I was a Cat-lady ever since I can remember. My favourite plush toy was a cat, this little grey ball of dirty hair. I had always dreamt of having a cat, moreover – I wished to be one of those myself. Dogs on the other hand – not so much. It’s not only that I didn’t fancy them, I was scared of them. It had something to do with this thing I had seen on TV as a small girl – the shot of a bloodied pavement. Apparently, they said on the news that some kid, a little boy, was bit by a stray dog. The dog bit his neck. I can’t recall whether the kid made it. All I remember was being scared.

Thanks to my pals, soon I was about to be traumatised again. It was summer, the day I got back from my first summer camp on my own. My pals gave me a little cat. It was so cute! So small, thin thing, with big, big eyes and big, big ears! And after a month it appeared my mum was allergic and we had to give the cat away.

Couple of years later I found out, that this allergy of my mum wasn’t exactly because of cat’s hair. It was because of the mess it had made and ripped wallpapers. Nice.

As I got married and left my family house for good, first thing I asked of my newly wedded husband was to get a cat. After a month or two he brought Fibi home. It was so small and cute! We took her to the vet, where we found out that she wasn’t exactly three months old, as my husband had been told. She was only three weeks old! She could not eat by herself and she was lacking her mum’s warmth. She was too small to climb our bed, and I was scared she would fall down during the night. Therefore were putting a hot bottle into her blankets every night to keep her warm. She made it fine and good. Now she’s nine years old. She’s characteristically long and thin, she’s a true cat-lady. And a wild animal. Somehow we succeeded in keeping her cat nature alive. She loves to hunt, and usually I’m her favourite prey…

In the meantime our two daughters were born and then we got a dog, out of sudden. I guess you all know how it happens – that you can actually get a dog out of nowhere. Something like that happened to us. One day we decided the time has come. I was scared to take kids to the shelter to pick a dog, I wasn’t sure if that would be a good idea.

We made it via internet. Some lady sent us a picture of this cute looking guy. He stole my heart truly – all I knew I wanted a small she-dog, with short hair. All I got was not so big, but curiously long dog, with long hair. Well, he was matching our long cat.

The dog was delivered to us. I signed all the papers and the dog was mine. The guy told me that the dog didn’t like to walk, and that I had to carry him home. That seemed strange to me, but I obeyed. It took me two days to decide how to name him. Eventually I picked the name Dopey. Well, it was perfect. It wasn’t long before we realized that Dopey can’t see. He’s absolutely blind. And we are so happy with him.

We don’t know his story. The shelter lady was very vogue about it. The vet presumed Dopey may had had an accident, in which he had lost his sight.

One day I had a little chat with our neighbor. Her dog and ours hate each other. When I told her that Dopey couldn’t see and that was why he was so anxious and nervous around other dogs, she sighed:

-That’s a shame. What a pity you got such a poor lad. When are you giving him away?

I was shocked at her question. No way we are ever going to give him away, especially when it appeared how much he needs us!

We were facing some difficulties, we had some ups and downs with him. First of all the kids were kind of disappointed with his looks. He wasn’t small, cute looking thing with a bow they dreamt of. But now, after they got to know him, they love him.

And we love him. We gave him home, food, warmth. Everything he didn’t have. And what he did in return was so much more than we could have ever presume.

Our marriage was standing on the edge of a knife. Some things happened, some did not. We had a crisis, and there was this one scary moment, when I thought we wouldn’t make it. Then my husband said:

-We have to give Dopey away. We can’t handle him along with our problems. Not now.

I panicked. I didn’t want to part with the dog. Never. And then I realized all those things for which the dog was standing for. Family, love, children, home.

Dopey saved us. We gave him shelter in our house.

He gave us shelter in his true loving heart.
