Title: Catch Me if You Can
Tumblr media
“They’re going to fucking murder us once they find out about this, you know.”
Yeosang effortlessly avoids a stubborn root breaking through the running trail, and matches your pace once more, his feet pounding on the pavement a distinct echo of your own.
“You worry too much.” You puff out, glancing down at your watch, taking note of the time and distance.
Yeosang shoots you a glare, shifting slightly to allow you to follow the curve of the path. “I worry just the right amount, thank you very much.” He retorts back, checking his own watch with a brief downward flick of his eyes. “You, on the contrary, don’t worry enough.”
You roll your eyes at your best friend, giving him a slightly exasperated, amused twist of your lips in response.
“I’m going to take that as a compliment.”
“It wasn’t.” He immediately deadpans back, picking up the pace a bit as the final stretch of your run comes into view.
You match him easily, your wolf reveling in stretching its legs.
Speeding up just enough to get in front of him, you turn and jog backward a few steps, offering him what you hope is a pleading look, batting your eyes for extra good measure.
“Please, Sangie? For me, baby? Mommy really wants this one.” Your voice is a whine, and you don’t miss the way he grimaces at your words.
“Ew. You’re disgusting. Don’t ever call yourself mommy ever again.”
He shoves past you and makes a sprint for the parking lot.
You grin, and follow after him, calling out loud enough to be heard over your pounding footsteps, “So is that a yes then?”
“Fuck you!” Yeosang calls back over his shoulder, giving you the middle finger without looking in your direction.
Your grin grows wider.
You’re going to take that as a yes.
**************
You push through the door into the apartment and are immediately met with the smell of something cooking.
Your stomach growls at the thought of food-Minho’s food- and you kick off your sneakers with a thud against the entryway hall, wincing slightly as they leave a scuff on the plaster.
Jeongin appears on his way to the living room, hoisting a backpack over his shoulder, and when he catches sight of you, he pauses, taking in your running outfit, the sheen of sweat on your skin.
“How many?” He asks without preamble, grinning at you.
“Twelve.” You answer back with an arch of your brow and a smug smirk, and he steps toward you to give you a fist bump, knuckles meeting your own.
“Nice.” He grins wider, nodding his head.
“Jesus Christ.” Jisung, who has just appeared in the doorway behind Jeongin, mutters beneath his breath at your words, as if the very thought of running twelve miles is utterly revolting to him.
“Whoa.” Changbin practically runs into the halted Jeongin and Jisung as he enters, and the small front hallway is beginning to feel more and more packed by the second. “I was unaware we were having a pack meeting by the front door.”
“We’re not.” Jisung chirps, herding Jeongin toward the living room. “Just saying hi to noona.”
Changbin pats the youngest on the head affectionately as he slips by him, and then proceeds to lean over to grab his shoes, already dressed for the gym, his duffle bag hanging loosely off one shoulder.
You move to allow him access to the closet, and suddenly, he freezes, eyes flicking up to your own.
You stare at him, unsure of what’s happening, and then he promptly drops his gym bag and straightens up, sneakers forgotten.
His hand goes against the wall beside your head, and he leans into you, fingers gripping your chin, pupils suddenly wide and dark.
“You smell fucking incredible.” He murmurs, voice on the edge of a growl.
Suddenly, it clicks.
You give him the hint of a smug smirk. “I just got back from a run.”
Changbin groans, as if he’s heavily considering the pros and cons of controlling himself, and then grits out, “God, I love when you go running.”
His fingers tighten on your chin, and he angles your head to expose your throat, before he leans over and licks one long stripe up the side of your neck with an expert, rough swipe of his tongue.
Everything inside of you turns to jelly.
“Fuck, you taste fucking incredible too.” He growls, lips brushing against the underside of your jaw with every word.
“Oh, fuck me.” Hyunjin groans in obvious disgust, appearing in the empty doorway, a pair of headphones in one hand, his painting supplies in the other.
He’s clearly referencing the swirl of alpha pheromones currently drenching the entryway, not to mention, Changbin’s mouth still on your skin, and his very clear erection pressed between the two of you.
“I would love nothing more.” Chan replies cheekily, appearing behind the disgruntled Hyunjin, giving him an affectionate pat on the head as he pushes past the clearly annoyed omega. “But later, Jinnie. Bin and I are late for the studio.” Changbin sighs and rolls his eyes heavenward at Chan’s words, pulling back from you reluctantly as the head alpha leans between the two of you to grab his shoes, either completely oblivious to the tension or blatantly choosing to ignore it.
“God fucking dammit.” The other alpha curses beneath his breath, and you swear you see Chan hide a smile.
“C’mon, Bin. We have shit to work on. We gotta get it done.”
Changbin groans and leans over to grab his bag with jerky irritated movements. “You’re a fucking cockblocker to the fullest, hyung.”
“It’s his proudest title.” Hyunjin interjects with a sweet smile and bat of his lashes in Chan’s direction, as he moves past the three of you to reach for his jacket.
You giggle, and Chan shoots you an exasperated look, Changbin looking up at the sound.
Chan turns to Hyunjin to say something in response, and Changbin takes the momentary distraction to step toward you once more, his eyes darkening and his posture growing threatening.
His fingers pinch your chin, tighter than before, and you resist the urge to whine, as he leans in close to your lips, the scent of smoke filling your nose.
“Tonight. At the game. You’re mine.” His growled words send heat directly between your legs, wet and warm, but you try to remain stoic, giving him an innocent look as you inquire back sweetly, “What if we’re on the same team?”
Gold flickers across his irises, and his lips pull back in the start of a growl to reveal sharp canines.
“We won’t be. I’ll make sure of it.”
You swallow hard, and give a little nod, your alpha fully baring its throat to him now that he’s dropped his tone into alpha timber.
Changbin releases you, satisfied, and gives you one last long dangerous look, adjusting himself in his sweats while holding your gaze, before he reluctantly follows Chan out the front door.
*********
“God, we’re so fucking dead.” Yeosang mutters beside you, jiggling his leg nervously, so hard that the log you’re currently sitting on vibrates.
You reach out a hand and tamp down his knee, giving him a pointed stare.
“Will you stop that?” You hiss out the side of your mouth, eyes darting around to the surrounding pack members, all lost in their own conversations as they wait for the game to start. “This is the last fucking time I ask you to be my accomplice.”
“Good.” Yeosang whips right back beneath his breath, glaring sidelong at you. “I rather prefer myself breathing, thank you very much, and after this, Seonghwa-hyung is gonna skin me alive.”
You roll your eyes at his dramatics and dig your nails into his knee, so hard he winces and shoots you another outraged glower.
“Relax, Sangie. How bad could it possibly go?”
“I fucking hate you, you know that?”
You give him a wicked grin and blow him a cheeky kiss, to which he responds with a middle finger, just as Seungmin steps into the light of the bonfire you’re all gathered around.
As the unofficial officiator of the games, his long fingers are already full of black and white scrunchies.
The beta pushes his glasses up the bridge of his nose with the back of his hand, and glances around at all of you with a serious expression.
Everyone is quiet now, the banter from earlier dying down and giving way to anticipatory tension.
“Rules are as they always are.” Seungmin starts, his voice carrying over all of you, drifting into the dark, silence of the wood beyond.
The fire crackles loudly, and a log pops before disintegrating into glowing red coals.
The wave of ensuing smoke reminds you of Changbin, and you glance across to him to find him already watching you, eyes dark and endless.
Predatory.
A shiver goes down your spine.
“However-” Seungmin clears his throat, and beside you, Yeosang tenses up.
The smell of rotting driftwood assaults your senses.
God, he’s going to fucking give it away before the game even begins.
Seungmin’s gaze drifts to you, but it doesn’t linger, skirting to Yeosang and then beyond.
He’s a master at poker face, it’s why he’d been chosen as the referee for the games in the first place, never giving anything away.
“-an anonymous party has requested a caveat of sorts, and I have agreed.”
There is some murmuring among the omegas to your left, but your gaze is locked on Seungmin, every muscle in your body suddenly bunched.
Your wolf paces impatiently, ready to run.
A slight smirk twitches on Seungmin’s lips.
“After all, anything to make the game a little more unpredictable, am I right?” Beside you, Yeosang groans.
“But first-” Seungmin backtracks, and you hear a few other pack members groan at the anticlimactic drag out. “-come and get your scrunchies.”
Everyone stands in a bustle of motion, converging on Seungmin, hands eagerly grabbing markers confidently.
You step forward, reaching for one of the black predator scrunchies in the beta’s left hand, when someone knocks your hand away, fingers going tightly around your wrist.
You know who it is without looking, yet you glance over anyway, seeing Changbin scowling at you, his expression fiery.
“Not you.” He growls, before he takes the scrunchie you were reaching for and slides the black fabric around his own wrist.
You stare at him, but he doesn’t let you go, reaching across your joined arms for a prey marker instead, nodding to Seungmin, before he snaps the white scrunchie around your free arm, tugging you toward him with the same motion.
You stumble, and your free hand braces against his chest so you don’t fall into him completely, though you know he could hold you up easily.
His eyes are so dark, that you swear you can see the lack of reflection in them.
“Like I said,” He rumbles dangerously, and the sound vibrates in his chest, through your fingers, and instantly makes you swallow. “You’re mine.”
The brat inside of you rears its head, and you smirk up at him confidently.
“If you can catch me.”
Something feral flashes across Changbin’s eyes at your taunting, and he bares his teeth, a growl starting low in his chest.
“I don’t think you’re understanding me, little one.” He purrs warningly, fingers tightening their hold on your wrist, making your pulse race beneath his fingertips.
He leans down, and his nose brushes your own, his voice dropping impossibly low and deep.
More animal, less man.
“You’re. Mine.”
He releases you, and you stumble back, head swimming, wolf suddenly very much ready, and he gives you one last, long dark look, before he retreats to the predator side of the fire, sitting down beside Chan.
You catch your breath, and return to sit beside Yeosang, who is nervously playing with his own white scrunchie.
“That looked intense.” He remarks, and it takes you a minute to realize he’s talking about Changbin.
“Yeah.” You manage to get out, still slightly breathless, more than a little turned on. Your inner thighs are already wet. “Just a little.”
Across the fire, you can feel Changbin’s gaze boring into you.
Your attention is drawn back to Seungmin as he drops his now empty hands, crossing his arms over his chest as he regards you all once more.
“Now. As for the caveat-” His gaze sweeps to the predator side of the fire, and Yeosang gulps audibly from beside you.
“Tonight, predators are not allowed scent blockers.”
Chaos ensues.
Beside you, the rest of the prey glances between each other with wide eyes, whispering and murmuring.
Across the fire, the predators are in shambles.
“What? That’s bullshit!” San shoots to his feet.
Wooyoung cackles gleefully from somewhere beside Felix.
Seungmin holds out his hands to either side, looking annoyed with the commotion.
“Everyone shut up, I’ve spent the time going over this additional rule, and I think it’s well allowed in this instance-”
Your eyes drift across the crest of the fire without permission to Changbin, who hasn’t moved since the announcement, seated silently beside Chan, a frozen statue amidst the chaos.
He arches a brow when he catches your gaze, and something in his slightly amused, impressed expression clearly inquires silently, your doing?
You can’t bite back the grin that threatens your lips, as you give a slight, silent shrug in response.
Try to catch me now, predator.
“Oh fuck, he knows.” Yeosang squeaks from beside you, and you glance over to your friend, before following his terrified gaze across the bonfire to Seonghwa, who is staring down the other alpha with nothing less than murder in his dark eyes.
You pat him unhelpfully on the shoulder.
“RIP.”
Yeosang glares at you. “You better fucking speak at my funeral.”
You grin. “No promises.”
He curses, and mutters another string of insults beneath his breath, but your gaze is drawn back to that of a certain alpha sitting across the fire, completely nonplussed and completely focused on you.
Fuck, tonight was going to be fun.
“Prey.” Seungmin calls out, and you snap your gaze back to him, now holding a large open jar of what looks to be vaseline, but is really scent blocking gel, in his outstretched hand. “Come cover up.”
You grin, and pat Yeosang on the back once more for good measure before rising to your feet, ignoring his pointed look of death in your general direction.
Yeah. Tonight was going to be really fun.
*******
It had started to drizzle shortly after you entered the forest.
Prey got their precursory fifteen second head start, and you had used it wisely, breaking immediately for the eastern edge of the boundaries, where you knew a small stream was banked by steep walls and thick foliage.
You may have the advantage of wearing scent blockers, but any and all advantages stopped there.
Changbin was bound to hunt you like a bloodhound on a scent, and you needed to get to that water fast, washing away your scent trail and footsteps, your sneakers already beginning to sink into the gathering mud, leaving behind a clear path.
You reach the stream in record time, and survey your surroundings, debating the easiest way to make your way down the steep embankment.
The rain is pouring now, drenching your clothes and making them heavy, your line of sight severely compromised as the fog starts to roll in.
A crack of lightning over head startles you, making you flinch, and consequently, lose your precarious footing.
With a yelp, you slip in the mud and go down, tumbling violently down the embankment and into the stream, which is engorged and rapid with the oncoming downfall.
“Fuck.” You curse, the cold water of the stream instantly making you shiver, your clothes even heavier and wetter than before, as you struggle to right yourself and crawl to the bank of the stream, the rocks slipping beneath your hands.
The clay that lines the stream is soupy now, thick and breaking off between your fingers, and you swear again as you scrabble to get a grip good enough to pull yourself up.
That’s when you hear it-the sound of a branch cracking, loud enough to be heard over the sound of the rain.
You instantly freeze, ignoring the mud covering your hands, the freezing water slipping over your legs.
Another snap of foliage, closer now, and you suck in a breath, trying not to panic, as you glance around for somewhere in the stream bed to hide.
And then you see a pair of large, dark eyes staring at you wildly from the midst of a thicket only a few feet away, the panic clear in the familiar caramel irises.
Jeongin.
Without thinking, you roll your body across the little bit of embankment separating you, and drop down into the middle of the thicket beside him.
You’re breathing heavily, your clothes drooping from your limbs with the weight of the water, and the branches scratched you mercilessly on the way in, but beside that, you’re hidden.
And that’s all that matters.
A footstep sounds above you, on the edge of the upper embankment, out of your view, and Jeongin stiffens beside you.
If you could scent him right now, you would bet the small safety of the bush you’re currently hiding in would smell strongly of burning bread and too much cinnamon.
Instead, a wave of roses tickles your nose, and then, the faint whiff of amber.
Fuck, you should’ve known they’d be hunting together.
Another footstep, and then you hear Seonghwa say in a soft voice, “Clever prey. Using the water and the storm to their advantage.”
“Mm.” That’s Minho’s voice, humming low in agreement. “But we knew they were clever already, didn’t we?”
Seonghwa chuckles, more of a purr, and it has your hackles rising. “I guess we did.”
“Still-” Minho muses, and you see a sneaker come into view, dropping over the steep cut off of the embankment you fell down only minutes before.
Beside you, Jeongin cowers back, his eyes large and dark, pupils blown.
A whimper escapes his lips as Minho draws closer, and you slide your hand over his mouth quickly, silencing him, as you give him a pointed, wordless stare, your own body tensed and ready to run.
Minho’s muddy sneaker is dangling right in front of your hiding place now, and Jeongin is shaking.
“-I wonder how far they’re really willing to go.”
There is the sound of a branch breaking, and then the sneaker disappears from sight, before you hear the two alphas resume walking away from you.
Once you can’t smell even a hint of roses or amber any longer, you allow yourself to collapse back into the mud, removing your tightly clamped hand from Jeongin’s mouth.
He has red marks from your fingers dug into his full cheeks, and his eyes are still wide and terrified, his chest rising and falling with rapid breaths.
“Fuck.” He breathes out, shuddering on the exhale. “That was close.”
“Yeah.” You give a quick, curt nod, and glance up at the dark sky through the branches of your hiding spot, judging how much time has passed.
Changbin would be hot on your trail by now. You don’t have much time.
“We should go.” You give Jeongin a serious look, and he nods, swallowing, his throat bobbing, before you both push free from the branches of the thicket.
Your sneakers fill with water once more as you emerge into the open, stepping into the stream.
“Head off and I’ll go the opposite direction from you. We’re too vulnerable if we stick together.”
Jeongin nods again, clenching his fists, his small frame still shivering, and doggedly begins jogging away from you, staying in the creek for several meters, before you see him grab for an outreaching root and pull himself up the embankment and out of sight on the other side.
Letting out a steadying breath, you take off in the opposite direction.
When you’re far enough down stream that you can no longer see the spot where Jeongin disappeared, you leap up the embankment, the mud crumbling beneath your feet, as you slip your way upward, grabbing for a low hanging branch as your foot slides out from under you once more.
You ignore the burn of the rough bark tearing into your palms, heaving yourself upward quickly and quietly, feet finally landing on the somewhat steady lip that juts out before the drop into the stream below.
It’s still pouring, and you swipe a hand across your forehead to clear the dripping water from your vision, even as your newly torn skin stings in protest.
Swiping your palms on your wet pants, ignoring the burn as you do so, you take off at a light sprint, following the line of the stream further and further away from Jeongin, and where you’d last heard Seonghwa and Minho.
It’s tough going, the mud sucking at your feet with every step, the rain soaking your clothes until they’re so heavy they feel like lead attached to your limbs, and you’re panting by the time you reach some sort of clearing, carefully checking your surroundings before stepping out into the open from the safety of the tree line.
The ground is soup here, sinking when you take a careful step forward, the mud quickly rising up around your calf as your shoe disappears from sight.
You swear, and are debating whether to try to double back and skirt around the sink hole type clearing, losing precious time, or just doggedly continue forward, when you smell it.
Smoke.
It burns your nostrils, your throat with every heaving breath inward, sharp and acidic, and fuck, he’s close.
You hear the sound of a branch snap directly behind you, and without thinking, you throw yourself forward into the clearing.
The mud is trying to slow you down, but you leap forward, ignoring the pull on your sneakers, the burn in your calf muscles.
You lunge forward with wild abandon, anything to put some distance between the two of you, and then you feel it, cold fingers snaking around your muddy ankle.
You go down with a shriek, narrowly avoiding landing on your face by catching yourself on your aching palms, flailing in the pool of muck, and as you scrabble to grab something, anything, in front of you to try and drag yourself from his hold, the mud does nothing but break into thick, wet chunks beneath your fingers.
Changbin flips you so you’re on your back, staring up at him, chest heaving, and pins you to the ground, his knees going down heavily on your legs, one of his hands looping around both your wrists and tugging them up into the mud above your head.
You’re both breathing hard, and it gives you a moment of satisfaction to know you put up a good fight.
“Got you.” Changbin growls, leaning over close to your ear, his eyes so dark they could swallow you whole.
There’s only wolf behind those eyes, predator, and the thought makes your legs instantly turn to something akin to jelly.
You stare up at him, silent, and watch him take in the way the mud must be streaking your face, the bloody skin of your palms in his hold.
“Honestly, you made this too easy for me, it’s like you wanted to be caught.” He purrs, lips lifting into a slight smirk, dark and menacing.
“What if I did?” You fire back instantly, defiance rearing its head at his taunting.
Changbin arches a brow, eyes flashing. His fingers pinch your wrists, and you resist the urge to wince.
“Then I’d say, little one, that you don’t know what you’re in for.”
Fuck.
The human part of you desperately wants to give in, desperately wants to be caught, but the louder, more dominant wolf side of you is telling you to run, to resist, to give him what he so obviously wants.
What you both want.
A fight.
His free hand slides down your side, finding the soaked waistband of your leggings, and his fingers curl around the elastic as his swirling golden eyes meet your own.
Every muscle in your body tenses.
His cold fingers touch your equally chilled skin, and he shifts slightly, hovering some of his weight so that he can begin to tug down your leggings.
It’s the moment you need.
Kicking out, you throw him off balance, and he releases you in surprise, giving you just enough time to slither out from beneath his body and make one more last attempt to escape him, scrabbling on hands and knees through the mud to try and regain your footing.
You barely make it three feet before you feel his fingers close around your ankle once more, dragging you back through the mud toward him easily, instantly halting your forward progress.
Swearing and spitting like a cornered cat, you fight him the entire way, fingers clawing trails into the mud, until he’s got you back beneath him, pinned down, staring down at you triumphantly.
You’re both panting again, covered head to toe in mud, and the adrenaline is pumping intoxicatingly through your veins, making everything white hot to the touch.
“Fuck you.” You spit up at him, baring your teeth and glaring him down, writhing in his iron grasped hold.
Changbin grins, sharp teeth flashing white against the streaks of mud on his face, and arches a brow, sitting atop you nonchalantly, as if he hasn’t just battled you for every last inch.
“Normally, I’m into that, and I’d let you.” He acquiesces, his smile dropping into something closer to a dangerous, threatening smirk, as he leans down to put his lips against your ear. “But right now, prey, I’m going to be the only one doing the fucking.”
His fingers find your waistband once more, and this time, he doesn’t hesitate, ripping the fabric down your legs in one swift motion, baring your skin to the elements, and his gaze.
He sits back, admiring you openly, as your skin begins to pebble beneath the cold rain, the mud oozing between your now naked thighs.
“I can smell it on you, you know.” He muses, eyes never leaving your body, expression growing hungry. “You may not give yourself away like an omega, but your arousal is still palpable.”
As if to show you, he swipes a sudden hand up between your legs, and you jolt at the contact, his fingers cold on the place where you’re most hot.
“See?” He holds up his hand, and arches a brow, and his fingers glisten, even in the darkness.
“That could just be rain.” You argue back halfheartedly, because honestly, seeing Changbin with your arousal all over his fingers is doing something weird to your brain.
“Oh?” He murmurs, brow arching even further into the line of his dark, wet curls, as if he’s challenging you to continue.
“Yeah.” You nod weakly, your body starting to lose its fight against him.
It’s fucking hard to resist him when he’s between your legs, showing you your traitorous body’s reaction to him, his own arousal pressing into you from beneath the wet, dark material of his gray sweats.
Without dropping your gaze, he brings his fingers up to his mouth and cleans them off with one long swipe of his tongue.
Your brain short circuits.
Fuck.
Me.
He seems to know he has you, lips quirking upward into the hint of a twisted, triumphant smirk.
“I can assure you, it’s not rain, little one.”
He leans over, his chest brushing yours with each heaving breath.
His eyes are entirely black pupil, laced with swirling, hot gold.
“Now.” He hums, knocking apart your knees with his own, baring you completely for him. His free hand, the one he licked clean, moving to the waistband of his own sweats.
“Be a good little prey, and let the predator have his reward, hm? After all-” He frees himself from the wet fabric of his sweatpants, and you resist the urge to let your eyes trail downward, swallowing hard. “-I did catch you.”
“I made it easy on purpose.” You gasp out, the words hitching, as he trails himself slowly up and down your inner thighs.
The corner of his mouth lifts with amusement, but he doesn’t look up, watching the way your body openly reacts to what he’s doing.
“Did you?” He muses, almost to himself, beneath his breath.
Your whole body trembles beneath him.
“I don’t believe that.” He continues, voice a low murmur, almost a rumble, in his chest. He reaches up and turns over one of your trapped palms, baring the bleeding, torn skin. His gaze meets your own, and his eyes are dark, dangerous.
Something low swoops in your belly.
“If you’re going to lie to me, little one, at least make it worth it.”
You open your mouth to retort something smart in return, when, without warning, Changbin slams his hips forward and sheaths himself inside of you.
You cry out, stars exploding behind your eyes, back arching and muscles spasming, and Changbin’s hand comes around your throat, pinning you to the muddy ground, his fingers pressing into your skin hard enough to have the nails breaking the surface.
“Don’t move.” He commands, voice strained, the arm that’s holding himself up, hovering over you, beginning to shake slightly. “You don’t have all of it yet.”
Fuck.
You’re whimpering, you’re aware of it, but you can’t stop, as he leans forward, releasing his breath slowly, and, stretching you to the max, finishes fitting himself inside you.
He lets out a shuddering breath. “Fuck.”
You feel your muscles relax slowly, one by one, adjusting, and Changbin slowly releases his hold on your throat, finger by finger, until you can breathe again.
“Breathe, baby.” Changbin admonishes in an almost soft tone, as if he can tell what you’re thinking, and you take in a few ragged breaths, whining and writhing when the movement has him rubbing against all the right places. “Good girl.”
He starts to move then, bucking his hips into your own, and you swear to god, you black out, whimpering and clawing at his chest through his hoodie like an animal in heat.
“God, look at you, taking me so well.”
The praise has you reaching out, clawing at the muddy ground, trying to gain more friction.
“Bin, I need-” You gasp, breath hitching, as he hits a good spot, and you both simultaneously groan.
He pauses, reaching up to wrap his fingers beneath your jaw, forcing you to focus on him, meet his gaze.
His eyes are darker than the storm clouds brewing angrily overhead, and you vaguely have the thought that the gold swirling in his irises matches the flash of the lightning sparking above the trees.
“I know what you need, little one. I don’t need you to tell me.”
You roll your bottom lip between your teeth, and finally nod, your muddy hands coming up to fist in the front of his dirty, wet hoodie, your nails itching to feel his bare skin.
Changbin must take it as a wordless acknowledgement, because he moves again, his hips hitting yours, and you get the black spots in your vision once more as you cry out.
“Now.” His hand closes a little more tightly around your throat, making your air reedy, your heart pound. Adrenaline is making you feel like you’re lightheaded, and you’re so close, even with just this-
Changbin smirks down at you, a predator. “Hold still, and let me devour you.” He leans over, and his teeth make contact with your mating mark, sinking into the sensitive flesh there, and you mewl, scrabbling for a hold on his sweatshirt, as he picks up his pace with renewed vigor, pounding into you relentlessly.
It doesn’t take long.
The adrenaline has you both on a knife’s edge, ready to topple with the slightest breath, and it seems like merely moments before your vision is exploding once more, and you’re gasping his name as you come, clenching around him.
Changbin follows you over the edge with a roar, and you’re both left panting, sweat mixing with the rain, mud mingling on your sticky skin.
Thunder rumbles overhead, as Changbin catches his breath, looming over you, dark curls tumbling over his forehead, his tongue darting out to wet his lips as he stares down at you.
Your whole body feels numb and satiated, and your eyes feel heavy.
He rolls off of you, plopping down into the mud beside you, and you both just breathe for a moment, staring up at the turbulent sky.
Finally you feel his fingers curl around your wrist, and rolling your head so you can look at him, you see him lift his own muddy hand to his lips, pulling the dirty black scrunchie off with his teeth, before he slides it over your own hand, onto your wrist beside the once white marker.
He lets your hands flop back down between you unceremoniously, but keeps his fingers curled tightly around your own.
“There. I think you earned that.”
You watch the way his chest rises and falls with his ragged breathing, feeling eerily and utterly content in this moment, the storm pouring down on you from above, Changbin’s seed dripping slowly down the inside of your thighs.
Feeling your gaze, he glances over at you, lips pulling into the hint of a smile, before he pushes himself up beside you and his gaze travels to your bare, dirty legs.
He cocks his head, and glances to where he discarded your leggings earlier, a strange look on his face.
You sit up with effort, and reach for the article of clothing, balling it into your hand to begin to rub away the juices still clinging to your skin, when Changbin stops you with a hand on your wrist.
You glance up at him curiously, and his eyes flash gold in the dark.
“Don’t clean up. I want you to walk out of here knowing you’re mine, and feeling that reminder run down your legs all the way back to the house.”
You stare at him, and the corner of your mouth ticks upward.
“What about the rest of the pack?”
Changbin shrugs, standing, before he leans over to offer you a hand up.
His own lips curve into the hint of a self satisfied smirk, and if you hadn’t just come so hard you were still feeling slightly dizzy, you would’ve begged him to go another round.
“Fuck them. I want them to know too. I want everyone to know.”
You find-as he helps steady you so you can step back into your wet, filthy pants-that you don’t mind that idea one single bit.
********
You’re shivering so badly that it makes turning on the shower a more difficult task than it should be.
The adrenaline had finally worn off in the car home, and once you’d stepped inside and felt the warmth of the waiting house, your body had suddenly decided enough was enough.
You needed to get out of these clothes and into a warm shower as quickly as humanly possible.
Stripping had been nearly impossible, the drenched fabric sticking to your skin, your trembling fingers struggling with every single closure, but you had managed it, and now, finally turning on the hot water, you can see the end at the light of the tunnel.
It includes a hot shower, a warm bed, and as much of Minho’s leftovers as you can stand.
The door to the bathroom creaks open, letting in a cool stream of air that makes you shiver, and you glance over your shoulder, watching as Changbin enters, shutting the door quietly behind him.
He, unlike you, is still wearing his drenched outfit from the game earlier, dripping muddy rain water onto the floor as he regards you through the foggy, steamed air of the bathroom.
“Hi?” You question, adjusting the stream and temperature of the water, shooting him a curious look over your shoulder.
He doesn’t answer, stepping toward you as you straighten up from adjusting the water, his fingers going to your chin and locking you in place beneath his gaze.
You stare up at him, lips slightly parted, and resist the urge to wipe a streak of mud from his cheekbone.
“I needed to make sure you were okay.” He states softly, dark eyes flicking over your face, down the bare expanse of your body.
You’re caught off guard, still staring at him as he raises a finger to wipe some mud from beneath your jaw.
“I was rough with you earlier. My alpha got a little out of control.” He admits, reaching up to thumb the corner of your mouth.
You trap his hand against your face, relishing the warmth of his skin against your own.
“I like it rough.” The corner of his mouth flickers upward, and a muscle in his jaw ticks.
“I know.”
You breathe out, intertwining your fingers with his, and reach up to finally wipe away the streak of muck on his cheek.
“I’m fine.” You assure softly, holding his gaze.
He takes in a shuddering breath, gaze flicking down your body once more, and then to the running, waiting shower, before he glances back to you, expression softening slightly.
He runs his thumb over your lips, tracing the soft skin.
“I need to make sure. Please?”
You stare at him for another beat, and then nod, slowly pulling him toward the shower with you, as he reaches down with his free hand to strip off his hoodie and then his sweats.
Stepping into the warm water, your body shudders with relief, your tired, sore muscles instantly relaxing, as you lean into the pressure of the stream.
Changbin shuts the door behind the two of you, and immediately moves to assess you, his large, warm hands running over every inch of your body.
You let him do it, sensing it’s something he needs at this moment.
He tilts your head back with a commanding finger under your chin, his eyes roving over your face, gaze flickering down to the broken skin where his nails dug into your throat, the bruising mark of his teeth on your shoulder.
He runs gentle hands over each, pressing light kisses to the injuries, before moving on.
You feel your body slowly leaving fight or flight mode, and sinking into the warmth, the safety, his embrace.
He kneels in front of you, hands on your hip bones, and lets his fingers lightly trace over some of the bruising along your ribs and sides-courtesy of your little struggle-before he kisses them as well, lips featherlight and warm.
He turns over your palms, one by one, and dots kisses along the lines of scratches that mark the skin.
You bury your fingers in his dark curls, and tug slightly, and when he looks up at you, you give him the hint of a smile.
“See? Told you I’m fine.”
“Mmm.” He hums beneath his breath in acknowledgement, as you gently scratch his scalp, your fingers disappearing into the curls.
He leans forward, pressing his forehead to your stomach, and wraps his arms around your waist.
You stay like that-playing with his hair, frozen in his embrace-as the warm water continues to pour down from above.
Finally, Changbin pushes himself to his feet, releasing you, and leans forward, capturing your lips with his own.
You moan slightly as his teeth graze your bottom lip, and he pulls back with a teasing smile, but his eyes are soft.
“I love you.” He says, voice low and affectionate beneath the sound of the water.
You grin and loop your arms around his neck. “I know.”
He rolls his eyes at your teasing, but pushes you back against the cool marble of the shower wall with his body anyway.
You let your fingers card through his hair once more, down the strong lines of his chest, across the mating mark that scars his shoulder.
His fingers press, featherlight, into the bruise just above your hip bone.
“Yours?” You ask quietly, glancing up at him.
“Mine.” He replies back adamantly, before leaning in to kiss you again.

Birthday Sex - Seo Changbin
Tumblr media
pairing: dom!Changbin x fem!reader warnings: alcohol consumption, pet names, oral receiving (reader) word count: 1.5K
a/n: I’m so sorry for keeping you guys waiting :( my school deadlines are killing me and I was too tired to finish this along with my other SEVEN drafts I’m still working on💔 but I’ll try my best to publish them as soon as possible. I hope you enjoy this one in the meantime
~
you and Changbin have been gym buddies ever since you came up to him to ask him for help. he was just doing his basic routine when you noticed him. you were starting your gym journey and had no idea where to begin. what better way to find out than walking up to this buff and handsome man?
after a long period of time of him being your personal trainer, you started to hang out besides the gym as well. you really liked his personality. you found out he was actually very bubbly and loves being all cuddly and sweet to the people he cares about most.
even though you got used to him being so touchy with you the whole day, something was different today. he was even more eager to help you with your squats today. he held you by your hips for support, even though you both know that you don’t really need that. he insisted on helping you, so you didn’t even try to fight it.
you were almost done with your last set of squats when you felt his hand slip to your ass. his fingers touching your cheeks softly. you didn’t really think much of it, since he was just trying to help you. but when he rests his hands on your ass, with no plan of moving his hands, you couldn’t help but think about all the things he could do to you with those hands.
even though Changbin was always so friendly to you, you couldn’t help thinking of him in a not so friendly way. he was the most beautiful man you’ve ever seen and his personality makes it even harder to not fall for him. you try to shake off the thoughts. after you finish your last reps, you turn around to face him and you’re faced with his dark eyes.
you feel your panties already starting to get embarrassingly wet and you can’t help but rub the thighs together. you immediately see his eyes travel down to your legs as you do so, embarrassment washing over you instantly. you look at the ground and fidget with your fingers trying to come up with something to say, but he beat you to it.
“no need to get all shy now baby” he smirks. you look at him and regret it instantly. his dark eyes piercing into your shy ones. your usually outgoing persona flew out the door to moment you met his eyes.
he takes a step forward, his face inching closer to yours. you hold your breath, too scared to even breathe his air. you turn your head in embarrassment, but he grabs your chin and makes you look at him. he brings his face even closer. lips barely touching, as he whispers “I think workout time here is done”
he let’s go of your chin and starts walking away to grab his stuff. you can’t believe what just happened. still struck by the moment you stand there with your eyes wide open. you watch as he finishes packing his stuff and getting ready to get out of the gym. “see you tomorrow for your birthday?” he winks at you.
you can only nod at him. you stand there for a few more minutes, processing what had just happened. were you hallucinating or did he just try to make a move on you. you shake off the thought and tell yourself to not overthink it too much. Changbin has an outgoing personality and loves to tease you, so it’s probably nothing.
~
the next day you’re getting ready for your birthday party. you invited some friends over at your place to celebrate. everyone seems to be enjoying their times after arriving at your place. you’re happy to see everyone having fun.
you walk to the kitchen to get another drink. as you were about to pour the vodka in your cup, you get startled by a voice calling your name, making you spill the vodka on your dress. you turn around and see Changbin walking up to you. “sorry I didn’t mean to scare you birthday girl” he chuckles as he grabs some tissues to clean you up.
flashbacks of your little moment at the gym are coming back to you when you feel him wiping away the alcohol on your dress. “I think I just need to change into something else”. as you turn around, he grabs your wrist. “no we’ll fix it, let me help you with that”. you give him a quick nod assuring him it’s fine to follow you to the bathroom.
as soon as you’re both in the bathroom he locks the door. you’re too focused on getting the stain out of your dress to notice him walking towards you. he takes your hand in his. you look up at him with a confused look on your face. “you’re so pretty you know that?” he smiles at you. you don’t know if it’s because of the alcohol, but your whole body starts feeling warm and tingly after hearing him say that.
he brings his free hand to your cheek, softly caressing it. “can I give you a present?” he asks, his gaze on your lips. you feel your cheeks burning up even more. “y-yeah.. sure, don’t you want to give it to me downstairs? I think my friends would like to see all the presents as well” you chuckle nervously. “I don’t think they’d want to see this one” he smirks.
his words shoot right down to your core, making you rub your thighs together. he steps impossibly closer to you, his mouth right by your ear. “I’m going to touch you now, you don’t mind, right?” you hear the smirk in his voice. you grab his face bringing his lips closer to yours. “please”
he wastes no time picking you up and putting you on the sink. he kisses you passionately before traveling down to your jaw and your neck. his kisses are gentle, but the lust is evident. you reach for the hem of his shirt, signaling him to take it off. he brings his face back to yours. “you want it off?” you nod shyly.
“I would make you work for it, but that’s for another day” he lifts you off of the sink, putting you back on your feet. “strip for me” you immediately take off your dress and panties leaving you butt naked in front of him. you feel relieved that you have a bit of alcohol in your system. you were sure you would feel embarrassed standing there naked while he’s still fully clothed.
“you have no idea how long I’ve been waiting to see you like this” he caresses your waist, admiring your whole body. you smile like an idiot hearing those words from him. he gives you a few more kisses before picking you up again. you wrap your legs around his waist and your arms around his neck, keeping him close to you.
he backs you up against the wall. his now hard cock rubbing against your naked cunt. all you can hear is heavy breathing and groans from both you and him. you don’t have to worry about people hearing you, because of the loud music coming from the living room. and you couldn’t be more thankful, because the groans that are slipping past his lips are the most beautiful sounds you’ve ever heard.
you bring your hand down to your cunt, wanting to rub some circles on your clit to relieve the frustration growing in your body. Changbin notices your hand going down and immediately pulls away from your lips. “come on now baby girl..” he says as he let’s his eyes wander down to your hand that’s now covering your cunt. “.. that’s what I’m here for” he smirks.
he puts you back down on your feet. “hold onto me, yeah?” you nod, excitement rushing through your whole body. he starts kissing your neck and traveling down your body. he stops just at your hip. Changbin looks up at you, trying to search for any discomfort. he takes it as a sign to continue once he feels your hand reaching for his locks. he grins and immediately plunges his tongue in your cunts.
his tongue is lapping up all of your juices, making you moan out loud. you mentally thank yourself for putting on some loud music for your friends. the grip on Changbin’s hair is getting tighter and tighter the harsher he starts sucking on your clit. your hand pulling on his hair makes him groans into your cunt.
you feel your high approaching quickly and you’re sure your legs would’ve given up on you if Changbin’s strong arms weren’t wrapped around your thighs. your eyes rolling to the back of your head as you feel your orgasm ripping through your whole body. he guides you through your orgasm, stroking your thighs sweetly.
you don’t even notice Changbin now standing in front of you again. your eyes still closed due to the intense orgasm. he strokes your cheek softly making you open your eyes. you’re met with his loving gaze and you can’t help but connect your lips against his for the nth time that night. time seemed to stand still kissing him so sweetly and being engulfed into his big arms. you’ve never felt this safe.
after what felt like forever, you separate your lips from his. placing your hands on both his cheeks and giving him a quick peck on his nose. he scrunches his nose and flashes you his bright smile that soon changes into a grin.
“there’s another present in your bedroom, wanna check it out?”

chan:
you and chan were dating for several months now, and it wasn’t like you didn’t want to tell the others, it was just that you didn’t feel ready yet. but when when chan was basically begging you to stay over at his place, reassuring you that the other members planned to go out in the morning so the two of you would stay undiscovered, you couldn’t say no. so one thing led to the others and you were having a chilled movie night until you fell asleep.
what you couldn’t have guessed that the others, were in fact not gone in the morning. unexpected rain hit the area so they decided to stay home, ordering food together instead. and of course they didn’t want to leave chan out, so han went over to his room to ask him if he wants something to. and let’s just say that han definitely wasn’t expecting to find chan laying in bed, completely entangled in a girl he has never seen before. he completely panicked and slammed the door shut, running towards the living room to tell the others what he just saw.
on your side, the loud slam wasn’t a very nice way to be woken up. you turned to chan, his panicked expression matching yours completely. “they are here, aren’t they?” you whispered as if that would save anything. you anxiously ruffled your hair, until chans hand eventually came to stop you. he gently grabbed your face, tilting it up ways so you have no chance but to look at him. “don’t worry darling, it will be alright, i’ll talk to them”, he said pressing a kiss to your forehead. “you really don’t have to do anything you’re not ready for yet, i promise”
minho:
it was slowly getting late and minho still wasn‘t showing up at your apartment, even do he promised to come tonight. you sighed but still you didn’t blame him. he loved his job. so instead of being grumpy you packed a few of his favorite snacks and made your way to the studio.
he usually lets you know if someone is with him, but since he didn‘t this time you just assumed that he was alone….but today he wasn‘t. and just like that you stood frozen at the door, sharing panicked looks with minho while felix and hyunjin were utterly confused by what’s happening.
eventually, minho gestured you to come up to him, confusing the boys even more. he gave you one final look, silently asking if it was okay to tell them, to which you responded wirh a nod. “uhm yeah guys, i haven‘t really had the chance to tell you yet but this is my girlfriend. i mean i wanted to introduce you soon anyways so- yeah” he turned to you and gave you a reassuring smile.
hyunjin and felix share one more look before introducing themselves and giggling. “are you sure about telling the others? you know what you’re getting yourself into, right?”
changbin:
changbin was over at your apartment, the two of you peacefully spending your day off together until a fight erupted. he wanted to cut the sandwiches you made straight up horizontally, but you were team diagonal so you basically screamed at him to stop and from that the situation escalated into a huge pillow fight in the living room. and between the playful screams the two of you let out one thing went unnoticed: somehow changbins phone decided to start a call by itself, the call landing and no other than chan himself, who was for once at home with the other members.
he spoke a very confused ‘hello?’ into the speaker, getting no answer but instead hearing an unfamiliar female voice in the back. he was just about to hang up when he heard a very distinct ‘seo changbin, if you continue cutting sandwiches like that, i fear that i have to break up with you’ which caused him to let out a loud gasp, gaining the attention of the other members who where now gasping ten times louder, which finally caught you attention.
“binnie, did you hear that?” you said, as confused as changbin himself. but when he reached to his phone and saw an ongoing call he immediately knew what was up. he pointed the screen towards you, a faint blush painting his cheeks. “guys, what are you doing?” he asked, sounding very offended but immediately being hit by loud chaotic lashback since he was the one that called.
“i can’t believe that you have a girlfriend and didn’t tell us?? we have a lot of catch up to. when are you bringing her to meet us? what about tomor-“ chan was cut of by changbin hanging up.
“i think we are in real trouble now”
hyunjin:
hyunjin and you met through a shared passion: dancing. actually, to be exact, you are one of his backup dancer. but after you two accidentally met laye at night, the both of you wanting to perfect all of your moves you grew close- very close. when hyunjin eventually confessed his feelings you were happier then ever, the fear of having another one-sided-crush being eased away with a soft kiss.
but the thing is, that after all, you are his backup dancer, and you have to act professionally more than you’d like to. usually, that isn’t a problem but today was just rough, everything going wrong since morning and your eyes just seemed to wander to your comfort person automatically. you tried really, really, hard but your gaze always flew over to him, searching the comfort you desperately needed. and as if that wasn’t enough, you kept messing up your steps, even tripping once, causing you to awkwardly fall on the ground, earning you a worried stare from hyunjin.
and the other boys must have noticed, having to tap hyunjin on the shoulder to regain his attention and asking him if he’s fine.they also asked you to stay for a minute longer when everyone is on their way out. it was like they could sense what was going on. “you guys are dating, aren’t you?” minho finally broke the silence, alternately looking from hyunjin to you, catching the panicked look you gave each other.
“i mean- it’s just-“
“yeah.” hyunjin interrupted your stuttering, firmly taking your hand into his. “ i wanted to tell you guys but i didn’t know how”
“well, good for you, but please, next time, start thinking about your steps instead of staring at each other to death” minho snorted as he walked through the door, leaving you and all the other members besides you speechless.
jisung:
dates like this are more than normal for the two of you, you coming to his studio, at first to just hang out together but it always ends up in big chaos.
today the two of you found one of the silliest voice changers ever, accidentally stumbling over it and now being hung up on it. you‘d either laugh in the microphone or say the most random words and phrases and would end up laughing hysterically at the recording before doing it over and over again. it was like two three-year-olds had been left unsupervised in a music studio, being super entertained by such a simple thing for over thirty minutes now.
with the loud laughter’s echoing through the room, you haven’t even noticed that someone has stepped into the room, quietly observing what’s happening while trying hard to laugh himself. but after a few more minutes, jeongin also broke out in laughter, immediately putting the attention on him. your face expressions dropped and now only jeongins laughter was heard in the room.
jeongin noticed the sudden silence, looking around once again. "is that your girfriend?" he asked, only to be answered with an unsure nod. "nice....by the way chan ordered food, wanna have some. oh and he´s so gonna kill you when he finds out that you kept her secret from him - "
Felix:
After weeks of full schedules, felix and you finally managed to have a movie date night, the other boys being out for something which leaves the two of you a lot of time to catch up on everything and make up for the lack of contact. following the meal you had together was howl´s moving castle, one of your favorite movies ever, for which you cuddled up on the couch surrounded by blankets and pillows, enjoying the closeness of one another.
being back in felix´s embrace was more than you could´ve ever wished for, his head resting in the crook of your neck while his hands draw random shapes an your hips. and maybe, just maybe, it was a bit too comfortable. not even halfway through the film, felix and you managed to drift off to sleep, only to be woken up by a very loud, dramatic scream.
confused and still dazed from sleeping, felix sat up, trying to get a clear view of the boys in front of him. "guys what are you doing here? I thought you were out till- wait what time is it?"
"It´s time for you to explain what´s going on...WHO IS THAT????AND WHY ARE YOU SLEEPING ON OUR COUCH??" Hyunjin dramatically exclaimed together with jisung, the other boys still in shock.
"calm down guys" felix groans " i wanted to tell you guys but i didn´t know how, but i mean this is a way to finally introduce you to my amazing girlfriend"
seungmin:
dinner was already finished, ready to serve but one major thing was missing: your boyfriend. he wanted to be home over an hour ago, but there’s still no sign of him walking through the hallway that keads to your apartment. maybe he was tangled up in work again, which you didn’t blame him for, but you were slowly growing impatient, because he promised that he‘ll be on time.
you got nervous when your mind wandered and you thought that maybe something happened to him, that he got hurt in his way here or- you were probably overthinking , but calling him was the only way to make sure that he’s okay. so you reached for your phone, dialed his number and impatiently waited for him to pick up.
when you finally heard his voice ringing through your phone, you let out a relieved breath before scolding him to make you scared. you could hear the voices of the other members echoing through the phone while seungmin explained that he got caught up practicing with the other members. His voice sounded tired and you could feel that he was truly sorry for letting you wait. he promised you to leave as soon as he could.
“i love you” was the last thing you heard, so you thought he hung up, bit as you looked at your phone you realized: the other boys wered dead silence, no laughing, no talking, nothing. it was jisung who suddenly screamed “what” , making the chaos break once again but this time ten times harder then before.
“uhm babe, i think i’ll have some explaining to do, i’ll call you back in a sec….if i come out here alive“
jeongin:
jeongin and you have been together for exactly six months now, so of course the two of you celebrated with a date in a fancy restaurant, enjoying the evening together in the best way possible. the two of you discussed meeting the other members, but jeongin was a bit scared of their reaction- and so were you, which is why you decided to keep it a secret for now.
unfortunately, the two of you also had a bit too much to drink tonight, which made the situation a bit more difficult. jeongin refused to let you go home alone in your dazed state, so you were standing in front of the dorm with him. but as he slipped the key into the lock to open the door, you pulled away his hand and intervined it with yours. he turned around, furrowing his brows together in confusion.
“you look cute” you giggled, placing one of your hands on his cheek to pull him close. your lips were just s few centimeters from his, when your eyes locked for a mere second before crushing your lips together. you could taste the alcohol from his lips while you melt into his embrace. it was a perfect picture moment- before the door opened.
the two of you stepped apart as quick as you could, but hyunjin was already off running and screaming in circles, gaining everyone’s attention.
“you are so in trouble” was the only thing minho said before leaving you completely red-headed at the door.

Seo-ah knocked on Yoongi’s office door, poking her head in when he greeted her. “I’m back.”
He nodded. “Did you have a good time?”
She grinned, thinking of what she’d left in her closet. “I did. Miran is really fun to be around.”
Yoongi’s eyebrow raised. “Good, maybe now that I have a wife, that’ll keep her out of my hair.”
With that cryptic comment, he returned to his work. Taking the silent dismissal for what it was, Seo-ah closed the door silently and returned to her, no their, room. She had a closet to organize.
~~~
Jinah immediately tracked Seo-ah down when she returned from school, plopping onto the tufted bench in the middle of the closet with a sigh. “How was your day, unnie?”
“It was good, I went shopping with a new friend and then I’ve been putting my things away. How was yours?”
“Same as usual,” she shrugged, pulling a candy out of her pocket and popping it into her mouth. “Want one?”
Seo-ah refused the offer, not wanting to get her new things sticky before she’d even worn them.
“You should go study, Jinah. It’s almost time for your exams.”
With a belaboured sigh, her sister got up, though she lingered at the doorway. “What’s that?”
Seo-ah glanced down at the item in her arms, a smirk tugging at her lips. “It’s a wedding present from me to Yoongi. Don’t you think it suits him?”
Jinah cocked her head at the fabric Seo-ah held up. Nodding, she agreed. “You must tell me what he says about that.”
“Okay, as long as you study,” Seo-ah insisted.
Rolling her eyes, Jinah left, leaving the door open behind her.
“I left you a snack in the fridge!” Seo-ah called after.
She continued her folding and sorting, down to the last bag now.
A cough behind her made her turn to see Yoongi standing in the doorway. “I thought I should let you know that dinner is almost ready. Uh, I’ll leave you to–”
His gaze flicked down to what she’d paused folding, then back up to her eyes.
Willing herself not to get flustered, as she remembered that she was putting away a rather scandalously lacy lingerie set Miran had forced her to buy, she simply nodded. “Thank you, I’ll be there in a minute. I’ll be settled and ready to cook tomorrow.”
“You don’t have to–”
“I like to,” she insisted, turning to hang the lingerie in the darkest depths of her half of the closet.
“Alright. Do you mind if I join you sometimes? I like to cook as well.”
She smiled at him. “Of course not, it’s your kitchen. There’s plenty of space so we shouldn’t worry about getting in each other’s way.”
He nodded silently and left just as silently, leaving her to stare after him curiously.
~~~
The meal was fairly quiet, though Jinah did her best to contribute conversation.
“How would you feel about hosting a welcome dinner so my closest employees can meet you and Jinah?” Yoongi suddenly asked, setting down his chopsticks.
Seo-ah blinked. “That sounds fine. When were you thinking?”
“Hm, would next Thursday work for you?”
“That sounds fine. You know I never have a packed social calendar,” she grinned.
“And what about the first of next month, we reveal our relationship to the public? Quietly, but just something to show off my beautiful wife and let them know that I’m a taken man now?”
Jinah cooed. “You’re earning more and more Husband Approval Points, oppa. Keep it up!”
Yoongi glanced at Seo-ah, who tried to hide her smile behind her water glass. “Thank you?”
“When you reach one thousand HA Points, I may consider forgiving you for not letting me know you were dating my sister until after you were married,” Jinah informed him.
“Jinah–” began Seo-ah, but Yoongi raised his hand, shushing her.
“How many Husband Approval Points do I have at the moment?”
“Five.”
He tsked. “How do I gain these points?”
“Being good to Seo-ah. I will also add two points for every ten thousand won you give me.”
“Jinah!” scolded Seo-ah, now truly shocked. “That is very out of line for you to say!”
“I respect your hustle,” Yoongi told Jinah seriously, fishing his wallet out of his pants. He handed three 5,000 won bills to her waiting hand. “15,000 won, equal to five Husband Approval Points, correct? That brings me up to ten points, or one percent approved of.”
Jinah nodded. “You’re smart. I knew I liked you.”
Seo-ah kicked Yoongi’s foot under the table, making him look at her and her frown. “Don’t encourage her extortion, Yoon.”
He stared at her.
Clearing her throat at the sudden tension in the air, Jinah spoke up. “It’s May twentieth now, which gives Yoongi-oppa approximately six and a half months to reach one thousand points by the end of the year. Care to make any bets on if he’ll make it?”
Yoongi tore his eyes away from Seo-ah to face her sister. “That sounds very arbitrary, especially if you plan on being in charge of the betting and point-awarding. What’s to stop you from rigging it? I think I’d better call my financial advisor here so we can settle this clearly.”
Seo-ah kicked his foot again, harder. “There’s no need to disturb Seokjin and Miran this late, Yoongi. Jinah, no betting, and no bribing Yoongi. You don’t need to disturb him.”
Jinah tsked but settled down, winking at Yoongi when she thought Seo-ah didn’t notice.
~~~
Yoongi’s head poked around the closet door to their bedroom, his sudden appearance in her peripheral vision making her turn.
His deadpan face made her blink in confusion for a moment before she remembered what she’d left on his shelves.
Ah. He’d found it. “You found my present?” she smirked.
He stepped out of the closet fully, revealing the cat-print pyjamas she’d bought under Miran’s urging after they giggled about his feline-ness that morning. Stifling a giggle as she took in the look, she managed, “They look very nice…they really suit you.”
“It would be rude not to wear them when you took such care to get them for me,” he excused himself, sliding into bed and hiding the view under the covers.
She snickered again, joining him and turning out the lights. Miran would be so happy to hear how their prank had turned out.
~~~
Kim Seokjin and Miran’s house
“Babe, you have to leave early to meet Yoongi at the office for that meeting this morning, right?”
Jin turned from fixing his hair in the mirror to his wife, a little puzzled at the non-sequitur.
“I’m going to leave in half an hour, why?”
“Why don’t you carpool today and go pick him up? I’ll go with you, I want to visit Seo-ah.”
Jin shrugged in acquiescence. “Alright, I can leave in five instead. You’re getting close to his wife fast, aren’t you?”
Miran’s head emerged from the dress she pulled on, arms patting down the creases. “I guess so. It’s nice to have someone who understands what it’s like being married to a mobster.”
“Jagiya…we don’t know what she knows, yet. Please don’t get too attached until we know what Yoongi is doing.”
“I know, I know,” she bumped him out of the way to brush her mascara on. “It’s still nice to make new friends, though!”
Jin let them into Yoongi’s house with his key and passcode, surprised at how dark and quiet it still was. He headed to the kitchen to make some tea, expecting Miran to be right behind him.
Of course, his nosy wife was not, instead tiptoeing down the hallway to Yoongi’s room.
Jin followed her reluctantly, wondering at her invasion of privacy while also knowing that Yoongi had to be up and ready to leave soon.
“Aren’t you even going to knock?” he whispered in Miran’s ear as she wrapped her fingers around the handle.
“Shh, I want to see something,” she hissed back.
Jin gasped. “Since when was my innocent Miran-ie a voyeur?!”
She elbowed him back with a glare. “Not that, Jin. Seo-ah got him cat pyjamas and I need to see if he’s wearing them. There’s no way he’ll wear them unless he’s actually in love with her.”
Now Jin’s curiosity was aroused, and against his mature adult brain’s warnings, he followed his impulsive teenage brain’s idea instead.
~~~
Yoongi and Seo-ah’s house
Seo-ah blinked her eyes open, feeling surprisingly rested. Where was she? Oh, yes, her new husband’s bed. He was awake already, looking at her for who knows how long. She blushed, reaching up to pat her bedhead down.
“How long were you awake?”
“Not long.”
His already sensual voice was even worse better in the morning, she found out, feeling something when he spoke.
“So, about last night…”
She hummed, closing her eyes, still too asleep to remember.
“You called me Yoon.”
Her eyes flew open. “Sorry, was that inappropriate?”
He shook his head, one arm emerging from the covers to pat her still-mussed hair down. “I haven’t been called Yoon in years. It was nice to hear. Nicknames really sell the act, too, don’t you think?”
“You’re right…yeobo.”
His eyes crinkled at her teasing advance.
“Glad you agree, jagiya.”
A scratch at the door made Yoongi turn, eyes narrowing.
“Would that be your sister?”
Seo-ah shrugged in confusion. “Jinah?”
A loud yelp sounded from outside, and Seo-ah rushed out of bed. Yoongi halted her at the door, putting his arm in front of her and quietly wrapping his hand around the knob and turning.
He yanked it open to reveal Jinah holding one of his nice kitchen knives in the air, pointed at his second and his second’s wife, who were directly outside the door.
“What is going on?”
Boys Planet Episode 11: Recap and Guide
Tumblr media
Hey, fellow Star Creator! Are you ready to have your heart smashed to smithereens? …. No? Me either. In fact, I'm late getting this recap to you because it was hard to type with my heart next to me in a basin of saline solution. But I managed.
Let’s go!
At 0:38, we start off with the boys hanging out at their dorms after their third mission, high fiving each other and expressing some anxiety about the upcoming eliminations. They have to pack to go home now for a while. The staff has set up a photo booth for them to make some memories.  In case anyone thinks that there’s animosity between Woongki and Zhuang Shai Bo, there definitely isn’t.
The trainees go back back home, awaiting the next elimination ceremony.
Tumblr media
Pretty sure that’s Ricky, just being mysterious and painting roses in a graffiti covered studio, because how else would Ricky spend his time when he’s not performing?
We spend a little time with Han Yujin and his very popular pretty mother. We also see Keita and Kum Junhyeon hanging out with Eunho from Younite and Hwi from Ciipher -- it seems that Junhyeon used to be a trainee at Rain company and trained with some or all of the Ciipher, which explains how they both know Hwi, but I’m not sure the impossibly faced Eunho fits in (seriously, who has a face like that? He looks like a Bratz doll come to life, in a good way). I also don’t know how we never knew that Junhyeon and Keita have been friends this whole time??? They’re just out having a meal and talking about how young Kum Junhyeon was when they used to train together. We see a lot of other stuff, including Kim JiWoong at a dog cafe, even though he’s apparently allergic to dogs. They’re all visiting with friends and family.
Then we see the guys all packing to go back to Planet Camp, even though many of them know that they probably won’t make it through this elimination ceremony. It’s pretty sad. But remember, they’re all going to be ok, right, team? A lot of them are signed with good companies and will probably debut in 2025, if not sooner. So deep breaths. It’s ok!
Then we visit with Park Hanbin, who is wearing a very soft looking blue sweater, as if anticipating future MNET shows. He says he’s worried about not being able to debut. Park Hanbin, you silly goose. You’re going to debut whether or not you make it into Bepler. Listen to BPR Noona. I know of what I speak.
6:15 Now it’s time for the elimination ceremony!
So, I actually watched the live streaming ceremony, which popped up on my phone as I was getting ready to go to sleep. Cannabis is legal where I live and so I might have been particularly ready to close my eyes, you know? But I watched, my eyes blinking heavily, because I wanted to know! The things the boys were saying weren’t translated, so I was only able to catch the gist. Also, the live broadcast was just a raw feed of them, and without the editing and background music, it felt like I was watching a first rehearsal.
Anyway, as usual, we start with the boys backstage talking about how nervous they are -- us too, guys -- and then coming out in small groups based on their most recent challenge mission. They do various kinds of schtick, and once their whole team is out they do a combined schtick. It looked heckin’ awkward in the live broadcast, but edited down it looks much better.
Here’s the order they come out:
Kim Tae Rae, Na Kamden, and Zhang Shuai Bo (Switch)
Keita, Park Hanbin, and Yoon Jongwoo (Switch)
Wang Zi Hao, Ollie, and Haruto (Supercharger)
Woongki, Takuto, Seo Won (Supercharger)
Zhang Hao and Lee Jungheyon (Over Me)
Ricky, Chen Kuan Jui, Jay (Over Me)
Sung Hanbin and Han Yujin (Say My Name)
Yoo Seung Eon, Seok Matthew, and Kim Ji Woong (Say My Name)
Hui (Lee Hoe Taek), Hiroto, and Lee Seung Hwan (En Garde)
Kim Gyuvin, Kum Junhyeon, Park Gunwook (En Garde)
And who is their Star Master this time? In the live broadcast, she stood with her back to the camera for just a few seconds and then came in, but of course, in the edited version, there’s 15 minutes of guessing first.
But it’s Jeon Somi!
Tumblr media
I would impale myself on those spikes every time I moved slightly, but she makes it look good.
If you’re not familiar with Jeon Somi, she is a successful soloist who went through the reality show gamut. First she was on a show called Sixteen, a reality competition show that created the kpop giants Twice (you know, the ones who sing “Feel Special”). She didn’t make the lineup of Twice, but she got pretty popular from being on the show. Then she was on the first season of Produce 101, the precursor of Girls Planet/Boys Planet, and ended up pretty much killing it, taking first place in the final episode and becoming the “center” of project group IOI (pronounced “eye-oh-eye”). Check out their song Very Very Very if you want to see what IOI is like.
After IOI disbanded, Somi became a soloist. I love her song Birthday -- my fella doesn’t like much kpop, but for whatever reason he loves Birthday. (He specifically loves how she she says “eyyy”.) Despite it being a pretty great song, Birthday wasn’t a huge hit because she was “f a a t “ at the time (she absolutely wasn’t, and even if she was, it shouldn’t matter, but people can really be The Worst, and also her stylist didn’t know how to dress a young woman with actual boobs). Anyway she has other songs now, like Dumb Dumb, and she’s frighteningly skinny now, so she’s a lot more successful. I think she’s always been a sparkly fun person. I wish she’d given her cue cards a bit of a read before she came out on stage, but… whatever. Oh, and if you’re wondering, she’s 22, half Korean and half white, and was born in Canada.
The boys go crazy when they realize it’s Somi -- Kamden says he won’t be able to sleep tonight, and a few of the others talk about how tall she is. She’s 5’8, which is fairly tall for a girl, especially in Korea.
She reads some usual stuff off a cuecard, and then adds, “It’s not easy being on a survival show, is it? I remember HATING this studio myself” (as in, when she was on Produce 101). The boys give her some serious snaps.
We find out that people in 182 countries voted a total of 31,750,293 votes, and that trainees ranked 1 through 18 will survive. We also find out that during the first phase of the announcement, they’ll only be announcing trainees from 11 through 17 inclusive, which is only seven people, so this is really silly.
After that, in the live broadcast, Somi said something that MNET translated thusly: “I know how much effort and sweat they have put into this far because not only I but so many world star creators are sending their cheers to them. Believe in your time and the sweat dedicated, and get with it to the end.” That part didn’t make it into the final airing, as far as I can tell, but I think it’s funny. She read it at top speed, sounding like a bored flight attendant reading the same safety instructions for the millionth time, and not looking up from the cue cards once. Maybe that’s why they didn’t air it.
Anyway -- so now that the stakes have been established, we bring up two teams to start with: Switch and Engarde.
First Round of Eliminations
Tumblr media
Here are the 12 trainees who are waiting to hear their fate, in order of their rank in episode 8:
6 Kim Gyu Vin Love Me Right - K / Love Killa/ En Garde
7 Kim Tae Rae Back Door - K/ Man in Love/ Switch
8 Keita Kill This Love - G/ Zoom /   Switch
9 Park Gunwook Kill This Love - K/ Tomboy/ En Garde
10 Kum Jun Hyeon Back Door - K /Gang /    En Garde
11 Hui Love Me Right - K / Tomboy /En Garde
13 Park Hanbin Hot Sauce - K   /   Law/ Switch
15 Yoon Jong Woo Back Door - K /Home/Switch
20 Na Kamden Back Door - G /Law /Switch
21 Lee Seung Hwan Danger - K/ Gang /En Garde
23 Zhang Shuai Bo Back Door - G/ Feel Special /Switch
28 Hiroto Very Nice - G/ Rush Hour/ En Garde
Somi announces that they’re going to announce the trainee who is 11th place, who got 2,365,604 points. It’s someone who did the killing part.
Then she gives the clue that the person in 11th has the family name “Park.” Well, that’s either Park Gunwook or Park Hanbin. Gunwook doesn’t want to be announced in 11th place; Hanbin would be delighted to be in 11th. So they sort of awkwardly grin at each other from across the aisle.
At 17:13 And then we find out that it’s Park Hanbin! So they’re both happy! Everyone is proud of him and a little surprised.
Tumblr media
Look how happy Z-Bo is for him, and everyone else, too! That’s their fearless leader!
He says, “I won’t be able to be the shiniest star on Boys Planet, but I want to be the one and only star. Since this could be my last chance to shine the brightest, I’ll try to give a great performance.” Somi tells him he shines brightly already, and his gives her a huge, eye squinting grin. That’s doing to be a “happy memory for a sad day” for him -- one of those happy memories you return to when you need a boost. But hopefully Hanbin won’t have too many sad days in front of him.
Kum Junhyeon says to Park Gunwook, “he didn’t deserve the low ranking,” which is so true. Park Hanbin has been great since the first day. It was just hard to get to know his personality at first.
In the live broadcast, Somi asked him to show his “favorite facial expression,” and he did, but it’s all so weird. Does anyone else think that Kpop is getting a bit too codified? Can there be any mystery or general stage technique that isn’t parsed down into the tiniest bits? Anyway, that doesn’t make it into the final broadcast, which is all for the best
As Hanbin walks up to lonely seat 11 all by himself, Jay says, “Park Hanbin serves and deserves,” which is a great way of putting it.
Tumblr media
Here’s the floor plan to help you figure out who is sitting where as the episode goes on-- that’s P-Hanbin in 11th.
This is where the live broadcast ended, so I was a mixture of happy (I was so stoned and sleepy and just wanted to close my eyes) and contented (at least my Park Hanbin is safe!) and furious (seriously, MNET?). But that’s all they gave us, the fuckwits.
Rank 12 is next, and it’s someone from En Garde, someone who stood out because of best friend energy, so that could be a lot of people.
We find out that it’s Park Gunwook! He’s fallen from 9th place to 12 -- everyone is shocked, and there’s a silent pause before people start applauding. That peach, Lee Seunghwan, who probably isn’t going to make it through this elimination, gives him a high five and tries to cheer him up, but he looks really sad.
Tumblr media
Sad, but still cute! I like the ruffly hair.
Ok, everyone’s super surprised that he fell out of the top9, but I’m not that surprised, really. Don’t get me wrong, I still quite like Park Gunwook and am rooting for him to succeed in life. I’ve heard that some people dislike him, but I think he’s essentially a sweet guy who jokes around in uncomfortable situations. I also think he’s talented, with a loveable face, and I hope that Jellyfish will figure out some way to promote him if he doesn’t make the top 9 here.
That all said, he’s been showing the same part of himself again and again on the show. It’s that super masculine, powerful style of dancing that he always does, you know? I think people are just a tiny bit tired of the powerful powerhouse of power. I feel that way a tiny bit myself. I didn’t need him to do something super cute like Say My Name or something mega sexy like Over Me, exactly, but I think I would have liked to see him in something more like Switch -- something that requires a different, more lighthearted style of dancing. I think he can do it, so I hope that he can show that in the next episode.
Who’s next? Rank 15. Who could it be?
It’s someone known for his unique facial expressions, and it’s an extrovert, so it could be a lot of them -- not Keita, Hui, Hiroto, or Lee Seunghwan who are introverts, but any of the rest. (Is anyone else surprised to hear that Kim Taerae is an extrovert? He comes across as more of an introvert -- probably MNET editing striking again.)  Anyway, it could be almost any of these six…
Tumblr media
And at 22:45 we find out that it’s Yoon Jongwoo, who had been ranked 15th in episode 8.
Everyone is super surprised, including Jongwoo himself. I think he was expected to be eliminated after his ignominious treatment in episodes 9 and 10, but seriously, watch his fancam from Switch. He’s such a good dancer and performer. He’d be a benefit to any team he’d be on. I really hope he does a cover of Over Me and puts it up on Youtube. Just putting that out into the universe.
Kum Junhyeon and Kim Gyuvin have given up on casting spells.
Who’s next? Rank 16. Who could it be?
Park Hanbin mutters to himself, “This is daebak.” I should have mentioned this in an earlier recap, but for those of you newish to K-culture, “daebak” means something like “amazing” or “surprising” or even “cool.” Sometimes people just say “daebak” as an exclamation, in which case it means something like “wow!”
Everyone is anxious but Zhang Shuai Bo, who already knows that there is a 99.99999% chance that he is eliminated. He probably didn’t even pack anything in his suitcase. His new brown hair looks nice, though.
It’s someone who’s rank has fallen, and someone who never had a killing part. That could be a lot of people.
And at 25:49 we find out it’s Kum Junhyeon. (The Viki subtitler spells his name Guem -- the G/K sound in Korean is sort of halfway between G and K, so you see it either way depending on the transliteration system in use. And there’s a lot of variation in how people transliterate vowel sounds in Korean, which is one of the reasons I learned to read actual Korean sybmbols!)
Kum Junhyeon has dropped a lot from 10th place. I don’t have a specific theory as to why he dropped, but I kind of think that he’s stopped looking like one of the it-crowd, somehow. Put on a team with Gunwook and Gyuvin, he sort of faded into the background. I like Junhyeon a lot -- he’s charismatic, funny, open-hearted, and a really great singer -- and hope he debuts, but I don’t think he’s going to debut with Bepler. I think he knows that too -- he looks like he’s going to cry.
Tumblr media
We hear from each of them.
Yoon Jongwoo says, “Since I came here without expecting anything, my memories here are so precious. I kept telling myself to be in the final, at least. And I ended up being here. I’d like to thank the Star Creators who support me one more time.”
Park Gunwook says, “I really wanted to be on stage one more time. My goal coming here was moving on to the final.  Thankfully, I’d be able to join the final with such a high ranking. I’m relieved. I’d like to express my love and gratitude to the Star Creators who support me.”
Then Somi asks Gunwook to do something aegyo, and he chooses instead to do something kawaii instead. He says, in Japanese, things like “I love you! I like you a lot!” (The on-screen words are transliterated Japanese with Korean translation underneath.)
Side note: “aegyo” is a thing in K-culture. It’s when idols and other performers do over-the-top, cloying, saccharine cuteness as a… mini performance. It’s quite popular among Koreans, and is often requested by variety show hosts, but international audiences often don’t like it. Personally, I don’t like it, but it’s not my culture and it’s not my place to say “stop doing thing because I don’t like thing,” you know? Though I really do wish they’d stop.
Anyway, Gunwook speaking Japanese spurs Kum Junhyeon to do his speech in Japanese as well, and he sounds like a first semester Japanese student. It’s much cuter than his old “I am 5 years old” shtick, though, I’ll say that.
So, this group takes their seats, and everyone wonders, Who’s next? But there isn’t anyone else in this group.
Though the show plays danger music to make it seem otherwise, it’s fair to assume that Kim Gyu Vin, Kim Tae Rae, Keita, and Hui are probably in the top 10. But unless Na Kamden, Lee Seung Hwan, Zhang Shuai Bo, or Hiroto is ranked 18th, they’ve all been eliminated.
The trainees think that Lee Hoetek/Hui might have been eliminated, but that seems extremely unlikely. The people who’ve been voting for him as of episode 8 are probably going to keep voting for him -- he just hasn’t done enough to attract new people to him. I don’t think he’ll make the final lineup, but I don’t think he’ll be eliminated today.
Then Somi announces that she’s heard that “on a beautiful day, the trainees spent a day full of doubts and suspicion.”
Oh no.
It’s…
30:05 FILLER TIME
If you’re not into Kpop -- and even if you are a little into it --  you may not know about the whole ecology that surrounds idol groups. There are these variety shows, such as After School Club and Weekly Idol, shows where idols come on and get made fun of and forced to do silly things, like dance to their songs at 2x speed, or chicken fight, or answer trivia questions, or whatever the show feels like doing to them.
There’s also a custom of idols creating content specifically for their fans, to hold up their side of the parasocial relationship. They joke around, they play games, they cook or eat food, and most importantly, they talk to the camera like it’s their girlfriend and talk about how much they miss their fans and want to see them again. This stuff makes me uncomfortable, but I know a lot of people like it.
Anyway, all the “filler” stuff we see on Boys Planet is a good introduction to the kind of content you often see on shows or videos like these. As such, even though it’s filler, it’s actually an audition for a big part of the job that they’ll be doing as idols. Plenty of idols are known as much for their reality show appearances as for their performance skills (if not more so).
That said, there isn’t a lot to say about this stuff -- it’s just cute fan service. Here’s a super quick recap:
The boys gather outside at an area with big platform tents, on what must have been a lovely sprint day. Park Hanbin is wearing that same soft looking blue sweater, and Kim TaeRae is wearing a sweatshirt that says Thrasher on it, with just enough dark tape over the logo that they don’t have to blur it. My 17 year old self fainted dead away when she saw that Thrasher logo. Is there anything cuter than a skater boy? (Other than my fella, who is the cutest boy of all boys.)
Tumblr media
The trainees are told they will have to dress like cute animals and spend a self-sufficient day in the forest - - which is complete bullshit, but that’s ok.
First, they have to put on loose pajama pants without using their hands -- which is an excuse to help each other and touch each other’s crotchal areas with their feet and teeth -- in order to choose which team gets to wear which animal outfit. That part is actually pretty fun to watch, especially when Chen Kuan Jui uses his powers of stretchiness to get’er’done.
Once they get their animal outfit on (they’re just big loose onesie outfits), they’re all told that each team will have a “raccoon” in it (basically, like a mole -- someone who ruins everything) and that they have to figure out who it is. They have to go into a tent one by one to find out if they’re the raccoon or not -- it’s not as if they choose to be the mole. If the team can figure out who’s the raccoons amongst them, then everyone else wins the prize, but if they don’t, the raccoons win the prizes. The stakes are high.
Say My Name comes in first and chooses unicorn.
Switch comes in second and chooses something red; I can’t tell what it is.
En Garde comes in 3rd and chooses dinosaur.
Supercharger comes in 4th and chooses something pink; I can’t tell what it is.
Over Me comes in last and chooses something black.
Over Me’s raccoon is revealed immediately as Lee Jeonghyeon, and he says, “thank you” and that he’s confident he can do it. Just more MNET spotlighting him to try to get another K-group member in the top9 if possible.
They’re hungry and have to play a game where they spin around until they’re dizzy and have to poke at a board with ingredients written on it. The best things are in tiny boxes, which are hard to target. But most of the trainees get at least something decent for food.
Then they play another game to win dessert -- prizes range from shaved ice to “healthy tea” -- and this game is my least favorite Korean reality staple, “Scream in the dark.” It’s this game where they all wear huge headphones that block out most sound, and have to shout at each other and read each other’s lips. This game is played on all the idol shows, and it’s really not my favorite. Maybe it’d be more fun if I were a fluent Korean speaker…? Also, it’s obviously going to be hard for non native speakers from G-group.
This part goes on for approximately 3,791 years, so if you’d like to skip to the end of it, go to 49:18.
After that, the boys discuss who amongst them could be the raccoon (mole). We find out that each raccoon has a purple raccoon symbol stamped on his foot. So they choose who among them is the raccoon and then that person has to reveal their foot.
Though Over Me’s team seems to suspect Lee Jeonghyeon, they cast out Jay, almost as if they are the general public viewing the show. Of course, Jay is innocent.
Switch team picks Keita, but he’s innocent as well. Turns out the mole was Park Hanbin! Back when he found out that he had to be the mole, he said -- with his face hidden and voice distorted -- “I can’t lie!” and collapsed on the floor. But he was good at it after all! Have I mentioned lately that I really like Park Hanbin? Because I do.
Say My Name team picks Sung Hanbin, and he’s also innocent. Turns out it was really Han Yujin. Interestingly, when he was chosen as the mole, he said, “I’m good at this kind of thing.” A rare glimpse into the personality of Han Yujin.
Supercharger picked Wang Zi Hao, and he is in fact the mole.
En Garde team picked Kum Junhyeon, and he’s also innocent. Turns out the real mole was Park Gunwook.
The raccoons have won! Their prize is a variety of high fashion outfits -- in other words, their animal onesies. (Ten bucks says they all got to keep their onesies anyway.)
And that’s the end of the filler!
56:50 SECOND ROUND OF ELIMINATIONS
They joke about the game for a bit longer, and then go back to the eliminations.
Next up will be the other teams: Supercharger, Over Me, and Say My Name.
Ricky says to Jay, in English, “Let’s survive together.” Kim JiWoong leans over to Matthew and says, quoting from Love Killa, “Oh I’m sorry, did I make you anxious?”
Here’s everyone who’s up on the chopping block, in case you would like a refresher as to who is who. I’ve listed their most recent rank as well as their three challenge missions.
1 Sung Hanbin Love Me Right - K / Tomboy / Say My Name
2 Zhang Hao Kill This Love - G/ Tomboy/ Over Me
3 Han Yu Jin Back Door - K   / Law / Say My Name
4 Seok Matthew Kill This Love - G/ Love Killa/ Say My Name
27 Ollie Hot Sauce - G Zoom Supercharger
Who’s up first? 13th place. Who could it be?
Someone who’s noted for their talent (thanks, that’s unhelpful). It’s someone from Over Me. We see Park Hanbin with his hands folded, as if in prayer -- he’s hopeful it’ll be his WakeOne teammate, Lee JeongHyeon.
At 1:01:00, we find out it’s Jay.
We see that Jay’s Korean support is painfully low -- only 62,829 votes, while everyone else announced so far has had 200,000+ -- while his global support is super high --  1,400,606 while no one else has broken into the millions. He’s a little sad because he’s dropped another spot, and it’s looking less and less likely that he’ll make top9 in the end.
Honestly, at this point, I think it’s better for Jay that he *not* debut in Bepler. Looking at what’s going on with Kepler, all the fan wars and stuff, I think he’s better of not in that kind of situation. Who wants to debut based on global vote and then have to go to fan meetings in Korea where literally no one acknowledges you? He’ll have a more fulfilling career using this as a spring board to make his own music and release it mostly online, the way that B.I. and Jackson Wang do. Let K-netz hate him all they want, and let him just sing in English like he’d probably prefer to do. I’d much rather have B.I.’s career than, say, Park Jihoon’s. (Though I do absolutely love all three of the songs I linked to, for the record. But Jihoon’s stylist noona deserves serious sanctions. His whole MV team does. Send them to the naughty step for a few hours to rethink their choices in life.) There’s life after Boys Planet and it doesn’t have to involve Bepler.
Who’s next? 14th place. Who could it be?
Someone indispensable -- so team Supercharger hopes it’s Haruto, as do we all, right? Haruto is everyone’s unproblematic fave.
At 1:02:34, we find out it’s Yoo Seungeon.
Yoo Seungeon is signed to Yuehua, along with current trainees Ricky, Zhang Hao, Han Yujin, Ollie, and Kim Gyuvin, and eliminated trainees Brian and Ji Yun Seo.  He really is quite young to debut, and doesn’t really need to debut right now -- it seems quite likely that Zhang Hao and Han Yujin will make the final lineup, and Ricky and Gyuvin have a decent chance, so the Yuehua team that debuts in 2024 or 2025 will start off with a lot of momentum. It still can’t hurt for Seungeon to have more exposure, so it’s nice that he made it. He seems like a sweet kid and a genuine talent. All that said, I’m so worried about Haruto I can’t think straight.
Who’s next? 17th place. Who could it be?
Everyone is hoping that it’ll be themselves, and this is so painful. Cha Woongki tries to keep from hoping. The person is known for their rapping, so of course I’m hoping for Haruto, but there are a lot of rappers here.
Somi says that the person has two “ng” consonants.
Tumblr media
Korean reading time! The little circles you see in Korean have a few different roles. Often, they’re silent, like when they come before a vowel. For example, the family name “Lee” (which is really pronounced more like Ee) is spelled 이, as you see above on Lee Jeonghyun’s name. (That straight up and down line thing is the -ee part. You also see it in the final syllable of Woongki’s name -- 기.) When you see the circle thingy at the top of a name, it’s more like “w-” sound. When it’s at the bottom of a word, it’s a -ng sound. That’s why you see it in the top and bottom of 웅 for Woongki (and for Kim JiWoong, also) and in 왕 Wang. You also see it in the bottom of Lee Jeonghyun’s second syllable.
Of course everyone has tons of little circles in their names since they do so much work in Korean writing -- even before I could read Korean I could always tell Korean from other writing systems by the little circles.
Who could it be in 17th place? At 1:05:05 we find out it’s It’s Lee Jeonghyeon. He burst into tears, which seems to surprise his fellow WakeOne trainees Park Hanbin and Kim TaeRae. Of course people are happy for him but sad that they (or their other friends) didn’t survive.
We get told that without the benefit, he would have been in 19th place.
The surviving trainees get to make a speech.
Jay says, in slow English (probably to make it easier for non-native speakers to understand): "To all my friends and family watching from all the way back in the states, I just want to say thank you so much for tuning in every week and screaming at the television.” Somi, who is Canadian and fluent in English, says “Blow them a kiss!” and he does.
Yoo Seung Eon says, “First of all, I never imagined that I’d survive in a high rank of 14, so I feel like I’m dreaming. I have no words to describe how I feel right now. Also, thanks to my Say My Name teammates who created the greatest performance, I really love you.”
Lee Jeonghyeon says, “At every survivor announcement, I was always on the verge of disqualifications. So today, I thought that I wouldn’t be able to make it. But I’m really grateful to the Team Over Me who practiced hard, so we could get benefits.” Then he says, in extremely halting Chinese and Japanese, things like “I love you” and “thank you”, with Hiroto and other trainees helping him from the sidelines.
They take their seats, and Lee Jeonghyeon regains his cool.
1:09:00 THIRD ELIMINATION SEGMENT - TOP 10
So, let’s look at the list of trainees, in their episode 8 ranking order. Those marked in green have already been seated in 11th through 17th place.
1 Sung Hanbin 2 Zhang Hao 3 Han Yu Jin 4 Seok Matthew 5 Kim Ji Woong 6 Kim Gyu Vin 7 Kim Tae Rae 8 Keita 9 Park Gunwook 10 Kum Jun Hyeon 11 Hui 12 Jay 13 Park Hanbin 14 Ricky 15 Yoon Jong Woo 16 Haruto 17 Yoo Seung Eon 18 Seo Won 19 Wang Zi Hao 20 Na Kamden 21 Lee Seung Hwan 22 Chen Kuan Jui 23 Zhang Shuai Bo 24 Lee Jeong Hyeon 25 Takuto 26 Cha Woong Ki 27 Ollie 28 Hiroto
Speaking of falling out and making room, Somi reminds us all that Park Gunwook has fallen out of top 9, leaving a space for a new person. From context, the only person it could be is Ricky -- unless in some weird world it’s Hui. I just don’t think Hui is doing well enough on the show to make top9.  So yeah, given the obsessive nature of of Ricky’s fandom, I’m assuming he’s a lot of people’s one-pick and will probably be in the top 10, along with Sung Hanbin, Zhang Hao, Han Yu Jin, Seok Matthew, Kim Ji Woong, Kim Gyu Vin, Kim Tae Rae, Keita, and Hui. I’m trying to think, could any of these have fallen out of the top 10, leaving room for Haruto? And I don’t think so. I think Matthew will have fallen a few ranks, but I don’t think he’s fallen out of the top 10.  And Hui -- I think he’s more nervous than he has to be. But we’ll see.
Next up, we find out the “candidates for 9th place”, ie, the people ranked 9th and 10th. And it’s Hui and Matthew.
Tumblr media
Hui is relieved, as he’s been thinking the whole time that he’s been eliminated, while Matthew is resigned to what to him is bad news. Matthew was ranked 2nd and then 4th, so falling to 9th or 10th is a steep drop. I really wish he’d just been sweet and nice about the part switch, because he did a great job in Say My Name -- I think the best in the group -- and he definitely lost some fans. I’ll add, however, that he might have lost those fans anyway as we moved from pick-3 to1-pick. The dynamics always change a lot when we get to the 1-pick.
Matthew and Hui come up to the front to find out who came in 9th -- and it's Matthew.
Matthew says, “I want to thank all the Star Creators for allowing me to stay in the Top 9. Hanbin hyung, Ji Woong Hyung, Yujin-ee and Seung Eon-ee, I was just so happy to be with you. I want to become more cool like Hanbin hyung and JiWoong hyung.  Thank you, and I also hope we’ll all be successful together.” Really putting on those retro-rockets, huh? I hope it helps -- I think he’s a great performer and would make a good member of Bepler.
Hui says, “I came worrying that I may have to go home today. I really want to thank the Star Creators for allowing me to get such an unexpectedly high rank. I also wanted to thank my En Guard team members who’ve worked so hard with me. I would like everyone to stay with me to the end, and although I cannot give amazing benefits like Boys Planet, I will becomes an amazing Hoe Taek and I will show you a good side of me.”
As Matthew goes to take his seat, you can hear Yoo Seungeon rush over to give Matthew-hyung a hug. Jay also comes over and says something in English but I can’t quite make it out.
Next is 8th place. Who could it be? Well it’s one of Ricky, Han Yu Jin, Kim Ji Woong, Kim Gyu Vin, Kim Tae Rae, or Keita. And at 1:16:42, we find out it’s Ricky!
Ricky says, “It’s so cool to enter the Top9 for the first time. I can’t believe it. Honestly, the sofa looked so comfy that I wanted to try sitting in it at least once. I will show an even more improved version of me during the final stage.” The show makes a big deal out of how “sofa” is probably not a Korean word or the right word for these chairs, but, whatever, everyone knew what he meant.
We hear Jay call “Ricky!” and it’s honestly very pleasant to hear someone pronounce it like that. (Not going to say “correctly,” just… correct to my ears, you know?)
Tumblr media
Side note: with his hair styled down like this, I actually don’t recognize him. I mean, I know it’s him, but my brain doesn’t believe me.
Now it’s time to find out who is in 7th place. Well it’s one of Han Yu Jin, Kim Ji Woong, Kim Gyu Vin, Kim Tae Rae, or Keita.
And at 1:18:39, we find out it’s Kim Gyuvin.
Tumblr media
I like the return to a messy mop of hair.
He says, “I want to thank you all for allowing me to end up in such a high rank. Through this final stage, I will prove to you why I need to debut.” Then he adds in uncertain Japanese, “I will become a more improved GyuVin. I love you.” Hiroto coaches him from the other side of the room.
I mean, I know that that interim ranking showed him really low, but it never occurred to me for a second he’d fall below 17. I think he might have been worried, though. He’s gotten some hate online. He sits down in the comfy chair and gives that weird smile of his.
Next is 6th place. Who could it be? Well, it’s one of Han Yu Jin, Kim Ji Woong, Kim Tae Rae, or Keita. Because it’s someone whose rank improved, it’s either TaeRae or Keita.
At 1:21:17, we find out it’s Keita. Nice! I knew he’d make it. I’m glad to see his rank improving. His Korean support is low, but his global support is insane. He’s the first person to outscore Jay in the global vote. (He outscored Jay’s Korean support, as well.)
Tumblr media
Keita says, “I am just so happy and grateful to be able to move onto the final. I will keep doing my best.” Then he bows. That’s Keita for you.
Next is 5th place. Well, it’s either Han Yu Jin, Kim Ji Woong, Kim Tae Rae, or maybe Zhang Hao. The person is popular with teenagers, and his charming point is his shy smile. TaeRae doesn’t have a shy smile, but Yujin does.
At 1:22:58 we find out it’s Han Yujin, who at previous eliminations was 4th and 3rd.
Lee Jeonghyun turns around to look up at Park Hanbin and wonder out loud, “What place is TaeRae in?” Again, all three of them are signed together at WakeOne. And hopefully will all debut together ASAP.
Tumblr media
Han Yujin says, “To the Star Creators who have shown me much love ever since Na Bina was released,  I will work even harder from now on.” Then he adds in Chinese, “Hello. I’m 17-year old Han Yujin. I love you all. You’re so pretty. Thank you.” It doesn’t sound too bad to me but I don’t know Chinese.
Somi teases him about his legendary “Noona, I love you” thing and she asks him to say it to her. (Other trainees watching, including Kum Junyheon and Kim Gyuvin, mutter that they’d be happy to tell her that too.) He says, “Somi-Noona, I love you!” and Somi melts. It’s actually pretty cute, even though I have very little patience for this shiz.
As he goes to his seat, he’s mobbed by some of his friends, including his Yuehua teammate Ricky, who jokingly asks him to say “I love you hyung” to him, and his other Yuehua teammate Kim Gyubin, who seems happier for Yujin than he was for himself.
Next is 4th place, who only scraped past 5th place by a few thousand points -- I’ll do a point analysis at the end of this recap -- and it’s obviously  Kim Ji Woong or Kim Tae Rae, or maybe Zhang Hao.
Almost immediately we find out it’s Tae Rae.
Tumblr media
Hair stylist noona was really feeling the ruffley bang look today, wasn’t she?
TaeRae says, “To my Star Creators who have always supported me, thank you so much. I will do my best to repay you for your love and support with an even better performance on the final stage.” Then Somi makes him do a big weird laugh and it’s… weird. But he’s still cute.
He goes to take his place, and someone runs to hug him -- I’m pretty sure it’s his WakeOne teammate Park Hanbin.
Somi says she’s going to announce top 3, and Chen Kuan Jui says, in a big, bright, almost-not-sarcastic voice, “who on earth could it be? I’m so curious,”  Big snaps for that, CKJ.
Obviously it’s Kim JiWoong, Zhang Hao, and Sung Hanbin.
Ok, so the show reminds us that the top placing trainee in the final episode will get to do a solo song on the group’s debut album, and we’re shown a clip of Kepler performing, with a focus on the first-place-winning Kim Chaeyoung. Thing is, though Chaeyoung came in first (and though she’s talented and sweet and I like her), she is definitely not the most popular member of Kepler these days. I checked a few different random rankings and she was ranked anywhere from 4th to last depending on which list I looked at. She has fans, definitely -- I’m sure plenty of people like her! -- I’m just saying that she’s not the runaway queen of the group or anything. Focusing on her just reminds us that it doesn’t matter AT ALL who comes in first, not even on the final episode, and definitely not now, a week out from first.
(Side note: Another example of this is Ni-Ki from Enhypen. He finished in fourth place in the show I-Land, and spent some time in the unfavored zone for the trainees, but is now the runaway king of the group, with his fancams showing millions of views. The public who votes for reality show trainees aren’t necessarily representative of the entire Kpop viewing population.)
Despite the show basically shoving that fact in our face, it continues to act as if we really care who will specifically will be first, second, and third. Also I think we all know who is third. But WHO COULD IT BE?
Tumblr media
At 1:28:49, we find out it’s Kim JiWoong.
He says, “I am grateful and think of it as an honor to be able to provide comfort and happiness to others. Thank you.” I actually adore this guy. He’s a complete mystery of a human and I adore that.
Then there’s some dumb bit where Somi makes him do aegyo and it goes on way too long.
So now it’s time to announce who came in first between Zhang Hao and the impossibly, ridiculously perfect Sung Hanbin.
They say a lot of the normal, “what if confident, but polite?” type things, and then we find out that apparently Sung Hanbin helped Zhang Hao with the “Over Me” choreography to add some waacking elements. They weren’t even on the same team, and Hanbin still took time out of his schedule of providing solar power with his smile to go help his friend.
And at 1:34:19, we find out that Hanbin has taken first again.
Tumblr media
He says, “Well, for this past Artist Battle mission, there was such a big benefit on the line, so I wasn’t really able to predict this. Please continue to cheer for me so I can run for the finish line, shining as bright as I can. My Say My Name members, I love you.”
Tumblr media
Hao says, in his halting way, “I am so grateful and happy to be able to rank 2nd place again. I will continue running without stopping. Please continue being happy through my passion.” Then he adds in extremely halting Japanese, “motto ganbarimasu” -- kind of “I’ll keep going/ I won’t give up.”  His vote tally shows that he is more than 800,000 points ahead of 3rd/4th/5th place (which are almost a tie).
But it’s nothing compared to Sung Hanbin, who is more than a million points ahead of Hao.
Sung Hanbin is dominating first place in a way we’ve never seen on the produce series. To put this in perspective:
In Produce 101 season 1, Jeon Somi and Kim Sejeong traded off between 1st and second, with Somi actually falling to 4th place at the 2nd elimination before finally finishing in first.
In Produce 101 season 2, Park Jihoon, Kim Jonghyeon, and Kang Daniel held first place at different times.
In Produce 48, Sakura, Lee Gaeun, and Jang Wonyoung held first place at different times.
In Produce X 101, Kim Yohan and Kim Wooseok traded off in first place.
In Girls Planet 999, Yurina was in first place in ep 5 and didn’t even make it into Kepler. Shen Xiaoting was in first place for most of the rest of the time, and then only made it into Kepler in 9th place, and Kim Chaeyhun came in first despite not ever ranking above 8th place before that.
Granted, all four Produce seasons were known for straight up vote rigging, so maybe one person really was the most popular the whole time. But regardless, Sung Hanbin’s DOMINATION of first place is completely unprecedented in previous seasons of this show, with or without vote rigging. If he comes in first on Friday morning, it will be something we’ve never seen before on this show.
Anyway, our top 9 is seated. Hey, if this is the debuting team, I’ll definitely follow them.
Tumblr media
1:36:26 Chair 18
This is the part where they announce who is ranked 18th, ie, the very last survivor. I’m not going to go in much depth here because this part isn’t fun to recap, you know?
Haruto notices that Supercharger is still completely seated in the gallery -- no one has made it through the elimination. That’s the worst.
Here’s who’s left, with their episode 8 rank.
16 Haruto 18 Seo Won 19 Wang Zi Hao 20 Na Kamden 21 Lee Seung Hwan 22 Chen Kuan Jui 23 Zhang Shuai Bo 25 Takuto 26 Cha Woong Ki 27 Ollie 28 Hiroto
Who’s most likely to take that last spot? I hope Haruto, but really it could be any of them other than Z-Bo, Takuto, and Ollie, in my opinion. Let’s find out.
Somi announces the FOUR candidates for spot 18 -- that’s so cruel.
They announce Wang Zihao, Na Kamden, Cha Woongki, and Hiroto -- representing China, USA, Korea, and Japan.
Tumblr media
Of course, this means that Haruto, Seo Won, Lee Seung Hwan, Chen Kuan Jui, Zhang Shuai Bo, Takuto and Ollie all have been eliminated.
I can’t believe it about Haruto. The way he hangs his head just breaks my heart. I don’t even want to screen cap it. I didn’t see it coming so it was just a punch in the gut.
I’m sad for all of them, really, but aside from Haruto, I’m also especially sad for Lee Seunghwan, who, you may not know, already went through the reality show ringer once and was a member of 1the9, a group whose promotions were severely impacted by covid-19. Poor Seunghwan -- luck just never seems to be on his side, though he’s handsome, sweet, and talented.
Side note: I was all up to date and ready to get this recap out on Saturday or something, but I just… didn’t… want to write it. I watched the whole thing taking quick notes to use as the basis of my recap later, and when Haruto was eliminated I just fast forwarded to find out who did survive and then turned the episode off and didn’t come back for several days. So if that’s how you’re feeling about it, me too. I guess maybe Haruto didn’t look like a viable candidate, so people gave up? Or maybe people thought that other people would vote for him, that he’d be safe? It’s strange to me that Hiroto beat Haruto in the final ranking. Nothing against Hiroto at all, but I’m just surprised.
Anyway, let’s finish this.
21st place turns out to be Hiroto, the only eliminated member of En Garde. From his spot on stage, Park Gunwook mutters to himself, “If we’d just gotten 1st place….” A general to the end, worrying about his troops. I will hear no talk about Gunwook being “mean” or anything like that.
Hiroto says (in slow, careful Korean), “I didn’t get a good result because I was lacking, but…” (Woongki interrupts quietly, saying “that’s not true,” and Somi looks heartbroken) “...I am happy if the Star Creators were happy while cheering for me.” It’s a very sweet speech.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Somi says, “You are not lacking!” and Hiroto’s face lights up. She continues: “None of you are lacking! All of you here are amazing!” There, that’s my girl. That’s my Somi. 💓 She is so much more human than pretty much any judge or host we’ve had on the show so far -- well, Sunmi was great too, but she was barely there. Somi knows exactly how these trainees feel and relates to them as equals, even though she’s successful and they’re not there yet. I’m glad she’s here. I bet she made this easier for them.
Next we announce 20th place: It’s Woongki.
His final speech is at 1:39:55 and it’s great. He says, “When I said that I would appear on Boys Planet, people told me that what I want is different from what I can do, that my time is up, and that I would learn to face reality. But I feel like that’s not true. Through Boys Planet, I was able to learn more about my potential as Cha Woongki. Woongki boy is just beginning. Thank you!” and then with a bright smile, he bows. Yeah, Woongki!
Somi says, shaking a cue card in the air for emphasis, “Don’t give up on your dream!” And Woongki cheerfully says, “I won’t!”
Finally, we announce 18th place, which means announcing 19th place at the same time.
18th place turns out to be Na Kamden. Jay practically falls out of his chair in relief, and we see Z-bo’s face is lit up with happiness. Ollie gives him a congratulatory hug -- probably the whole English speaking crew got pretty close at the show. Other trainees gather to console Wang Zi Hao, who is taking it in stride, as he takes basically everything in life.
Kamden says, “Honestly, when I wasn’t called before, I was organizing my thoughts and emptied myself of expectations.   But thank you so much for allowing me to stand on such a large stage as the final.” Then he adds in English, “Love you Mom!” and then in Korean says, “I made it to the final!”
We check in with Wang Zi Hao. he says, in Chinese, “I was grateful to be able to experience these times together with everyone. I will treasure the fact that I was able to make good memories with you all at this starting point of my life. Thank you.” He’s such a sweetheart. Haruto mentioned that Wang Zi Hao joined Supercharger voluntarily in order to help Haruto -- isn’t that sweet. There’s often a G R E A T   A G E N C Y   R E S H U F F L I N G following a show like this, so I’m hoping that WZH ends up signing at another agency so we can see more of him in the future.
Somi wishes the ten eliminated trainees the best, and we pan over them. Haruto seems to be having the worst time of it -- the rest saw it coming, at least.
Here is the complete final ranking -- filling in the last few spots with some help from the internet.
Sung Hanbin
Zhang Hao
Kim Jiwoong
Kim Taerae
Han Yujin
Keita
Kim Gyubin
Ricky
Seok Matthew
Hui
Park Hanbin
Park Gunwook
Jay
Yoo Seungeon
Yoon Jongwoo
Kum Junhyeon
Lee Jeonghyeon
Na Kamden
Wang Zihao
Cha Woongki
Hiroto
Haruto
Chen Kuan Jui
Lee Seunghwan
Seo Won
Ollie
Takuto
Zhang Shuai Bo
Sung Hanbin is 1,046,481 points* ahead of Hao, who is 816,760 points ahead of 3rd place. However, JiWoong, TaeRae, and Yujin are all within about 25,000 points of each other, making them virtually tied. Then there’s 432,355 points between Yujin and Keita, so that puts Keita down kind of a tier. Keita is only 51,928 points ahead of Gyuvin, making them almost tied. The next few ranks are all about 130k-150k apart from each other, like a stair case, but then there’s a big gap (311,148) between Matthew and Hui. But from Hui down to Na Kamden, they’re all pretty close together, like 6000-60,000 apart --  especially if you remember that Lee Jeonghyeon got that 200,000 point benefit.
*I say points because they’re not straight up votes, due to the K/G weighting thing.
What I’m saying is that unless something drastic happens, I think that Sung Hanbin and Hao will be 1-2 on Friday; JiWoong, TaeRae, and Yujin all look like locks as well, and from Keita down to Matthew, things could easily move around, but it’s not looking super-duper likely that many people from Hui down to Kamden will end up in the top 9 -- unless Park Hanbin continues his meteoric rise and Matthew continues his sharp fall.  If you're curious, here's the ranking of the top 18 if only Korean votes decided things:
Sung Hanbin
Kim Tae Rae
Kim Gyu Vin
Han Yu Jin
Kim Ji Woong
Zhang Hao
Yoo Seung Eon
Na Kamden
Kum Jun Hyeon
Park Hanbin
Hui
Lee Jeong Hyeon
Ricky
Park Gunwook
Yoon Jong Woo
Seok Matthew
Keita
Jay
And here's the ranking if only Global votes decided things:
Keita
Zhang Hao
Sung Hanbin
Jay
Seok Matthew
Kim Ji Woong
Han Yu Jin
Ricky
Park Gunwook
Yoon Jong Woo
Kim Tae Rae
Hui
Kim Gyu Vin
Park Hanbin
Kum Jun Hyeon
Yoo Seung Eon
Lee Jeong Hyeon
Na Kamden
I'll let you draw your own conclusions from that.
So... the next phase is the one-pick vote. I could rant at length about how dumb the one-pick system is in terms of creating a sustainable group. Groups that are truly successful tend to have multiple members that are popular among fans. There’s a popular boy group that I personally like only 2 members of, so I really can’t consider myself a fan of that group. Meanwhile in Exo, I basically can’t pick a favorite because I really like almost all of them. So letting us vote for multiple members would tend to create a situation in which the group is all loved by all the fans.
The rest of the episode was the boys preparing for their next song, and I have to admit, I don’t much care about those two last songs. The performances happen AT the finale, once the audience has already voted, so there’s kind of no point to them.
Here are the two groups for the two songs:
Hot Summer Sung Hanbin  Kim Taerae  Kim Ji Woong  Ricky  Lee Jeong Hyeon  Kim Gyuvin  Han Yujin  Keita  Yoon Jongwoo
Jelly Pop Hui  Yoo Seung Eon  Zhang Hao  Park Gunwook  Kum Junhyeon  Park Hanbin  Jay  Na Kamden  Seok Matthew
Who knows, maybe I’ll recap the rest later, but I wanted to get this posted.
Hope you’re all doing well, and I hope that your one-pick makes it.
Death of Samantha and the Blizzard Drive
Tumblr media
Death of Samatha, 1988, on the shores of Lake Erie, most definitely not in the wintertime
Among the many fun-if-maddening things about YouTube is the odd ways in which fanatical nabobs post things. Let's just say they're not all SEO experts.
While anyone who has followed this blog, read my book, or spent more than 25 minutes talking to me at some point knows, I 'm a huge Death of Samantha fan. So I recently stumbled on these YouTube clips that do not list DoS at all in their titles, and hence were a treat to discover.
I was actually at the February 26, 1990 show in these live clips. New Bomb Turks guitarist Jim Weber drove up from Columbus, OH, to Cleveland with me and our roomie pal, Brian Duran. It's about a two-hour trip, but well worth it cuz DoS were always good, and hadn't been down to Columbus in awhile. Hard to tell from the dark, somewhat static film work here, but believe you me, it was a great show.
youtube
Nothing to do with snow, but gives you an idea of the pretty good local TV we had in Cleveland at the time that informed Death of Samantha's sense of the absurd...
The club was the Babylon a-Go-Go, a small, narrow joint tucked into an alley off W. 25th St., then a fairly desolate area (except for the excellent Great Lakes Brewing Company, where Eliot Ness used to hang out at the end of his career; it's still there). The "stage" was just the area right next to the bar, so you sort of sat on stools craning your neck at the band, or stood around.
As per usual with such wonky joints, it nonetheless made for a great place to see a band. Dates escape me at this point, but as the club gained a lil' following, they knocked down a wall, added a proper stage, and continued on as a solid club for I think about 4 more years. I saw an amazing L7 show there, Jonathan Richman, lots of good local bands, and they held Stiv Bators' official wake there in June, 1990, a monumentally interesting and fun event I have previously written about here -- check the bottom here and see the video tribute John Waters sent that was played at the event (along with ones from Iggy Pop and Lydia Lunch).
Bloated with fine rock'n'roll and craft beer (then a new trend in Cleveland), we hit the road home -- only to drive right into a huge blizzard. As traffic stops got increasingly packed, we tried a couple side road exits that got us nowhere, and ended up back on I-71 into more scary, slippery two-mph slogs.
Death of Samantha, 1988
At one point, while sitting in a miles-long jam, it was decided that getting out to pee on the side of the road would no doubt coincide with the traffic starting to move, and one of us chasing the car; but more pertinently, it was just cold and blistery as hell out. Then suddenly, the empty Pringles can (that night's dinner on the way to the show), smiled up from the car floor, offering relief.
Let's just say that that moment, in that dark backseat, with the strains of the Replacements wafting out of the tape deck, I learned the rough volume size of my bladder, as did the floor of that back seat.
It took us nearly seven hours to get back to Columbus, finally bounding out of the car with no regrets. That's how good Death of Samantha was. (Easy for me to say though, I didn't do any of the driving.)
The infamous blizzard of '78 in Cleveland
Climate change has added another layer of nostalgia to this tale, as it seems we just do not get big snowstorms like that anymore. Yeah, it still snows in Cleveland, but not in those massive pile-ups that remain stuck on the edges of sidewalks and mall parking lots gaining smog and car exhaust veneers until they gamely try to ward off the late-March melt...
             WELCOME SEO HWANJI
                                                         TO THE PROMISE LAND
DETAILS
age / age they appear: 27 occupation: worker at magic tome group: nam pack
PERSONALITY
Hwanji, upon first observation,  is a quiet figure, mostly happy to be left alone. He is patient and calm, not easily getting riled up about things. He has an air of wiseness beyond his years, although it doesn't make him intimidating. Instead, it almost gives him the quality of a grandfather or an older family member. He dislikes conflict, avoiding it at all costs, almost to the exclusion of all else. He's always willing to lend a helping hand around the island, but he rarely fully trusts people.
On the off chance that you do get on his trusted side, he's a bit different. He can talk your ear off for hours about the most random of topics: things he's learned from books or just from living his life. He comes off as more nervous than many might expect, and rather socially inept. For example, jokes have a tendency to fly right over his head, even though he loves to try and be funny. ("Try" being the...operative word.)
Another quirk of Hwanji is that he doesn't often offer up the information that he's a werewolf. If people don't notice, he certainly isn't going to be the one to inform them. This has only strengthened with the recent wolf sightings.
HISTORY
tw: mentions of death/violence
When Hwanji lived in Seoul, he was much more the excitable, social side that he now hides. Necessity has forced him to pull a mask over that now, but when he was younger, he was quite talkative. He would regularly go around his neighborhood, making conversation with anyone he could. As he grew older, he became mischievous, getting into trouble and hanging out with people that could be considered "rabble-rousers" or troublemakers.
He ended up on the wrong side of some people, landing himself in deep debt with one of the larger gangs in the neighborhood. He didn't realize how much of an issue this would become until later. After trying to avoid paying up, he was ambushed in an alleyway and left for dead.
After his turning (when he was about 17), Hwanji fled to Jeju, seeking protection from those that still chased him. Ever since, he's lived a quiet life with the Nam pack, trying to weather out the increasing tension between the packs. He dislikes talking about the war, and even more hates discussing the current standings. He's almost what you could call old-fashioned: he believes in the peace treaties that Jeju was protected by, and is often frustrated when the other (especially younger) people don't understand it. He has never forgotten the dangers that await him back in Seoul, and isn't too keen to travel back any time soon. He's no fool—he knows that a reckoning is coming between the two werewolf packs—but he doesn't want to think about it nor deal with it.
DESCRIPTION:
upon first observation, he is a quiet figure, face all sharp angles and lines. happiest when left alone, he carries with him tranquility beyond his years. sharp brown eyes with a piercing gaze that catches on everything they land on. he has an inordinate amount of patience, rarely getting riled up except about those he cares for. an air of sagacity, he remains neutral on all topics, avoiding conflict at every turn, to the exclusion of all else. always polite, always willing to assist; but very rarely trusting.
get a bit closer and you realize that the lines soften into curves. the corners of his mouth turned up like barbed wire, defensively protecting the facade. that sharp gaze is just an observant stare, keeping an eye out for anything that may be dangerous. that serenity turns into nerves, anxiety bigger than one might expect. always making jokes, keeping a solid wall of humor between him and the person across from him. conversations feel like drowning; ready at any instant for things to go the wrong way. focused so intently on the talk that jokes posed to him lose all meaning. simply poised to run, his fight or flight long ago broken. only one option for him now.
for those that do manage to peel back the skin of his onion, the whole demeanor is altered. though socially inept he may be, he has a wealth of knowledge available to him at any given moment; not quite an eidetic memory but certainly a sharp one. talkative: things he’s learned from books or just from his unstable life, he could go on for hours and hours about random things. the humor is discarded, conversing much easier now that he feels he can talk freely. the anxiety is a defensive mechanism, dropped only when he feels comfortable—consider yourself lucky.
(if you have the audacity to take advantage of him when he’s at his most vulnerable, he will never forget it, and you will regret the day you chose to make that decision.)
HISTORY:
when hwanji lived in seoul, he was much more excitable and social. necessity has forced him to pull a mask over that now, but when he was younger, he was quite popular. he would regularly roam his neighborhood, making conversation with anyone he could. as he grew older, he became more mischievous, often getting into trouble and hanging out with people that could be considered “rabble-rousers” or troublemakers. gambling, fighting—he did it all, and enjoyed every minute of it. rebellion was invigorating to him.
eventually, hwanji’s luck ran out. he ended up on the wrong side of one of the larger gangs in the neighborhood, landing himself in deep debt. being the type of person he was, he didn’t realize right away just how much of an issue this was. instead, he tried to avoid paying up, and managed to smooth-talk his way out of many a dangerous situation. unfortunately, that didn’t work for long; something hwanji wasn’t aware of was that one of the gang members was a werewolf. the boys ambushed him on the night of his 17th birthday, leaving him to die in an alleyway.
of course, he didn’t die. life couldn’t have been that simple.
After his turning, hwanji fled to jeju, seeking protection from those that still chased him. ever since, he’s lived a quiet life with the nam pack, trying to weather out the increasing tension between the packs. he dislikes talking about the war, and even more hates discussing the current standings around the island. he’s almost what you could call old-fashioned: he believes in the peace treaties that jeju was protected by, and is often frustrated when the other (especially the younger) people don’t understand it. he has never forgotten the dangers that await him back in seoul, and isn’t too keen to travel back any time soon. he’s no fool—he knows that a reckoning is coming between the two werewolf packs—but he doesn’t want to think about it nor deal with it.
he doesn’t offer up the information that he is a werewolf. if you noticed, then congratulations to you, and he doesn’t go out of his way to hide it. but if you don’t pick up on the telltale signs, he certainly isn’t going to be the one to inform you of them. and, what with the security of werewolves quickly declining thanks to the moves from the kang pack, he isn’t eager to change that habit.
SKZ DRABBLE-OT8
Felix has never been one to complain when something is wrong. But sometimes, he needs a gentle little reminder from someone he loves that he's perfect in every conceivable way that matters. And for all the other times, talking anime and school girl skirts with the baby and his favorite noona is just what the doctor ordered.
A/N: For that one nonnie who wanted more JeongLix fluff. I hope this fulfills all your wildest dreams. 💗
(Also, it's canon that if you say Minho's name three times in the mirror, he appears and roasts the shit out of you.)
Title: Zero Complaints
Tumblr media
“Do you think Yuki honestly didn’t know Kaname was her brother that whole ass time?”
You glance up from where you’re hanging your head over the bed, popping the sucker out from between your lips as you meet Jeongin’s furrowed gaze.
“Yes.”
Jeongin heaves a sigh and tosses aside the finished copy of the manga he was reading, annoyance written all over his pretty features, making you want to laugh.
He’s really going through it.
“But-” Felix points out from where he’s lounging beside you, leaning over to snatch your sucker, as you shoot him a halfhearted glare, even as he smiles innocently at you and sticks the candy between his own teeth. He points to the youngest omega. “-she knew at the end.”
Jeongin scoffs, wiggling out from under the weight of your combined legs, huffing as he goes. “Yeah, but then she still chose him over Zero! And we all know, that man was fucking hot, not to mention a trained killer.”
You laugh, dropping your head back over the edge of the bed as he gets up, watching him upside down as he returns the manga to its proper place amongst the extensive collection on Seungmin’s shelf.
“You say that like it’s another reason she should have picked him.”
“It is!” Jeongin protests heatedly. “Guys with a little bit of psychotic energy and the means to kill you are always the better love interest choice, everyone knows that!”
Felix grins around the stick of your sucker at the clearly irritated baby omega. “You’ve been spending too much time with Hyunjin.”
Jeongin sticks his tongue out at the other omega. “You can’t say shit, hyung, you’re like the fluffiest, softest, most harmless guy I know.”
Felix shrugs and takes a long lick of the sucker. “Guilty.”
“You know who could kill you though-” You reply thoughtfully, sitting up as Jeongin throws himself back on the spacious bed by your feet, looking clearly bummed out by the conversation.
Without a thought, both omegas reply back in sync, “-Minho-hyung.”
“What about me?” Minho stops in the open doorway, a basket of laundry propped on his hip, his dark eyes scanning your trio with something akin to dangerous suspicion, expression unreadable.
Jeongin snickers beneath his breath, flicking his eyes first to you and then to Felix, who is trying to bite back a grin and remain nonchalant as he takes another slurp of the lollipop innocently.
“Nothing, hyung.”
Minho narrows his eyes, but he doesn’t enter the room, taking another step in the direction he was going as he says warningly, “That’s what I thought.”
When he disappears from sight, you all let out a collective sigh of relief and Jeongin instantly falls back on the pillows in a fit of wild, chaotic laughter.
“Fuck, that was close.”
“How does he always just appear when you’re talking about him?” Felix gasps out around his own laughter, sucker held between tiny fingers, as he waves it toward the now empty doorway. “It’s like he has a sixth sense or something.”
“He can smell bullshit a mile away.” You agree with a nod and an amused grin in the omegas direction. “Fucking scary, that one.”
Something thoughtful comes across Jeongin’s face. “Do you think if I asked hyung nicely, he’d dress up as Zero with me for Halloween?”
Felix instantly shakes his head, and you choke out a cynical laugh.
“Not a chance.”
“Nope.”
“Who would you be if hyung was Zero?” Felix asks curiously, eyes sparkling with delighted amusement as he eyes the youngest.
Jeongin crosses his arms over his chest with a huff. “Yuki, obviously. But I’d make the right choice.”
“I’d like to see you in a school girl uniform.” You muse thoughtfully, something wicked flashing across your gaze, as Jeongin snaps his eyes to your own. You arch a brow at his look of shock. “What? I bet you’d be adorable.”
“Adorably sexy.” Felix adds, pointing the almost finished sucker at Jeongin to prove his point.
Jeongin snatches the candy from the older boy’s fingers and pops what’s left of it into his cheek with a glare in your direction.
“I changed my mind.”
“Ah, Innie, don’t be like that.” You coo, biting back a smile as you flop down on the bed so your head is in his lap, pinning him beneath your weight and forcing him to look at you as you reach up to pinch the full skin of his cheeks.
He tries to push you away, but not with enough strength to actually do anything.
You smirk up at him, playing with the stick stuck between his full lips.
“C’mon, I bet we could convince Sungie and Bin to do it with you.”
There is intrigue in his eyes now.
“Fuck.” Felix says in almost a groan beneath his breath, stretching out beside the two of you, open hunger on his pretty features as he stares up at the ceiling, eyes far away. “Can you imagine hyung’s thighs in something like that?”
You watch the bob of Jeongin’s throat as he audibly swallows.
You don’t blame him. Saliva is pooling beneath your own tongue at just the thought.
“Maybe we can convince the whole pack to do a group costume. School girl outfits for everyone.” You say somewhat hopefully, because now that it’s been spoken into existence, you absolutely need to see it come to fruition.
“Fuck.” Felix repeats again, sighing hard, as he reaches up to throw an arm over his face, the skin of his throat flushing pink. “Minho-hyung’s thighs too-”
“You know, if you’re all so desperate to see me, you could just ask.”
“Fuck.” It’s your turn to swear sharply, jerking upright in surprise at the unexpected voice from across the room.
Minho is leaning in the doorway, arms over his chest, a smirk on his lips, eyebrow arched at the three of you.
Felix puts a hand over his heart, and you’re sure it’s pounding matches yours.
“How do you do that, hyung?”
Minho cocks his head, eyes going predatory, and you hear Jeongin swallow again.
“Consider it a gift. Or a threat. Your choice.”
You all stare at him as he backs from the doorway, teeth flashing in a dangerous grin as he disappears from sight once more, words echoing over his shoulder as you hear his feet on the stairs.
“Come find me when you’re ready to pitch your ideas.”
Jeongin lets out the breath he’s been holding.
“Fuck, he’s scary.”
Felix nods in agreement, but you don’t miss the hot flush creeping across his throat in reaction to Minho’s dangerous teasing.
“Yeah, but-” He looks thoughtful. “-’psychotic, kill you energy,’ am I right?”
Jeongin blows out a harsh breath and grumbles somewhat begrudgingly, “Yeah, yeah. It’s fucking hot or whatever.”
You grin and settle your head back into the youngest’s lap once more.
“Now, more importantly, let’s go back to school girl skirts.”
*******
“I’m just saying-think about it! Do ghosts have teeth?”
Beside you, Seungmin lets out a long, irritated sigh, and levels a glare across the table at Jeongin that could scorch earth.
“Shut the fuck up, Innie. This is the last time I ever let you join our study group.”
“No, no, he’s got a point.” Yeosang chimes in, tapping his pencil thoughtfully on his chin, the open book in front of him long forgotten.
You shoot him an openly exasperated look of desperation. “Oh my god, Kang, don’t encourage him!”
Jongho blows a harsh breath out through his teeth where he sits on Yeosang’s opposite side, and shoots both you and Seungmin a dead sort of helpless look.
“You’ve lost him. You’re not gonna get him back at this point.”
“Oh my god.” Seungmin groans, leaning back in his chair and rubbing at his temples violently, as if to stall the incoming headache. “We’re all going to fail this exam.”
“Speak for yourself.” Jisung scoffs from the beta’s opposite side, snapping his book closed with an air of finality and a smug grin. “I’m gonna ace it.”
“You’re not even in the class.” Seungmin deadpans, and Jisung shrugs, nonplussed.
“Yeah, but if I were, I’d smoke you all.”
“Absolutely no fucking way would that happen.”
“Okay, beta boy, keep telling yourself that.”
“God, I’m going to throttle you.”
“Oh, hell yeah, I’m into that.”
You glance across the table, away from the betas’ bickering, to where Yeosang and Jeongin are now deep into a debate over the logistics of ghostly dental procedures, and let out a long, resigned sigh.
Fuck, Seungmin’s right. You’re screwed.
“Hey.”
You glance over your shoulder at the deep, accented greeting, and see Felix and Minho approaching your table, duffle bags slung over their shoulders, still wearing their work out gear, damp hair tousled with quickly drying sweat.
Their dance seminar must have just ended.
“Hi.” You respond, giving them a little wave of your fingers, as Felix leans over you, his chin on your shoulder, and his gaze sweeps over what you’re currently studying.
You feel rather than see him pull a face.
“That looks hard.”
“It is.” You reply dejectedly, leaning back into his embrace, as his fingers find the knots in your shoulders and begin to massage gently. You groan and sink further into your chair, rolling your neck as Felix’s small, warm fingers work over your tense muscles.
There’s a headache starting to pound behind your eyes.
You glance to where Minho is breaking up the still arguing betas, across the table to Jeongin and Yeosang, and then complain quietly, tiredly to Felix, “Unfortunately, even after hours of studying, I don’t think I’ve retained anything.”
Felix hums in sympathy beneath his breath, and continues to massage your shoulders, the sweet scent of oranges beginning to curl around you the longer he stands behind you.
It’s nice, it helps the headache that’s threatening, and you feel yourself relaxing the more he continues, like a human stress relief lotion.
Omegas will do that to you.
You tilt your head back and close your eyes, before you ask him, “How was the seminar?”
You hear him sigh and crack open an eye to see his lips pull down into a slight frown.
You sit up straighter, suddenly on high alert.
“Felix?”
He shakes it off and shrugs, giving you a small smile that doesn’t reach his eyes as his fingers resume their motions down the center of your spine.
“It was fine. Really. I’m just tired.”
Before you can question him more, San and Wooyoung appear, slapping the omega standing behind you on the back in greeting, their own bags still slung over their shoulders, and Felix plasters on a bright smile for the pair.
“Our pretty pixie boy stole the show like always.” San remarks, as if he can sense what you were just talking about, a grin curving his lips upward as he regards Felix with something akin to pride. “Sure you don’t wanna switch out of kinesiology for dance, Lixie? It’s not too late, you know.”
Felix chuckles, and your wolf relaxes slightly at the familiar sound.
“I’m sure. That was exhausting.”
Wooyoung grins sharply in response. “Good choice. Minho-hyung might kill you if you threatened his throne.”
Felix laughs again, holding up his hands to the pair of friends. “I want no part of the ice kingdom, thank you.”
Minho glares at the four of you over Seungmin’s head, that uncanny ability of his surfacing again, and you offer him a sweetly innocent smile before turning back to the conversation at hand.
“Speaking of- '' You lower your voice and glance between Wooyoung and San, their faces etching into curiosity at your sudden change of tone. You grin mischievously and arch a brow at them. “-how much convincing do you think it would take to get Seonghwa in a school girl uniform, complete with skirt?”
Felix grins, and it's the first time since he arrived that you’ve seen the expression reach his eyes. You make a mental note to check in with him later.
San looks intrigued. “Probably not much honestly.”
Wooyoung looks downright devious. “Why?”
You lean back in your chair. “Oh, just ruminating on ideas for interpack Halloween costumes, that’s all.”
Wooyoung shrugs, unbothered. “I mean, he’s worn something like that for Hongjoong-hyung before, so it probably wouldn’t be much of a stretch to convince him to dig it out of the old closet and wear it again.”
You fake gag. “Ew. Gross.”
San grins, all sharp teeth and bright eyes. “You asked.”
“Yeah, but there’s such a thing as too much information, mate.” Felix says with light amusement, clapping the beta on the back warmly.
San shrugs one shoulder. “All’s fair in love and war.” His expression grows wicked. “And interpack relations.”
Something like shock ripples across Wooyoung’s face, as if he’s had a sudden revelation. His mouth forms a little ‘o.’
“Wait.” His jaw drops and his expression shifts covertly to Minho, who is currently annoying Seungmin by messing up his carefully color coded notes. His voice lowers to a whisper. “Do you think when Seonghwa-hyung and Minho-hyung were dating-?”
He leaves the question open ended, hanging in the air between all of you, like a bomb about to go off that none of you know how to defuse.
“No.” Felix says in slight disbelief, shaking his head, even as Minho suddenly freezes, narrowing his eyes on the four of you from down the table.
“Uh oh.” You mutter beneath your breath, reaching for your textbook and shoving it into your waiting backpack. “Time to go.”
“We should ask him and find out.” Wooyoung is saying, and San is immediately shaking his head, dragging the omega away from the encroaching alpha with a hand slapped over his mouth.
“Absolutely the fuck we should not.” You’re just standing up from the table, reaching for Felix’s hand, when Minho catches the strap of your backpack, yanking you back into him, glaring down at you as his hand migrates to curl around your forearm, fingers digging into your skin and making you wince.
“Oh, hey, Min.” You say, somewhat breathlessly, trying to go for innocence.
You’re not sure it’s working, judging by the look on his face.
His gaze shifts from you to Felix, and then he reaches out and snags the omega, pulling him toward the two of you even as Felix lets out a surprised little squeak.
You’re sandwiched between the two of them now, and the spice of Minho’s amber in your nose makes you want to sneeze.
“Felix.” Minho says in a low tone, staring right at the omega, and you see him fidget beneath his gaze, and you reach conspicuously beneath the edge of his coat to pinch him, warning him silently not to tell him anything.
Felix winces, as Minho reaches out to snake a hand beneath his chin, forcing him to meet his gaze.
He knows he can break him. Felix isn’t known for his lies and deception, and for good reason.
“Felix.” Minho repeats, his voice firmer this time, and his fingers dig slightly into the divots beneath your mate’s jaw, making Felix shiver, but clearly not in a bad way.
His scent of oranges spikes in the space between you, making your mouth water.
“What were you talking about?”
Felix flicks his gaze down to you, desperation clear in the dark recesses of his eyes, and then he swallows.
“Nothing, hyung.”
Minho sighs, and without warning, tugs Felix forward roughly, nearly sending him toppling into the two of you. His fingers slide down the omega’s throat, and his expression is thoughtful, as Felix once again shudders beneath his hold.
“Ah.” Minho tsks, letting his gaze sweep over the omega, before he drops it to you, held immobile between their bodies, a smirk curving the corners of his lips. “I’m disappointed, sweetheart. I’d have thought you’d have taught him how to lie better than that.”
You open your mouth to respond, but Minho snakes a leg between your thighs, and all you can manage is a soft gasp at the sudden pressure.
Behind you, you feel Felix freeze.
Minho leans into your space, eyes holding your own, and moves, his thigh creating delicious friction between your own, and you jolt forward, your fingers grasping his shoulders and digging into him as you drop your head, trying to catch your suddenly lost breath.
You manage a glare in his direction, even though your brain is screaming at you for being stupid and stopping this, because you need more.
“Minho, we’re in the library.” You hiss out between your teeth, voice strained, and in response, he rubs you again, and you sink your teeth into your bottom lip to stop the strangled groan from leaving your lips.
“Oh, I’m aware.” He tilts his head, dark eyes flashing. “But public punishment is just so much more fun, is it not, sweetheart?”
You glare at him, holding his gaze in a silent stare down, and he smirks, before finally dropping your eyes and flicking his attention to the omega standing silently behind you.
“Now. Let’s try this again.” He murmurs, and it takes everything in you to hold still and not use the thigh at your disposal to apply pressure where you need it most.
You won’t give him the satisfaction.
He tilts his head and stares at Felix, a predator appearing in his dark eyes.
“Are you tired, Felix?”
You feel Felix swallow, and then, “Yes.”
Minho smirks. “Very good. Good boy.”
You don’t miss the way Felix shivers at the alpha’s praise, and you clench your hands into fists at your side, trying desperately to ignore Minho’s thigh still pressed against your increasingly wet heat.
“Do you want to go home?”
“Yes.”
Minho hums in approval in the back of his throat, eyes glinting dangerously. “What were you talking about?”
“Seonghwa-hyung in a mini skirt.”
Jeongin appears then, resting his chin easily on Felix’s shoulder, answering Minho’s question without a care in the world, as if he’s completely oblivious to the battle of wills currently happening between the three of you.
Both you and Felix groan simultaneously.
“Innie.”
Jeongin looks suitably baffled, eyes going wide.
“What’d I do?”
Minho arches a brow, looking slightly interested, slightly amused, but there’s not enough in his expression to go off of to give you an answer one way or the other.
He pulls his thigh from between your own and you release the breath you didn’t know you were holding.
He lets his fingers fall from Felix’s chin, but his sharp gaze remains on the omega as he asks, softer this time, “Do you want to tell (Y/N) what happened at the seminar?”
Out of the corner of your eye, you see Felix swallow, and then he lifts his chin.
“No.”
Minho stares at him for a moment longer, and then nods in response, reaching into his back pocket for his phone.
“Okay.”
He glances between the two of you as he pulls up the brightly lit screen. “Call the rest of the pack. We’re going to that stupid little rundown bar the two of you are so misguidedly fond of. It’s been awhile since we all blew off some steam together.”
Your eyes light up, and you smell Felix’s sudden excitement in the way his scent sharpens.
“Seriously?”
Behind you, Jeongin does an excited little jig.
Minho rolls his eyes, nodding as he holds the phone up to his ear.
“Yes. But hurry up before I change my mind.”
******
“It was a joke, baby. I swear.” Jisung tosses his hands so wide that he nearly knocks over a couple of drinks, Hyunjin still glaring narrowly at him like he’s not entirely convinced he believes the floundering beta.
“You gave my number to Choi Yeonjun freshman year as a joke?”
“I mean, yeah?” Jisung looks around the table as if for support, but you all give him the same blank look, knowing better than to get involved in their little fights.“Why else would I do it?”
Changbin arches a brow between the two as he takes a sip of his beer. “I wasn’t aware you guys knew each other freshman year.”
 “Oh, we didn’t.” Jisung waves a hand in dismissal, reaching for his own glass of alcohol. “But Minho-hyung knew Seonghwa-hyung, and I asked him who the biggest prick he currently knew was and he gave me Hyunjin’s name.”
Across the table, Chan chokes on his drink and Jeongin cackles loudly with unbridled amusement from beside you.
“Fuck you.” Hyunjin bites out, tossing back the rest of his own drink as he pushes back his chair to head to the bar for another.
“I’d let you.” Jisung wiggles his eyebrows at him suggestively as he stands, narrowly avoiding being hit upside the head as the disgruntled omega passes behind his chair.
Beside you, Felix lets his head drop onto your shoulder with a heavy thunk and a contented sigh, and you glance over to him, noting the cute red splotches on his cheeks and nose from the sake he’s currently drinking.
Felix is normally touchy on any given day, but buzzed Felix is even more affectionate.
It’s always been on the list of endearing things you love about him.
The conversation between your mates has drifted onto other things around you, and you use the opportunity to press a kiss against Felix’s warm forehead, brushing his hair out of the way as you ask in a low, soft voice, only heard between the two of you, “What happened today, Lix?”
He sighs, and you think he’s going to clam up again, but instead, he burrows closer to you and rubs his nose along the fabric covering your shoulder before he says quietly, “It really wasn’t that big of a deal.”
You angle your body to face him, lifting his chin until he reluctantly meets your gaze.
God, he’s pretty.
“Baby.” You murmur gently, letting your fingers trail the line of his jaw, down the column of his throat, across his scent gland. You don’t miss the way he visibly relaxes at the targeted touch. “If it’s bothering you, then it’s a big deal.”
He drops your gaze, sucking his bottom lip in between his teeth, his brow furrowing. You resist the urge to reach out and smooth the expression over.
He doesn’t need you to fix anything right now, he needs you to be patient and wait.
It’s not something your alpha has ever been very good at.
Felix sighs and flicks his gaze briefly across the table to Minho, who is currently listening to something Chan is telling him with a fond, amused look on his face.
“It’s stupid.” He protests halfheartedly once more, but you don’t say anything in response, waiting for him to continue.
Finally, he glances down at his fingers clenched in his lap, and says quietly beneath his breath, “The instructor called me up. As an example. Said I was doing everything perfectly.”
You let out the breath you’ve been holding, and give him a gentle smile, but he still doesn’t meet your eyes.
“That’s good, right?”
“Yeah, but.” Felix blows out a harsh breath between his lips, gripping the fabric of his sweats between his fingers. He shakes his head slightly, and the scent of oranges bitters, putting you on edge. “He called me ‘the perfect omega.’ Kept going on and on about how I have the ‘ideal build’ and the ‘right body for the job’ and ‘my expression was soft and open and exactly how it needed to be for something like this.’”
Ah. There it is.
Very few people outside of the pack know how much comments like that bother Felix. He’s always been regarded by others as ‘the perfect omega’-gentle and empathetic and lithe and soft spoken, swathed in pastels-but like Hyunjin, he’s never just wanted to be seen as a pretty face, a by-product of his subgender.
Of course Minho would’ve instantly picked up on how uncomfortable your shared mate was as soon as the instructor started talking about that shit.
You reach out and slowly, gently unclench his fingers, one by one.
“Baby.” You murmur, and when he doesn’t look at you, you slide a finger beneath his chin and repeat yourself. “Lixie. Look at me.”
He does so, albeit reluctantly, and you tilt your head, studying him, your eyes holding his own.
You see him relax slightly as you begin to radiate calming pheromones.
“None of that is untrue.” You start, and he sucks his bottom lip back between his teeth, even as you reach out and swipe your thumb over the plush skin to free it once more. “But you also absolutely know that none of that defines you either. None of that is even remotely important in making you you.”
The corner of his lip curves up into the start of a small, unconvinced smile.
You clench his fingers tighter between your own, sweeping your gaze slowly across his face.
“Lee Felix is not just ‘the perfect omega.’ In fact, when I think of you, that’s not even a blip on the radar. But do you want to know what is?”
Felix hesitates, and then he nods, and you let out the breath you’ve been holding, squeezing his hands between your own.
“The Lee Felix I know is the only person who can make Minho laugh on a bad day. He’s the only one who knows exactly when Seungmin is too much in his head for his own good and can pull him back out again. The only person I’ve ever seen able to convince Changbin to skip leg day and stay home for snuggles and a movie instead.”
Felix cracks a smile at that, and you feel yourself start to warm with relief from the inside out.
You chuckle, releasing one of his hands to sweep some hair back off his forehead, lingering when you feel how soft the strands are beneath your fingers.
“He’s the single most important person in Hyunjin’s life, the only one besides his moonmate who truly knows what it’s like to only be seen for your pretty face or your label society has given you. He’s also the only person-and I know this for a fact-that Jisung has ever shared his childhood blanket with. Willingly at least.”
Felix laughs, and his eyes shimmer a little, as you stroke a finger down the high arch of his cheekbone, marveling at how smooth his skin is beneath your touch. You trace a line across the constellation of freckles that spatter his nose.
“He’s the only one Jeongin ever lets see him cry, the only person who can pinpoint exactly when Chan is having a bad night for sleep and sneaks into his bed so he’s not alone, and the only person on the whole goddamn planet that MeiMei loves more than me.”
Felix sniffs and wipes a hand across his nose, and you reach up and brush a tear from his lash line before it can completely fall.
“The Lee Felix we all know, and love, is all that and so much more, subgender be damned. And I need you to remember that for me, baby. Always. Promise me.”
Felix nods, sniffing once more, and swipes at his eyes before he downs the rest of the sake in his glass.
His scent is clear now-sweet and crisp and untinged.
Across the table, Minho quickly glances in your direction from where he’s still in conversation with Chan, as if he can sense the shift in Felix’s demeanor for the better, and he arches a knowing brow, a sudden slight lift to his lip that silently praises ‘good girl’ which is clearly meant for you.
Your alpha stops clawing at the pit of your stomach.
Behind you, Jeongin leans into your space, resting the sharp jut of his chin on your shoulder. You can feel the concern for his hyung radiating off of him in waves, the spice of cinnamon filling your nose.
“You okay, Felix-hyung?”
Felix nods again, and lets out a little watery laugh, fixing the youngest with a gentle, affectionate look.
“Yeah. I am now.”
You grin and drain your own glass before glancing at the two omegas you’re currently sandwiched between.
“You guys wanna get out of here?”
Felix nods. “Yes please.”
Jeongin grins deviously, sharp teeth on display.
“Let’s blow this popsicle stand.”
*****
“You’re literally so pretty, hyung.” Jeongin comments wistfully to Felix, where he’s currently braiding the older omega’s long hair, still wet from the bath they had just left a few moments before.
You enter the room, pulling down your sleeves and drying your hands after draining the water for them, and arch a brow as you watch the two of them fondly.
Jeongin glances up at you with large, dark eyes. “Right, noona?”
Maybe it’s the lingering warming effect of the alcohol from earlier, or maybe it’s the effect the combined cocktail of their scents has on your body and mind, but whatever the reason, you agree truthfully, fervently, without a second thought.
 “So fucking pretty.”
Felix blushes, his tan skin going rosy beneath his freckles, and looks away from your heated gaze, his throat bobbing in a silent swallow.
You settle onto the bed beside them, watching, enraptured, as Jeongin’s long, lithe fingers easily work a perfect french braid into Felix’s blonde hair.
Your gaze drifts to the youngest omega’s side profile, sharp and fox like, and you admit, again without thinking, into the silence between the three of you, “You’re also really fucking pretty, baby boy.”
Jeongin’s fingers falter, and he shoots you a surprised, wide eyed look, as if he’s caught off guard by your honest sentiment.
“Right, Felix?” You echo the youngest’s query from earlier, glancing to the omega currently sprawled between the other’s legs.
Felix nods instantly, tilting his head back to study Jeongin’s slowly reddening face with an almost reverent expression.
“Yeah.”
Jeongin flushes all the way to the roots of his hair, and muttering something that sounds pretty close to ‘shut up’ under his breath, he goes back to playing with Felix’s hair, doggedly avoiding both of your eyes now.
Silence stretches, Felix humming a soft little tune to himself under his breath, and you find yourself watching them again, lost in the way Jeongin’s fingers deftly weave Felix’s hair into intricate patterns, the way that Felix’s shirt-one you vaguely recognize as Minho’s-slouches off his shoulder, revealing the shiny pink skin of his mating mark.
The sight sends a shiver of delight down your spine, your wolf instantly triumphant.
Mine.
“Fuck, I love you.” You say out loud without really meaning to, caught up in the moment, your heart all sorts of stuttered in your chest, your entire body warm.
Jeongin scoffs. “I mean, I would hope so, noona.”
“No, but like-” You fall back on the bed, staring at the ceiling, trying to figure out how to make them both understand.
Everything inside of you is currently humming with the rightness of this situation.
“It’s the kind of cheesy, sickening love that makes people do stupid things. The sort of love that you hear about in fairy tales, where the prince gives up everything for the princess, or the whole world is righted just by two people finding each other. It’s that feeling you get when your stomach leaps before the edge of a rollercoaster, or the way you feel eating your favorite childhood food that your mom made special only for you. That’s the kind of love I’m talking about.”
You take in a breath, pondering in the lingering silence for just a moment, and when you look at Jeongin, his nose is scrunched in open disgust, his lips pulled into a dramatic grimace.
“God, noona, who knew you got so sappy when you drink?”
“She’s always sappy, even when she hasn’t been drinking.”
Minho appears then, dropping a blanket onto the bed on top of all of you, and there is immediate panic in Jeongin’s eyes as he scrambles to sit up straighter and blurts out, “We weren’t talking about you!”
Minho tilts his head with a predatory look, watching the youngest sweat for a moment, before he replies easily, “Oh, I know.” He motions to the blanket he’s just delivered. “Hyunjin said you were having a sleepover, so I thought I’d bring back the blanket I washed earlier. It’s Lixie’s favorite.” He gives the omega a knowing wink.
You bite back a smile as you watch Jeongin relax just a little.
“Thanks, hyung.” Felix gives the older man a grateful smile and grabs the blanket, raising it to his nose to inhale the scent of laundry detergent.
Minho nods and leaves for the door without another word, pausing in the frame for a moment to say, “Oh, I have seen it by the way.”
The confusion must be apparent on your faces, because his lips curve into the hint of a smirk as he leaves the room as quickly as he came, but not before tossing out casually over his shoulder, “The school girl outfit.”
He disappears, like he hasn’t just dropped a bomb, and Felix shoots you a disbelieving look, eyes wide.
“Fucking-”
“-hell.” You finish for him, nodding slightly, jaw slack.
Jeongin looks lost, glancing between the two of you.
“What? What was Minho-hyung-?”
You move at the same time Felix does, pouncing on the youngest omega as you slap your hands over his mouth, pinning him down and tickling him into submission beneath the two of you.
“Don’t. say. his. name.”
Analyzing User Behavior for SEO Strategy Refinement
Hi! Let's talk about how observing what visitors are doing on your website can seriously help you customize and up your SEO game. It's all about understanding user behavior. When you know how people are interacting with your site, you can make changes, growth points that will not only boost you in search rankings, but also make your site a more enjoyable place to visit. So how do you turn visitor clicks into valuable information? Let's dive into this topic.
What is User Behavior Analysis?
Think of user behavior analysis like being a detective. You're looking for clues about what people like and don't like on your site. This includes how long they stay on a page, what they click on, how quickly they bounce off, and what path they take through your site. These clues can tell you a lot about what's working and what's not.
Why It Matters for SEO
Search engines, especially Google, are pretty smart. They notice when users like your site, and they take that as a big thumbs up, often boosting your rankings as a result. So, understanding and improving user behavior isn't just about making your site better for visitors; it's about making it more attractive to search engines too.
Key User Behavior Metrics to Track
Bounce Rate: This is when someone lands on your site and leaves without clicking anything else. A high bounce rate might mean your page isn't what they expected or it didn't load quickly enough.
Time on Page: How long someone hangs around can indicate how interesting or useful they find your content.
Click-Through Rate (CTR): This tells you what percentage of people click on your site after seeing it in the search results. A low CTR could mean your titles or descriptions aren't catchy enough.
Path Through Site: Understanding the common paths people take through your site can show you what's hot and what's not.
How to Analyze and Act on User Behavior
Tools of the Trade: Tools like Google Analytics are your best friend here. They can show you all the metrics mentioned above and a whole lot more.
Identify Patterns: Look for trends. Maybe certain pages have super high bounce rates, or maybe there's one page that everyone seems to love.
Test Changes: Got a page that's not doing so hot? Try changing up the content, the layout, or how quickly it loads. Then, watch to see if the user behavior improves.
Keep Content Fresh and Relevant: Make sure your pages are up-to-date and packed with useful information. If people find what they're looking for, they're more likely to stick around.
Improve Navigation: Make it easy for folks to find their way around your site. A good user experience keeps people clicking and exploring.
Closing Thoughts
Analyzing user behavior is like having a conversation with your visitors. They're telling you what they like and what they don't, even if they're not using words. Listen to what they're saying through their behavior, make changes, and watch as your site becomes not just a better resource for your visitors, but a better performer in search rankings too. Dive into that data and start refining your SEO strategy today!
12 Local Search Developments You Need to Know About from Q2 2023
Greetings, local business owners and marketers! I know I’m not alone in bidding a fond farewell to Local U’s fantastic Last Week in Local Series. It just got a bit harder to keep up with local SEO news due to this departure, but hang in there. This quarterly installment here at Moz will keep you up-to-date with the most important local search developments of the past three months. Let’s dive right into this summery swimming pool of changes and opportunities!
1. A first peek at local search in Google’s SGE
I was graciously invited to access Google Search Labs, and you can read my live-tweeted thread on my first look at Google’s test of their new Search Generative Experience. My first takeaways include:
A thumbs up on local searches, including a 5-pack of results but a thumbs down that the SGE pack does not click to anything else. No Local Finder for more results, meaning if your first five options are unhelpful, not to your liking, or even spam, you have to ask another question to see more options.
Some UX problems, like the map disappearing as soon as you click on any of the SGE pack results, meaning you can’t look at it again to see what the next-closest option might be, as well as formatting errors of the Google Business Profile overlapping the results as you toggle about within the experience, like this:
The interesting realization that once you are having a conversation, SGE remembers what you are talking about. In other words, if you search for “best tacos in san francisco” and then you follow up with something like “who has organic tacos?”, the bot still “knows” you are talking about San Francisco, even though you didn’t repeat the city name in your query. This is a quality of these chatty experiences that feels really novel to me.
An overall impression of this being even more of a closed loop/walled garden than the interfaces to which we’ve long been accustomed in local. Once inside this feature, you just stay inside it, which may be good for Google, but may not actually be best for users. Time will tell.
And as time is telling and you are waiting in line to get into SGE for your own look, I recommend reading:
Google SGE: Meet the New Pack by Greg Sterling
How Google’s New AI Impacts Local Search by Joy Hawkins
Cool heads in the industry are refusing to give into the whole “SEO is dead thing” about AI, and I think local SEOs will be able to work with the SGE packs, should they roll out. My word to the wise local business owners out there: remember that not being robots may be your greatest asset. Even if automation brings customers to you via search/AI chat/SGE, polls consistently show that consumers shop locally for personalized service, and you can’t bot that.
2) Finalmente! A dedicated Google form for recovering missing reviews
Have you noticed an uptick in your Google Business Profile reviews disappearing since 2022? You’re not alone; experienced local SEOs like Mike Blumenthal have been reporting a high instance of legitimate review loss ever since Google switched to an AI-based review filter last year. The good news is, you can now follow along with Mike’s excellent tutorial for reporting missing reviews via a welcome new process.
Your workflow will start here and then continue through a series of steps that will hopefully result in your reviews being restored (no guarantees, of course!) As Mike points out, this development is an improvement, but the overall process is still rather onerous for business owners. I think AI-induced headaches should come with a bottle of AI-spirin for all users, especially when they involve reviews, due to the massive impact of this content on reputation, rankings and revenue.
3) Speaking of reviews, don’t acquire them via donations
It’s always helpful when Google clarifies a grey area of their guidelines, and thanks to Joy Hawkins’ personal outreach, we now know that your local business should not ask for a review after giving a donation to a third party. In other words, if your grocery store donates $100 to the local no-kill animal shelter, Google says you must not ask them to “pay you back” with a review.
A much better idea is to view these philanthropic endeavors as a source of linked unstructured citations, of the kind picture above. It’s good business to be listed as a sponsor of local teams, events, and organizations, and it fits in very nicely with the “Authoritativeness” factor of Google’s E-E-A-T concept, with trusted local sites linking to and citing your company.
4) Video: the long and short of it
Kudos to Andy Simpson for demoing this budget hack for using animation effects to turn local business photos into short videos. Videos are very hot in local right now, but the “short” part has been a cause of some recent puzzlement and parlaying.
Google’s guidelines for adding video to your GBPs state that your films should be 30 seconds long. However, experimentation by Darren Shaw indicates that it may actually be file size, not video length, which affects inclusion of your videos on your listings:
Note that, technically, videos over 30 seconds in length don’t meet the guidelines, but the worst thing that can happen to your business if you try for a longer length is that it won’t be approved. Could be worth a try, but safest best would be to film a 30-second version of your content, as well, just to be sure it has sticking power. Google definitely has its eye on video right now, and has launched YouTube shorts, which many see as a response to the TikTok phenomenon. Local businesses in competitive markets can easily film and upload to their GBPs dozens of aspects of their business premises, staff, inventory, community involvement and more!
5) Yes, that text could be from Google
Thanks to Molly Youngblood, we have the above screenshot of Google texting a business owner to verify some of their information, and Barry Schwartz lent a hand by confirming that text-based fact-checking communications are now, indeed, coming from Google. But please be careful with this. As Barry warns:
“ Google will never ask you to sign up for a service, make a payment, or provide sensitive personal information via calls or texts. Google will only text from phone numbers listed on this help page. Also if you want, you can opt-out by responding STOP to those messages (more on that here).”
6) Speaking of communications, how about chatting with a live agent?
Joy Hawkins tweeted this capture of a Google Business Profile featuring a CTA to chat with a live agent and Joel Headley stepped up to explain that this catchy feature stems from Google BusinessMessages. Then, Aaron Weiche mentioned that if you’re using a third-party service like Leadferno to manage messaging, get in touch with them to coordinate making this appear on your listing. Any way you can be more accessible to your customers is worth investigating!
7) A mobile grid test packed with local results
This screenshot from a gentleman named Brandon (click to watch video capture) formed the basis of a blog post from Barry Schwartz in which he marveled at just how much local information is packed into this mobile grid display test. As we know, Google is always testing things and it’s honestly hard to know if you’ve seen a particular experiment before or if it’s truly new. This instance is certainly dense with local business results, to the point that I wonder how effectively users can navigate it. And, of course, I am really wondering where all this is headed if SGE rolls out to everyone’s phones.
8) Google Maps services button gets the spotlight
Allie Margeson has sharp eyes to have caught this slight but significant change in the ordering of CTA buttons on some maps listings, with the “services” button appearing to the left of the “call” button. When clicked on, that button can take your customers to a wealth of information about your business, if you’ve taken the time to provide it. Allie recommends:
Adding all your services with descriptions to your Google Business Profile
Adding any relevant predefined services Google suggests (remember, Joy Hawkins found these can impact rankings)
Adding all relevant categories to your listing so that you are offered as many predefined services as possible
Check back often to see if new services become available to you, or if any of your current ones have become outdated
Good advice!
9) A quick competitive analysis tip
There are many ways to suss out the businesses Google regards as your local competitors, including via the lengthy and thorough process of a formal audit, but for some very quick ideas, I think Mordy Oberstein’s tip is excellent.
If your Google Business Profile includes an “Often Searched Together” section, it’s inside information about what Google knows customers in your area are actually doing with search. If you click on this element, you will be taken to the local finder, with a “People also search for” heading (and you can see some debate in the Twitter thread over whether this is a re-branded People Also Asked segment):
Chances are, you should take a look at the businesses that come up in the format and study their marketing, SEO, and basic business operations, because you know your own customers are seeing them, too.
10) A bothersome Google Updates bug
In the real world, bugs are wonderful and support life on Earth in numerous ways and are never larger than your town, but in the Google world, a bug is no fun at all. Mike Blumenthal reported a bug in mid-May that caused listing owners to be unable to edit or remove their Google Updates (formerly known as Google Posts). This may have been confined to desktop devices because some respondents to his thread found a workaround in using their mobile phones to manage their updates. If you had trouble with a typo in a post that you couldn’t correct last month, try again. The bug appears to have been resolved.
And here’s hoping that Google again re-brands this useful feature with a little more thoughtfulness, because “updating” your “updates” is just a silly thing to have to say or contemplate. I don’t understand what the problem was with “posts”.
11) A confirmation that hiding your GBP address results in negative consequences
Anyone who has been reading my Moz column for any part of the past 12 years knows that I am a firm advocate of following the Guidelines for representing your business on Google when listing yourself in Google’s local product. Even when the guidelines don’t make good horse sense, I still advise sticking to them. But there is one instance of this in which Google makes it so very hard to go along with their thinking: the edict that home-based businesses should hide their addresses. Google says this of home-based service area business:
Watch this video and read this post to see how Joy Hawkins and her team at SterlingSky tested hiding the address for home-based businesses and confirmed that:
This resulted in a massive drop in local rankings
Which, of course, led to a significant drop in phone calls to the business
And it even made a local pack completely disappear until Joy’s agency added the address back in!
It’s long been speculated that compliance with Google’s ruling on this negatively impacts visibility, and this is doubtless why so many business owners list their addresses and hope not to be caught at it.
There is no good reason I can think of for Google to put home-based businesses at a disadvantage like this. I’d like to ask:
Why should the plumber, the landscaper, the mobile auto repair specialist, the contractor, the mobile notary public, the therapist, the dog walker, and all the other small business professionals who are counted upon by whole communities be punished with lower rankings for adhering to Google’s guidelines?
Why do these helpful businesses deserve less visibility and fewer phone calls if they operate from home instead of an office? This is a senseless bias on Google’s part.
Where is the awareness from Google that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has caused a mass transition to working from home for safety’s sake? Why have the guidelines not been updated to reflect this world-changing reality that is very much still affecting both business owners and customers? This lack of currentness makes the guidelines feel as neglected as a GBP with a Christmas tree as its profile pic in July. Ignoring the real-world impacts of the pandemic doesn’t make them go away.
How is it a better user experience for no local pack to show for queries if, as in Joy’s test, an address is hidden? How are towns better-resourced and better served by not being shown a list of local service providers?
And, finally, what is the logic behind making any business hide its address in the first place? All of us have needed to hire an emergency plumber, locksmith, or towing service at some point, and we definitely want to see the addresses of the providers so that a) we can estimate how quickly the pros can get to us and b) we won’t be charged extra for them having to come a long way to our house or remote location. When we need help, we don’t care if the helper is coming from their living room or their office, but we do want to know exactly where they’re located so that we can make the most informed decision.
I’d urge Google to reconsider this section of their policy. It doesn’t match today’s reality of so many helpful folks working from home, and it just doesn’t feel right that compliance with the guidelines results in such negative consequences for both providers and customers.
12) A local session with an adept
While this isn’t an update, per se, I want to invite you to spend eight minutes today watching Darren Shaw audit a Google Business Profile and website. If you’re just getting started with local search marketing, this short video will teach you a ton, and even if you’re more experienced, it’s a good thing to watch a recognized pro at work. As I mentioned to Darren:
And thank you, Darren, and all of the local SEOs featured in today’s column, for the daily work you put in, sharing your findings with the community. Q2 has had some of the usual glitches and tests, but it also bears signs of significant potential change ahead. Let’s all keep learning together!
We hope you’re as excited as we are for August 7th and 8th to hurry up and get here. And again, if you haven’t grabbed your ticket yet and need help making a case we have a handy template to convince your boss!
Top Tips to Improve Your Google Search Ranking and Get Found at Last!
Tumblr media
Struggling to improve your website’s visibility in Google search ranking? There’s nothing more demoralising that spending hours hammering away at your laptop only to get no returns. If you publish an excellent article but no one notices, then it’s perfectly natural to wonder why you even bothered.
Google Loves On-Page Optimisation, and You should too!
Don’t know what I’m talking about? Stick with me, and read a few more of my articles and you’ll soon get the hang of the jargon. ‘On-page optimization’ is all about formatting your page in a way that Google likes: in other words, finds easy to navigate. There’s no magic to it, but there is a kind of a rule book that you should know about, in order to give yourself the best fighting chance of getting your content found and ranked in the search engine results.
To Start: Register Your Site with Google Search Console
This is a free service that allows you to submit your website to Google for indexing. By doing so, Google will know that your site exists and can start including its content in search results.
You can also use Search Console to check if Google is having any problems crawling your website and identify areas that can be improved from a technical SEO standpoint. It’s also useful to monitor the number of visitors your site is receiving, which is super-helpful. After a while, you’ll be able to see whether certain kinds of posts cause a spike in traffic, and then you’ll know what kinds of posts got the best reaction from your audience and produce more of that sort of content.
Next Up: Register Your Site with Google Business
If you have a bricks and mortar business, or perhaps if you’re a local service provider, then creating a Google Business profile is a real shot in the arm for your site. This will ensure that your business is going to appear more frequently in the local search results, and if you can get it to appear in the golden ‘three pack’- the first businesses that show up in the search- then you’re really going to start to see some traction.
Careful Keyword Research will improve your Google Rankings
Think carefully about the purpose for your website: to solve a major pain point or problem for your target audience- right? So your task is to ensure that your site provides the answers and information that your folks are searching for: this is crucial. Get this wrong, and no one will visit your site!
How to…..choose the wrong keywords and therefore fail miserably (and invisibly.)
There are different ways of failing miserably at keyword research. The first way is by doing no research at all, and just assuming that people want to read about just what you think they want to read about. Hmmm….not necessarily the case.
Or….
You could find keywords that lots of people are searching for- which is good, very good, but which also lots of people are already writing about, on their much more powerful and authoritative sites than yours. Depressing. When you’re starting off, there’s absolutely no point in trying to compete with the giants who have massive audiences, as Google will send traffic to their sites while yours sinks down into the doom that is page 37 of the search results. Depressing, very depressing indeed.
The other route to failure is to create a site where you write about a subject that no one gives two hoots about. Don’t create content about your knitting patterns for socks for mice, for example. Or make-up tips for turtles. Because, frankly, no one cares. Not even turtles.
High Search Volume, but Low Competition
There- I’ve said it: this is the magic formula for the keywords you need to find to get your site found in the Google rankings. These are the words that plenty of your target audience are searching for, but are not too hard to rank for.
My Favourite Keyword Research Tool
There are different tools you can use to carry out your keyword research: some are free and some are paid. My favourite is Tube Buddy which helps you to identify great keywords using You Tube.
Rank on Google with Killer Content
Time to create great content using the those you’ve identified using Tube Buddy. This means writing about topics in considerable depth and ensuring that your content satisfies key user queries about them. As part of this process, look at what’s already ranking highly for a particular search term and craft your content so that it is bigger and better than the number one search result.
Produce Top Ranking Content in a few Minutes
If the idea of writing your own content scares you to death, then don’t worry- help is at hand in the form of friendly robots who will be very happy to write all the quality content you need at very little cost. Open up a free account at Copyai and you’ll be amazed to learn how much content you can have written for you at absolutely no cost. After all, if you think about it, robots don’t have much to spend money on, do they? Don’t eat, don’t drink…they’re not bothered about driving fancy cars. Correct me if I’m wrong!
Create a Compelling Page Title
It’s really important for your on-page SEO score to make sure that you create a compelling page title. A top tip is to place your target keyword near the start of your title and keep titles relatively short and to the point. Remember, you want to grab attention quickly and you’ve only got a moment in which to do that.
Now the process of coming up with a catching page title can easily involve tugging out your hair and beard- if you have one-pacing up and down, drinking ridiculous amounts of coffee, and smoking the cigarettes that you swore to yourself you’d given up years ago.
Better still- let Artificial Intelligence do it for you!
However- yes indeed- help is at hand! Once again, there are artificial intelligence answers to this awful conundrum- so step away from those dark evil temptations and fire up Copyai and let the robots figure out something irresistible. If you’d like a little demo of how this works, then just click here to be taken to my You Tube short,( and leave me a like and subscribe to my channel while you’re there.)
Grab Attention with an Engaging Meta description
The meta description is a brief summary of your web page which is displayed as part of the search snippet in the search engine results page. It gives the user an idea of the content of your page, and therefore how relevant it is to what they are searching for.
The recommended length for your meta description is between 50-160 characters, so you don’t need to write too much, but you do need to ensure that your target keywords are in there. Think of it as being like a mini advert: the intention is to capture and entice users into opening up your page and consuming your content.
If you’d like further advice on writing quality meta descriptions, then here’s a great article by the experts at The Hoth for you to check out: https://www.thehoth.com/learn/seo/on-page-seo/meta-description/
Your Page URL needs a simple structure
 An important tip is to make sure that the URL you create for your page has a simple structure. Aim to create short URLs that include your target keywords and are easy for humans and search engines to understand.
Google loves fast-loading sites
If we have to wait for a site to load, our instinct is to click away and resume our search. Therefore, it’s absolutely crucial that your site is Mobile-Friendly and loads quickly: Google prioritizes sites that display correctly on mobile devices in search results. So make sure that you are using a website building tool that produces responsive, mobile-friendly websites. Use a fast hosting provider and a website building platform that lets you create speedy websites.
Build Backlinks
 A backlink is a link from somebody else’s content to yours, and generally speaking, Google treats each backlink to your site as a vote for your content. So the more backlinks that you can earn for your pages, the more authoritative and trustworthy your content will appear to Google.
In Conclusion
Implementing these tips will see an improvement in the ranking of your website, and using them will cost you nothing, beside the price of your own time. Don’t expect success overnight, organic SEO is definitely a marathon, not a race, as the saying goes.
However- yet again- help is at Hand!
Now, look, before you get depressed and overwhelmed, let me suggest a short cut for you.
