We're stoked for this awesome review of Lyn Hejinian's The Following in Jacket 2. Thank you so much, BK Fischer! / ~ ~ " The seventy-seven numbered poems in the volume gather non sequiturs — observations, utterances, images, and examples that convey no logical relationship or narrative from one to the next — in sets of fourteen, a constraint that inevitably invokes what is perhaps the most closed and logical poetic form of all: the sonnet. To call these poems sonnets, Hejinian writes cannily in the book’s preface, “wouldn’t be inaccurate — or it would be entirely so” (9). “Sonnets are the summit of logicality,” she continues, and unlike “the sonnet proper,” these poems “are intended to be illogical (9). Prescribed Burn is a collection of poems that trace the complicated nature of love and pain. It is a close exploration of the relational landscapes between parents and children, friends and lovers, even the self and society. These poems delve into the joy of connection and the bravery necessary to change, to choose love and life in our darkest moments. This book chronicles the human struggle to decipher what to hold dear, what must be nurtured and what must be destroyed in order for new growth to blossom.
Sara Biel is a poet, visual artist, and social worker living in Oakland, California. She is coeditor of the Colossus Press anthology series. Sara’s poems have been published in sparkle and blink, Button Eye Review, and Beyond Words literary magazine. She won honorable mention in the Streetlight magazine 2021 poetry contest. Her work has been included in the poetry anthologies, “Our Spirits Carry Our Voices” and ‘Words Upon the Waters.” She is interested in creative process as a medium for change, healing, and community building.

In Sara Biel’s debut chapbook collection, Prescribed Burn, these poems document the emotional territory of what it means to be human with compassion and vulnerability. One theme of Biel’s lyrical work is the revealing and unraveling of secrets. In “Telling,” she writes “Some secrets don’t age but calcify / breathe quietly, fold hands / lay claim with flat little smiles.” Her language is both delicate and fierce, explorations of grief, motherhood, strength, and survival. The titular poem, “Prescribed Burn,” tells the reader, “Sometimes / a door needs to slam / before it can close. / Sometimes / they burn fields so / something new might grow.” Here are poems that embody the writer’s love for the world.

Sara Biel’s invitation to enter a poetic space of experience and possibility comes by way of acknowledgment in the first line of the first poem of her book, Prescribed Burn. Everyone needs a window, is the vista point provided to the reader, see what it means to live, to break, to have regret, and to ponder the politics of pain and the various realities of suffering, our own and that of others, and of course tender hope. It’s thrilling to see Biel’s book enter the world at a time of such heartbreak and great possibility.

In the autumn of 1991, a very young version of myself had a semester-long course on prosody with Donald Justice. I would not be exaggerating to say it changed my life. Don went on to become a mentor and eventually a friend. I have gone back to my notes and handout from this class so many times over the past 26 years that many of the pieces of paper are falling apart. My classmate, David Koehn, has compiled all of the handouts and examples from that class with Don and edited them into a book. I already ordered it. If you have any interest in prosody, in the ways in which stress/sound is captured and manipulated in a poem, you do not want to miss the chance to get this book!
