A piece from the #MonkeyCruise series, in which I take classic pieces from art history and replace humans with extinct primates and alter the scenes accordingly.
Here it's Mesopithecus witnessing a beached Otodus megalodon.

On todays #paleostream MONKEY CRUISE RETURNS
With Ekembo and Pachylemur
For those who don't know, #MonkeyCruise is a series of paintings in which I turn classic positions from art history into paleoart pieces with extinct primates.
The Ekembo piece, as you probably have guesses already, is a homage to Leonardo da Vinci's "Last supper". One of his most famous works. I had my eyes on this for a while but only recently had an idea what to depict it with.
Tumblr media
Ekembo is a great ape from the Miocene that was found on Rusinga island, Kenya. There wer volcanoes in the area which they also snuck into this piece. The apes here are gathering on this log because a migrating ant colony is crossing it, a welcome snack bar.
Tumblr media
The second piece is based on a painting by Finnish painter Eero Järnefelt, called "Under the Yoke".

Pachylemur was a large lemur from the Holocene of Madagascar, it#s extinction is most likely human caused. Two causes are shown here: habitat loss, thanks to slash and burn agriculture and bush meat hunting.

Results from the, rather short, #paleostream! Dolichocebus and Dynatoaetus, the mighty eagle. Dolichocebus is our newest #MonkeyCruise piece!
The Dolichocebus is based on a painting by Gerard van Honthorst, a dutch painter from who lived from 1592- 1656. Title is "Admiration of the child". As you can see I changed the white sloth to belly fur and added a light ray instead of the baby having an inner glow. ;)
Tumblr media
The primate, Dolichocebus, was a capuchin monkey relative from the Miocene of Argentina.

Several projects arose from the #paleostream but non was maybe so satisfying as #MonkeyCruise, a still ongoing series in which we take pieces from art history and transform them into plausible compositions featuring extinct primates. Some of these you might recognize.
if possible these might be turned into a little book one day

Our new #MonkeyCruise piece is a hommage to Artemisia Gentileschi's "Judith und Holofernes", one of the most brutal depictions of this popular theme.
Important to note here: it appears that this painting was kind of authobiographic. Artemisia painted it after being raped, and although the guy got time in prison her reputation was "damaged", so people say she painted her attacker into this piece. One of the most badass pieces of art I know.
The primate in this image is Nakalipithecus, potential relative of gorillas, or a drypithecine.

Another sketch brought to you by #paleostream!
A male Sivapithecus approaches a female, she doesn't appear to be interested.
This is part of the #MonkeyCruise series, where I draw classic examples from art history in believable compositions involving extinct primates.
