Ingo sighed as he laid his bounty in the basin of the small home. You were still out on a survey, as he had checked with your captain to be certain. His pack had made her cock a brow up, yet his explanation soothed whatever worries may have she held. Instead, he politely excused himself and headed to your home at once. There, he slipped off his shoes in the entryway and headed for the small front room, which brought him back to the present. His coat and cap were laid out while his heavy tunic was slipped off. The left him in just his undershirt and slacks.

You had clearly mentioned being sick of potato mochi as of late. He understood. Eating the same thing over and over again could grow boring, and variety truly was the spice of life. That was something he almost definitely recalled, even before meeting you. Something inside of him did not mind the soups and stews often served by the Pearl Clan, but having the same one so many days in a row had been truly maddening. Even if he understood it was due to the difficulty of agriculture in the icelands, he had needed a change. That was why a certain skill apparently came back to him so easily.

He began to wash off the foraged items he brought from his wanderings in the highlands. Irida had commented on his talents with cooking as it almost was as notable as his abilities with pokemon. A comment that he must have been a servant before he ended up here made him feel oddly flustered. That did not seem correct with his more recent memories, however.

Noodles that he had bought from Beni were placed to the side while water was set over your built-in stove to coke to a boil. A knife was taken from your set as he back to chop the ingredients. Ingredients were separated out by how they would be added to the pot. Mushrooms came first, hoping to make the broth that he deaired. A bit of seasonings for flavour that Beni had offered was dumped in, too, but he wondered if it would have the effect needed. When that seemed to have become mixed together in the boil, the noodles were added. Then, after they had become glossy and absorbed the broth, the vegetables previously gathered were also dumped in. The room smelled pleasantly. Ingo sat down and wiped his brow. Even he felt a bit hungry now.

By the time you had arrived home, the dish was ready. You gasped when you were greeted at the door by the Warden. He had leaned down to press a sweet kiss to your lips and help get you ready to relax. Sitting you down near the fire, he filled a bowl to serve you. The hot porcelain almost scorched your hands, but your stomach growled. Beginning to eat, you felt your taste buds alight with flavour. His cooking was wonderful, as it always had been. Your praise spoken to him only made him fluster and look away.

“I am happy to hear that, dearest,” Ingo spoke as you continued to eat, “Irida had said that I must have been a servant from my skills here alone.” You stopped eating mid-mouthful and blinked at him.

“I mean… Kind of? At least in the station,” you nodded, “Well, no, you were in charge there. I guess at home you were.” He had always loved to slip on an apron and surprise you with a meal back in Unova. Then, on his off days, he tended to go crazy over chores. The fact that it continued here in Hisui made you feel a lot better about this entire situation. He was still the same Ingo somewhere inside, after all.

“… I was your servant?” he tilted his head in a familiar manner.

“No, we were together. You just liked to do things constantly, so…” You sighed, “You weren't anyone's servant, no.”

His hand unexpectedly grasped yours as he grew closer. Those flustered cheeks of his haunted your mind. Lips were against your own for a moment before he pulled away.

“I don't think I would mind being your servant,” he mumbled out, “… Won't you let me serve you tonight?”

You were not about to deny such a simple request from the man.

Kya was exhausted. The city was still feeling the effects of the havoc that Kuvira had wrought and days at the evacuee camps were endlessly long and arduous. Despite having worked as a healer for the majority of her life, even in the most impoverished regions of the Earth Kingdom, she still never quite got used to the ache in her chest that came with seeing people suffering.

The apartment she shared with Lin wasn’t far from where she had been working and, although her entire body ached with fatigue, she decided that the walk would help to clear her head. It was reassuring, to walk through the streets she had grown up in and see that, despite the hardships they were facing, people were stubbornly going about their days. People still brushed past her in a rush to reach their destination, the sound of children’s laughter still rang out from the nearby park, and the various smells from nearby restaurants still permeated the air. The city was surviving and Kya was proud to be a part of its healing process.

Stepping through the front door, she was surprised to see her wife’s keys already in the bowl by the door. It was rare that the police chief ever arrived home before she did, especially in the past few days when she had been stuck at the station until Kya was already drifting to sleep. The waterbender felt some of the tension she had been carrying dissipate just at the thought of spending the evening with Lin. As she moved deeper into the apartment, she found the metalbender stepping around the kitchen, a fragrant smelling soup bubbling away on the stovetop as she reached into the cupboard for a pack of noodles. Kya thought she might cry with happiness just looking at her, but she kept moving; she came up behind her to wrap her arms around Lin’s waist, eliciting a yelp from the shorter woman.

“Agh! I didn’t hear you come in.” Lin immediately relaxed into Kya’s embrace and the waterbender pressed a gentle kiss against the exposed skin of her shoulder as an apology. Secretly however, her heart warmed at the fact that Lin felt safe enough in their home not to be constantly on guard, allowing her the rare opportunity to sneak up on her.

“Sorry. I didn’t expect to see you home so early?”

Lin hummed, reaching forwards to add the noodles into the pot. Kya simply moved with her, not willing to let go yet. “I think they’ll survive one evening without me, for once. It does mean I had to bring some paperwork back with me, so I’m not entirely free,” She paused, suddenly shy, “but I wanted to spend more time at home.”

Kya responded by turning her wife around in her arms and leaning down to capture her lips soundly. She smiled against Lin’s mouth as she felt the metalbender’s hands come up to rest against her cheeks, tilting her head to deepen the kiss slightly before she pulled back, “Spirits, I’ve missed you.”

Lin nodded against her forehead, closing her eyes to savour the feeling of holding her wife close again after what felt like far too long. A week of missed opportunities, of only really seeing each other when they curled up in bed to sleep and not being able to really talk, had been almost intolerable. She only pulled away, reluctantly, when the pot behind her started to bubble over. Kya let her go and opened the cupboard to retrieve bowls, but Lin swatted at her,

“Go, sit down. I’ll bring it over.” Too tired to argue, Kya did as she was told and turned to sit cross-legged on the couch. Usually she hated eating anywhere other than at the table, so Lin quirked an eyebrow at her when she followed shortly after with two bowls,

“Long day?”

Kya sighed deeply as she nodded her head in agreement, her headache worsening as she furrowed her brow. Lin leaned over to press a kiss to the crease between her brows as she pressed a bowl into her hands and Kya almost melted at the gesture.

“Yeah. It just feels never-ending sometimes, you know?” Lin hummed in understanding; she certainly did know what Kya meant. “The camps are still awful, but at least we’re starting to see some improvements. How about you?”

The waterbender took a huge bite of noodles and practically moaned in contentment. Lin’s cooking always reminded her of the woman herself; hearty, rich in flavour and unfailingly comforting. Lin smirked at her over her chopsticks and Kya tossed her a wink.

“The triads aren’t showing any signs of slowing down this idiotic turf war, that’s what’s been keeping me at work so late. Mako’s working on a couple of promising leads though.”

They lapsed into light conversation as they ate, not needing to say much else. After both dealing with such chaos at work, they were grateful just to sit down and enjoy each other’s company for the first time in far too many days. Once their bowls were empty, Lin swiped Kya’s before she could even protest and stood up to clear everything away. The healer questioned her when she returned, but Lin only shrugged and sat back down on the couch with a huff. Not wanting to push her any further, Kya chose to say nothing else and instead shifted so that she was sitting against her wife’s side, smiling as Lin wrapped her arm around her shoulders. Her exhaustion was still a burden, but the reassuring presence of her wife at her side made it so much easier to deal with.

When Kya had first moved back to the city to be with Lin, she had been constantly on edge waiting for the urge to run to take over again and ruin everything. But it never came. She had never expected to be someone who would happily settle down, coming home to the same place and the same person every day, but here she was; she had made a home at Lin’s side and she had never felt safer or more at peace.

“Thank you,” she muttered, twisting so that she could look her wife in the eyes.

Lin cocked her head, “For what?”

“For caring about me.” Lin looked surprised, so Kya clarified, “I’ve never had anyone care about me like you do.”

Kya could count on one hand the amount of time she’d seen Lin’s eyes get as soft as they did then. She never had her guard up when they were alone together anymore, but it was still rare for her emotions to show so clearly on her face. It made the healer lean up and kiss her softly before she could even start to speak.

“You don’t have to thank me for that,” Lin said when they separated, her voice barely above a whisper as she rubbed her nose against Kya’s affectionately, “I couldn’t help it if I tried.”

They were both craving for ramen. They walked to a nearby convenience store and got some cup noodles, adjourning to the park on the opposite side of the small street.

They slurped on their noodles quickly, there was something comforting about convenience store bought ramen. The saltiness. The artificial chicken flavour. The warmness of the soup warming the body.

As Mark gathered their empty cups and chopsticks into a plastic bag and got up to go to the bin Y/N said, “Let’s talk.”

❆ SEATTLE (ep3): dinner @ Noi

Our 1st meal in Seattle~

Noi Thai Cuisine, located at: 1303 1st Ave.

The interior was VERY dark! We quickly realized that Noi was more like a pub/lounge type of place. They are family-friendly; however, the atmosphere screamed date night or catch-up sesh with friends type of place.

Got a table by the window, facing The Harbour Steps.

Loved these lights!

Let’s take a look at the dinner menu (we happened to just miss the happy hr menu).

oooooOOh interesting.

I know the menu text is too small for you to actually read, but I still included them here so you can get a sense of how ‘fancy’ they are haha the pictures are all coloured & the menu paper is nice & glossy.

They have a very good description of what each dish is underneath the name of the dish.

Honestly, the menu was more like a food magazine than a menu :P

Ahh. .. finally entering the noodle/rice section.

This is probably the section that was most familiar to me.

Noi also offers a number of vegetarian dishes.

We ordered our food & it came out pretty fast, despite the place being very busy!

The appetizer sampler~ Not gonna lie, DL & I were both intrigued by the ‘egg shell presentation’ lol but we also wanted to try other appetizers so the sampler was the best option. Let’s take a look at each part individually.

A. Crab wontons. Super crispy & filled with *real* crab meat (& cream cheese). The filling was creamy but had thin bits of crab meat.

B. Thai-style shrimp cakes. I’m a loyal fish cake girl so this shrimp cake . .. I was quite indifferent abut it. I was imagining something like the shrimp-stuffed bell peppers or eggplants that you could get at dimsum, where the shrimp is bouncy. But this fell short of that- there was a mushiness to it bcos the shrimp paste was made into some sort of paste/batter, rather than a primarily-shrimp paste. Does that make sense? Anyway, I though it’d be pure shrimp but it wasn’t, & I felt a little cheated.

C. Crispy taro rolls. This was better than expected. I thought it only had taro inside but it had some shrimp or prawn mixed in it as well!

D. Cock-A-Doodle-Doo. (Negligible) hint of spiciness from the tom yum bisque with deep fried prawn (bits) & tobiko. Sooooo sooo creamy mixed with crunchy & ‘popping’ textures. This was very satisfying from a textural perspective.

Of the 4 items, my order of preference: C > D > A > B.

Honestly opinion about the 4 items in general. .. I didn’t really get much “Thai” flavour in any of the 4 items :S I feel like these things could be ordered from any western restaurant, especially with more & more western pub/lounge places offering Asian-inspired appetizers/flavours. Wonderful presentation but altogether, not bad, but not great. I would recommend getting the Cock-A-Doodle-Doo on its own if you were to come here. It is different & I think it’s worth a try!

Original Tom Kah Gai. “This soup feature chicken, straw mushroom caps, lemongrass, spring onions, cilantro and enticing taste of galangal roots infused with coconut milk.” (copied directly from website)

From our personal Thai cuisine experiences, we have not seen/heard of this milky soup, so we decided to try it. The appearance looked so creamy & harmless, but this soup actually had quite a sharp flavour to it! Nevermind the ingredients used (nothing spectacular about it) but the soup was like WOWWW! Very citrus-y & strong lemongrass flavour will hit you first, & then it fades, & that’s when the subtle coconut flavour comes out. I really liked it!

Clay Pot Crab with Glass Noodles. (they say glass noodles but it’s the thin clear vermicelli noodles that you often find in spring rolls, aka cellophane noodles, not the stuff you use for japchae)

“A century old Thai favorite dish includes a combination of spiced crab, bacon, ginger, cilantro, white pepper on top of stir-fried glass noodle with our delicious homemade sauce.” The sauce was too zesty-spicy for me, so I actually didn’t eat the noodles with the sauce, but others might like it. I wasn’t a big fan of this dish; flavour was good (but did not scream “Thai” to me.. . honestly, it was just like a stir-fry that one could make at home using soy sauce + fish sauce), & abundant crab meat (more than I had expected!)... the biggest concern was the noodles =/ it was stiff! You know when you cook noodles sometimes & then it cools .. . & then it becomes dry & takes the form of the bowl? Well, this was like that. The noodles weren’t loose; it was stuck together. You literally needed to CUT a section out bcos using fork/chopsticks to take some was nearly impossible (you’d be taking out all the noodles with you). I was disappointed by this.. .

So yeah. .. ummm .. lol not the best 1st meal. However, the soup was very delicious & enjoyable!

Fun fact: they are a popular stopover spot for Thai Airways crew!
