On todays #paleostream MONKEY CRUISE RETURNS
With Ekembo and Pachylemur
For those who don't know, #MonkeyCruise is a series of paintings in which I turn classic positions from art history into paleoart pieces with extinct primates.
The Ekembo piece, as you probably have guesses already, is a homage to Leonardo da Vinci's "Last supper". One of his most famous works. I had my eyes on this for a while but only recently had an idea what to depict it with.
Tumblr media
Ekembo is a great ape from the Miocene that was found on Rusinga island, Kenya. There wer volcanoes in the area which they also snuck into this piece. The apes here are gathering on this log because a migrating ant colony is crossing it, a welcome snack bar.

The second piece is based on a painting by Finnish painter Eero Järnefelt, called "Under the Yoke".

Pachylemur was a large lemur from the Holocene of Madagascar, it#s extinction is most likely human caused. Two causes are shown here: habitat loss, thanks to slash and burn agriculture and bush meat hunting.

Blue, cyan, aqua, coral?
Blue: blues, shades of grey, orange s as nd sea green
Cyan: I’m agnostic so... yeah
Aqua: yeah I thrift occasionally. Mostly for records and old sheet music. But other stuff too
Coral: Steller’s sea cow, the pachylemur would be cool but also kinda terrifying. The vaquita is extremely endangered. The Northern White Rhino is also extremely endangered.
The last one was a bit long but I really like animals so yeah.

grookey prediction
it’s evo will be based on an extinct monkey because every other grass starter evo was based on an extinct animal, even decidueye was based on an extinct owl. here are some cool dudes
Tumblr media
but what species? someone on twitter said pachylemur and honestly i love that idea despite grookey not being a lemur, i need an actual lemur mon. but pokemon can change the animal/object/plant its based on
Tumblr media
and i’d love to have these and not big bulky gorilla, which extinct monkey would be cool for grookey evo?

In my previous blog post, I mentioned this elusive extinct species...Archaeoindris fontoynontii.  Only six specimens in the entire expanse of Earth have been found, well, seven now...
The top picture is a picture of a specimen at Northern Illinois University.  It is part of a femoral bone, and through my time in Madagascar, working with the six bones that have been found of Archaeoindrii, I was tasked with determining what exactly it was, and where it fit in.
In the second picture, you’ll see an adult femur of Archaeoindrii.  Simply doesn’t fit, right?  Oh, I assure you, I had my mind set to be proven that it wasn’t the gorilla sized lemur.  I mean, what were the odds?  However, then I found what was in the third picture.
Still, it didn’t look to fit that well.  Okay, time to play process of elimination.  What was found in Madagascar that we already know of?
Pachylemur?  Nope, not that one, too big.
Megaladapis?  Still no, looked at several femurs of that guy before.
Okay, we can rule out the smaller ones, this thing is rather large.  Next, what other types of mammals have been found?
Hippo?  Absolutely not.  What kind of hippo would that even be?
Elephant bird?  Interesting species that I hope to work more on in the future.  But no.
And we can certainly rule out crocodile.
Now that I’ve ruled all that out, I’m left with the huge lemur, Archaeoindrii.  Great, now what?  I’ve certainly been thinking about how a new species could have popped up in the paleontological record, but not with one bit of a femur.
Follow and keep reading to know more about my thought process...and what happened to that weird piece of bone!
Signing off,
Lucillia the Upcoming Paleontologist
