And Annet asked her if she sees them as children, and reader looked at her and said " no, why would that make you say that? " while process on straightening Annet cloak
Lilith!Reader and the Nocturne Crew
It's always disguised as needing everyone to be okay, because the crew can't defeat Bathory if they're hurt.
So you'll hunt for them to eat.
Patch them up when they're hurt.
Generally give advice.
One day Maria, understandably sour given what happened to her mother, tells you you're not her mother. Before storming off after you said her plan was reckless.
Those words hurt more than you expected.
You'd never be caught dead admitting the party felt like your own children.
Perhaps it was filling the hole left after your own were gone.
Richter wasn't trusting of it all. But you could tell he craved the comfort a mother could provide.
And how he'd subconsciously seek it from you.
It was endearing, really.
Annette was always the one to know how you truly felt.
She just accepted what you had to give.
Rarely did she refuse your care, there was some kind of unspoken understanding that came from her.
Overtime, you just knew you were in trouble. Because you wouldn't lose them, you wouldn't lose anymore children.
Bonus:
Mizrak is definitely the father figure. He and Reader act like divorced parents.
okay, i was looking over old posts about overtime ( like this one ), and i’m just so intrigued if fen is actually gonna down with this idea of having multiple routes and endings
cause i mean, think about it
damian already hates josiah for one ulterior reason or another; if you decide to go with josiah, i figured that damian is gonna react more negatively and hostile towards you as the game progresses. perhaps even having a sequence of events where he’ll attempt to kill you!
i also like the idea that it could ramp up the difficulty in some cases cause what if the other love interests ( for now, i’ll have this term refer to the main 3 ) are more aggressive with their approaches towards you or make the game harder by withholding information that allows you to move further into this mystery
annette herself showed the “++” when you chat with her, so maybe her and gavin ( and any other character ) would help out if you manage to score enough points with them as well. like if in one route has you avoiding any one of the main 3, either annette or gavin could help stall them while you get away or do something important without interruption
( also side note: i’d very much love it on y’all’s takes on this: like what the certain requirements for each interest to make you like them, what they could do to make it difficult for you, etc :D )
Story Summary: Marigold Ashford escaped the mansion, only to face new incarceration with a familiar jailor. She may yet have to make a deal with the devil, if she can unearth what this Faustian bargain would cost her.
There is always something left to lose.
Chapter summary: Infiltrating the RPD station, Marigold and Ada await the return of a target.
5:13 a.m.
As they approached the station, Ada began to outpace Marigold by half a step, moving in front. “Are you clear on your cover story?”
“I don’t mind if you keep calling me Callie, it helps keep things organized,” Marigold responded in a dry voice. “I’ll stick with what I have. Yourself?”
Ada glanced back at her. “They know me as a reporter around here. I’ll have to be careful - one of the real reporters I work with got himself arrested fairly recently when he got into Annette Birkin’s face one too many times.”
Marigold blinked at the back of Ada’s head. “They got married, then?” She shook her head. “I suppose they would have. I keep forgetting how incestuous the remote labs have to be if they’re to avoid clawing the walls down with cabin fever.”
Ada paused, then looked back, longer this time. “You know, it’s really easy to forget that you’re fifty, and then you open your mouth.”
“Don’t forget the seventeen-year blank spot where I keep wondering how to avoid a party for my upcoming thirty-third,” Marigold shot back in a pleasant tone. “I’m glad Daniel remembers me, then.”
They rounded the corner, quieting. The police station loomed up ahead. Marigold hadn’t lingered long enough last time to take a good look at it, but…“wasn’t that a museum, before?”
Ada snickered. “Good memory. Yes, and they’ve barely had time to move in. It wouldn’t be possible for them to be less organized right now.”
“It’s quiet.” Marigold said after a moment. “I didn’t think it would be.”
“Nothing’s happened, as far as any of ours can see.” Ada prodded.
Marigold shuddered, balled her hands into fists. “As far as you can see, yes. Let’s just get this done and get the hell away from here.” Below their feet, Marigold was beginning to feel that ice-pick sting of being this near the NEST, and the virus’ more violent cousin.
Falling into a comfortable silence, Ada crossed the street, taking a well-worn garden park path through the trees to cover their approach.
Marigold followed.
----------
The station was nearly deserted.
“End of a shift, and everyone’s working overtime,” Ada murmured, drawing Marigold into a hallway just inside the main entrance, on their right. One glance at the massive art pieces prominently displayed inside told Marigold more than she wanted to know about how this place was run, and she fought back a grimace. “There’s a staircase on the far end that will take you to the second floor. Do you want to wait in his office?”
Marigold shook her head, shaking her hair out to obscure her face. “That will look too much like an ambush.” It absolutely would be an ambush, but things would go more smoothly if Irons felt secure at the start. “I don’t know if he’ll be alone. We’ll reassess if that becomes a problem. Besides, you may have more trouble than I will. You may want to wait a moment after I go in.”
Ada frowned, not breaking stride. “We can work that out when the time comes. I don’t like the idea of loitering around in the hallways, waiting for them to return. Too exposed.”
The door to the stairs lay ahead. Ada reached out to push the door open, only to be stopped when Marigold placed a soft hand at her elbow, raising a finger to her lips. Her eyes darted to the bathroom, where she could hear a woman sniffling. Here in this dark corner of the station, she obviously didn’t want to be found.
Marigold smiled at Ada, making an after-you gesture at the bathroom door. She slipped her other hand into her bag. Ada had snidely brought an issue to light earlier that Marigold had managed to overlook in the surreal little dance of the last few weeks. If they had to wait on Irons somewhere anyways, dealing with that now was as good a pretense as any.
Well, Marigold thought to herself. If Irons fancies himself an art collector, I wonder how he’ll like a shiny new Trojan Horse?
----------
Katherine Warren was having the worst day.
A police car had arrived at her door not two hours earlier. Her father, the mayor, had left the city on urgent emergency business. This kind of thing seemed to happen more and more these days. Katherine, all of twenty years old, was used to all of this. She had a good life: she was studying business administration at the university in town, all while campaigning for president in the school’s sorority. Raccoon City’s rise to prosperity had been the envy of the country, and it had all been done while her father was at the helm.
And the company, of course. Her father never let her forget where their good fortune came from. So what if the security at school suddenly was replaced by ex-military types? Big Pharma was a tough business. Security was critical for them.
Obviously.
This summer though…things had started to get really scary. A few of her classmates had stopped coming to lectures, and no one knew where they had gone. The polite fictions of her upbringing came under strain.
Looking back, she might have breezed by it had she not started meeting that cute reporter, Ben Bertolucci, for lunch on Fridays. He’d been a little scruffy, a little rough looking, but…different. Passionate about doing some good in the world. And the situation this summer…worried him. Too much got swept under the rug. Too many people looked away when terrible things happened. Just look at that awful business with STARS.
And then Ben had disappeared. Arrested, his partner told her when she had checked in after missing their last lunch. Kicked over the wrong hornet’s nest at the wastewater treatment plant.
Now she had been escorted to the police station, for her own safety, so to speak. Uncle Brian would keep an eye on her while they got everything under control. Or so she’d been told, anyhow. Uncle Brian himself was out, talking to the goddamned FBI, apparently.
Meanwhile, she was hiding in a bathroom, trying not to cry in front of any of the other cops here.
Or she would have been, had Ben’s partner not stumbled into the same bathroom, almost as if she’d been shoved through the door.
Katherine backed up, startled. “Miss Wong?” She asked in a weak voice. God, she hated sounding like a little girl at a time like this, but no one would explain anything.
Ada’s eyes widened, and she gave the girl a tired smile. “Katherine Warren, I didn’t expect to see you again.” She stepped forward, suddenly softer and gentle. “I got a tip about Ben, so I came down here early. Are you alright?”
Katherine trembled and shook her head. “No one will tell me anything. An officer picked me up from home a little while ago. No one’s even here.” Her eyes shone with tears she refused to shed. “That hasn’t happened before.”
Another woman, probably around Katherine’s age, stepped in behind her, looking dejected. The woman had light brown hair that reached her shoulders in a messy bob, and had her arms wrapped around her middle as if that were the only thing keeping her together.
She was clutching a small pharmacy bag in one hand. The woman flicked her eyes up to meet Katherine’s, giving a strained smile. “Oh - I’m sorry,” she said in a soft voice. Miss Wong glanced back a little sharply but stepped aside to let the other woman in. “My brother called me and told me to meet him here a little while ago. I didn’t want to get kicked out before he showed up.” She smiled at Miss Wong in apology. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you. You looked like you knew where you were going.”
Katherine’s eyes sharpened. “He works for Umbrella?”
The woman blinked at her. “I - yes! I just moved here for a job, so I’m staying with him. He wouldn’t tell me anything either though.” The woman bit her lip. “I’m Callie.”
Katherine’s eyes fastened on a small box clutched in Callie’s hand. She hadn’t become president of her sorority by being inattentive. More to the point, here was a lovely, mundane thing that she knew how to deal with. “I’m Katherine. Does your boyfriend work here too?”
Callie made a face and actually blushed. Katherine, so, so desperate for a distraction, missed how Ada’s eyebrows rose, just a bit. “Noooo. He’s not my…I just needed to take this.” She nodded to the stalls. “I just wanted to do this somewhere quiet.”
Katherine smiled, practically shining with relief. Dealing with pregnancy scares in her circle of friends was one thing she absolutely knew she could handle right now. Given how weird and scary the last few hours had been, this was practically a gift. “Don’t worry. Honestly, it’s better not to be alone right now.”
Callie gave her another shy smile, and stepped past her towards the stalls. Katherine’s eyes slid over to Miss Wong. “Can they keep holding him? I thought they had to press charges.”
Miss Wong sighed, and slumped a little. “That’s normally true. I was supposed to talk to someone in a bit, once the shift change happens.” She gave Katherine a sad smile. “I’m sorry, dear, I don’t know much yet. I’m afraid that I have few friends here…”
“So you’re hiding near an exit,” Katherine finished. “There’s a big office upstairs you could wait in - they…um. Stopped using it earlier in the summer.” STARS had indeed stopped using their office since the team had been dismembered, then disbanded, in that order. Some of the stories she’d been hearing around campus were horrible.
Stop it, Katherine thought. Out loud, she called over to the other woman, now shut inside a stall. “I think I want to hear more about Callie’s boyfriend!”
“Not. My Boyfriend.” Oh, Katherine could hear the gritted teeth. She grinned at Miss Wong, who gave her a bemused smile back.
“One-night stand?”
“…no.”
“Oooh, a regular affair! Colleague? Is it someone you work with?” Ada supplied, getting in on the game. Katherine gave a small laugh, wagging a finger at Miss Wong in approval.
“I don’t want to talk about it, and you are both horrible human beings.” came the slightly sullen voice in the stall.
Katherine gave a theatrical gasp. “Is it your boss?!” Miss Wong pressed her lips together to suppress her laughter.
Callie’s voice rose just a little, in almost a hiss. “I am trying to pee!”
Katherine snorted. “I am trying to write a soap opera where you are running away with your secret mobster boss, who is secretly your brother’s mortal enemy. Of course, you moved here after coming out of a coma, with amnesia. Don’t kill my dreams, Callie.”
A long pause and the toilet flushed. After a moment, Callie exited the stall. “It’s possible…” ”Yes?!”
“That I would watch that show.”
Miss Wong looked at Katherine fondly. “Clearly Miss Warren is missing her true calling, not running off to Hollywood.”
“Ah...” Katherine shrugged. “Everyone thinks they want to do something like that. I do fine here. Maybe one day, though.”
Callie pocketed the test - wrapped up in toilet paper - and stepped out to the sink to wash her hands.
Katherine sidled up to her, raising her hands and crossing her fingers like a game show contestant. “No baby, no baby, big money?”
Callie stared at her, then gave a little laugh. “That sounds about the size of it,” she replied.
Outside, several police cars pulled into the parking lot. Chief Brian Irons had been up all night. Talking with Umbrella. Talking to the Feds, who were, in turn, starting to talk about the CDC and the military.
What an absolute shitshow. It was Umbrella’s shitshow. But of course, they’d been paying him all these years to shovel up all of the shit that leaked out of their polished pristine offices.
He wasn’t sure he had a big enough shovel anymore. Umbrella brass had assured them that they were quietly deploying a private security service.
Fuck. If their man on the inside, Alpha Team Captain Albert fucking Wesker (may he rot in hell for leaving him to handle all of this himself), hadn’t been able to make it out of the absolute clusterfuck of the mansion incident alive, what good would throwing more meat into the grinder do?
First things first. He needed to check in at base. Mayor Warren had jumped ship at the first opportunity - dispatch had confirmed that little Katherine had been brought in. He’d settle in, get a few winks, and then deal with the rest of the world.
But not before a drink. Irons figured that he’d earned that much. **
In the tiny bathroom, three women looked up as headlights lit up the bathroom window. Several police cars had just returned to the station. The gruff voice of a man who was running up against fifty and losing, barked orders. Katherine stopped laughing, going still. “He’s back.”
Ada looked at her with sympathy. “They’ve probably been up all night. I’m not sure I want to run into any of them right now. Everyone’s wound so tight that someone’s bound to snap.”
Katherine sighed. This had been fun, but the real world always seeped in around the edges. “Yes. You’re right.” She pushed away from the sink. “There’s a quiet place on the third floor where I can sleep. I’ll walk you up to a place you two can wait first, though.”
Callie frowned then touched Katherine on the arm to get her attention. “Hey.”
Katherine turned, and Callie was holding a negative test up for the both of them to see. “Big money.”
The three of them laughed, a sound born out of desperation to find anything normal, anything controllable in all of this.
As Katherine led the two other women upstairs, it never occurred to her that she would never get a moment of peace like that again.
@mercyburned said: ❛There shall be dancing.❜ / Annette to Mercie
The war had been hard on everyone, the bloodshed, the suffering, the outright injustice of it all was too much for anyone to handle, even Mercedes. As a healer, she was on the front lines in a much different way, she was poised and ready to help and heal any and everyone who had gone down, who got hurt, who found themselves otherwise incapacitated on the battlefield. She saw the worst of it, whether it be right there on the open field, or hidden behind the flaps of the tent walls surrounding her and her fellow healers.
Even when the fight was won, there was still much to do on her end, many soldiers to mend and heal, to nurse back to health so they got to see their families and loved ones again. She loved helping, loved to heal, but even this wore on her heart overtime. Especially when she did everything she could, poured as much of her energy into healing someone as absolutely possible and still fell short, their life draining from their body right before her eyes.
It must have shown on her face as she walked the halls of the monastery, the glossed over, far off gaze of the self proclaimed, air headed healer, of a woman who worked so hard to help as many as she could and still failed. She knew there was to be a celebration of their win, her presence was expected - perhaps if she popped in for just a second, they wouldn’t miss her too much and she could slip off and just sleep.
Yes, just for a second, then.
Mercedes made her way to the courtyard where the music was playing, soldiers singing along in a joyous cacophony, people dancing around and having fun. It was a celebration -- but at what cost had they won this? Mercedes withheld the sigh and pushed a little further in, just enough to grab one of the cakes on the table and take a small bite out of it.
Despite resigning herself to only be there for a moment, Mercedes found herself transfixed on the movement of the dancers while the war raged on in her mind, the screams of agony, of the pain and suffering, the bloodshed. She hadn’t even noticed when the red head approached, even less when Annette attempted to gather her attention.
Only when the other took the hands of the healer, now empty of their cake, did Mercedes blink and come back to herself.
There shall be dancing.
Annette’s smile was grand, as heartwarming and calming as it always was for Mercedes during times like this. It put the raging storm of Mercedes’ aching heart at ease, if only for a moment. Long enough for Mercedes to squeeze her hands back, a small smile pulling at her features as she nodded, leaning forward to place a soft kiss to Annette’s forehead.
“Yes,” The healer agreed, pulling the other forward so they could join the other’s on the dance floor, “Let’s show them what we can do, shall we?”
Summary: The Festival of Lights is happening in King County and Daryl makes a surprise stop at your booth.
A/N: They’re too cute.

“I saw Tiny at the gazebo today with Axel; hanging lights.” You mentioned, sitting in the carport while Daryl worked on the Jeep. He’d spent the other day, after dropping you off at the diner, putting up temporary plastic walls to seal out the cold in the carport. You couldn’t help being grateful as you sat in front of the space heater.
“Deanna asked Dale if we’d put in some overtime decoratin’ for that damn festival they’re putting on.” Daryl replied. He wasn’t thrilled to be stuck doing menial crap around the town center like stringing lights and hanging stupid snowflake decorations for something that was, in his mind, unnecessary.
“Are you going?” You asked. You’d spent two hours on the phone yesterday after church discussing outfit options with Maggie, whose initial grounding was being slowly lifted. Phone calls had been reinstated, at least to you.
“Are ya joking?” Daryl looked like he was sure you were joking.
“No. I’m going. It’s a lot of fun.”
“It ain’t that fun. Think yer just remembering it better than it is.”
“I am not. There’s hot chocolate and they get that band to play-”
“A bunch a old men in stupid get-ups ain’t a band.” He replied.
“So sour.” You teased, laughing at him when he glared at you. “Well, if you do go, I’ll be there.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” You bit your lip to stop from smiling as he went back to working on the car.
He hadn’t flat out rejected the idea of going there and seeing you. He had been in to the diner a few times with Axel or T-Dog but outside of the carport you usually couldn’t get him to acknowledge your existence. You knew that your mom would have a heart attack if she found out that you were entertaining any thoughts of him at all so talking to each other and seeing each other had to be done carefully, but you couldn’t help the feeling in your stomach at the thought of him showing up at the Lights Festival to see you.
“I’m thinking yer car’ll be fixed by the new year.” Daryl mentioned.
Oh. “Oh.” You stopped taking notes, looking up at him again, “okay.”
“Course ya still owe me the third payment.”
“I told you, Friday!” When you caught sight of his smile you laughed, “Friday.”
“Ya said that last Friday.”
“I did not! So mean to me.”
“I’m mean ta ya? I been chaperoning ya around town at least once a week. Working on yer car...entertaining ya. Lost countless clothes ta ya.” He replied, listing off things that he’d done for you.
“Oh my god, one jacket which you said I could keep. You said the sweatpants and shirt didn’t fit anymore.” You pointed out.
“Didn’t mean ya could keep it forever.”
“I will bring it back to you.”
He looked over, grinning, “nah.”
You smiled, “come to the festival on Saturday and I’ll give you the third payment.”
“Thought ya said Friday?”
“Yeah but if you come on Saturday you can see me at the festival, I’m helping with the church booth. Annette asked me.”
“Tempting.”
-
Friday was a half-day, most of the kids having been roped into helping to finish setting up for the Lights Festival. You and Tara had used the opportunity to walk to 7-11 before your shift at the diner. Both of you were sitting on the handicap ramp, eating convenience store hot dogs and a shared bag of family size Doritos.
“How late do you work tonight?” Tara asked. She had been trying to coordinate everyone getting together for a few weeks now but with most of you working it was hard to find the time. “Glenn said he’s got off and so does Rosita. I think Eugene only works until like nine.”
“I get off at ten.” You replied, “I can-” you cut yourself off when you noticed the truck that was pulling up to a gas pump. You scooted over so that you were partially blocked by Tara and watched Daryl get out of the truck.
“What are you doing?”
“Nothing.”
Tara looked over and saw the truck, smiling, “oh my god. Maggie wasn’t lying, you are obsessed.” She laughed.
“I’m not. We’re just like...I don’t know. He’s cool and I like hanging out with him.”
“And you think he’s hot.”
“What, is that a crime?”
Tara just shook her head as she continued to eat, “so go say hi.”
“What? No way. I don’t wanna bother him.”
“Hey! Dixon!” Tara shouted, waving her hand for him to come over.
Daryl frowned, not recognizing the girl that was waving at him. As he got closer, he saw you sitting there across from her. You gave him a wave and smiled, “sorry.”
“Ya ain’t cause yer smiling.”
“So how’s it going?” Tara asked, grinning as she looked between the two of you.
“Fine.”
Tara balled up her hotdog foil and grabbed her empty soda, “I’m gonna throw this away, I’ll be right back.” She stood up and walked over to the trash can at the other end of the store, taking her time to leave the two of you alone for a little while.
“Have you changed your mind about the festival?” You asked, standing up and leaning against the railing. Daryl stood on the other side, hands gripping the railing on either side of yours.
“I told ya no.” He replied, grinning and biting at his thumb.
“Okay-”
“I’ll be around Saturday afternoon though, work on the Jeep if ya wanna stop by.”
“I’ll try, I’ve gotta be at the sign up table early.” You said, smiling.
-
Despite swearing that he would not be at the festival on Saturday night Daryl found himself there anyway. You were exactly where you said you’d be, sitting at the booth for the church with Maggie Greene, bundled in his jacket with a hat and a scarf to keep you warm. People milled around the area, stopping at tables and getting food. He wasn’t entirely sure what he was doing here; admitting that he was here to see you was a little more than he was capable of handling at the moment.
He was here now though.
“Here, keep ya warm.”
You jumped at the sound of someone beside you, turning to see Daryl standing there with a paper coffee cup. You smiled, tucking your chin into your scarf. “Thank you,” you took the cup, taking a sip of the hot chocolate that he’d bought three tables over.
“That looks good,” Maggie announced, “think I’m gonna grab myself a cup.” She got up, moving around the table. When she was passed Daryl she looked back at you, winking.
“I thought you said you didn’t do stupid town festivals?” You asked.
“Changed my mind.” He shrugged, looking around at the people walking around. “Actually got something done on yer car today, since ya weren’t there talking my ear off.”
“I do not talk your ear off.” You laughed, “I bet you missed me.”
He shook his head but you saw him smiling. “How’s Maggie doing? With her boyfriend-”
“Glenn?” You asked.
“Yeah,” he nodded. He didn’t necessarily care about Maggie or her boyfriend but he’d heard you mention it enough times to know that you cared.
“He’s here somewhere, they’re supposed to be meeting up. She didn’t tell me anything so I can have plausible deniability if anyone asks.” You replied.
“Plenty a times I could’ve used that.” He commented.
You laughed and took a sip of your hot chocolate, appreciative of the feeling of warmth that spread through you. It was cold out, even for Georgia, too cold for a town gathering but the winter fest was a big deal in King County. This was the first year Daryl could remember going.
“Jacket looks familiar.” He chewed at his lower lip as he watched you, admiring the way you looked with his jacket on.
“I know I said I’d return it but it’s warm.” You replied, pulling it tighter around you. “Still smells a little like cigarettes though,” you scrunched your nose up and he rolled his eyes.
“Can’t imagine why.” He said, fishing a cigarette out of the pack that was in his pocket and lighting it. “I ain’t gonna get struck down for smoking at the church table am I?”
“No.” You replied, “if you make a donation to the church?” You grabbed the empty coffee tin that was sitting there for donations and shook it. Daryl scoffed but he pulled two dollars out of his pocket and dropped them in. “Thank you, now we can go save a bunch of perfectly happy people in Mexico from eternal damnation and ruin their lives.” You grinned and Daryl shook his head at you again.
“Yer something else.”
“Something good?”
“I shouldn’t hang around too long.” He replied, looking back around as if people might realize that he’s there, ‘corrupting’ a sweet church girl like yourself.
“Wish you would.” You replied, feeling bold as his cheeks tinted redder than before. You smiled, watching him run a hand through his hair.
“I’ll see ya tomorrow.” Daryl said, smoke seeping out as he spoke. Your eyes widened just slightly as you watched the smoke dance in the air.
“Okay.”
He nodded as if in confirmation, taking a step away from the table before turning around and heading back through the crowd. You leaned back in your chair, pulling his jacket closer and smiling as you watched his retreating back.
These 4 books are wonderfully written and highly enjoyable. I adore this book series.
Summary:
Robin has lived her life studying, but not practicing, magic. Her parents didn’t practice so she saw no need to do so. After their deaths, she goes to stay with her Uncle Jack, who is up to some rather dangerous things, namely illegal summoning and demon contracts.
That was how Robin met Zylas, a demon her uncle had summoned and was trying to get into a contract, trapped in a summoning circle in her uncle’s basement. After her uncle’s step-son catches Robin seemingly talking to the demon, he hatches a plan to offer Robin as a sacrifice if the demon will submit to him instead. Things don’t go according to plan as Robin and Zylas bind themselves together in an illegal contract to save themselves.
This leads them on a journey to find out the ancient secrets of summoning in order to send Zylas home. With vampires, demon mages and a cult thrown in the mix, Robin and Zylas face it all together side-by-side as their bond grows stronger.
Review: (Warning: some spoilers ahead)
This series is part of the larger overall Guild Codex series, of which I have not read. Therefore this is my thoughts on this series only.
I loved it! This is the 2nd time I’ve read this and I love it as much the 2nd time as I did the first.
The developing relationship between Robin and Zylas is beautiful to watch. The character development is on point and makes sense. It isn’t suddenly forced or change quickly, but is a subtle change overtime that even the characters find themselves surprised by.
The slow burn romance between Robin and Zylas is developed well and makes sense. It drew me in and made me want to read more and more. I loved watching as they grew as individuals and their trust grow between them.
There are a lot of side characters in this series as it is connected to the Guild Codex series as a whole. I didn’t have any interest in the other characters when I read through it the first time, not even how their stories developed or changed.
However, through a second read through I found that the other characters did make me interested in what was going on in their stories and what their ultimate fate was (as it is not clear by the end of this series where everyone ended up) and I may have to look into those series as well to get the complete story.
Even without that, this 4 book series stands pretty well on it’s own. I love the art on the cover and that Zylas is not made to be a sweet, misunderstood demon. He kills people and is really strong. It’s only as he changes with Robin that he starts to tamper back a bit and evolve. The Zylas we meet in book 1 is a completely different Zylas we meet in book 4 and I love it. I love how as time passes and his thoughts on Robin change that he calls her by a different demon meaning. It helps to show the development of his feelings for her and I love it.
Same with Robin. She started off terrified of confrontation and of magic, but as she grew into the role thrust upon her, her confidence rose and she was able to become stronger. I also love how she falls for Zylas in such a way that she isn’t sure what she feels. It is just so sweet!
The plot throughout all 4 books grows with the characters, always seeming to be more than they can handle but something they have to face. There is always a moment of panic when there is a big battle and someone is hurt because you aren’t sure if they will make it. The writing is so well done that you actually feel worried.
Overall, I loved this story and the character development. That is my biggest compliment I can give this series. I cannot talk about it enough.
5/5 stars for all books and the series as a whole!
can you do hapi and sylvie for the ask game? the one with them as s/o’s
Here’s the first half with Sylvain! I’m gonna do Hapi after I nap lol
—
“Send me a character and I’ll tell you how I think they’d be as a boyfriend/girlfriend, how/when I think they’d propose, what the wedding might be like, and how they’d be as a husband/wife”
Sylvain Gautier
As a Boyfriend
Silly, silly boy. It’s hard at first, because truthfully? You’re just another fling. Key words “at first”!
As the relationship between you two blossoms, Sylvain realizes that you’re different. You began dating him despite his reputation because you actually really liked him as a person! Yeah, he’s a but stunned by this ngl, so forgive him if it takes him a bit to warm up to actually being a good faithful boyfriend lol
He’s very showy at first, lots of pda, but overtime if tones down but becomes more genuine. He’s very needy to spend time with you or cuddle, likely to even whine when you won’t kiss him (only in private tho; he’ll claim you’re the one who whines but all the lions know thats a lie). He’s not averse to gifts! At first probably typical gifts he could give to any girl and they’d like it but they progressively get more personal because he actually takes note of your interests

Typically nobles have public or extravagant proposals (coughferdieandlorenzcough) but I actually see Sylvain not doing that.
At first glance people might think Sylvain is the public proposal with confetti and whatnot type of guy, but I feel like he’d only feel a public proposal was necessary if he was marrying for political reasons. But he’s not. He’s marrying for love, mutual and genuine love.
All he really needs is to tell you how much he loves you—a bit of a speech but not really—and then he asks you to be his wife. He finds it more vulnerable to spill his heart to you in private and therefore you’d be more likely to take him seriously.
After he actually proposes he might do a fake extravagant one as a joke tho tbh lol
Wedding
This is where it might get extravagant... perhaps its big and grand on purpose because his father is mad he’s not marrying who he wanted him to, or maybe its just big and grand because he wants the best for you. He’ll never tell.
All the lions are there (ofc), as well as all your other old classmates. Dorothea and others give speeches along the lines of “omg she really turned Sylvain into a respectable man, huh?”.
Best man Felix and bride’s maids Ingrid, Mercie, and Annette 🥺
Marriage
Just like his s support with byleth, it’s clear that his philandering ways are behind him and that he’s now a devoted husband!
Hes often stuck in Gautier territory due to his responsibilities but he’s more than happy to take vacations with you when he can!! He doesn’t want you to be cooped up like him all the time so he encourages you to even go on trips when he can’t be there.
If you thought he was cuddly before? Oh boy! I mean Faergus territory is quite cold to begin with so...
Sylvain 100% brags about you to his friends/colleagues. Ingrid thinks its cute at first seeing how he was when he was younger but now it’s just... “Sylvain please you’ve shown me that photo like 8 times today...”
Yeah it came to me in a dream shared it with a friend and she said I should inflict it on the world so here we go
Warning: It's super long but I broke it up into chunks
(note not all members of the house fall into the categories listed also I'm not the best with corporate terms and positions. Also this was made for fun and isn't that serious)
The houses
The Black eagles generally were in accounting or sales. They dealt with a lot of the customers firsthand and were considered expendable
Blue lions where mostly in HR or IT
Golden deer mostly worked in maintenance and public relations.
Staff and church members are members of the board. Flayn has her position on the board despite her age because nepotism
The Seiros Co:
It's a large company that provide a large array of services and products that promote physical and emotional well-being. The company started out with good intentions but soon became a corporate monster
The company provides a host of benefits to its employees including on site housing, on site restraunts, on site pools gyms ect. They even have the best insurance on the planet. They even have horse therapy.
However they have to pay premiums on the health insurance, their rent is docted from their pay, they have to pay for on-site facilities, and those living on site are heavily encouraged to work overtime.
a lot of this is justified by cover every single health expense and days of for minor colds. Many employees seek mental health care more often than they seek physical care.
The on site living conditions vary heavily. Most are just a small white room with a single bed and a dresser. No visitors after certain hours and forget about outside visitors. However rumors are spreading that the board members have spacious luxury apartments.
The pay without all the benefits is not a wage you could live off of. But with the rent for these rooms doct from your pay you couldn't reasonably save up for different arrangements.
The strike begins:
Edelguard was finally fed up watching her team struggling. She hears constantly about how her workers are not making enough. How they have to scrape because they needed new clothes or shoes. Or worse how Petra wasn't able to support her sick grandfather
She hired a lawyer Hubert to look into information about their contracts and compare everything to labor laws. She needed to know how much of this was legal and if there was anything to be done about it.
Huberts lawfirm dealt with several lawsuits in the past. They are considered ruthless in court however media painted them out to be money hungry and demented
As expected, it was legal (mostly due to lack of regulation for these types of benefits) but really unfair, So Hubert suggested a strike. His firm would handle all the legal matters as they prepared a lawsuit and to unionize.
Edelguard was careful to organize it in private. Nothing was emailed. Nothing to tract them. Flyers were handwritten and posted in the dorms inviting members to secret meeting on slow hours.
Roles
What everyone did on the day of the strike/position they were in the office.
Black eagles
Edalguard: head of sales- she got everyone in her department and many others in different departments to simply stop working for the day when she commanded everyone to stop working via megaphone. She suck in hubert and went to a private meeting room to set up a list of demands.
Hubert: head of Vestra lawfirm- he snuck past security with the help of Edelguard. He brought a laptop and a phone with Hotspot so he could video call the rest of his attorneys from inside the conference room. Once the strike was in full swing he toured the place with Edelguard gathering evidence.
Ferdinand: senior sale manager has the highest customer satisfaction - when the strike was well underway he sent a mass email to everyone in every department including the CEO and founder herself in a very professional tone about how there is a strike. Lornez replied immediately and they when to the breakroom to enjoy tea while on the clock.
Lindhart: IT software specialist - first thing he did was turn off all the bans on websites. Everyone could go on whatever website they wanted to. He left the download blocker up and other safety precautions in place. Others could looks at memes and scroll through social media ect. He then returns to his dorm and takes a paid nap.
Caspar: manager in accounting slow but very accurate and a real team player - he hated the no pets policy with a burning passion so he let all the stray and feral cats that hang around the building in through one of the side doors. They stayed mostly on the ground floor and a few made a mess under the desks. He played with the strays with a few of his co-workers.
Bernadette: customer service rep. - she hated the calls filled with angry people. She clocked out, disconnected he phone, ran into her dorm and screamed into her pillow until calm. Once she calmed down enough she did some embroidery.
Dorothea: sales representative- has the highest upsale rate - she gets into her car and just leaves. She is still clocked in. Nobody knows where she went. Some say she met with a lover, others say she went on a binge. Nobody really knows.
Petra: bilingual sales rep. - she signed her phone off and immediately called up her family overseas. She proceeded to catch up and talk with her family for hours. She rarely got to speak with them due to the difference in timezones.
Blue lions
Dimitri: head of IT - he doesn't actually know much about IT and has little intrest in it. He got the job because his dad recommended him. With the outside website ban lifted and the lost of control of his department he frantically tried to get everything under control
Dedue: cyber security and protocol educator - although the bans are lifted he is still concerned about a cyber attack. He is frantically try to restore the ban but it seems like lindhart deleted the code.
Felix: hardware specialists - he was the one who should've been promoted into Dimitri's position and is a bit smug about how everything is falling apart in front of his boss. He bypasses the download blocker and plays minecraft on the company computer. Dimitri is too busy to notice that felix isn't helping.
Sylvain: HR rep. - he knew from the start that working conditions were shit. He was tired of trying to raise moral by doing everything but paying the employees more, giving them time off, and reasonable working hours. He went to the break room where Ferdinand and Lornez were having tea and ate a bunch of the snacks the company was reselling at super high prices then faxed a picture of his ass and balls to rhea herself as a letter of resignation.
Ashe: new hire in IT - was called down to the first floor to replace a keyboard a cat peed on. Found caspar was the reason the cats were let in. Caspar then persuaded him to play with the cats instead of shooing them out. 3 hours later he completely forgot about the strike and clocked out per usual. He completely forgot about the strike
Mercedes: head of HR - she meets with the board and discussed what to do about the strikers. They can't force them to go home since everyone striking lives on site and has every right to be there. No significant damages is being done to property. The only loss is from those not working (and a keyboard covered in cat piss and $35 worth of snacks) Mercedes is forced to find a way to get them to stop but in a way that doesn't really change anything. She leaves the meeting when it is over clocks out and returns to her modest house she calls out sick for the next couple of months.
Annette: HR rep - she tries to stop the chaos on the floor and to convince everyone to return to work. She is ignored. She wanted to ask for a megaphone to help gain attention but edelguard took the one from HR and the person with the key to one in the event closet is striking as well. She runs around in a paint trying to answer emails and settle everyone down.
Ingrid: IT helpline rep - helping Dimitri reset the ban on outside websites is above her pay grade. She at least know some of the terminology and the basics. She manages to set up a very basic blocker but it didn't block whole domains just the homepage of every website she could think of that's wasn't appropriate for work. Logging into the site allowed you to bypass the block. Ingrid feels like she will be fired for not being able to do more
Golden deer:
Claude: event planner - noticing that there was no work happening he finally decided it was time to actually do his job. He dipped into those sweet event funds and ordered as many pizza's as he could from every pizza join that could deliver. He busted out the sport balls and got employees to clear some room for flag football on the 3rd floor. He got Hilda to organize games of hide and go seek in floors 4 and 5. All games and activities were not officially approved but followed all guidelines.
Hilda: claudes assistant - organized games on the 4th and 5th floors. The cubicle although uniform made excellent hiding spaces and the food plaza just got rid of the old tables and chairs awaiting delivery of new ones so there was a ton of space to run around. Hidia had to jump between floors pretty often which was a workout all on its own but it was worth it to see everyone smile at work for once.
Lornez: head of advertising - he was tired of writing jingles and stupid commercials for the company. He wasn't aware of the strike until he got the email from Ferdinand. He offered to treat him to some tea he brought from home. They had a lovely talk and watched Sylvain stress eat. He tried to talk Sylvain out of resigning but failed.
Raphael: pizza delivery guy - he thought it was a joke at first since they never delivered pizza to the Serios Co but was persuaded by Claude. He got stopped at the front by the front desk clerk who was ordered not to allow any deliveries. Soon more pizza guys showed up and some of them where not as nice as Raphael. He eventually got in and successfully delivered his pizza.
Ignatz: accountant - he wanted no part of this and tried to work despite being on the 3rd floor. He doesn't have any PTO and is frantically trying to get his absence approved because he cannot work under these conditions. He got walled in with desks and chairs and hand to crawl his way out to try to find someone in HR to help him but found their office empty. Worst day of work ever.
Lysithia: Intern- hopes to join the advertising department - She needs this job for school credits so finding out that her boss told her to take the day off because of strike she immediately thought of her record. Lorenz assured her that she would get credit as long as he had any say in it. She played a round of hide and go seek before studying in Lornez's office
Marianne: customer service rep.- she heard the rumors and on the day of the strike she freaked out and when to have a panic attack in her car. She was on lunch technically but she took a 3 hour lunch. She came back in clocked out and decided to try that horse therapy.
Leonnie: pizza delivery guy (not nice) - she knows the customer didn't care that the order took so long to complete and was very understanding that the 30mins or less delivery time but seriously! 50 PIZZAS!! She had to stretch and press dough at top speed for like 45 mins then she burnt her hand while boxing some of the pizza's and she had to deliver all of it to this company just outside of town and now the person at the front door is insisting that the pizza was ordered by mistake oh no! Not today! You will take the pizza and you will pay for it and tip 25%.
Church
Rhea: CEO and founder - she honestly believes her practices are helping the community. She doesn't realize that she doesn't give her employees much choice. She thinks her employees are ungrateful.
Seteth: president - also believes the company is doing the best they can. He knows the dorms are small and brand but they house 78.364% of their employees and they all see a doctor at least 3 times a month. He hates that he has difficulty finding a balance between competitive prices, compensating workers, and turning a profit.
Flayn: secretary - she saw the fun going on in the 5th floor while on her lunch and thought it was organized by staff and didn't connect it as part of the strike.
Catherine: front desk - tried to turn away all the delivery drivers but more kept coming. She kept getting calls from upper management about the social media platforms and tried frantically to get in to make a statement but had little luck. She gave up when Leonnie demanded payment and let all the delivery people in.
Shamir: social media manager- she originally attended the meetings as a mole but soon learned that her fellow employees hardships. She drafted huge posts on every platform exposing the truth, changed all the passwords then took a vacation during the strike.
Hanneman: chief operational officer - he is calling and emailing the IT department about the bans every moment he can. He organized the meeting as soon as the strikers got rowdy.
Manuela: chief financial officer - although she is worried about the finances she has also been pressing about where to cut the budget first. Horse therapy is ridiculous! They own the whole ranch and are responsible for the upkeep of every horse. And all the horses are carefully hand selected and trained too. It's too much nobody uses the horse therapy because nobody has the time off to go to horse therapy!
Alois: Chairman - his title is mostly empty. He joined the strikers in a game of flag football scored a touchdown. Then went back to work as usual. Didn't check his emails about the strike since he only checks them in the morning when he first comes into work.
Gilbert: treasurer - he puts business first. Doesn't know his daughter works for the same company. Was friends with Dimitri's father. He is stressing about how the company will recover financially. He is the reason for the pay cuts so they can fund most of the benefits.
Cyrill: gopher - he gets paid minimum wage and lives on site. He considers himself lucky that he can drive the company car to go pick up office supplies from the store. He was homeless before he got a job at Seiros and feels like he is important.
Results
Since several members of the board were caught participating in strike activities the hubert and his firm counted them at strikers and used this in court.
The dorms were not considered responsible accommodations saying that prisoners in jail cells at least have their own toilet.
The news when crazy with the posts on social media. The account never replied to any dms or comments. When called they said a rogue employee posted them falsely because she was being fired.
Rhea was forced to pay a lawsuit that gave all dormitory workers an allowance of $1000 for rent for life. Even if they choose to leave the company.
Dimitri was fired for not actually having any training. Felix was promoted to the head of IT and everyone respects him.
Rhea looses her company. And most of her assets. She kept the therapy horse ranch and manages that for a living.
With the entire company now belonging to her since everyone above her resigned she made a ton of changes making the company more normal. She pays a fair livable wage to every employee. She repurposed the dorms into offices or solitary break rooms.
Huberts firm gets rebranded as a honest firm that wants to help the little guys. He later goes on to help other corporations unionize.
huh! i’m looking over on the overtime preview and annette has mentioned about something that the MC has done? apparently, they’re known as the person from the IT department like they’ve done something that made a name for themselves -- so much so that it’s on the employee file??
even the MC would have the choice of saying “Ah, my reputation proceeds me”
annette said, “...Well, I saw your employee file. And all those infractions. To be honest, I thought they were pretty funny!”
an infraction is a violation or infringement of a law or agreement so i’m guessing that the MC has?? done some pranks themselves? along with josiah or they just have a set personality of being a lil shit or a jester
“Temptation is the devil’s work. Father Joseph is doing overtime.” Woah! Is Tommy Lee Jones playing a hardcore exorcist? “God was his witness. She was his temptress”. Annette O’Toole is in this movie too? She must be playing some kind of succubus! Oh man, this is going to be awesome! Oh, wait, no it isn't. In my excitement, I forgot an important movie rule. "Any story that brings up a vow of chastity is only so it can be broken in ridiculous, hammy dramas". That's exactly what you get in Broken Vows.
Father Joseph McMahon (Jones) is shocked when he witnesses a man die in a derelict building. It’s not the death that bothers him, but the way that Stuart Chase (David Strathairn) acted as he passed away. So peaceful and serene, it doesn’t sit well with the man. His search for answers brings him to Nana Marie ‘Nim’ Fitzpatrick (O’Toole) who begins testing his devotion to the cloth.
This is an awkward movie to watch. I won't say you can’t tell a story about a man who swears a vow of celibacy being tempted in a non-horror, non-thriller way but keeping it tasteful sounds nigh-impossible. There's a germ of an idea in a scene in which a gay character brings up an interesting point about confession. In this small community, the priest is almost elevated to a God-like level because of his "monopoly" on the church, which is interesting but it feels like an accidental moment of profundity. This picture is essentially a weird kind of doomed romance, with emphasis on the romance. It makes you feel kind of gross seeing these two flirt with each other. Am I supposed to be turned on by this? Eww. No!
The film is essentially two stories, neither of which are particularly interesting. The first is a romance and a waste of time. The moment they meet, you know Father McMahon and Nim will get together. Why? Because they do nothing but flirt and we're subjected to lame scenes where Nim walks into McMahon changing before she admits some sexual facts about herself to him. It’s like a really weird, awkward pornographic film without any nudity, or people you want to see naked in it. You’ve got to have cardboard for brains to not see the signs. At one point, she offers him a drink of strong alcohol. He doesn’t say “no ma’am; when I said I was thirsty I meant I wanted water”, he just takes a swig!
The second story is barely worth noting. It’s just an excuse to have McMahon question his faith. Not whether God is real; whether he’s “doing the right thing” by being a priest. Then we have some frozen red herrings tossed in the mix but no one is interested in those fishes. It all feels very snooty, like the movie (or the novel it’s based on) thinks it knows something we don’t. It’s a mystery where no one calls the police and people do things illogically in order to pad out the running time.
Broken Vows belongs in the same category as “Nunsploitation” films. Who is it made for, and why? I suppose if you’re coveting the priest on Sundays it might be kind of sexy. You could imagine yourself as the Anette O’Toole character? To everyone else, it's just gross, maybe even offensive. The picture rambles on and on, delaying what's obviously going to happen, and for what? so we can see that a regular woman could turn a man of the cloth into a lusty animal? If that's what you want, you'll be waiting a looooong time. At least nunsploitation might have people repenting their lecherous thoughts by whipping themselves into a bloody, shredded mess. There might be some killing involved. You’re not getting anything that exciting out of Broken Vows. (On VHS, November 23, 2015)
So, I suddenly got remined of this great big deleted post from my old blog I made about the G-virus & my thoughts & stuff on it & like lemme go over some stuff real quick : My original post talked about my thoughts on it from like the old days up till now & how like its always kinda confused me surely because I am extremely stupid & have a foggy brain but like I always feel like I miss something in dealing with the G-virus.
Ok so. The G-vrius had unrivalled capabilities as B.O.W at the time of its creation due to its ability to continuously mutate, which came with it having extreme regenerative properties & even gave it the ability to reanimate the dead which is good as a weapon & all, sure, but I think its true purpose & the purpose it seemed that William was focusing on was its capabilities in being an eugenics thing. In fact I BELIEVE it was pitched this way by William directly & Spencer took such an interest that he had the whole NEST created. I think, if I remember right, Wesker notes in his journal how this felt unusual as most of Umbrella’s focus had seemingly been on B.O.Ws prior.
The G-virus was found living inside Lisa Trevor, it was the thing that had kept her alive & pretty much protected her from all further/outside infection of other viruses / parasites demonstrated when it simply absorbed/destroyed the nemesis's parasite she was injected with. It was stable inside her body & as such she had a practically impervious immune system & regenerative capabilities that were beyond extensive & yet she never mutated into anything more horrific than what she already was due to the T-virus.
So turning into big ugly gross monsters is not really ideal in the eugenic territory but impervious immune system & highly accelerated/advanced healing properties are which leads me to think there was more to the G-virus than what we saw. Which means probably the most valuable & key part of the G-virus was its remarkable antibodies (?) & this was probably the part of the project Annette & William were really interested in & working on & developing.
This makes me think about Sherry & Wesker in particular. Back in the old days, prior to the whole “Wesker virus” becoming a thing I always wondered if some “perfected” version of the G-virus, possibly some version of the G-virus that was fused with the DEVIL vaccine to create a more ‘perfect’ form - something that utilizes G’s incredible antibodies but keeps the parasitic nature of G naturalised & thus safeguards from the rampant mutations - was what Wesker injected himself with, particularly as we knew of his close relationship with William. Wesker seemed to exhibit pretty much all the desired properties of a real “g-human” & his eyes in particular were very matched to the ‘eyes’ of the G-virus.
Which always made much more sense to me then this random ass “wesker-virus”. I mean idk if the Wesker Virus always existed what fuck would Spencer have to give about something like the G-virus if he already had a virus that could essentially transform someone into a super-human ? I suppose because the Wesker Virus was suppose to be hyper-crazy selective where as if the G-virus was applied right it could generally benefit the entire human race, not just select individuals ? Although that very selective virus is exactly what Spencer’s crazy racist ass wanted.
Anyway, moving to Sherry, she managed to get all the “”intended”” benefits of the G-virus through her infection & vaccination so yeah I wonder if G was always suppose to be used in conduction with DEVIL in order to unlock those desirable effects ? This seems to be a much quicker/efficient way to “stabilise” a virus than say Alexia’s method of cyro-sleep. ( Although Alexia’s method makes perfect sense for her, someone who was only interested in ‘improving’ herself & not the “human race” as a whole )
Or if there was a more. . . “Complete” version of the virus that just didn’t happen to be the version William injected himself with. Or ultimately if the G virus was ever “complete” in the first place. Thinking that what we saw in the game didn’t at all appear to be the “intended product” in any way.
I DO believe a lot of the extreme negative effects G had on William were due to him infecting himself with it while he was moments away from death & so horribly wounded. Sherry’s manner of infection was different so I wonder if that could have also played a part in why William mutated so fast & so terribly while Sherry didn’t really mutate at all, or at least didn’t get the chance to . . . & how exactly would Sherry have mutated if she didn’t receive the vaccine ? Would she have became something similar to William ? If William wasn’t fatally wounded & so close to dying, what would G have done if he infected himself with it ? Is it possible that G went the way it did because it both never got the chance to “stabilize” in William’s body, given he was so horribly damaged when he infected himself, forcing it to work overtime to repair him but also that it never got the chance to stop “repairing” him, hence causing his intense mutations because of his repeated conflicts with Claire/Leon & the damage he continually sustained.
The eugenic properties of the G-virus don’t ever seem to be focused on again. Its capabilities as a weapon are but never as the ‘cure’ per say, it seemed to be envisioned to be by William & Annette. However when Umbrella European branch messed around with the G-virus they managed to find a way to merge it with a version of t-virus, thus bringing forward all of G’s more desirable effects while dulling/neutralising the undesirable ones. This was called the T-G virus & when Morpheus infected herself with it, while certainly mutating into something inhuman, this wasn’t near to the extent of William & she managed to completely retain her intelligence.
Given William was a near unrivalled genius in his field it seems strange to me that he wouldn’t have been able to produce a version of the G-virus like this himself ? So maybe the G-virus wasn’t actually “complete” & William intended to continue work on it & complete it in a more ‘conventional setting’, where his true vision for it would be appreciated more as oppose to Umbrella’s intense focus on weaponizing their “products” ?
"Not...your...fault." | @domiitor sent -- because it’s sad monster hours
He didn’t raise a hand, didn’t scream, didn’t yell or attack, and yet Annette felt as though she had been struck square in the chest. Breath tore itself from her lungs, a pale, shaking hand clutched her heart almost automatically in a vain attempt to still sudden palpitations. The virologist in her might have found the use of speech fascinating had it been anyone else, but a sudden rush of anguish and something akin to hatred boiled up inside of her. She wanted to be the one to yell, to scream and beat her fists against William’s chest and tell him him he was so stupid for doing what he had done, even if she understood it, even if some small part of her was grateful he was still alive--if she could even call it living. When it came down to it keeping him alive was selfishness to William’s altruism; he was standing there before her, malformed and suffering, not because he didn’t want to die, but because he still had work to do. A family left to protect.
Whatever anger she had felt ebbed away, taking with it her remaining strength. Knees buckled, nearly dropping Annette to the ground, but she grabbed onto the wall for support, eyes purposefully turning away from the creature that was still her husband. A fresh wash of guilt washed over her, her mind suddenly kicking into overtime as though hindsight could save them both from the fate at which they simultaneously arrived. Could she had prevented this if she had been more careful? They had come so close to freedom, flew so near to the sun that they could feel its warmth, so focused on getting out that they hadn’t realized that what was coming for them had already arrived. Couldn’t she have given them that small amount of time they needed if she had just done a little bit more?
Not your fault.
Cold, tearful eyes finally lifted, finding William’s gaze. Her voice stuck in her throat, her mouth suddenly too dry, tongue thick and uncooperative. But the words finally dislodged, came flowing out of her with a surprising amount of strength and warmth, a stark contrast to the cool touch of her palm against William’s chest.
“You’re absolutely right. It wasn’t my fault, and it wasn’t yours either, William. Umbrella created all of this, they are the ones responsible for our pain. For our broken family. But you’ve done enough, now--don’t you think? You’ve worked so hard that I think you’ve earned yourself a rest. You can close your eyes, darling...close them and know that Umbrella won’t get away for what they’ve done. Close them and know that your family is still safe, no matter how shattered we’ve become.”
Stepping away, Annette let her head drop to her chest, tears flowing unrestrained down her face. It was almost comical how emotional she found herself: no matter how distraught and upset she became, she had always struggled to be the strength behind her family, to be the one both William and Sherry could rely on. Wasn’t that the burden of a wife and mother? To hold yourself together, no matter what turmoil bubbled just beneath the surface? But the time had passed for pretending, her facade having cracked long ago. It was time instead to say goodbye, to do what she had not been strong enough to do before. As much as it pained her to think about losing William, she knew that this was no existence for him. Danger to the world or not, he was still her husband, and he deserved to be laid to rest by the woman who still loved him with every fiber of her being.
“Don’t try to talk--you’ve said everything you need to say. Just sleep, William, please--let me at least give you that. It’s the least I can do after everything you’ve done for me. For us. Sleep and let go of all this pain. Of all your fears. But as everything begins to fade remember one thing: I love you, William. And I always will.”
