118 --- An Educational Manifesto

Preface

I know there is no image this post, I spent all my time writing it this evening and I could not think of a good image for this. If you have a view on education in NZ, please read this through. It is an important topic and I would love to hear some input/contrast on my ideas. There is a TLDR (too long didn’t read) at the bottom.

Introduction

The current education system in New Zealand is inadequate and old-fashioned, students are not taught how to think, they are taught how to pass tests. The system needs to be built upon principles of purpose, engagement, creativity and productivity so it is prepared for the future. Preschool and primary schools start off well, I do not have any critique for that sector of education but when children get to intermediate school and high-school, issues arise. At a time of their lives when students should be preparing for what they will be doing in life, they are pressured by the expectations from school and their peers.

I have heard from too many students who find it difficult in High School, bullying, peer pressure and expectations plague our students. Instead of learning how to become productive people with creative skills, hobbies and interests. Students spend too much of their education “studying” for their next test. This is not real “studying”, students are disengaged from the subjects that they are being required to learn.

This is not the fault of the teachers, they are doing the best job they can do with the policies and structures in place, in fact the current high-school education system is almost as much of a burden on teachers as it is on students. This is not a financial issue, it is not an issue of under-funding, throwing money at schools will not resolve the issues being outlined here.

The majority of the education system in New Zealand is still based on the industrial era style education, where students are put through like products on an assembly line. In this system, each student is tested for quality control and then stamped with a level of competence.

I cannot believe that with all this time spent on discussing progressive policies, climate change and social equality and equity. Nobody is talking about progressing the education system. Sure, there is plenty of talk that the education system needs to be improved but I do not see any real substance of how to actually do it.

Maybe this is because the majority of the people in this country have gone through the education system, it is normal, they cannot think of how it could be any different. This is where I may have an insight, I am one of the small percentage of people in the country who was homeschooled. I had a very different sort of education than what is found in school. This allows me to look at the high-school education system as an outsider, as someone with a fresh perspective.

A good education system needs to be based on principles. These are the principles I think an education system should incorporate.

Purpose Students need to have the opportunity to discover their purpose at High School.

Engagement Students do not learn what they are forced to learn. They need to be given the chance to learn by doing what motivates them.

Creativity All subjects involve creativity. It is essential for innovation. Mathematics and STEM would be picked up by many more students if they were given the opportunity to be creative within these subjects at school.

Production Being productive starts at school, students need to work on projects, hobbies and become producers of wealth rather than consumers. With the internet, being a consumer has never been so easy, people can watch any movie at a touch of a button. Production, creating content and solving problems is also essential for the healthy emotional state of a person. I would argue that a lack of production and purpose are two of the factors for increasing rates of depression and anxiety in young people in this country.

How to do it

I am not going to explain how to build an education system from scratch, I understand that any change to the education system needs to be built on top of what already exists. The steps outlined below explain how I would change the education system.

Redefine Tests Tests should not be something students prepare for, this sounds like a crazy idea but its not. The purpose of a test is to measure a student’s progress. It’s not a target or goal for a student to reach. The culture of exams and the pressure that they impound on students is incredibly unhealthy for a student’s well-being. It contributes to the rising Anxiety and Depression rates in this country.

Redefining tests is easy, tests can be changed so they surprise students and they should not be based on the ability for a student to recall information like a computer. They should be either open-book or based on measuring the understanding of a student and not their short-term memory. End of year external exams need to be removed and replaced with reoccurring tests throughout the year (these already exist, they are called internals).

The tests do not need to be radically different, the infrastructure is already there, it boils down to a change of process. To clarify, national standards should not be removed, they should simply be used as a measuring tool instead of a target that students aim for.

Replace credits with CV/Portfolios The credit system in schools is a bit like the tax system, it is complex. One of the problems with the school system is that it does not reflect adult life. Credits do not exist after students leave school, companies do not give people credits when they change job. It doesn’t make too much sense.

Students don’t get it, they almost need professional advice in order to navigate the credit system. What can happen is that there is a portfolio system where students are able to keep a record the skills they gain from their education. Whether this is done on an NCEA web-platform or on a personal level can be decided upon.

The important aspect here is that with a portfolio/CV system, students will be getting ready for work, they will be learning how to present themselves, they will be keeping a record of their achievements. They will know where they stand. Depending on the method of record keeping, this may or may not need some infrastructure changes (such as a government website).

Compulsory Productivity Taking numeracy and literacy is compulsory and this is a very good thing. There is another thing which needs to be compulsory (there is an upside to this one as it does not require more teachers). Projects should be compulsory at school. Students should be required to complete personal projects and be given allotted time to spend on these projects.

There shouldn’t be any restrictions on these projects, for example students may wish to create a game or a movie. They may wish to create a robot or experiment with electronics. They may wish to compose a song and complete a performance. These projects will inspire the students, give them a direction, a purpose and look great on their CV’s. It will encourage individual learning and students will have the resource available on the internet in order to educate themselves on their projects. Again, this change will not need major infrastructure changes, I am sure most highschools have internet availability and/or areas where students can work on projects either together or as an individual, it will require students to have the time at school to work on such projects. Encourage Creativity & STEM Out of the all the modifications which have been proposed in this manifesto, this is probably the most difficult to implement. There is a reason why students are losing interest in STEM and it is not because the subjects are boring. It is because the way they are taught is. One of the most common misconceptions about STEM fields is that they are not creative fields. This could not be any further from the truth. Creativity is an essential part of STEM, in fact without it, there would be no STEM, scientific innovation is based upon creativity and exploration. Although the type of creativity is different to what is commonly referred to such as Art, Music, Literature and Film. A person who is passionate about STEM can be just as creatively brilliant as individuals in the more traditional arts. The only reason this is difficult to see is because such creativity is hidden behind jargon and specific knowledge of the subject. STEM subjects in schools need to be taught in a way which encourages exploration of the subject without sacrificing the facts and knowledge which is required for them.

Conclusion

Education is the foundation of our society, with better educated students, they will grow up and fix the problems we are currently stuck with. Significantly improving the current education system in New Zealand is not difficult. The changes here do not require significant investment, all they require is a change of policy.

I do not proclaim to be an expert on education, I only proclaim that I am lucky to have had a great, meaningful education and I wish that every other New Zealander can have one too. I want young people to have the opportunities I had, the opportunity to personally explore, discover, create and develop.

I mean DIY, it’s in our DNA [1].

Okay. So in light of the last week (today is 1/30/17), I feel it’s time somebody made a post about filtering some of the internet barrage of current events.

Let me make clear that I am not saying we should pretend everything’s okay. It’s not, and the people who are saying “don’t let this become normal” are right.

The thing is, the nightmare worsens daily, and every single bit of it is all over the internet. It’s too much. I know I’m not the only one with mental health issues that are exacerbated by… well… the direction the USA is currently hurtling under the command of He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named and his cronies. (I’m calling him that now. Consider it black humor.) If I see it constantly, there’s a very good chance my brain will normalize it just out of fatigue.

So here are things I know so far about how to not have to see all of it every time I go on social media. (Word of warning: Anyone who gives me flak about what I filter out or why will be summarily blocked.)

First of all:

A Medium.com article: How to #StayOutraged Without Losing Your Mind. The author says everything much more eloquently than I can, and this article is what got me thinking about this post.

For Tumblr:

I myself use @new-xkit-extension to filter my feed. (Once it’s installed, open up the settings and add the Blacklist plugin to it. PostBlock and Mute are also good.) I know a lot of people swear by Tumblr Savior as well.

On mobile, XKit for iPhone exists as a paid app. Washboard is the only free solution I’m currently aware of, but I actually used it as a dash replacement on my laptop for a while and it’s quite nice. It can import XKit and Tumblr Savior blacklists as well.

For Facebook:

There are built in features for unfollowing people/pages without unfriending/unliking them, if you just need to not see the latest spiel from Great Uncle Hubert. And you can always hide individual posts. But sometimes… ya need more. So.

Social Fixer, bless them, has implemented both a keyword blacklist and a more complex filter system, including regularly-updated filters you can subscribe to. One is for politics.

I haven’t tried out the Chrome extension Remove All Politics From Facebook, as I am a Firefox fan, but it sounds blissful.

Those are my two main social media platforms. This means that, sadly, I do not know about filtering that may or may not be available for Twitter or any other platform really. I am sorry.

(I do think it would be cool if we had a massive “block Trump on Twitter” campaign—deprive him of an audience, he hates that—but as I barely use Twitter I am not the person who can lead that charge.)

How I Am Staying Informed Anyway (or trying to)

Well, I signed up for two mailing lists. One is the venerable Snopes, which will tell you the rumors and to what extent they are and are not true. The other is theSkimm, which is a bit ad-laden but boils the big national news stories down to something easy to understand—and fills in any important background, to boot. (They also link to their sources if you want to know more; a random-ish sample from the latest newsletter gave me Bloomberg, The Atlantic and The Washington Post. So their sources seem fairly reliable.)

What I have not been able to do is watch TV news or, as I found out the hard way this morning, listen to radio news. (If you have a radio alarm clock, take my advice and do not set it to NPR. I love NPR dearly, but I’m switching to an all-music station for waking up because I just cannot start my day with You-Know-Who’s latest shitshow.) I’m even loathe to read the newspaper at this point.

Stuff’s gonna get through. Photo posts, untagged posts, XKit having a blip (it’s done that several times for me lately; were it human I’d say it was flagging under the strain), and the thing where posts tend not to get blocked until a few seconds after they’ve loaded.

So there are gonna be days when the best thing to do is to scroll really fast, and days where maybe it’s worth the energy to see and comprehend and be thoroughly appalled, and also, days when it’s better to just log off and read books/play with your pets/learn to crochet.

But I hope this will help someone anyway.

Dismembered Arms & Wonderful Humans

Most of my students knew how I felt about Kołobrzeg. They knew that, for a variety of reasons, it was about as much fun as having an assailant violently rip my arms from my body and use them to beat me whilst mockingly asking "why are you hitting yourself?".

As such, I was often asked why I would subject myself to such barbarism. The answer was simple: I adored my students. With very few exceptions, they were lovely, open-minded humanoids and I wanted to get to know them, their culture, and, of course, help them speak English like weirdos.

While many students came and went for one reason or another, there were some who I saw essentially every week for the duration of my time in Kołobrzeg. Here they are, based on the day of the week I had them:

Mondays

My "Business English" class was an intermediate-level group of 7 adults who all worked for the same company. With an 08:00 start time -- and on Mondays, no less -- it wasn't always easy for everyone but they were a fun group. For the most part, they were engaged, asked questions, and were clearly interested in improving and learning what sorcery brought a guy from southern California, of all places, to a small city in northern Poland. To my delight, by the end of our time together, we were having more spontaneous conversations than using the book, which was good for everyone, methinks.

Dawid, an 11-year-old boy, came to me after school and was always a pleasure even though he couldn't even put a sentence together, let alone have a conversation. Every week, I'd start our class by asking him what he did over the weekend, and his answer never waivered; he "played his console". XBOX, that is. That little brain-melting machine was his pride and joy. In time, I came to recognize when he didn't understand what I'd said or asked but acted like he did. Occassionally, he'd say "yes" with all kinds of confidence even though I hadn't asked a yes/no question. He was a smart kid who was able to laugh at himself and was always willing to practice.

The "Teens" class was next. They were an interesting bunch of high school students with varying levels of English, though all of them were conversational.

Weronika was the one I mentioned in a previous post that loved pups and volunteered at the local animal shelter weekly. She and her friends Ola and Oliwia were very quite in the beginning. Eventually (read: a month before I left), Weronika and Ola opened up because the class size got smaller, so we were able to actually get to know each other in a way that wasn't possible with a larger group. That's when Weronika invited me to walk some doggos with her! They were the only two who showed up to our final class, and even got me a tear-jerkingly thougthful gift!

Asia and Iden, who were aunt and nephew respectively despite being the same age, were the talkers of the group. And I mean that in the best way possible. I could always count on them to keep the conversation going! Asia, in one of the most spectacular acts of kindness I experienced in K-rzeg, invited me to spend Christmas with her and her family. They were tremendously warm and welcoming, the food was lovely (except the "gelly fish" - nie dziękuję!), and they taught me a ton about Poland and Polish Christmas. It was a truly heart-warming experience that I shall ne'er forget.

They also initiated "food lessons" (or "potlucks", as I call them). Everyone made food, brought it in, and we had the lesson in the dining room while sharing a meal. Another time, we all chipped in and bought a pizza and drinks (no, it wasn't Vodka!) to celebrate Iden's birthday. That was a glorious day!

Oliwia P. kept me on my toes with her depth and insight, though I think there was more to her than I got to see in the context of our group lessons. As someone who has done a gaggle of volunteering, I was impressed when she went to the Dominican Republic with her parents to do some volunteer work. Her friend Klaudia came to some classes but I think she said about 31 words all year, so I didn't get to know her too well.

A guy by the name of Jacek was the last to join the group. He didn't make a good first impression (he stared at his phone for 90% of his first class), but he ended up being quite engaging.

Next up was my "Adults" class, which was 5 low-level, working adults ranging in age from 25 to 45, I think. They were lovely people that were eager to learn but it didn't make sense for them to have classes with me because they were so low level that we could barely communicate. For that reason, I had to use a book that, thanks to Terry, wasn't appropriate for them so I was constantly simplifying or completely skipping entire sections. Those folks needed to be practicing the basics, not learning the nuance of cynicism (true story!).

Karol, a first year high school student who was in an IT-focused program, was a bit of a wild card for me. I never really knew what to talk about with him, but somehow we kept the conversations going. Whenever I got into a pickle in terms of having nothing lined up to talk about, I would use my admittedly outdated knowledge of IT to spark a conversation.

Tuesdays

A few months into my stay, I got a new student named Magda. She was beautiful soul in her mid-20's who wanted to improve her English, partly just for herself but also to feel more confident while traveling. Like me, she had grown tired of the routine of "normal" life and was looking to change things up. As I had walked down that same road, I was perfectly suited to not only help her with English but also to give advice related to backpacking and how to get over the mental barrier of letting go of the things we're so used to having. It was quite exciting to be a part of her journey! (Update: She's backpacking in the Philippines as I write this!)

Initially, I met Monika in my "Business English" class. Her level was a bit lower than the others, which is why she wanted to have individual classes as well. She was a Kołobrzeg native that had lived in Spain and Argentina for many years, so she spoke Spanish fluently and handled the Spanish-speaking markets at her job. Whenever she couldn't explain something to me in English, she'd swtich to Spanish and I understood more often than not, so that was handy.

Natalia was Monika's 13-year-old daughter. At first, we could barely communicate. That was nerve-racking, but as she got more comfortable with me and gained confidence, it got easier. Her mom told me that was enjoying our lessons, which was the first time she'd been even remotely excited about English, so she was thrilled. By the end of my time in Poland, we were able to understand each other well enough to maintain (simple) conversations.

Wednesdays

Borys, the tallest 16-year-old in the universe, was an incredibly nice kid who lived and breathed basketball. For the NBA playoffs, he stayed up all night to watch the games live. In 8 months of classes, I don't think a single one went by without us talking about basketball. That's quite a feat for me considering I could not care less about the sport. A few times, I tried to mix up the topic but we almost always hit a dead end and turned into awkward turtles. Luckily, it was easy enough to quickly Google "basketball news", then let him run with whatever headlines I found.

A second year high school student, Kinga, was one of the hardest working people I'd ever met. As arguably my highest level student, our lessons covered a multitude of topics ranging from dance class (hers, not mine) to traveling to the daily struggles of having long hair. Given her high level, she was hoping to refine her knowlegde of the simple things that don't come up conversation very often, such as "windowsill". We got along so well that she wanted to continue our lessons after I came back to the US. (Update: We have indeed started having lessons via Skype.)

Łukasz had a wife and young son and was probably in his late 30's. They owned a local business that catered to the summertime tourists, so he was taking advantage of the off-season and improving his English. While our conversations frequently drifted towards the depressing side of life, such as politics, climate change, and social media addiction, they were always thought-provoking and enjoyable. And when the laptop I had borrowed from the school decided to stop working, he lent me one of his! That was a life-saver because I had just started teaching online and couldn't continue without a laptop.

Even with a 20-year age gap and wholly different upbringings, Kasia and I had an extraordinary amount in common. She was one of the few students with whom I never worried about running out of topics to discuss because we were both able and willing to talking about anything and everything. Our conversations seemed to always boil down to our shared fascination with human nature; why people do what they do. In fact, we were often so deep in conversation that we'd lose track of time and go over by 10 or 15 minutes. I was (and am) genuinely excited to see where she goes in life as she needs and deserves more than Kołobrzeg can offer.

Thursdays

Another second year high school student, Ola, came to me twice a week because she had signed up to go to New York for an English course during the coming summer. For a while, her friend Roxanna was coming with her but she got a job and had to stop. Anywho, even though she'd traveled a fair amount, Ola was a bit nervous about living in such a big, busy city. I assured her she would adjust and provided as many tips as a I could considering that I'd only been there once. She was incredibly smart, though I don't think she'd admit, and I think she'll go on to do great things! (Update: She's currently in New York, making oodles of friends from all over the world, and loving it!)

Fridays

My only class on Fridays was with Marek, a 14-year-old who played soccer in a club, loved to ski, and was a big fan of movies, especially ones with superheroes. We spent many a class talking about the myriad of superhero movies and characters, and watching trailers for upcoming releases. We talked about what might happen in "Avengers: Infinity War" more than I'm comfortable admitting in writing. Coincidentally, it was released the weekend before I left Poland, so our last class was a real geekfest.

Each of the people mentioned above -- and a few other non-students who I'll write about in another post -- played a part in my decision to stay in Kołobrzeg, and I'm thankful for every one of them!

Of course, being a good listener requires a little give and take. Good listeners are still good conversationalists.

The Polish Boy: A Cleveland Superfood

It is unfathomable that you have in no way heard of LeBron James and the World Champion Cleveland Cavaliers, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Superman, yes, (the authentic Superman), the mistake on the Lake, the fumble, the shot... OK, now I'm getting terrible. Well anyway, one factor you've got likely never heard of that Cleveland is well-known for is the "Polish Boy".

No, it's now not a boy band from Eastern Europe. A "Polish Boy" is a sausage sandwich, normally made with smoked char-grilled Kielbasa filled right into a giant hotdog roll and drowned in a candy and highly spiced barbecue sauce, covered with French Fries, and funky creamy cake recipes Coleslaw.

Trust me, it's exact...

Even Esquire Magazine has fallen underneath its spell, by using dubbing it "soul on white"... As in white bread. And Wendy Williams has even paid homage to its majesty on her name sake show.

As popular as Polish Boys are in town, depending on in which on the town you are, they may be a touch hard to discover. When I turned into a kid, we used to get them on our way to the Cleveland Indians video games from the numerous sidewalk companies downtown by means of the stadium. Nowadays, your nice guess is "Seti's", which is a cupcake recipes food truck that's generally parked at Dean Supply, a restaurant deliver in town of Woodland Ave. Additionally, maximum Soul Food restaurants like B&M's and Hot Sauce Williams can have the authentic and additionally they make their personal twist on the conventional.

I know you are likely wondering, "If they're so suitable, how come I haven't heard of Polish Boys?
