t find the link to their site right now but I’ll ask my old prof who headed the trip. It was super cool to meet them and hear about their history, and I’m very thankful they were willing to host us and share their culture with us for a few days. :)

Provocations or threats
Unpleasant noises and nuisances
Nuisance and damage caused by domestic animals or loose animals
Obstruction of public roads
Disturbance of the quiet enjoyment of the property

Violation of municipal regulations
Justices of the Peace may also hear civil disputes in the Republic of Panama. A justice of the peace is usually a qualified attorney, however, it is not mandatory to be licensed as an attorney to be a justice of the peace in Panama. Certainly, justices of the peace receive special training to be able to perform their duties. Only Panamanian citizens can be justices of the peace in Panama.
It is important to note that a justice of the peace can provisionally order the following measures:
Restraining order
Order the temporary suspension of activities and works related to neighborhood conflicts.
Evictions order
Protection order
Periodic appearances before the Justice of the Peace
Temporary detention for up to 48 hours
Seizure of firearms and suspension of gun permit or license in Panama
Panamanian Justices of the Peace may also impose the following sanctions:
Verbal warnings

Fines of up to $1,000.00 USD
Reparation of the damage caused or compensation
Regarding domestic violence cases, the justice of the peace may:
Order the alleged aggressor to vacate the home that he/she shares with the victim for the duration of the proceedings
Order the alleged aggressor to wear an electronic monitoring device.
On the other hand, citizens of Panama and foreigners can request that a Justice of the Peace issue a proof of address or a certificate of good behavior. These kinds of documents can be used locally or overseas for different purposes. Also, said documents can be apostilled or legalized for use abroad.

From Reggae to Reggaeton: The origins of El Género Pt.2 (SPOILER ALERT)
Last week we explored how reggae and dance hall blew up in Panama after the “Canal Zone” was returned to the country in 1973 and how this led to the credited originators of reggae en español, Renato, Reggae Sam, and Frankito AKA El General.
In this post, I hope to put together the pieces that form Reggaeton as a genre, but I may not get to it all so at the very least I hope to map out how they came together and where.
So, it’s 1985, and Renato, Reggae Sam, and Frankito have pioneered and popularized Panamanian Dance Hall and Reggae, starting a localized boom in the Spanish-speaking world.
However, Frankito earned a scholarship to study business administration in New York. With the support and encouragement of his friends, he left for Brooklyn where his mom was already living. Knees deep in three jobs he had little time for music for while but eventually fell into the much richer and long-standing dance hall scene in NY whose Spanish-language sector was only just budding. Freestyling at underground dance hall parties throughout is where he adopted the name and persona El General.
In 1990, Michael McDonald, a studio owner, and reggae producer took El General into the studio when he saw a growing interest in the Latin community in dance hall and reggae. He figured it would be smart to cater to that audience and had El General cover Little Lenny’s Punnany Tegereg in Spanish.
The genre blew up all over Latin nations and diasporas, but especially in Puerto Rico where hip hop had been trending since the mid-80s.
Thanks to the back-and-forth migratory patterns of the Puerto Rican diaspora, music sharing was inevitable, and rhythms and sounds migrated as often as we did. Primos would bring all the trends to Puerto Rico with them when they stayed over the Summer vacation, while others brought it back from NY after their Summer in the States.
Around the time El General was just stepping off the plane in NY, two guys who’d come to be, debatably the first big names in Spanish-language Rap, Vico C and DJ Negro. They essentially did the same thing that Renato, Reggae Sam, and Frankito did for Reggae en español for rap: after experimenting on cassette tapes and observing the musical wave of the moment, they saw a demand to fulfill for those who vibed with the beats but not the lyrics, due to the language barrier.
After concert promoter, Jorge Orqueño booked them to open for Public Enemy, and the popularity of their mixtape, La Recta Final, Vico C and DJ Negro had pioneered a new aspiration for kids de los caserillos (from the projects). They rapped about real-life issues in the hood and lots of young people could identify.
Ivy Queen, the host of the podcast that this retelling is from, said (paraphrasing) ‘it was like going from black and white to seeing the picture in full color’.
When Vico C and DJ Negro split in 1991, still at the height of their popularity, the reggae/dance hall craze was still fresh.
In order to guarantee success independently and on his own terms, DJ Negro opened a club in La Perla, a caserillo in San Juan, Puerto Rico: The Noise.
Here, following in tradition, he offered freestyling opportunities to anybody who could rap over hip hop or dance hall, inviting people from PR to NY to Panama. With word spreading and its popularity growing, The Noise became the place to want to make your debut, to see if you have what it takes.
With the pressure of an audience instructed to throw drinks and boo whoever wasn’t good off the stage, and one of the biggest names of Spanish-language rap scrutinizing them, hopeful artists would get on stage and rap over a mixtape interchanging between popular reggae and dance hall rhythms and hip-hop beats.
I think I will cut this here, as I promised, at the crossroads where the two genres cohabited the same venue and started to marry.
I’ll continue this ‘til the end of its origins, the birth of reggaeton as its own genre.

Navigating Panama Visa Requirements for Indian Citizens: A Comprehensive Guide
Dreaming of exploring the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture of Panama? If you're an Indian citizen, understanding the intricacies of obtaining a visa is crucial for a smooth and hassle-free journey. Panama, with its rich biodiversity, bustling cities, and thriving economy, is an enticing destination for travelers worldwide. However, before you embark on your adventure, it's essential to familiarize yourself with Panama visa requirements, especially tailored for Indian passport holders.
Understanding Panama Visa Options for Indian Citizens
Tourist Visa:
For Indian citizens planning a leisure trip to Panama, obtaining a tourist visa is typically the first step. The process involves submitting necessary documents, including a valid passport, proof of accommodation, return flight tickets, and financial statements demonstrating sufficient funds to cover your stay. The tourist visa allows for a specified duration of stay, usually up to 90 days, within a six-month period.
Business Visa:
If your visit to Panama is for business purposes, such as attending meetings, conferences, or exploring investment opportunities, you'll need to apply for a business visa. Along with standard visa application requirements, you may be asked to provide additional documents, such as an invitation letter from your Panamanian business counterpart or conference organizers.
Student Visa:
Indian students aspiring to pursue higher education in Panama must secure a student visa. This involves obtaining acceptance from a recognized educational institution in Panama and presenting relevant documentation, including academic transcripts, proof of enrollment, and a letter of financial solvency.
Work Visa:
For Indian professionals seeking employment opportunities in Panama, obtaining a work visa is imperative. This process typically involves securing a job offer from a Panamanian employer who will sponsor your visa application. Additionally, you may need to provide evidence of your qualifications and professional credentials.
Renewing Your Panamanian Visa or Passport
If you're already in Panama and your visa is nearing expiration, or if you're a Panamanian passport holder looking to renew your travel document, you'll need to follow specific procedures. The Panamanian embassy or consulate general in India, particularly in cities like Mumbai, serves as the primary point of contact for visa and passport-related inquiries and applications.
Panamanian Passport Renewal:
For Panamanian citizens residing in India, renewing your passport involves submitting an application along with required documents, such as your current passport, identification proof, and passport-size photographs. The consulate general of Panama in Mumbai facilitates the passport renewal process and ensures a seamless experience for applicants.
Conclusion
Navigating Panama visa requirements for Indian citizens may seem daunting at first, but with careful planning and preparation, you can embark on your journey to this beautiful Central American destination with confidence. Whether you're planning a leisurely vacation, pursuing educational opportunities, or exploring business ventures, understanding the visa application process is essential for a seamless travel experience. By staying informed and proactive, you can make your Panama travel aspirations a reality.

Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon
Kremers and Froon arrived in Panama for a six-week vacation on March 15, 2014. They toured Panama for two weeks before arriving in Boquete on March 29 to live with a local family for a month while volunteering with children. On April 1 around 11:00, they went hiking near the clouded forests that surrounded the Baru volcano, on the El Pianista trail, not far from Boquete.
Froon's parents stopped receiving text messages, which both women had been sending to their families daily. On the morning of April 2, Kremers and Froon missed an appointment with a local guide. On April 3, authorities began aerial searches of the forest and local residents began searching. On April 6, the parents of Kremers and Froon arrived in Panama along with police, dog units, and detectives from the Netherlands to conduct a full-scale search of the forests for ten days.
Ten weeks later, on June 14, a local woman turned in Froon's blue backpack, which she said she had found by a riverbank near her village of Alto Romero, in the Bocas del Toro region. She said she was sure it had not been there the day before. The backpack contained two pairs of sunglasses, US$83 in cash, Froon's passport, a water bottle, Froon's camera, two bras, and the women's phones – in good condition.
The women's phones showed that just hours after the beginning of their hike, someone dialed 112 (the international emergency number) and 911 (the emergency number in Panama.)
The first distress call attempt was made by Kremers' iPhone at 16:39 and, shortly after that, another attempt was made from Froon's Samsung Galaxy at 16:51, but none of the calls got through due to lack of reception in the area. None of the subsequent call attempts ever managed to go through, either.
On April 4, Froon's phone battery became exhausted after 05:00 and the phone was never used again. Kremers' iPhone would not make any more calls either but was intermittently turned on to search for reception. Between April 5 and April 11, the iPhone was turned on multiple times but without ever entering the correct PIN code again (either no PIN or a wrong PIN code was entered). On April 11, the phone was turned on at 10:51 and was turned off for the last time at 11:56.
Froon's Canon camera contained photos from April 1 suggesting that the women had taken a trail at the overlook of the Continental Divide and wandered into some wilderness hours before their first attempt to reach 112/911, but with no signs of anything unusual. On April 8, ninety flash photos were taken between 01:00 and 04:00, apparently deep in the jungle and in near-complete darkness. A few photos show that they were possibly near a river or a ravine. Some show a twig with plastic bags and candy wrappers on top of a rock; another shows what looks like toilet paper and a mirror on another rock, and another shows the back of Kremers' head.
Kremers' denim shorts were found atop a rock on the opposite bank of the tributary a few kilometres away from where Froon's backpack had been discovered. A rumour claimed that the shorts were found zipped and neatly folded, but pictures of the shorts, published in 2021, disproved this information. Two months later, closer to where the backpack was discovered, a pelvis and a boot with a foot inside were found. Soon, at least 33 widely scattered bones were discovered along the same river bank. DNA testing confirmed they belonged to Kremers and Froon. Froon's bones still had some skin attached to them, but Kremers' bones appeared to have been bleached. A Panamanian forensic anthropologist later claimed that under magnification "there are no discernible scratches of any kind on the bones, neither of natural nor cultural origin – there are no marks on the bones at all”
