Help me pick a discount set of microscope slides

So, long story short, I was browsing a scientific supplies website for entirely non-microscope related reasons and I noticed they were having a discount sale on some really nice pre-prepared microscope slides, and as I microscope-haver, I decided I should look into getting some.

Except I think the reason they're discounted is that they're all rather... eccentric? Eclectic? Anyway, which of these selections would you go for?

alright me and @chaos-caverns just spent the past few hours spitballing back and forth thoughts and ideas about triton biology within the jrwi riptide universe. here's what we got so far:

triton evolved to survive both in water and out of it (i mean they breathe air), but it's unlikely that they evolved to live on land/above water. obviously being on the surface won't kill them (we have three very alive examples to prove that) but they probably experience some serious debuffs while up there.

triton are described to live in very deep places, therefore being deep sea inhabitants.

in riptide we also have multiple references to the fact that the buildings in the undersea, or at least in the area that gillion grew up in, are in fact not filled with water, but with air. this means that triton can maneuver both through water and through air/on ground without issue. (this includes any differences in stuff like gravity, drag, walking vs swimming etc.)

we also see humans inside the capitol building, which means the atmospheric pressure inside that building, or at least that room, has to be much lower than the pressure in the water surrounding the buildings, which in turn means that triton (and other underwater races) are not harmed by drastic changes in pressure, nor by the much lower pressure of above water at mean sea level.

however, since building structures that can withstand the difference in atmospheric pressure is unnecessarily expensive and inefficient, it's likely that in general the rooms, even if filled with air, have the same pressure as the water outside, meaning that triton are not at all used to the low atmospheric pressure of the oversea, and any triton coming to the surface will most likely face some aches and pains while their body adjusts.

on top of that, fish can and will get sunburnt if the water is too clear or they swim to close to the surface, and the sunburns are much worse, sometimes even detrimental to the fishes health. this would mean that triton probably have very sun sensitive skin and if at the surface might need to stay in the shade or get some special potions to avoid permanent damage to their skin.

deep sea fish are much less dense than other fish for buoyancy reasons (if you've ever scuba dived before you know this). that includes their bones. triton have brittle bones and weigh much less than one would suspect.

triton definitely have some mammalian traits, as gillion has been described to sweat on multiple occasions

now for something really fun: the opah is the only known full warm blooded fish, and because of that has much more energy and is much faster than the other, very slow, deep sea fish that need to conserve their energy. it also has an internal temperature regulation system not unlike a radiator built in that is mostly used to keep it warm, but can also cool it down. considering triton seem to be the strong, agile, fighter type (pursuit predator), and don't overheat despite the vast difference in temperature between the undersea and the oversea, a circulatory system reminiscent of the one the opah has seems likely. again that just means the temperature change won't kill them, they might still get uncomfortable with the heat at first, or just in general. this could be one reason why gillion keeps jumping overboard. (trying to fact check some stuff and i just found out that some lizards cool off by standing around with their mouths open. i think that would be a very gillion thing to do)

now for something really really fun: the lungfish! and yes it's exactly what it sounds like, it's a fish with both gills and lungs. and it can fucking breathe below and above water. triton having both gills and lungs officially makes sense. (the lungfish is a freshwater fish found in shallow rivers and such, and i don't know how this would translate to a saltwater deep sea humanoid creature, if at all, but this is fucking fantasy alright? we're allowed to pretend that this is flawless logic)

fish, like amphibians, need to keep their skin moist if they want to survive. we just don't talk about it because most fish can't breathe above water. another reason why gillion jumps off the ship constantly. also explains why he keeps saying "stay moist" to caspian, who does not, in fact, need to stay moist.

now for the eyes. there's two factors to that: light sensitivity and light refraction.

let's start with light sensitivity. as we have previously established, triton did not evolve for survival on the surface, and they are deep sea creatures. both of that explains the darkvision, but also implies that their eyes are very likely to be highly sensitive to light and the daylight might be too bright for them to really be able to see well. as for a real life example, shark eyes are super well equipped to see in dark, murky waters as they have a layer of mirrored crystals behind their retina, reflecting the picture into the retina again to increase clarity. and bottom-dwelling or nocturnal sharks are in fact pretty light sensitive. all in all this makes for a good estimate for triton eyes. the fact that gillion's vision would already be too bright makes the fact that he keeps staring into the sun even more concerning. then again if you're already constantly blinded you might as well, right? (also i don't know if i'm remembering this correctly but isn't gillion's perception pretty low? this could be part of that. potentially)

now light refraction. the refraction of light underwater is different from the refraction in air. that's why everything is blurry when we open our eyes underwater, but not when we wear goggles. but we evolved to live above water, while triton, as previously established, evolved to live both in water and in air. since evolution would have no clue that they already see bad when in the sun and the smartest move would be to make them able to see when underwater really good, the most likely result would be that in an attempt to optimize triton would end up farsighted underwater and nearsighted in air, like frogs.

since triton's eyesight seems to be less than optimal no matter what, they have probably developed some senses to compensate, for example picking up subtle vibrations in the water around them, or good hearing or sense of smell.

a lot of aquatic mammals can close their nostrils so they don't get water in them, and seals can do the same to their ear canals. triton would also do that i think.

the fins on the side of triton's heads might be used for not only the usual fin stuff, like balance and steering, while underwater, but also as a sort of outer ear that funnels the sound waves into the ear canals to amplify their hearing while outside of it, and on top of that to express emotion, similar to almost every mammals ears except humans'. the fins on triton's limbs might also reflect their emotions, though probably much subtler. a lot of animals also use their ears to regulate heat, and this could very well translate to triton's fins.

also one final fun thought we had was that even though triton seem to be pursuit predators (actively hunting and fighting and running and stuff), they might be ambush predators instead (sneaking, ambushing etc.) and the reason gillion is Like That is because of his training, not because of triton biology.

i desperately hope there's no mistakes in this because there is no way that i am proof reading all of that at 1 am. anyways if you read this and think "oh hey, i know some stuff about deep sea fish/ aquatic mammals/ physics!" feel free to add some stuff. and if i said something wrong don't hold back.

It's A Kind Of Magic

The journey so far...started terrifying, she had appeared into the world in front of a massive metal lion, quickly running out into a mountain range, and down those mountains into the forests below.

Once she'd managed to get the hang of hunting the small bird like dinosaurs populating the woods, she had been slowly making her way towards any signs of civilization, and now, as she saw a couple of humans passing by...riding atop metallic spinosaurids, looking down at her phone, it identified them as "GalvaSpino Zoans" , the amphibous quadrupeds drawing large wagons of cargo behind them, sails collecting solar energy as they went, she knew she had to be close.

She followed the path they were walking down, and eventually, she came upon a sign that said "Welcome to Solvana", the first glance it briefly looked like some sort of circles with minor kanji involved...before her brain adjusted for the language.

As she walked into the town, she noticed a plethora of other fox people, and what seemed to be some sort of mechanical humanoids, multicolored armored plates serving as a sort of skin lawyer over the gears and wiring that served as simulacra of organic biology. The two very different kinds of people interact relatively peacefully, walking hand in hand, and as the girl made her way to the closest town hall or something of the like, the presence of the two races driving cars took her by surprise. She couldn't help but marvel at the sights. ...and as she looked behind her, she noticed the little purple llama still following her.

"...Maybe I can sell you to make some cash until I can figure out what I should be doing for work-" she mused picking the chibi creature up and staring her in the eyes for a brief few moments....and as she slowly lowered the llama...she noticed a building labeled "Adventurers Guild." "...Well what do you know-" she looked down at her phone for a moment in thought, from her hunting earlier, she'd gained quite a bit of experience points to use for that whole skill tree thing she managed to bargain herself into having with that goddess. "...Alright so let's take some sword skills and-" as she pushed the buttons on her phone to claim those skills, she received a complimentary basic sword, seemingly made from the tail of a lesser zoan. And as such, she put the llama down, and walked in, eager to accept one of her first quests! However...as she walked to the counter in the guild hall and started to sign up, she froze up for a few seconds when the woman behind the counter asked her for her name. She thought and pondered 'wait...but... I have a female body so..."

"Oh, I'm...I'm " she paused for a brief moment, and thought of...of Pokemon fanfic she wrote back home, ...that...umbreon OC. "O..oh, I'm...Bre. Bre Porter" she explained. And from there, she got an ID made...And began doing quests for the area around this town. ...It'd be a week or two of sleeping in a nice farmer's barn before she could really afford to start staying in the town's inn. ...When she did finally get to stay in an inn, she looked at herself in the mirror for the first time since she'd arrived in this world.

Was...this allowed? "I'm...cute?" She thought to herself, cupping her chest in the mirror briefly and blinking, was...was this ALLOWED? Was she allowed to enjoy this? ...Was she allowed to...allowed to be a ..be a girl? She stood there and felt tears flowing down her face. ...She...was happy with this. ...but why?

She had learned a lot since she arrived, that the country she was in was Xavara, that the Province was East De Cura, that there was an annual race against giant mechanical raptors once a year, but it seemed she still had a lot to learn about herself.

Listen up kiddos and gather round the rug, i have a story to tell.

i have come here to tell a tale of a game i wish to make, so here! have lore!

all art is by me! and so is the map, with a help of a website.

Welcome to the land of mesura.

This continent has two nations, Melebrinea, and the forest of ivor.

Melebrinea is a medieval nation, while the forest of ivor is more or less a collection of warring tribes.

The universe itself works on laws of light and dark magic.

Light magic mainly affects the physical world, say, casting a fireball or healing a wound. To use magic in the physical world and manipulate it into spells.

Dark magic mainly affects the conscious, thinking world. Things like souls, karma, astral projection, manipulating the mind, or turning thoughts, feelings and emotions into physical energy to put into spells.

These two kinds of magic were created by two “gods”

Synthesis, “god” of light magic and the creation of worlds

Hades, “god” of dark magic and the reincarnation of souls.

I say “gods” because unbeknown to the world of mesura, these two beings are not gods, but corrupt CEOs with the power of the multiverse under their greedy thumbs/hooves.

Shhhh, don't tell anyone this….

The main races in melebrenia are

Melebrineans; pm this world’s humans, colorful eyes and darker skin, with freckles the colors of their eyes.

Elves: they’re elves. Thats...pretty much it. fair skin and hair and clear skin.

Then there's the rarer species.

Fairies; very rare, insectus animorphs. A bug like race, very skilled in magic. They mainly all reside in the kingdom of florentia. they usually are albino, with wings and more limbs the higher up they are. they also have wing like appandages on their head, that work as ears/antenna.

Changelings; a shapeshifting race who’s true forms are very sensitive to light. So some live in caves. Most however, take on the forms of other races or animals, just pretending. their true form has purple skin, and slightly...slimy-

Half-breeds; they are a cross of any humanoid species and animorph species. They mainly live free in the kingdom of arrowmouth, or are enslaved in other kingdoms.

The forest of ivor is made up of entirely animorphs.

They are anamorphic animals, essentially.

Although, in this universe they still carry many feral traits alongside their human traits.

They also look much more animalistic, but bipedal. They can however, move on all fours as well.

There are mammilia, reptilia, avicien, amphibious, aquatic, and insectus.

of course, there are other races and mythical beasts, but these are what are the races usually seen!

The environment of melebrenia/ the forest of ivor is on the colder side. During the winter, the sun will never rise, and the seasons feel a bit like new england.

Melebrinea

Once apon a time, a magic mirror was brought to earth by angels. This mirror allowed people to use light magic with ease all over the nation. A society soon rose up because of this. It was named esvye lenora, ruled by two leaders.

soon, fights broke out because of this mirror between the two leaders.

One said that they had to get rid of it for good, as it was too powerful.

The other said that it must stay, because the nation was founded off of this magic source.

Soon the fight got physical, and they both fell into the mirror, shattering it and killing them both.

Esvye lenora fell with it.

Although, people could still use magic by putting the shards of the mirror in objects, and using those items to cast spells or distill potions...ect..ect..

Now, 8 kingdoms have risen from the fall of this empire, each with their unique trades.

Pinezus, with their rare gemstones and weaponry, along with building materials

Arvern, a deep temperate jungle with mysterious plants and animals to retrieve goods from.

Swampburn, with many herbs and freshwater fish for potion making and other witchery.

Savona, the point where routes from all of the above mentioned kingdoms meet, and thus get a ton of goods.

Deermore, a jack of all trades, although corrupt.

Aquilea; the capital for art and books, along with seafood and ivorian goods brought by ship. Plus ivorian slaves.

Arrowmouth, a kingdom made of the freed slaves from melebrenia and ivorians who immigrated to melebrinea. Full of ivorian goods.

Florentia; a mysterious kingdom of fairies...not much has been documented yet.

There is also the order of vectis, a group of rouges from all kingdoms, who found out if they imbed the magic shards of the mirror into their own flesh they can use magic like the good old days (although overexert yourself and you'll turn into a bloodthirsty monster with no turning back). So now they are trying to take over every kingdom, and unite it by force.

Vectis is led by the only human in melebrenia. They were supposed to be a prophet to put the mirror back together and reunite esvye lenora...but they went mad.

The kingdoms are fighting back in whatever way they can...but…

Also, melebrineans practice light magic and worship synthesis.

The forest of ivor

The forest of ivor is a magic woods, where everyone is the size of mice compared to the environment.

This is because that on this island resides the granddark beasts, mysterious beings who hide deep in the woods.

There is

Ulmos, beast of the dark winter

Suros, beast of the thriving summer

Cykais, beast of the sun, moon, and all that is in the sky

Thasteus, beast of the earth, stone, and all that is growing

And qahtis, beast of wind, water and flames.

The mortal beings who live here are animorphs.

They live in tribes scattered around the island.

The avicen and amphibous live in the trees, and hunt the animorphs and reptillia who live on the ground and in the caves.

The animorphs and reptillia hunt the monsters that live in the woods, basically animals who aren't aniphorphiszed

The hunters use ranged weapons and tamed beasts while he hunted defend their tribes.

The hunted are well, hunted to their bones, furs, basically every part of their bodies can be put to use. (forest of ivor, ivory, bones, eyyy)

they wear light leather and thin metal armour, with the hunted use squared off, thicker swords to defend against an onslaught of arrows from the hunters.

There are neutral parties, the insectus and aquatic. The insectus live in fields with dense grass and the aquatic live underwater.

The people of ivor mainly worship hades and practice dark magic.

They do not need shards from the magic mirror to do so.

While some of these are more of a stretch, I tried to compile the gems I found with names either based on animals or similar to them!

So how about… Cat’s Eye (Chrysoberyl, Jade, Kornerupine, Apatite, Rose Cat’s Eye Quartz, Moonstone, there are many variations!), Wulfenite, Tiger’s Eye, Hawk’s Eye, Amphibole (like… Amphibian? yeaahh), Larvikite, Crocoite, Wolframite, Snakeskin Agate, Zebradorite, Goosecreekite, Septarian (only because it reminds me of the word snake in Spanish for some reason and the colors works for one, but still!), Peacock Ore, Peacock Topaz, Peacock Pearl, Labradorite, Tiger Iron, Condor Agate, Bumblebee Jasper, Crab Jasper, Elephant Skin Jasper, Dalmatian Jasper, Kiwi Jasper, Lizard Skin Jasper, Leopard Skin Jasper, Spiderman Jasper, Wildhorse Jasper, Dragon’s Breath Opal (…might count??) aaaand Medusa Quartz.

New Year's Eve noon arm pump. Which reminds me of a story #randomness When I served in the Navy, I was Master helmsman on board both my ships, an amphib and a carrier. There were only a couple of us on board a crew of 2,800 / 4,500, respectively because of the difficulty level and stresses we undertook daily. While the rest of the ship was sleeping, we were driving through narrow straits where a submarie or an enemy ship could be anywhere near our ship and battle group. One of the tough drills we used to have to undergo for the prestigious qualification was to drive "under extreme dtress" to emulate an emergency or war under fire situation. Where the other helm or officer would mess with us, blind fold us even, yell and talk very loudly or put a fake knife🔪 to our throats, (sometimes while we were getting course or rudder orders from the conning officer or the captain) At first this was extremely difficult and distressing.. But then after a while our minds and bodies got immune to the pressure and stressful conditions to where it was almost easy and automatic. You had to learn how to keep your cool, under any and all circumstances. It taught us to perform under fire, be able to listen to multiple conversations while driving a steady course. It taught us to have very thick skin, cause well you can't take anything personal when the whole crew and their lives depended on your mental strength & toughness while you were getting cussed and yelled at by officers. Life sure isn't always smooth sailing⛵....But it is under stress and resistance that we grow and our character is built. Without the resistance and constant challenge, we don't change, we don't get better and we don't grow. #withoutchallengethereisnochange What challenges and struggles are you subjecting yourself to for the New Year? Phionacaunara is well adapted for aquatic and terrestial warfare and is a quite the amphibian cocktail as it's a mix of many amphibians. Some amphibians representing part of this creature are certainly the frog and toad, also including the newt and caecilian. One of the most incredible abilities of the Phionacaunara is that it can re-generate it's body parts just like it's newt ancestors. Phionacaunara is incredibily easy to train and tame but only by the "Mermanic" tribes of South New Guinea, who are by far a race of human built for amphibic survival. Amphibian: A cold-blooded vertebrate animal of a class that comprises the frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders. They are distinguished by having an aquatic gill-breathing larval stage followed (typically) by a terrestrial lung-breathing adult stage. Frog: A tailless amphibian with a short squat body, moist smooth skin, and very long hind legs for leaping. Toad: A tailless amphibian with a short stout body and short legs, typically having dry warty skin that can exude poison. Newt: A small, slender-bodied amphibian with lungs and a well-developed tail, typically spending its adult life on land and returning to water to breed. Caecilian: 1. Caecilians (pronounced seh-SILL-yens) are tropical amphibians that look like large worms or slick snakes. They have no arms or legs, and sometimes it's hard to tell which end is the head and which is the tail! Their shiny skin is ringed with skin folds called annuli. 2. Caecilians are a group of limbless, serpentine amphibians. Day 474: Janet Foster

Student of the Holliday girl chosen to take on Thomas Tighes scholarship challenge, Janet Foster is a member of the scuba diving club. Declaring that she will help the Holliday college which she is proud to be a student of, Janet Foster was chosen to aid Captain Ranson in his efforts to salvage uranium from the S.S Amphib, to donate to Riverview hospital for medical purposes. Meeting Captain Ranson at the salvage point, Janet declared that she was up to the task which claimed the lives of his diving team. Having brought along her own radiation proof suit, Janet dived down into the briny depths in order to do the impossible and track down that uranium! Reaching the oceans bottom, Janet discovered the sunken ship and entering it, she found the uranium in a storage case, untouched. But as she tried to transport it out, tragedy struck as Janet Foster discovered what became of the fallen crew! For it turns out that the container of uranium had been leaking radiation into the ocean, contaminating the local wildlife! The end result...A giant radioactive clam! Mutated by the uranium, the giant mollusk was devouring anything that came near it! Including....Human beings! Going after Janet the moment she left the ship, the villainous mollusk attempted to devour her! But Janet diving back into the ship, avoided the giant clam by keeping to the confines of the metal ship which was to narrow for the clam to enter. Janet trapped, remembered advice from Wonder Woman about escaping dangerous predators underwater and thus getting a metal bar from amidst the wreckage, Janet began hitting the side of the vessel over and over, confusing the giant clam with the sound waves, buying Janet enough time to swim to the surface with the uranium intact! And thus the uranium was delivered to the hospital and the fourth challenge was completed! Its rather a shame though that Janet was not bitten by the clam. By comic book logic had she been bitten, she would have gained superpowers. I can imagine it now... 'Bitten by a radioactive clam, Janet Foster gained the proportionate speed, dexterity, and skin texture of a clam! Deciding to use her powers for good, Janet Foster became Clammy lass, champion of all that is right!'
