i did pay an unnecessary amount of attention to the news / politics / current affairs in general as a kid but 2012 remains to my mind a uniquely eventful year
#obviously the news stories i really remember were the ongoing leveson inquiry / phone hacking scandal#and the emerging truth about savile and subsequently yewtree#and in clearly far less serious and more personal and/or mundane ways there were significances too. i think#wettest year on record for england (my house flooded) the non-event that was the end of the world (disappointing)#the london olympics (great news for glass manufacturers)#diamond jubilee too. for one short summer it was like we were really good at sports#i remember being sat in the car hearing on the radio that it’d be the last time in our lifetimes the date would line up (12/12/12)#i don’t know. memory is an odd thing. it just feels like so much happened

Dad went to put on the Les Mis soundtrack after thanksgiving dinner by using voice commands. Immediately, my siblings and I all jumped up to correct him before it could play the Incorrect One. But it’s okay. No need for panic. We managed to get the 1985 Original London Cast playing before there could be any bloodshed.

#we were looking at flats to move into this july and he was talking about how much we'd pay in rent and I just. started panicking#because like. i genuinely don't know if i can afford it. i get worried about affording our current flat. i am terrified#like he said he did the research and said I would be earning enough. but I'm just so fucking scared because like. what if it isn't.#he's okay because he's gonna be earning upwards of £40k probably this time next year. but I'm sat with my £23k job#and he's even talking about maybe eventually moving to LONDON? brother I only just got a job here in the north.#how do I tell him I like living in Manchester and I want a nice house (not a flat) where we can live. i can try london but it'll be hard.#sigh.#me#ramblings

#x#i remember when i was younger thinking that the area i live in in london being weirdly mm. not hostile i don’t think. but not welcoming#to dogs#ppl hardly owned dogs in this area n u rarely saw them as well. and in my school i’m pretty sure there was no doubt a larger number of ppl#that were neutral/scared of dogs than actively liked them like me lol#so me n my family at least who’ve always owned fairly large dogs were used to doing the whole accommodating thing of like. keeping our dogs#away from areas w a lot of ppl n kids n whatnot. n ppl crossed the street anyway to avoid walking by our dogs in the first place 🤷🤷🤷#the whole suburban every house w a family dog thing is. very american. not saying ppl don’t have dogs here obviously#when i used to go therapy in west london i Would see a lot of dog walkers w like. 5-7 dogs at a time#but again like the whole doggo culture/going up to touch dogs like that randomly??? 😬 idk i’ve not seen it like that lol#the last time i remember a group of kids trying to pet nina was when she was a lot younger n they were respectful abt it lol#they yelled from the other side of the street to ask n when i was like sorry she definitely won’t let u touch her they just shrugged n#moved on#anyways. ramblings as usual i was just thinking lol

so tired but too stressed to be sleepy

why hasn't the national archives digitised the records of the construction and expansion of this one specific stretch of railway in yorkshire. why aren't they prioritising digitising collections based on how difficult it is for the people most likely to be interested in their contents to get to kew

“Frodo was a very, very important character in the movies. But he’s also a very difficult character to play and to cast. […] We were convinced that Frodo is gonna be an English actor, ’cause we wanted the Hobbits to basically be English as Tolkien really wrote them. So, we went to London and we started auditioning.
We couldn’t think of any actor to play Frodo. We had nobody in mind. We thought it would be unknown English actor, a young kid. We were in London auditioning for about a month and we’ve probably seen three hundred Frodos. There were two or three that were okay, but nothing magical, you know. ’Cause Frodo had to be magical. Every time the casting room door opened and some nervous young actor would come in, we were saying, ‘is this gonna be Frodo?’ And you sort of know within ten seconds that it wasn’t really Frodo. It was a worry, but we were plugging on.
And then our casting director said to us one day, ‘A package’s just come in the mail. It’s from Elijah Wood’. It was a video tape, a VHS tape. I had heard Elijah’s name, but I’ve never seen a film he’d done. I actually had no face for Elijah, I didn’t know how he looked like.
So, we put the video tape in. Elijah was in LA and heard that we were in London and we’re not gonna come to LA. He really wanted to get this role. So, he hired a dialect coach to teach him accent, he’d gone to the local costume-hire, got some cheesy kind of Hobbit costume on. He’d gone into the trees somewhere behind his house with a friend, and he just videotaped his own audition. He didn’t have our script, so he was reading from the book, he was doing Frodo parts from the book.
I just put this video tape in, and literally, not having known who Elijah Wood was really, I just thought, ‘he’s wonderful, he’s absolutely great’. And so, Elijah cast himself”.

NOT THE GLOBALIZATION ASSIGNMENT 💀 i just finished an essay on the pros and cons of globalization for a contemporary world class except i had to focus on writing the pros because my groupmate was writing about the cons and man i was fighting for my life
Head in hands I might have to write my Abitur about that I don't want to have to write five hours about politics I thought English class had you do more idk Literature or something "Oh but it's like German but in English" In German we are currently doing movie analysis I don't see how those two things are comparable.
But no genuinely I was sitting there an hour just staring at those two pages of text that were all just documenting the way globalisation under the hand of capitalism turns us all into miserable little creatures and nobody profits except the BIG firms and like. My teacher wants us to give quotes we are always supposed to give quotes I can not quote two pages worth of text. That was one of three parts of the assignment. The other two were to analyse how the author uses metaphors (????? We're there even any?????????? I'm supposed to give six examples I can't even remember one?????) And to comment on, explain and state my opinion on either "America first" or "Take back control" as slogans. This woman is just letting me write an exam at this point what even is this.

Maybe counteracted the stupid walk for my mental health by deciding to take a detor and walk through the (seemingly abandoned) cash grab housing development outside of town and instead of looking around at nature, standing and looking at the half built houses while getting increasingly more mad for a while
#the planning permission never should have been granted#its already fucking with things on an environmental level and it's just a load of half built houses atm.#it's a floodplain so now we're all at risk of flooding cause there's nowhere for the water to go#it was half protected green space with a few rare species. half community growing space/paths for walking by the riverside#makes me so angry because we need housing! we desperately need affordable housing. but they don't build any of that#instead the council are completely under the fist of these developers who build shitty overpriced housing that nobody here can afford#and they start building without even having the funds to finish it! so we get stuck with half built houses all over our greenspace when#their speculation doesn't pay off. they don't even advertise these places locally. they're advertised in London to investors#it's infuriating.

The Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series peaked in 2010 or 2012.
The older games are frustrating sure, but when you can’t figure out a timing or something it’s just part of the fun, not frustrating. The newer games have too clear of instructions so when something doesn’t work it’s just annoying.
Also it might’ve just been the specific games available on the demo version of Tokyo 2020, but there’s not nearly enough rapidly shaking controllers in that version. But I’m not paying $60 to find out.
Plus the Vancouver 2010 intro video is really really good. And you can do additional tricks in figure skating by just shaking your remote really hard in between the designated trick spots.
And in London 2012 Sonic wears a life jacket for the water events because he can’t swim.

here's the thing about charles dickens. [discussion of his antisemitism, misogyny, and racism ahead.]
his last, unfinished novel, the mystery of edwin drood, features helena and neville landless, heroic and sympathetic south asian (sri lankan, specifically) characters, and the racism they endure in an english town is relevant to the plot to the point where neville ends up falsely accused of murder. in the wake of the indian rebellion of 1857, dickens applauded the english brutality against "that oriental race," and called for genocide.
fagin is called "the jew" 274 times in the first half of oliver twist. an article in the jewish chronicle asked why "jews alone should be excluded from the 'sympathizing heart' of this great author and powerful friend of the oppressed." at first, dickens dismissed this, and claimed he was just being accurate about london's criminal makeup. but he was moved enough by eliza davis's letters to him on the matter that he halted the printing of the latter half of oliver twist so he could change the text and remove the antisemitic language therein.
dickens was an abolitionist who despised chattel slavery in the united states, and called emancipation a "moral duty." dickens didn't think black americans were intelligent enough to vote, and he wrote an entire character in bleak house who is a joke to be disliked and mocked because she'd rather oversee charity missions to help children in africa than be a proper mother and tend to her own family at home in england.
speaking of one's own family at home in england, dickens smeared his wife, catherine hogarth, publicly so he could justify separating from her and taking up with a younger woman. catherine hogarth was likely mentally ill, likely living with postpartum depression. she was also an author in her own right and loved her family dearly. her reputation never recovered in her lifetime from the claims he made about her. in dickens's novels, time and time again, from nicholas nickleby to david copperfield to our mutual friend to the mystery of edwin drood, men who menace and take advantage of vulnerable women are portrayed as the worst kind of villains, deserving of whatever grisly ends come to them.
charles dickens was both privately and publicly a raging asshole in many ways and the world would be worse off without him, because he wrote for bourgeois, comfortable victorians, the very people who so often failed to "think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys." in the same breath that he calls agnes fleming, who opens oliver twist as an unwed mother dying in a workhouse, "weak and erring," he dares to add that "i do believe that the shade of that poor girl often hovers about that solemn nook-ay, though it is a church." he calculated jo's death to the page in bleak house for maximum effect. but when he wrote of the orphaned crossing-sweeper, "dead, your majesty. dead, my lords and gentlemen. dead, right reverends and wrong reverends of every order. dead, men and women, born with heavenly compassion in your hearts. and dying thus around us every day," people listened.
i dedicated years of my life to reading him and studying him and thinking about him and writing about him and his novels. now, i turn to condemn him; now, i turn to justify him. i wish i had a time machine so i could shake his hand. i wish i had a time machine so i could publicly debate him. i wish i had a time machine so i could break his nose.
charles dickens gives me courage and hope. charles dickens makes me want to tear my goddamn hair out. he is everything i despise and everything i love about the victorian age in one; the term "a man of his time" ought to have been invented for him. the leaps and bounds the victorians made for progress in the public good are only matched in greatness by the extremity of their atrocities against their "fellow-passengers" on this earth. the way we think about nearly every modern social ill can be traced back to the 19th century; the way we think about nearly every modern idea of social justice can be traced back to the 19th century. every last one is writ large and small in dickens's novels. he and his age are the greatest contradictions in human history and that's why i can't shut up about them, ever, even when i am exhausted by them, even when i am inspired by them, even when it was two centuries ago and it shouldn't matter anymore, but it does. it always will.
