my turn to cry - thoughts on 3-1b
ok this has actually gotta be my favorite chapter cause holy shit so much stuff happened.
I played the Alice/kanna route and afterwards I watched a vod with the reko/shin route in which ranmaru and naomichi died before the banquet, so BIG SPOILER WARNING FOR BOTH ROUTES
Mafia Princess Sara??: Ok so first off, back in the beginning of 2020, I had a theory that Sara was a mafia heiress and that the death game was supposed to be something to “prepare” her. And that her memories were wiped or she was initially supposed to be kept blind to this whole thing (In 3-1a when everybody saw the consent form for the very first time everybody felt a sense of deja vu, except for Sara. Because why would they need her consent when she is the sole focus of the game and it’s all for her) This theory was mainly supplied by my confusion surrounding the hiring of Kai, cause why would mr Chidouin hire a former assassin to protect her?? How did he even know Kai??? But yeah, the whole thing with Shinobu Gokujo and deciding a new don through a death game just adds a lil more validity to this theory.
Sara’s real father: I also had a mini theory that Gashu Satou was her real father, but that was mostly cause of their hair color and how it would def make Sara’s hair color make more sense genetics-wise (but kai has black hair, so its most likely that his mother had black hair, which would also disprove this mini-theory but yk im not here to prove it just talk about it). And that Gashu knew of Mr. Chidouin and gave Sara to him, and it would also explain why mr Chidouin chose Kai of all people to look after her and why Kai could only watch her from a distance, in case she realized the truth that he was her brother/half-brother or something.
GREENBLINGS CANON AAAAAAAA: I love this, I love this so much oh my god. Now I can replay and cry after 2-2 cause nankidai hates us :’). I dont have an issue with this specifically, I’m just a bit bothered by how the whole thing went. There was some buildup yea, and the cg with kanna, kugie, and shin was amazing. And that lil bit about nice hallucinations made me tear up a bit. But, then everybody kinda just moved on? and idk this whole chapter was a fuckign roller coaster I could barely keep up.
Autistic Gin <3: I’m autistic myself and I have seen many characters who are autistic-coded or exhibit many signs of autism but have never been straight up confirmed (Ex: Vera Misham from Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney). And even then, these characters usually share similar personality traits like being aloof and reserved. So it’s nice to see that Gin is representing autism in a relatively realistic manner with his hyperfixations, vocal tics, and issues with socializing. Even after nearly dying like 17 times he’s still doing well and I genuinely wish for his survival and happiness.
Ranmaru’s death: Both of Ranmaru’s deaths, (if you or if you don’t fail the electricity absorption minigame) the death feels so... off? I was really attached to him as a character, yet his death didn’t impact as much as Joe’s or Nao’s did. During his Banquet death, one second he had his really cute smiling sprite but then whoops oh no guys weird drill screw thing kills him (again). I still can barely comprehend it because it all just happened so fast. Like no cg or anything. I was honestly kinda disappointed. The “delayed” one does a better job at his death scene, but again, it was wayyy too quick and completely dismissed as everybody just moves on to defeat Maple 2.0. I at least would’ve appreciated a better transition than Midori just saying “well anyways–”
Ranmaru’s extremely quick descent into madness in the shin route: I actually liked this idea of Ranmaru willing to go to such extremes for Sara. However, theres barely time for any of this to develop? Like again, everything just happens so fast??? I would've definitely liked if there were little hints around before the body discovery that ranmaru was gonna do something like this, just a little time for development would really be cool.
Mr. Policeman/Mr. Tazuna???: After I finished, I actually looked on the wiki to see if it said anything about his son that he mentioned and I found this:

The thing about Q-taro: I’m gonna say it now, I’ve liked Q-taro ever since the aftermath of 1-2, and Q-taro haters have added absolutely nothing to this fandom. Everybody saw him as a child-hater, I see him as a guy who’ll do anything to survive and succeed. I mean that wish is kinda what got him into the death game. And yeah he did try to leave that one time, but that’s what getting thrown into traumatic killing games does for you, most people don’t want to die, they want to live, no matter what it takes. We can’t all be the main character and choose to cooperate with everybody and be the “good” person in that situation. Even Sara has those extremely selfish moments and those intrusive thoughts of winning and leaving.
This whole thing should also be applied to Ranmaru. Ranmaru has gone through so much shit in such a brief amount of time, to the point where he was considering to/actually kill people to escape with the one person he trusted in this hellhole. In that situation, Sara’s kinda at fault here, cause without Joe she’s lost her sense of morality which resulted in her becoming selfish and well... honestly kinda toxic. This emotional manipulation is really what set Ranmaru off, however it was 100% his decision to fucking kill somebody and murder’s bad. Still love him though.
But back to Qtaro, I really enjoyed the extra substance given to him in this chapter, it’s nice to see the development from being selfish to feeling deep remorse to protecting the dolls of the first trial victims, most notably Mai. As he completely forgives her for stabbing him. The chapter did a great job at fueling my already intense love for Q-taro (and it actually convinced my best friend who claims to hate Q-taro with every bone of her body to like him too!) I also love the father-son dynamic between him and Gin. I find this relationship to be really important cause Gin’s father is an abusive alcoholic and Q-taro’s an orphan who’s never had a proper role-model in his life. So it’s beautiful that despite not having anybody there for him when he was younger he can still be a good figure for another child.
Predictions/hopes for the next part:
I just want to see whether Shin already knew about Kanna being his sister, and if he doesn’t I want a reveal. Right. Now.

I want things to actually change depending on whether you picked Alice or reko, cause so far they’ve played extremely minor roles.

AceAro Miles Edgeworth’s Platonic Crush on Phoenix Wright Headcanons
Platonic crush: the desire to be platonically intimate with someone without romantic or sexual attraction. Intensity like any kind of crushes can vary.
In Childhood:
When they were children, Miles would often talk more about Phoenix than Larry, to the point that Ray Shields began teasing him about having a crush on Phoenix. And Miles would be like, “No?” because last time he checked he wasn’t experiencing that “heart stuff” that he sees in zany cartoons.
When they have to sit and rest somewhere, Miles would read a book with at least his knee touching Phoenix. Or if there was enough space, his back touching Phoenix’s side. No, Larry, it’s not a snuggle, now hush. (Similar to how a cat would lounge at their favorite owner’s side while casually not looking at them).
As much as he enjoyed them as the Signal Samurai trio, his favorite moments were just talking with Phoenix about anything under the sun -in the early hour before class or when they have dropped Larry home and it was just him and Phoenix.
He often looked forward to the quiet instances that Phoenix would hold his hand while they’re walking home alone since Phoenix is more at ease with affection than he was.
Some teenagers hollered at them for it and Phoenix let go, embarrassed, while Miles was wondering why he was embarrassed when they both know it was because they were good friends. So he just stubbornly grabbed his hand again and dragged him away from those immature buffoons.
Miles was neutral when it comes to Valentines Day. But when Phoenix received a box of chocolates from a girl he likes, Miles became more aloof and disinterested. He wondered why there was no celebration for friendship. Idle time was spent on thinking what gift he would give Phoenix if there was a proper day for celebrating best friends. (Larry is also his best friend but he doesn’t have the word that distinguishes his friendship with Larry and friendship with Phoenix.)
Miles was disappointed that he was unable to find the specific term between best friend and deeper best friend. Even his father doesn’t know. Gregory Edgeworth assured him he would find it someday.
Being someone who thinks ahead, Miles knew that someday Phoenix might not prioritize and value their friendship as much as he does once Phoenix would get a girlfriend. Miles tried very hard not to think of the time they would be in middle school.
After Gregory’s death, Miles never received Phoenix’s letters as von Karma wants to isolate him from his original home. Even when Miles appreciate the song request from Phoenix dedicated to him, von Karma made it clear that sentimental relations will distract him from perfection. Plus, Miles thought it was a one time and that Phoenix probably had a girlfriend to dedicate himself to by now.
In Adulthood (Platonic Crush to Queerplatonic Attraction to QP Love):
Early Career. When Miles received college Phoenix’s letters, his first reaction was confusion. Out-of-the-blue this ghost from the past was asking him why he was being called Demon Prosecutor. Second reaction was stonewalling. There was no point delving about how a person used to make him feel.
State vs Fey. After the trial, Miles told himself he developed an intellectual hyperfixation towards Phoenix Wright as he arranged his brand new custom chess set with the “spike-y” pawns. He was half-right. If only he wasn’t so entangled with von Karma’s opinions on “sentimental relations”.
State vs Powers. Miles’ platonic crush resurfaced somewhere after Will Powers’ case and Phoenix asking to defend him.
State vs Edgeworth. He faintly realized at the moment Phoenix had smiled at him in relief once Miles got acquitted, that Phoenix was someone he wanted in his life. If only Miles deserved so.
Miles would never admit he finds a unique sense of enjoyment in working with cases where Phoenix had to defend. He doubted if a lot of people experience intimacy in rivalry.
State vs Skye. Unfortunately, Miles have bigger things to deal with like coming into terms with a mentor that had both raised and twisted him, struggling to find a new norm as eyes watched him, his very story available to the public, then having to face the Skye case that made him question everything he was as a prosecutor.
It all became too much and he wasn’t thinking straight and one of those thoughts was that Phoenix was better off knowing a better person than him.
State vs Engarde. The belief was instilled when Phoenix got mad at him for faking his own death.
After having a talk and Miles realizing that cutting people off abruptly was more of a dick move than he thought, he and Phoenix kept in touch after.
In the space he had given himself in Europe, Miles decided that aside from becoming a better lawyer, he wanted to be the friend Phoenix deserved to have in his life, with the same intimacy they had in childhood that he still couldn’t name.
State vs Iris. Miles was pretty much neutral around Iris. If Phoenix would decide to rekindle his relationship with her (though the deception made him wrinkle his nose no matter how true Iris’ feelings were at that time), he wouldn’t care as long as he and Phoenix would still be in good terms as partners. Even if Phoenix would not put as much special connotations as he would in their partnership. That was all he could ask for after everything.
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. Whenever Kay would tease him about “that man”, Miles would just look at her dryly. At this point, he should know not a lot of people would understand.
7-year Disbarment. Phoenix’s disbarment drew them closer together after Miles’ was finally able to contact him when Phoenix shut everyone out. Miles couldn’t do much being in Europe but he does what he could from flying them to Europe so that Phoenix could help him with his cases to caring for Trucy.
Their commitment for each other only grew from raising Trucy together to righting Japanifornia’s legal system.
Miles wished he could kiss Phoenix on the forehead without making it weird. It just felt like Phoenix needed it. Comforting Phoenix with hugs and handholding, at least, was never questioned for romantic interest.
When Phoenix began to study for the bar again, Miles often enjoy Phoenix falling asleep on his shoulder. Unseen, Miles would smile before poking him awake.
He enjoys movie nights with the Wright family where Trucy and Phoenix would snuggle close and dinner/banter with Phoenix every week.
Fantasies of sleep-snuggling with the man he admires and trusts the most and has an intense emotional-intellectual connection? Of course, he does. “So near and yet so far” has never been so painful in that one time they have to share a bed.
After Phoenix got his badge back, Miles was pretty much satisfied. His life was more stable, inner and outer, than it had ever been. Phoenix and Trucy’s life were also stable. Miles now felt more confident and comfortable in their bond and Miles would do what it takes to keep it as a part of his life.
He may have felt a little thrill when they both become comfortable enough for Phoenix to be casually affectionate with his touch -an arm around his shoulder as they laugh about something, a hand on his arm when asking about a case- it felt like back in their more carefree childhood.
State vs Wyatt. Miles was pretty much ruffled with questions about marriage directed at him of all people. But if he has to marry someone, it might as well be someone he knew so well and trusts so much. Miles may have opted out some of his opinions in marriage but he was no longer the person who would lie to himself of who that someone would be.
He wanted... something. He wanted a sort of exclusivity with Phoenix. The idea of Phoenix dating other people made Miles realized he wasn’t the type to share. The revelation itself was frustrating when he was neutral or repulsed of varying degrees when it comes to different romantic and sexual acts.
With a combination of finally having the words to describe what he wanted in Google Search and help with his therapist, the name of what he wanted with Phoenix was a queerplatonic relationship with a compromise on whatever would be Phoenix’s romantic/sexual needs from him. If Phoenix would have him as so. And if Phoenix wouldn’t... well, their friendship had been through a lot of things, this one event wouldn’t change it much.
(This is from my own experiences and wants as someone in the acearo spectrum. I’m not the universal experience for acearo and it can be different for everyone else.)

Here’s a game that I’ve become extremely hyperfixated on recently, and something new for my dormant blog!
I originally liveblogged my playthrough of The Great Ace Attorney in a thread on a Discord server, with only one, later two, people there with me for it. But I feel like my experience of the game and the thoughts and speculations I had about it while playing through it for the first time were interesting enough that I figured, hey, why not share that liveblog to a wider audience? So, that’s what I’m going to be doing here: posting the Discord transcripts of my liveblog with some minor reformatting to make it easier to follow, in parts on a daily schedule until I’ve got through the whole thing.
Some background for this: I originally played/watched a fan translation of TGAA1 several years ago (having no idea the games would eventually get a proper localisation). So my playthrough of the first game was not entirely blind, since I remembered the broad strokes of the cases – but had forgotten most of the details – and that part of the liveblog is shorter. I had also accidentally come across a spoiler for TGAA2 at a certain point after playing the fan translation of TGAA1, which I referred to a few times during my liveblog speculations before actually reaching the part of the second game where the spoiler happened. So I definitely do not recommend following along with this liveblog case-by-case during your own first playthrough!
This announcement also comes with a general spoiler warning for this blog! If you’re an Ace Attorney fan who hasn’t played The Great Ace Attorney yet, first of all, get on that, it’s fantastic, every Ace Attorney fan should play it, and second of all, I strongly recommend you block the tag #tgaa spoilers until you’ve done so. I am pretty much guaranteed to be posting more content for this game on here, and a lot of it is likely to be about things that are very spoilery. Please heed this warning; I was spoiled for this game myself, and I really don’t want to be the reason anybody else is.

Okay now that everyone has calmed down over ingo’s hairline dhgjkfnh (Also this post got a little longer than expected so I’m just gonna put a read more if you want to see me complain about how dumb it is that Ingo’s been in Hisui for a decade dshjkfh)
I refuse to believe he is pushing 50 dshgkjndfh Like this isn’t even a “ooooooooo my fave is ooooooooold big sad” thing like no. If we’re using the same source I just refuse to believe that he’s been in Hisui for a decade lmao dsghjkfh. Like I literally had a whole conversation with a friend a week ago about how Ingo was not in Hisui for a decade BUT wouldn’t it be a morbidly funny setup for this joke I’m about to make dshgjkfh.
Like Ingo and Emmet being in their 30′s? in Black and white??? Because pushing 50 implies late 40′s and if we’re going off of he’s been in Hisui for a decade then he would be in his 30′s in Black and White. (But like the timeline is iffy so I could be very wrong on that anyways i won’t stop you from believing that they’re in their 20′s or something if it means that much to you but sdhgjkfndh idk i just don’t see it that way personally). That’s fine like I do not care about that at all. And the fact that a character being older than initially thought has like. become a problem for some people is just...there’s a lot to unpack there.
Anyways I haven’t gotten through much of Ingo’s stuff yet in PLA yet so please forgive me if I’m wrong but like. The conversation you have with Ingo in the tunnels when he’s talking about faint memories he’s recalling?? It’s like. Heavily implied this is his first time remembering Emmet and I REFUSE to believe that took a decade dhgkjfhndfdjknfdh. I also want to mention because *had an ace attorney hyperfixation so cares about small details like this* according to Japanese and New York State law (Unova is based on New York State so), in that amount of time Ingo would be considered dead which is. MMMMMMMMMMM. Anyways this post isn’t me trying to disprove it it is me dying inside because Ingo being gone for a decade is bad and hurts and i don’t like it :-).
I’m also just gonna leave this post on this note: I believe the book that the image is from just released in Japan today so we don’t actually know what the page looks like (Op is an artist and could have edited it and though I don’t think that’s the case i want to mention that it’s very much a possibility because pokemon hoaxes are wild), We can’t even see the full page so we’re probably missing some context, The page is in Japanese and just because one person says that it translates to something it does not mean that that’s actually what it says, and finally: as someone who wants to go into concept art and owns a couple art books: I do just want to say concepts that are in the art books don’t always mean that they’re canon in the final product. We don’t know if there’s a note on the next page or the top of this page that says anything about some details on the page not being included in the final product because that’s common in art books, and we don’t know what stage of production this art is from?? It could be a character reference sheet, it could be concept art, it could be both! 5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not? Yeah I try to reply to all. I think there's like two with just an emoji I haven't replied to. But it usually takes me a little time, esp right after publishing something, to reply, I save them up a little. But like now, when it's been a while since publishing and I think a week or more since a new comment, I get excited and rush over immediately haha.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? well all that are ended have happy endings. The angstiest rn is probably the Alberto angst one, hold my breath for me, but if it actually goes somewhere story-wise and not just short standalone chapters, I'm hoping to veer it somewhere happy. Boy deserves to heal. I kind of doubt I'd ever write something w an angsty ending. For me what's the point of escapism if it's not happy and carefree (I say, following Eli's planned tragedy with hawk eyes HAHA). I'll get out more angst when I finish the untitled Big Sad Gay Fic but that'll have a happy ending too.

I think my "genre" is "spicy vanilly" like I'll add elements of kink but keep it pretty soft and gentle still. Sorry to go on a tangent here but truly believe that's to do w my identity being somewhere on the ace spectrum, if kink goes too far I just don't understand it. I feel like I write all my pwps from a very emotional perspective rather than a physical perspective, and for me it's hard to grasp kinks where I don't understand the emotions of it. I guess! I do enjoy occasionally reading stuff that's kinkier and more physical, just yeah. I don't understand it enough to write it.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? no, though I'm working on some stuff with @albertolovesluca! not co-authoring but we're bouncing ideas for each others' fics and it's lovely and he's helped me a LOT! I've not really interacted enough w people before to have anyone to talk ideas with so it's been a very fun and rewarding experience<3

Well I'm a hyperfixator at heart so that changes whenever I change fandoms but the actual OTP that remains after years are probably Klavier/Apollo from Ace Attorney, I periodically fall back into them even now, something like 12 years (fuck! I feel old) after getting into them. All the rest have mostly faded away, though the biggest ones have been Davekat (Homestuck) and Wolfstar (Harry Potter) but I feel like nothing can compare to Luberto since I haven't actively participated in fandom or writing before them.

14. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? Hmm I think my favorite published one is you've been hiding all your life bc that one's so intensely personal to me. Like reading it back I'm a little more "eh, it's alright I guess", but it was such a profound and transformative experience to write. I feel like it untangled some knots inside me. As a whole I think make me crescendo is my best pwp at least. I think it's hard to compare the pwps with always be this close but that one was really, REALLY fun to write. 3
Though I feel pretty certain the Big Sad Gay Fic will be my fav when it's done, simply bc I have never done anything properly multichapter, it's very personal to me, and I believe in its concepts and am in love with some of the more pivotal scenes I've written... I think! We actually made some progress on completely rearranging a lot last weekend but aren't done so it's all a little up in the air rn!

I generally respond to comments. Almost always, unless I really can’t think of anything to say in reply, which is pretty rare. Comments make me so happy and I just want to let people who do comment know that I appreciate them.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I think the angstiest fic I wrote was a Free! fic called ‘Moves Across the Land’ - the premise of which is that Makoto died as a young adult of an illness and each chapter is a different person in his life receiving a letter that he wrote for them before he died. But that one had an optimistic ending, with Haru and Kisumi unexpectedly finding a newly strengthened friendship in sharing the grief of Makoto’s death.
So I guess technically the angstiest ending I wrote was a short Archie/Maxie oneshot where Maxie gets killed by Kyogre lol
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yes, but I ended up agreeing with it! Waaay back (probably more that 10 years ago at this point), I wrote a bunch of Layton/Rosetta oneshots that I now don’t stand by. One of them, in my naivety, I went too far with and breached uncomfortable territory. I got a couple of comments about how uncomfortable it was, so I ended up deleting that particular fic and felt better after it was gone.
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I am a fledgling at writing smut, which is probably obvious to anyone who’s read my smut haha. When I do write it, I prefer to focus on the dialogue between the characters - I like a banterous smut scene. Also, they’re usually pretty tame. I like writing about handjobs, blowjobs and wanking the most when I do write smut.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Again, not that I know of, but that would be awesome! A few years ago, a kind person messaged me about potentially translating my Layton fic ‘Grasping Liquid’ into French, but I don’t think they went through with it in the end. Though honestly, the dialogue and slang in that fic is pretty much illegible in English, so I reckon it’d be a tough fic to translate.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, the aforementioned ‘Barrel of Monkeys’ that I co-wrote with @amberrgalaxy It was a lot of fun and I love it :D
What’s your all time favorite ship?
Hmm... I don’t think I have a single all time favourite. I jump through a lot of OTPs and they always mean a lot to me, but it wouldn’t seem fair to pick out a single one that’s always shined brighter than the others, because that’s not really how my hyperfixations work. But my current favourite ships are Momus/Heracles (to be narcissistic) and TheseZag from Hades Game. While my oldest ship that I’m still invested in is Yami/Seto from Yu-Gi-Oh DM.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Shockingly, I don’t have any right now. A few years ago (I think 2018?), I made a point of going back and finishing ALL my old WIPs that I’d left hanging but intended to finish, even for fandoms I didn’t plan on going back to. So that freed my conscience of them and felt pretty good.
At the moment, my only WIP is ‘if found please return to the underworld’ - an AU where Zagreus does make it to Olympus, so Hades sends Theseus, Asterius and Meg to try to get him back. But I’ve only just started writing that one, so I do hope to stick with it until it’s finished.
What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue. Definitely dialogue. I’m told that I capture the canon voices of characters pretty well and that’s always what I’m trying the hardest to get right, so it means a lot to me.
I also feel like I’m good at keeping a fic flowing, without being bogged down by too much detail. But the downside of that is that I often sacrifice description, so I still hope to find the balance. Since Hades Game has more flowery prose than I’m used to, I think getting into that series actually helped me with this.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I do not think I am experienced enough to be able to pull this off well and would worry too much about making mistakes.
What was the first fandom you ever wrote for?
It was Pokemon, but those fics aren’t online anymore. The oldest fics you can still find buried somewhere with my name attached to them are Sonic fics.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve ever written?
‘the prince with specific tastes; the king with specific regrets’ - Sometimes I look back at that fic and wonder if I actually wrote it, since I avoided falling into all of my usual traps: I researched it properly and frequently, I kept the focus on the five main characters instead of getting distracted by introducing a million other character like I usually do, I plotted the fucker out from start to finish instead of winging it, and I worked the flashbacks into it in a way that balanced the present-day out instead of distracting from it. Also, I got the whole thing written in about two months, instead of staling for years. ...Whatever possessed me when I wrote that fic, please come back. (It was the first time I’d had two weeks off together in about three years, so I think that had a lot to do with it)
OH YEAH and that same kinda villain OC who I recycle in every fandom I’m in actually landed this time. It brought me so much joy to see how much people loved to hate Momus. Those two months when I was posting that fic are easily a highlight of my life. :D

This is gonna be so long and irrelevant i'm putting it under a read more because I will not be accused of making people read a multiple paragraph, self-reflective unpacking of my niche interests without their explicit consent. Don't say I never did anything for you.
So yeah in case you somehow haven't noticed I'm going through an ace attorney thing right now. I played the great ace attorney chronicles when it came out and really liked it, and it made me remember how much fun I had playing the original games on my crappy laptop emulator when i was in my first year of college (so like 2015 i think). I had just moved to a new city where i didn't know anybody, and was sort of in the process of completely divorcing myself from everything about my hometown so I had a lot of very solitary time on my hands, so on my breaks between classes I would sit in an empty studio and play these games that ended up being incredibly comforting to me. The story lines were fun and compelling, I liked that it always gave you enough info to try and think through the mystery, but not so much that it couldn't surprise you with a twist. I also love media that just hands you a bunch of fun characters with unique looks and personalities and shows you how they think and talk and move and how they interact with each other. It was like ace attorney was made specifically to appeal to me. So when i finished great ace attorney I wanted to go back and play every single main series games again, partly because I have an incredibly bad memory and by this time all I really remembered about them was "I enjoyed this when i was 19".
And for some reason I fell back into it hard. I don't know if it was due to the current state of the world and just needing that escapism so badly, or the fact that I realized there was still an active fandom, or even that I'm simply more self aware than I was before and found slightly new interpretations of things, but regardless I was fixated. It was honestly weird for me to begin with. I'm not used to being obsessed with things to this degree. I have my hyperfixations but they seem to come in waves, I get my 1-2 months of enjoyment out of something and then it fizzles out and I move on to something else. I am now 5 months in to my reignited ace attorney obsession and it is not slowing down. I am seeking out content at breakneck speed. I am reading fanfiction unironically for the first time in 26 years (AA has a cool habit of offhandedly mentioning something happened and then never elaborating on it and there are a lot of very talented canon-compliant writers filling in those gaps). I like to joke that I will never get a tattoo because there isn't anything I like enough to warrant getting it permanently on my body... I have now 80% convinced myself to get an ace attorney tattoo. So this is serious.
I think one thing that's changed between 2015 and now is that I've undergone a ton of personal growth and accumulated years of therapy (not to mention gotten an entire degree in overthinking), so now instead of just pointing vaguely at a gay lawyer in a blue suit and going "I like that :)" I actually understand what it is about these characters that I find so compelling. When you think about it (and both I and others have spent too much of our free time thinking about it) ace attorney deals a lot with themes of found family, trauma, and dealing with loss. Every character has their own struggles and hangups and I end up recognizing myself in a lot of them.
Like, its the way Phoenix Wright is self sacrificing to a fault. He takes on seemingly impossible tasks that no one else is willing to do and neglects his own wellbeing for the sake of people he cares about. He held his mentor as her body went cold in his arms and immediately took in her little sister, his best friend has left his life with no warning not once but twice, he's been assaulted, framed, nearly poisoned by someone he thought loved him, and he shoved all of that down to take care of everyone around him. Then after he gets disbarred its like it all catches up to him. He doesn't have the outlet of his job, and he just has to sit with everything for 7 years and now its his daughter that is the only reason he's still managing to hold the pieces of his life together.
And it's Miles Edgeworth and Franziska von Karma who are so interesting and have all these parallels and places where they diverge. Edgeworth had a loving father he looked up to until he was 9, and then it was all taken so suddenly, he feels personally responsible for it and has nightmares and flashbacks and panic attacks. Then after Manfred von Karma takes him in he doesn't see compassion again for 15 years, he is molded into the image of a perfect son and again we have the theme of pushing your own feelings down and not dealing with your trauma, but instead of sacrificing your own wellbeing for others its to appear strong and build up an emotional wall so no one knows that inside he's so deeply fucked up. He's scared of fucking everyone else up so he just pushes away any attempt to help him because this guilt that eats him makes him think he doesn't deserve the love that he desperately wants.
And Franziska is similar but even harder to reach because she didn't have those 9 years of a normal family. Emotional neglect and impossibly high standards are literally all she knows. When von Karma adopts Edgeworth he is immediately pitted against her and she devotes her life to being better than him. She calls herself perfect because thats what she's expected to be but she's violent and angry at everything around her and its because she's acting out these feelings she has towards her father and herself. Even after developing some tenuous relationships with the other characters she doesn't come as far as Edgeworth does because she doesn't know how. She doesn't know love or friendship or vulnerability and it will probably take a lifetime to undo the damage thats been done to her. I feel a lot for Franziska obviously.
I've already gone on so long, and thats not even beginning to mention the tragedy that is the Fey family, abandonment by Misty, betrayal by Morgan, the death of Mia, how Pearl's story is essentially her escaping from a cult. Then there's Diego Armando who makes me so fucking sad when I picture the void he must have lived in when he left the hospital and realized that not only was his girlfriend dead but he couldn't even get back at anyone for it because it had been tied up a long time ago so he's just left with this sadness and directionless anger towards nobody, but mostly towards himself. I'm not even going to touch the things i feel about Apollo Justice and Klavier Gavin because AA4 is really good and I could probably just make a whole post this length about that.
I don't really know what I was saying with all this but to sum up, trauma makes you weird and sometimes you just have to accept that your family isn't what you need and go out and find a new one.

-Venom: Let There Be Carnage (Movie) - Much like the first one I would love to break this movie apart and reconstruct the individual elements to create the ultimate ideal Monster-lover movie, but as it is it was still pretty fun. They fixed a lot of complaints I had about the first one (cut out unnecessary backstory, made the villains more interesting, made the Venom/Eddie relationship the focus, stopped trying to force Anne as the love interest and just let her be happy with Dan), though I still felt like we needed some more positive interactions between Eddie and Venom to make the whole “We’re a team and the villains aren't” thing work for me. Still the fact that this movie exists is hilarious and fantastic, really hope Marvel doesn’t fuck up my boys by making them villains.
-Ennead (Webcomic) - I don’t usually have guilty pleasures as I’m pretty unapologetic about the things I enjoy but in this rare case, yeah I’m kinda guilty about this one. I stand by the it has a lot of good elements (breathtaking art and character designs, a unique setting in Ancient Egypt, complicated characters with interesting motivations, ect), I really would not recommend most people check it out, and if you do definitely read the trigger warnings before hand. I would be lying if I didn’t say it occupied a lot of my brain space this week though so here it is.
-Link Click (Anime) - This has been hyped up as one of the Anime of the Year contenders, so I wanted to try it it before making my personal final judgement. I really like the art direction so far, and time travel stories definitely have the potential to be pretty dope, so wile my first impression is “pretty good”, I have expectations for it to impress me further. Also I realize that this is partially because I’m attracted to this genre anyway but with this, the MXTX works, 19 days, and Their Story, most of what I’ve read from China seems to fall into the “unusually long gays” category.
-JJBA: Stone Ocean (Anime) - Anime night continues with the newest Jojo, we’ve just been introduced to a sentient collective of plankton inhabiting the body of a dead girl and I think she’ll be my favorite .I’ve been impressed by some of the creative way’s they are able to use Jolyne’s Stand, and am looking forward to seeing whatever weirdass shit Araki has in store for us.
-Blue Period (Anime) - Still very good, will probably have more to say when it concludes in a couple weeks.
-Sleepy Princess in The Demon Castle (Anime)- Finished! Up in the air about whether I’ll read the manga-I did really enjoy the wholesome demon castle setting and the cute, lovable character dynamics, but I’m not sure how many more stories they’ll be able to tell with the same “hostage princess looking for ways to sleep” gimmick. That being said, really love how all the castle residents are these skeletor minion looking demons but have a very chill coworker dynamic, exactly my taste.
-Yotsuba&! (Manga) - A new book finally came out so in celebration I’m going to be rereading the series. I’ll have more to say next time.
-The Vampire Dies In No Time (Anime) - Finished! My interest in the series waned a bit near the end as they started to get less creative with the jokes and enemy vampires, but overall I really enjoyed this, especially John-who is unbelievably cute and precious-and Draluc, who I liked a lot more than I thought I would thanks to his genuine excitement at everything and his malewife energy. Would recommend if your a fan of friendly monsters and stupid humor.
-The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (Video Game) - As you do with hyperfixations, I have found a good playthrough to watch and vicariously re live the entire story again. The playthrough I’m watching has all the people involved gushing over how charming all the characters are, and it’s nice to have my tastes validated haha.

Ouran Highschool Host Club (My comfort anime♡)
Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood of course and read the manga)
Seven Deadly Sins (I never finished the anime but I did finish the manga!)
Demon Slayer (Need to catch up with the anime and I hope to read the manga once I'm finished!)
My Hero Academia (Reading the manga and casually watching the anime when I crave more content.)
Soul Eater (The latest series I've started and am in the middle of watching but I'm already so invested it's already on the list.)
Video Games:
The Legend of Zelda (I've been a HUGE TLoZ fan since I was young, played every main series game as well as a couple of the hand-helds and love them all.)
Persona 5 (Words can't describe my love for this game. Currently reading the manga as well!)
Pokemon (As if it wasn't obvious~ Love the games and have played a good chunk of them. I didn't grow up with the anime like a lot of people but I have watched the B/W series and I fell in love with the Sun/Moon series. It's so wholesome and sweet.)
Genshin Impact (Love the characters and the world. I started playing last year around this time of year cause I had a week off for my birthday and it has had a grip on me ever since.)
Ace Attorney (It tricks you into liking lawyers)
Undertale (I used to be big into Undertale but I enjoy it much more casually now. Still an amazing game and I look forward to what Toby Fox is doing with Deltarune.)
Food Fantasy ( I was big into this game a couple years ago but ended up falling out of it. I want to get back into it but I'm a little scared just because at the rate they release new characters I'll have so much catching up to do...")
Smile For Me (I couldn't even tell you what this little game did to get a death grip on me like it did. It's honestly so different from the type of games I usually hyperfixate on but I just fell in love with the characters so hard.)
Mystic Messenger (This game makes me SO MAD for so many reasons, but I love the characters so I stick around....)
Yo-kai Watch (If we're talking an underrated series this is it. Everything about this series is goofy and childish but its good vibes are off the charts. Love the games, love the anime and love the manga, they are all so wholesome.)
Final Fantasy XV (But I have to pretend the later half of the game doesn't happen or I'll cry.)
There are also a bunch of series I'm a fan of that I don't really interact with online much/at all, those being: Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Bungo Stray Dogs, Toilet-Bound Hanako kun (Currently Reading), Fruits Bakset (Currently Reading), Blue Exorcist, Danganronpa, One Punch Man.
