Tumblr media
Name: Kim Age: 26 (27 in September) Writing Blog URL(s): @jinterlude
Nationality: Filipino-American Languages: English  Star Sign: Virgo MBTI: ISFJ-T Favorite color: Any shade of blue  Favorite food: Ah, I have so many, but I really do love ramen & this Filipino noodle dish my grandma makes. Favorite movie: West Side Story. A close second is Pride & Prejudice (2005) Favorite ice cream flavor: Rocky Road  Favorite animal: Pandas Go-to karaoke song: Upside Down by A*Teens (I think I just dated myself)
What fandom(s) do you write for? Mainly BTS, but I have written for SVT, EXO, GOT7, Monsta X, B.A.P, & NCT
When did you post your first piece? Oh dang, when? Hmm… I want to say Oct. 2016 (?) on my first blog (I had deleted and came back to Tumblr).
Do you write fluff/angst/crack/general/smut, combo, etc? Why? I mostly write a combo because it just happens that way! My main genres are: fluff, romance, & humor/crack.
Do you write OCs, X Readers, Ships...etc? I mainly write OCs stories because that’s what makes me the happiest when it comes to writing, but I still write x reader fics for drabbles and oneshots.
Why did you decide to write for Tumblr? Funny story. The reason why I started writing for Tumblr is because an old group of friends said that I should write a funny story based on a college class of mine, so I did and here we are.
What inspires you to write? Usually, it’s my imagination, but other times it’s either the song I’m listening to or even the show I’m currently watching. Right now, my inspiration draws from anime.
What genres/AUs do you enjoy writing the most? Genre wise, I love writing fluff & romance. AUs wise, I’m a sucker for Royal/Royalty. Mafia/Gang & Soulmate AUs would be a close second.
What do you hope your readers take away from your work? Oh, wow. I honestly never thought about that before. I think for me, the one thing I hope my readers get from my stories is at the end of the day, please do something that will make you happy. Your own happiness should always be a top priority for you.
What do you do when you hit a rough spot creatively? I take a break! Instead of forcing myself out of the creativity slump, I just take a break and let my mind recharge. Then, I go back to my outline and look over while listening to music that I know will spark some creativity juices.
What is your favorite work and why? Your most successful? My favorite works (yes, I couldn’t pick just one) are my Royal!AU Seokjin series (Fight for Me & Our Second Chance). I love the amount of time and effort I put into those two stories, and I’m simply in awe at the world and characters I created. My second favorite is my latest Seokjin oneshot, Protecting Each Other. It’s my first story that exceeded 10,000 words, and I’m just proud of how that turned out. Successful wise, I would say it’s, This Little String. It’s a Soulmate!Taehyung oneshot based around the red-string of fate, and every other month, I see someone like and/or reblog it, so I say that’s pretty successful!
Who is your favorite person to write about? Seokjin hands down. I mean, not only is he one of my ultimate biases, but for some reason my creative banks dishes out ideas and inspiration for him like it’s nothing.
Do you think there’s a difference between writing fanfiction vs. completely original prose? I personally don’t think so. You are still writing original content that derails from the source material (or adds to it), all you have to do is just replace your idols’ name with an original character name, and there you go. What do you think makes a good story? For me, I’d say that if you’re honestly proud of the end product, then that story is good, and your readers will see that. What is your writing process like? First I get an idea, or I like to call it, “it appeared to me in a vision,” then I outline it (if the idea lingers in my brain), and then I start writing and editing. Sometimes I’d sprint with my fellow writers on a server I’m in, and other times, I’d put on music and just let my brain go wild. Most of the time, I’m sprinting with friends.
Would you ever repurpose a fic into a completely original story? If I had the time, probably. I can see my Royal!AU series becoming an original story with different characters and an expanded plotline. What tropes do you love, and what tropes can’t you stand? I am a sucker for F2L I (friends to lovers)! I just love the idea of dating someone who’s your best friend, so why not date your best friend, if the feelings are mutual of course! As for tropes, I dislike, I can’t say that I have any. I think it’s because (and I feel so bad for this), I don’t really read much stories other than what my mutual friends have written.
How much would you say audience feedback/engagement means to you? It means the world to me because I do like knowing if I’m doing something right or if I need to go back and edit something for clarity. Mainly, I get likes and reblogs (with no feedback), and while it’s still nice of someone for taking the time to like and reblog something, I would like some feedback, please. I’m still grateful no matter what, though!
What has been one of the biggest factors of your success (of any size)? I think it’s the support of my amazing group of friends/mutuals! It’s thanks to their support that my work is reaching a wider audience, and it just means the world to me that they read my blood, sweat, and tears. I love them so much, especially my close friend, Jey (softjeon on Tumblr)!
Coffee or tea? What are you ordering? For coffee, my go-to is a Caramel Macchiato with Soy Milk (from Starbucks), but lately I’ve been using my Keurig, so I just Peppermint Mocha and 3 tsps of Sugar (I can’t stand bitter coffee lol). For tea, I really like Mango green tea from Gongcha (another boba place chain).
Dream job (whether you have a job or not)? My dream job is to be an elementary school teacher, however, I am currently working on becoming a social worker where my population will still focus on children/students. So, it’s a good compromise!
If you could have one superpower, what would you choose?  If I could have one superpower, it would be cryokinesis aka ice manipulation!
If you could visit a historical era, which would you choose? Oh, that’s a tough one, but if I had to choose one, I would go for the 1960s so I can see the Beatles live!
If you could restart your life, knowing what you do now, would you? No, because it’s thanks to those life lessons that I grow up to be who I currently am. Sometimes you have to go through those harsh experiences to be a better version of yourself!
Would you rather fight 100 chicken-sized horses or one horse-sized chicken? One horse-sized chicken, then I can feed my family for months.
If you were a trope in a teen high school movie, what would you have been? Oh, hands down, I would be the stereotypical geek/nerd. Though, I was called a “preppy” in 9th grade, so that was a first.
Do you believe in aliens/supernatural creatures? Yup, especially ghosts!
Fun fact about yourself that not everyone would know? I can say the alphabet backwards!
Do you think fanfic writers get unfairly judged? Oh, hands down, especially when it comes to writing smut. I’ve seen other blogs condemn writers who write smut about real people, but my thing is that these idols are merely face claims for a character that the author is writing about.
Do you think art can be a medium for change? I think so! Every artist has a voice, especially with what’s going on recently, we need to be able to use our voices to spread light on certain issues.
Do you ever feel there are times when you’re writing for others, rather than yourself? I used to think that way, especially when it came to writing x reader inserts since I know that’s what “sells” to the Tumblr audience. Now, I’m perfectly happy with writing x OC stories, and I’m content with my stories getting at least 5 notes. If it breaks 10 notes, then that’s a success!
Do you ever feel like people have misunderstood you or your writing at times? If they did, then I wouldn’t know. Most of the time, I think my writing is okay with people.
Do your offline friends/loved ones know you write for Tumblr? Yes, my soul friend managed my old blog once upon a time and actually read one of my smuts. I was so embarrassed! But at least he said it was tastefully written, so that’s a bonus?
What is one thing you wish you could tell your followers? Always remember that it is okay to take breaks/go on hiatus!
Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who might be too scared to put themselves out there? My advice to those who want to start writing but are too afraid put themselves out there is to simply go for it. I was that person who was afraid to put their writing out there for the world to see, especially with some already established BTS writers on Tumblr, but I went for it. At first, it might be discouraging but know that your mutuals/friends will always be your number one supporter! Use their support as a motivator to keep writing and finding your groove! Then, eventually, all of your readers will start trickling in and showering you with the love and support you deserve!
Are there any times when you regret joining Tumblr? I wouldn’t say regret joining but more like allowing my life to be revolved around it. At one point in my life, it felt like a second job/chore for me, and Tumblr should never be that type of site!
Do you have any mutuals who have been particularly formative/supportive in your Tumblr journey? Oh, I have so many! The ones that come to mind are definitely Jey (softjeon), Beanie (jinned), Nina (j-sope), Kenz (parksfilter), Renae (mygsii), Atlas (astraljoon), & Niah (randomkoalablog) to name a few! I love these amazing people so much and cherish their friendship to the moon and back!
Pick a quote to end your interview with: "Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious … and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." - Walt Disney

What were you like at 17? Gah, that feels like a lifetime ago... I can barely remember. In a couple years I’ll be twice that age D: Sigh. Anyway, at that time I was a senior in high school. I had a few friends. I was shy and awkward (that hasn’t changed at all). I was a hardworking student. I had ambitions back then (that’s definitely changed). I had my issues, but not at all like these past few years. I was doing fine back then.
Tell us about your first kiss. It was behind my high school’s drama department with my boyfriend at the time. It was unexpected and awkward, but I was just so giddy about having had my first kiss haha. I remember calling my cousin who I was super close with at the time to freak out about it with and wrote all about it in my journal lol.
Tell us about your worst date. I haven’t had many dates, but none of the dates I have been on were bad.
What’s your biggest flaw? My negative self-talk and being my own worst enemy, my negativity, holding myself back, my stubbornness, self-neglect, being a complete mess of a person...
What’s the coolest thing you’ve bought lately? There’s this website called, “The Magic Candle Company”, which sells Disneyland and Disney World themed scented candles, hand sanitizer and hand soap, wax melts, and room sprays, and I bought a couple room sprays and hand sanitizers of my favorite Disneyland scents. I thought that was pretty cool.
Who is your celebrity crush? Alexander Skarsgard if you ya’ll didn’t know that by now.
What is your biggest pet peeve? people who like to talk just to hear their own annoying-ass voices. <<< lol that made me laugh.
What’s the song you most wish you had written? I don’t wish I had written any song.
What do you always take with you when you travel? The necessities like clothes, toiletries, medicine, wallet, some of the medical supplies I need, phone, usually my laptop, chargers, hand sanitizer... and now would also require the addition of masks. I haven’t travelled since the pandemic hit, but that would definitely be a necessity. And disinfectant spray and wipes. I feel like that’s just going to part of the norm going forward even if we get things under control.
Do you have any pets? Yep, I have my adorable doggo, Princess Leia. <33
Have you or someone you know ever drunk dialed? Yeah. What is the worst break up you have experienced? Honestly, the thing that came to mind first wasn’t even really a breakup at all because we never dated, but losing him felt like one and the heartbreak was real. I really fell for Ty. He said he liked me, too. Things felt so different with him. Like, I honestly thought something would happen between us. I was able to see us together for the long-term. The connection we had was different than anything I had before. My parents absolutely loved him and definitely thought something would come of us. He was the sweetest, caring, most genuine guy I ever knew. Gahhhh, he was a good one, ya’ll. He really was.
Have you ever been stuck by someone very annoying on a plane/bus/etc? Yes. Not fun.
When was the last time you were rejected by someone? A few years ago.
Has someone way older than you tried to hit on you? Yes. He was twice my age and the worst part was he thought I was 17 (I was in my early 20s).
Have you ever been cheated on? No. I hated that Joseph hooked up with his ex a few times while we had our thing going on between us, but we weren’t dating so he wasn’t actually cheating. We were talking, though, and had something going on. He knew how I felt about him. And for whatever reason, he didn’t want me to know he was doing that and he felt guilty about it.
Did you get lost at all on your first day of high school? I remember getting turned around and not being able to find one of my classes and ended up being slightly late. It was the first day, so it wasn’t a big deal, but still. I even went before school started to mentally map out my route and make sure I knew where I was going so I could avoid that. I was so nervous my first day of high school.
Have you ever been interrupted during sex? --
Have you ever been recorded doing stupid things while drunk? One of my friends and I would make stupid videos on our phones cause we thought we were funny, ha.
Has a significant other ever called you by the wrong name? No.
Have you ever cooked anything and it turned out horrible? Yeah, I’ve attempted baking certain things before and they didn’t come out right. I’m just so not a cook.
What is the worst birthday you have ever had? I haven’t had a bad birthday.
Have you ever choked on chewing gum? I don’t think so.
Have you ever found anything dirty in a siblings room? No, but I also don’t go looking around through his things.
Have you ever made a bad first impression on someones parents? Parents always seemed to love me.
When is the last time you got into a fist fight? I’ve never been in a physical fight.
Have you ever been spit on by a llama? Uh, no. Thankfully.
Have you ever locked yourself out of your car/house? I’ve forgotten my keys before and was locked out of the house. Thankfully, I live by a lot of fast food places and just went somewhere to eat while I waited for someone to get home, ha.
Describe how you got one of your scars. Spinal surgery.
Describe how you’ve broken a bone, if you have. I’m a paraplegic and don’t have any feeling in my legs, and they’re fragile from not being used, so as a kid I managed to break a bone in my leg once.
Have you ever had a near death experience? Yes.
When you get cold at home, do you get a sweater/hoodie or get a blanket? It depends. Sometimes both.
Do you require visual assistance? (i.e.; glasses or contacts) Yeah, I wear glasses.
Do you work out? No.
Describe the last cup you drank from. I’m currently drinking my venti peppermint white chocolate mocha with soy from Starbucks. Yum.
What is a food that you always are in the mood to eat? Ramen.
Do you like sausage? I used to, but I stopped eating it because it’s usually spicy and I can’t have spicy food anymore. I went from being obsessed with spicy food and could handle a decent amount of spice to now not even being able to eat something like sausage, which I never would have considered remotely spicy before.
Ever held a newborn animal? Aww, no.
Do you make a wish when you blow out your birthday candles? Not anymore. I don’t even bother with the candles anymore.
Have you ever been to Boston? No.
Describe your hair at the moment. It’s up in a messy bun as usual.
What is the last thing you searched for online? Something relating to a question in a survey yesterday.
What are you sitting on? My bed.
Could you use a massage right now? No. I’ve actually never had a massage before.
Is it wicked hard for you to sleep when its hot in your room? Oh, no sleep is happening if I’m hot.
Do you sleep on your stomach/back/side most often? I sleep slightly turned to my left side. I can’t sleep completely on my back.
Do make sure you dot your I`s when you write? Yeah.
Do you dunk your cookies in milk? Yeah. Or coffee.
What did you wear today? I’m wearing leggings and a long sleeve shirt.
Do medical terms make you uncomfortable? If I don’t know what it means. And even the simplest things sound scary in medical terms.
Are you afraid of failure? I feel like a failure already and I’m afraid of always being one.
Have you been called a bad influence? No.
What about Chinese food? Love it or hate it? I like some Chinese food.
How do you feel about getting new neighbors? I don’t care unless they’re loud and annoying, which we’ve had to deal with in the past. Why were you last in a hospital? I had surgery back in 2012.
When is the last time you went to a doctor, and why? Last month to get my pain medication refilled. You have to see the doctor in order to get medication like that cause of the super strict regulations on them. It’s a big pain, no pun intended.

13 Tips For Making Your Semester Just a bit Easier
Why hello there. I'm a graduate, which is super scary to say. I also am a perpetual student and as someone with mental illnesses, school can be hard. I mean, it's hard for a lot of reasons, lets be real. It can also be a wonderful experience. Below, I've listed 13 of my personal methods of helping my year be just a bit easier. Will they work for you? Maybe. I can't possibly know that, only you can. Bear that in mind. If you know something wouldn't work for you, ignore it. There's no harm in that. :)
Read the effing syllabus
No lie. Every single class I had at my last university had a quiz on the syllabus during the first week. They’re incredibly important because they typically have a calendar of assignments, tell you when you’re going to be doing things, give you policy information, have a grading breakdown, and have all of the required materials, not to mention your class and professor information.
Plan your semester
After you get all your syllabi, make a master calendar. I got one of the monthly calendars from the target dollar spot, or really anywhere like amazon, staples, office depot, etsy, target, etc. I personally used bullet journaling and created my own planner. I went over the top and color coded the classes, but you can simply put the class and the assignment on the date it’s due. This helps make sure you always know what’s coming and aren’t blind sighted when it comes due. You don’t even have to do it in a paper planner. One of my classmates scheduled reminders on her iPhone on the due dates. She said it took forever, but she liked it.
seek out accommodations
This may not be as obvious, but is tremendously important. my second semester I was taking six classes in the same department and just all happened to have projects due around the same time. I was having an incredibly hard time keeping up because I have severe anxiety and would become overwhelmed incredibly easily. I couldn’t take any less classes because my major courses were on cycles and that was the only time they were offered and I had a specific time frame to finish, so don’t start with that. My point is that when I realized that it was becoming an issue, I spoke to my school’s disability services and received accommodations from my professors. It’s contractual, and they cannot ask what the disability is, and they’re required to uphold whatever you and they agree on. I was allowed more free absences than the “unpenalized” ones, and a leniency with due dates, provided I let the prof know what was going on, generally. I always said that I was having a “flare up” because that’s not violating my privacy, but still allowed the prof to understand that I was having an issue. Most schools don’t require formal documentation from a doctor, but I had it, so I provided it. Some even are very lenient, and will have the on campus health services help you out too.
don’t be afraid of being less than perfect
I went into school telling myself that I was going to be on the deans list, have a 4.0, and have all of the regalia when I graduated. That didn’t happen. What did happen was that I had 95 units in five semesters. Yes, that averages 19 a semester, but the way I did it was hell. First semester I had 5 classes- 18 units, second semester I had 5 classes, band, and lessons - 21 units, the six week summer I had 4 classes, one of which was a one on one which I will talk about later - 15 units, my last fall semester was 6 classes and band - 23 units, and my final semester was 5 classes and band - 18 units. Needless to say there was no way I was getting that 4.0. What did happen was I joined an honor society, was on the editing staff for the literary journal, got two articles published in the school paper, was on the executive board for a national club, and commuted 45 minutes each way, every day and sometimes weekends, for two and a half years, and ended up with a 3.2. Not only that but I had regalia for my honor society and my club, and I set a precedent for future students and got an award at the end of year honor’s banquet. I don’t think that I did too shabby, and I don’t regret not getting that 4.0.
apparel matters but not how you think
We all know that the brain is weird. For instance, if I throw on leggings and a tee immediately when I wake up, my brain is in chill mode. This is why I rarely wore loungy clothes to school. I even dressed up on Fridays, calling it fancy Friday because I love alliterations. This tactic might help you stay in the correct brain space, or not. I don’t know how your brain works. I do know that someone looked into the relationship between clothes and mood, so it can't all be rubbish.
go to office hours
So many times I heard people complain because they don’t understand something, or that the prof is being too hard on them or other things, but there’s one thing that can help with that. Go to office hours. Your profs set them up for a reason. That’s where you can get help with assignments, clarification on things, or help in other academic things. They won’t bite you I promise. You may even grow an amazing academic relationship with them. My advisor was one of my profs. She is a very intimidating woman in the classroom but a completely different prof in her office. In speaking to her about my graduation plans and needs and such she did the amazing thing of teaching me a one on one, honors, independent study, of one of the classes that she teaches that was out of cycle, so that I would be able to graduate on time. Granted, cramming an entire semester of books to read into six weeks of once a week sessions was INSANE, but it was one of my favorite classes, and an amazing thing that she did for me.
take advantage of free things
Free things are literally the best, amirite? Go to the events because they typically have free food. My school, around midterms and finals had free test taking kits with pencils and test booklets. I believe that there were a ton of free events and things for residents, but I lived off campus and commuted a long time, so I rarely did things. I did however, get a free shirt at nearly every event I went to, and got a sweet tumbler just before I graduated.
seek out associations and clubs
I am a(n inactive) member of the Phi Alpha Theta honor society because of my grades in my history courses and an alumnae of the Kappa Phi Club which is a national Christian sisterhood similar to traditional Greek life, but founded on different ideals and values. -I could go on and on about Kappa Phi, so don't get me started. :)- Both of these organizations can be started at your school if they aren't already available. By seeking out associations and clubs and the like, there are innumerable opportunities for you. As a member of PAT I have scholarship opportunities for grad school and Kappa Phi has given me amazing friendships to women across the country and will grant me leadership opportunities in the future.
don't be afraid to talk to professors like they’re real people
News flash: they are. They have feelings. I adopted a kitten from one of my profs, and I’ve babysat his children. I formed a close enough friendship with a different prof to be able to write his end of semester evaluation in emojis, which ended up in his tenure package. With forming relationships with your profs, they are able to know more about who you are and will be able to write you amazing letters of recommendation in the future.
mental health days are important
As part of my accommodations, I was given a leniency with attendance and I was able to take mental health days. I didn’t take a lot, maybe on average three a semester, but they helped me so much that if I hadn’t taken them, I would have fallen behind in my work. Your mental health is so important in school. Please don’t mentally drain yourself so that you can achieve “perfection.”
do more early on in the semester
This may seem like a silly thing, but it helps in the long run. After you go through your syllabus, take a look at things that look like they’re easy to do, or wouldn’t take long and do them the first couple weeks. Sometimes, if it’s an online submission, you can even submit it early and not have to deal with it. I did that for one of my senior projects and was incredibly happy that I did. While all of my classmates were struggling or hadn’t even started the couple weeks before it was due, I had mine finished and was just waiting to turn it in. That took the load from 5 senior projects to do to 4, and with them all due the same week it was a tremendous help.
be aware of your spending
$4 here and there at the coffee shop or quick mart on your campus may seem like nothing, but it adds up. I realized one semester that I had spent nearly $100 in one month just on coffee, which I could easily make at home, so that’s what I did. I made coffee at home and sometimes lunch and was able to keep better track on my spending.
noms are important
Sometimes it’s hard to make the cafeteria hours for meals, especially if you’re an athlete with practice during the meal times. This is why snacks are super important, or quick meals that you can make at home or in your dorm. During the summer my class started before the coffee shop opened so I couldn’t grab food there, so I started making overnight oats. I took a mason jar and filled it about half way with dry quick oatmeal, put other things (my fave was peanut butter and jelly) inside it and filled it the rest of the way with almond milk or soy milk because ya girl can’t have dairy, then put the lid on and popped it in the fridge before bed, and in the morning I had breakfast to eat in class.
There you have it. Easy peasy, right? Duh. I hope something here helped you, and if it did, let me know. If you have any to add, also let me know. I wish you the best of luck with your semester and the rest of your year!

I love when it gets cold out, so I can cuddle up on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa. I love 50’s pinup style.
I really don’t like talking on the phone, I’d much rather just text the person. I wish I had that one friend that I could tell everything to.
I don’t feel like going to a bar is my kind of thing, I’d much rather just hang out with a few friends at home.
I dislike some foods, not because of the flavor, but because of the texture, or how it looks.
I get sunburnt fairly easily. I love giving and getting surprises. I’ve been spending a lot of time away from home lately.
I don’t really enjoy muffins, they are so dry!
I don’t really like sour foods or candy.

Clumsy Cause I'm Falling In Love
This is my gift for @artisticautistic for the @bnhasummerexchange!! (I couldn’t fit in a lot of krbk but it’s kinda there lol) Enjoy!
Read on AO3
There are times when Midoriya Izuku wishes he could be more like Uraraka Ochako.
Uraraka isn’t shy like Izuku is. When anyone comes into the Kamui Wood Cafe, she’s there to greet them by name if she knows it and with a smile if she doesn’t. She strikes up conversations at the counter and never fails to make people smile.
Izuku just makes the drinks and remains, as always, too nervous to talk to anyone without becoming a stuttering mess.
It's eight o’clock on a normal Thursday night. The busiest part of the evening is over, even though there's another hour until closing. There are a few people at tables across the cafe, laptops out and coffee cups too large for the time of night already half-empty. It's quiet - the chatty people have all left by now and the only people here are the students who have papers due tomorrow.
Uraraka’s chatting with the guy sitting at the table closest to the counter. Apparently, they're in the same calculus class.
Iida’s wiping down the empty tables with almost automatic motions. He moves from one table to the next in seconds, spraying down the table with one hand and wiping it dry with a paper towel with the other.
And Izuku’s putting the finishing touches on a latte behind the counter. He's not good at latte art by any stretch, but he can make a pretty flower at the very least, and that's what he adds to every for-here order.
“Small latte with soy milk, for here!” He calls, sliding the mug down to the end of the counter.
Someone comes up to take the mug with a thank you and a smile. Uraraka probably knows her name, but Izuku doesn't, so he just smiles back and hopes it isn't awkward.
“Hey, Deku!” Uraraka calls from the register. “I'm going to put my music on, can you man the counter if anyone comes in?”
“Y-yeah, I think so!” Izuku calls back, sliding down the counter as Uraraka heads over to the speaker in the corner, phone in hand.
“Wait, are you changing the music?” Iida asks.
“Yes, your smooth jazz is putting me to sleep!” Uraraka laughs. “We still have another hour until closing, I can't last that long!”
“I have other music-”
“Like what?”
As if on cue, the jazz fades into silence and the opening riff of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” blasts through the cafe.
“Oh.” Uraraka nods, trying to hold back a giggle. “I see.”
The bell over the door jingles, catching Izuku’s attention. Uraraka’s been away from the counter for thirty seconds, obviously his luck is just bad enough to have someone walk in-
The man walking into the cafe is, to put it bluntly, really really pretty. Izuku has no idea how someone wearing something as plain as black Converse high-tops could look that pretty. He wears black Converse high-tops sometimes and there's no way he could ever look that pretty. Maybe it's the fact that the man’s wearing all black while looking more elegant than emo. That's probably due to the shoes and the black bomber jacket.
But that just makes Izuku notice his hair - red on the left, white on the right, neatly parted down the middle. And his face - there’s a scar over his left eye, but other than that, his skin is smooth and bright. And his eyes - the left blue, the right brown, both colors bold in a way that draws Izuku in like quicksand. And everything else about him.
God, he’s beautiful.
“Hi, welcome to Kamui Wood!” Uraraka shouts from next to the speaker, shooting Izuku a look.
The man nods and walks up to the counter and oh god why does Izuku have to be manning the counter now?
“H-hi, welcome to Kamui Wood, w-what can I get started for you today?” Izuku tries and fails to keep his composure.
“Um, hi.” The man frowns - oh no he thinks Izuku’s weird and they’re going to lose a customer and it’s all his fault - and looks up at the options up on the chalkboard on the back wall. “Can I get a medium mocha?”
“Okay.” Izuku nods, watching Uraraka get back behind the counter out of the corner of his eye. “D-do you want milk or dark chocolate?”
The man pauses in thought. “...Dark.”
“And f-for here or to go?” Izuku asks.
“To go.”
Uraraka whispers something excitedly under her breath, but Izuku has no idea what or why.
“All right, we’ll whip that r-right up!” Izuku grabs a to-go cup and writes down the order, handing the cup to Uraraka.
The man goes to sit down at one of the tables and another customer comes in. The next order is a lot easier for Izuku to take.
“Medium mocha, dark chocolate, to go!” Uraraka singsongs, sliding the drink along the counter. There’s a black Sharpie in her hair that almost falls out as she talks, but she’s clearly trying to keep it hidden.
The man picks it up, looking at the cup with a frown before he turns on his heel and leaves the shop, bell jingling over the door as it slams shut.
Izuku doesn’t make much of it, finishing his shift without much trouble. He helps everyone close up, a little after nine when all the customers have left, and when the doors are locked, he walks home with Uraraka just like he usually does. They both exchange “See you tomorrow”s with Iida as he walks the other way down the sidewalk.
Uraraka has a spring in her step and a smile on her face that she’s obviously trying to hide. She’s seemed happy ever since she made that mocha, and Izuku has no idea why.
“Are you all right?” Izuku asks.
“Fine!” Uraraka flashes him a thumbs-up. “Just glad to be done, that’s all!”
Izuku has the weirdest feeling that she’s lying about that. “You know, you shouldn’t have caffeine so late, you aren’t going to sleep well.”
“It’s not caffeine, Deku!”
“Then what is it?”
“Don’t worry about it!” Uraraka laughs. “Really, if anyone needs caffeine right now, it’s you. Don’t you have a paper due tomorrow?”
“Yeah, but-”
“Did you finish it already?” Uraraka asks, eyes wide.
“No!” Izuku chuckles. “Definitely not. But I’ve outlined the whole thing, I just need to write it.”
“That’s good.”
“Yeah.”
They walk in silence a little longer in the dark, barely encountering anyone on the street. The walk back to their dorm from the cafe isn’t a long one, but it always seems longer when there isn’t anyone around.
When they get inside, they take the stairs instead of the elevator, since Izuku’s room is on the second floor and Uraraka’s is on the third. It’s one more push after standing up for four hours, but it’s doable.
“Well, goodnight!” Uraraka grins. “Good luck on that paper!”
“Thanks.” Izuku smiles back. “See you tomorrow!”
“See you!”
Uraraka heads up the stairs as Izuku walks down the second-floor hallway to his room. He unlocks the door and puts his bag down on his bed before sitting next to it, leaning back against the wall.
He takes his phone out of the front pocket of his backpack for the first time in four hours. There are three texts waiting for him, each one given its own separate blurb on his lockscreen.
The oldest unread message is one from his roommate, Kirishima, who’s on a study date - knowing him, there’s a lot more emphasis on date. The next one is from someone in his chemistry class, asking him what he’s doing for the review.
The last text is from an unknown number, and his first thought is that it’s just spam or a wrong number. Around ninety percent of the time, that’s what it is.
But as soon as he opens the text, he knows this situation definitely falls into the other ten percent.
From: XXXXXXXXXX
9:04 PM
This number was written on my mocha at Kamui Wood, so I thought I’d say hello.
Izuku narrows his eyes at the text, trying to make sense of it, before he realizes what’s going on.
The Sharpie in Uraraka’s hair. The excitement in her voice when she yelled out the order. The smile she couldn’t shake when they were walking home.
Izuku screams into his pillow, extremely glad Kirishima isn’t home right now. He doesn’t know whether to be mad at Uraraka for embarrassing him or thankful for giving him the opportunity to talk to the man from the shop again.
What is he supposed to say? “Hi nice to meet you”? “Well this is awkward”? “I think my friend’s trying to set us up I’m so so so so sorry”? This guy probably doesn’t even know whose number he has. For all he knows, he might think he’s texting Uraraka right now.
Izuku groans. He has to at least sort that out.
To: XXXXXXXXXX
9:17 PM
Yeah hi!
He hits send before he can say anything else he’ll regret. He’s walking on thin ice right now and he knows it; any wrong move could ruin everything. He’ll introduce himself when it feels right.
His phone buzzes and he jumps.
From: XXXXXXXXXX
9:18 PM
Were you at the register?
That was easy.
To: XXXXXXXXXX
9:18 PM
Yeah
Izuku realizes right after hitting send that the guy thinks he wrote his own number on the cup, even though he didn’t. What if he thinks he’s too bold or too obvious or too much? But he can’t clear that up without saying that he didn’t write the number himself but that would make him seem pathetic and why is Uraraka like this-
Another buzz.
From: XXXXXXXXXX
9:18 PM
Oh.
Izuku clutches the phone to his chest and lies back on the bed with a groan. What does that even mean? Is that a positive oh or a negative oh?
From: XXXXXXXXXX
9:19 PM
If you don’t mind, could we talk sometime tomorrow or the next day?
Izuku’s heart cannot handle any of this.
To: XXXXXXXXXX
9:19 PM
Totally, I’m working 5-9 tomorrow so you can stop by anytime!
Every four-hour shift, Izuku gets one fifteen-minute break. Is fifteen minutes enough to sort something like this out? He hopes it is.
From: XXXXXXXXXX
9:20 PM
Thank you.
Izuku still doesn’t know if that’s positive or negative or both or neither and his heart is racing at the speed of sound.
From: XXXXXXXXXX
9:21 PM
I’m Todoroki Shouto, by the way.
Izuku blinks. As stupid as it sounds, he didn't think Todoroki could have a name. Don't angels have names that can't be spoken in human tongues or something like that?
He's briefly tempted to slap himself in the face. This is real, it's happening, and he needs to get a grip if he doesn't want to ruin this chance.
To: XXXXXXXXXX
9:21 PM
I'm  Midoriya Izuku, nice to meet you!!
He drops his phone onto the other end of the bed and brings his knees to his chest. Does he have a date tomorrow? Does that count as a date? Todoroki said he wanted to talk, what does that mean?
When Kirishima gets back, Izuku still hasn't worked on the paper.
“How are you?” Uraraka asks on the way to work the next day, like nothing’s wrong.
“Fine,” Izuku answers.
“Did you finish that history paper?”
“Yeah.” Izuku stayed up until three in the morning to finish it, but that counts.
“That's good.” Uraraka smiles. “Anything interesting happen last night?”
Izuku freezes in his tracks. “I don't know, you tell me.”
“Wait, did he actually call you?” Uraraka stops, too, eyes wide. “I didn't-”
“He texted me,” Izuku says, “He said he wanted to talk-”
“What, when?” Uraraka grins. “Does this mean you have a date?”
“I don't know, I'll find out tonight.” Izuku’s already freaking out and he hasn't even gotten to work yet. He's going to have to take the register the whole time because if he doesn't, he's definitely going to spill hot coffee on himself.
“Do you need a pep talk?” Uraraka asks. “If you don't want one from me, I can ask Iida to give you one, he's good at those.”
Izuku sighs. “I have no idea.”
“Sorry for springing this on you.” Uraraka’s smile turns sheepish and a little ashamed. “I thought it would help you get off on the right foot, but now you're nervous and-”
“It's fine.” Izuku gives her a smile in return. He definitely didn't have the guts to do what she did, but there was definitely a part of him that wanted to. And thanks to her, here he is. He's just scared. Really, really scared.
Uraraka gets to the shop first and rubs away the condensation on the window to get a look inside. “Iida’s in there, I'll ask him to give you some encouragement. Come on!”
Before Izuku can protest, Uraraka’s already dragging him into Kamui Wood with a strength no one except him and the people in her weight training class know she possesses. Of course she would take weight training for her required physical education elective. Of course.
“Iida!” She shouts, dragging Izuku back behind the counter toward the break room. “Deku’s going to talk to his crush tonight, so when he gets his stuff on, can you tell him he's going to do great?”
“...I'll try.” Iida nods, slightly confused but determined.
“Did you really have to reveal all that here?” Izuku hisses. Iida’s not the only person behind the counter, Jirou’s here and so is-
“Wait, Midoriya, you have a crush?” Kaminari leans over toward him with a grin, still measuring out some milk for a drink. “I didn't know that!” He turns to Jirou and asks, “Did you know that?”
Jirou shakes her head. “You talk to him more than I do.”
“Who is it?” Kaminari asks, always the local gossip. “Are they coming here?”
“Can it, you're just freaking him out more.” Jirou gives Izuku a little smile. “Don't worry about it, you got this.”
“Thank you!” Izuku runs back toward the break room to clock in, put his backpack down, and slip on the standard apron, running into Kaminari and Jirou on the way out, both clocking out right at five. He heads to the register and takes his first order of the night, but not before Kaminari obnoxiously yells “Good luck!” as he walks out.
“I was asked to give you some encouragement,” Iida says in between orders, his voice noticeably calmer than both Kaminari’s and Uraraka’s. “Would you still like it?”
“Sure.” Izuku nods. “Fire away.”
“It's just a conversation,” Iida says, “You have plenty of experience with those.”
“Yeah, you took his order just fine yesterday!” Uraraka adds, “You didn't explode then, and you won't now!”
“You're also a generally likeable person, and for good reason,” Iida continues, “You managed to set this up-”
“And that means he at least kind of likes you!” Uraraka interrupts, “You're going to be fine, right, Iida?”
“Right.”
“Thank, guys.” Izuku fiddles with his hands and looks right at the door, just waiting for the bell to jingle and for Todoroki to walk in and for this to happen so it can be over and he doesn't have to freak out about it anymore.
When the bell rings, it's the only thing Izuku can hear.
Todoroki looks just as good today as he did yesterday, which shouldn't be a surprise but definitely still is. But there's something different about him today, and Izuku has no idea what it is.
“Want me to take over the register?” Uraraka whispers.
“Yeah,” Izuku whispers back.
Todoroki catches his eye and starts walking up to the counter and oh god this is actually happening-
“H-hi, Todoroki!” Izuku squeaks out.
“...Hi.” Todoroki frowns. “Is everything all right?”
“Yeah, totally!” Izuku nods erratically, stepping out behind the counter. “Back here.”
He doesn't even wait for Todoroki to follow him before he's walking back to the break room, heart racing in his chest. He's never been this nervous, this is all just moving so fast.
“I'm sorry,” he says as soon as the door is shut behind the two of them.
“For what?” Todoroki narrows his eyes in confusion. ”I was the one who asked.”
“No, it's not that, my-” Izuku sighs. “My friend wrote my number on the cup, she’s... like that sometimes.”
“So you don't-”
“Nonono, I just needed you to know before- before anything else happens.” Izuku is truly incredible at this why is he so nervous-
“Right.” Todoroki slowly nods. “About that.”
“Yeah?” This is the part where Izuku gets a no, he can just feel it-
“How does this weekend sound?” Todoroki’s cheeks are redder than they've ever been, and it might just be the room temperature but he definitely isn't cool and collected anymore.
Wait. “Like a date?”
“...Yes.”
Izuku doesn't know what to say. He could faint. How did this happen? “...Yeah, sure.”
“That was... simple,” Todoroki says.
“Yeah, really!” Izuku laughs. “Sorry this room is so stuffy, this was probably a lot more awkward than it needed to be.”
Todoroki shrugs. “It happened.” He's the first one to go for the door again, turning around with his hand on the knob. “I'll text you.”
“O-okay!” Izuku bobs his head up and down as blood rushes to his cheeks. How did he do that?
Things are easier when he gets back to the counter. Uraraka and Iida switch off register duty, and Izuku’s never realized the therapeutic potential of just making drinks for three hours. Iida’s phone is plugged into the speaker again, playing the same classic rock and smooth jazz as yesterday, and it's hard to believe it's only been one day since “Walk This Way”. But plenty has changed since then.
There are times when Midoriya Izuku wishes he could be more like Uraraka Ochako, but most of the time, having her around is enough for him.
